The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 25)

Jul 26, 2007, 01:28 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Music, PopWatch Confessional

What have you spent way too much time thinking about recently? Here's why I'm asking: For the last 48 hours, I've been talking about Taylor Hanson's triceps.

In truth, I first found them noteworthy a few months ago, when I stumbled onto this performance clip of Hanson from 2003. But it wasn't until Tuesday, when I sat down with the band in-person to chat about their new album The Walk (out now) that I felt myself allot actual brain space to the muscles' lasting image. I blame the fact that Taylor sat across from me, mindlessly playing with his right shirt sleeve and raising it to expose them. But perhaps it also didn't help that at last night's show at NYC's Webster Hall, he wore a long-sleeved shirt that clung to them. (Even my plus-one Ian was forced to turn to me during the opening song and reluctantly acknowledge their greatness.)

Will my fleeting infatuation with Taylor's upper body cloud the pieces you'll be reading about the trio in EW and on EW.com in the coming weeks? No. Would I recommend Hanson's new album, to which EW's Leah Greenblatt gives a B+ in the current issue of the magazine, even if the release hadn't given me a chance to ogle his guns at close range? Yes. Don't believe me: Check out their performance of the track "Great Divide" on Tuesday's The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet below. (Nice arm shots around 2:25. What? I'm just sayin'.) Then make me feel better by sharing what random thoughts — or celeb body parts (keep it clean!) — have had you transfixed.

OK, the SYTYCD thing and Peter Krause's smile...I've been watching old episodes of "Sports Night" and every time he smiles flirtily at Felicity Huffman, I melt a little.

Martha Sat, Jul 28, 2007 at 05:30 PM EST

I have to admit that I spend way too much time thinking about "So You Think You Can Dance." I woke up Thursday morning wondering which two they were going to cut and why! For someone who pretends to be above all this reality TV hoopla, I've gotten myself in pretty deep... ;-)

Sarah to Broadway Baby Sat, Jul 28, 2007 at 08:32 AM EST

Well it's a good thing for you, then, that Johnny Depp HASN'T made "any unintelligible three hour movie(s)" in his career, eyeliner or not.

I heart Ron Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 07:29 PM EST

David Beckham's smile...that smile makes me melt everytime I see it

Silv Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

The Grey's Anatomy scene where Derek goes to tell Addison they're over and Mark Sloane comes out of the shower still wrapping the towel over his waist? (Drool, drool) I watched that sequence over & over on youtube. Also (I'm dating myself here) Michael Keaton's lips in the 1st Batman movie - just that movie, I don't otherwise find him attractive; Sam Elliott's voice; George Clooney's anything; Kiefer Sutherland's hair/beard in "The Three Musketeers"; the newly mature-looking Chris O'Donnell in last season's Grey's.

kats Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

Sarah ~ This could keep me occupied for the rest of the day...

Jeri Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

In the movie "A Walk Among The Clouds" with Keanu, there's a scene near the end where, after a fire in a vineyard, when everyone thinks things are hopeless, Keanu's character goes to a place where the first vine planting has been growing for years. He grabs this plant and starts hauling it out of the ground by main force. OMG! Those arms! After much delightful grunting and straining of those arms, he finally freed it. I won't tell you what happened to me except that there was a cigarette involved. For it's time, this movie was a minor hit and I think this scene caused it all by itself.

nay-lo Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

I second Keanu Reeves arm when he's trapped under the bus in Speed. As a teenage girl, I would watch that seen over and over and over. Hmmmmm....

Broadway Baby Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

I would sit through any unintelligible three hour movie ten times over for an eyelined Johnny Depp soaked in rum...

Crystal Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

Jensen Ackles's eyes and lips. Turn me to goo.

kats Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

Sarah~ Thanks for the link! Nice to see that he is getting good reviews. I don't understand why some people seem to think he can't act. Is it because he's just too beautifu? Can't wait 'til he comes here and we can review for ourselves. Although with him actually on stage in front of me I might not notice his acting as much as I ought to.

Sarah Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

kats: Orlando MUST come to Broadway so we can adore him in person! He received favorable reviews for his performance:

Sarah~ Oooooohhhh! Thank you! Now I can spend the rest of my day thinking about (and occasionally staring at) the pictures on the top row. That is one gorgeous man there! Bring Orlando to Broadway ~ please!

Jess Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 08:44 AM EST

Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale in The Prestige. That scene where Hugh is shirtless.... my heart is still fluttering!

K Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 07:59 AM EST

Like Catherine, I pretty much only watch Prison Break anymore to stare at Wentworth Miller. Dear Lord, those eyes could make me do his bidding at the drop of a hat and I wouldn't think twice.

Also, like the other K, I watch Newsies for Christian Bale (and the awesome songs). That part at the end when Jack kisses Sarah has been rewound on my VHS copy so many times, I'm surprised the function still works.

Cliff Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 07:29 AM EST

I'm obsessed with Winona Ryder in Vogue. It's been so long since we've seen her anywhere, and she looks so good and poised and trouble-free. Every time I pass a newsstand, I pick it up. Before the month is over, I'm pretty sure you'll see me at the check-out, making up some excuse about my sister asking me to pick it up (I don't have a sister).

Sarah Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 07:22 AM EST

kats: Check out these photos from In Celebration ;)

kats: If you haven't seen Haven yet (I haven't!) it's going to be on Starz next week (and he'll be doing some swimming in it!!!):
August 1 - Haven, 4:50am & 5pm on Starz
August 10 - Haven, 12:45am & 1:15pm on Starz

Galadriel Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 07:15 AM EST

Speaking of kisses, how about Orlando and Kiera at the end of the first Pirates movie? Yummy!

Nix Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 04:17 AM EST

I dunno, Taylor (that's lead singer/pianist, right?) looks kinda like Jon Bon Jovi right there. And his voice hasn't changed. The song's not bed, though, and I liked their previous album.

Jeri Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:10 PM EST

My current numbers 1 and 2 in no particular order:
Tom Welling's hands. Big, long-fingered, vein-y hands. When Clark Kent is ripping some female character's clothes off I imagine those big hands doing it to me.
Matt Damon's voice. If he never acts again he definitely has a career in voice-over work.

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:41 PM EST

I Heart Ron ~ Here's a link to the kiss on youtube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=DL26lDx3YK4

BTW, I'm also with you on all things Harry Potter.

Member of Colbert "Lady" Nation Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:39 PM EST

Wonky Ear. You're either an it-getter or your not.

Sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:24 PM EST

Pauline: I agree with you about Christian Bale in Batman. Those shirtless scenes were breathtaking, weren't they? Who's with me on Ewan McGregor's eyes and voice? How about Jonathan Rhys Meyers' lovely physique in The Tudors? Who knew Henry the 8th could be so HOT?!

I heart Ron Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

Kats - I'm right there with you at the Ryan Gosling/Rachel McAdams kiss! I remember watching it and nearly died...oh how I wished I was taping it.

As the BFF of I heart Alan Rickman, everything harry Potter and Alan Rickman. Or in my case, Alan Rickman and Rupert Grint.

Cece Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

An oldie but a goodie: LL Cool J's lips. I turn into a 14-year-old girl everytime he licks his lips.
And, if we're building the perfect man: Idris Elba's eyes. Those eyes see right through me. And when he smiles, they shine a little bit. They're perfect.
Love them!!

Red Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

They are really very talented.

Djimon Hounsou's lips are pretty phenominal.

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 06:06 PM EST

Sarah~ I'm so with you on the sexy voice thing. It can be a real downfall for me over a guy.

AM Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

Ben Taylor's (James Taylor's & Carly Simon's kid) arms. They're to die for. I'm drooling just thinking about them.

Pauline Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Catherine, I hear ya on Ryan and Wenty. However, I've always had a thing for a guy's forearm, especially if it shows all his little separate muscles moving when he's got something in his hand-like when Brad Pitt casts a fishing pole in the movie "River Runs Through It" or when Keanu Reeves is pulling himself from up under the bus when he was in "Speed." And since I'm from Chicago, Michael Jordan's arms and legs. And lastly, any body part of Christian Bale's. If I see him here while he's filming the second Batman, my knees might collapse on sight. And this could be weird, but I have a fem-crush on Sandra Bullock-she's got a rockin physique. Great legs.

Brie Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Dylan McDermott's eyes. Actually, it's an old fixation that's been renewed. I used to love The Practice (only partially because of those piercing eyes). When I upgraded my cable, I learned that FX shows The Practice in the morning. And that's reminded me that that man has beautiful eyes. And I'm now contemplating checking out ABC's new fall show "Big Shots" because of Dylan McDermott's eyes.

Galadriel Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

I'm also an Orlando Bloom fan ever since he first said, "And you have my bow" in LOTR Fellowship. In addition to his other previously listed amiable qualities, he has very nice hands. That scene in 'Troy' when he's with Helen in her bedroom is quite freeze-frame and drool worthy!

Sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

kats: I also have a thing for voices. I could listen to Orlando, Johnny and Hugh's voices til the cows come home. If only one of them would read me a bedtime story.....

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST

One more obsession of mine. The kiss between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams when they won the best screen kiss on MTV Movie Awards. I've watched that over and over and over again. Oh to be kissed like that....

Carrie Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

Here's a facial expression obsession . . . In Spiderman 3 James Franco telling the waitress that the pie is "so good." So devilishly delish!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75sHU1SA3jI

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

Sarah~ Knew you'd be on board the Orlando and Johnny train as well ; )

Can't wait to see Orlando on Broadway!!! Theater owners must know the audience that's out there just for him.

Stephanie Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:32 PM EST

OK, so I used to freeze frame Hayden Christensen's face in Life As a House, when he finds his mom and dad kissing. There is one part where it is so completely adorable and sexy all at once. I had to stop after a while though, I think I was getting a little obsessed?

Sarah Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

kats: YOU GO GIRL!!!! Orlando's eyes, arms (in Kingdom of Heaven), smile, hair (in Pirates!), and OOOO the way he swordfights and shoots a bow and arrow (Legolas!). Somebody PLEASE bring Orlando's play to Broadway! I agree about Johnny Depp, his eyes and lips are to DIE for, and those amazing accents he does! In addition to Pirates, 'From Hell' is also one of my favorite Johnny performances. Hugh Jackman's everything is high on my list of yummy things to obsess about as well. Those Wolverine arms are perfection in every sense of the word!

terri Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

I did not even notice Taylor's arms, I was so transfixed at that dirt on his upper lip. Please have someone tell him to shave it off.

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

I can also obsess about Orlando Bloom's anything and eveything for days on end. Johnny Depp in pirate gear as well.

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

A couple recent obsessions (that oddly enough belong to white boys---sorry y'all, that's strange for me)

1) Zac Efron's curl, eyes and cute gaze in "Hairspray". I've been obsessing about this for almost a week.

2) Patrick Wilson's toned and oiled- up body in "Little Children" and "Evening". Little Children was a serious movie, but my friend and I kept making inappropriate moaning sounds in the theater every time his bare body was exposed...which was ALOT!

OH, WAIT!!! A man of color:

Jimmy Jean Louis (The Haitian on HEROES, fine a$$ DR. in Phat Girlz). Not one body part, but all of the body parts, plus the smile, and that sexy accent!!! WHEW, LORD!!!

I'm done...

Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

Alan Rickman's voice. I got this CD of sonnets - his is amazing.

Luke Perry's smile, especially circa 90210's first season.

Amanda Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

Watching this I was thinking that Zac Efron would be lucky to look as good as Taylor Hanson in five years. Which brings me to what I've spent WAY too much time thinking about lately: Zefron and his baby blues.

Liz Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

British actor James McAvoy's smile...

Suz Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

I can't stop thinking about the Simpsons movie. I'm so excited! And I'm such a geek.

K Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

You know in Newsies during that "Seize the Day" dance sequence on the streets when Christian Bale juts his chin up and punches the air. That moment is worn out on my video tape. The man has the jawline of a Greek god, and the best facial expressions of any actor in history. Best. Movie. Ever.

I heart Alan Rickman Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

My BFF and I have spent the last 48 hours talking about all things Harry Potter and Alan Rickman.

Ep Sato Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:48 PM EST

Too easy- Michael Jackson's nose. Ever since the first couple of cuts, I've been obsessed with dude's nose!

I've always thought Angela Bassett had an amazing body and always admired how in shape she always looks. Why wasn't she cast as Storm in the X men movies? She would have rocked in that role (pun not intended, but let's roll with it anyway).

paige Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

you call THAT a tricep?

Elaine Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

Usher's abs.
George Clooney's smile. His eyes just light up.

Dawn Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

Chris Klein's hair. Have had several run-ins with him around town as he is up in Western Mass lending support to his girlfriend while she summer-stocks it up. Didn't give a second look to him or his greasy mop in any of the American Pies but in person? Follicular fabulousness.

Kristi Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

I happened to receive the excellent "Little Children" from Netflix and see "Evening" within a couple weeks of each other. Since then, I have been transfixed by Patrick Wilson's yummy gaze.

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Brad Pitt's smile can enthrall me for hours on end.

Danielle Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

Robbie Williams' eyes.

Joslyn Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:46 PM EST

Perfect timing for this post. Saw the first preview of Grease on Tuesday night and ever since, I find my mind wandering back to Max Crumm in his wee running shorts (when Danny joins the track team). We were sitting in the front row...and he has very nice legs.

Cassie Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

I'm probably not alone, but I've been thinking way too much about Harry Potter which leads me to think way too much about Daniel Radcliffe and my semi-inappropriate crush on him (I scored a 6 on the quiz) and what steps I intend to take to get him to fall in love with me (I am only three years older so it's not too creepy).

Catherine Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

Wentworth Miller's eyes...I don't care what is happening on Prison Break anymore!!
Ryan Reynold's whole body!!

h Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

david beckham! how does he look so good EVERY DAY? luckily there are just that many pictures for me to verify every day.

i enjoyed the hanson video... but EW to taylor's pornostache. ew!

Ceballos Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:38 PM EST

Adrianna Costa's, um...dresses on "On the Lot." It's the only reason to watch that unwatchable show. Seriously it is. I turn it on to see what she's wearing, and then I change the channel. Really.
