You must help with the Must List

Jul 18, 2007, 06:00 AM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Must List

No, we're not slacking on the job, but we do want your help. As we've done for the past three weeks, we've left a slot open in the Must List in the upcoming issue of EW, a slot for you to fill with your pick for the best in current movies, TV, music, books, video games, websites, or other pop cultural artifacts. Please suggest up to three fresh entertainment items from your own Must List, and feel free to explain your choices. Also, please include your e-mail address. (We won't publish it and we won't share it — we just need it to contact you if your submission is chosen.) Your deadline is noon EDT on Thursday, July 19; your reward is everlasting glory (and by "everlasting," we mean "lasting exactly one week") in the form of a citation in the magazine if we pick your entry. Make us proud, PopWatchers.

"Surrounded by Insanity" (book) by Robert Hofmann. Writers' strike, writer's schmike. This book is the funniest thing I've read in a long time. Would make a great sitcom. You listening Comedy Central?

Schuyler Fisk "From Where I'm Standing". It's in the movie "I'm Reed Fish". Great song.

THE PLEASE DEPT.
I know how much EW likes to forage through new and amazing bands on myspace. Well, this Brooklyn-bred trio is without a doubt the next big thing. Their quirky sound is just plain fun, throwing ironic quips and double-entendres at the unsuspecting listener. The calvaclade of uplifting beats makes you feel as if you were five, dancing along to your favorite Muppet Show track. I recommend "A Big Deposit" or "Sailor's Mouth". In other words, this band is AMAZING. Please put them on this week's Must List!

Mad Men on AMC. I'm addicted! The time period, 1960. They smoke and drink and treat women like crap and the men make themselves sympathetic to boot.

JR Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

Hollyoaks, wildly popular and addictive UK soap available daily for download on BBC America Online. Includes a huge gay storyline that is just getting started over here that got huge ratings and headlines in Britain.

Wonderful Tonight the Pattie Boyd bio about her marriages to two pop icons including George Harrison. A great insiders view to London in the late 60's.

The new Leann Rimes song/video - "Nothing Better to Do"... unbelievable!!! Great song with a kick-ass video to boot! Can't get enough...

For first week of September 2007
1 Right at Your Door It's fear and loathing in L.A. when a ex-musician (Rory Cochrane) worries about his wife (Mary McCormack) and life after a dirty bomb detonates downtown.
2 Heart Full of Soul by Taylor Hicks. Surprising honest about his past and oddly optimistic about his future.
3 Sarah Mather "My Song" (only at iTunes) This former season 4 Idol wannabe has something begging to be heard on the next season of Grey's Anatomy or Private Practice.

John Perry Thu, Aug 16, 2007 at 01:22 PM EST

Not enough is spoken about the yet to be released Idiocracy. Granted the reviews on line have been polarized but the consensus of my friends and I is that it is a howl. It is a MUST SEE!

Scott Fri, Aug 3, 2007 at 09:37 PM EST

1. Kelly Clarkson's My December
There are some beautiful songs on this cd (ie-Sober and Irviine) and there are some songs that are dying to have commercial success (ie Can I Have a Kiss , Maybe, and How I Feel). I want more people to truly listen to this cd and give it a fair chance.

2. E's The Soup--Joel McHale's timing is priceless.

Steve Manson Mon, Jul 30, 2007 at 05:44 AM EST

"OutQ In The Morning with Larry Flick," the other GREAT morning show on Sirius Satellite Radio. This guy is more than the "next Howard Stern." He is outtrageously funny and politically smart.

Tony Baker Mon, Jul 30, 2007 at 01:20 AM EST

For the week of July 29-Aug.4.

The must list for me.
ON the music front. Common "Finding Forever" I love this album. Entourage is great right now. And Hot Fuzz on dvd. Hot Fuzz was hot indeed.

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix in IMAX 3-D. Already saw it in the regular theater and now I'm anxious to get the full IMAX effect.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. Most anticipated book of my life. I'm actually starting to get anxiety. How can it not be Saturday yet?!?

Derek Dubois Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

It's a tad out of the box (and maybe a bit illegal) but the top of everyone's MUST LIST should include the website http://www.tv-links.co.uk/

This website is an amazing hub that links (therefore no messy downloading and no fear of spyware) to streaming videos of your favorite past and current TV shows and Films.

I'm on here all day every day catching up with Lost, The Office, and replaying Futurama.

Ep Sato Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

Quick question for the editors: is there some sort of "honorable mention" possible? On the same week I said Burn Notice should be on the Must list, EW placed the show on their too.

Here's my idea: Say in next week's Must list you all planned to pimp "Bronx is bunring" already. Why not write something like "the show's also supported by several of our readers like xyz and zyx".

Henning Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 10:29 AM EST

1) www.icanhascheezburger.com - mindless cat entertainment

Shea R Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 10:13 AM EST

My picks:
1) Joel McHale on The Soup - this show is freakin' hilarious and a staple of my summer TV watching.
2)Any Bitter Thing: A Novel by Monica Wood - I know everyone is on the Harry Potter kick this summer, but this book was one of the best books I've read all summer about a priest, his niece, and the pain unfounded accusations cause everyone. Awesome ending!
3) Dream for an Insomniac - a re-discovered gem amongst my VHS tapes showcasing a young Jennifer Aniston and Ione Sky (who doesn't love her from Say Anything fame!) about the trials and tribulations of finding your soulmate and not settling for second best.

Sandra Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 10:04 AM EST

Mandy Moore's Wild Hope. This is the most beautiful album I've heard in a long time; very eloquent arrangements, strong lyrics and Mandy's gorgeous and mature voice. It's at once heartbreaking and hopeful. Give this one a chance.

Bobby Rowe Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 09:58 AM EST

Kelly Clarkson's Sober (new single off My December).

The fact that the song is actually well written is rendered irrelevant by Kelly's performance of it (we are talking about the girl who broke records with "A Moment Like This"). Despite being able to out-sing everyone else on the airwaves today, Kelly does the unthinkable: she holds back. This makes the sadness in the song ring truer while slowly--perhaps too slowly for modern pop radio--building to the desperate final chorus in which she taps into the reserve supply of energy she's been storing for the rest of the song. The near-unfathomably high release would probably cause slack jawed drivers to drift of the side of the road if radio ever decided to pick it up, so just in case they do, download it now and listen in the safety of your own home.

moni Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

1. Man vs. Wild: Seriously, Bear Grylls will eat anything, but deep down he really craves mayonnaise...

2. Harry Potter Mania: I'm a librarian. The (positive) insanity over a book just warms the cockles of my heart.

3. John Reuben: Most people probably don't know him, but he is a musical GENIUS, as clearly evidenced on his latest CD "Word of Mouth".

ann Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 09:51 AM EST

The Dollar Show: where it's just about the right price to see all the fine-quality summer blockbuster sequels. (plus one can afford to both see the movie and have popcorn and a coke.)

Teddy Thompson. Up Front and Down Low. Thompson's melancholy voice is a perfect match for some classic country hits.

Cassie Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

Officetally.com- It's getting me through my summer Office withdrawal!

Adela Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 07:32 AM EST

1. Allison Mack. On the CW that pleases more emphasis on how hot you look, Allison has shown that you can be hot and intelligent at the same time. She's the most underrated character on that show just because she doesn't have the mythos of Superman behind her. Definitely deserves to be recognized for her excellent work.
2. Psych - Stronger than ever
3. Burn Notice - a great new show that keeps you wanting to found out what happens next.

monica Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

Here's my guilty pleasure must list:
Hidden Palms: I'm truly intrigued by the schizo behavior of Michael Cassidy.
Greek: Jacob Zachar has promising potential to be the next addition to Judd Apatow's geek gang--all he needs is funnier material.
Kyle XY: Will he ever catch a friggin break?

Elizabeth Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 11:28 PM EST

The Next Food Network Star! The challenges are fun (current food network stars always participate) and the contestants are actually talented. JAG getting kicked off was the biggest reality tv scandal of the summer, and unfortunately you probably missed out on it because you haven't been watching. I might like this show better than Top Chef - trust me, that says a lot.

1. The Kooks - an amazingly fresh and energetic British band. Their 2006 CD Inside In Inside Out has been on repeat in my car for almost a week and I am still loving every second of it.
2. The Fratellis - now on a North American tour, another amazing band from the UK that just gets better and better with every listen. Download "Chelsea Dagger" right now and prepare to dance.
3. Waitress - let the pie-craving commence. An adorably sweet movie, Keri Russel at her best.

Kelly Clarkson- "My December"
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Marisa Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:30 PM EST

My must for this week is being a college student eagerly awaiting Harry Potter. All around campus for summer quarter everyone in my classes is talking abot Harry Potter instead of electromagnetism or whatever we learned this week(I certainly wasn't paying attention) and many of us keep staying up late to barrel through OoTP and HBP just so we have something to sustain us until friday at midnight. Its odd seeing early 20-somethings so excited about something that its all we talk about, but it will be a bittersweet finish. As Harry becomes an adult, so will we, having started our own journeys with him when we were 10 and 11. So goodbye Harry, Ron and Hermione. You've gotten us all through our adolescence, and now we must become adults. But then again, maybe not. Is it stil ok to wait in line for a midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince after you've graduated college?

mmmm Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:19 PM EST

Kelly Clarkson's My December - substance and soul. amazing!

Music - Bright Eyes. This band suits my the current emo theme of my life.

TV- Smallville. Counting the days till its return. Only to confirm that Chloe (Allison Mack) is alive and that she finally gets with Clark!

The Closer. Just a STRONG show with a STRONG lead.

1) Food Network Challenge- who knew competitive baking/cooking could be so riveting
2) Ratatouille- Only Pixar could make a rat charming
3)Josh Kelley- Just Say the Word

Alex Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:00 PM EST

Burn Notice - best summer TV show
Lacey on So You Think You Can Dance - hottest reality TV star
Good Girl Gone Bad, Rihanna - Best summer album

Richard K Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

My 3 item Must List:

Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughn
By far the best comic I have read in over twenty years. Vaughn does a great job of ending just about ever issue with an "Alias" type cliffhanger. You can even buy most of them now in Graphic Novel form, so save some dough and catch up on the back issues! (Also doesn't hurt that Vaughn has made his way to the tv set via "Lost"!)

TV: Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares Forget "Hell's Kitchen" in which the Fox Producers have obviously told Gordon to go as over the top as possible as much as he can. Instead, tune into BBCAmerica and watch the master chef take a week to sort out some off blokes and the restaurants they're ruining. You'll still get some of that Ramsay flair for the cuss words, but he comes off as a much more genuinely likeable guy. The kind of guy people would actually WANT to work for.

Website: woot.com
My favorite discount site. It's done perfectly. One item per day with a clever description quip. Nuff said.

Jasper Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 07:49 PM EST

Scott Baio is 45 and Single- Oddly affecting.

T.I. vs. T.I.P- exceptional.

Brad Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 07:43 PM EST

TV- Big Brother...it's really great this season!

Music- Michael Buble

Chris Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, my favorite Potter flick.
2. Transformers, gotta love all that action.
3. Hell's Kitchen: watching Josh and Bonnie screw up, Julia give her opinion, Rock talk in third person and Jen look out of place and confused is the highlight of Monday.
4. Earl, Office, and 30 Rock: the three best shows on TV.

Gord Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

My Must List
tv - Hidden Palms (yes a trainwreck but a fun one)
movie - Transformers (a blockbuster that doesn't suck)
Music - Promised Land by Wippenberg (can't decide if it's trance or house but it gets me moving)

Shmendy Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 05:30 PM EST

Must!
1. Don't laugh, but NBCs Thursday comedies are still must see for me. I adore My Name is Earl (and loved the whole "meta" thing with www.televisionwithoutpity.com). The Office is simply brilliant and 30 Rock slays me.
2. Therefore...I nominate as must list actors...Alec Baldwin, Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee, Steve Carell.
3. Great books that you'll never hear about from Oprah...anything by TR Pearson, Sean Stewart, Tim Powers, Bruce Sterling, Terry Pratchet.
4. The media, and the public, finally finding the outrage over government arrogance and error. For too long after 9/11 it was socially incorrect to be critical of the authorities. If you're angry SHOUT IT OUT.

Tim Lade Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 05:23 PM EST

1) Top Chef: A show about real chefs stuck in product placement hell but with less people named Donkey.

2) Imogen Heap's live performance of Just for Now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSIbfzK2spg

and

3) The truthiness filled documentary "Scene of the Crime" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LKkaIra3eg

KateDFW Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 05:02 PM EST

Big Love is also one of my favorite shows. It is just hitting its stride. Cast, storylines and the music are all great!

KateDFW Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 04:58 PM EST

1.The Closer (Best Show on TV right now)
2.Burn Notice (great cast and you get Bruce Campbell!
3. NFL Training Camp openings! Kickoff is right around the corner!

Daniel Fidler Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 04:54 PM EST

-- 'New Avengers' by Brian Michael Bendis; with the introduction of The Skrull Saga ("Who can you trust?") and beautiful art by Leinil Yu, the Marvel monthly comic is now at the top of my pile every time it comes out.
-- "Extras" Season 2 on DVD; The episode "Daniel Radcliffe" is absolutely hysterical.
-- Nicholas Hooper's "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" Soundtrack.

Ryan Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

Gary Oldman in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Patton Oswalt, "Werewolves and Lollipops"

Kings of Leon, Because of the Times

Rachel Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

My top choices for the Must List are:
Comedians of the summer - aka, Last Comic Standing - this show features some of the best talent out there. And, who couldn't use a laugh these days? The highlight - new talent Matt Kirschen, Spencer Brown, and Josh Howie. The Brits know their comedy!
TV on DVD - Although Freaks and Geeks left us in 2000, the show is absolutely fantastic. The cast is spectacular and the jokes are right on. One of the best series to hit television. Plus, the DVDs feature hilarious commentary and behind the scenes info.
The Closer - What better way to spend a sultry hot summer night then to watch Kyra Sedgwick kick some murderous booty? Great to see a woman in a leading role for once that is pretty realistic.
August 3 - Matt Damon returns as Jason Bourne to complete the Bourne series. This movie has received little press, but I still can't wait to see it.
"The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri - a beautifully crafted and poignant tale. One of my top 5 books!

nathan Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

film - Nikki Blonsky in Hairspray
tv - Big Love
dvd - Ace in the Hole by Criterion

Wednesday Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

I second the guy who mentioned the Bob Fosse "Walk it out" video on youtube- I Think it is Gwen Verdon? LOVE IT!

monica Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 03:50 PM EST

1. Burn Notice: jeffrey donovan's got enough charisma to carry the whole show.
2. "IDK my BFF Jill": the commercial that not only has its own facebook group, but a very accurate portrayal of how the next generation is going to communicate.
3. James Morrison: love his singing, possibly more than Robin Thicke's.
3. Paramore: this would be Avril if she had any self respect and singing skills and better lyrics...that she actually wrote.
4. Justin Timberlake: for his recent numerous collabos with Madonna and 50 Cent.
5. Untitled trailer from J.J. Abrams

Matthew Cruz Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

-Marie Digby's cover of "Umbrella":
The YouTube-born star converts horrendously addictive lyrics into sweet and tender listening. Rihanna had it coming.

-Harry Potter and the Deathly Fake Spoilers:
The closer it gets to H-Day, the more addictive and cringe-inducing the theories and "leaked" manuscripts become. And still we read on, hopeful of our hero's survival or - muggles forbid! - demise.

"Cloverfield" teaser trailer:
The only thing more addicting than the prolific teasers and fake websites is the trailer itself, leaving us with nothing but a release date and a headless Statue of Liberty.

NatAttack Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

1. Natalie Dee comics(www.nataliedee.com); married to the creator of
2. Toothpaste for Dinner comics http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/
3. Season 1 & 2 episodes of Friends--oh my gosh, they're so BAD. It took awhile for the actors to really get into character. It's amazing Jen Aniston is where she is today... yikes1

Wednesday Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:56 PM EST

definitely Scott Baio and Kathy Griffin reality shows. That is the only TV I watch right now. Also, Perez Hilton because he is everywhere right now..loved his comment to Victoria Beckham to stop smiling so much.

Craig Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

The one and only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows.
All I am saying is it 12:01 am yet, Saturday morning? I need my fix.

And even though it is months away, with the NBC announcing Jerry Seinfeld on one of the best sitcoms last year, 30 Rock, to be on the season premiere.

These are just two of my current "must" have items. I cant wait

Steph Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

I have not received it yet. I have not read it yet. But you can be sure that I will be waiting at the front door on Saturday for the latest and last (sniff) Harry Potter book to be delivered to my front door.

Paul Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

1) Eric "America's Player" on Big Brother 8. The somewhat lame challenges presented to this covert contestant are completely overshadowed by Eric's infectious smile and buddy-buddy/wink-wink style of execution. Let's face it, who doesn't want to see this guy come out on top?

2) Kelly Clarkson's "Sober". I much prefer this new Kelly -- tentatively titled Clarkson 3.0 -- over previously pop-infused Kelly. This song delivers a wisely timed crescendo that will surely give you chills.

3) Wade Robson's choreography on "So You Think You Can Dance". From his signature zaney style to his experimental jazz-meets-ballet, Robson is a force to be reckoned with on the summer's favorite dance competition.

mags Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

Music: Time on Earth by Crowded House; worth it for the gorgeous ballads, "Nobody Wants To," "Pour Le Monde," and "Silent House." It's so good to have these guys back.
TV: Flight of the Conchords on HBO-- endearingly quirky characters and hilarious songs/videos.
TV: Doctor Who Season 3 on the SciFi Channel. This show can be all things to all people: it combines campy creatures (both human and alien), witty comedy, provocative philosophy, and heartbreaking romance. Plus, it's got two of the best-looking leads on TV today--David Tennant and Freema Agyeman.

Jer Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:36 PM EST

1. Jon Lovitz for doing offscreen for free that which we'd all pay lots of money to see him do. Now if only we could get him some "quality" time with Kathy Griffin and Paris Hilton...

jahaymay Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:34 PM EST

Bobby Light and his song "Dirty Girl." From MTV's Rob and Big. Absolutely hilarious!

Chris Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

1. Imelda Staunton: Perfectly pink as High Inquisitor Dolores Umbridge, she is hilariously funny, incredibly scary, and deliciously campy.

2. The "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" trailer: Although the movie may suck, one has to give the credit for allowing the image of Jessica Biel in her undergarments to be spread throughout America's television screens. The greatest gift from the entertainment industry to mankind this summer. And at least it's better than those shots of Katherine Heigl from "Knocked Up," if you know what I mean.

Charlie L. Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

obviously World series of pop culture is a must see, but b/c it is an EW production I will assume all the readers are watching it (if not THEN START!!)
CD: The New Pornographers- Challengers
the great new CD (not out yet, but it's so good!) from the (mostly) canadian supergroup that features the unparalleled talent of Ms. Neko Case. The best tracks are "Challengers," "All the Old Showstoppers," and "Go Places."

TV: Big Love is even better this season than it was last season, it is by far my favorite show on TV right now, all three wives (Jean T, Chloe S, and Ginnifer G) deliver emmy worthy performances and Amanda Seyfried and Mary Kay Place are brilliant in their supporting roles. So many great female characters on a show that deals with a real-life institution that is so anti-woman.

Music- All Time Low and Boys Like Girls, their albums are perfect for summer road trips. They are two of the best new pop punk bands out there. If you like Fall Out Boy you'll love these bands.

Zan.Bee Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:03 PM EST

1. Surprisingly watchable Reality TV: Tori & Dean Inn Love -- They are so adorable together.
2. Awesome Summer Drama TV: Traveller -- a nice twist on The Fugative
3. Must have main stream CD: Amy Winehouse, Back to Black
4. Must have underground CD: Elysian Fields, any of their albums -- The greatest NY band ever!!
5. Most underated summer blockbuster film: Live Free or Die Hard

Anne R. Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

1. Torchwood - I cannot wait for this spin-off of "Dr. Who" to start on BBC America. Sexy Sci-Fi with switch- hitter Captain Jack.

2. Harry and the Potters - Just another part of HP mania. A musical group that sing songs based on the books. Classics include "Save Ginny Weasly" and "Voldemort can't stop the Rock" http://www.eskimolabs.com/hp/listen.htm
3.Posh and Becks - The man is too beautiful and talented to be ignored and after that NBC special I find Posh fascinating and funny. Can't wait to see them become part of the L.A. social scene.

Gwen Verdon Walks It Out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=NIGbhPLZmjY

The best YouTube clip I've come across in a long time.

Jeremy Ironside Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

CD: "The Long Walk Back" by Just Off Turner - Unsigned, independent band from Los Angeles. John Mayer recently raved about them (blog.myspace.com/johnmayer) and pointed me in their direction. Straight-ahead rock/pop with a timeless feel with lyrics to die for. You'll be left wondering why these guys aren't signed.

TV: 'Damages' on FX (starting next week) - Glenn Close, Tate Donovan & Ted Danson shine in this gritty law thriller. John Grisham eat your heart out.

Comedy CD/DVD: Patton Oswalt's 'Werewolves and Lollipops' - One hour CD of some of the sharpest, subservant humor accompanied by another one hour DVD of more of the same. Brilliant.

Emily Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

Eureka- clever and delightful!

David Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

1. Alicia Minshew & Thorsten Kaye-As ALL MY CHILDREN's supercouple Kendall & Zach, these two have carried the soap--once daytime's best, and now hopefully on the upswing, via new head writers--with off-the-charts chemistry & charisma. They make AMC a soap watchable for "soap haters."
2. Kelly Bishop-now that Gilmore Girls is over, another show MUST hire this wonderful actress. Spend a weekend watching the GG DVDs and marvel at the bottomless well of talent this veteran dips into every episode.
3. Black Canary: DC's #2 heroine (after Wonder Woman, of course)is FINALLY getting her due: Her own self-titled limited series, kicking ass leading Wondy, Superman,Batman and the other heroes in the pages of Justice League of America, and co-headlining DC's big SUMMER EVENT: BC's marriage to on- again, off-again love, Green Arrow. The producers of SMALLVILLE should wise up and bring those fighting fishnets to the small screen!

Jessica G Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

1. Amy Winehouse - finally something different!

2. Kathy Griffin: My Life in the D List - refreshing to see someone so unashamed about being a media wh0re.

3. The Soup on E! - Joel McHale's delivery is priceless. I daresay (as much as I loved him) he's better than Kinnear.

Blam Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

HAIRSPRAY! It's the best adaptation of a musical ever on film.

sdr Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

i have to say i'm really liking cheesy college comedies this summer- both 'Greek' on abc family, and 'the best years' on the N. perfect summer escapism with SLIGHTLY more substance than the glut of summer reality trainwrecks.

Anne Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Okay...I promise this is the last one: BBC's "Robin Hood" on DVD!

Anne Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

And since you asked for our top 3:
1. "Talk to Me"
2. Pearl (star of "Good Cop, Baby Cop" and "Landlord")
3. Marketa Irglova ("Once")

Anne Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:46 PM EST

Don Cheadle's hilarious and heartfelt turn as Petey Greene in "Talk to Me" is a tour de force performance worthy of an Oscar. The supporting cast, which includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Martin Sheen and Cedric the Entertainer, was wonderful. Taraji P. Henson nearly stole the entire show as Petey's fast-talking and melodramatic girlfriend. I loved everything - the cast, script, music, and, of course, the clothes were perfect!

ali Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

1- Entourage- because there is no better dynamic duo this summer then Ari & Lloyd
2- Greek
3- Rob & Big- ummm did you see Rob's own mom call him a loser? I laughed so hard I cried
4- Rescue Me- I'm so glad FX makes up for all the terrible shows on basic network tv
5- Kathy Griffin- my life on the D-list.
6- All the Harry Potter-ness

Eve Picard Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:27 PM EST

"La vie en rose", starring Marion Cottilard as Edith Piaf is beautiful and touching. She delivers an oscar worthy performance as the tragic songtress.

Merrie Leininger Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:27 PM EST

1. "Weeds" -- I can't take my eyes off of Nancy. Unless I'm laughing too hard at her dumb-ass brother-in-law.
2. "Nighttiming" by Coconut Records. Great, can't-get-it-out-of-your-head music by actor Jason Schwartzman. Perfect summer bittersweet tunes. The video for "West Coast" is also amazingly fun.
3. "Sicko." A must see. I sobbed. SOBBED.
4. "Love is a Mix Tape" by music writer Rob Sheffield. There's been a lot of amazing books about dead spouses lately ("A Year of Magical Thinking" and "About Alice" are also extremely thoughtful and touching) but "Mix Tape" is not only a love story, it's also a retrospective on the great music of the late '80s and early '90s. (Yes, there was great music in the late '80s and early '90s.)
5. "Flight of the Concords." Already constantly quoted in my house. Kills me. I watch it constantly.

Joslyn Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

1.) World Series of Pop Culture (I looooove Pat Kiernan) and Cash Cab.

2.) The Soup - I just wish E! would stop forcing Joel to cover their shows. Please go away, Olly girls.

3.) I posted this before, but I STILL can't get Teenagers by MCR out of my head.

4.) gofugyourself.com - a daily must-read.

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

Film: HAIRSPRAY is coming out on Friday!!! The trailer is enough to get me jumping out of my seat. It's a great musical and I can't wait to see what Adam Shankman has adapted it for the screen. Shout out to Baltimore!

John Book Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

1. In music--Mute Math--their live show gave me more chills than the first time I saw U2 play, and their self-titled CD has almost no skip-tracks. They sure blew away Letterman last night--never seen him react quite like that.
2. TV/Film--Drew Goddard, who wrote the upcoming mysterious JJ Abrams film. He was responsible for my favorite ever Buffy episode and also brings a lot of life to his Lost scripts. I think of him as Joss Jr.

Greg Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:10 PM EST

1) "Live From Abbey Road" on the Sundance channel

2) "The World Series Of Pop Culture"

3) "The Bronx Is Burning" on ESPN

Matt Clark Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

The album "Do You Feel" by the Rocket Summer. It was just released on 7/17/07 and I honestly don't think I've heard a more refreshing piece of music in a long time. Bryce Avary writes every song and plays almost every single instrument on the album. There is not one bad song on this CD and if people would listen to it they wouldn't listen to anything else!

Jane Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

1)Doctor Who
2)Doctor Who
3)Doctor Who

Danielle Hayes Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

1. "Love is a Mix Tape" by Rob Sheffield is such a moving story of love, loss, and how passion for music can provide us all with such extreme joy in the good times and comfort in the dark times. I've been recommending this book to everyone.
2. The White Stripes tour across Canada was amazing. They provided each city on the tour with a secret concert somewhere you'd never expect (here it was in a bowling alley) and visited alot of places most bands don't travel. Loved them before, love them so much more now.

donner Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

What I'm into this week:

1 - The Soup on E!...Joel McHale makes us howl every week...he's great!
2 - World of Pop Culture...my Pat Kiernan and rap lyrics = hilarity ensues...
3 - Ed Helms - The Office's Andy is unpredictable and a loose cannon...perfect for an office environment!

Watching The Daily Show/ Colbert Report clips on 'The Motherload' at ComedyCentral.com because, well I'm too cheap to buy it on iTunes and too old to stay up and watch it.

Elisa Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 11:07 AM EST

1. The Soup on E! with Joel McHale the way he has at Seacrest is too much and so hysterical
2. I am jumping on the Guitar Hero Bandwagon. My roommate recently got it for our Xbox 360 and we are seriously addicted. And you seriously can't get the songs out of your head.
3. Jen on Big Brother. I am not sure what to make of one of the dumbest contestants yet.

My Suggestions:
1) Lauren Graham. We said goodbye to the Gilmores this year, but she still rocks, and I can't seem to recall EW ever giving the show its due recognition (despite the countless number American Idol covers we've had to endure). She is the reason I made it to the theater to see "Evan Almighty".
2) "My December" by Kelly Clarkson. If only for the song "Sober" which is the best song she's ever done.
3) "Torchwood". It's a fantastic sci-fi dramedy on BBC that's finally coming to America. The lead guy (John Barrowman as Capt. Jack Harkness) is totally hot, sexually ambiguous, and did I mention hot? The best episode is in the first season (episode 12) where Jack goes back to the 1940s and meets the man from whom he took his name. The final scene just before he heads back to his own time and has a dance with the hot young fighter pilot and kisses him was as hot as it was heartbreaking. Brilliant.

Stephanie Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:56 AM EST

Spoon's new CD, "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga." Really fun rock, especially on tracks like "The Underdog" -- which features a horn section.

C Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:49 AM EST

The album "Cookies" by 1990s. "Cult Status" has the best line of the summer (not fit for print).

Christa Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

I'm just obsessed with all things Beckham this week. Posh's special, the W Magazine spread, any gossip I can get my hot little hands on.

Nicole Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:44 AM EST

1~Guitar Hero, I keep hearing about how addictive it is, my friends have GH parties and will "air jam" while someone else is playing!
2~Luna Lovegood, that little girl was cast exactly right, mellow and spooky.
3~Spice Girls reunion, I may just make the trek to Vegas, if I can even get tickets!

1. Mia Michaels & Wade Robson routines on SYTYCD. We need a spin-off : So you think you can Choreograph! Judged by MM & WR.

2. All things Harry Potter! So many of us will be in line Friday night at midnight!

3. Peter Bjorn & John - Best find in music this summer!

denny Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST

Victoria Beckham. Her special on NBC was filled with exactly the kind of witty, snarky, very, VERY British humor that would make all those other "celebreality" shows more bearable. Plus, if she can make fun of herself, then why can't we? She's so major!

snarky Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:13 AM EST

New OBSESSION...

Scott Baio is 45 and single. So much cheese...so little time. On the other hand, I think "chachi" is actually trying to grow up.

Unlike "Rock of Love" which was just unwatchable.(i tried, I really did!)

Also, no one mentioned "Hey Paula" - whether she is shilling jewlery at 2 a.m. on QVC or crying about her cell phone to an assistant, "Hey Paula" shows that Paula is crazy, but human, just like the rest of us (but with better hair, makup and meds)

Do Well Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:10 AM EST

1 - Rodrigo y Gabriela - Mesmerizing!
2 - Spokt.com - Cool site to keep in touch with family or friends.
3 - Jim Gaffigan - Side-splittingly funny.

Auriana Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

1. GrimGrimoire for the PS2 - you can't go wrong with anything from Nippon Ichi
2. "The Spirit Stone" by Katharine Kerr - latest book in the greatest fantasy series (in my humble opinion anyways) Especially great as it returns to the format of jumping between incarnations and time periods that "The Golden Falcon" avoided.
3. "First Among Sequels" by Jasper Fforde - I can't gush enough about Fforde's books.

Kat Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

My summer must list includes the following obsessions:

1. Anything and everything Harry Potter - re-reading the books, re-seeing the movies, seeing Order of the Phoenix, and checking www.mugglenet.com on a twice-daily basis for updates.
2. Playing Guitar Hero II on the XBox 360 - I know that the game has been out for a while, but I got this game at the beginning of the summer and barely go three or four days without playing it. I'm not a guitar player, but this chick is rocking it as hard as any one. The sure sign of my obsession: while on two-week vacation visiting family in Vermont, I went to the nearest Best Buy to play the demo version to get my fix - twice.
3. Top Chef - the ONLY TV show that I'm watching this summer. Its not just about the cooking (although I'm picking up some tips - the Upscale Bar-be-Que episode inspired me to throw some bacon-wrapped shrimp on the grill), the chefs are some of the best - cooks and characters - that they've had.

Jeff W. Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

1) Man vs. Wild--Perilous, you-are-there action set pieces? Check. Affably dashing British host? Check. Said host squeezing water from a huge elephant turd directly into his mouth? ABSOLUTELY check.
2) The Onion A.V. Club (http://www.avclub.com/content/)--Join Noel, Keith, and the rest of the A.V. Club gang for the most wickedly scathing, trenchant pop culture commentary on the 'net.
3) His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman--A series of three complex, haunting "children's books" that stand head and shoulders over any Hogwarts adventure yet produced.

Raul Malo's "After Hours." One of the most undervalued singers America has to offer puts classic tunes through a Dean Martin wash cycle. His voice verges on operatic beauty. Instead of the Dexatrim and Starbucks Nicole Richie used to set the mood to get knocked up, she shoulda just put this CD in her player. Coffee just ain't good for the baby or when you have a bad case of the nerves about going to the slammer.

The films of John Carpenter starting with Assualt of Precinct 13 and going all the way through The Thing. This consists of Halloween, The Fog and Escape From New York. A gold streak to rival Hitchcock's 50's films. There ought to be a box set.

Erin Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:49 AM EST

1. The Glasses in Kanye, or should I say, Mr. West’s new video “Stronger.” This “it” eyewear has grown on me immensely. I hope he’s wearing sunscreen when he rocks those because everyone knows, what doesn’t kill you give you vicious tan lines.

2. Creating A Simpson’s Character in your image at www.thesimpsonsmovie.com. Granted it is hard to pick out your look from assorted Simpson’s hair-dos and styles (Squishy T-Shirt anyone?) but it almost looks like me…if I had four fingers it would be a toss-up.

3. The Exlcusive Web Preview of A&E’s new show “The Two Coreys.” It’s essentially You, Me & Dupree with former 80’s teen hunks Corey Feldman & Corey Haim…but even more over acted! I hate how much I love it!

Bill Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:47 AM EST

1. Big Love. It's the Sopranos in Utah.
2. Top Chef. Pack your knives and go.
3. Don't Forget the Lyrics. Wayne Brady may have to choke a karaoke singer.

Heather Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

In addition, Rescue Me also presents a pitch perfect look at post-9/11 New York and the tolls it takes. The current season continues the wonderful mix of hilarious comedy with serious drama. Denis Leary and his co-creators and co-stars deserve more recognition for their work.

Ep Sato Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

The Bronx is Burning: John Torturro, Daniel Sunjata and Oliver Platt ring in fantastic performances as Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson and George Steinbrenner.

This sizzling series about the 1977 New York Yankees is based on the non-fiction book by Jonathan Mahler, and also features commentary by the 1977 Yankees themselves.

The series also captivates with subplots about the Mayoral election, the Son of Sam serial killer, and the general state of urban decay in the late 1970s.

LeapDayBaby Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

1) The Simpsons Movie, of course; and
2) Gym Class Heroes' "Cupid's Chokehold/Girlfriend", if for no other reason than it cracks me up to hear my 11-year-old son singing a Supertramp song that I used to sing when *I* was 11 :)

majigail Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

1. Pat Kiernan- He IS the World Series of Pop Culture. And hearing him say the lyrics to buttdatious rap lyrics is beyond funny.
2. The Singing Bee- We knew Joey could sing and dance, but groove through the audience as a totally wacked out game show host? He's the tops!
3. The Soup- Joel McHale is always there at the end of a long week to offer up tasty pop culture chicken nuggets.

Heather Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:42 AM EST

I said it before and I will say it again - The Wire is the absolute number one must. Every season is such an engrossing, and yes entertaining, commentary on our present society. It presents the reality of urban america with the right amount of humourous touches mixed in with the drama. Everyone could stand to learn the lessons each teaches about urban america today. The Wire is simply the best show ever made for television and everyone must catch up by watching every last season on DVD.

1)tv-links.co.uk -- a great way to catch up on all your favorite TV shows in time for their autumn premieres.

2) Character-driven summer movies -- Truly moving summer flicks like Waitress and Knocked Up are a nice vacation away from bombastic (though impressive) summer blockbusters.

3) Jason Lee -- great, recently rediscovered performances in "My Name is Earl" and The Incredibles have actually got me excited for the somewhat dubious Underdog.

Snooks Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 09:38 AM EST

World Series of Pop Culture...So awesome to watch and participate. (I like to holler out the answers - Yes, sometimes even when I am on the phone) Anyhow, you can play online and participate in chatrooms before the "Triviadome" begins. It's fun and you even learn a thing or too. Pick a team and go!

Oh yes, it does end this week but VH1 will show it in many repeats -- it's great to see how much knowledge you retain from watching previous episodes.

Shawn and Gus, of course!

GoddessLu Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 08:59 AM EST

1) Simpsons Movie. C'mon, I've been waiting 18 years!!! Spider Pig, Ima Weiner, Harry Plopper already are in the pop culture lexicon;
2) World Series of Pop Culture is FANTASTIC. I tried out on the internet and almost made the trip to Austin to audition (I live in NH) where my brother lives (he auditioned) but I won't hold that against them. Note to EVERYONE--the entry tests are much harder than the show content--these guys had to work HARD.
3) Waitress was one of the best movies this year. Charming, no-nonsense characters, great acting (Keri Russell is Felicity no more) and probably started more pie addictions than Twin Peaks.

Rick S Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 08:51 AM EST

Version by Mark Ronson. The british pop producer is throwing a karaoke party with his friends, like Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and Robbie Williams. You bring the dip, he'll supply the smokin hot horn section.

Chris Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 08:36 AM EST

1) Glass Jaw Boxer by Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers. Great country folk rock that teams with a summer time vibe
2) Fimoculous.com. Speaks to the inner nerd with stories on everything related to American culture. Regularly points you in the direction of "unknown" sites, articles, etc that surprise and delight
3) Chris Cornell's cover of Billie Jean (from his Carry On album). Turns a dance classic into a slow burning, soulful, heartbreaking tune

1. Ghost Hunters on SciFi Channel- Two daytime plumbers head up The Atlantic Paranormal Society after hours and investigate haunted locations. Tonight they're doing the Manson Murders. Won't be missing that! Check it out at http://video.scifi.com/player/?id=127813 CREEPY!
2. Celebrity Eye Candy on VH1 - Don't miss the "Totally Weird" show Thursday at 12 noon (EST). Who's weirder? Matthew McConnaughey or the nutball he plays in his new movie Surfer Dude? Too close to call!
Celebs partying like its nineteen ninety-weird: Andy Dick rides his bike to a club, Andy Milonakis does some freestyle rapping and napping outside a club, and Mike Tyson dances to pick up a chick. WEIRD!

3. The Landlord and Good Cop/Baby Cop: Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are child laboring geniuses.Funny or die.com

4. The Traveling Wilburys Greatest Hits: The most super, super bad ever.

5. Entourage: Medellin sucks, but the show is addicting.

1. The return of real radio: "K-Rock" and "CBS FM Oldies" are back in New York, replacing an awful all-talk troop of Howard Stern wannabes and the failed Jack FM format, respectively.

2. Skrulls! Casual comics fans and those who get all their superhero action from half-assed movie adaptations still miss out on a lot of the great serialized fun of actual floppy monthly comic books. Brian Michael Bendis' "Skrull Invasion" storyline in Marvel's Avengers books is just one.

3. Cloverfield! I don't even really know what it is, but I'm already obsessed with J.J. Abrams super-secret movie project, due in theaters on 1-18-08, and the mysterious online "game" promoting it. I gotta get me some Slusho!

Joey Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 07:51 AM EST

We Need Girlfriends (www.weneedgirlfriends.tv). Since moving to Boston, I've dreaded the first of the month (who wants to shell out half a month's salary for a studio apartment? Not me!). But this hilarious little web series helps make it all better; on the first day of every month comes a new adventure in the lives of New York residents Tom, Seth and Rod, recent college graduates who find themselves single and looking after their respective long-term girlfriends dump them.

1. "Wild Hope" by Mandy Moore. It gets better every time I listen to it.
2. "Some Mad Hope" by Matt Nathanson. This CD isn't out until next month, but I'm so excited for it. It's criminal the way Matt Nathanson gets ignored by the mainstream media.
3. The Simpsons Movie. Only 10 days away!

Look for Chelsea Handler on VHI, show is called Chelsea Lately...show is not as funny as she is, but still better than most summer TV. Also, for pure train-wreck TV, Hey Paula on Bravo. And a book called "Come Back" by Claire Fontaine...couldn't put it down.

Version by Mark Ronson -- Covers of Coldplay, the Smiths, Kaiser Chiefs, Britney Spears (yes, Britney Spears) and more - plus some original tunes - wrapped up in a big Motown-sounding bow, with horns, a great party vibe, and Amy Winehouse, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Robbie Williams. The songs aren't even guilty pleasures, just absolute pleasures.

1) Transformers
2) Big Brother 8 - it's so bad, it's good.
3) Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson - Great for kids and adults!

1) DC Comics' new Minx line of graphic novels. Finally, the comics industry just *might* be moving towards publishing the occasional non-condescending comic book for girls (wow! What a concept!).

2) World War Z: Who knew that a B-movie concept (the zombie apocalypse) could be cold, hard, literary goodness?

3) Hot Fuzz on DVD: because this is a movie that demands repeated viewing. And viewing in slow motion. And freeze framing. Long live DVD.

1. Editors - An End Has A Start
2. Goodreads.com (like MySpace for bookworms)
3. The Superficial (.com) - Perez who?

1. Dirty Jobs--Quick, how many TV hosts have been willing to crawl through sewers? The spirited Mike Rowe lifts this odd concept of a reality series to heights of real-life comedic grandeur.

2. Live Free or Die Hard--A bald Bruce breaks bad in the one summer sequel that will actually meet your expectations.

3. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition--The wait for new Wii games got a lot easier with this definitive update of a modern gaming classic, now bolstered by immersive motion controls.

1) 30 Rock - Best sitcom on TV is to get even better with the news of a recurring guest appearance from Jerry Seinfeld.

2) Zeitgeist by Smashing Pumpkins - By no means their best work but something of a return to their harder roots.

3) The Simpsons Movie - "Spider Pig, Spider Pig, does whatever a Spider Pig does".
