Snap judgment: Jennifer Lopez's 'Do It Well'

Aug 20, 2007, 01:32 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Jennifer Lopez, Music

At this point in her career, Jennifer Lopez might be better labeled as "Classic Tryer/Dabbler" than "International Superstar." She keeps throwing varying types of career pasta at the wall — starring in movies, producing series like South Beach and Dancelife, releasing CDs in Spanish and English, guest judging on Idol — hoping something will turn out perfectly cooked and stick. She may not be the most talented gal in the room, but at least J.Lo works hard for her stardom, washes her hair before making public appearances, and doesn't resort to flashing her hoo-hoo or endangering the lives of motorists to get publicity.

"Do It Well," the first single from her forthcoming CD, Brave, finds Lopez's voice as tinny and feeble as ever, singing lyrics that may have sounded believable back in the early '90s days of In Living Color, but now come off as a preposterous attempt to "keep it real." I find it hard to believe that at any point in the last decade, J.Lo has bashfully introduced herself and scribbled down her digits…for anyone. Maybe she couldn't think of something that rhymed with "Have your people call my people"?

On the plus side, though, the production itself — from the urgent strings to the wah-chicka-wah's to that rapid-fire chorus — is hard to resist. The melody's as easy as it is catchy (perfect as "Jenny From the Block" for inebriated karaoke), and the beat demands a sumptuous choreographical feast of a video. I kid you not, I just did the "Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, oh-no-no" at my desk while listening to "Do It Well." And also some mild krumping. Not only that, J.Lo winningly brings "do-si-do" back to the pop-culture lexicon, and subliminally brings to mind Kelly Clarkson's "Since You Been Gone" by using "here's the thing" as the opening words to the song's verse. Is global domination imminent? You make the call, PopWatchers, while I fight the urge to blow 99 cents on a download.

yes I remember the song doin it back in 1988 i have been trying to find that song . does anyone know where i can find that song .

Special D Sun, Jul 13, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

LL Cool J's song "Doin it" was not an artistic blend of Grace Jone's Jamaican Guy. There were two female rappers from Trenton NJ who came out with the song "Doing it" in 1988 and it was the same song...same beat and chorus, but the rap was way better. I wish I could remember their names. I recorded it off of the Radio Station at Princeton University.

Kate Wed, May 28, 2008 at 04:06 PM EST

Yes, they both sample 1973's "Keep on Truckin'", written by Leonard Caston, Anita Poree, and Frank Wilson and performed by Eddie Kendricks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_It_Well

Cherilynne Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 10:17 AM EST

It's the same old lame crap. Sampling old 70's tunes is so out-dated. It might have worked if we were in the early 1990's, but now in 2007 it's tired and not original. J-Lo doesn't have a great singing talent, but at least I give her credit for remaining a classy lady. She has class, unlike other no talents like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. She looks great for 39, and she should stick with acting, if she's ever offered any roles.

YESSENIA Wed, Sep 12, 2007 at 09:06 AM EST

mmm WACK SHE LOOKS TERRIBLE I MEAN LIKE ALL THE HITTING JUST TO GET TO ONE BOY MM EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT WAS THE POINT I WOULD THINK SHE WOULD DO BETTER!!SHE PREETY AND THE CLOTHES IS NICE BUT DO BETTER

I am not a J-Lo fan but i really do like this song. Maybe it may not have the best vocals but its good production and the catchy chorus makes it audibly pleasing, but isn't that true with most pop music.

Rik Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 04:25 PM EST

Hey guys remember jlo has sold more 50 million records so like it or not she is a musical giant. i love the track.

Phil Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 01:20 AM EST

Oh & since I'm here, I like Miss Anthony's new single, "DO IT WELL" better than the other track they were trying to push (literally), "HOLD IT, PUSH IT". I like it, but I don't love it...yet. I'm torn, because as far as titles go, I still love the Nelly Furtado remix of "DO IT" with Missy Elliott alot more than Miss Anthony's single. Missy is on fire right now, and she doens't even have an album dropping this year...maybe that rumored collabo with Timbaland might be coming out after all...hmm....

Phil Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 01:16 AM EST

Hey Slezak & Stephen...I haven't been around much the past few weeks, but wanted to let y'all know that the next Fergie single is going to be "CLUMSY" & the next Timbaland single is going to be the ballad with One Republic "Apologize". Two sure fire hits from 2 great cds. I didn't know where else to post this since I haven't read too many posts the past 2 weeks, but figured y'all would wanna know!!

errol Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

this song is great, but it isnt like an "in your face comeback!!"i am a jlo fan and the song is a descent club poppin song, but nothing really special there.

Snap Judgment: Jennifer Lopez's "Do It Well"

No.

MrsBug Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

The song is catchy. I don't expect much from pop music - entertain me, make it danceable, make it catchy. She does all those.

I have to agree with emily about her Idol appearance: she genuinely seemed happy to be there and to help, unlike Stefani who was doing time.

gabe Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 08:59 AM EST

She does work hard to prove she's got talent but isn't it better to be a master of one than have tried every single thing and failed out there? A generation from now, she'll be famous for only three things, wearing that green Versace gown, destroying Affleck's career and....oops, sorry make that only two.

Joe C Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

As a non-Jennifer Lopez fan, I think she needs to stick to acting now. Since her movies almost go straight to DVD at this point and no one plays her music, how about concentrating on acting, where she is halfway tolerable? And that's as close to a compliment as I'll ever give Marc Anthony's wife.

ladyli1 Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:46 AM EST

this song is like spice girls + pussycat dolls around 1998.

Our People (Make It Work)

Hey there guy
I think we could synergize
You wanna hear me out?

I really like your Q-rating
So baby don't be hating
You know it'd be better
If only we were dating

(Chorus)
The market research is there
(Your people!)
We'd be the perfect pair
(My people!)
If you've got time to spare
(Our people!)
We can make it work

Snarf Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 05:27 PM EST

Have your people
Call my people
I wanna be worshiped
Under a steeple.

Ok it's not Shakespere but it rhymes.

emily Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Still not a fan but i can tolerate her now that she is not in our face 24/7 like Paris and Lindsey. She actually seem liked she was happy to be a guest coach on American Idol unlike Gwen Stefani who hated it and was only on to promote her crappy cd that was not selling as well as the previous one. You got to give her credit that she made a carrer for herself and made money eventhough she is not much of a actress and can't sing too well.

Michael Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

Slezak....I'm so suprised you didn't mention, in your praise of the production and melody, that the beat is sampled from Mr. Cheek's "Lights Camera Action."

As for the song, I'm kinda diggin it, except the part where shes says "you ain't even tryin' to play me...boy", which just sounds strange. I'll have to give it a few more listens.

daisyj Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 04:17 PM EST

"Career spagetti"-- classic.

The song-- ehn, I'm not really getting into it. Not bad, but not exceptional, and kind of dated. Could possibly be a hit if there was a really kick-ass video, if people still watched videos.

Bobby Rowe Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

I came back for another listen. Still like it mostly, but can we please discuss the "run" that she does after the first chorus, when the clock says 3:28 (counting backwards). Hilarious/Painful.

Carlos Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

I think is one of the best singles she has put out so far. Once they make the remix for the clubs it'll be HUGE. I can't wait for her performance at Fashion Rocks this year, it's going to be great.

Liza Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

The world is not ready for another cr*ppy JLO album.

to sally Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

janet jackson is able to live off her millions and put out 'shitty' music because she worked her @ss off for years when she was younger...as far as I'm concerned Beyonce and even JLO are following Janet's path..this is a perfectly produced top-40 dance track though...

Sassy Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 02:53 PM EST

That was just awful

Ceballos Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

Gotta give J.Lo this...she usually surrounds (or hides) her "tinny and feeble voice" (which is actually the perfect description) with top-notch production.

I loved me some "Get Right", the lead single off of Rebirth.

Sally Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 01:56 PM EST

Heard it - like it! You go girl.

Sally Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

I like her, I'm a huge JLO fan and have seen almost every movie she's been in. Yeh, she works hard for the money - as opposed to someone like Janet Jackson who sits around for 2-3 years and lives off her millions of dollars and then comes out with massive PR to promote a sh****y album. Jlo and Beyonce are the hardest working women in the business.

ericalina Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

After hearing the beginning of this song, I was hoping this would turn out to be Mr. Cheeks' "Lights Camera Action" instead of another crappy J. Lo "jam," (though Mr. Cheeks undoubtedly stole the sample from someone to begin with).

Stephen toSlezak Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, YOU OR WHITNEY PLEASE POST ABOUT SEACREST HOSTING THE EMMY'S!!!!!!!!!!

Jenna Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

My 13th month old just went nuts when I started the song! I guess babies will love dancing to it!

GingerCat Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

I like J.Lo a lot more now that she's not in my face all the time like she was in the Bennifer days. But still, the time for world domination has passed. Her CDs and movies have been faring poorly of late, and I don't see that changing.

EM Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

wow. that was 2 minutes of my life I'll never get back. that was worse than JfromtheB.

Bobby Rowe Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

Completely agree Slezak, her voice is just kinda there, although I'd say it is speech-like than her previous tracks (a good thing.) But the production is great, from the strings to the beat, and your description of the melody is dead on--easy. Lets Get Loud just got a friend in the "Only-J.Lo-Songs-I-Can-Listen-To-Without-Launching -Into-A-Tirade-About-People-Getting-Record-Deals-Becuase -They-Are-Already-Famous" Club

Sara Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

Not that it's an incredibly inventive phrase, but does anyone else feel like this song is just a ripoff of LL Cool J's song "Doin It" ?
The chorus to that is "doin it, and doin it and doin it well" ...

Stephen Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

Catchy, but not memorable, like all her songs. I'll listen to it for a little bit, then forget it. And whenever a song reminds me of a superior one in the past, in this case B's 'Crazy in Love,' why settle for the inferior?

Michael Berg Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

Damn that J-Lo
Just when I'd given up on her at last she hits me with this ridiculous, oh so catchy single.
I wish I knew how to quit you...my 99 cents is already gone...

scott neumyer Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Surprisingly catchy and hypnotic. Hmmm...
