Who's your favorite singer-songwriter?

Aug 29, 2007, 07:30 AM | by Rick Tetzeli

Categories: Music

Josh_l All right, PopWatchers, who's your favorite singer-songwriter these days? For me, the ring's gotta go to Josh Ritter, who in this week's EW (Jodie Foster's on the cover) gets a well-deserved A- from Leah Greenblatt for his new CD, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter. It's the second amazing album he's delivered in a row — 2006's Animal Years was picked by Stephen King as the record of the year, and it's my favorite disc of the century. Ritter (pictured) can sound downright Dylanesque with some of his imagery ("To the Dogs or Wherever" from Conquests), can deliver pure pop a la Paul Simon ("The Temptation of Adam" from Conquests) and, when he wants to, can ramble like an early Springsteen ("Thin Blue Flame" from Animal Years). And when I saw him the other night (a small gig at the Box, the downtown spot where I once witnessed — at an EW party, no less — the entire cast of Grey's Anatomy perform the Electric Slide) I was reminded of something else he does that's unique these days. Ritter sings with unabashed, intelligent joy — he's as unafraid of celebrating love as he is of chronicling heartbreak. For this listener, Ritter's songs cut through all the Britney-ism that has come to define entertainment, and are a pure reminder of why we love this stuff.

Speak up, PopWatchers — which singer-songwriters cut through the nonsense for you?

Without a doubt Neil Finn and Tim Finn (Crowded House,Split Enz, work together and solo material for both). Absolutely incredible, just can't put in to words how talented these two brothers are.

Maree Sun, Oct 14, 2007 at 04:33 AM EST

Neil Finn! (His songs from Split Enz, Crowded House and his solo works and also what he did with his brother Tim in the Finn Brothers was just the best stuff I have ever heard!)

And the one about how cowboys know women of two different kinds, the real kind and then there's the kind in his mind. And the real kind of women he jes' don't understand, but the mind kind he knows like the palm of his hand.

Kristin Hersh for sure!..in the business for over 20 years and stronger than ever.. Frank Black even with all His Pixies fame is still ridiculousley underappreciated in my opinion...Jarvis Cocker has the most amazing story like way of writing music, early Pulp is a must for anyone who loves dark and sinister...

Larry Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:46 PM EST

Ms. KRISTIN HERSH! Writing, playing and performing quality music since the early 80s.

Matt Hannan Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

Holy carp, people like Kristin Hersh!
I guess I have to agree with that.
Heck, she is STILL producing quality music!
I'd have to tip it to her. She is a great singer/song writer who cuts thru the noise.
'Learn to Sing Like a Star' is a really decent album (as are the bulk of her collection), so I will go with the Kristin Hersh posse on that one. Hell, she's been around WAY longer than The Beatles were together! And 50 Foot Wave is just sick to see live (caught them opening for Pixies).

I'd have to go with J. Mascis - That last Dino Jr record is KICKING!

How about Jack White of White Stripes? He is operating out of another dimension compared to what is typically available today.

That is how I took this poll: TODAY's artists. Otherwise the list would be endless! Umm? D. Boon? Buddy Holly? Beethoven? Where does it end?!?!

So:
***Kristin Hersh, rock momma
***J. Mascis, long haired weirdo who still somehow matters
***Jack White, who continues to push forward thru corporate slime

If you're talking about raw talent, and "Cutting through the nonsense" I have to agree with most of the other posts - Kristin Hersh. No nonsense, pure addictive music and captivating, unique lyrics. This is one person who loves music and it shows. Watch her perform live and you'll be instantly convinced she loves what she does.

Judging by all of the comments here (and in other forums)I'm surprised by the lack of exposure she gets from the mainstream. -

Kristin Hersh, above and beyond anyone else for me.

Always interesting, always varied,
forever challenging,
fun,
cerebrally and viscerally intense...

I love others, for sure, like Stevie Nicks, but when it comes to OUTPUT and INTEGRITY, as well as just plain SKILLZ

no one touches Hersh in my world.

GingerCat Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 09:57 AM EST

Stephen in Sydney, it's ridiculous to call most of the artists mentioned here "flavors of the month." Most of them have been around for a long time. A lot of them have never had much chart success--they're not trendy, they're just good at what they do and inspire a loyal following.
And I like Sinead O'Connor and Suzanne Vega, but for you to call them "definitive" while implying people like Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, and others mentioned here are "flavors of the month" is just ignorant.

stephen in sydney Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

Hello.
Sorry did I miss something.... EW did ask for the best singer/songwriters right???? Not just flavour of the month. So I am thinking that meant solo artists who have some runs on the board, not simply flavour of the month....

I think this is the definitive list (humbly speaking :)

1. Van Morrison ( by a mile)

then in order
2. Neil Young
3. Bob Dylan ( I do not like his voice but recognise his contribution)
4. Stevie Wonder (stopping in 1983)
5. Lloyd Cole
6. Ed Kuepper ( an Aussie legend!!!)
7. Joan Armatrading
8. Suzanne Vega
9.Sinead O' Connor
10. Paul Simon.( not as prolific as the others, but great songs)

Food for thought...

Cheryl Wheeler
Honey Smooth. wizened voice of original heartfelt songs and melodies or fancifully witty melodic commentary on the observations of life. Truly a shining star who highlights the paths she's traveled as she takes you along for the ride. Best enjoyed in person for full flavor of enjoyment!! ;-)

jim Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 07:59 PM EST

The term singer/songwriter likely doesn't exist without Dylan, so start there. Then John Stewart, Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen, Buffett, Dave Alvin, Lennon/McCartney, Robbie Robertson & even ol' Ian Anderson.

Tim McMullen Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

Favorite is an absolute and, therefore impossible, but I'll give you four—all brilliant: Jesse Winchester, Cheryl Wheeler, Marc Cohn, and Danny O'Keefe—anyone of whom can write the pants off a statue!

Currently no one tops Damien Rice and Patty Griffin. "Underrated" award for Josh Rouse and Richard Thompson, and the "Lifetime Achievement" to the genius trio of Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan.

As for color.... How about Prince? The last 15 years or so have been spotty, but from 1980-88 the man had amazing music FALLING out of him. Someone mentioned Alicia Keys earlier... Heck, one of her BEST songs is a cover of a Prince outtake! Even his "rejects" put most songwriters to shame.

Angie Aparo - who wrote "Cry" for Faith Hill. His voice is so beautiful it'll bring you to tears - if his poetic lyrics don't.

Scott Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

The best singer/songwriter is Kristin Hersh, its terrible how criminally underrated she is. Her worst song is 100 times better than most singer's best song. Plus she has proved herself to be adept at several different styles of music and makes each ine her own. If you're looking excellent music check out anything by Kristin or her bands Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave. You won't be sorry you did.

Sheryl Wheeler is number one in my book, she is amazing.

Amy Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

If you like singer/ songwriters, you should check out Performing Songwriter magazine. Best interviews and stories of all the music mags. (Can you say this on the Entertainment Weekly blog?)
Oh, and Johnny Cash should be at the top of this list.

David Layne Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

I can't believe no one has mentioned STEVE EARLE!One of the greatest songwriters alive.I also find it odd no one has mentioned the masterful John Prine, who's written some of the most incredible songs of the last 50 years(Hello in There,Sam Stone,Angel from Montgomery,to name a few),or the late great Townes Van Zandt.James McMurtry is also a genius.

Amy Kurland Thu, Aug 30, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

One person I see missing is Ron Sexsmith. He releases consistently good music but he still has yet to breach the mainstream.

It's easy to say Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan or Elvis Costello. Those would all be excellent choices.

For a bit out of the mainstream - and it's nobody's loss but yours if you don't listen to 'em - I'd go with Aimee Mann and Paul Westerberg. Stellar artists.

But for me, my personal all-time fave who has never, not in thirty years of recording, made a single BAD record (they range from simply "good" to "phenomenal")? Well, that'd be my main man Tom Petty. Long may he give the world the gift of his insight, emotion, wit, and honesty.

I really think its time EW jumps on the Sara Bareilles train. Her lyrics are always thought provoking and beautiful, be it comparing love to an over-powering gravitational pull in Gravity, to turning fairy tales into female independence in Fairytale, and the ironically named anti-love song Love Song. And when she starts to sing it always full of soul, passion, and emotion, yet never forced or strained. She truly is the real deal!

So far, no one has mentioned Bob Dylan himself, nor has anyone mentioned Leonard Cohen. They're both brilliant songwriters, but I left them off my list because as singers--well, they're brilliant songwriters.

Rebecca Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

I think Rufus Wainwright is one of the most brilliant singer/songwriters i've ever heard. His music is so beautiful I have often been moved to tears by it.

Todd Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

I'll definitely join in the chorus of folks touting Aimee Mann. "Wise Up" is still one of the most heartwrenching songs and Paul Thomas Anderson is a genius for using it the way he did in "Magnolia."

As for my other two choices, you can never go wrong with Ani DiFranco. Love her to death. And my latest obsession is Glen Hansard of The Frames, although at the moment, its still the stuff he and Marketa Irglova did on the "Once" soundtrack that's on permanent repeat in my car.

As most regular Popwatch posters know, I absolutely love Jason Mraz & Ray LaMontagne and eagerly await new material from both.

For all the folks who are mentioning both Alicia Keys & Jill Scott, be happy knowing both artists have brand new discs dropping in the next 2 months, with Jill's newest single, "HATE ON ME" & album sampler available on iTunes as of yesterday, for a whole .99!!! And while you're picking that up at the iTunes store, I HIGHLY recommend this brand new artist, who shares MANY similarities with Alicia Keys, EMILY KING! Itunes has her debut, EAST SIDE STORY, that dropped yesterday, for a measely $6.99 & ITS AWESOME. Emily also hails from NYC, is bi-racial & even shares the same record label as Alicia, and her music is equally impressive AND beautiful. If Alicia tours behind her new Fall disc, AS I AM, Emily would make a lovely touring partner. She has an amazing talent & I hope some of you will go check her out! Even her rendition of "Ain't No Sunshine" is stunning

Erin Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 11:35 AM EST

Oh, lyrics are so important to me. I'm glad that Neko made an appearance on this list; the woman sings like a cross between an angel and a banshee, and I'm afraid her prodigious lyrical talents are lost amid those awesome vocals. She is AWESOME.

His music doesn't have that singer-songwritery vibe, but David Berman (Silver Jews) has written some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. M. Ward, Stephen Malkmus and Ben Folds are my other top picks.

For 'Mainstream' rockers, how about Bob Seger, Tom Petty, and Jackson Browne? Everyone mentions Bruce, but these three are just as good.

In terms of R&B, no one mentions Stevie Wonder, but this guy is an amazing songwriter, too. Check out 'Living for the City.'

And in terms of overlooked songwriters, how about Maria McKee? This amazing talent should have made it big in the 80's, but she didn't. Check out her retrospective CD one day.

When I hear singer-songwriter, I think of a troubadour, scruffy, eking out a living from live shows and on-the-spot CD sales, with a MySpace page he or she actually looks at and possibly reads. Interesting that is EXACTLY the image projected by Patrick Park, and it MIGHT be his reality as well, but in either case, I love his stuff. http://www.myspace.com/patrickpark

ROBBIE WILLIAMS. And I'm not from Europe. I really don't know why he hasn't cracked America yet. His voice and his lyrics are just brilliant. He writes all his songs.

Patty Griffin, John Hiatt, Rosanne Cash, Danny O'Keefe, Teddy Thompson, Dolly Parton, Lyle Lovett, Chris Whitley and Warren Zevon (R.I.P. to both).

Tom Brazelton Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 09:31 AM EST

Elliott Smith is by far my favorite singer-songwriter. But Ben Folds and Rufus Wainright are powerhouses in their own respect.

Scott Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

Michael McDermott is the greatest song-writer of my generation. And his new CD, Noise From Words, is this year's best so far.

Tamara Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

Another vote for Patty Griffin. Every album has six or eight songs that blow my mind. Emmylou Harris said this about her (in Paste magazine): "Patty Griffin says the thing we'’re all saying about love and death and longing, but she says it in a completely new way. She opens up whole new wounds— in the best possible way.”"

I think alot of people forget the genius of Babyface or the longevity of Bill Withers

shana Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

I too love Rufus, Sufjan, Patty Griffin, Josh Rouse, Sarah McLachlan, Damien Rice, but what about Imogen Heap and Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst)? They are both pretty amazing and their lyrics touch me.

Ceballos Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

No offense to all the brilliant singer/songwriters mentioned (especiall Rufus Wainwright, but I'm gonna go ahead and throw out a name who's not in that necessarily "super sensitive singer songwritery with their guitars" mold.

How about Alicia Keys? Though she hasn't had anything in a while, she's a huge star, a talented writer and composer and, oh yeah, a phenomenal singer. Just thought I'd add a little bit of color to this list.

Sports Chick Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 09:09 AM EST

For me it will always be Bruce Springsteen. No one comes close.

No one these days brings more intelligence and creativity to their music than Rufus Wainwright and Tori Amos. A man recreating a Judy Garland concert? And possibly improving on the original? An album "written and performed by" five different Toris, each representing a different part of the female psyche? And it (mostly) isn't a pretentious, long-winded bore? Why not? These two could make anything enjoyable.

Honorable mention: Fiona Apple and Regina Spektor, who, when they let all their quirks drop, make some of the best pop music of this century.

without a question, ben folds is on that list, right at the top. i'd also give big props to feist - her voice is hauntingly great. i'm also the last person who's still a big fan of jewel. i get the jokes - the teeth, the poetry, etc - but her albums are still consistently smart.

There are quite a few excellent ones mentioned so far - I'd like to add these in:
Liz Phair (before she tried to make money)
Ben Folds
Cat Power
Jon Brion (when he's not busy producing other people's stuff - his is amazing)
Michael Penn
Pete Yorn
And, if twins count, Tegan & Sara.

I like all the choices. The trend I'm noticing is that to be a good singer/songwriter, the odds are in your favor if your first name begins with J

Katie V. Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 08:43 AM EST

Ben Folds, with Beck and Rufus Wainwright a close second and third.

GingerCat Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 08:39 AM EST

Patty Griffin is definitely #1 for me. I also love Matt Nathanson. Josh Kelley, Josh Rouse, and Josh Ritter are all good too. And I do love Jason Mraz--his early live stuff in particular is incredible.

Adding to the Rufus Wainwright love. There's just nobody like him.

For me, it will always be Tom Waits. Admitedly, not a great singer, but, ah, what a performer! He has no equal.

Jill Wed, Aug 29, 2007 at 08:08 AM EST

Patty Griffin is definitely my favorite and the best! I also agree that Lori McKenna is great, and would add Bruce Robison to the list.

M. Ward (I'm guessing on how you say it. I think it's Mmmm Ward. Like Mmmm... cookies.)
And as long as they keep releasing posthumous Nick Drake and Elliot Smith albums, I'll keep buying them.
