Cast the next Harry Potter movie

Jul 10, 2007, 09:20 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: Film, Harry Potter

Staunton_lPopWatch reader Lisa Wood writes:

I was watching An Awfully Big Adventure on IFC, and I realized how much I enjoy Alun Armstrong, who plays Uncle Vernon (how strangely fitting when you keep reading) in the film. It made me wonder "Why hasn't he been cast in Harry Potter yet?" He would make a great Death Eater.  It seems like they pick the best of the best British actors for those films. Then I thought, "Who else has been overlooked by Harry Potter?" And I thought of Alun's costar in Bleak House, Charles Dance. Anyhow I thought this was a job for PopWatch, and not myself. So maybe when Harry Potter's new movie comes out it could be a discussion point on your blog. I would like to hear your ideas. Love you guys!

Thanks, Lisa! That's a terrific idea, since there are lots of British thespians who, inexplicably, have yet to appear in a Potter picture. Some I'd like to see hanging around at Hogwarts include Samantha Morton, Richard E. Grant, Clive Owen, Daniel Craig, Helen Mirren, and Eileen Atkins. I'd have included Vera Drake's Imelda Staunton, too, but she's made it into the new Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as Dolores Umbridge (pictured, left, with Potter vets Emma Thompson and Maggie Smith).

Who else would you like to see acting in the Potter saga? (Sorry, Yanks, it's Brits only.) And what roles should they play? Hurry with your suggestions, since you've only got two movies left.

kimberly askew Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 09:30 PM EST

my family and i just rented the order oF the phoenix. i just want to thank everyone involved in the making of such a wonderful series of movies every movie that is made is fresh and exciting unlike other movies that are made after chapters as long as each movie is made to keep you guessing and the people involved keep pleasing the readers and the audience with all their hard work ..I CONGUALTE EVERYONE INVOLVED WITH GREAT SUCCESS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR KEEPING US STILL ENTERTAINED AND WANTING MORE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. WISH MANY MORE SUCCESS.. A SMALL FAMILY IN PENNSYLVANIA..EXCELLENT JOB!

imogen Mon, Oct 15, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

i think
hugh laurie as muggle primisister
bill nighy as scrimgeour
nicole kidman as narcissa
helen mirren as neville's grandmother
!!! perfect you can't go wrong...

Tomás Tue, Oct 2, 2007 at 06:58 PM EST

John Travoltra should be Slughorn

Jim Fri, Sep 14, 2007 at 07:36 AM EST

I think Mike McShane would be a much better horace slughorn.

farmercyst Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 05:42 AM EST

Matt Lucas for Slughorn - have you seen how well he played Toad of Toad Hall?

Lucy Tue, Sep 4, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

Tom Baker for Slughorn! He'd be perfect- he can do pompous and comic relief- and what a voice!!

lucy Tue, Aug 28, 2007 at 05:33 AM EST

hugh grant would be a perfect muggle priminster and nicole kidman as narcissa

George Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

I would like to nominate my best friend for the role of Eileen Prince! Where do I send a pic of her to??

emma Fri, Aug 17, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

i'd like to see anne hathaway as narcissa and i DEFENTLY want hugh grant to play the muggle primemister.

Dempsey Sun, Aug 12, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

i think to keep it british and as a bit of a laugh coz in love actually he pulled it off so funnily Hugh Grant for Muggle priminister

Eileen Sun, Aug 5, 2007 at 08:48 PM EST

After seeing "Children of Men," I think Sir Michael would make a perfect Mundungus Fletcher.

Mel Sat, Jul 21, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

And Hans Matheson as Tom Riddle

Mel Sat, Jul 21, 2007 at 11:27 PM EST

I know it's been said before but...
Hugh Laurie for Muggle Prime Minister
Bob Hoskins for Slughorn
I personally would love Anna Friel for Narcissa Malfoy. or Caroline Goodall
And Bill Nighy for Scrimgeor

TM_NYC Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 10:39 PM EST

Dame Judi Dench = Umbridge. Imedla Staunton is great casting, but Dame Judi, whoa...you couldn't go wrong! She has the humor, the mystery, the eyes, the "zing". It will be good as cast as it is now, but Dame Judi really really really needs to be cast in one of the HP's before it's over for sure! Somebody get a commitee together or write a letter! In the mean while, here's to another GREAT Harry Potter triumph to come!!!

Fred S Fri, Jul 20, 2007 at 06:59 AM EST

Albert Finney was who I pictured when I read Slughorn but Hoskins or Cox are of course just fine. Geniuses all. Peter O'Toole or Jeremy Irons for Marvolo. Nighy and McKellen can play anything!

Ann Tue, Jul 17, 2007 at 11:51 AM EST

I agree that Jeremy Northam should be an addition in the upcoming films. I'm a huge fan and would have loved to have seen him as Sirius. (Gary Oldman has done a great job though, so no complaints here). I agree with Tilda Swinton as Narcissa. She plays 'evil' very well.

Sat, Jul 14, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

Burn Gorman- Also from Bleak House, would be a wonderful choice. He's currently on Torchwood, but in Bleak House, he played his character, Mr. Guppy, as a Johnny Depp lookalike. He would fit right in with the whimsical nature of Harry Potter, even if he played a villian.
Anna Maxwell Martin- Could play the younger version of Lily Potter.
Lloyd Owen- Little known in the States, older, but still with soft mannerisms. He'd be a better, more fatherly Lupin.
Matthew MacFayden- Overlooked by Americans, except in Pride and Prejudice

Don Collignon Thu, Jul 12, 2007 at 09:49 AM EST

Tom Baker -- don't know what part, but how can you miss with a tall, bombastic guy like that? Derek Jacobi would be another coup.

tia77 Thu, Jul 12, 2007 at 07:35 AM EST

Jeremy Irons would make a perfect Fenrir Greyback.

Alex Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:21 PM EST

Ooh, I absolutely second Christian Bale as Tom Riddle.

Sarah Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 10:10 PM EST

The person who said Hugh Laurie has it right. He'd fit perfectly into Hogwarts.

I also think that that Freddie Highmore kid from Finding Neverland could bring the goods. And, for some added prettyness: Jude Law. And maybe Anthony Hopkins as a Death Eater. Or that guy from Shawn of the Dead for some comedy. Or is he Australian?

I'm not sure who all these actors would play but that's ok. I like Gary Oldman the best. He's my favorite in the cast.

abi Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 09:40 PM EST

I've been on the "Bob Hoskins for Slughorn" train since I read HBP, and I like the suggestions of either Tim Curry or Hugh Grant for the Muggle Prime Minister, and Hugh Laurie for Scrimgeour.

I think it's a little superfluous at this point to try casting Regulus Black, seeing as 1.) we have no idea what he's supposed to be like, and 2.) we don't even know if he'll show up in the series at all!

Also, just a note: Australian is not the same as British. They both have accents, but seriously, not the same.

Chad Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 07:45 PM EST

I think Vinnie Jones as Fenrir Greyback would be pretty great...the guy just needs to be a hulking and intimidating british brute...who better?

Laura Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

Natalia Tena plays Tonks. She's not in the film much, but she does a great job. Jim Broadbent, as mentioned below, would be perfect as Slughorn.

bootsycolumbia Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

I haven't seen the movie yet (I'll have to wait for the weekend), but is Tonks in the movie? Kate Winslet would be great as Tonks. Whoever suggested Hugh Grant as the Muggle Prime Minister: I agree! That would be a lot of fun. Rufus Scrimgeour is an imposing guy, so Brian Cox would be perfect.

iread=) Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

Joely Richardson as Narcissa Malfoy.

Andrea D Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

Daniel Day-Lewis as Greyback. I love Brain Cox for Scrimgeour.

RedRidingHood Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

People who can act are necessary for these movies? Well, I guess that should kick Radcliffe, Watson and Grint to the curb then.

MIMI Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

Even before the first movie was released, I have always said that Sir Anthony Hopkins should play Lord Voldemort in full "Hanible Lector" mode.....the epitome of evil.

Carol Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:58 PM EST

Hugh Laurie would be a classy, charismatic addition to this series in any role, with or without scruff or limp.

Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

Christian Bale as Tom Riddle. Cillian Murphy (I know he is too old, but still) as Hogwarts-aged Snape.
Judy Dench as Neville's grandmother.

Mags Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

How about Clive Owen as Regulus Black?

Mags Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

Timothy Dalton should be a Death Eater. He was so villainous in "Hot Fuzz."

To RedRidingHood Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Jude Law! Are you kidding me? Isn't it important to have someone who can actually act play that role!?! What next, Sienna Miller as Narcissa!?! Good god.

Dan Neitzel Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

I was shocked to hear the casting of Order of the phoenix as I thought that Judi Dench would be Umbridge and really wanted Kate winslet for tonks

Happy K Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:10 PM EST

Tim Curry should be the Prime Minister.

Rebecca Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

I haven't seen Sean Bean on this list - he could stand there and read the phone book and i'd buy a ticket.

Jai. Deisel Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

I realize he turned down the part of Severus Snape (d'oh!) to do Planet of the Apes, but I still think Tim Roth would be an excellent addition in any capacity.

TheJester Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

I'm actually all about Albert Finney as Slughorn. Jim Broadbent for me is a little too whimpy in a way; Bob Hoskins isn't physically imposing enough.

Diane Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

Derik Jacobi as the new Minister of Magic

Jake Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

Bring back John Cleese as Nick!!!!!

Jake Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

Slughorn: Bob Hoskins
Narcissa: Naomi Watts

Bob G Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

When Richard Harris died, I felt Christopher Lee should have been cast as Dumbledor. Would still like to see him turn up in one of the Potter pictures.

Jo Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

I always imagined Clive Owen as Sirius Black, although Gary Oldman is brilliant.

aubie822 Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

Bill Nighy as Rufus. I can't believe he hasn't been in any of the movies yet!

GeeMoney Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, Rupert Everett or Joseph Fiennes.

Cee Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:18 AM EST

I would love to see Diana Rigg too. It would be great if they could get Tony Blair (Prime Minister). Sean Connery could have been great but he said no. But I need eye candy. I don't care if they get a walk on role...Orlando Bloom and Ewan McGregor. Sorry but kids arent for me. Too bad we have to pick just Britts.

Can you imagine Harrison Ford, Johnny Depp, Sam Jackson (sorry it's Sam for crying out loud), Matt Damon, oh and my nephew is here with me and he says Yoda would be awesome (go ahead and laugh).

It is going to be interesting to see the final 3 (OOTP, HBP, and DH), but I still have my books and imagination.

Daniel Fidler Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Jim Broadbent as Horace Slughorn.

RedRidingHood Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 11:00 AM EST

Besides always believing that Ewan McGregor should have been Remus Lupis, I also think the perfect (and properly AGED) person to play Sirius was always Jude Law. Sirius is supposed to be sexy, and sorry, but Gary Oldman has never done it for me in the sexy department. I think Rufus Sewell as someone, maybe Regulus Black, would be good, though we don't know if we'll have any need to see "R.*.B.", yet.

Sue Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 10:48 AM EST

There are a lot of people from Rome (Pullo as a rather dazed Muggle Prime Minister, for example) who could work in Harry Potter. Simon Woods is great, too bad they've probably cast all the Weasleys. Too bad there's no older Weasely sister, because I like Kelly Riley (from Pride and Prejudice and L'Auberge Espagnole), too.
Rufus: Ciaran Hinds, James Fox, Ian McKellen, Stephen Rea, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson...but Bill Nighy is probably the best choice
Regulus Black: James McAvoy, Callum Blue from The Tudors and Dead Like Me
Young Voldemort: Cillian Murphy
Tom Riddle Sr: Hugh Dancy, Henry Cavill from The Tudors, Rupert Everett or Hugh Grant if he were younger
Hugh Grant would also make an amusing Muggle Prime Minister
Slughorn: Anthony Hopkins, Stephen Fry
Voldemort's Mum: Emilia Fox
Shove Rachel Weisz in there somewhere.
Maybe they should just film some sort of British acting awards ceremony and use it as background footage.

I love Kristin Scott Thomas as Narcissa!

Heather Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as young Voldemort would be perfect.

Kate Winslet would be great as anything or Hugh Laurie (although I doubt he'd be able to considering he's always in the US shooting House)

jcarla Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

Since he's not doing much these days (yes, yes, he's the Middle East envoy but no one will listen to him anyway) Tony Blair can reprise his role as Muggle Prime Minister!

ceej Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 10:38 AM EST

Bill Nighy(?) from Pirates 2+3 and Love Actually as.... anyone... maybe a Inferei?

Beeb Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

Rufus Sewell...as Regulus Black, maybe?

crs Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 09:51 AM EST

Andy Serkis as Marvolo Gaunt (or the son); he's physically adept enough to portray such an odd character. Alun Armstrong somewhere. Since this is set in the 90s, Michael Sheen as the PM would be a cheeky choice.

Kelly B Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

For Rufus Scrimgeon I nominate ... STING.

Kevin Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

This is great...I was just thinking about this while rereading The Half-Blood Prince. Please, please tell me some Warner Bros. hot-shot will read this and follow my advice...because no one, NO ONE other than Bob Hoskins should play Prof. Slughorn. And I think Brian Cox would make a great Scrimgeour.

Peter Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 09:21 AM EST

Brian Cox. There's gotta be a place for him. Michael Sheen as Muggle prime minister would be hilarious. Broadbent as Slughorn is a no brainer.

sync Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 09:09 AM EST

I would add my vote in for Hugh Laurie. Who ever suggested Rufus Scrimgeour for him - that is perfect!

Patti Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 08:54 AM EST

Since the director will be David Yates again, I suggest he reunite his State of Play principals for the Gaunt family - Bill Nighy, Kelly Macdonald and John Simm. Perfect!

Missy Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 08:53 AM EST

Since day one of the first movie I've been trying to figure out a way for them to get Jeremy Northam in there, in any capacity. So there's my vote. Maybe....Regulus? That would work.

I also second any votes for Hugh Laurie and Christopher Eccleston. I've always pictured Imelda Staunton as Umbridge, so I'm quite excited to see the "finished result" tonight.

Jess Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 08:33 AM EST

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as young Voldemort (they've already confirmed that the original Tom Riddle from HP2 won't be back)
Samantha Morton as Narcissa Malfoy
Jim Broadbent as Slughorn
Daniel Craig as Regulus Black
Romola Garai as Merope Gaunt (Voldemort's mother)
and... Freddie Highmore as young Tom Riddle (when Dumbledore retrieves him from the orphanage). It'd be nice to see him play an evil character.

Sadie Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 08:33 AM EST

I LOVE this! Tilda Swinton for Narcissa Malfoy. Daniel Day Lewis as Marvolo Riddle.

And I agree with many of the posters below with getting Kate Winslet, Colin Firth and Clive Owen in some capacity.

Sarah C Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 08:04 AM EST

Ditto Jasper on Daniel Day-Lewis as the perfect Sirius. I always pictured Brenda Blethyn as Umbridge. For the next two movies, I'd like to see Colin Firth, Matthew Goode, and Helen Mirren as Neville's grandmother.

Louise Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 07:06 AM EST

I don't care if she's not British. Who else can do that pale, wispy, fragile thing better than her?

Louise Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 07:03 AM EST

I think Michelle Pfeiffer would be fantastic as Narcissa Malfoy.

Renee Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 05:28 AM EST

Hugh Laurie has to be in the next Harry Potter movie and I know who he could play: Rufus Scrigmore (I probably spelled that wrong). He is the new Minister of Magic. He has a waking cane and everything. PERFECT.

noodles Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 03:58 AM EST

I'd love to see Alison Doody (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) plays 'Mrs. Malfoy' (Jason Isaacs wife). The "Potter" series needs a little beauty and sex, and she's still very lovely, now in her 40's.

kriselda jarnsaxa Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 03:32 AM EST

Well, hoping that Irish counts as "Brit" enough, my vote would be for Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. They could make him an umbrella/bumbershoot stand for all I care! Just make sure he's in a well lit corner of a popular set, eh? LOL

Chaddogg Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:39 AM EST

Uh, excuse me? How come no one has mentioned Colin Firth? Perhaps (in Book 7, maybe?) as Regulus Black?

Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant should be given some roles, anywhere. (Gervais as Mundungus would be inspired)....and we might be in need of an Aberforth Dumbledore, no? Peter O'Toole?

If we need a red-headed to play an older Weasley brother, my vote is with Simon Pegg.

David Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:15 AM EST

If you ask me, Clive Owen should have played Sirius.

Jakeem Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 01:11 AM EST

Dame Diana Rigg, of course! It's the least they can do for her since Daniel Radcliffe popped her in the head with a prophylactic in Ricky Gervais' "Extras"!

Jason Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:32 AM EST

I second Bob Hoskins for Slughorn. Either him or Jim Broadbent. If they ever have to recast Cornelius Fudge, Jim Broadbent would be perfect. When I read the books, and even when I'm remembering the movies, I only see Jim Broadbent when I think of Fudge.

Mariah Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:10 AM EST

they could fit Matthew Macfayden in there somewhere, I'm sure of it

k Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:04 AM EST

come to think of it, ANYONE from Bleak House would be fantastic... what superb acting all around in that series!

Lisa Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 11:38 PM EST

OMG, of course Hugh Laurie, in any capacity whatsoever!

Desmodus Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 10:48 PM EST

Ian McShane as Fenrir Greyback, most definitely. And Cary Elwes as Tom Riddle, Sr. Joseph Fiennes as the young Tom Riddle, Jr.

HipDeepInPie Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 10:17 PM EST

You can vote on the Half-Blood Prince cast online at http://imaginecasting.com/imagine/topPicks.php?Movie_ID=1303

Benjh Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 10:14 PM EST

Sir Richard Attenbourough ought to be in one of the movie. Why not as Scrimgeour? "lion-like features, with silver hair" says Rowling....

Jennie Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 10:03 PM EST

And I agree with CV, too - Peter O'Toole ought to have played DD...

Jennie Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 10:02 PM EST

Bill Nighy, Hugh Laurie, and Kate Winslet. I don't care how small a role they have, just bring them in!

CV Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:45 PM EST

They missed a trick not casting Peter O'Toole for Dumbledore.

How about Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry?

NC Viewer Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:37 PM EST

Bring on Kate Winslet in any capacity, please!

Matthew Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:35 PM EST

Michael Sheen from "The Queen." I don't care who, but he's a great actor and should be on the Brits-in-waiting list for the next two Harry Potter movies.

Jasper Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:22 PM EST

Sacha Baron Cohen or Ricky Gervais would've been inspired casting for Mundungus.

Jasper Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:20 PM EST

Judi Dench as Neville's Grandma would be good but if that part even makes the film it's already been cast. Since my dream of Daniel Day Lewis as Sirius has been crushed (though Oldman is growing on me)I'd like to see him as a Death Eater or something. Jude Law might make a fun Muggle Prime Minister.

Boots Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:11 PM EST

Tom Hollander as Eldred Worple

RedRidingHood Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:10 PM EST

Alan Cumming would make a fabulous death eater. He'd make a great Marvolo or Morfin Gaunt.

Roon Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 09:05 PM EST

We've already had one Doctor Who (David Tennant as Barty Crouch Jr.), why not another? How about Christopher Eccleston as maybe Marvolo Gaunt?

wildecat Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 08:56 PM EST

There was some discussion on mugglenet.com that Bob Hoskins would make a great Slughorn (after he was on a talk show with JK Rowling), but I'd rather see him as Mundungus Fletcher. I thought they'd cast Judi Dench as Umbridge, but Staunton should be great, too. How about Kristin Scott Thomas as Narcissa Malfoy? She's rather haughty, no?

Nix Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 08:56 PM EST

I just thought of something somewhat unorthodox last night while re-reading (re-skipping -- Rowling needs an editor) "Half-Blood Prince": Damian Lewis as Rufus Scrimgeour. I know, I know, a little young, but I think it might work. Especially since I doubt he'll be young enough for Bill Weasley, though he's redheaded enough.

Susan Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

I think Jim Broadbent would be great as Professor Slughorn
