Trailer Blazer: 'Dan in Real Life,' 'Lars and the Real Girl,' 'Be Kind Rewind'

Dan_l If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, and you don’t have time to do all five things that Annie Barrett says you should do, then get yourself caught up on the week’s newest movie trailers instead.

First up is Dan in Real Life (Oct. 12), the new dramedy from Peter Hedges (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Pieces of April). Steve Carell (pictured) plays a single father-of-three-girls who falls for the girlfriend (Juliette Binoche) of his brother (Dane Cook), and the whole thing appears to take place in a family-stuffed, catalog-ready autumn New England dreamscape. (Hopefully, there’s at least one scene with everybody out on the front lawn playing touch football in cozy sweaters.) Only one thing's wrong with this trailer: the voiceover guy whose narration hits all the usual movie-trailer notes ("But the only thing you can truly plan on... is to be surprised!") sounds like a second-stringer. His voice lacks the faux-gravitas of those anonymous voiceovers we're used to in trailers like this, don’t you think? In fact, he kind of sounds like the announcer-man from that great Shining mock trailer from a while back — agreed? (BTW, Dane Cook hooking up with Juliette Binoche?!?!? WTF?!?!?)

After the jump: Lars and the Real Girl and Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind.

Lars and the Real Girl (also due Oct. 12), looks to be a comedy with heart that gives Ryan Gosling a My-Name-is-Earl mustache and casts him as a singleton who falls in love with an inflatable doll. Looks kind of sweet, and not too goofy — encouraging signs, since it’s all too easy to imagine how a love story between a man and a blow-up woman could go very wrong. Still, you figure there’s gotta be something here if a young actor of Gosling’s caliber has signed up for it. What if this thing outromances The Notebook

Finally, The Science of Sleep was way underrated. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a masterwork. Michel Gondry’s a brilliant director and a real innovator. His new movie is called Be Kind Rewind (Dec. 21) and stars Jack Black and Mos Def as video store clerks who, after their entire inventory gets demagnetized, recreate their favorite movies by shooting their own reenactments. Even before this most excellent trailer came along, this sounded like a must-see.

that Lars movie looks ridiculously funny, but i don't think i could stop flinching every time he addresses her like she's real. maybe i'll just rent it and pause when necessary.

I saw the be kind, rewind trailer last night and--again--i can't believe how bizarre it is. i love that people still wanted to rent the movies. that's just hilarious. it's like social commentary on how we would rather watch youtube clips than professionally written, directed, acted, and produced sitcoms.

Be Kind Rewind - original
Lars and the Real Girl - original
Dan in Real Life - recycled feel good movie of the blah blah blah

Thanks for drawing our attention to these trailers. I wish these were the ones showing up before the summer's hottest movies instead of the tripe I've seen so far. I love Steve Carell.

Dan in Real Life looks hilarious. Steve Carell is the man.

Rose Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 09:21 AM EST

Micheal Gondry is a genius. His style is unmatched and the pairing of Jack Black and Mos Def is brilliant.

Ok, sign me up for Be Kind Rewind. I am totally sold. And Lars and the Real Girl looks worth seeing, too. It seems like they took more of a high road with the subject of the story as opposed to going really silly which is good. Dan in Real Life looks like a rental. I think the big "WTF?!?!" part of it for me is more Steve Carrell and Dane Cook being cast as brothers. Carrell has a lot of talent and I don't think he needs Cook to be a black hole and sucking all the funny out of his movie.

"dan" smells faintly of "the family stone", no?

Emily Mortimer. Mention her next time. She's a goddess

Yeah, I totally agree with the other posters. Be Kind Rewind looks great! I'm really looking forward to this, too bad it's not until December...

Can't wait for Be Kind, Rewind, looks like another winner from Michel Gondry.

I really want to see Dan in Real Life and Lars and the Real Girl looks okay. But I NEED TO see Be Kind Rewind. The trailer alone was hysterical [especially the Driving Miss Daisy part]. NEED TO SEE THAT :]

Oops, but apparently does NOT contain a comma.

My Jack Black love knows no bounds. And Mos Def? Be Kind, Rewind is made of awesome!

That video with Annie in it is PRICELESS!

Jack Fear Fri, Aug 10, 2007 at 09:39 PM EST

BE KIND REWIND has the exact same premise as a recurring bit on Amanda Bynes's old Nickelodeon sketch show.

Lauren Fri, Aug 10, 2007 at 08:47 PM EST

I agree about the odd narrator in the Steve Carell movie.

But my real question is what crackhead came up with the idea of pairing Dane Cook with Juliette Binoche? That's one crazy ass couple!

Victor Fri, Aug 10, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

BE KIND REWIND, baby!!!! It's gonna be awesome!!!
