iPod inspection: What's on your cardio playlist?

Jul 9, 2007, 05:25 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: iPod inspection, Music, Richard Simmons

I need your help, PopWatchers. You see, last Wednesday, while downing my umpteenth cup of vacation gelato, I made a vow that when I got back home, I was going to return to working out a minimum of three days a week — no excuses. Trouble is, Mother Nature has decided to celebrate my commitment to exercise by delivering a crushing heat wave to the New York region. In other words, it's 95 degrees in the shade (and humid!) — and just the mere thought of physical activity is sending me to the emotional mojito bar. Clearly, the only thing that's going to prevent me from ditching the gym today is a killer cardio playlist, which I started working on during lunch today. Here's what I've got so far...

Amanda Ghost, "Filthy Mind"
The Breeders' "Cannonball"
The Butchies, "Send Me You"
B-52s, "Private Idaho"
Christina Aguilera, "Fighter"

Okay, so clearly I've only made it through 'C' in my music library (yes, C+C Music Factory has secretly made the cut... just don't tell anyone), but it's clear I need some help if I'm ever going to have abs like Daniel Craig. (Hey! I can dream!) So help a blogger out; channel your inner Richard Simmons (minus the hideous candycane shorts, please) and contribute to the ultimate cardio playlist in the comments section below.

Squeeze anyone?

Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

Sleze, sweetie, no workout playlist is complete if you don't have any dirty south bootyshake in your life! Sadly, much of it is shamefully misogynistic, and it makes me feel guilty for dancing with so much abandon. Here's a sampling to get you started:

Scrub Da Ground -- Splack Pack
Too Much Booty In Da Pants -- Soundmaster T
I Wanna Rock -- Luke
Tootsee Roll -- 69 Boyz

Stephanie T. Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

VNV kick butt! I remember one of their concerts about two years ago. The opening act (not Imperial Reaction who were awesome) was some dude playing a synthesizer while doing ridiculous dance. He looked like a bald Tony Little on a treadmill. He was dreadful yet hilarious. "You can do it!" lol!

Fire Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

Maybe I'm just resentful about being at the gym but I prefer some angry music when I work out...

Papa Roach(I'm surprised that no one mentioned them)
Evanescence
Linkin Park (Not so much their new one)
VNV Nation
Nightwish
Within Temptation
Seether
Adema
Thousand Foot Krutch
Allister
Dead Can Dance (Especially good warm up for belly dancers such as myself)
The Black Maria
The Hush Sound (Cool Down)
The Elektra soundtrack
The Punisher soundtrack (both bad movies with good music)
The Cursed sountrack
The Top Gun soundtack
The new Transformers soundtrack would probably be good too.

As I'm sure you can guess I'm one of those lame people who still uses a CD player rather than an MP3 player so I generally go with bands that are consistantly good for cardio rather than the ones that have a few really good songs. Good luck everyone, and thanks for the suggestions!

Chris Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

Great thread! I like songs that I feel like I discovered, that aren't top 40 hits but still are extremely motivating and make me want to RUN!

1. Battleflag by Low Fidelity Allstars (cannot stay still when this comes on)
2. Imitation Leather Jacket by H2SO4 (I wanna bounce up and down to this)
3. The Horror by RJD2 (Frankenstein-esque)

5. Aaj Mera Jee Kardaa (Today my heart desires) from the Monsoon Wedding soundtrack (A Bollywood classic. When I hear this one, I like to pretend that I'm one of those marathon runners who ran everywhere in Africa as a child)

pumpkinandy Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 11:52 AM EST

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but the theme song from "Casino Royale" (You Know My Name) is a great, great, great motivator.

Michelle Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:51 AM EST

Lots of great songs here that are also on my playlist - someone already mentioned "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That" by Robert Randolph & The Family Band ... it's a new favorite that really kicks my butt into gear when all I want to do is stop. "Push It" by Garbage is also good for those moments.

My running playlist includes a couple from the Rocky IV soundtrack - "No Easy Way Out" and "Hearts on Fire". They're about 30 minutes into the playlist and always do the trick - I just picture Rocky charging up that mountain. I don't care that it's supercheesy.

Em Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 08:45 AM EST

Jenny Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 08:24 AM EST

This thread is AWESOME. I love the fact that so many people here agree that gym music has to be cheesy and FAST. :) I have a whole bunch of new songs to throw on my shuffle to keep me moving. One more thing, believe it or not the soundtrack to Legally Blonde 2 has a bunch of good choices as well. Particularly if you want some "girl power" music (actual feminism not included).

Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 08:12 AM EST

Kanye--"Workout Plan"
Girls Aloud--"Love Machine"
Melanie C--"Let's Love"

GingerCat Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 07:55 AM EST

Wow, just about everything on my list has already been named. I guess I'll just back up other people's choices by listing some of mine:

"Since U Been Gone"--Kelly Clarkson
"Fighter"--Christina Aguilera
"Get Right" and "Gonna Be Alright"--Jennifer Lopez
"Don't Cha"--Pussycat Dolls
"They Say Vision"--Res
"Trouble"--Pink
"Honey"--Mariah Carey
"Check On It"--Destiny's Child
"London Calling"--The Clash

Anne Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 07:37 AM EST

Sigh, bring on the cheese and the metal: 3 songs from the rocky (best of) soundtrack; 3 songs from metallica (black album); marky mark; spicegirls; Hot in Herre; Rocksteady; Junglelove; Rio/Reflex (showing my age with the last three); Brass Monkey; GNR (sadly, nothing from Chinese Democracy)Yeah/Caught up-Usher; Come on (Ride that train)-loads of laughable songs, but I love them, esp on the treadmill.

Louise Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 07:27 AM EST

You've got to have Lovefool by the Cardigans.

David Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 03:03 AM EST

Dear Michael, having seen your uh...features/physique/musculature and face via Idolatry, I am really of the opinion that you yourself DO need to channel your inner Richard Simmons PLUS the hideous candycane shorts! So stop aiming for Daniel Craig looks but go for Richard Simmons. Yey!

jojo from the block Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 01:43 AM EST

I have a lot of the songs that people have listed already, but I'll just add a few favorites that really get me going. I do a lot of cardio, so I like songs with a high BPM count that are heavy on the drums. Me likes the bass.

"Cover Me" (the remix from the Telegram CD) Bjork. It will kick your butt if you try to keep up.

Cheap Trick's Greatest Hits album does it for me, especially "She's Tight."

From the 70's Mon, Jul 9, 2007 at 09:14 PM EST

Here's the deal - go to iTunes and buy your favorite tunes from the 70's. I recommend anything from the Jacksons (after the move to Columbia), Parliment, Funkadelic, Heatwave and Prince. Here is a sample of what I use ( a few of the Prince tunes are from the 80's):

Diana Ross - The Boss
Anita Ward - Ring My Bell
Not Sure of Artist - Funkin' for Jamaica
Heatwave - Grooveline
Jackson Five - Hum along and dance
Prince - Baby I'm a Star, I would die 4 U, KISS, Delirious, Dirty Mind
KC and the Sunshine Band - Get Down Tonight
Parliment - One Nation Under a Groove, Flashlight

You may think it's cheesy but all of these tunes keep you moving!

Pippin Mon, Jul 9, 2007 at 08:28 PM EST

I dig the entire soundtrack to Bend It Like Beckham. I also love to groove to The Cure's version of Purple Haze. Awesome!

I definitely second the Basement Jaxx. Especially any song off Kish Kash. Throw two Timbaland tracks on there too: "Throw it On Me" off Shock Value (with the Hives) and Brandy's "Turn it Up." To round it out, add Kula Shaker's "Hush" cover, Mark Ronson's "Ooh Wee", "She Wants to Move" by N.E.R.D. and, finally, because it actually does make you run fast, "La La" by Ashlee Simpson.

There is no way anyone's cardio playlist should not include Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone". It is the ultimate Kelly song and always gets me in the mood.

Jack Fear Mon, Jul 9, 2007 at 04:39 PM EST

(Sorry 'bout the double post - it occurred to me in mid-posting that a-n-a-l might not make it through EW's naughty-word filters...!)

Amanda Mon, Jul 9, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

Slezak, you MUST try LCD Soundsystem's "45:33". Nike commissioned him to do a 45 minute-long track for runners... it has a warm-up period, a driving middle, and a 7 minute cool-down at the end. The beat gets incrementally faster as it goes on, which pushes you to push yourself. I find that a 45 minute run flies by if I'm listening to 45:33.

Jack Fear Mon, Jul 9, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

Practical advice for compiling any kind of exercise mix: you're gonna need a beat counter. I use a free one I got at mixmeister.com - it analyzes your mp3 collection and gives you the beats per minute for each song. Then you can construct your mix to stay constant, to speed up, whatever works for you. I've got different playlists and different tempos for different machines (ellipticals, stairmaster, treadmill etc.). I'm pretty OCD about it. It's pretty funny, actually, because you would never peg me as somebody who's way into going to the gym: I *am*, however, way into music.

I will say that new Eve song "Tambourine" has really spiced up my workout lately. But it's Hall & Oates "You Make My Dreams Come True" that always gets the job done. That sonds just so inspirational!
