Mulder and Scully return: Are you psyched?

Jul 16, 2007, 05:26 PM | by Gregory Kirschling

Categories: Film, Television

X_l Sometime in late 1996 — shortly after I got EW's exhaustive X-Files episode-guide issue in the mail at college — I decided to sit down and actually watch an episode of the show. It didn’t take. The whole ridiculous hour focused on killer cockroaches, and I’m not sure I even made it to the end before I sought out something more exciting to do — like my Biology I homework, or my laundry. I’ve since discovered that the cockroach episode, "War of the Coprophages," is both a B-movie horror spoof (TOTALLY didn’t get that) and an X-Files classic. Maybe someday I’ll go back and watch the DVDs...

In the meantime, I guess I didn’t get too excited to discover that Agent Mulder’s been gabbing this week about making another X-Files movie. (I saw the first one back in summer of 1998, and I only remember thinking: Godzilla was better.) On Saturday, David Duchovny let it slip at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills that he’s supposed to see a script for a new X-Files movie in a week or so. He says he’s on board, Gillian Anderson’s on board, and Chris Carter’s also on board and ready to direct. So. Obvious questions. Who out there (1) is still a fan of The X-Files? And (2) is excited for this?

Tony Smith Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 04:52 AM EST

Yes, I thought it may come to this, I mean that both of them went off and tried working on other films and programmes etc and it hasn't worked out so thier careers began to wane a little so as soon as this idea is put on the table they jump to it in order to revive thier flagging careers. This is how they survive at Hollywood. I guess this is an option available to every actor that when your not in the limelight, make a comeback with a sequel.

Am I to take it you don't like the x files? What silly questions you ask! I loved that show when I was a kid, yes and yes!

xphile14 Sat, Dec 29, 2007 at 02:45 AM EST

I have only two words for you, Mr. Kirschling, in response to both your offensive questions:

I AM.

David Duchovny's Official myspace just found!

I would love to see another "X-Files" sequel. As a devoted fan of the series, I miss new adventures from Mulder and Scully. But if they do decide to make a sequel, they should just pick up in the middle of the sixth season. The last three seasons were very disappointing, with Mulder's exit and Scully's pregnancy. Luckily, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, and Chris Carter all seem to be on board (or so it seems), so maybe this long-anticipated project can get its show on the road. "X-Files" was a great series (for the first six seasons) with an intelligence mix of compelling characters, creepy storylines, and pure entertainment. My fingers are crossed!!!!!!!!

Bo Wisneski Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 11:18 PM EST

Man I never got to see the show when it was on except the occasional episode because I was only 12 when the series ended but to fill the void that has been left by LOST in its exceptionally long hiatus I have been going through the series one season at a time when I have to money to get them I'm just about to start season six. When I heard the news that there was going to be another movie I got really stoked because after I finish season nine it'll give me something to look forward to. WOOOOOOOO

Melora Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

Seasons 1-5 of the X-Files were the absolute best. It was like seeing a mini movie once a week. The movie was subpar and Seasons 6-9 were subpar. Mainstreaming the show, dumbing down the characters as well romanticizing Mulder and Scully destroyed the show.
For me to see another movie, they would have to ignore seasons 6-9 and go back to the high quality that are the classic seasons.

celia Fri, Aug 3, 2007 at 07:18 AM EST

I was a fan of the series. I mean, I am still a fan, and so I am looking forward to this second film. And I thin that a Monster-Of-The-Week kind of movie will be great. Bt let's gace it- they have to make a movie about the conspiracy before 2012 - you know, the end of the world! Chris Carter left a lot to explain...

Faithie Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 04:36 AM EST

I laughed my butt off during that cockroach episode. It was hilarious. And yes, I just bought all nine seasons of the show on DVD, so I'm definitely definitely pumped for the second movie. Hope EW can keep us posted on this. =)

mtank Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:24 AM EST

And, with all due respect as an avid EW reader & PopWatcher, I'm not quite sure why Mr. Kirschling was chosen to blog about this one, what with an obvious dislike for the show and all. & "Godzilla" better than "The X-Files" movie? I've seen documentaries on early Hungarian cabinet-making that were more thrilling than that colossal bore. Worst Summer Movie Of All Time.

mtank Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:16 AM EST

I know that the show, creatively, painted itself into a corner by season 7, at least with the mythology arc. But when "The X-Files" was good, it was GREAT. Rumor has it that the new film will be a "stand-alone" that has nothing to do with alien takeovers & their cancer-ridden government pals, which is a good thing. The 1st film was a real letdown. Hard-core fans (like myself) felt talked down to. There was some rather awkward little "for those who came in late" expositional dialogue here & there, which did nothing to help newcomers, who felt left behind anyway. Let's hope they don't feel they have to win anyone on either side over this round, & just have some good, creepy fun. Call me nostalgic, but I for one would love to see Mulder & Scully back at it.

Bennie Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

I'm still a big X-files fan. I heard a rumor that the new movie will be more like a classic episode, featuring a serial killer or a more earthy mistery. I hope it will be good but please don't bring back Doggett or Reyes back. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

If EW or online blogging existed back in the 1970's the same thing would have been said about "Star Trek". EW was always one of the "X-Files" biggest supporters during the 90's.

"X-Files" is timeless and will be greatness again, especially with the captain, Chris Carter, at the helm. Too bad the Lone Gunmen will miss out. Bring it on!

sarah Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 04:39 PM EST

This is very unnecessary and will probably fizzle out fast just like the 20934832 other bad movie ideas coming soon including (but not limited to) Alvin and the Chipmunks, Thundercats, Bill And Ted without Keanu, Point Break 2...AH when will they stop???

LT Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Of course I'm excited. Of course, I will see the movie, mainly for Gillian Anderson who is a fantastic actress, and who probably deserves better than having to do countless XF junkets where stupid journalists keep asking her the same stupid questions, but also for the chemistry with Duchovny. That article by monsieur Kirschling was so trashy, though, so ewww. EW, try harder next time you post about one of the most important TV series of all times, and pick out someone with a brain, mmkay?

Strangerthanfiction Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

I look forward to another romp with Mully and Sculder.....

ARae Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

1 - I am
2 - Not so much, I'll wait for the DVD

I did go see the movie in theater, and that's saying something considering that I've been to the movies less than 10 times in the last 10 years...

mjryan Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

I came very late to the X-Files. I would watch episodes here and there while in first run, always enjoying the stand alone eps the best because I didn't have to understand the conspiracy. Last year, I started tivoing episodes on TNT and Sci-Fi and have now watched just about every episode. It did lose it's way at the end and the final episode was one of the worst ever, IMO.

I would love to see a movie as long as it had nothing to do with the conspiracy. Let's have a stand alone movie. Let's even be crazier and have it be in the timeline of the original series, before Mulder and Scully got together, if they ever even really did. As much as I wanted them together, it was best when you didn't know for sure and you could read whatever you wanted to into their snappy dialogue.

Brian B Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

x-files (and i don't speak this this as just a true fan of the series) was easily one of the best shows ever written and produced for television - a truly character driven hour that you could look forward to each week. it did slip in its latter seasons a bit, but this news is refreshing and should bring both the old fans back out and probably earn some new ones as well.

Karla Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 11:59 AM EST

Yay, X-Files! I do recommend starting from the pilot if you've only ever seen War of the Corophages (cockroach episode). It would be like tuning into Lost for the first time and seeing the episode about Hurley and the Dharma van. I've just begun rewatching the DVDs (Kathleen, they are actually on sale for $19.99 at Best Buy again right now!) in an attempt to substitute my current, soon-to-end obsession (Harry Potter) with an old favorite. Yes, as Fox (the network) found out, few of us watched Season 7, and pretty much no one watched Seasons 8 and 9, but once they changed the cast and cosmology of the show it didn't really feel like X-Files anymore. The fun was gone, plus the Mulder/Scully dynamic was a huge part of what made it work (whether you were a 'shipper or not). Bring back Duchovny, Anderson, and Carter, especially in a storyline that doesn't rehash everything we've been over before with no real new information, and I can't imagine X-Philes won't pack the theatres in droves! :)

Francisco Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

I cannot wait for this movie to be made and released. The X-Files is classic TV!

Jenny Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 10:33 AM EST

I always want to see agent Mulder and agent Scully get it on....lol.
Missed the series and can't wait for the movie.

Frances Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 10:21 AM EST

Are you kidding me??? I squealed at my desk when I read the story! I emailed my BF right away, since she is also a die hard X-Files fan. I really, really hope this happens. I'll be first in line!!!

Ames Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 10:20 AM EST

To be honest, not really. I was a big fan for a while, but the conspiracy got way too convoluted. I don't even know how it ended. When I see repeats on TV, I get excited at first, but they seem so dated now. For some reason, the idea of power hungry government leaders isn't so entertaining anymore. Hmmm...

Scott Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

Why do you let someone who clearly doesn't get or like the X-Files cover this story. Give it to someone who cares please.

kingbaggot Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 10:11 AM EST

i didn't see anything in Godzilla to match up to Martin Landau taking a piss in the back alley of a bar. After that the whole film was always going to be on a downward slide...

Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

The truth is out there. I want to believe. I love DD and GA and can't wait for this to happen!

jeremy Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

Can't. Bloody. Wait.

melissa Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

Still a fan. An excited fan.

Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

Can't say that I'm all that excited by another movie, but I will echo the thoughts of others on this post asking, "Why is someone who never watched the show and never liked the show the one writing up the movie reports?" I was always a peripheral fan of the show (never a real diehard) but I at least have sense enough to know that the X-Files has one of the most loyal cult following of fans out there. It seems like EW could find a writer to report on the movie news who at least LIKED the show.

Chris Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 08:58 AM EST

I just wanna say that X-Files is the greatest show ever written/made and regardless of what storyline they use to make this movie sequel, it will be phenomenal!

Todd Lough Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 08:40 AM EST

First and foremost, The X-Files is my favorite TV show of all time, so heck yeah I'm excited for a new movie! I've been meaning to go back and re-watch the entire series again on DVD and now I have the perfect reason to start. And despite what so many other people that left comments have said, I think the last few seasons were still stellar (perhaps I'm just biased but I don't care.) I'm really hoping the story for the film will involve appearances from Agents Doggett and Reyes, as well as Skinner. I also hope that somehow The Lone Gunmen (whose spin-off was unnecessarily cancelled after just one season) will be back too, but if the film takes place sometime after the series finale, I know that probably won't be possible since they heroically sacrificed themselves in the episode "Jump the Shark". But just like the truth, us X-Files fans are still out there and yes, we'll be lining up to see the new movie, no matter when it comes out. I can't wait to hear that classic theme again.

stillafan Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 08:28 AM EST

I guess just about everyone is excited about a new film!

Mells Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 08:22 AM EST

Hey - who remembers these classic X-Files quotes:
"Her name is Bambi?"
"Auto-erotic asphyxiation"
"The Stupendous Yappi"
"Woman, go and make me a sandwich!"

Mells Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 08:19 AM EST

WOOOOHOOOO!
Can't wait - I hope its a great movie and I know I'll see it opening night!! Right now I'm stuck watching reruns in syndication or the episodes on DVD so I'm looking forward to something fresh - as long as it has little or nothing to do with that whole 'Super Soldiers' story arch. I just never got into that one...

Tim Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 08:07 AM EST

Let's admit it: the first five seasons of the X-Files were great. After that, the show went a little downhill. If the movie can be of the same quality as an episode from season 1 - 5, I'm there. Still need to get the first seasons on DVD.

Michelle Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 07:58 AM EST

I am definitely looking forward to an X-files movie. Sure it is far to long since the series ended but the stories are good on their own. The cockroach episode is among my favorites.

Nate Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

How can you even ask that?! EVERYONE will!

Kathleen Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 07:20 AM EST

*raises hand*
Totally. Best Buy had all the seasons on sale for $19.99 a couple weeks ago, and I must have had a stroke because I didn't buy any. Still kicking myself over that one.

rebecca Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 06:24 AM EST

X-FILES!!!!!!
Of course everyone's excited. The Cockroach episode was great. And the movie was about 60 million times better than Godzilla.

Patty Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 06:17 AM EST

Ahhhhhhh, YES!!!!!!! I will see it a million times!!!!!

Clair Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 06:00 AM EST

While I type I am watching The X-files on TNT - yeah, I am excited for a new movie! Hopefully Carter won't mess it up, but if Duchovny is in he'll help save the script (last two seasons sucked, no big Duchovny imput, co-ink-e-dink?)

Nicole Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 03:15 AM EST

I've been reduced to my decade-old shrieking fangirl self at the prospect of seeing more X-Files. Yes please!

Now excuse me while I go dust off my old MP3 of Bree Sharp's "David Duchovny."

Daxenna Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 03:14 AM EST

I am a total fan of the show. I truly want the new movie will be shot soon for a summer release in 2008

jimmy55dean Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 02:30 AM EST

YAY!!!!! If they make it, we will come! See? I am a total nerd.

Meta Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 01:03 AM EST

I am stoked man!!!! My boyfriend and I and his mother are rewatching then whole series on DVD right now and are thrilled to see a new movie. I rememnber watching the show with my dad as a kid and loveing it and I still do. Its amazeing. Can NOT wait. We will be there opening night.

fox mulder 4 eva Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 12:36 AM EST

who's excited about this? ME!!!! i've been waiting all these years...will even camp out even though there probs won't be a line.

xphile Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 11:55 PM EST

Huge fan, always will be. So excited for the next movie! Chris Carter has said that the movie won't deal with the mythology at all, and will be a stand-alone monster of the week type of case. So nothing with Scully's baby or Adam Baldwin's Knowle Rohrer character or especially Mulder's sister (late in the show, it was revealed she is quite dead, killed by alien tests performed by the CSM). Hopefully, that means no Doggett or Reyes either (nothing against Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish, but The X-Files is about Mulder and Scully). I say, great! The movie can get back to the amazing vibe the show had in the middle seasons -- maybe it can even be set in like 1997, when the Lone Gunmen were alive. Anyway, looking forward to it!

Sam L Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 11:14 PM EST

Yeah, the last four seasons sucked. I don't care. I am SO seeing the new X-Files movie on the big screen, even if Duchovny is nearing 50 and Anderson nearing 40. It's gonna be great.

tug Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 10:47 PM EST

I'm psyched by the idea - though I'll believe it when I see it. I hope agents Doggett and Reyes will make an appearance, and of course Terry O'Quinn as Darius Michaud. The Lone Gunmen? Skinner?

eve6 Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 10:45 PM EST

Me Me Me Me Me and Me.

Emru Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 10:07 PM EST

Sorry, Chris Carter. You blew your chance with that lame series finale that was a kick in the pants to those of us who stuck by the series. I'll have other things to do, thanks.

TuMadre Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 09:47 PM EST

"Who out there (1) is still a fan of The X-Files? And (2) is excited for this?"

You need to be slapped hard for this. What?! Young people who enjoyed The X-Files back in the day suddenly disappeared!? Who do you think is buying all the plasmas, HDTVs, HD anything and maintain shows like HEROES and The 4400? Who is Sci-Fi's bread and butter?

We're still here.. and we're stoked!

Invisi619 Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 09:37 PM EST

Couldn't Slezak have announced this? I'm also sure that either Annie or Whitney loved X-Files and thus do it justice by actually being psyched about this news!! Please rain on someone else's parade.

bma Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 09:03 PM EST

What, they couldn't find an X-Files fan to write this column? EW was always such a big supporter. Anywho, I'm stoked!

Pai Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 09:01 PM EST

Definitely am interested to see it.

The first movie stunk, but still had moments enough to hold the fans' interest.

I do hope the second one would be better.

Ep "nothing mean to write in the quotes for now" Sato Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 08:41 PM EST

I was disappointed at the end of X-Files. No Mulder, and Annabeth Gish couldn't pull it off at all(and my friends, Annabeth Gish is a demi-goddess to me).

That said, Adam Baldwin'll probably be in it, maybe we'll get real answers this time, and maybe Fox'll finally find his sister? We can only hope.

But ONLY if they give us real answers! No more of this "watch the sequel to learn the truth" garbage. Between Lost and Heroes there's already enough cliffhangers in my life, thankyouverymuch.

Amanda Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 08:34 PM EST

I am super excited about the movie. Sadly, I was turned on to X-files around Season 4 so I played ketch-up after it ended in 2002. But Mulder/Scully, I wonder what story they will write for them since Mulder escaped prison, the baby is adopted, Lone-Gunman dead, Reyes/Doggett have no more X-Files....just curious! Maybe "The Truth is Out there" and they answer all the questions and the X-Files come back. Sorry about my tangent, just excited!

Mary Beth Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 08:31 PM EST

1) STILL A FAN!. I definitely considered myself an "X-Phile" back in the day. Overall the series is near and dear to my heart despite its downward spiral at the end. And 2) YES I'M EXCITED!!!

Nuff said......Except next time EW you have news about the upcoming X-Files movie, can you have someone who gives an OUNCE of crap about the X-Files post on it? I didn't need to hear this yummy news with a side of sarcasm and mockery.

Sean K. Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 08:29 PM EST

This guy doesn't even know what he is talking about, how can you say you don't care for a second x-files movie when you haven't even seen any of the episodes. I am very excited and I have been waiting many years for this.

Grulg Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 08:25 PM EST

Of course this should still connect. Lord knows that Goober W. is about as incompetent a Prezzie as you'll ever see-but you know, they DO have a couple eps of this show that involve smart monkeys...so who knows?

RGT Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 08:25 PM EST

Very excited! I've always been a fan of the show and am interested to see where the characters are now and what the heck Scully's baby is up to!

Annie Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 08:23 PM EST

Still a huge fan of the show, and a huge fan of Gillian Anderson's post-X-Files career (though no one in this country can see most of it). I'd see a second film, but I think Chris Carter needs to nix the involvement of Frank Spotniz, and he shouldn't direct. Not that I believe this will happen anyway. David Duchovny's been saying similar things to this for years.

If it does happen though, please make it less Fight the Future and more classic X-Files. Big special effects does not a compelling film make, Chris. Keep that in mind.

sean Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 07:51 PM EST

We get the fact that this guy doesn't like the show. Who is he to judge those who like the show.I Don't think his tastes are any better than others. I like many others think the show was great, and are excited to hear that their making a sequel.

Jill Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 07:43 PM EST

LOVED the cockroach episode!!! Makes me truly excited for the movie

Lene Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

Am I going to be there? Oh, you betcha!! I still miss the show - not the final season, mind you, but the vintage stuff. The good years. Another movie? Really?? Can I start lining up now?

trw1570 Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

I'm on board with the movie just as long as it doesn't deal to much with the alien conspiracy stuff. I don't think I can take any more of that.

RobC, the government is more than capable of covering up a conspiracy. It has done so many times. I think your concerns have more to do with the current members of the Executive and Legislative branches than it does with the government as a whole.

Brandi Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

I would wait forever! Hopefully I won't have to!

John McIntyre Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

Loved the show, loved the first movie, and can't wait for this new one.....Just hope they don't screw it up.

RobC Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 06:48 PM EST

Besides, I wouldn't hold your breath. Mulder was at TCA to promote his show and get his name in print.

RobC Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

Hmm… there is no question that “The X-Files” tapped into the ‘90s zeitgeist and was an incredibly entertaining and influential show (I may still have that special EW episode guide that Gregory mentioned).

However, its government conspiracy-laden premises may seem antiquated today. Does anyone really think that a bureaucracy as large and ineffective as ours could engineer a complex and dizzying myriad of lies?

In the post-9/11, post-Hurricane Katrina, Iraq war failures, it seems that our government is incapable of accomplishing anything as straight forward as an alien-human hybrid colonization conspiracy.

Frankly, it was all a bit exhausting and amounted to nothing.

WendyD Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 06:09 PM EST

Forever and always, this show was my most intense TV love.

Jesse Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

Totally excited for another X-Files movie! I agree with the other posters: why write a blog about the anticipation level of this movie when you weren't even a fan of the original??

James Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 05:46 PM EST

I loved the show when it was on. Yes, it was terrible after Mulder left. However, if the new movie has a good script then it could reinvigorate the franchise. Also, you have no right dissing a show that you never watched. X-files was a great show.

Ceballos Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 05:38 PM EST

I was a fan of the show, but I kinda tailed away once Duchovny. Nothing against Robert Patrick's Agent Dogget, but the show overall just wasn't as good. As a result, I don't know how the series ended, so I'm afraid I'd be a bit lost when the movie rolls around. I don't think I'm the only person who kinda stopped following the show towards, the end, so hopefully they'll have that in mind when they make the movie.

Also, Greg (can i call you Greg) I can accept you saying that Temple of Doom is better than Last Crusade, but saying the Matthew Broderick-led Godzilla is better than Fight the Future is just crazy talk.

At least we both agree that On the Lot is just awful.

Ryan Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 05:18 PM EST

Hell yeah. I love my hot red head. If they can create a bunch of garbage sequels like Hostel, Saw and Spiderman, you might as well hype it up some for the show that gave the FBI a paranomal fan club

Brandon O. Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

How could you not be excited? Sure, the final two seasons were total garbage, and the movie will have a lot of explaining to do about a lot of different things, but I think it'll be great. It couldn't be worse than the first movie.

JMC Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

while i became disenchanted with the show after DD left, i will still go see this.

meg Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

I really liked XFiles but I'd rather Gillian got more roles in other things. Putting the Scully suits on again seems a step back for her...

Jack D Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Another glimpse of Mulder and Scully together gives me reason to live.

Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

I can't believe you dislike the X-Files so much! How can you not love it? I am so pumped for this new movie!!!

William Mon, Jul 16, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

yes and yes. always have been always will be.
