Trailer Blazer: 'The Darjeeling Limited'

Check out the trailer for Wes Anderson's upcoming film The Darjeeling Limited, which stars Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and a possibly post-op (nose-jobbed?) Owen Wilson as brothers who hope to reconnect by taking a train trip across India. I can't shake the feeling that without the face brace, Owen Wilson would seem really out of place in this trailer. Anyway, the movie looks really good. I have a feeling "I love you too, but I'm gonna Mace you in the face!" will be the About-To-Hang-Up-The-Phone Catchphrase of Autumn. This is a tough catchphrase category to crack. Let's make it happen.

!spoiler alert!

owens character was in a motorcycle crash (hence the face), jasons is a womanizing new father (who will try to bed the beautiful indian attendent hanging out the window smoking), and adrien plays the guy that just divorced his wife. the "flood" is a rescue mission (the little boy dies), the villagers thank them and invite the trio to take part in the funeral. and lastly, the shadowy figure at the end of the preview is angelica huston, the boys mother who ran away to become a nun.

!this concludes the spoiler!
not so spoiler however, the 2 kinks songs that appear in the trailer are "strangers" and "this time tomorrow" both from the album "lola versus powerman and the moneygoround."

I'm so excited! This film looks fantastic. Wes Anderson is a brilliant!

I get the shlock feeling too - Owen Wilson is already gusing about the "meaning" and "reason" of things and then they're saving a village from a flood? everyone waves goodbye? And what's with the "featuring music from the movies of Satyajit Ray and Merchant Ivory"? A little pretentious for sure. Merchant Ivory were two people, you could use a hyphen or better grammar - unless you're going for what would sound familar to people.
I don't know - I've got a bad feeling.
Contextualizing Disclaimer: I'm a big fan of Rushmore, and Bottle Rocket too, I suppose.

hip, ironic, deadpan Wes Anderson movie. i'm not even cool enough to watch it.

Jen Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:19 PM EST

Ditto, Red. The Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite movie of all time and while I wasn't a huge fan of The Life Aquatic, I still adore Wes Anderson. I cannot WAIT to see how this turns out. (I do hope Luke Wilson turns up at some point in this film - I think he's done most of his best work in front of Anderson's camera.)

Red Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

I. Cannot. Wait.

Wan't this posted twice yesterday then yanked?

EM Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

love the trailer. Can someone tell me where to find this Kinks song?

jean Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 01:48 PM EST

I love Wes Anderson's films if only for their beautiful cinematography. The Royal Tennebaums, though not my favorite film, was beautifully designed and shot- same with The Life Aquatic. This looks like no exception.

RE: could they not have darkened Owen's hair
He was playing their next door neighbor. And ironically, despite his hair color, he is Luke Wilson's brother.

mike Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 11:39 AM EST

I'll add to the chorus. Rushmore was great, but the only thing that saved the Royal Tennenbaums was Gene Hackman. Hopefully, this will be a return. The trailer looks like every other Wes Anderson film, though.

Alea Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

Definitely excited. Wes Anderson rocks my world be it the great lines, actors, color use, set, detail. Love it! Can't wait to see everyone else that's rumored to be in it.

Eric Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

I agree with GOB, Rushmore was great, everything since that was awful.
I think the Royal Tennenbaums was one of the most over rated films of the last 10 years.

amd could they not have darkened Owen's hair just a touch to make it plausible that he's the brother of the other two?

Henning Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:48 AM EST

Please return to Rushmore levels with this one, Wes. I'm with GOB - The Life Aquatic was pretentious and far too precious for its own good. Honestly, I think Bill Murray's absence may do wonders for Wes Anderson's artistic growth.

Tim Lade Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

I saw this trailer last night on the Quicktime website and even before I saw who the director was I knew it was a Wes Anderson movie. That man totally puts the Aut in Auteur.

GOB Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:37 AM EST

I know he has a die-hard core fan base, but personally, other than Rushmore, I have hated all of Wes Anderson's movies. The Life Aquatic was pretentious and stupid to the point of being unwatchable. His American Express commercial was great, but I have very low expectations for The Darjeeling Limited.

furry_tom Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:34 AM EST

I'm always down for a new Wes Anderson movie. Excellent use of The Kinks in the trailer too.

tiff Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:33 AM EST

I adore Jason Scwartzmann. This looks GOOD.

Royal Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:31 AM EST

Do not fret, young Horatio. Wes Anderson may explore interpersonal relationships, but it would never be confused with schlock. I love his movies and look forward to this one.

Horatio Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:00 AM EST

Looks very promising, although there appears to be some sentimental schlock which concerns me.
