TV salaries: Who deserves the dough?

Jul 25, 2007, 09:12 PM | by Joshua Rich

Categories: Oprah Winfrey, Television

Oprah_l News flash! According to a TV Guide report on celebrity salaries, Oprah Winfrey is the highest paid personality on television! Big surprise there! Yes, the one-woman cultural institution is said to bank a whopping $260 million per year, far outpacing the rest of the crop.

But while anybody could have guessed that, take a gander at the rest of the top five: Simon Cowell ($45 mil per year), Judge Judy ($30 mil), Katie Couric ($15 mil), and ... wait for it ... Zach Braff ($6.3 mil). Seriously. I think. I mean, I'm willing to bet that that's a typo, because the story goes on to say that CSI's William Petersen makes $500,000 per episode and House's Hugh Laurie brings in 300K per, which make sense — and would rank them higher than the Scrubs star. STILL. I ask you, PopWatchers: Are these people worth it? Does Maury Povich warrant a $7 mil annual paycheck (especially since I'm-not-sure-who watches his show anymore)? What about Grey's Anatomy's Ellen Pompeo's $200,000 per-ep fee? Lemme know what you think — and how's about we not all pile on Ms. Couric at once, eh?

if you don't want actors/actresses to get paid as much as they do, then stop buying their movies, or watching tv period!!! We are the ones to blame

Judge Judy makes 80million!!..a year??..Holy Moly...how come?...Why?...and what on earth would anyone, anywhere need that much money for?..and I like Judge Judy...still can't figure that out though.

ericalina Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:20 PM EST

no one on grey's anatomy is worth two shiny nickels.

PERRY Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:10 PM EST

IM HOMELESS IWISH THEY WOULD BLESS ME WITH SOME OF THAT MONEY 803 463-5104

t3hdow Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

To Marc:

Judge Judy may make far more money compared to other judges but it's an overpaid profession as it is. However, that doesn't bother as much as the amount of power they possess in court. Yeah, plenty of them are legit, but some judges are way too biased for or against the defendent. Tell me why a teenage white girl in Georgia commits arson and only gets two months probation, yet a teenage black girl in the same state accidently shoves into a school security guard in the shoulder and gets three years. I can't begin to count the unfair charges I've heard on the news, so I'm not going to go crazy over some fake judge making more money than a real one.

Adrian Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

Ok, I have to say, I am sick and tired of people complaining about how much actors make!! Maybe people don't understand, the money is being made, no matter what! Clearly, if the studio or network wouldn't make enough money to cover these salaries, they would not pay them. So would you rather that the actors, without whom the show may not be as successful, get paid a lot of money, or have the money go to some unseen studio/network head (who, like many actors, have more than enough as well)??

Dio_K Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

Very few people are "worth" that kind of money. (Okay, okay, mom, everyone is priceless, I know--but still.) Actors and TV hosts aren't exactly curing cancer. But I'd take it. I can't blame them for taking it either. (It's hard to get beyond that fact that our society rewards actors and "captains of industry" so amazingly. But that's part of the deal in a capitalistic society.)

GeeMoney Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

I really don't care who makes what. I just want one of those rich bastards to give me some of their loot. Especially Oprah. She's got money to spare! No one really needs $260 mil!

Anna Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

Well at least it's not like back in the day, when all the friends and Seinfeld stars were making 1 million/episode. THAT was craziness.

Zoe Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:20 AM EST

I don't understand why Eva Longoria is the highest paid actress on "Desperate Housewives"

matt Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:51 AM EST

scrubs is not being canceled it is ending and zach braff is worth it. The show is hilarious and if you actually watched it from the start you would know that. maybe then you wouldn't throw out filthy comments about scrubs or ZB. you just got served paige.

paige Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

thats why scrubs is getting cancelled next season- zach braff is too expensive for a show thats not even a hit! thank god its on syndication!

ronaldo Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:20 AM EST

JoeC is right; it doesn't matter whether you think they are worth it. It's what the market will bear. No different than athletes salaries. I personally think the garbageman who picks up my garbage is worth more than the people on this list; hard to go more than a week without him.

me Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:01 AM EST

i cannot believe that "jidge" judy gets 2x the pay of Couric. reality bites.

Hamburger Royal Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:53 AM EST

Why shouldn't they be worth it? The people on the list only rake in what we give them through the Nielsen ratings. Only thing making me sad is thinking about how many episodes of Firefly or Vernica Mars could have been self-financed by Joss Whedon/Rob Thomas if they had Oprah's annual income. But I am sure the beneficiaries of Oprah's extensive donations would strongly disagree...

Auriana Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:28 AM EST

Hugh Laurie is definately worth it.

Joe C Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:50 AM EST

As far as whether or not they are 'worth it', hey, this is a capitalistic society. If some corporation is willing to pay them the salary, then they are worth it. Don't hate, fellow bloggers.....

Joe C Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:47 AM EST

Sorry, Joshua, but the one who clearly doesn't 'deserve' the salary is Katie. I could anchor that broadcast and come in last all of the time the way she does, lol.

Marc Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

I find it really really sad that a real judge makes less money and does a more important job than Judge Judy.

GT Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:16 AM EST

I think the difference between people like Judge Judy or Maury and someone like the cast of Grey's anatomy, is the fact that Maury is on 5 times a week, so for his 7 million you get a lot more episodes than the 4.4 million Pompeo would make.

CW Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:55 PM EST

Kiefer Sutherland deserves every penny of his 3-year, $40 million contract he signed in April of 2006...despite how bad Day 6 was.

Stef Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:55 PM EST

I am surprised that Rachael Ray is not on this list. I wonder how much she makes? She seems to be everywhere these days. Maybe her talk show is too new?

Mary Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:52 PM EST

Maybe they are taking Zach Braff's film career into account or something, because that seems very high. Scrubs is not even a hit show. Not that it's not good but it is surprising that he makes so much. Also Judge Judy, $30 million, holy cow! I love her show and I had no idea she made that much, good for her.

Richard Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:36 PM EST

Is Oprah really this thin these days? I gotta admit I can't keep up with the ups and downs of her weight anymore. Back to the topic...these people are paid what someone is willing to pay them. There's nothing wrong with free market capitalism, IMHO.

Stephen to Chris Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:27 PM EST

Ok, then why don't you walk up to strangers on the street and brag about your yearly salary. We all have a career because it should be about doing what we love, not the $$$. And I don't watch half of the actors' shows mentioned, it's just I should be able to flip through a magazine w/o feeling like crap.

Chris Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:04 PM EST

The thing about over-inflated celebrity salaries is that they wouldn't be making so much if ordinary people weren't watching their programs. So, if you want to complain, just stop watching TV. Yeah, I didn't think so...

Stephen Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:49 PM EST

I'm so sick and tired of these f***ing lists of the rchest stars!!! Holy s***, that is more than the majority of Americans make in one year, and they have the nerve to say they're just regular people. None of them deserve that much.
