iPod inspection: What are your five newest songs?

Jul 26, 2007, 06:00 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: iPod inspection, Music

Siouxsie_l_2 True confessions time: My main motive for today's edition of iPod inspection is a selfish one. That's because previous installments — like the time you listed the five most shameful songs on your playlists — reminded me of the scads of great tracks I still need to add to my own collection. How have I been living without Boy Krazy's "That's What Love Can Do," Tyra Banks' "Shake Ya Body," or KLF's "Justified and Ancient" (Tammy Wynette version, of course)? I don't know. YOU tell ME!

Anyhow, during a recent closet cleanout, I tossed a pile of cassingles into the trash, then upgraded to their digital versions. Don't judge me: Cassingles may be an endangered species, but they're bulky! Four of the five newest songs on my iPod playlist are a result of that purge; the last on the list is a track I burned onto my computer from a CD that's been gathering dust in my collection since the day I brought it home back in 2001. Check out my five newest songs on my playlist, then head to the comments section to ridicule me mercilessly share your own.

Elastica, "Connection"
Siouxie and the Banshees, "Kiss Them for Me"
Dawn Penn, "You Don't Love Me (No No No)"
Lisa Stansfield, "This Is the Right Time"
Angie Martinez, "Dem Thangz"

abp~ It's funny how our kids influence what we have on our iPods. My daughter's are both big fans of "I'm A Believer". My six year old prefers the Monkees original but my 3 year old liked the Smash Mouth version from Shrek. Whenvers she asks for the song she says "I want to hear the loud one."

"Thinktank" - Airiel
"Someone Great" - LCD Soundsystem
"Atlas" - Battles
"+81" - Deerhoof
"Hey Girl" - Figurines

abp Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

"Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane. A moldy oldie, you say? Well, I've been listening to the Cars soundtrack nonstop for months in the car with my 3-year old, when the other day she said that her favorite song is the cover of that song by Rascall Flats. I was horrified (I'm not a fan of that remake), so I downloaded the original (and far superior, IMO) version for her to hear instead. I owned the "Mad Mad World" album back in the day and loved it then....Hmmm, maybe I'll have to go download some more songs off of that album now! : )

Joslyn Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

jackie-oh Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

On that thought, doesn't Ms Peters look amazing for her age? She seems to have entered a cryogenic freeze circa 1994. She can still pull off a strapless gown! Yeesh what a cleavage....not that that sort of thing does anything for me, hehe.

jackie-oh Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:22 AM EST

Ooh yeesh people, you all sound achingly hip compared to me. My latest library additions are the Miss America 1983 Medley (http://youtube.com/watch?v=eEhwWqr18hc) and the Bernadette Peters-led musical medley of nominated songs from the 59th Academy Awards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et5Ykg50Z-I). What makes it even more shameful is that I went to the trouble of converting them from video to audio format so I could listen to them in the car too. Shameful I know, but not as shameful as the Emmys failure to recognise with a special award the wonderful "Good Morning Baltimore" sequence on the subway from Ugly Betty. Seriously that Justin kid knows how to shake a hip!
