Okay, who watched 'High School Musical 2'?

Aug 21, 2007, 01:55 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Music, Television, Those Crazy Kids!

Grabeel_l Did anyone over the age of 14 watch High School Musical 2, besides me?

Until last weekend, I was blissfully ignorant of all things Wildcats. (That's the East High mascot. These kids are seriously into school spirit.) But then I stumbled onto the first film Saturday afternoon, and decided I should probably see what all the fuss is about. While I didn't develop an inappropriate crush on Zac Efron— yay me!— I did appreciate the message that kids shouldn't be afraid to break out of their cliques. (In the original, Efron's basketball star Troy wants to sing in a school musical with Gabriella, a new-to-town smarty-pants played by Vanessa Hudgens.)

Since I was too tired to move off the couch, I watched the sequel. It's now summer, and the Wildcats all get jobs at a country club where rich and fabulous classmate Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) is a member. She wants to sing with Troy in the club's talent show and uses her daddy's connections to the local university (where Troy would love to go on a basketball scholarship) to make him feel indebted to her. The moral here is you don't sell out to get ahead. And that Dirty Dancing choreographer Kenny Ortega (who directed both School films) and Co. should have focused as much on Efron's golf-course showstopper, "Bet on It" as they did the baseball-diamond delight "I Don't Dance," which finally let Lucas Grabeel, pictured, show the moves he's got.

Now back to the original question: Did you watch High School Musical 2? Also: How did it stack up to the original? And do you think the soundtrack could wind up as the biggest seller of 2007?

Hi I Love you Troy and I love
how you sing

Georgia Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:31 AM EST

Referring 2 the original question, yes, I did see High School Musical 1 and 2 and loved them both! I preferred 2 to 1, however, because:
1. Zac looks cuter as far as airbrushed actors go!
2. They all looked much older and more mature
3. And Corbin's afro has grown out, making him look much hotter!

I think the soundtrack's starting to dwindle, since Hairspray is the BIG thing now. But HSM 2 is huge and all I know is that I can't stop singing those songs! Kenny's just waiting til the holidays to release HSM 3, then it'll be the big thing. Funny how things change, huh?! I don't think HSM will forgotten for a while. But I think that 3 is going to be the last movie thay make. Why? Because the actors are all adults, now. I can see it now, High School Musical 57: Grandparents! Can you imagine Zac at 85? I didn't think so. So, sadly, it's coming to an end. This generations kids are now watching all sorts of rubbish, but we can now say that we experienced a once in a lifetime movie! Yay!

Georgia Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 01:11 AM EST

I've been published in Grass Roots magazine ( Australia) 3 times, even though I'm only 13, so I'm fit to review HSM 2!
It's a great movie, however, I don't like it now that EVERY girl has a picture of Zac Efron in their room! It's silly! You should all have pics of Corbin Bleu in your rooms *sigh*! Sorry, anyway, a fab movie, that's brainless entertainment 4 the whole family! If you like Zac, watch Hairspray and if you like Corbin, watch Jump In! Jump In! is awesome, although it's an average plot, Corbin stars in it! So, I just sit there and sigh over Corbin! Anyway, that's my review on HSM 2! For my complete review, check out my 2 underneath this! They're awesome!!!!

Georgia Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

I'm 13 and a HUGE High School Musical Fan!!!! HSM is a wonderful movie 4 the whole family! It's clean, fun and cute! 1 and 2 were good, but I think 2 is better! However, no movie is perfect.
Cons: HSM 2 doesn't really go anywhere. It's a pretty boring plot.
You can really see the fashion difference in 2 a.k.a the clothes are more revealing! However, not as revealing as most other movies.
Sharpay's character is bossy, cruel and rude. It sends the wrong message to kids.
Do you really want your 6 year old crushing on Zac Efron?
Although the theme is, we're all in this together, it excludes the characters! Such as, Zac and Corbin are arguing throughout the entire movie! Disney, in my opinion, is pushing it!
Pros: Fabulus songs!
The dancing's off the hook!
Corbin is CUTE!
Lucas CAN dance!
Clean and safe
Not a bit of swearing!
Great 4 all ages!
Well-known cast!
Catchy, boppy songs!

End result: It's a great movie! 8/10! Well done to the cast!
Final: I LOVE Corbin Bleu!!!!!!!

Georgia Wed, Apr 30, 2008 at 12:40 AM EST

HSM? I LOVED IT! IT WAS REALLY GOOD! HOWEVER, IT COULD'VE BEEN BETTA! LIKE, ZAC COULD LEARN HOW 2 DANCE, CUZ, HE DON'T DANCE! I'M NOT A ZAC FAN, LIKE MOST OF U! I MUCH PREFER CORBIN, WHO CAN ACTUALLY DANCE AND SING AND LOOKS GOOD! LUCAS SHOULD'VE BEEN THE MAIN CHARACTER, CUZ FOR A WHITE GUY, BOY, CAN HE DANCE! GOOD MOVIE, BUT COULD BE BETTER!

Yes I watched It and am 15(16 next week)and in the same circumstances. I loved "I don't dance" but grimiced at Zac's 'dancing' in "Bet On It"...plus could the reflection have looked more fake?
I prefer the second movie as the other characters got bigger parts but thinks that the first movie's message is just as important. I didn't like Zac either but have to admit that I do like Corbin...oh am I embarassed!?

VERY DISAPPOINTED Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

THE SONG "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a" IS A VERY RACIST SONG.SOME PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW THIS PUT POLYNESIANS DONT SPEAK LIKE THAT.DISNEY SHOULD REMOVE THAT SONG IMMEDIATELY SO PEOPLE,ESPECIALLY KIDS, WONT THINK ITS RIGHT TO MAKE FUN OF SOMEONE ELSES LANGUAGE.THAT WAS VERY IGNORANT OF DISNEY TO EVEN PUT A SONG LIKE THAT IN A MOVIE.WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TOO.RESPECT,PEACE,UNITY IS WHAT THE WORLD IS LACKING RIGHT NOW SO DISNEY PLEASE REMOVE THE "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a" SONG.

random spontaneity Fri, Nov 23, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

Yes, I did watch HSM 2 (and I'm over 14), and I detested it. In a nutshell, the film butchers the French language, promotes bossiness and cruelty to young girls (namely, a 5-year-old relative of mine), and is an utter disaster. I could go into huge detail, here, but I'd rather not...I'd waste all my space talking about one of those topics. Another issue: Who gives their girlfriend a necklace with their own initial on it (cough Troy)? Is that supposed to be like a brand or something?

The first one was relatively decent with a good message, but this is just terrible...to think the first was on its way to becoming an un-sequeled classic. Disney Channel is on an unfortunate downward spiral, and this only lowered them even further in my eyes. Save yourself; watch something else.

I think the movie was great and since it had so many songs, i think the soundtrack will do great

Deanna Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 09:25 PM EST

I'm 44. My 10 year old daughter loves Zac Efron, and I am more than happy to feed that flame. He's a cutie, well-spoken, and seems very grounded. And, I do find myself searching the Internet for articles to share with her. And, yes, we just bought Rolling Stone and People, because Zac was on the cover. And, we bought the HSM2 CD the day it came out. We have watched HSM2 the four times it has come on Disney, just to make sure she didn't miss any of the "behind the scenes" and the DVR is set to record the 9/8 Dance Along version of HSM2.

maria perez Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 10:23 AM EST

i loved the fabulus and you are the music in me and i dont dance.

elaine Fri, Aug 24, 2007 at 01:33 AM EST

I definitely have an inappropriate crush on Zac. He's adorable. I've seen Hairspray 3 times, but of course, it wasn't just for him. That movie was phenomenal.

I'm 34 and use my nieces and nephews to get all of the latest scoop on what's hot.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that Bet On It looked like Footloose. I was waiting for a big long roundoff or something, though. The song was fine, but the choreography was pretty bad, especially compared to the other numbers. The only part of that song I liked was when he looked in the lake and saw his face and when he jumped into the sand pit from a tall rock. The camera shot was great.

I heart Corbin and Ashley as well. Those kids are fantastic. Yes, as an adult you have to turn your brain off for a little while, but it's worth it for a little sunshine.

Galadriel Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 10:30 PM EST

Jessica: give me your address and I'll make you a tape of the movie. It's still on my DVR! :)
Zachary: AWESOME photo! Can I come to your HSM3 party?

Sarah Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 10:26 PM EST

I must say that anyone with a child over the age of 5 probably ended up watching the movie, whether they wanted to or not (and it's worth noting the plethora of HSM3 slumber parties that were going on throughout the world that night!). I thought it was really cool and entertaining, although my 9-year-old son was totally grossed out by all the kissing! I DVR'd HSM1 so I could catch up on this whole phenomenon. I must say, I'm 38 years old, but man if I were 14 again, Zac's poster would surely be on my bedroom wall (if only they'd do something decent with his hair!)

Vivi Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 09:54 PM EST

Vivi Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 09:54 PM EST

Just finished watching the movie. Preferred the 1st movie better. It held my attention more and the songs were WAAAY better. "What I've Been Looking For" and "Getcha Head in the Game" totally pwns any song from HSM2. And I would also like to point out that Zac might be getting all the press now (I mean, cover on Rolling Stone?! WTF?) but it's Corbin Bleu who's the star. He is the multi-taleneted one. He has a HUGE future ahead of him.

Mike Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 09:37 PM EST

I just read at www.newsspace.org that Disney will release this in time for Christmas. High School Musical 2 will be on DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 11. Woo-hoo!!!!!

nao Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

I'm almost 30 watched both the original HSM and 2 this past weekend, mostly to see what the hype was all about. I liked both of them but liked the first one better. I'm pretty impressed with the kids' dancing abilities, especially since many of them had no training. Some of the songs were cheesy, but overall I thought it was clean, good fun.

Nicole Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

It was amazing! And I totally have an inappropriate crush on Zac.... (I'm 26 and married, but who wouldn't love Zac?!)

greg p Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 02:15 PM EST

Sean, spot on with your comments on ryan, and possibly lucas too( I think zanessa is a PR ploy on zac's part . come on, a straight musical theatre savant? ) we should talk,im me on aim at pbooks84

greg P Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 02:05 PM EST

Ok,i watched it ,and i am a 23 year old male. Decent followuop about finding your moral compass and all,but the orginal was better. And yes,i have an inappropiate crush on zac. For my full review, see my blog at tv guide.com -greg's random media ramblings. I'll have to rewatch ber on it,but i didn't think it was that bad. Why doesn't zac have record companies banging on his door? Also,is the hsm2 pep rally aany beytter than the first one? If anyone from disney read this, please decvelop this into a series, like cop rock for tweens, and not the usual crap you make,(i stopped watching disney when even stevens and lizzie mc guire were canceled-wizards of waverly place looks decent, though).

Faye Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

My 20 year old daughter said it best when my 46 year old sister was going on and on about how cheesy and boring the movie was .. she said "YOU ARE NOT THEIR TARGET; I DON'T THINK IT WAS SUPPOSED TO APPEAL TO MIDDLE AGED WOMEN" Could not have said it better myself even though I have seen both movies in the double digits because I love them. I also have an inappropriate crush but mine is on Corbin Bleu!

Paula Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

I just posted and forgot to mention I am 35 and even my 3yr old knows the songs and loves the music. My son who is 6 loves the music and sports.

Paula Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:28 PM EST

I loved the film. I do watch a lot of disney due to my kids, but I will watch some of the shows like Hannah and the HSM movies when the kids are in bed. Love Zac, maybe not as much as my daughter-which for a 9 yr old is totally there (esp the Rolling Stone issue she begged me to buy). Though one thing I will disagree with-I loved "Bet on It" from the first time I heard the soundtrack and loved it more in the movie-yeah on Footloose-but I loved that movie also. I do like the other songs-and my daughter's fav is the break-up, esp after seeing the movie she about lost it looking into those blue eyes with emotion-she told me she almost cried, but I didnt tell her I was breaking with that part. Love HSM movies and hopefully things will work for all of them to return-have been seeing some rumors today online.

jamie Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

I am 35 and I watched it.
Of course, I have an excuse-I have an 11 year ole daughter but I loved the first one so I had to see the second.
I totally have a crush on Zac-if any of you see Hairspray-you will crush more :)

Susan Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 11:52 AM EST

I see everyone's confessions here so, I too, must confess...I suffer from a terribly inappropriate crush on Zac. I am 38 with a 19 year old daughter who's only 2 mos. younger than Zac (weird how I know his bday)! I dragged her and my 7 year old daughter to the HSM2 premiere at Disneyland just to see Zac in person (they both love him too so that was my excuse for going). But I would have gone alone if they didn't like him (just don't tell my hubby that). Zac is such a cutie, and he's even cuter in person. Those eyes! We all loved Hairspray and both HSM movies, have all the DVD's, CD's, and I have Zac as my computer's wallpaper and screensaver. Oh, and I framed his pics from the Rolling Stone mag. Yes, I am obsessed. But it's so much fun!!! Oh, hey, did I mention my life-size stand up Link Larkin picture?

Aly Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 11:00 AM EST

22. Big fan of the original HSM. Semi fan of HSM2 and I agree that Efron is supreme eye candy. HSM1 had more "musical-esque" songs. But the talent really lies in Corbin and Lucas. They did great w/ the acting. Hudgens is too adorable for words and I'm actually rooting for "Zanessa" as the tweeners call it.

Zac's Bet on It was DISASTER. He must of felt awkward doing that number. I like Gabriella's break up song and the baseball number.

All in all, I think it's a positive story for young kids so the DVD's and all things HSM I own will be saved for my own kids.

Silv Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 10:39 AM EST

Yup, I watched it. Age? let's just say my kids are beyond the target age range too.

Angela H. Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

Thank you for pointing out "Bet On It." Personally, I thought it looked like Efron's audition for "Footloose." Maybe some gymnastics would have helped it...

LORIANN Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 08:58 AM EST

HEY IM 36 YEAR OLD AND I LOVE IT..I WATCH DISNEY CHANNEL ALL THE TIME...BUT MY MOST FAVORITE SHOW IS PHIL OF THE FUTURE...NOW I MISS IT CUZ THEY NOT MAKING ANYMORE WISH THEY KEEP MAKING THAT SHOW...BUT I LIKE TO WATCH HSM 1 & 2 AND IT REALLY GOOD SHOW....HOPE THEY MAKING NUMBER 3 FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL... THANKS

Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:37 AM EST

16 year old guy - i liked it.. the original was better though

monica Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 11:52 PM EST

Last year I'd just gotten back from a semester in Madrid and I kept seeing posters and commercials for some "really great" Disney musical. So I'd been pushed to the limit when they were all over the screens in Virgin Mega Records as I was stocking up on new music. I bought it, rushed home, watched it and was pleasently surprised to discover that it didn't suck. BUT I was expecting the sequel to suck. However, it was 10 times better. The choreography, the music, and even the acting was much better than in the first movie. I even liked 5 songs on the new soundtrack as opposed to the 2 that I've already forgotten from the last one. Let's just say, I'd watch High School Musical 3.

Mar Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 11:41 PM EST

I did not like the opening number on HSM2. The songs sound quality was cheapened by the dubbing. Say I am old fashioned but I was drawn in by the anticipation of the "prince and princess" getting together in the end - the typical Disney theme. The HSM's are tween versions of Grease and Footloose and therefore are much cheesier, as many other people have said. The resort was very unrealistic, having the appearance of a set. I like to watch good looking, beautiful actors and actresses no matter how young or old in fun choreography. It helps if they have some talent, these kids are growing into their talent. Lastly, I love a good pair of baby blues - remind me of my late husband and my favorite dog, an Australian Shepherd.

maryangel Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 11:40 PM EST

I am almost 22 years old and I saw the movie. I didn't see HSM until the spring of this year. The movie's cute but not amazing. I figured I'd watch HSM2 after kids I've been tutoring this summer were asking if I'd watch it. (The movie is such a great conversation piece with students in elementary school!). Like others, I thought the first one was way better. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who thought Ryan was gay but I'm happy that he got to shine in the film. However, there were things I noticed that kind of peeved me: (1)The excessive product placement in the song "Fabulous." Sharpay is probably a product of "Super Sweet 16." (2)I know that the story is taking place in the summer, but I feel that Disney chose to sex up the sequel with girls wearing less. Maybe they're trying to attract more male viewers.(3)"Bet on It" was such a terrible song! (4)Although I like Kelsi, the songs she "writes" are really bad even though I've been singing "You are the music in me."

Bubbles Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 11:09 PM EST

Tsk, tsk, if you watch it, get it right. Sharpay's parents owned the place, which was a resort and spa, not a country club. So her dad was Troy's boss for the summer as well as an influential contact. And Zac's solo number wasn't as dynamic because Effron's not a trained dancer like Lucas. The sequel was not as good as the first and was too Troy-centered, and the songs weren't as catchy overall, but it was fine for a follow-up, and had a good message as well. A well-worn one, but good.

Amanda Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 09:52 PM EST

I'm 22 and I watched it (I am not ashamed of my Zac Efron love). HSM2 was way better than the first one. While HSM was just plain derivative and bad, HSM2 was AWESOMELY bad, all because of the trashterpiece that is "Bet On It" (which I have watched a thousand times since).

escargot Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 09:25 PM EST

Our town had huge thunderstorm around 6 PM, everyone lost power until late in the evening. You could almost hear the anguished screams over the wind! Hundreds of pre- and teenaged girls (temporarily) denied their HSM2; viewing parties ruined; not even computer IM to share the agony!

JuJuBee Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 08:10 PM EST

YEAH.. HSM2.. Couldn't wait.. I am a 31 year old mother of 2 girls, 10 and 6. I know it's so wrong, creepy and weird but-I am in love with Corbin Bleu.. his hair is great! I loved HSM and watched HSM2 with my girls, taped it on TiVO, and burned both onto DVDs. We have posters, Buy teen beat magazine, and T-shirts and anything else for them with Zac or Corbin. My girls love Zac Efron..I find myself singing HSM1's "Start of something new" all the time and playing the CD in the car (sometimes)... Disney is fantastic. great programming and don't have to worry about inappropriate shows.. Wildcats, Wave your hands up in the air!!! GO East High!!

jim Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 07:57 PM EST

Thank you, Sean. I wasn't going to mention Ryan's gayness and upset the Disney fans. Will it be good wholesome entertainment when Ryan comes out in HSM3?

Candace Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 07:24 PM EST

I'm 20 and I watched it and loved it. I think that the soundtrack will be number one, not because it was as good as the first, but because other Disney Channel albums like Hannah Montana have been dominating the charts.

Jessica Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

Let me just start by saying that I am 23 and, yes, I suffer from ICS(inappropriate crush syndrome). That Zac Efron is one adorable man-child. I am one of about 4 people on this planet who did not see HSM2, but that's only because my craptastic cable company doesn't offer Disney. Therefore I must wait until the DVD is released and then drag my 13-year-old sister(my beard) to Blockbuster so I can rent it. I did ruefully enjoy HSM and am actually excited to see 2. I've already started combing YouTube for some clips

Zachary Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

Not only did me and six of my friends watch HSM2, we threw a party for it and had cut out masks of Zac Efron's face! We loved "Bet On It" It was sooo bad it was AMAZING! Here's a creepy pic of us all at the party with our Efron masks!

Lynn Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 07:17 PM EST

I'm 38 and watched it with my 12 year old and her friends I loved it! Where was this stuff when I was kid? We just had those terrible after school specials. I should also admit that I was listening to the soundtrack today in the car...without the kids.

BJohnson Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

Oh my internet was down 2 days and I'm so glad there is a posting about HSM2.
I'm 32 years old and proud to say I watched & enjoyed HSM1&2. I have a 10 year old niece who lives for Disney and Nick Jr. & I can't help but feel like an old fogey saying "Well when I young, Disney was only on one station and it only showed old Annette Mickey Mouse Club." The programming is great and how can I not like something that keeps my niece from asking "Why do they have to say bad words in music & TV" I even sometimes listen to Radio Disney just to clear my mind of it for awhile when my iPod isn't near. HSM3 would really be stretching a good thing, but hey, how many Jason & Freddie's and Halloweens did they make? It's not like they're the first to try to market a product to death.

Sean Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:55 PM EST

I'm 21, and I think High School Musical 1 and 2 are awesomely bad movies. So basically I loved them. Although I sat through both of them only for Zac Efron and Lucas Grabeel. Since Zac was 19 during the second one, I don't consider it inapproriate, and since Grabeel is older than me, well, yeah, definitely not.
I kind of enjoy the fact that Ryan is a blatantly gay character while being depressed by the fact that he is made Sharpay's sister to diffuse sexual tension because it would be considered "inappropriate" to depict an openly gay character on Disney Channel. If there was any doubt about Ryan's sexuality, the sequel's decision to not create a Ryan, Troy, Gabriella love triangle sealed it.
Anyway, my feelings on HSM are summed about by what I said to my friends after watching the first on DVD for the third time while singing along with it: "I am 20 (which I was at the time) this behavior is totally unacceptable"

Carly Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:39 PM EST

Just to add on to my last comment. I am female and a mother of 2 (a boy 5 years) and a girl (3 years) They could care less about HSM, still a bit young. But I am a HUGE fan :) Innapropiate crushers on Zac Efron unite. lol

b-dizzle Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

Ok so i guess im here to confess as well...this is more of what people seem to be doing here...im 24..male..i admit watching the first hsm tons of times and watched the second twice...and actually really realy liking them...loved the first 1..the second left me hanging a little bit but still liked it....its funny how people are older and are admiting about liking this movie kind of like the message of the first movie...don't be afraid to show people that you like something that others might think its lame...funny if you think about it...its just simply a guilty pleasure...but very innocent...

Carly Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:31 PM EST

Heck Yes!! I am 28 year old HSM fan. I am not ashamed either. I love HSM I own the dvds and the soundtacks. I LOVE it. LOL so maybe I should be ashamed but I love Troy (Zac Efron) and the rest of the cast. I was counting down the days untill the premire of HSM2 you bet I watched it. 3 times this weekend alone. :)

Don't Bet on It Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:30 PM EST

Mid-30s, watched with my wife to see what the fuss was about...harmless fun with lots of energy for the kids but no dramatic or musical moments that were memorable...the songs were surprisingly lousy, Disney has done better with its animated films

Jim Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:12 PM EST

Yes I did *hides head in shame*, but I have an excuse! I'm an elementary school teacher and it's VITAL that I keep informed of things that interest my kids! Now, I'm going to go an play with my Yu-Gi-Oh cards and .... ah, forget it. :)

Kelsey Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:10 PM EST

Am I the only one who finds Zac Efron so pretty he looks like he was made of plastic?

Megan Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 06:03 PM EST

I'm a 15 year old, musical theatre geek, surrounded by the many "I LOVE ZAC EFRON" girls (I'm not one of them) and I found HSM 2 HORRIBLE! DREADFUL! The first one actually HAD songs that would recall it a "musical" (Stick to the Status Quo, Breaking Free). This one sounded like they made a whole bunch of songs and said "OMG LIKE WE'RE TOTALLY GOING TO SING THESE...RIGHT NOW!" Go Lucas and Corbin, those two have talent!! but I think enough is enough with these movies. seriously.

seatex Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:58 PM EST

As a lover of musicals I did feel an obligation to watch HSM 2 even though I strongly disliked the first one. I'm really baffled by why this is a "phenomenon". The whole movie felt like it was thrown together in a matter of days. The songs are not in the least bit catchy or tuneful, even by pop music standards. Yeah, Zac is cute but once he got to his solo on the golf course and he started that awful choreography facing the camera, I was done.

Liz Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

i'm 19, my mom is 50, and we both watched! And I prefer Lucas Grabeel over Zac Efron!

Cacciatore Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

You don't understand how badly obsessed I am with High School Musical. It boreders on weird. I'm a school teacher. I teach High School! The musical is like a mirror image of my school. I got up at 6am when the CD first came out. I needed to get the lyrics down before the movie started last Friday. I love the movie! I have the posters in my classroom. The second wasn't the best, but it was cheesy enough for me! Now I have an excuse to dance while playing Baseball! Thanks Disney!

Cacciatore Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

RaLoren Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

Yea, I'm 24, single no kids, have the DVD of the original and both soundtracks. Dug the new one, Sharpay and Ryan saved the movie.

Heather Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:36 PM EST

Hi. I'm 16 so... i can sort of get away with this.
LUCAAAS! Finally. I overwhelmingly hoped Gabriella would ditch Troy (who's not all that great anyway) for Ryan.

Lisa Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:35 PM EST

I'm 28 with no kids and I watched it. I was introduced to HSM last summer through my 13 year old cousin. No crushes on the cast. I do think it's just good clean fun & I like to be able to talk about this stuff with my younger cousins (that are all still under 18)

t3hdow Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:29 PM EST

And for the record, I'm a 20 year old male.

t3hdow Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:29 PM EST

I'll admit that I'm biased against High School Musical for two reasons:
1) I hate musicals with a passion
2) it's yet another example why Disney Channel is far past its prime.
Even if I overlook the awful singing and cheesy acting of the first HSM, the plot is nothing more than a weak retread of Eddie's Million Dollar Cookoff (another Disney Channel Original Movie). This station used to be really good but witnessing crap like HSM and Hannah Montana (which rips off the same premise of the much better Disney Channel series The Famous Jett Jackson) dominating the once great Disney Channel makes me sick to my stomach. Unlike the 80s and 90s, kids programming in this decade is mostly trite, unimaginative crap that's insulting to their intelligence. In the early days of Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, it was the exact opposite. They deserve better than this.

Tiffany Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:28 PM EST

I am 23 and I watched HSM2 with my 20 year old sister and her friend and I tivoed it for my step-daughter. I thought it was pretty catchy and that Zac Efron is pretty good looking (He is only 3-4 years younger than me so it isn't that inappropriate). I definitely think the soundtrack will be the #1 album of the year, it has already sold over 600,000 copies. My daughter bought it the first day and paid extra to get a poster. I look forward to seeing the next one on the big screen.

dj30 Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

Yes, I am a 30-year old male too ashamed to admit to anyone that I thorougly enjoyed the music and dancing from HSM2...have not seen the original - but I'm glad that kids have positive images to be entertained by...

Tricia Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

Liked HSM2 on first viewing, but couldn't really "get into it" because my 6-year-old daughter and her best friend were dancing around the room the whole movie. Upon the second watching by ourselves the next morning, I decided that I loved it! And, I'm going against the crowd -- LOVED....LOVED Fabulous. Cause it's cheesy and fun!

Lauren Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:22 PM EST

Wow, everyone else has me beat, I'm just an (almost) 19 y/o girl. I'm glad everyone else watched it too, I was super excited for it. Not as impressed as the original (how odd), but still entertaining. I can hear my older sister watching it right now (I Don't Dance). The soundtrack could be better, their voices sounded too computerized for the most part...buuuuut I'll probably still end up with it. :)

Snarf Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 05:10 PM EST

To qoute Elvira, there's nothing wrong with good wholesome family entertainment so long as it's full of sex and violence.

lorene Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:59 PM EST

I believe I have everyone beat. I'm 44. I actually was bored one night , flipping channels when I came across HSM BEFORE it was a hit. I remember thinking it wasn't bad. it entertained me enough to keep watching. Then I remember it exploding!
I was like WHAT? Are we talking about the same show? Anyway, it's what Disney does best and for those who hate it, why are you watching or listening to anything said about it? I just wish I would've thought of a viewing party at my children's bookstore. bummer. I haven't seen all of HSM2 but it didn't capture me like the first. To suckers:1-movies aimed at young girls is what makes the money for Disney, duh.2-No cliques? maybe you're school was too large (I doubt it) but most schools do have cliques and EVERYONE who the popular kids are AND what it takes to be popular in that respective crowd.3-It doesn't unfortunately always end with childhood. Give people a break and let them enjoy some WHOLESOME entertainment for once!

jim Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

I'm 35 and do have am inappropiate crush on Zac. I know, eww. But, the crush didn't mean I like HSM2. If the kids on Saved By the Bell had been forced to come up with a musical in a week. It would have been HSM2.

Faye Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

I am 40 years old no small kids and not only did I watch HSM (1 and 2) I plan on buying both soundtracks and having my entire wedding party sing "Everyday" right after the preacher annouces "You are now man and wife" The best part about the movie is that there is no character not to love, including Sharpay. IT.WAS.AWESOME.

Rick Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

My household loved it, and yes, we do have kids, but my wife and I enjoyed a good old fashioned musical without nasty pieces. A movie the whole family can enjoy with a positive message.

me! =)~ Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:17 PM EST

Alright, my turn......I'm 25, with no kids (not even in the forseeable future) and I decided to watch HSM/HSM2 just for the simple fact that when I went to see "Hairspray' feel in LOVE with Zac Efron! I have seen "Hairspray" about 6 times! I couldn't profess my love for him though until I could confirm that he was at least 18.....Thank god he's 19 or all I would be hearing is, "My name is Chris Hansen & you're on 'To Catch a Predator', you grosso pediphile!"
Anyways, HSM/HSM2 were decent (not the best) yet you cant deny the talent of not only the kids in the movie but the Dir. Kenny Ortega! My god! I went to an event where they honored him & this man has done SO much in the entertainment biz that it would knock you off your feet! I mean, this man is the person who came up with the concept on how the water fountains would show at the Belligio in Vegas! It's insane!
BTW- Love Zac's look in Hairspray MUCH MORE than in HSM! He must have the Elvis look ALL THE TIME! =)

Hannah Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

My 21st birthday weekend was High School Musical themed. I feel no shame.

I was let down by the sequel, but pleased as punch that Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) finally got the spotlight he deserved. Go Wildcats!

Sadie Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

I'm in my 30s and I really enjoyed it. My favorite was the baseball diamond number -- those kids can MOVE! Despite the cheese factor, it's really very wholesome, no middriff tops or anything inappropriate (even at the pool, all of the girls were wearing one-pieces). C'mon folks, quit hating.

mgm Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

My dad had to remind my daughter that she is only 7 and should not have those raging hormones yet. Her mother on the other hand...

JB Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

I'm 27 year-old guy, loved HSM2(have watched it twice) and am just starting to feel comfortable talking about it. I decided to check out HSM last week to see what all the hype was about and I because I love to channel my inner 12 year-old girl. I wasn't overly impressed but decided to record HSM2. The sequel was SO much better...maybe the increased cheese factor appealed to me! I have not been able to get the songs out of my head! And yeah, I totally have developed an inappropriate crush. It's kinda sad!

Christine Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

I actually haven't watched HSM2, but plan on catching it on one of its many reruns. Funny thing, I watched HSM for the first time on DVD with my friends, a couple who are married and have a 1 year old. They HATED it. And yet, the other weekend, my 25 year old friend and I (I'm 22) watched it; she loved it, and it actually grew on me. I just thought it was funny that the people who have a direct connection to children could barely stomach it.

PS: to the poster who had Creme Brulee ice cream- good idea! I loved that character! to the other poster, I hate Gabriella too!

jmJM Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

I think I've got you all beat: I'm 41, but then again, I watched with my kids who were SCREAMing "IT'S ON! IT'S ON! IT'S ON!" as it was starting. It was absolute chaos in the house, with all of that screaming - even throughout the show. My daughter kept yelling, "KISS HER!!!" (she's 5 and not jealous yet). All in all, quite a hysteria-inducing show. It was all right as far as I'm concerned, and I find it very disconcerting that young girls still seem to obsess over very fey young men. It must be a psychological stage or something....

E Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

I watched with my 12 year old cousin on Friday and then my 6 year old cousin on Saturday. I would have watched by myself (age 29) anyway, but that way I had a good excuse. Some songs were catchy, but I though others were pretty bad. Mainly I was distracted by the orange tans (or was it bad lighting). Not as good as HSM1, but still fun (in that Disney Channel cheesy way). Sadly I can also say the stage musical version of HSM1 this year, and I have the soundtracks of both movies already. I think that's partly due to my inappropriate crush on Efron (I have the Hairspray soundtrack too).

mgm Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

26 with a 7 year old daughter and we had a viewing party with my parents and 19 year old sister. Also spent over $200 to see them in concert, along with my 29 year old husband, who stayed home and watched it by himself, along with football. My daughter got mad when Troy and Gabriella kissed, and I would have to say, so did I. Jealous much!

Kelsey Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

The entire musical sounded like a pop album and every song was dubbed terribly. (Most movie musical dub to cover up sounds made by the crew.) The baseball diamond scene came out of West Side Story. All the characters are sterotypes while attempting to fight the sterotypes. HSM and HSM 2 takes parts out of better musicals and dumbs them down for the tweens to watch. None of the actors really hit the emotions that their characters need to get to. When I watch the films I see the makings of a better movie, which just gets me angry. I can only hope that all the kids that flock to HSM will grow up to flock to Broadway and enjoy a much better show. (Then again, Broadway is changing to more HSM-style musicals, i.e Legally Blonde) Yes, I am a cynical, critical, musical, movie snob. Nothing you can say will change me.

Condor D. Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

Glad I'm not alone. I'm 24 and not at all ashamed to say I watched HSM2 all three nights this past weekend. Why not? It's a fun, cheesy movie and I knew what I was getting into.

I still like the first one way better and - like a lot of you - hated the song Fabulus. Bet On It (Troy's solo) was a bit awkward. And Sharpay's character got on my nerves, but that's how they wanted her to come across, I guess.

Jay Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

let's see, watched it on friday night with my 7 year old daughter, and tivo'd it. watched it Saturday morning, then again when Disney aired it on Saturday night, in case any kid missed it on Friday. so thats 3 times...once more on Sunday morning, and then we couldn't miss the sing along version on Sunday night. also tivo'd that version too. so thats 5 times over the weekend. Sadly even before it aired I had songs stuck in my head from how much it was pushed on Disney Channel. overall it was as good, if not slightly better than HSM1. but i know i could not see it for the next 6 months and be happy, but thats not gonna happen.

duranmom Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

Of course I watched HSM2! I'm a 38 YO mom to 2 girls, ages 7 and 9 so it was my *duty* to watch it. I thought it was cute, the songs are catchy and the cast is fun (and I too, have an inappropriate crush on Zac Effron, which bloomed while watching Hairspray). My 7 yo is currently singing "Fabulous" -- I did have to explain to her what "Jimmy Choo flip flops and her pink Prada tote" was, though... Kudos to Disney for putting out entertainment that most adults can actually enjoy.

Sara Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

I watched two-thirds of it, until my roommate came home, and I quickly turned the channel to "Pulp Fiction," pretending I'd been watching it all along.

Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

I watched it and thought it was great. I still love the first one best though. I didn't like all the electronica added to the voices in this soundtrack though so I don't think I will at least be buying it.

Sarah Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

There's nothing wrong with an inappropriate crush on Zac Efron. My inappropriate crush started with Hairspray though, not HSM

Dave Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:27 PM EST

I'm 25, did not watch HSM, but definitely have an inappropriate crush on Zac Efron...

DP Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

Not only did I watch it, I tivoed it, telling myself I was keeping it so my 8 year old niece and 7 year old nephew can watch it. They have yet to come over but I have watched it two other times since the Friday night airing, and, GASP, downloaded the album from Itunes. Did I mention I am a 31 year old male in grad school! Oh, and when will What Time Is It going to be available to karaoke?

LisaMama Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:23 PM EST

I'm 36 and have two boys, ages 8 and 4. We all loved HSM 1 and watched HSM 2 together. The original is better than the sequel, but they're both good clean fun. I'd rather have my kids watch this than the other garbage out there passing for kids' entertainment but is actually made for adults (hello, Shrek!). Yes, it's a squeaky clean version of life, but the messages of staying true to yourself and your friends is an important life lesson no matter how old you are.

Erin Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

I'm 26, and totally made an event out of watching it with my 24 year old friend and her husband! I even brought over Ben & Jerry's Creme Brulee ice cream as an ode to the basketball kid who wants to be a baker in the first movie! (I was dissappointed he didn't sing about any desserts in the sequel!)

My friend tried to get her 13-year-old emo kid sister to watch it with us and her response was "Do I LOOK like someone whou would watch that????" ....But then her plans to go shopping at Hot Topic were mysteriously canceled and she was right there on the couch with us!

Lili Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

Ok, I'm really lost.
Is HSM a movie?
I thought it was a weekly show, since my girls watch it all the time on TV.
I assumed they were watching a different episode each week. We live in Qc, and they watch HSM transalted in french, the song are in english thought.

idigress Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 03:16 PM EST

I have watched it at least 3 times with my 7-year-old daughter this week. I did not hate it, but loved the "sing-a-long" version so much better. I like to karaoke to the beat! I am 36 years old...sad

Dawn Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

Me = 27; HSM2= waiting for me on my DVR when I get home next weekend. Kenny Ortega = brilliant. Cliques = alive and well in high school and in life.

Anne Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

I am 34 with a 5 year old. HSM2 was supposed to be THE event of the weekend-lots of hype at the house. While my daughter declared it better than HSM, and the best movie she has ever seen (she obviously forgot that she had seen Star Wars), it was a painful watch for the 'rents. And I loved the first one. Way too much preening on "Troy's" part. And me thinks Ortega borrowed too many moves from Footloose and the Beat It video. But we all know we will shell out cash to see the third installment in the theater. Sigh-We're all in this together.

Sarah Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

I'm an adult. No kids. Love High School Musical. And it has a MUCH BETTER morale of the story compared to the musical I worshipped as a kid, Grease.

Marisa Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

My college best friend and I were amped all week for HSM2(hey, we already paid for cable and so we didn'thvae to go pay for a new movie in the theater) and we're 20. Is that really adult? I think this has been one of my more juvenile summers technically, being way too excited for Harry Potter and now for HSM2.
I thought the songs were a little too hip hop and techno and wanted more of the original but Lucas Gabreel rocks my socks off

Vance Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

Im 30 and male and not only did I love HSM and already watch HSM2 twice this past weekend, I just got tickets to the touring version on stage. I know. It'll be me and all these 14 year old girls and will probably look creepy but whatever, I love the cheesiness of it all. I wasn't sure if I was laughing AT HSM/HSM2 or WITH IT but I figure it's got to be entertaining since I was laughing so hard. Period.

Jackie Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

I watched the original HSM gazillions of times, (yes out of my own free will), and I'm over the age of 14 (by a...few...years). It was soo much better than the sequel, although there were parts about the second one that I liked. That Ryan (Lucas Grabeel)got out from under Sharpay's shadow and got to sing/dance more. But were Monique Coleman and Corbin Bleu used more? Troy/Sharpay/Gabriella were all just boring and annoying and I really wished they'd do more with the other characters (and I wish Ms. Darbus had been back more - she's always a blast). I doubt the kids will get the "message" from this movie as it was more flashy and colorful and not as "deep" as the first, where the message was displayed on a giant, neon billboard (hello, "Status Quo" anyone?). But with those hoards of kids still in love with Zac and Ashley, yea, the CD will be #1 for a loong loooooooong time. But I still like the first one better.

Jen Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

I have not yet watched "High School Musical." I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it because I know the second that my friends found out they would laugh at me. I'll have to watch it in the dead of night. (I'm 22.)

My 20-year-old sister has watched them both and really enjoyed them.

And we both like Zac Efron (I saw him in Hairspray) - he's adorable and fun! It's not THAT inappropriate, is it?

Laura Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

34 yrs old and watch HSM 1 & 2 ... with my niece! uuff. And I am kind of turning red because I did ' develop an inappropriate crush on Zac Efron— ' BUT in a healthy way jaa.
I did like the frist one better but the second was sweet.

Snooks Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:35 PM EST

Yep. I'm 30 and I watched it. I love a good musical. Also, as I was flipping channels and came across HSM2, my friend's 14 month old (I decided to stay in and watch her)became completely mesmerized and quit crying.

It must be Zac's dreamy eyes...

I'm 37 yrs old, and I watched it with my two children (10 and 7) and I liked the songs HSM2 better; but still prefer the message in HSM. I have seen the first about 6 times. I appreciate Disney for putting out these types of programs.

Louise Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

Have to admit I'm completely out of the whole HSM loop. At least I was until I took my 8 year old niece to see Hairspray and she filled me in on the guy playing Link. And I thought it was bad sharing inapproriate (for me) crushes with my 18 year old niece. Anyway, still don't really understand HSM, but caught the end of HSM2,which made no sense, but I hunkered down for 30 mins of HSM1 - the Pop Up Version. That was fun.

Megmamegmeg Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

I watched it, and i hated it. It wasn't even fun at all, just over the top cheese and the songs weren't even good. I wished Baby V and Efron would jump off a cliff. I loved the first one. I'm 26.

gokarm Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

I don't want to offend anyone, but I haven't heard from anyone like me, so I'll add my two cents. I love tv and when there's nothing on, I tend to watch second best. That happened one night while HSM was on, so having heard so much about it's stellar sales, I thought I'd check it out. I did watch the whole thing...I'm not sure if it was out of laziness or pure rubbernecking fascination that I did not change the channel. I'm not the type to appreciate a lot of kitch, particularly not modern "dubbed over glossy performances" kitch. I quite honestly can't stand a single song from HSM and if there were no singing and dancing, I'd probably enjoy it more. I tried again with HSM2, thinking it might bring some more personality and corny laugh out loud moments, but all I got was a few cringes and a gag reflex workout, particularly during the "Sharpey by the pool" sequence. I can't imagine why anyone would think this is a good role-model for kids. But I'm not a parent, so I won't condemn.

Josh Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

Hi, I'm 23 years old and I watched HSM2 twice over the weekend with my wife. We have no kids and we watched because we're fans of the original. I'd been looking forward to #2 for months and months and was very pleased by it. I'm not sure it's as good as the original, but it's very close. They're wonderful films and anyone who puts them down because they're unrealistic or whatever is totally missing the point.
On another subject, the poster who said there are no cliques in schools was very lucky with the school he/she went to. Cliques are a big deal, and this is from someone who was on the outside of the cliques watching them interact. Especially in the first one, the way the groups sit together and don't interact, and the way people in certain groups are discouraged or outcast for doing different things or socializing with different people. Cliques are very real and it is not sexist or stupid to portray them. People must be pretty blind to not see them.

Coach's Mistress Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:13 PM EST

I watched HSM2 with my kids Friday night, and since then they've watched it another 3 times. We've seen the first one about a jillion times as well. I think both movies are great for kids and a simple (guilty) pleasure for grown-ups. both movies have positive messages, fantastic dancing, and #2 has some great songs. People who bash these movies don't have children. I hope they keep making more HSM. Kids need more good clean fun on tv.

castlenes Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

I watched it. I like it better the the first one. No real reason. I still dream that some day I will be some where and we will break into a fantastic song and dance number that everyone knows and no one practiced. Like on Fame.

I like Zac but I inappropriately love Daniel (he was so funny in the Extras season 2). Frack you Details Magazine for making him so hot.

Heather Wixson Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

So, uh, yeah, this is where you come to confess right? I am 29 years old, no kids, and I cleared my plans Friday night to stay home, order pizza and watch HSM2 (I even made sure the hubby was working so he couldn't mock me while I was watching it). It was super-cute and I feel like Chris Hanson from "To Catch a Predator" is going to come knocking on my door any day since I go around calling Zac Efron that "cutie-patootie". Tisdale's tan was a little much but I think that was a reflection of her character. But I really almost liked 2 better than the first and both are currently residing on my TiVo and will stay there for at least a few more weeks...so there. I admitted it. And to the kid who said there weren't any cliques in HS- you must go to the perfect HS because we had them all over the place. I was in the drama group.

Anne Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

hi,i'm 36 and I am not afraid to admit that I enjoy HSM and HSM2 - of course I work with kids and this gives me a good excuse. I liked the music from the first film - the soundtrack is on my ipod - and the kitschy, squeaky clean take on high school. pure entertaining fluff. I laugh along with Sharpay and Ryan's antics. HSM2 wasn't as good as the first one - neither the music or the plot - but thats kind of besides the point. For all those haters, chill, take a look and just enjoy yourself.

Rachel Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

I'm 26. I watched it and liked it. The songs were catchy, the dancing was fun, and it had a nice (if overly simplistic) message.

I'd rather watch stuff like this and adult tripe like Two and a Half Men.

jazzsquare Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

I'm an almost 30 year old female and not only did I watch HSM2, I invited friends over for dinner to have a viewing party. We're all 30 (or over) and have no connections to children that would justify us watching it. We just wanted to be part of the cultural zeitgest. Plus, that Zak Efron is hot. Don't hate, appreciate.

DJ Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

I did watch HSM2, mainly because I have a 6-year-old girl for whom this was the social event of the season. I actually enjoyed HSM1...not so much the sequel, although I think the music is stronger in HSM2.

Danica Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:54 PM EST

I am 30 and love HSM and enjoyed HSM2 as well. I actually cut my trip to NYC a little short cause the hotel I was staying at did not have the Disney Channel. Ok so I also left cause I spent a night's stay on a Wii instead but the HSM was definitely a factor! :P

suckers Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

i cant believe anyone would watch those. i am totally opposed to watching a movie where the title gives away everything that could ever happen. & fyi, there are no "cliques" in high school. i dont know if there ever was, but i can guarantee there arent any now. & there certainly arent "popular" people that the whole school knows. thats just not possible with a school population of 3000. everybody hangs out w/ everybody. if there were cliques, i would be considered a "nerd" b/c i get good grades & was #3 in our class, but i hang out w/ a lot of "skaters" & "band geeks" even a couple of "sports nuts" & thats the way it is!!! everyone hangs out w/ people who are like them & they can be friends w/, not b/c someone is "popular" or w/e... & im so sick of that being the focus of all the movies directed at girls! that is extremely sexist...

dma69 Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

HSM 1&2: better than Ambien to put you to sleep.

Iowegian Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

I am a 34-year old mother of a first grader and I LOVE these movies! I thought the second one was "sasier", the dance numbers more fun, the music was "kickier" and I do have an inappropriate crush on Zac Efron - but I don't feel bad about it! The first one was well-done, safe, but just not quite as much fun. I can't get the songs out of my head this week... I look forward to the 3rd.

coco Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:29 PM EST

i'm 31...was bored at home last saturday night and after some serious channel surfing stopped to see what all thebuzz is about.
i watched for about an hour but got bored and continued with the surfing.
and its true, the dancing with the star female looks too old for the part...you can definitively tell the difference between her and the other castmates.

kaygee Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

i'm 28 and watched HSM and tivo'd HSM2, watched at 11:30 pm that night. in my defense i live with 4 kids in the house and all of them love HSM that they watch it literally over 5 times a day. no choice but to have it grow on you right? :) i prefer the songs in HSM2 though. ok ok and i just got back from my lunch break where i bought a tv guide mag from cvs that has HSM2 on the cover. and now i run and hide in a corner.

hannabanana Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

I'm a 29 year old (straight) male. It wasn't that bad, actually. But I hate when non-athletic actors 'pretend' to play sports. Didn't these guys ever once pick up a baseball bat or throw a ball when they were kids? That baseball sequence was painful to watch.

Heather Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

I'm 22, and not ashamed to say that I watched, and enjoyed it. I work with kids, so I guess I have an excuse. It wasn't as good as the first one, but it was still entertaining! I never liked Gabriella, in this movie or the first one. I liked Ryan a lot in this movie, and I agree that Fabulous song was terrible. The girls in these movies can't sing at all. Thankfully, the boys make up for it.
While these movies may be cheesy and ridiculous, the messages are good. You can't disagree with the fact that it is better for 11 year-old kids to sing and dance to High School Musical than a Rhianna video.

rajshaker Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:22 PM EST

It's good clean fun! But Ashley Tisdale's (Sharpay's) perma-orange-tan was EXTREMELY distracting.

MM Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:18 PM EST

O.k., o.k. I watched HSM and HSM2 (31 yrs old). In my defense I didn't watch the original HSM until last weekend and figured I might as well watch the sequel. Unlike previous posters, I liked the 2nd better. Lucas Grabeel and Corbin Bleu are much better subjects for inappropriate crushes than Zac Efron.

Anna Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

I'm 25 and I definitely watched it, although I forgot it was this weekend so I missed the beginning. It's a guilty pleasure and it's just fun to watch a simplified world. I do, however, have a huge problem with Corbin Bleu and his love interest who was in Dancing with the Stars mainly because you can tell he's 18 and she's 26. ANytime they tried to do a cutesey thing, it felt weird.

Trish Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

I, too, succumbed to HSM (I'm 26). I watched the original one last fall, and actually spent my Friday evening watching HSM2. I definitely like the first one better, the second one was more cheesy.
Unfortunately, between HSM and Hairspray, I am appraoching inappropriate crush territory, although I keep telling myself its simply respect for genine triple-threat talent (His golf course solo was AWFUL though.) I have a new respect for Lucas Grabeel after the second one. And a lowered respect for Vanessa Hudgens, who seemed to spend the whole thing pouting.
Overall, I liked them both, but the first one was better, and I have NO intention of supporting it on ice!

Annie Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

My friend and I (both of us 21 years old), got together Friday for the express purpose of watching High School Musical 2. I'd seen the original last summer and it was way better. Better enough to almost be considered for a guilty pleasure. The only good part about the sequel was when Sharpay asked the percussionist to give her a beat so she could walk out of the room with some attitude.

Maybe I'm cynical in my old age, but Troy and Gabriella make a sickening couple. And not sickeningly cute either. I just didn't find them believable, which is odd since those actors date in real life.

But yeah. I watched. And I'm not too ashamed about it, either.

Sara Tue, Aug 21, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

Hi. My name is Sara. I'm 25, and I watched High School Musical 2.

(Hi, Sara!)

It was cute, it was fluff, it was a bit cheesier than the first. I liked Lucas Grabeel's character better this time around. I hated "Fabulous".
