Vanhalen_l Yowwwww! Deeedle-leedle-lee! Do you know what that sound is? That is the sweet sound of a Van Halen/David Lee Roth reunion, as well as the sound of a mammoth sheet of ice crystallizing over Hades. It was announced earlier today that Van Halen will perform live with the Diamond One for the first time in more than 20 years, on a 25-date North American tour that begins Sept. 27 in Charlotte, N.C.

At a press conference this morning at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills (where mimosas and bloody Marys were served), DLR turned the charm up to 11, spitting out soundbites like it was 1984 all over again; Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Wolfgang Van Halen mostly looked on with amusement. Roth (pictured, left, with Eddie) scissor-kicked off the festivities by stating, "This is the press conference that you probably never thought that you would see happen, certainly not while we were all young, skinny and good-looking." When a woman shouted to him, "How's your athleticism these days?" he retorted, "Well, let's have a look at you, hot stuff!" And later, he declared: "Saving the world is Bono's job. We just want to save 100 cities." (It's too bad that Alex didn't bring his drumset to punctuate Roth's quips.)

There is a slight catch to this we're-baaaaack announcement: Michael Anthony, the band's amiable bassist (and one of rock's best backing vocalists), was not invited to the party. (Long, convoluted story, but it has something to do with his friendship/touring schedule with former VH frontman Sammy Hagar.) Anthony's duties will be assumed by a 16-year-old kid who goes by the name of Wolfgang Van Halen, as in Eddie's son. Don't worry, the other VH members assure us that his cradle rocks. And as Dave clarified: "This is not a reunion — this is a new band. This is a revision with hits that you're so familiar with — it's as familiar as the roof of your own mouth is to you — but the ambition has nothing to do with old history. Usually when a band comes back like us, it's rockers with walkers, and this is everything but. Meet us in the future, not the pasture." (For the record, the future may include a new album, and the pasture is filled with multiplatinum records and aborted reunion attempts.)

In case you were wondering, the freshly sober Eddie looked good, and while he didn't spend a lot of time on the mic, he did rave about the new-union: "It is totally blowing our own minds... It's better than it's ever been." The guitar deity went so far as to refer to DLR as his "new brother." (A new brother that he might kick in the groin by the fourth show? Oh, time — please do tell.) But leave it to Dave to throw down this challenge to us: "The bar is set unbelievably high. We know what your expectations are. Are you prepared for it to be better than it ever f---ing was?"

You heard the man. Are you?

Eddie may have taken a page from Ace's book early on, but he more than eclipsed the spacey one with his virtuosity. Ace Frehley can't shine Eddie's shoes...

Jill,

Excellent -- made me laugh out loud at work!

Stephanie T. Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

I once heard a rumor that Ace Frehely used to get pissed off that Eddie Van Halen copied his guitar style.

It would be fun to see the whole band including Wolfie. And it would be funnier to see David Lee Roth scissor kick, hear a crack and Roth yelling "Oi my back"

It does lool like Carson. Do you here the ticking in the background? This can't last. There was a shot at a reunion several years ago until DLR opened his mouth and started annoying people almost immediately. It is good news that Eddie is well enough to tour again. And Wolfie will be very popular with the 40 year old cougars because now he can get them a discount on Jennie Craig.

Diamond Dave's bravado is embarrassing.

Laurie Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

Sad. My brother has a VH tattoo and actually named my nephew after Michael Anthony. He will be very disappointed that MA is not with them anymore.

IT's about time! I went to a VH concert in the 80's when I was a foolish teenager! I got drunk in the parking lot, very drunk...sorry..very very drunk and passed out beofre VH took the sstage. I woke up in time for thier encore....i have been waiting over 20 years to actually see them again! So, it's about time.

Winona Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 08:12 AM EST

I was thinking that in some pictures EVH looks like Vern Yip. Regardless, while on paper I am STOKED for this... I will not buy tickets, because I know that I'll just have to deal with trying to get a refund from Ticketmonster once the tour's canceled. Which y'all know it will be. This will *not* go off without a hitch.

yyeeeeaaahh!!! this sounds totally awesome!!!

Tommy G. Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 07:53 AM EST

I think it's great - the Rockin' With Geezers Tour 2007 is on!!! This is the one tour that I've always wanted to see (but haven't yet). Unfortunately their announced tour dates aren't coming anywhere near here, but maybe if they can keep from killing each other, they'll announce a second leg.

Joe C Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

Speaking as an 80's fan,I am pumped about this. I've been waiting for over 20 years. So far, the tour is not scheduled to come to my town, but this is cool. This is the classic Van Halen lineup.

wintersux Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 05:20 AM EST

One wonders if Wolfie will be encouraged to cavort with the groupies with his dad looking on. Especially since the groupies will mostly be in their 40's and 50's.

darrin Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 01:41 AM EST

van halen has been on self destruct mode for some time now - the tour will be interesting - the new album won't happen and no one will care

Shamrock Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:57 PM EST

Why all the hate? Give them a chance. Van Halen is one of the greatest bands ever. They represent how rock n' roll should be. Fun. Tired of bands with a political message. Let's just rock!

Dave Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 11:07 PM EST

Holy crap, he DOES look like Carson! WTF? I'm already looking forward to the next edition of Behind the Music featuring the second fall-out between DLR and Eddie and the band's subsequent takeover by Wolfgang.

Dio_K Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 08:04 PM EST

I'm betting a fiver that they won't make it past Boston at the end of October.

Jill Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 07:47 PM EST

David Lee Roth looks exactly like Carson Kressley from Queer Eye in that picture!

jordan Mon, Aug 13, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

I was in high school when DLR was in. I was in college when SH was in. With the exception of "Jump", I prefer the Hagar songs. I liked Roth's craziness in 1984 when I was 17 but now it'd probably be too much.
