Radiohead just got a sweet b-day tribute

Ok_l Annie already penned a post wishing OK Computer a happy 10th birthday, but the kids over at Stereogum have done us one better by recruiting musicians to reinterpret songs from that groundbreaking Radiohead album, releasing a set of limited-edition mp3s here.

The tracks — from artists and acts like Cold War Kids, Dave Bazan, and My Brightest Diamond — are occasionally faithful and occasionally deconstructed. Several are more successful than others (rock on with your bad self, John Vanderslice!), but all include "liner notes," and there's a nice essay from the Stereogum guys to go along with it. Basically, it's just a cool project, and a fun, clicky time for a mid-week workday. Why, I'm feeling fitter/happier/etc. already!

I'm not even going to address Julie's comment. It's just nonsensical dribble.

However, I don't understand a tribute album for OK Computer when The Bends is clearly the BEST Radiohead CD, if not one of the BEST albums of all time (that’s right, I said BEST album of ALL time!).

It's genius. Which is more than I can say for Julie-Downer below.

Julie,

I appreciate your opinion, of course, but it's worth noting that OK Computer is one of, if not the best album of the past 10 years. Of course, that's my opinion, as well, but a lot of critics will agree.

Secondly, how often do you see a music blog coming up with something like this? A blog offering up a tribute album is a pretty historic thing. It's definitely worth noting. There's plenty of room for celeb stuff and music coverage, even if it isn't Kelly Clarkson, Beyonce, Kat McPhee, et al.

Julie, those among us who are open to new things musically (and that seems to be a large number of folks who read this blog) appreciate when things like this are posted in here. Do I, an avid hater of American Idol, complain whenever anything related to that insipid karaoke fest is posted in here? No, because I understand that people have varied tastes.

Now, a large number of us appreciate and love Radiohead (which is why they sell out every single show they play wherever they play it), and this tribute album is the kind of cool thing I enjoy. Also, if you don't like the festival reviews, or indie rock stuff, don't read it. That's what I choose to do with the stuff that doesn't interest me. Considering this is free, I also don't think you have a right to complain about what is posted here, but that's just me.

For those of you who are interested in quality music, the My Brightest Diamond track is treee-mendous here. As are most of them.

"Limited-edition mp3s"?
What could that possibly mean?

Derek Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

Oh, and OK Computer has been certified multi-platinum in both the US and UK, so it's pretty safe to say that there are millions of people out there who would care about this post.

Many "popular" artists today struggle to sell a million albums, much less one that many publications consider to be one of the best albums of the 90's.

Ok, now I'm done. =)

I'm not going to say "Boo Julie! Everyone loves this music!" but I will say that the POP in POPwatch stands for "Popular Culture." Last time I checked, OK Computer (and music in general) are a huge part of popular culture.

It's not all about "making fun of celebrities." If you enjoy only that, go read US Weekly. I enjoy all that too, but it doesn't mean that I don't want a little variety in my POPwatch. If anything, the variety is what makes it one of the best blogs on the net.

And Whitney's ability to write detailed accounts of music festivals, give us cool links such as this one and make fun of Rock on Hell's Kitchen is why I personally enjoy her posts. (That and the fact that she seems to enjoy Dierks Bentley as much as I do. Hey, what can I say..I'm from Georgia.)

If you don't like the post, skip it. Don't ruin it for people who want to read about Lindsey Lohan's rehab progress AND how cool Arcade Fire are live.

So, thanks for the variety Whitney. Some of us appreciate it.

yes julie, you've hit the nail on the head. we would all rather read about musicians like fall out boy, nickelback, justin timberlake and fergie that are popular, instead of the most talented band sinc nirvana... exactly my thoughts. or why don't we have another post about some popular tv show like american idol, or grey's anatomy, instead of one about battlestar galactica or flight of the conchords? julie, i think YOU should be an editor at EW, i really do

Not everything she posts is going to appeal to everyone. If you aren't interested in Radiohead, just skip the post and go on read to read the ones that look appealing to you.

Thanks for the post. : )

Whitney,
You and I have had a long relationship on this website. You write your articles, I read them, I laugh, I send the links to my friends, and so on. But lately, it just ain't happening for me. You write about music festivals and bands which I suspect the MAJORITY (I will get reprimanded for this entry) of EW readers do not care about. YOU care about it, I'm sure, which is why I am here to tell you that you have become a selfish member of this relationship. Where are the snarky entries mocking celebrities or popular shows? Where's the sarcasm, the wit, the amazing humor? I'll tell you where it is, it's lost to your boring writing about music which does not appeal to most EW readers. You have let me down, you have let many others down. Now I suspect some of you will respond to what I'm saying "Boo Julie! Everyone loves this music!" To which I reply, no, not everyone loves this music, few of you do, but that leaves the rest of us who come to POPwatch for POP blogging lost.
