Which new fall series have you buzzing?

Aug 13, 2007, 12:02 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: Television

This just in: America* is buzzing about ABC's forthcoming sitcom Cavemen, based on a series of Geico commercials. While I find this information borderline unbelievable, a poll of 3,100 people ages 13-64 says otherwise; Cavemen ranked No. 1 among buzzed-about new series, followed by NBC's Bionic Woman, CBS' Kid Nation, and ABC's Pushing Daisies.

Perhaps more importantly, though, the poll, conducted by TV Dailies, also asked folks which new shows they would definitely watch this fall. The top four (in order) were Bionic Woman, Cavemen, Fox's Kitchen Nightmares, and ABC's Grey's Anatomy spinoff Private Practice, followed by a seven-way tie for fifth among CBS' Cane, Kid Nation, and The Big Bang Theory; Fox's Next Great American Band and K-Ville; The CW's Reaper; and NBC's Journeyman.

The bad news here is that apparently, America is not yet feeling the love for NBC's delightful spy dramedy Chuck. I watched a screener of the pilot episode last week, and fell for it with the kind of enthusiasm and fervor that means it's most likely marked for cancellation before Thanksgiving. (See: Smith, Threshold, Aliens in the Family.) Perhaps the following YouTube clip will begin to turn the tide? How can you not root for a show with a leading lady named Yvonne Strzechowski (who happens to be terrific)?

Also not on the buzz list: Fox's The Return of Jezebel James. I have to say, the combination of Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose in a sitcom from Amy Sherman-Palladino sure sounded promising. But after catching the preview below, I'm having serious doubts. I mean, when your trump card is a sneezing bulldog, it might be time for a rewrite.

Are you buzzing about the same series in the TV Dailies poll? Or are there other members of the freshman that are more likely to score a spot on your DVR schedule come September?

* Not including any person I've spoken to this summer.

CHUCK is the best show it is funny and i like the whole spy thing....I LOVW CHUCK :D

Jen Thu, Nov 8, 2007 at 05:34 PM EST

I love love love Chuck,Private Practice, and Cane. I really hope the networks will give them a chance. My tivo is set every week!!!

randy Tue, Oct 9, 2007 at 06:28 PM EST

the worst new show is Chuck my favorite is Journeyman

lahlah Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 05:28 AM EST

Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsay is awesome - Chef Ramsay rocks! He's like the Donald Trump of food.

Latin-Blog Wed, Sep 26, 2007 at 02:53 PM EST

I really like Cane as per Bionic Woman, I'm not so sure but i'll see tonight.

That cave thingy? PLS, the commercials were enough!

Mel Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST

I'm looking forward to 'Journeyman' because I really like Kevin McKidd in 'Rome' and also in 'Kingdom of Heaven.'

I will also be checking out 'Pushing Daisies' and 'The Return of Jezebel James' because of AS-P.

monica Sat, Aug 18, 2007 at 11:45 PM EST

I'm excited about: Chuck, Lipstick Jungle, Private Practice, Cashmere Mafia, Gossip Girl, and Aliens in America.

But I'm willing to try: Journeyman, Life, Bionic Woman, Sam I Am, Pushing Daisies, K-Ville, New Amsterdam, and The Return of Jezebel James.

Joyce Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 10:31 AM EST

I watched Chuck about a month ago and LOVED it. Which means it will be cancelled...SIGH. Another show that I may give a try is the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Only got to watch half of it but looks rather good. Pushing Daisies and Private Practice is a MUST.

Emily Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 11:02 PM EST

Sign me up for CHUCK! I haven't really paid too much attention to the upcoming season yet... but that clip of CHUCK looks like great fun!

FrankyP Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 08:16 PM EST

I agree with BIGFAN, I think Kid Nation is the way to go!

Joslyn Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Reaper, Aliens in America and Kid Nation are all getting a chance on my DVR. Jezebel James, maybe, though I'm wary of the laugh-track. Giant pass on Caveman - not even for the train wreck factor. Ugh.

GeeMoney Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

I would commit to watching the "Bionic Woman" if the network promised to have Lindsay Wagner do a guest spot or something. Lindsay Wagner ROCKED as the Bionic Woman back in the day. And it would be even cooler if Lee Majors showed up!

Henry Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

I'm down for checking out Chuck. My boss was raving about Pushing Daisies and Reaper before Comic-Con and had me wanting to check them out. Cavemen will be among the first casualties of the season. Trust me on this.

mark in nyc Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 10:10 AM EST

Dont know if it has been mentioned but Gordan Ramsey's Kithcen Nightmares...the UK version is great already.

fredric Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 09:12 AM EST

Add me to the queue for Pushing Daisies. Somewhat interested in Kid Nation and Journeyman as well, and maybe the Sarah Conner show just out of curiosity. Was excited about Bionic Woman until I heard Isaiah is involved - I'll pass on it now.

Hannah Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 07:51 AM EST

Once again, I think my head may explode during the premiere weeks...Too many shows to check out before I can cut my viewing down to something manageable. I'm most looking forward to Pushing Daisies, though. The lead actor is adorable, and I love the story idea. I also want to check out Torchwood, Bionic Woman, and Chuck. Hey, EW when is your Fall TV Preview coming out?

Nix Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 03:24 AM EST

I'm trying to be positive about "Life", but I'm *thissure* it will fall to the Band of Brothers alumni curse, viz to wit: "Boomtown", "Standoff", "The Black Donellys", "LAX", "What About Brian" (which did last a couple of seasons), "Jericho" (which will not outlive its resurrection), and so forth. The only show unaffected is "ER" (with Scott Grimes in it for several years now), but that's because nothing can kill the damned thing.

BIGFAN Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 01:24 AM EST

Can't wait for KID NATION!!!

This will be the greatest show on television.

Andrea Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:52 PM EST

Definitely "Chuck" and "Pushing Daisies." I've seen the pilots for both and "Chuck" was great, but "Pushing Daisies" was superb. After "Dead Like Me" and "Wonderfalls," it may have finally elevated Bryan Fuller to the top of my list of favorite television writers. "Daisies" is just so unique, imaginative, sweet and clever. But "Chuck" is very good popcorn entertainment.

Stephen Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 09:55 PM EST

I think "Cavemen" will be the "Joey" of the year. Big bzz after execs try to capitalize, big opening ratings, then fading into oblivion.

Stephen Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 09:55 PM EST

I think "Cavemen" will be the "Joey" of the year. Big bzz after execs try to capitalize, big opening ratings, then fading into oblivion.

Yeeahhh! Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 09:47 PM EST

Chuck because I really want to know what thats about

RobC Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 09:32 PM EST

Anyone up for some "Dirty Sexy Money"? Any show created by Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Brothers & Sisters) and stars one of the season' best ensembles is worth a few viewings.

ktaz Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 08:16 PM EST

Really looking forward to Kville, a post-Katrina cop show in New Orleans has great potential. After seeing Julianna Margulies get punched in the face during the trailer, I'm excited for Canterbury's Law although it's a mid-season replacement.

Sports Chick Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 07:50 PM EST

"Cane" is the only new show of interest to me. Jimmy Smits -- enough said! "Cavemen" -- no way it makes it past two episodes. And there's only one "Bionic Woman" for me -- Lindsay Wagner.

BaDonkDonk Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 07:50 PM EST

I think "The Return of Jezebel James" is a stupid title. They should call it something like "My Sister Is My Baby's Momma!" or "My Sister is Having My Baby!" or something that tells you what the show is all about.

Richard Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

I'm a slut for time travel stories, but usually find disappointment. I hope that NBC's Journeyman will be a strong fit with Heroes.

Becky Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 07:46 PM EST

Thanks for this clip of Chuck! I will definitely watch it-it looks absolutely creative and hilarious ;)

Snarf Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

Bionic Woman, and Moonlight are the ones I'm checking out.

graeme Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 05:16 PM EST

I can't wait to see Kate Walsh on my screen every week where she gets more than 2 minutes of screentime (and yet still manages to outact everyone).

BrandonK Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

Parker Posey should never be in a comedy with a laugh track. Also, somebody fire the voice-over guy...his voice is giving me mono!

Raven_Moon Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 05:10 PM EST

I am crazy excited about "Pushing Dasies" & "Chuck." I can't wait to see them. Unfortunately, shows I'm often excited about usually get cancelled fairly quickly, with exception to "The Office" & "Scrubs."
I'm also a bit curious about about "Life," "Journeyman" & "Moonlight."

BrandonK Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 05:08 PM EST

People may definitely watch Cavemen, but I'm betting for one or two episodes. I can't stand the commercials, so I obviously won't be watching the sitcom.
Chuck and Pushing Daisies look interesting, and Bionic Woman could be great.

Dave Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 05:07 PM EST

I am interested in seeing if Bionic Woman is as good as it looks. I'm really leery about getting involved in another cool sci fi-ish themed series if it's just going to get canceled at the end of the season anyway. Even if it gets good numbers, look how many people have left Lost. Without a finite ending in sight, even Lost would probably get canceled in the next few seasons. The networks really suck.

Mike Cane Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 04:39 PM EST

Journeyman
http://mikecane.wordpress.com/2007/08/13/journeyman-interesting-bits/

whol Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

Honestly, Pushing Daisies is the only one that looks interesting to me.

TokenBlackGirl Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

I've been looking forward to "Kitchen Nightmares" and "Private Practice." "Life" and "Journeyman" will get chances because of their lead actors (so good to see Damien Lewis on network tv.)

sam Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

The endless ads for Chuck are stupid and annoying. There is nothing in them that makes me want to see the show at all. I imagine that it will be a hit.

NYC Strong Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

I saw Caveman, and although it was not good, it was not as bad as everybody makes it out to be. At least it sort of takes chances with trying to make statements, be it poorly, about race.

I also saw Chuck and sarah connor chronicles. They will be programmed on my DVR. Sarah was pretty true to the feel of a Terminator movie and Chuck has my kind of humor. For those who saw it, the Vicky Vale song cracked me up.

Alison Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

I'm actually looking forward to "Back to You" with Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton. It looks like the new fall show I'm most likely to enjoy watching week after week, after the buzz has died down.

marvin3O Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

Pushing daisies!!!! I was able to watch the first episode and it is really THAT good!!! My only fear is that the show is a litte too unconventional and I am not sure people will embrace it as much as I did. And also... where is the buzz for Gossip Girl?? After I saw some of the previews and ads for the show I really can't wait to watch the show.

Carly Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:45 PM EST

I am really looking forward to The Big Bang Theory. I saw the pilot and it is the funniest new sitcom I have seen in a while. I can't wait for The Big Bang Theory this Fall.

ericalina Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

"buzzing" in caveman's case must certainly mean "taking bets to see when this dreck will be cancelled," yes? YES? i hope so!

Jules Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

Reaper and Chuck look interesting. What I'm really looking forward to are Friday Night Lights and The Office returning. They're the best shows on television.

Dahlia Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

Pushing Dasies, Pushing Dasies, Pushing Dasies! This show has a sweetness and is off-kilter in such a lovely way that I cringe at the thought of America not "getting it" and putting us through the pain of losing such a heart-warming and incredibly romantic show. It feels un-TV in the way that Arrested Development did, and we all know how that turned out. Please, EW, take up the cause!

Heather Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

The only new series I'm adding to my regular rotation (10 series and counting) is "Pushing Daisies."

junior Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

I know the "Caveman" preview doesn't look good (the "30 Rock" previews weren't that good either) but I must keep the faith that Nick Kroll and Julie White wouldn't get involved if it was THAT bad.

And "Chuck" looks beyond annoying to me (although I loved the lead actor in "Less Than Perfect"). I too am waiting for "Dirty Sexy Money" (for Donald Sutherland, natch).

Ceballos Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

In addition to Bionic Woman (which looks fantastic), I'm buzzing about the shows from my "Six Feet Under" peeps:

"The Return of Jezebel James" with Lauren Ambrose and Parker Posey and "Dirty Sexy Money" with Peter Krause, as well as Donald Sutherland and Jill Claybourgh.

Aaron Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

I watched a screener of Aliens in America (before it was recast) and, although I feel slightly guilty about it, I was cracking up the entire time.

Sadie Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 02:15 PM EST

Definitely Chuck (I loved Zachary Levi on Less Than Perfect)and Bionic Woman. I'm also interested in Journeyman, mainly because of Kevin McKidd.

Kate Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

I'll give Chuck a chance...it looks like it could be really cute. I'm also looking forward to watching the first episode of Journeyman and hope that will be good too.

Raegan Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

I'm going to watch Chuck, Gossip Girl and Dirty Sexy Money. They'll all probably be canceled. Although, they aren't on Fox, so maybe they have a shot!

MarieElaine Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

cashmere mafia and gossip girl are the two i'm most excited about.

i'll probably check out bionic woman and the sarah connor chronicles too.

J Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

New tv shows I'm most excited for: Bionic Woman & Pushing Daisies. (Oh, & the return of Futurama!) Runners-up are Chuck (premise didn't grab me initially, but I've been hearing good things about it) & Jezebel James (hope it doesn't waste that great pedigree).
Cavemen looks like rubbish, but the only show I'm actively hoping will fail is Cane, because I'm dying for Nestor Carbonell to return to Lost for a Richard Alpert flashback. Private Practice is very 'meh', & as a general rule I steer well-clear of reality shows.

Ashley Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

I have to go with Reaper, Chuck, and Private Practice.

Reaper has won me over, solely by having Kevin Smith direct the pilot episode.

tnygrl Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

New shows that I have a feeling I will get hooked on (and have a conniption if they get cancelled too early)

Pushing Daisies
Bionic Woman
Life
Journeyman (but only because I adore Kevin McKidd)

Please, please - may all the networks give new shows more than ONE airing before axing them. Grrr...

Kelsey Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Everytime I hear about "Cavemen" I die a little inside. Why do sitcoms like this exist while I have been scared for a while that Scrubs wouldn't get another season?

"Pushing up Daises" looks intersting but it could over do the zany/quirky and be terrible (just like Men in Trees). I am a firm believer that you can not mass produce quirkiness. I will be watching "Chuck" because of the name, it intrigues me for no reason whatsoever.

A lot of the new fall series just look like rip offs of older shows. There is one show about a vampire who solves crime that I forgot the name of.(Is that Moonlighting?) I smell "Angel" a mile away. It would take sheer brillance for me to accepts a replacement for any Whedon show.

The shows I have been waiting for:
Scrubs
30 Rock
Futurama (Coming to Comedy Central in Feb.)
Pushing Up Daisies
The Office

I have been so busy lately that it would take a lot to make me invest in new characters and concepts. I'm lazy, I know.

AllThatIsgold1 Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

I'm going to watch Chuck, but I'm going to do it grudgingly, even though it'll probably win me over eventually. To me, it seems like a ripoff of Jake 2.0's "Uber geek becomes super spy." plotline. I loved that Jake 2.0, and it got cancelled before it really had a chance to shine.

Sarah Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

I will watch Chuck. Zachary Levi who plays Chuck totally reminds me of Adam Brody.

Miss Dahlia Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:34 PM EST

I also can't wait for Chuck, Gossip Girl, Jezebel James... Can you tell I was an OC and GG fan? Really not feeling Bionic Woman or Caveman however. Especially not the Caveman. I'm guessing the people who watch Caveman are the same ones that keep "About Jim" on the air.

Vicky Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

I definitely want to check out Pushing Daisies and Reaper. I'm semi-interested in Bionic Woman. But that's about it. My b/f mentioned this weekend that he was looking forward to Life on NBC. Has anyone heard anything good about it?

Torin Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

I can't wait for Bionic Woman & The Sarah Connor Chronicles (mid-season). I also have high hopes for K-Ville (mainly for Anthony Anderson), Jezebel Jones (I hope the series is better than the pilot) and Back to You (I hope I can enjoy a sitcom with a live audience again).

I want to have an interest in Chuck and Reaper, but I don't like that much comedy mixed with my action shows. I hope that Cavemen only lasts one episode.

melissa Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

Several of the new shows look/sound promising. But the only ones I definitely plan to check out, in order of interest, are:
1. Pushing Daisies (which I am sure I will love and it will become one of my favorites)
2. Bionic Woman
3. Chuck

Gretchen Weiners Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

Parker Posey can do no wrong in my book so I'll keep hope for Jezebel. I'm excited about Gossip Girl too.

GingerCat Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

I'm with Dominique--I'm not judging Jezebel James by the trailer. Studios are notorious for putting out ridiculous, pandering trailers. Right now, Jezebel James is my only must-see show of the fall.

SuzieC Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

For me it's:
Kid Nation, interesting concept.
Pushing Daisies, saw commercials and it immediately got my attention.
Chuck, Spies!
Reaper, looks like it might be worth at least one viewing.
Apparently the people commenting here were not of that 3,100 polled about Cavemen which...well there's no description that really fits it. Why ABC? You were doing so well with programming choices!

klo Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

OMG - I didnt know Kitchen Nightmares was coming to FOX! I caught this show (BBC America version) and was intoxicated by it -- so excited!!

dala Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

dirty sexy money and gossip girl!!

ThePieMakers Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

Obviously it's all about PUSHING DAISIES! Lee Pace is a god and this show has the perfect amount of quirky drama mixed with rom-com that its certain to be a cult (and hopefully mass market) hit!

Stacey Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

@Mark in nyc: Dear God, did Flash Gordon suck... I can't believe I actually watched the whole thing. That's one I can remove from the DVR schedule.

Tamara Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

I'm buzzing about Moonlight, but only because of Jason Dohring. Chuck looks good, but hard to imagine as a series.

Carli Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

What am I most looking forward to...Katee Sackhoff on my screen more than one night a week! So I guess my answer is Bionic Woman ;)

Nat X Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

As a former Atlantan, I am totally going to watch Cavemen, mostly because it's supposed to take place in the ATL. That's funny in itself. I can't wait for New Amsterdam and Moonlight, which DO look like Forever Knight (or Angel) rip-offs, but hopefully will be more original. And I'll watch Kid Nation, although the concept is creepy.

Jenn Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

I'm excited for "Chuck" and the "Heroes" mini-series later in the year.

mark in nyc Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:39 AM EST

The Bionic Woman looks great.
If anyone ws looking forward to see Flash Gordon...too bad for them...that show sucked hard. It was like a bad 80's rendition of The Bad Acting/writing/directing school

Dominique L. Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

Amy Sherman-Palladino hates the Jezebel James trailer and TV Guide's Michael Ausiello promises it doesn't do the show justice, so I'm not worried.

tvfan Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:35 AM EST

i'm most looking forward to "Dirty Sexy Money" on ABC with Peter Krause (Nate from Six Feet Under).
As for existing shows, I'm counting the days until season 2 of Friday Night Lights - the best show on network tv - everyone must watch!

Stacey Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:31 AM EST

Am I not watching NBC enough? I haven't seen any commercials at all for Chuck. If I had, I would be buzzing about it, as I am all about the spy shows. (*sniff* Alias *sniff*) I am planning on watching Bionic Woman and Journeyman. I also agree with everyone else who believes that the buzz for Cavemen is solely to watch a train wreck air on live television.

eliz.s. Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

I'm w/furry_tom; I think all the buzz "Cavemen" is getting is b/c people think it can't be anything but awful. I was looking forward to the Parker Posey show, but from reviews I've read, it doesn't look to be worthy of adding to my DVR. So for now, "Pushing Daisies" is my most-looked-forward-to show.
http://elizs.vox.com

Stephanie Travitsky Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

Caveman looks beyond retarded, Moonlight is rip off of Forever Knight, but Chuck looks promising.

Izzy Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

I watched the "Cavemen" pilot and it was the worst thing I ever saw. I know they are reworking it but I doubt even the best actors and writers can make that series be a hit. I personally think that it ranks high in polls because people are curious about it (mostly because they want to see for themselves if it is THAT bad).

I'm rooting for "Pushing Daisies" the most. "Chuck" should really be fun too.

furry_tom Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

RE: America is buzzing about ABC's forthcoming sitcom Cavemen
Are you sure they're just not talking about how awful it looks?
