Justice is served at 'Law & Order'

Linusr_l As regular PopWatchers are well aware, tracking the casting process over at NBC's Law & Order can be every bit as suspenseful as actually watching an episode of the venerable cops 'n' courtrooms series. Last we heard, the departure of real-life presidential hopeful Fred Thompson (a.k.a. on-screen D.A. Arthur Branch) had left the top "Law" seat open, while the supremely talented Jeremy Sisto was replacing rookie cop Milena Govich on the "Order" side of things. Well, the producers revealed two more twists to the developing tale today — one pretty predictable, the other a complete surprise, and each in its own way quite satisfying.

Obvious things first: Sam Waterston's A.D.A. Jack McCoy is indeed getting the well-earned promotion that rumor suggested was coming his way. In retrospect, he's really the only candidate who made any sense for the vacant D.A. job. Sure, this means no more closing-argument fireworks or outraged "Objection!"s from McCoy, but mature reflection was more his style lately, anyway. Waterston's character had served as a de facto elder statesman on the show for years now, and it'll be nice to see him taking on that role full-time. (One stray thought: D.A. is an elected position in New York, so does this mean we might get to see McCoy hit the campaign trail this fall — at the very time when Fred Thompson's non-fictional White House run starts going into high gear? How meta.)

But the really exciting news today is McCoy's replacement in the A.D.A. slot. Turns out the new prosecutor will be played by none other than Linus Roache (pictured) — one of Sisto's co-stars on Kidnapped, the fantastic thriller series that NBC callously canceled last fall. (NBC is currently burning off Kidnapped's final episodes, previously consigned to NBC.com, on late Sunday nights; I can't recommend highly enough that you sacrifice some Z's to check 'em out.)  In that show's roster of world-class character actors, Roache played an FBI agent who cooperated uneasily with Sisto's freelance badass on a high-stakes abduction case. Come to think of it, their relationship wasn't all that different from the one you might find between an uptight A.D.A. and a gritty homicide detective. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll never get to see a second season of Kidnapped, but I'll happily take this resurrection of sorts as a consolation prize.

I loved Kidnapped and got the full season on Netflix. I've noticed that this year's Law and Order features a number of the actors from Kidnapped - has anyone else noticed that? Not just Linus and Jeremy, but the weekly guest stars as well. Maybe Kidnapped's former casting director is over at L&O now? Anyone?

Oh, meow, meow, meow! I'm so glad we're getting Linus Roache instead of another interchangeable, utterly forgetable female assistant D.A. manniquin. I'll start watching again.

HEY! Can anyone tell me if the completed series of Kidnapped is out on DVD?

I readily admit to being a L&O fan..I didn't think Milena Govich was all that bad,but Jeremy Sisto, along with the rest of the fine cast in Six Feet Under is a remarkably skilled actor, and I am looking forward to his arrival on L&O..He will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to one of network television's best drama series.

I really enjoyed Kidnapped. I think that each season would have been Sisto handling a different kidnap case. It could have been great.

I am a L&O fanatic, I watch every week and sometimes catch a couple of reruns on TNT a day. It hasn't been the same since we lost Jerry/Lenny, but Sisto will be a major improvement over Ms. Govich. Sam/Jack deserves the promotion, but I hope he gets just as much airtime. He truly is the heart of the show and always a dependable hardcase on even the most slippery of criminals. It's hard to even remember when Michael Moriaity had the ADA job.

Kidnapped had no depth. I mean, was the whole purpose of the program to have an ongoing kidnapping through out three or four seasons? It would have been boring. Linus Roache is a fair actor but why does he look like the guy from "Airplane!" in that picture?

OperaGal Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 11:52 AM EST

Excellent news. I didn't watch Kidnapped so I don't know much about the acting chops of the new cast members, but I still say - UPGRADE! I had been a loyal fan of Law & Order for years, until this last season, when I abruptly stopped watching. I simply couldn't stand Milena Govich! I might actually watch the show again, now that her grating presence and terrible acting isn't blighting the entire TV screen each week.

I really liked Kidnapped. I was disappointed when they took it off the air. This is definitely a good development for L&O.

I loved him as Bruce Wayne's father. Small part, but left a big impression. I'm really excited to see what he'll do.

matchkitjohn Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 08:30 AM EST

Okay. Batman's dad! I recognized him from somewhere. The best change for the show is that it will be on Sunday after the football season. There will not be a lot of reruns and Jack getting the promotion makes sense. I stopped watching SVU when Stable became "Cop on the Edge!"

I've had a crush on Roache since Wings of the Dove. I'll definitely be watching.

Kidnapped was very good until the last two episodes...and that last episode was a total letdown. It kept you hanging on with good acting, interesting twists and turns and then boom! such a crappo ending.

carboni Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 12:44 AM EST

I remembered him as Batman's dad in the last Batman movie.

I agree with Jane. I've liked Linus Roache ever since Priest. And Sisto has been consistently strong in his performances. Both actors definitely stood out in Kidnapped - a slightly flawed but ultimately great and underappreciated series.

Beth Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 08:52 PM EST

I think these are fabulous casting choice -- both Sisto and Roach are very appealing actors (appealing in both talent and looks).

Terri Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 08:49 PM EST

can he play the part? never heard of him...........

Jane Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 07:50 PM EST

I've loved Linus Roache ever since I saw him in "Priest." This is the awsomest of choices.

Court Wed, Jul 18, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

Wow, maybe I'll watch L&O now. I've been a Sisto fan for years, and Roache is awesome. L&O: SVU has been the much better show for quite some time, as the original hasn't been interesting since Jerry Orbach left. This is good news.
