Snap judgment: Annie Lennox's "Dark Road" video

Lennox_l Need a break from d-i-v-a-s who spell out the words to their songs? Annie Lennox's new video for "Dark Road" is streaming at Amazon.com, and it finds the former Eurythmics frontwoman in typically glorious voice. As lead singles go, this one is surprisingly understated — at least till Lennox unleashes the full force of her instrument on the soaring bridge. And while there's no moment of "These are the years that we have spent/ And this is what they represent" intensity, there's something refreshing about an artist who's willing to step back into the spotlight armed with only her voice, a piano, and a lilting little melody. Indeed, "Dark Road" keeps getting better with each repeat spin.

The video, on the other hand, looks like a strange patchwork quilt from three separate directors. There's Lennox, looking amazing in a black slip dress, perched at the edge of a fluffy white bed, the kind Gwen Stefani likes to lazily roll around in every fourth video. Then there's cape-clad Lennox, hanging out at a bus stop and emoting in the back of a cab. Has she come to open the VMAs, and save us all from a live Britney Spears "vocal"? (Unlikely, but it's a good idea, no?) Finally, we get split-screen shots of the American flag alongside black and white images of everyday people. Yes, patriotic folk, you too will enjoy your copy of Songs of Mass Destruction (due October 2)! Let me hear you say, "This clip is disjointed, d-i-s-joy-n-tee-d!"

Anyhow, click here to check out the "Dark Road" video at Amazon, or if you want just the audio, you'll find it embedded…after the jump. Either way, be sure to leave your own snap judgment in the comments section below.

Love her. Love the song. Can't wait for the album. Annie rocks. "Dark Road" does indeed grow on you. I liked it the first time I heard it (the haunting melody of the opening) and then fell in love with it by the time it was over. I've been humming it in my head for about a week now. Definitely one of Annie's better songs. I've also heard snippets from the new album, and she's definitely trying for a more live, harder edge to her music. Love Stephen Lipson and her earlier CDs, but Glen Ballard has helped to shape a new Annie after all these years. It's an impressive feat. She's been at this for a while now, and she's still here making relevant, memorable music. Annie gets a gold star.

She is my eternal diva - a truly talented one. I would "switch" for her!

For me, songs which force you to draw your own conclusions are the best kind. This woman's gift for crafting music and delivering it is stunning. Thanks Annie.

Annie's video is an amazing artwork. It makes the song into something altogether too lacking today.

Annie sings as if she is "America" and this is America's cry against the backdrop of all that the Republicans and Democrats have done to her.

Annie sums up exactly how i feel about the world right now. But she says it all with a hint of hope - breathtaking, thankyou Annie :)

You're right, the song gets better every listen. I like the video, too. It seems simple and complex at the same time, and very different from her previous work (excepting for her amazing acting, which is always evident in her videos). With her work (songs and videos), you know every piece is purposeful. The fun for me is not only to try to figure it out (i.e., what do those "Dark Road" lyrics really mean) but process how much she captures fundamental human emotions in all of their intensity. Bravo, Annie Lennox.

Oh, how I love her - she's like a fine red wine. I can't wait for the full album. Go Annie!

The woman could sing the phone book and it would be better than 95% of the female vocalists in the world today as far as I'm concerned. This is a good song but I'll want to hear a little more from the CD before investing in it. "Bare" had some excellent tunes but also had some filler that was not quite up to her standards.

this is annie at her best, an absolutely stunningly understated vocal performance, till that bridge comes in and knocks you off your feet, the video has a look and feel of american pie by maddonna , which is not a bad thing... i've heard a few snippets of other tracks and i think that this is one oh her strongest albums to date

Think of it as "Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)" + "The King & Queen of America" + "I Saved The World Today" videos. In my opinion the political content --not patriotic at all, quite otherwise indeed-- is a little forced, emphasizing Annie's role as an activist (which she isn't in the first place). The helpless superheroine --there's no superhero to save us all-- rocks, though.

The video was well done! So emotional and brilliant. It complements the song beautifully. Absolutely love it.

Love the song. I like the video -- a testament to the power of a look. Her eyes blaze, and really ignite the lyrics. Reminds me of early MTV, a conglomeration of unrelated images, only with better production value...

It's a thought well video, not easy to get it all at the first view.

For more about the album, the limited edition, the video, the single, the dvd and else check out the brand new Annie Lennox website http://www.Songs-Of-Mass-Destruction.com

Annie Lennox no longer has anything to prove YET, she still puts herself out there and the results...STUNNING! "Dark Road" is deceptively simple until that killer bridge kicks-in and the listener quickly realizes both song & singer are delivering THE goods! WOW!

Ernesto Thu, Aug 23, 2007 at 06:12 AM EST

I am living in London for a few weeks and they showed this video on channel 4 as an exclusive and WOW, Annie Lennox has done it again, what an amazing song this is,there's a portion where she explained every detail of the video and I just have to say she is a really smart woman...I love the contrast of homeless people against the flag...beautiful work, MTV isn't smart enough to give her a slot to perform...maybe the NARAS people will give her the place she deserves!!!!!

(Yeesh - sorry about the typos - I wish this thing would let you go back and fix a typo. This is what happens when I try to post while at work!)

I LOVE Annie Lennox. Always have (Eurythmics was one of my favorites0 - I think she is an amazing, strong, gorgeous, talented woman. But I do wish she would make another album like DIVA (one of the best algums ever - brilliant from top to bottom). Or more pop like "Sweet Dreams". We need more good catchy fun pop music (I still listen to Erasure, ABC, Depeche Mode). Please - nothing with RAP, HIP-HOP, heavy base - Ugh.

mike Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

I miss the old days of Sweet Dreams, Missionary Man and Would I Lie To You. I know she's older. Does that mean she can't sing rock? She's following Sting down the VH1 road. Come Back, Annie.

Alex Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

Medusa is one of the best cover albums ever.

fredric Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 01:27 PM EST

It's a good song, but I do wonder what exactly it's about, especially now that I've seen the video complete with Americana. (It kind of makes me second guess my earlier interpretations of bad relationship or depression... "Depression hurts - who does it hurt? Everyone. Especially Annie." Damn that girl knows some pain.)

Chris Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

Incredible song, great driving chorus at the end.

Sally Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

She looks good.

She is teh awesome. Thanks for posting this.

Lesha Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

I heart her.

Love it! Love her superhero outfit..your average superhero who seems to blend in with everyone else and not stand out so much. The pics of people with the flag were quite moving. They seemed more heroic.
