Rowling answers 'Deathly Hallows' Burning Questions

Jul 26, 2007, 12:03 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Books, Harry Potter, Morning Madness

Hallows_l If you haven't finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and intend to, you better not have watched Today this morning, which featured the first of Meredith Vieira's two-part sitdown with author J.K. Rowling. PopWatch would like to congratulate Today both on the big "get" — and for not drowning Rowling in the same smoke effects they used on poor Daniel Radcliffe when he stopped by to promote Order of the Phoenix. (He kindly referred to his trick-or-treated-out set as "incredibly magical.")

After the jump, we run through Rowling's answers to some burning Hallows questions, including the details she left out of the epilogue. SERIOUS SPOILER ALERT: Stop reading now if you haven't finished the book.

  • Okay, so if you're still reading this post... you know that Harry Potter lived. What jobs do Harry, Ron, and Hermione hold 19 years after the final battle with Voldemort? Rowling told Vieira that Harry and Ron now work in the Auror Department of the Ministry of Magic, while Hermione is in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. No word yet on Ginny Potter's profession. (Oh, you know she took his name).
  • Would Snape have still helped Harry if he hadn't felt unrequited love for Harry's mother? Rowling said no way. More interestingly, she balked when Vieira asked her whether Snape was always intended to be a "hero." Rowling said she doesn't seem him as a "hero." He's brave, she said, but he's also spiteful and a bully.
  • Which passage made Rowling sob the most while she was writing it? Chapter 34: Harry's walk to his then-certain death in the forest. (Was anyone not sobbing while they read it? Christ. And you know you'll cry in the movie theater, too. Just accept it now.)
  • Which character was supposed to die but didn't? Mr. Weasley. Rowling said she actually meant to kill him off in Year 5, but couldn't bear it. Maybe on Part Two of Vieira's interview, airing Friday, we'll find out why Rowling didn't feel as strongly about Fred...

Hate how she continues to downplay Serverus Snape. I agree with the guy who wrote an article which said Snape was the only one with some form of major internal moral struggle and that the story should have focused on him. I was optimistic that Rowling would have picked up on it. Unfortunatley though, she didn't, and the book ended predictably with no suprises and now she is even saying Snape isn't a hero. Sigh...

johnnie Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

i crieded when harry was walking toward his death. and i also cried when fred died. and i totally admired snape for loving lily potter. and snape will always be my fav character. in memory of who all died rumored 71 ppl in the magicl world dide. r.i.p

No Brand Woman Mon, Jul 30, 2007 at 08:52 AM EST

Oh, and also, I think my favorite part of the book was ch. 33 "The Prince's Tale". I knew that he had a thing for Lily and it was just so interesting to read this part. James and the other Marauders are mentioned a lot in the books, but you never really got to see much of Lily so not only was this a good look at Snape, but it really shined the light on her as well. I've never been a Snape fan, but I'm glad he got the chance to tell his story.

No Brand Woman Mon, Jul 30, 2007 at 08:49 AM EST

I agree that Umbridge should have died a horrible, painful death in the book, but I do have to agree that freshwater's idea of her having to work under Hermione would be awesome. I would love to see her kicked around. There needs to be an ammendment to the book where she somehow gets what's coming to her.
The deaths in this book that got to me the most: Hedwig, Dobby, and Fred. I can't think about Fred w/out tearing up now. I was upset by the death of Lupin and Tonks, but I was more angry that they threw themselves into the fight when they had a kid at home. But then, I felt their fate was sealed when Harry was made the godfather.

freshwater Sat, Jul 28, 2007 at 09:15 PM EST

E, regarding your wish for a long, painful death for Dolores Umbridge....I have an alternative that might give you some comfort: Umbridge is appointed to be Undersecretary for the new Department for the Welfare of all Magical Persons/Creatures, reporting directly to her superior and head of the department, Mrs. Hermione Granger-Weasely. This way, the nasty kitty lover can spend the rest of her life overseeing the changes in magical laws relating to centaurs, werewolves, giants, etc. **evil snicker** So....what do you think?

kats Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:42 AM EST

Mark S - I see the ties into Nazi Germany as well, it's hard not to. All the same, I like to separate them as much as I can. I get more enjoyment out of it that way ; )

Mark S Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

"Rani~ Keep in mind that Voldemort is not a pure blood either. His father was a muggle. Always found that kind of interesting...."

Well it plays into the Nazi analogies that are all over Deathly Hallows (and to a lesser extent earlier books): Voldemort takeover being done through subterfuge rather than a clear coup; the deatheaters being like the Nazi leadership; the nature of the persecution of the muggle born wizards and witches (and contempt for the muggles) - the statue at the Ministry is a very Nazi like image. While the facts indicate that Hitler had no Jewish blood it has certainly been the subject of much speculation even in his day and to a degree some of his actions were definitely influenced by his fear that he may have had Jewish blood.

Crookshanks Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 10:01 AM EST

This is one time that I hope they do change the ending of the movie from the book's ending. Ditch the epilogue (seeing them 19 years older would just be weird) and show us more of what happened after the battle. Maybe JKR could help write it. IMO, the book ended too abruptly.

Jenny P Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 09:53 AM EST

I haven't read through the comments but I had a thought while in bed last night--now that Harry no longer bears a part of the soul of Voldemort, is he still a parselmouth? Further more, wouldn't it be interesting if the magic Harry had was only a result of the extremely potent and talented magic that Voldemort gave to him in the form of a Horcrux. What if Harry was just a mediocre wizard, and only did so well because of the evil inside of him?

That's, of course, just a "what if," but it would have been an interesting thing for Rowling to explore.

kats Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 09:18 AM EST

Rani~ Keep in mind that Voldemort is not a pure blood either. His father was a muggle. Always found that kind of interesting....

Ana Maria Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

...I started sobbing when I read about the goodbyes between the Dursleys and Harry; when Dudley tells Harry "I don't think you're a waste of space"...wow...to me, the book was perfect, awesome, epic, everything I hoped it would be, and more...

Dee Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 08:28 AM EST

Shannon, I'm totally with you. I absolutely SOBBED when I read the Godric's Hollow chapter. I'd been waiting for Harry to make a visit to Godric's Hollow for about 3 books now. It just felt like something he needed to do, to me. It was touching and heartbreaking.

June8 Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 04:21 AM EST

I didn't like Harry dissing Sirius and naming his son Severus instead. After worshipping Sirius for 3 years, he does not even name his kid after him? It could well have been James Sirius Potter.

Shannon Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 01:14 AM EST

I didn't cry during Chapter 34, but I did get a mounting tension headache.
(Anyone's head ever hurt reading the books? I mean, Harry gets so many headaches it's almost a headache in itself.) After I finished the chapter; however, it completely went away. Whew. I did get teary-eyed reading the Godric's Hollow chapter.
Didn't that get anyone? No one's mentioned that! Harry starts crying and Hermione grabs his hand...and then...that wreath. Oh man. I'm going to lose it again.
I was pleased with Harry's show of emotion in this book. Crying's never been his speciality and I always thought it should. I was all for his fits of rage in book 5; quite cathartic, but toward the end, I thought he should've cried a bit more just to balance it out. Especially in Dumbledore's office. I wanted him to scream with rage, throw things, and then cry. Ah well, that's something he did in secret.
End of thought jumble.

Rani Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:55 PM EST

So, what made Snape choose being a Death Eater over respecting Lily? And how can he be a Death Eater if he is a half-blood if they are all about blood purity?

Caren Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:26 PM EST

I would have added on more thing to the epiloge. It would have been cool to see Dudley there putting his kid on the train. He did make up w/ Harry and magic is in his blood line.
What do you think of that?

Joanna Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:01 PM EST

First of all, reading what everyone has already wrote is making me squeal with excitement not to mention also very hard to breathe because everyone is voicing what I've been thinking in my head! I overslept and missed JKR on Today. Dang it! But what I want to know is what happened during those 19 years. This is even worse than when they did the whole "5 months later" crap on the season 4 premiere of the o.c. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! And I'm SURE I'm not the only one! And to what some people have wrote about a 4 or 5 hour movie: LET'S TOTALLY DO IT! Because it totally pisses me off when the details are all scrambled around, not explained (not that any of us need it since we've read the books -- shout out to all my fellow nerds!), or not even included. Oh, and I would TOTALLY be willing to sit in a theater for 4-5 hours (or even the entire DAY) in order to get the GREATEST DETAILED FILLED EXPERIENCE HUMANLY POSSIBLE (for once with a Harry Potter movie) as I sit and cry my eyes out!

Jonathan Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:38 PM EST

Oh, I so agree with expanding the movies.

Wouldn't it be great to have movies that told the real story from the books, instead of just "Vignettes from Harry Potter, Vol. 6 & 7?"

wildecat Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 09:03 PM EST

I'm a little disappointed that Harry works for the Ministry. I really thought he'd become the DADA teacher at Hogwarts, especially since that's the only place he ever considered "home." Ruby, how can you say Harry didn't like teaching? In Book 5, he really got into it with Dumbledore's Army--planning lessons, feeling such pride in his friend's accomplishments--seems like a natural to me. Of course, if he did, JKR couldn't have the poetic image of him seeing his kids off at the station, so maybe that's why she made that choice. I also thought it would be cool if Ron went to work with George at the joke shop--George definitely needs a partner after losing Fred (WHY, JKR, WHY?!?!?!) I hated her killing off Remus and Tonks, too, until I saw that it gave her a nice juxtaposition with having Teddy living a much happier life than Harry ever did as an orphan. Chapter 34 WRECKED me...along with Snape's "Look at me" so he could see Lily's eyes one more time before he died...*SOB!*

E Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 07:04 PM EST

Did I miss some detail in the book, or did Rowling also not put in what happened to that horrible hag Dolores Umbridge? I was hoping to see a really good description of her long and painful demise!

anne Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 06:36 PM EST

Yes, I cried, A good bit. But I was disappointed with the Epilogue. One, because JK does not tell us the professions etc. Second, and it is confession time, because I secretly hoped that Harry and Luna would end up together in the end.

Klapaucius Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

I agree with Namar: We want movie 6 and 7 at least 3hrs long.
WE WANT THEM LOOOOOONNNNGGGG!!!!
PEACE!

Namar Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:12 PM EST

I liked the book, some parts bothered me like the middle part of them moving that was like 200 pages long! overall it was the best, the darkest, most action and complex book of them all

I HOPE THE 6th and 7th MOVIES ARE AT LEAST 2 hours and 50 MINUTES LONG!!!

come one we want em lonG!!!!

donner Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

"Dork" - do you remember in Chamber of Secrets when the hat is dropped by Fawkes - its empty..but when Harry NEEDED the sword, it materializes out of thin air...Its a Gryffindor sword, and can be summoned by any Gryffindor who's in need of it, as Harry was during Chamber...Neville needed the sword, the hat was there (on his head, on fire) and when he needed it, it materialized...it probably just disappeared from Gringotts...I believe the hat was also from Godric Gryffindor, but I don't remember that point...

does that make sense???

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

Skaetur~ Do you mean Mr. Weasley in favor of Fred, or just in general?

Skaetur Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

3 days, and 2 hours. I waited two years to be entertained for three days and two hours. I liked it, but now I'm ready for the encyclopedia. and btw she should have killed Mr. Weasly. That is all.

Klapaucius Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

I was hoping J.K. Rowling would have made Harry and Hermione brother and sister. That would have been awesome because you know, they work so great together.

Sadie Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:35 PM EST

Wow, can I get a congratulations (along with the posters after me who posted links to the interview wrap-up) for posting this to the OTHER Harry Potter thread this morning? Just saying, Mandi, this post practically wrote itself.

Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:28 PM EST

Why not film the book as two parts of the same movie. The first could end after they escape from the Malfoy's and the second can begin over the grave of Dobby. They could release the first part before Thanksgiving and the second before Christmas. Ca-ching and give them time to put in all the things they forgot to put in before (Where's Dobby been for three films???)

Stef Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

re: the Gryffindor sword in the sorting hat for Neville. Remember that it can only be retrieved by an act of great bravery. Neville showed this by standing up to Voldemort in front of everyone, running out of the crowd to defy him. This is what allowed him to display the "true" characteristics of a Gryffindor and retrieve the sword.

Kerry Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

I cried about Harry too after that chapter... I almost got tear stains on the pages of the book!! I was so upset... and then I looked at the pages left and thought - wait... there must be more... and sure enough! :)

Floridaboy8703 Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:53 PM EST

I mean im sure the ticket price wouldnt be $50. But I would be willing to pay more then the standard $8-10 to see it. If thats any kind of incentive for them to do it.

LooneyLovegood Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

Melissa-I did the exact same thing after I read chapter 34. My roommate was like, does he die?? And at that point I was like yes.. *sobs*
I think the book was pretty perfect. She would never have been able to answer every question. I like that she told us what they do for a living.. I am kind of curious about Hagrid?? Does he remain at Hogwarts with his brother? Now that Voldy is gone does that make the world better for magical creatures? Wow, I really am a huge nerd.

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

I could not agree more about making the movie an epic. The series and the fans deserve it. I don't hate the movies but they do not accurately reflect the stories I know and love.

FJM Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

While I agree with FB about filming the movie on an epic scale, I think the number of people who would pay $50 a ticket are neglible.

Kerry Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

Thanks for the answer!!

I was shocked at the Hedwig part - never saw it coming! Same with Dobby - I never thought they were characters she would even think of killing...

And I wouldn't mind sitting through an epic movie either! I want ALL the details in the book because I'm tired of them having to change the storyline just to make it work for a 2 hour movie! (It'll probably never happen but at least a girl can dream...)

Jen Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

I'm going to really enjoy hearing all about how Rowling crafted the series, and all the wonderful details about the characters. I do hope she writes her Harry Potter encyclopedia someday, just because it will be fun to read.

But, I agree with everyone who wanted to know why she felt it necessary to kill Fred. I definitely sobbed at that part - the twins were great! I figured a Weasley would die, but I had hoped it would be Percy, since he was the one I could let go of the easiest. However, I'm very glad Fred and Percy made up before Fred snuffed it. Hedwig and Dobby's deaths were also quite tragic, I thought.

My favorite person in the series is still Snape, though. He's a complex, well-written character.

To Kerry Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

An "asp" is a kind of snake...

Floridaboy8703 Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

AND AGAIN I AM MAKING MY PLEA TO WARNER BROTHERS.... PLEASE FILM THE LAST HARRY POTTER BOOK ON AN EPIC SCALE. SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINES OF "GONE WITH THE WIND" OR "TITANIC" I DONT CARE HOW MUCH IT COSTS (I KNOW YALL HAVE THE MONEY", I DONT CARE HOW LONG THE MOVIE IS. I WOULD GLADLY SIT THROUGH A 4 OR 5 HOUR VERSION OF THIS BOOK ON FILM. I ALSO WOULDNT MIND PAYING UPWARDS OF $50 TO SEE THIS MOVIE IF IT IS SHOT ON AN EPIC SCALE. PLEASE DO ALL THE FANS A FAVOR AND DO A COMPLETE BOOK TO MOVIE REPRODUCTION OF THE LAST BOOK. THE FIRST 5 MOVIES HAVE BEEN.... WELL I HATE THEM. IM REALLY HOPING YOU DO RIGHT BY US WARNER BROTHERS!

Kerry Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

I still don't understand "asp" or "ASP" and how that means Snake or Slytherin - can someone please spell it out for me? Haha thanks!

Floridaboy8703 Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:37 PM EST

I dunno why I am not as upset about some people towards the lack of answered questions or concrete futures. I think as an author she has to leave some things out of the book. Or it will become just charts and charts and more charts of information. Hello the book had to read as an interesting story not a biography. I am very pleased with how things ended and what we were given. I wish she wouldnt have came on record telling who exactly did what and why this person was spared. I as a huge fan of the series and a huge fan of reading, prefer to make my own conclusions based off what the author has so generously given me. I constructed my own careers, family lines, living situations, and etc of the characters after the book ended.

I am very excited to hear that she is writing two more books. One a childrens book and the other an adult book. She claims thats how harry came into being and that one took over the other.

Steve Z Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

I thought that Harry & Ginny's first born should have bene named James Severus (to show Harry coming to terms with the good and bad qualities in both men). I would have like to see the 2nd son named Albus George or George Albus... give the Weasley's some credit for their sacrifice.

And I agree that Ginny could have used some more development. I think they have showed that she is a naturally powerful witch (in comparison to Ron's feeble magic) and it was nice to see her mom as a powerfouse also (since the Dad seems more good-hearted than magically developed).

But what happened to Cho & Luna? That 's what I wanted to know.

Ceballos Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

Thanks kats...I get it now...i was reading it as "A.S.P." not "asp."

Miranda Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

And yeah, when he whispers to his mom, “Stay close to me.” Poor baby! I had never felt such sympathy for him missing his parents. What a perfect way to show his fear, and longing for normalcy, and his bravery. Perfection!

Alea Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

oh sweet! my one big question was answered! what are their jobs? good to see the answer!

Miranda Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

You know, I thought Harry would be too anti-establishment to work in the Ministry. But if he was going to, I thought he should have been in the Department of Mysteries. That would have kept everyone's imaginations happy. I was surprised that neither he nor Hermione ended up teaching. Hello, DADA expert?

Melissa Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:03 PM EST

Re: Gryffindor's sword...when Harry got the sword (in the last book?) it's because he was a "true" Gryffindor & showed courage, and that's why he was able to get the sword...which, at that point, was hanging in Dumbledore's office. I *think* the same held true for the sword this time, with Neville...the sword recognized "true" Gryffindors as its rightful owners?

Make sense?

JennS Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

W and Dork,
The sword came out of the Sorting Hat for Neville, just like it appeared for Harry in the Chamber of Secrets.

JennS Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

W and Dork,
The sword came out of the Sorting Hat for Neville, just like it appeared for Harry in the Chamber of Secrets.

w Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

Sorry if this is a silly question, but even reading back over parts of the books, how did Neville get the original Griffyndor sword to cut of the snake's head? I thought the Goblin ran off with it, never to be seen (or written about) again.

Dork Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:50 PM EST

Does anyone know how Neville got the Gryffindor sword in the end to chop off the snake's head? I thought the goblin had it.

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

Ceballos~ Asp, snake, Slytherin.

Ceballos Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

Ok, I've thought about it, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not hardcore enough...

What would be the significance of Harry's son's initials being ASP...any help is much appreciated.

Hey Horatio Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

The girl who asked the question about Snape was about 9 or 10 years old.

Josh Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

Mandi, I love your write-ups, and EW in general, but was it necessary to use Christ's name in vain like that? I know, you'll just think I'm some religious nut job, but it offends me to see it baldly in print in that context.

Horatio Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

"Would Snape have still helped Harry if he hadn't felt unrequited love for Harry's mother?"

Why ask Rowling such an obvious question? She could not have made it any more apparent why Snape did what he did. Talk about wasting a good opportunity...

Court Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

Nic--me too!

Melissa--don't worry it's okay, because practically everybody else in the ENTIRE WORLD is at that level of nerdery with you.

Melissa Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

Ericalina - I agree with you. In my fantasy-land, he dabbles in the dark arts. Why else would they have him being so worried about being in Slytherin? Sigh.

ericalina Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

ceballos, i think the name is alberus severus potter so that his intials are ASP and he will definitely be in slytherin house...just a hunch!

kats Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

According to USA Today interview, Lupin and Tonks were the two who died that she had intended to keep alive. I think that makes me feel even worse about it.

Rani Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

Well i see part of my question was answered above.. Snape may have been "good" after all, but there's no doubt that he had questionable morals.

Ruby Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Sorry, my last sentence didn't make much sense. Meant to say I hope that her revelation of more details is satisfying those who were so unhappy w/ the Epilogue. BTW, so excited to hear she's writing again.

Lauren Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Check out usatoday.com, Rowling also did an interview with them, and gave out spoilers.

Rani Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

After the Prince's Tale chapter, I was more confused about Snape. First, if he loved LP so much, why did he join the Death Eaters? And, if they are so strong on blood purity, wouldn't they oust him because he is a half-blood? Also, I didn't understand if he really cared about Harry or just protected him for the sake of LP.

Melissa Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Ceballos - YES, Romione is the new Brangelina, Vaugniston, whathaveyou. I thought it was very fitting, and as they are my favorite characters, I thought they needed a special name. Although I love Luna SO much, and someone I know came up with "Nevuna" for Luna + Neville.

(I never imagined I would reach this level of nerdery, but alas, here I am! And I'm very OK with it!)

Ruby Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

If you read the article on MSNBC, Jo gives a little more details. Man, so upset I couldn't watch this interview (stupid work), but they are running a special on Dateline NBC on Sunday, in case anyone couldn't catch the Today show this morning and tomorrow morning. I don't know, I like that Harry's an Auror...he never wanted to teach, never had the inclination. And with their experience with dark magic, what better place for him and Ron. I hope that Jo has answers to everyone's problem with the Epilogue's "lack of details" is satisfied with the fact that Jo has many of the answers.

Ceballos Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

Hmmm, I don't know about Neville, but I thought I saw a couple of hints that Luna and Dean were about to get into a little sumthin' sumthin'.

Paige: If you check the link you'll see that Luna was a wizarding naturalist and that she might have ended up with Neville, although I thought Dean was the right choice.

Melissa...Is "Romione" the new Brangelina? I like it.

Also, couldn't Harry and Ginny (or maybe Romione) have named one of the kids Doby (good for a boy OR a girl) instead of saddling one of them with the incredibly cumbersome "Albus Severus..."

Love that she has provided more info. Looking so forward to the eventual encyclopedia. Yeah that Harry and Ron are Aurors. Yeah that Hermione is in magical law enforcement. I wonder, did Mr. Weasley's reprieve lead to the death of Fred? With so many Weasley's involved in the fight, did she feel one of them had to die? Why couldn't it have been Percy or even Charlie (sorry, Charlie)?

Court, I agree! I think I cried more for Fred than for any other character. Actually, I think I started crying for the last 5 chapters and didn't stop until the end. I'm such a wuss.

Yeah I must know her answer for why she felt she couldn't bear to kill off Mr. Weasley, but FRED was not immune from her "killing curse." WTF. I'm still very bitter about that. And of course she didn't have a profession for Ginny--she's the most grossly underdeveloped character in the whole series, made only for Harry to pine for and make babies with.

I hope she says something about Lupin, Tonks, Neville, and Luna too.

I teared up just hearing Jo mention chapter 34! I'm glad to know what their careers are but wouldnt you think being an auror is kinda anti-climatic for Harry when he's already defeated the most evil wizard ever? And yes, I know they must always work to keep furure evil at bay, but I was hoping to see Harry as Headmaster at Hogwarts.

Um, I sobbed and sobbed during that part. I needed to put the book down, walk around my apartment for awhile, restock my Kleenex, and take several deep breaths before I could continue. And I am not ashamed to admit it at all. Also gut-wrenching for me...Dobby's Demise. Sigh. My question isn't exactly burning, just curious is Romione's kids' names have special significance...??

Wow. That Today Show set for Radcliffe was almost as ridiculous as his matching shirt and tie combo. Honestly, who told him leopard print was a good idea?

I have a burning question...why didn't RITA SKEETER get it in the end...most of what propelled Harry in his quest to discover what was true about him was driven by the rancid publishings by Rita...and I so wanted her to finally pay in the end...and then nothing. I really wanted Rowling to stick to Skeeter!
