Can Jimmy Fallon even talk to people?

Fallon_l Sorry, P-Dubs, if you've been wondering what the hell has been going on. There were server issues. Seems to be a "Tuesday afternoon" thing. The Moody Blues probably need to stop controlling our blog.

Anyway, NBC's confirmed that Jimmy Fallon is "at the top of our short list" to replace Conan O'Brien as host of NBC's later late-night show in 2009. Conan will replace Leno, obvs, thank God, so someone needs to come on after that and be vaguely funny. (Here’s how Fallon did "on trial" in 2006.) The great news is that we'll all be able to go to bed earlier. Also, 2009? Seems really far away. I wouldn't be surprised if, right before then, I spontaneously combust and all that remains in my place is a puddle of coffee, candy, and the congealed mass of unrelated viral video miscellany that has, by that point, thoroughly replaced my brain. So, questions:

Will society make it to 2009?
What about Lindsay?
Who should replace Conan, if not Jimmy Fallon?

Jimmy Fallon would be a perfect replacement!

Jimmy Fallon would be a perfect replacement!

levi Sun, Oct 28, 2007 at 03:45 PM EST

jimmy is cute and can be funny sometimes but i think he might just be able to pull it off i say give him a chance and plus i think he will have some awesome guests on maybe some old snl guys lets hope so :D

Yeaahhh! Wed, Aug 15, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon might take over for Conan. key word Might! Let's hope not for the sake humanity

mg714 Mon, Aug 6, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

I wondered why no females have been mentioned as a replacement - I agree with previous posters that Bonnie Hunt would be great! She's so personable and funny - she would be great as a talk show host.

Christian Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 04:50 PM EST

I would say steal John Oliver from The Daily Show. He'd do well. Jimmy Fallen is awful. He can't even look his guest in the eye. Shows his weakness as a human.

Dave Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 04:19 PM EST

A thought:

I know some people have thrown Kathy Griffin's name out there in this thread. I would so watch a nightly show of hers. She's not the typical comedian who'd have to strain with a team of writers to make 5 days worth of relevant jokes. She's a master storyteller and one hell of a people person.

What an excellent F-U-VIEW this would be!

j Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon would do great as a talk show host, he's so funny i love him

GT Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

mark in nyc, but Jimmy Fallon thinks he is funny. That is pretty close right?

mark in nyc Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

Instead of Jimmy Fallon they should get someone who is funny.

nathan Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

No Kathy Griffin and no Andy Dick, for the love of all things that are funny, those two have never been and never will be funny.

Chelsea Handler Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

Chelsea Handler!

KATE Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

Zach G., Kathy Griffin, Andy Richter, Sarah Silverman, Rachel Dratch....any of those.

Karoline Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST

Answers to your questions, Annie:

Yes, we'll make it to 2009 but if another Republican wins in '08 it won't be pretty.

Lindsay Lohan will either finally kill herself or some poor innocent victim in a DUI accident long before she can revive her career. Please just lock her away somewhere for a long time so we don't have to hear about her anymore.

Jimmy Fallon's not doing it for me. I don't see him as a great interviewer - he'll always want to be the center of attention. Let's find a total unknown to replace Conan - hold the auditions on YouTube and let the people decide.

wendy Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 09:52 AM EST

Oh NOOOOOOOOOOO! I hate the thought of it. Andy Richter please save us.

Matty Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 08:53 AM EST

For God's sake, no Jimmy Fallon.

Nick Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 08:24 AM EST

Whatever happened to gravitas?

GT Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 07:42 AM EST

I think they should try to find someone totally new liked they did when they picked Conan to take over for Dave. Sure it was a huge risk and almost didn't work but NBC is network #4 in terms of ratings and needs to take some risks. Jimmy Fallon is terrible and annoying. And whoever said Ricky Gervais, he is a total hack, if you don't believe me, check out his performance from the Princess Diana concert. Do you really want him doing Free Love Freeway and the dance every night?

Stephen Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 06:50 AM EST

Wasn't there a post similar to this the day after Adam Sandler filled in for Letterman?

Letterdavidman Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 06:31 AM EST

If he wasn't such a super-successful film actor, I'd say give the job to Vince Vaughn. He absolutely KILLED when he filled in for Letterman a few years back (unlike the excruciatingly unfunny Jimmy Fallon).

Lesley Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 06:24 AM EST

I 100% agree with Bonnie Hunt. The most charming and funny woman on the planet.

Dhungangha Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 05:48 AM EST

Anyone remember the show Life with Bonnie where Bonnie Hunt played a talk show host? Her talk show within the show was hilarious. If she can bring half of the charm she had there, her replacement of Conan would be a huge success. Yes, i'm all for BONNIE HUNT !!!

Delon Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 05:43 AM EST

OH, NO ! Please, please, please NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!! When he was in SNL Fallon was young and cute, and most of his charm came from the fact that he couldn't contain himself during sketches and laughed(especially the ones with Horatio Sanz). Has anyone remember Taxi? I think he would be horrible. I can go with Andy Richter or with a female comedian for a change like Margaret Cho or Sarah Silverman. Heck, even Isaac Mizrahi would be better than Jimmy Fallon !

carbonlite Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 05:09 AM EST

Why not a female comic or a person of color? Margaret Cho, Aisha Tyler, DL Hugley, George Lopez anyone? Wouldn't that be an interesting take on things than the repetitive crap that currently permeates late night? Just look at Ellen on daytime...Kathy Griffin would be much better suited to this than to be stuck on the View. Most importantly, why yet another pasty overrated white dude? We have enough of those. At least get someone with a fresh face (no I don't mean Carson lol)....someone people will watch for more than 2 minutes. JF will wear out his welcome very quick:)

REY Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 03:54 AM EST

I would go with chris rock(conan's friend), rachel dratch, or nbc try to snag letterman's replacement jon stewart.

Nasanji Parker Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 01:38 AM EST

Oh my. If he's on the shortlist, i feel bad for the folks that didn't make it that far. He's so uncomfortable it's hard to watch.

1. it's all in Lindsay's freckled and unwashed hands. if she sobers up, we make it, if not...
2. Too few hugs as a child doesn't even begin to tell the story.
3. Does it really matter? Who stays up that late? Pee-Wee Herman gets my vote.

Matthew Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 11:54 PM EST

I wish Conan could stay in his regular time slot, because that would mean choosin between him and Letterman, and although a tough decision-I'm probably going with Letterman.

&

1. Society's gonna pull through.
2. Lindsay will make it [after some more rehab].
3. NOT JIMMY FALLON. No offense, but he doesnt seem right.

Rani Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 11:02 PM EST

nonononono! I'm with other people who are for Zach G. or Micheal Ian Black.

aa Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 10:45 PM EST

anyone else.

mike Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 10:23 PM EST

None of the late night talk show hosts interview very well. It comes down to sense of humor. That's why Carson Daly is being passed over.

Henry Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 10:10 PM EST

Two words: Jim Rome. Welcome to the (late-night) jungle, clones.

Greg Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 10:04 PM EST

How about Tina Fey?

Ades Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 10:03 PM EST

Annie, why do you barely ever blog?? I say "what the hell " to that.

kellie Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 09:06 PM EST

if amy sedaris didn't have better and more hilarious things to do, she'd be an amazing talk show host.

Jody Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

I like Jimmy. I think he'd be a great host.

tim duffy Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

Zach Galifianakis. His VH1 show was way ahead of it's time, maybe the world would be ready now. He could play with the format in an awesome way.

sharon Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

"P-Dubs" hahahahahahahaahahahaha! I love it! Thanks, Annie!

graeme Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 07:09 PM EST

Bonnie Hunt
Let me think....Bonnie Hunt
and, oh yeah...BONNIE HUNT

Ceballos Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:51 PM EST

Andy Richter. The guy can't catch a break with any of his sitcoms, he's got Late Night experience, and although he was with Conan all those years, I think his comedic style is different enough from Conan's to make them a good back to back combo again.

jonathan Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:44 PM EST

although, Life doesn't look that bad. He was good as Winters in Band of Brothers

jonathan Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:39 PM EST

can we please have Ricky Gervais host the Late Show and have Stephen Merchant as his co-host. I would forgive all the other crap (heroes is great) NBC puts on if they would make that move

Marci Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:17 PM EST

Jimmy Fallon's a likeable guy, but I'm not so sure about him hosting late night. It might be okay if he could get his laughter under control (something he couldn't do on SNL). Instead of Jimmy Fallon, I would nominate Michael Ian Black. I thought he was great when he was auditioning for whatever show Craig Kilborn used to host.

t-fal Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:16 PM EST

my suggestion is Chris Rock, he doesn't curse as much as he used to. Even if its bad, it'll stop him from wasting his talent trying to make movies. Its a win-win!

t-fal Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:13 PM EST

kathy would suck! I like her, but her schtick is insulting celebrities...who would come on the show? it would only work if she was watered down & then it wouldn't be funny

Ka Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

As long as Jimmy can remember Switzerland and Sweden are two different places, we'll be okay.

BrandonK Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 06:00 PM EST

I would not be at all surprised if Lindsay Lohan wasn't around in two years. I second the nomination of Kathy Griffin (side note: am I the only one who thinks Kathy needs to either quit the plastic surgery or go all the way, a la Joan Rivers?).

Stephen Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 05:23 PM EST

1. Society will make it if Obama wins
2. Lindsay will be semi-recovered but reduced to lifetime/hallmark movies
3. Rosie or Kathy Griffin

docsanchez Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 05:23 PM EST

Hey NBC, how about you focus on making some good shows for this upcoming season first. We'll talk about 2009 after you stink up 2007 and 2008. 'kay?
