Haven't seen EW.com's gallery of the Best Love Songs Ever? You don't know what you're missing. (Links to hours upon hours of videos!) It's got the Cure, The Beatles, Elton John, and a picture of Cyndi Lauper that calls to mind Stevie Nicks dipped in cherry Kool-Aid.

What would you put on your ultimate Love Songs playlist? Excluding the obvious choice: "My Humps," because we all know that should've been No. 1... post up, below.

PLLLZZZZ DOES SOMEBODY KNOW THE NAME OF THIS SONG ?? GOES LIKE THIS:

Your love tracks me, without warning
like a mistery, a threat
they all told me i was dreaming
that in time i would forget
when u love somebody deeply
then u love her all ur days
and if she will trully love u
then a fire begins to blaze
i dont need to feel the whisper
of ur breath against my face
i dont need to feel i'm lying
in the warmth of ur embrace
when u love somebody deeply
then u love her all ur days
and if she will trully love u
then a fire begins to blaze
just a memory of one kiss
and the lightning in her eyes
breaks the chains that hold them captive
set this spire away to fly
and we found a secret treasure
to change darknesses to light
.......

i forgot the end. does anyone know it ?? it's a magical and amazing love song. just never knew it's name or singer!!!

Smoochie Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

Boy you are missing a lot of great "love" songs. A few that came to mind as I was looking at your list-Sexual Healing (Marvin Gaye, Love Will Lead You Back (Taylor Dayne), The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack) and Lovin, Touchin and Squeeezin or anything by Journey.

Kimmey Mon, Jan 14, 2008 at 08:42 AM EST

Your list is missing most of the good ones. All you have to do is tune in to a good country station and every other song they play is a love song. Look at the stats of the most used song at weddings.

ruth hunter Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 07:54 PM EST

You have a very limited group of songs. What about Sinatra, Armstrong, and Peggy Lee? what about Nat King Cole? How many movies have used "The Way You Look Tonight"? "Fly Me to the Moon?"
Or even Puccini? Nessun Dorman, or anything from La Boheme?

Michael Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 04:37 PM EST

I remembered a few more: Nickelback- Far Away, Bon Jovi- This Ain't A Love Song, Dixie Chicks- Lullaby, Gary Allan- Watching Airplanes, Mariah Carey- We Belong Together

Michael Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 04:30 PM EST

I agree with a few on the list. I agree with Chasing Cars definitely, although I think it should be higher up. I also think the list is missing To Make You Feel My Love by Garth Brooks, Maybe by Kelly Clarkson (my number one choice), Stay by Sugarland, Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden, I Could Not Ask For More by Sara Evans, You And Me by Lifehouse, and also the frank and upfront These Words by Natasha Bedingfield, as well as few others that I can't remember at the moment.

Sabrina Wed, Jan 9, 2008 at 02:42 AM EST

No James Taylor?? How does that happen?

And honestly, "This I Promise You" by NSYNC. I know it's NSYNC and all, but its one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard and it turns any female in a 100 yd radius to mush.

Mike Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 10:20 PM EST

I looked at your 50 songs. Not a bad list, though obviously it would be next to impossible to please everyone. Odd that you couldn't find room for one song by David Gates (of Bread), Jimmy Webb or Neil Diamond. Did you poll your office staff to come up with the list? They must be mostly twentysomethings--a group that would know a lot about the current music scene, and have a fair knowledge of classic 1960's artists, but probably little knowledge of most 1970's artists.

Tiffany Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 01:22 PM EST

The song that always gets to me is "I'd Die Without You" by P.M. Dawn. I think I'm gonna cry now.

kat fletcher Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 12:36 PM EST

Best song lyrics ever - especially about love: In My Life by John Lennon.

steve Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 08:43 AM EST

you forgot about "secret garden"!

CosmoDream Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 12:52 AM EST

But I TOTALLY agree with Mary J. Blige's "Be without You" (she showed her softer, lovey dovey side...and we like it!)

Also Elvis Presley's "Can't Help falling in love" (This one prob got covered 700 times as well, but one can touch the KING!)

CosmoDream Mon, Jan 7, 2008 at 12:48 AM EST

Some of mine might not apply so much, since some are in spanish :P

Brand New- The No Seatbelt Song(absolutely one of the most vulnerable and obsessive songs I've heard that might rival Morrisey)

U2-With or Without you(HOW CAN U FORGET THAT????)

Juanes- Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor( Translation: Nothing's worth it w/out ur love. Maybe if it was in english it would have been on this list)

Damien Rice- The Blower's Daughter(such a simple, gorgeous song...one that is as-heard-on-the movie Closer!)

Dashboard Confessional- Hands Down(asking ur date to kill u woth a kiss is pretty creepy...but the vocals soar so u don't even notice)

Lifehouse-Breathing(one of their underrated song since it came from an unsuccessful album. but the mandolin and his soft voice are perfect)

Nickelback-Far Away(sure they can be a lil cheesy, but I like this one!)

Marco Antonio Solis- Tu Carcel (roughly translated, Your prison...a lil strange as well, but the melody is so happy, and catchy, u breeze by this one!

Laurel Sun, Jan 6, 2008 at 11:32 PM EST

The most beautiful love song of all time "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," by Pheobe Snow!

"Eternal Flame" by the Bangles.
Soulful, tender, and some impressive vocals.

Angie Jeu Sun, Jan 6, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

Here, There and Everywhere by the Beatles!!!

Sirk Sun, Jan 6, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

Glaring oversights:
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley/Lenard Cohen
Luckiest - Ben Folds
(My Curse - the afghan whigs - Best Love song hardly anyone has heard)

bob Sun, Jan 6, 2008 at 10:33 PM EST

"True Love", sung by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in the film, "High Society". Written by Cole Porter.

Check it out un YouTube

Sherry Sun, Jan 6, 2008 at 07:59 AM EST

You get a major kudo from me for including the greatest love song ever; "As" by Stevie Wonder. Reduces me to tears every time I hear it. Still.
Ane what about Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" or "Tupelo Honey"????

Shawn D Sun, Jan 6, 2008 at 12:58 AM EST

How could you miss "Somebody" by Depeche Mode?

robboz Sat, Jan 5, 2008 at 01:21 AM EST

Guns n Roses? Puhleeze! Old 70s/80s love songs are the best!
Weekend in New England-Barry Manilow
If-Bread
Annie's Song (You Fill Up My Senses...)-John Denver
Hello-Lionel Richie
Those'll tug the ol' heartstrings!

Chefslb Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

Will you marry me Paula Abdul
I go blind Hootie and the Blowfish
I know the feeling Taylor Dayne
Love of a Lifetime Firehouse
After All cher
I turn to you Chrstine Aguilera
Now that I found you Expose
When I looked at him Expose
Smoke gets in your eyes The Platters
Hey Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville

Scott Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 07:35 PM EST

Top 25 or bottom 25? No TOP list would be complete without Barry White firmly at the top!!

e-squirrel Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 10:43 AM EST

What did you miss? What the heck? These choices are crap. Where is Marvin Gaye? Lionel Ritchie? Air Supply? Who are you people?

wxcguy Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 07:31 AM EST

I love Annie's Song by John Denver, Love me by Elvis, Love Bites and Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad by Def Leppard...among others

Steve Duplantis Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 07:03 AM EST

"Sweet Child of Mine"?? C'mon, that ain't no love song--it's good old Rock and Roll. How about "True" by Spandau Ballet?

PC Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 02:22 AM EST

Madonna "crazy for you"
bon jovi "never say goodbye" total prom flashback
any Journey song from the 80's that you couple skated to!
Bonnie Tyler "total eclipse of the heart"
The Police "everybreath you take"
Come on people you blew it on most of these songs!

kelolo Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 02:11 AM EST

I totaly cannot believe that Marvin Gaye's Lets Get it On is not number 1.

Gregg H Fri, Jan 4, 2008 at 01:19 AM EST

My top choice is "Silver Springs" by Fleetwood Mac. Originally recorded for, but left off "Rumours" in 1976, Stevie Nicks' dramatic lyrics remind a lost love "what you could have been to me." The song was gloriously recorded live for "The Dance" in 1997 and became a radio hit and earned Nicks a Grammy Nomination.

candy Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 10:48 PM EST

Yo, your number 1 choice is like for Mike Huckabee. Come on now, there's better than that!

George Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Crazy in Love??????? Are you kidding me? Grow da fu' up!

Brent Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 10:44 PM EST

if you go away by neil diamond later done by cindy lauper

best heartbreak ever

Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

Evergreen or The Way We Were by Barbra Streisand.
Anything by The Carpenters
Just The Way You Are by Billy Joel

Pete Stamcos Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

Die! Die! My darling! Metallica or Danzig's version..ha ha

deepeee Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 08:15 PM EST

Annie's Song by John Denver is perhaps the most beautifully written expression of true love EVER.......It brings me to tears every time I hear it.....should have been #1---there were a LOT of crappy, not romantic songs on that list

ashok Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 08:10 PM EST

How about "Save a Prayer" by Duran Duran or "Rent" by Pet Shop Boys or "Careless Whisper" by George Michael?????

lori (for the jillionth time) Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

I really should try to think of all of these before I post... but really, half of "No Name Face" by Lifehouse could be on there, especially "Breathing" and "Everything." I mean, the way "Everything" starts out slow and builds to that crescendo... It's amazing.

Stephanie Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 06:49 PM EST

I can't respect a list that doesn't include Romeo and Juliet--the melancholy Dire Straits original, not the Indigo Girls' angry revision.

How Could I Have Forgotten? Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 06:46 PM EST

"Two Step" by Dave Matthews Band

Thaddeus Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 06:39 PM EST

'Layla' by Derek & the Dominos
'Bargain' by the Who

those are essential.

Chuckles Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 05:55 PM EST

How about "Loving You" by Minnie Riperton?

One more thing... Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 05:43 PM EST

For those of you who suggested it, "More Than Words" is not a love song. The message of the song is, "If you really loved me, you'd put out."

lori Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 05:42 PM EST

Oh, and where on earth is "The Way You Look Tonight"?

lori Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 05:38 PM EST

How on earth can "It Had to Be You" not be on this list? It acknowledges the good and the bad in the relationship, and how both are what make it work.

Also, I'd vote for "Pulse" by Ani DiFranco, but I'm not surprised it didn't make it.

Eugene D III Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

No song in the last 10 years should make the list. "Think I'm in Love" (Beck) and "All Over Again" (Justin Timberlake) sound good-great now, but "If You Leave Me Now" (Chicago) was the slow dance of choice in 1976.

Also list needs two love categories: Mmmm-Good and Uh-oh Not-So-Good.

My adds to the Mmmm Good list are:

Something's Gotta Hold On Me (Etta James) - More joyful than "At Last" and maybe better.

I Just Want To Get Next To You (Rose Royce) - Great with or without "Car Wash" on TV.

Sweet Jane (Cowboy Junkies) - No disrespect to the Lou Reed, real-life junkie version, but the Cowboy Junkies dreamy turn-on transcends.

Martha (Tom Waits)- Seen many Tom Frosts in bars drinking up the courage to make that lovelorn phone call.

Adds for the Uh-oh Not-So-Good list:

I Can Go On (Riots)- Chicago garage band rarity aches with 1960's heartache.

Piece of My Heart (Joplin) - Janice's wail pierces time.

Better Be Home Soon (Crowded House) - You don't want to breakup, but...

oakleydog Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

I'm always amazed at these lists. How can something that was written in the past year be considered one of the best songs ever...doesn't 'ever' mean it has to stand some sort of test of time? For what it's worth, here are some of my picks
Make You Feel My Love - Bob Dylan
I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen
Avalon - Roxy Music
Moondance - Van Morrison
With or Without You - U2
Kiss from a Rose - Seal
Trumpets - The Waterboys
Your Love - Hothouse Flowers
We Can't Live Together - Joe Jackson
Gotta Get You Into My Life - Beatles

Michelle Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

Two songs that were no where on the list or mentioned here
How Do I live- Trisha Yearwood
You're My Home- Billy Joel: I want to get married just to play this song
And for some reason no one put any songs from musicals. The Wicked was good. Without You from Rent. Ok so now I am blanking on musicals, but so many are about love so they have great songs. And Dangerously In Love is better than Crazy In Love.

Patrick Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 12:24 PM EST

HOW DID YOU FORGET:
"It Must Be Love" by Madness... it's the perfect love song. Listen to it!

Jason Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 11:09 AM EST

You have Guns 'N Roses at number 8, but don't include any James Taylor? What about..."Something in the way she moves, looks my way or calls my name. It seems to leave this troubled world behind."...:I feel fine anytime she's around me now, and she's around me now almost all the time. And if I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now. And she's been with me now, quite a long, long time and I feel fine."
You can't get much better than that.

j Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 06:14 AM EST

it might be you
i'll be seeing you

no barry manilow song?
this one's for you, all the time, mandy, looks like we made it...

j Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 06:09 AM EST

what are you doin the rest of your life?
in my life
for no one
travelling boy
of all the things
i will wait for you
we've only just begun
you and i (will travel far together...)
silly love songs
longer
the summer knows (theme from summer of '42)
the first time ever i saw your face
the twelfth of never
just once
the way we were
theme from love story
i love how you love me
la vie en rose

Nancy Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 02:46 AM EST

I can't believe the Beach boys were number one. How stupid is that??

There is only one that deserves that space;
"Colour My World" by Chicago

Others that should be up there are "Evergreen" by Barbara Streisand, and "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler

Kathy Thu, Jan 3, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

What's wrong with you!!! You forgot to add "Longer" by Dan Fogelberg and "Babe" by Styx.

david Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 11:42 PM EST

How could you leave off Elvin Bishop, "Fool around and Fell in Love" or Jeff Healy Band, "Angel Eyes"

Seeking Unemployment Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 11:14 PM EST

Did I miss something? I Will Always Love You is a break-up song. Dolly wrote it when she was leaving Porter Waggoner's show, and sings it again when she leaves the sheriff in the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Listen to the words - if you must go... I'll only stand in your way. I guess they put it on the list because it's love that you can't have. (How about adding Every Breath You Take - a nice little song about stalking.)

AJ Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 11:10 PM EST

1. Amazed- Lonestar
2. Babe-Styx
3. Always- Bon Jovi
4. Thank you for loving me- Bon Jovi
5. I'll be there for you- Bon Jovi
6. Lost in this Moment- Big and Rich
7. Angel- Aerosmith
Seriously, most of your choices suck.

David Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 10:46 PM EST

Oh and also...
"Layla" Eric Clapton
I mean it obviously worked pretty well, right?

David Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

"Glycerine" Bush
"Friday I'm in Love" The Cure
"Love Song" The Cure
"Hey There Delilah" Plain White T's

Jeff Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:16 PM EST

No top 50 list should be without Led Zeppelin. Thank You is one of the greatest love songs ever--"If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me."

M Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 09:06 PM EST

Great list, but Hey There Delilah by the Plain White Ts should have been on there! But great list!

"I Melt With You" is at 33!?!?! That is SO wrong! That, in my opinion, should've been in the top 10. &, if you have to wonder what it means to melt with someone...you obviously never have.

I also agree that "Fallen" by Lauren Wood is a beautiful love song. One of the best on the Pretty Woman soundtrack.

jess Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 03:01 PM EST

running - snow patrol
everything - lifehouse
you and me - lifehouse
stolen - dashboard confessional
i miss you - bjork

Tana Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 02:50 PM EST

Imagine a teenager slow-dancing to it on summer vacation at the lake... I've loved "I Only Have Eyes for You" by the Flamingos ever since. Sooo romantic.

David Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 02:43 PM EST

For the most part this subjective list is ok. The only one I thought should be there is "Take My Breath Away" from Berlin

However, sentimental tripe and songs about unfilled or needing-to-be-fixed relationships are not romantic so no "Crazy", "Someone To Watch Over Me", Vandross or Taylor

Scot Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

WHAT? Where's Harry Nilsson and "Without you"

dawn Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

Seems wrong to leave Sarah McLachlan off the list!! One lesser-known love song that is near to top of my list is "Fallen" by Lauren Wood, great tune!

Stacey Jay Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

Sinead O' Connor- Nothing Compares to You

How could you leave this song off the list?

Patience - Guns 'n Roses
Skyway - The Replacements
More than Words - Extreme

jdcord Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 01:06 AM EST

Oops. Forgot one myself:
"Highway Song" - Blackfoot

jdcord Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 12:59 AM EST

What did you miss??

How about "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton?

Or "Lady in Red" by Chris De Burgh?

Then there's always "I Need You" by Leann Rimes, as well as the great Lynyrd Skynyrd song of the exact same title.

And, of course, there's "Layla" (Clapton's love song to George Harrison's wife).

"Trouble Me" - 10,000 Maniacs
"She's Got A Way" - Billy Joel
"Love Alive" - Heart
"Right Here Waiting" - Richard Marx

...... and just about anything by Anita Baker.

Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 11:37 PM EST

U2 - One
Pretenders - Stand by You
Eric Clapton - Layla
Van Morrison - Tupelo Honey
Sting - Fields of Gold
Annie Lennox - No More I Love Yous
October Project - Return to Me
Sting - When We Dance
Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars
Genesis - Follow You Follow Me
Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around and Fell In Love

Faithy Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

My two cents:
Props on Your Song (though Tiny Dancer is better, and I've always thought that John Cusack should use it in Say Anything) and Chasing Cars. Yellow was also a good choice, but there are tons better Coldplay songs (i.e. kingdom come, which has way more straightforward, yet still unique, lyrics).
stuff they should have included:
Crush by DMB. It's both honest and sexy.
Slide by The Goo Goo Dolls. All mix cds should end with it.
It's corny, but Good Riddance by Green Day always makes people smile.

Songs that might not really be "Love Songs," but that still rip out my intestines and eat them in a beautiful way, much like love:
"I Miss You" by Blink-182. "The webs from all the spiders, catching things and eating their insides, like indesicion to call you" strikes so true to me.
"Country Feedback" by R.E.M. (who, by the way, are the best band ever). When Michael Stipe sings "I Need This" I cry. Every time.

And my #1: "For Good" from Wicked. It says all a love song needs to say

Kat Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 06:51 PM EST

Hello! What about "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith?

T Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 05:03 PM EST

Whoever created this list obviously has never listened to SADE.....mostly a terrible list of songs....thanks for the laugh today....

Finis Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

Let's be real about this list, it's obviously made by mostly uniformed white people. Not to have any Luther Vandross the greatest balladeer ever. Not to have any Isley Bros. or the hundreds of other great love songs that the black community and just people who KNOW MUSIC... know are great is insulting. I don't know who voted for these but it's obvious it doesn't represent a balanced cross-section of races. It's just amazing how limited some people's scope of the world is even in the 21 century. Now there are some great songs on here... but nobody's making love or slow dancing to Purple Rain or Dangerously in Love anytime soon. Oh...and thanks for the few token black artist on the list. Just call it a list for uniformed America.

Sean Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 03:28 PM EST

Falling Slowly from the Once soundtrack should have been on there. Then again, almost anything from Once could have been on there.

Jennifer Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

"I Believe (When I Fall In Love)" by Stevie Wonder. Reduces me to tears every time.

Donna Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

OMG not a single James Taylor song? Has the world gone mad?!

"So though I never say that I love you
I love you
Darling I do
Carly, I do love you
And though we are as nothing
To the stars that shine above
You are my universe
You are my love"

Gawd, what I wouldn't give to be loved like that...

Cheri Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:00 PM EST

Yuk - some of these lists are making my blood sugar go thru the roof. Kudos for the most part on the list. Triple ditto on Layla - how could you leave that out!?!? Add Crazy & Nothing Compares to U - pretty much perfect!

Music Doc Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 10:05 PM EST

How could you leave out "You're the Inspiration" by Chicago?? It's certainly more romantic than a LOT of songs on that list!

Jen Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:14 PM EST

One more...cheesy but beautiful..."Valentine" by Martina McBride. That & the Alison Krauss tune were my wedding songs.

Jen Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:08 PM EST

How about "When You Say Nothing At All" by Alison Kraus & Union Station (originally done by Keith Whitely))?

tidymaze Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 09:04 PM EST

No One, by Alicia Keys is an obvious choice, but perhaps too new for your list. Also, "Set the Fire to the Third Bar" by Snow Patrol & Martha Wainwright. Absolutely beautiful.

teapot Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 07:49 PM EST

Crowded House's "Fall At Your Feet", "Don't Dream It's Over", "Better Be Home Soon" and "When You Come." Nuff said.

Renee Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

I should smack myself for leaving out:
"Always and Forever" by Heatwave;"Anything I Do(I'd Do It For You)-Bryan Adams;"I'd Die Without You"- PM Dawn;any love song by Bob Marley,Billy Joel,Boyz II Men,etc.

Renee Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

A top 25 love song list and NO entries for Barry White,Luther Vandross(sacrilege),the Isley Brothers,Anita Baker, and only one entry from Prince and Marvin Gaye? Who compiled this list??!!
Here is a partial list of some of my favorites-in no particular order:

1.Love Ballad-L.T.D. featuring Jeffrey Osborne
2.Never Tear Us Apart-INXS
3.Every love song ever written by: Prince(I wouldn't have picked "Purple Rain for this list, though),Barry White,Smokey Robinson,Lionel Richie,Phil Collins,Mariah Carey
4.Lost Without U-Robin Thicke(how did you guys miss THIS one??)
5.Overjoyed-Stevie Wonder(my future wedding song-and you get points for "As")
6.Voyage To Atlantis- Isley Brothers
7.Heaven Can Wait-Michael Jackson
8.I Just Can't Stop Loving You-Michael Jackson
9.Anita Baker's first five albums
10.I Want You(the entire album)-Marvin Gaye
11.If Only For One Night/Creepin'-Luther Vandross
12.Daydreamin'-Aretha Franklin
13.Dangerously In Love-Beyonce(certainly NOT Crazy In Love)

Bob Stout Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 07:10 PM EST

Purely love songs:
"Love Letters" - Kitty Lester
"Flying" - Chas & Dave
"Only You" - The Platters
"My Prayer" - The Platters
"Annie's Song" - John Denver
"Our Lives" - Minnie Ripperton
"This Magic Moment" = Jay and the Americans
"Miss You All The Time" - Chas & Dave
"Verrano a te" - Gaetano Donizetti (Lucia di Lammermoor)

Not strictly love songs:
"It's Just a Matter of Time" - Brook Benton
"Without You" - Harry Nilsson
"A Place Where We Used to Live" - Mark Knopfler
"Even Now" - Nana Mouskouri

Song Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 06:51 PM EST

Had to mention Frank Sinatra. "I'm A Fool To Love You" is great. I'm from The Beatles era but if you like love songs give Sinatra a listen. And I'll give Beyonce a listen!

Kiley Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 04:33 PM EST

Well it depends on what you term 'love song' I mean, it's between lovers then NO, The Beatles' "In My Life" doesn't not belong. I personally think Harrison's penned "Something" is the greatest love song ever. I am surprised more Beatle tracks aren't up there. Macca was always singing about love and the band in the beginning only wrote about it the first few albums.

Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

Mark Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

My Opinion...the best ever..."First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack

Pam Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

"Marie" by Randy Newman because his flawed love is heartbreaking. "My Funny Valentine," especially Ricki Lee Jones' version." "Long Distance Love" by Little Feat. "Sweet Little Lisa," either Dave Edmonds' or Albert Lee's version.

Sixties Babe Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 03:03 PM EST

Time in a Bottle--Jim Croce
And I Love You So--Perry Como
You Are So Beautiful--Joe Cocker

Dolie Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

How could you not include "She's Got A Way" by Billy Joel? That is one of the most beautiful love songs. But even topping that, where is THE ultimate "I Believe In You And Me" by The Four Tops? Come on...that song says it all. Where is "You Are So Beautiful" (to me) on there by Joe Cocker? And I have to agree that I can't believe Beyonce made it to the list! I love Beyonce but come on people...you titled the list "Best Love Songs...EVER"!!!! Beyonce????!!!!??? Come ON PEOPLE!!!

Lucy Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

Baby Can I Hold You-Tracy Chapman

My Love Is-Little Willie John

Just Another Day-Jon Secada

Gretchen Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 01:49 PM EST

Stand by Me - Ben E. King
By Your Side - Sade

Stand by Me was my first dance song at my wedding. So sweet.

HJ Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

FYI. "Every Breath You Take" is NOT a love song, it's about stalking someone, even Sting has admitted that.

jetcharger Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

I forgot one...

Nothings gonna stop us now - Starship

jetcharger Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

No question, #1 is...(and it's not even on the list...what a sham)

Everything I do - Bryan Adams

Strong notables;
Right here waiting - Richard Marx
My Heart will go on - Celine Dion
Alone - Heart
Love is on the way - Saigon Kick
Every Breath you take - Police

Cimino Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

When I saw the heading, I was trying to guess which Marvin Gaye song would be at #1: Sexual Healing or Let's Get It On. So with neither being on the list, I find it flawed and pointless.

HJ Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

Not a fan of hers, but Selena's "I could Fall in Love" is one of the prettiest, and most hauntingly beautiful, songs I've ever heard. Also I agree with Charlie's comment above that Bob Marley's "Waiting in Vain" is just an amazing song that should be on this list.

Kathleen Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

OOPS I meant Dan Fogelberg!!! Spelled the name wrong - I haven't had my coffee yet this morning!!

Kathleen Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

"I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston? NO WAY. She yells and overdoes this song so much it's painful to listen to.

"Crazy in Love" by Beyonce? How in the name of all that is holy can you put that annoying song on this list? It is terrible - the horns overblow the song and you can't even understand what she is singing.

Best Love Song NOT on the list:

LONGER by Dan Fogelbird. This song came out 2 months after I got married, and I cried when I heard it. I almost wanted to get married again just so it could be sung at my wedding. It will be sung at our 30th wedding anniversary bash next year!

MissTee2U Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

"Purple Rain" but not "Adore" Delve a little deeper into the Prince catalogue my friends. "If God one day struck me blind, you're beauty I'd still see/Love's too weak to define just what you mean to me"
That's the best lyric about love ever created.

D. Hair Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 10:47 AM EST

WHAT? No BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS? I married the love of my life 12/22/07, and "You've Made Me So Very Happy" is our song!!!

ben Mon, Dec 31, 2007 at 10:18 AM EST

Bar none... Madonna's "Crazy for You." Yes, it's about infatuation, but it works for the magic of seeing the one you love and feeling in love all over again.

chi town Sat, Dec 22, 2007 at 05:04 PM EST

Obviously, not too many who have lived more than 4 decades replying to this one.. so let me add my .02 worth.

Norman Connors - 'You Are My Starship'
Minnie Ripperton - 'Here We Go'
Marvin Gaye - 'Come Live With Me, Angel'
Heatwave - 'Star of a Story'
Stevie Wonder - 'Rocket Love' & 'Superwoman' (!!!)

Isley Brothers - 'Footsteps in the Dark', 'Here We Go Again', 'Make Me Say it Again Girl', 'Hello, It's Me', 'For the Love of You' --Just to name a few Among many from the Isley's

Anita Baker - Take ANY SONG from the 'Compositions' album
Angela Bofill - 'I Try'
Gap Band - 'Yearning for Your Love'

Mary J. Blige makes the least 3+ times but not one song by Roberta Flack, Barry White or Anita Baker??! Ridiculous.

Chris Wed, Aug 22, 2007 at 04:51 AM EST

Someone mentioned "Thank You" by Led Zeppelin, but "The Rain Song" is the
most underrated and most hauntingly romantic song Plant ever sung.

Also...
"Song to the Siren"--Tim Buckley, though Robert Plant does an excellent cover.

"When a Woman Loves a Man"--Billie Holiday

"As Time Goes By"--Dooley Wilson, because it's the theme to the most romantic movie of all time.

Goopy as it is, "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls has stood the test of time because it's about something more than love; it's about the longing for a connection, and the struggle for identity.

"Transatlanticism"--Death Cab for Cutie, because it's impossible not to melt when Gibbard sings, "I need you so much closer."

"Someone Saved My Life Tonight"--Elton John. Technically it's about Elton's failed suicide attempt, but it's also a tribute to the power of friendship. Besides, shouldn't love save someone's life any night?

Lish Wed, Aug 15, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

What happened to Lauren Hill and D'Angelo "Nothing Even Matters"?

nick lachey - whats left of me
the feelers - fishing for lisa

Kelly Thu, Aug 9, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

Glad to see you included "All I Want is You" by U2 as it's an amazing love song. However, you missed The Police's "I Burn for You," Regina Spektor's "Fidelity," Allison Krause's "When You Say Nothing at All," and, lastly, Nellie McKay's "Face of a Faith."

Sue Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 06:10 PM EST

Shania Twain has the best loves songs worldwide.
I am glad you have Shania's "YOUR STILL THE ONE" on the list because it is a classic but how about Shania's "FROM THIS MOMENT ON" which also is classic worldwide.
Why is beyoncees crazy in love ahead of Shania's classic love songs. Crazy in Love is not a classic and not even a love song.

Melissa Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

I ditto "Thank You" by Zep. One of the most beautiful love songs ever.

Then I have to get corny and add "Can't Fight This Feeling"

Amanda Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 10:05 AM EST

What about "Amazed" by Lonestar? That is mine and my husband's song and the first song we danced to at our wedding. And where is "Always" by Bon Jovi?

Mel Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

Ditto # 4 to Layla-what were you thinkin??
Dittos to U2's One and "Angie"

Alex Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 09:26 AM EST

It's an utter travesty that you left off Jeff Buckley - "Lover, You Should've Come Over." A masterpiece of unrequited love. And Beyonce?! Really?

Zemari Tue, Aug 7, 2007 at 03:51 AM EST

Back on the road, Joe Egan

R.M. Sun, Aug 5, 2007 at 08:01 PM EST

All i have to say is why no mariah carey songs whats wrong with you people.

Jessica Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

On 'I Will Always Love You' - sure, Whitney's version is dramatic, but I don't believe her for a second. With Dolly's version, you can hear in her voice that she means every word.

sharon morris Wed, Aug 1, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

What about:
Here and now..Luther Vandross
My girl..Temptations
From this moment on...Shania Twain

DL Tue, Jul 31, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

Great calls on Coldplay, The Cure, U2 and the Righteous Brothers, but no love song list can be complete without Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey.

Also, David Grey (Please Forgive Me), and Pearl Jam (Black)...

Angus, London Mon, Jul 30, 2007 at 08:36 AM EST

Some good ones in amongst all this but you're all missing ...
Pulp - "Something Changed"
The Human League - "Love Action"
David Bowie - "The Prettiest Star"
Kate Bush - "Feel It"
Sister Sledge - "Thinking Of You"

Sun, Jul 29, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

I can't believe you guys forgot "Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel. Same here for "Layla".

Cathy Sun, Jul 29, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls would definitely be my #1 choice!

Nick Sun, Jul 29, 2007 at 09:11 AM EST

Here's a few lesser known gems:
"Another First Kiss" by They Might Be Giants- a rare love song from the Johns.
"Tomorrow is a Long Time" by Nickel Creek- originally by Bob Dylan, but Sara Watkins' take is so heartbreaking, you just wanna hold her and tell her everything's gonna be OK.
"If There's Love" by Citizen Cope- you'll never grow old because you're forever young. Who wouldn't melt to THAT?
"Jane" by Barenaked Ladies- it takes a special lady to dazzle someone while they're shoplifting.
"The Girl is Mine" by Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson- if only for their arguing.

k Sat, Jul 28, 2007 at 01:47 AM EST

Ditto on "Layla" and "When you say nothing at all."

My additions: "If" (Bread) and "Time in a Bottle" (Jim Croce). Also "Windmills of my mind," the theme from the original (and best) Thomas Crown Affair.

Raymond Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

i know that the smiths are on there but wheres 'my love life' by morrissey!

Tira Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

Where's "Layla"? That's the most gut-wrenching, passionate love song I've ever heard. You can just feel the raw emotion in it.

peggy Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

oh yeah- it's your love by tim and faith, the video is amazing, and there is a song that has been sung at every wedding i have been to in the last 15 years- i will be there, by stephen curtis chapman. i know it's a "contemporary christian" song, but it's themost beautiful song about love that is meant for a whole lifetime!

peggy Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

elvis costello's version of "she" from the soundtrack of notting hill. i just about die everytime i hear it (daily) it's beautiful and soulful and, well, it's evis costello, what can i say.

nana Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

TAKE MY BREATH AWAY-BERLIN!!!!!
ANGELS-ROBBIE WILLIAMS!!!!!
and a bunch of other songs, which I can't remember right now...But these two should not only be on the list, but also on the top-10!!!!

Lisa Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 08:10 AM EST

Crush - Dave Matthes Band. Hands down. Especially the full album version which ends with the hauntingly beautiful plea:
So much you have given love
That I would give you back
Again and again
Meaning I'll hold you
And please
Let me always

LRM Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 05:45 PM EST

What about some of the classics? Like "To Love Somebody" by the Bee Gee's or Donnie Hathaways version of "A Song For You"?
"When you say nothing at all" by Allison Kraus

Monica Velez Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

Jesus, people!! How about:
1. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor.
2. Come Away with Me - Norah Jones
3. Anything by Air Supply - I know, crazy cheesy, but so is love!!!

Pyynk Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:35 AM EST

I'll join the chorus of complaints for the lack of The Cure's "Lovesong" on this list.

One other performers I'll mention who's absence is a tragic flaw is Nick Cave.

Straight to You and The Ship Song are two of the most beautiful declarations of love EVER.

Quentin-Alexandre Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 03:01 AM EST

It's true i'm more of a modern kid, so i'm not sure I care that much about all the old classics in your list.
In any case, here are some of my favorites:

Sail Away, David Gray (listen to it, his voice, and tell me love isn't about leaving everything to be with someone)

You and Me, Lifehouse

For me, it's you, Train. Maybe an odd choice, but it's just unapologetically romantic.

Oh, and Withney's I will Always Love You should be way higher than 6, and probably #1...

WENDY REINGOLD Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 05:53 PM EST

You did not mention the classic emotional love song "IT'S TOO SOON TO KNOW " recorded by THE ORIOLES, PAT BOONE, ETTA JAMES AND LINDA RONSTADT !

How about the most underrated James Bond theme song: "All Time High" (The theme for Octopussy) by Rita Coolidge. It is so pretty.

Stephanie Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 01:18 PM EST

Gord:

Song to the Siren is actually a Tim Buckley song, but Fraizer made the song hers. Just like When The Stars Go Blue has been covered too many times, but Tim McGraw made Ryan Adam'es beautiful love song his.

U2 "With or Without You"

Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

"I'm Yours" or "Sleeping to Dream" by Jason Mraz. I also agree with "Hey Julie" by Fountains of Wayne

Winona Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

The list was mostly flawless - "God Only Knows" is the perfect pick for #1 - but I'm seeing a big hole in the list: Chicago's "Just You and Me".

hopeless romantic Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

I absolutely adore "Betcha By Golly Wow." The Stylistics version is what love sounds like, so sweet and pure. I can't believe that the song didn't make the list or that it hasn't been included on someone's list of omissions.

Were's Mariah? Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

Ok so she has a gazillion hits and most are overplayed/overhyped (dare i say cheesy) ballads, but Mariah at her best is in a class few can reach (here's looking at you Beyonce/Alicia). My pick:

"My ALL" - this restrained and heartfelt performance perfectly describes the longing we all felt for love.

kayraynaz Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

"Someone Like You", Van Morrison -- Top Five!!!

moni Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

i pretty much dig the list. i agree with those who have mentioned "Love Song" and "Crash". my personal favorites are:
"Oh Boy" ~Buddy Holly (played when I walked down the aisle at my wedding)
"Quit Your Life" ~MxPx. Very sweet song.
"To Make You Feel My Love" ~Garth Brooks...I know, I know. But it is a sad, mushy love song nonetheless.

Frank s. Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Um, let us also not forget--
Crazy For You - Madonna
You Make Me feel Brand New- the Stylisitics
Beth-- Kiss
Tell It Like It is-- The Neville Brothers
Heroes-- David Bowie
Touch- Seal
and well, we could go on for a while with this kind of thing...

Frank s. Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

Um,, where is
Close to You-- The Carpenters,
The First Time Ever I saw Your Face-- Roberta Flack
Till you Come Back to Me/Superstar- Luther Vandross
When We Dance-- Sting
Since I fell For You-- Lenny Welch
Whenever, Whatever, Whenever- Maxwell
Don't Dream Its Over- Crowded House

And Why Crazy In Love & Sweet Child of Mine?

Miss Tay Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

What about "Adore" by Prince?

CW Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:39 AM EST

I enjoy and was hoping for:

"I Swear" - All-4-One
"I'll Make Love to You" - Boyz II Men
"Power of Love / Love Power" - Luther Vandross

and finally,

"Let's Get it On" - Marvin Gaye

though I wasn't sure if these were omitted based on the rules or they just weren't considered...

kinggerbs Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

is this love? by bob marley, i thought this was the best wedding song, but the wife didn't think it was a good slow song to dance to so we went with all i want is you by U2 instead.

Kris Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:26 AM EST

"Running Scared" by Roy Orbison. The entire song hinges on a single word in the final line. "You turn around and walk away ---- me." Will the girl walk away FROM the guy or away WITH the guy? And Roy's ending crescendo is simply beautiful.

joe Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

A couple of things:

1. Are all of the people complaining about Beyonce being on this list friends? Why are you so worried?
2. A good song is a good song. Just because it is a "love song," there is no rule that it has to be slow. I included "My Love" by Justin Timberlake and T.I. because it is a really good song, that makes you want to dance, but also all about being in love.
My choices:
Sweet Thing by Chaka Khan and Rufus
Lyzel in E Flat by Jill Scott
The Sweetest Thing by Lauryn Hill
Hopeless by Dionne Farris
Charlene by Anthony Hamilton
Orange Moon by Erykah Badu
Slow Dance by John Legend
Ghetto Love by Jaheim
Fortunate by Maxwell
Practice Makes Perfect by LaToya London
The Fact Is (I Need You) by Jill Scott
No More Rain (In this Cloud) by Angie Stone
Crazy by Javier
My Love by Justin Timberlake and T.I.
Far Away by Kindred: The Family Soul
Forever, For Always, For Love by Lalah Hathaway
Fortunate by Lathun
I Found My Everything by Mary J. Blige
My Funny Valentine by Mindy Doo

denny Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

Such Great Heights - Postal Service "I think that it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images"

Bring Me To Life - Evanescence "My spirit's sleeping somehwere cold until you find it there and lead it back home" (a far better Goth love song than The Cure)

By Your Side - Sade "When you're lost and you're alone, and you can't get back again, I will find you darling, and I'll bring you home"

Crazy For You - Madonna "I'm crazy for you, touch me once and you'll know it's true"

The Other Side - Scissor Sisters "If it takes another life, I'll wait for you on the other side"

My First, My Last, My Everything - Barry White (I think the title says it all)

Time After Time - Eva Cassidy's version, which, by virtue of her peerless voice and the simple acoustic guitar, is far more heartbreaking than Cyndi's

...and nothing by The Carpenters?!? No Close to You, no We've Only Just Begun? NOTHING?!?! I swoon every time I hear Karen's voice.

Bronxmom Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:57 AM EST

My vote for the greatest love song, if not the greatest song ever is "Bring it on home to me" Sam Cooke/Lou Rawls" OM ever lovin frickin God I love love love this song..

Majel Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:38 AM EST

The aforementioned "Annie's Song" plus...
"Belonging" by Bread - heartbreakingly sincere about the risks and rewards of opening yourself up to love
"Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts - could be mundane domestic bliss, but the sublime harmonies and sweeping crescendo heading into the final verse sends a chill up my spine every time

rocky Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:24 AM EST

putting "a case of you" all the way at number fifty is mental. it's easily one of the top ten greatest love songs of all time.

Rumpot Deckhand Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:05 AM EST

Bootylicious by Destiny's Child is my love song to Johnny Depp, Hugh Jackman and Orlando Bloom! Rrrraooouuwww!

Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 08:01 AM EST

"I want to know what love is" - foreigner

"Sweet Thing" - Chaka Khan

"Don't Give Up" - Peter Gabriel

Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 07:55 AM EST

Love "You make me feel like a natural woman" - for me, also one of the best songs describing what it is to be lost and depressed - however, my favorite love song, in fact, my favorite single by Aretha Franklin is "Call Me". I had the pleasure of seeing her in concert and having her describe how she came to write it and the whole moment was magical.

tml Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 07:45 AM EST

"CRASH" by DMB defnitely had to be in the top 25-so much longing and emotion (sure there's some crazy obsession too)"Lost for you, I'm so lost..."
This is a song that if either my husband or I hears it on the radio, we will call the other and say "turn it to..."

Luix Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 07:14 AM EST

You forgot to amazingly beautiful but at the same time heart breaking songs ever made:
"Cup of Coffee" by Garbage
"Take a bow" by Madonna

Gord Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 06:43 AM EST

"Song to the Siren" - This Mortal Coil 1987. Anyone who's been in a no-win relationship will identify. The song is beuatifully simplistic and Liz Frazer's vocals? Haunting.

William Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 03:50 AM EST

Thank you for placing Beyonce among your top 50...but Crazy In Love..For Real? In my opinion Dangerously In Love is a much better love song that Crazy In Love. And How in the world was Boyz II Men over looked...they pretty much define the love song!

Dalton Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 02:43 AM EST

Tony Asher wrote the lyrics for God Only Knows! Brian Wilson wrote the music

Rakeem Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 02:24 AM EST

Beyonce deserves her spot and I'm going to defend it whole-heartedly. Even though I think the wrong song was chosen, she deserves a spot. I admire EW's varied taste.

Reem Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 01:21 AM EST

take my breath away - Berlin
everything I do - Bryan Adams

Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 01:17 AM EST

Goodness, nothing by Boyz II Men, Bryan McKnight, Richard Marx, or Bryan Adams??

ajb Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 01:08 AM EST

So Amazing (Luther Vandross)
Back at One (Brian McKight)
Feel the Fire (Peabo Bryson)
Love Ballad (LTD)
I'm Wishin' on a Star (Atlantic Starr)
Dirty Mind (Prince)

Notice most of these songs are from the 70's and 80's? That's not an accident, these songs have passion, sincerity and truth at the core. So Amazing, not a minute or sad day have I had since you came my way (Vandross), Every time I see you I just want to lay you down (Prince), I'm wishing on a dream to find out what it means (Atlantic Starr). The lyrics, the melodies, these are the songs that are classics and will always work on a romantic play list.

spmsmith Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

The Water is Wide (Sarah McLachlan)
Till the Rivers All Run Dry (Don Williams)
Time After Time (Eva Cassidy cover)
Tougher than the Rest (Bruce Springsteen)
True Colors (Cyndi Lauper or Phil Collins cover)
We Live for Love (Pat Benetar)
When You Say Nothing At All (Alison Krauss cover)
You Go to My Head (Oscar Peterson & Louis Armstrong)
You Raise Me Up (Secret Garden or Josh Groban covers)
You're My Best Friend (Don Williams)

I think it's great when people add their own lists... I end up learning about many great songs that I never knew existed!

spmsmith Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 11:38 PM EST

These are ones that I'd have added (I don't think anyone's mentioned them yet):

Alright For Now (Tom Petty)
Angels (Robbie Williams)
Beloved One (Ben Harper)
Broken Arrow (Rod Stewart)
By My Side (Ben Harper)
Crystal (Fleetwood Mac)
Don't Know Much (Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville)

Have a Little Faith in Me (John Hiatt)
Heaven (Bryan Adams)
I'm Lost in You (Rod Stewart)

The Power of Love (Jennifer Rush)
The Promise (Tracy Chapman)
The Rose (Bette Midler)
The Search is Over (Survivor)
(continued)

"Please Forgive Me" & "Do I Have to say the Words" by Bryan Adams.

"You're the Best Thing" by the Style Council

John Kilzer's "Memory in the Making"

Melissa and Blue Sky - The Allman Brothers

Danna Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 10:59 PM EST

"Careless Whisper" - Wham!
Hello... George Michael + saxophone = awesome love song.

Stephen Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 10:36 PM EST

"I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing," by Aerosmith. A heartwrenching ballad which could have gotten lost in a crappy blockbuster if it weren't for Steve Tyler's searing vocals.

Mark Morsfield Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 10:34 PM EST

Good picks on the top 25. The only other two I'd include would be "The Way You Look Tonight" by Tony Bennett and "L.O.V.E." by Nat King Cole.

Christian Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 10:19 PM EST

CRAZY FOR YOU - MADONNA

No list of love songs is complete without it.

Lana Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 10:17 PM EST

I know a lot of professional critics will be bummed about this but there are some pretty good emo music you just can't put aside. My votes go to:

* "Only One" - Yellowcard
* "Brighter Than Sunshine" - Aqualung
* "Hey There Delilah" - Plain White T

To name a few. When these oftentimes lovelorn troubadours turn their angst around, you just feel the like they want to shake the person and say, "Damn it! I love you!"

Ryan Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 10:01 PM EST

Dear Popwatch,
I had a great time going through your very diverse list of awesome love songs. I had forgotten there are so many. The only ones I would have included in the list would have been two of my all-time favorite songs about love:
"Name" by Goo Goo Dolls
and "Passenger Seat" by Death Cab For Cutie. Thank you for your never ending coverage of everything that is POP!

Jackie Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 09:53 PM EST

She's the one - Robbie Williams
Something Stupid - Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman duet is better than the Sinatra original

but nice pick with #1, The Beach Boys God Only Knows, if only because it's the ending (and opening) song for Love Actually, probably THE BEST romantic comedy ever.

Stephen Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 09:47 PM EST

Calm down people, and don't be outraged towards Beyonce. This list (or one quite similar) came out years ago. Why so shocked?

Beautiful Boy - John Lennon
Love Song - Tesla
Why - Annie Lennox
On Fire - Bruce Springstein
Lullaby - The Dixie Chicks
I Drove All Night - Cyndi Lauper's version
Last Worthless Evening - Don Henley
Delicate - Damien Rice

* This Year's Love - David Gray
* The Luckiest - Ben Folds
* Whenever You Come Around - Vince Gill
* Have I Told You Lately - Van Morrison
* Annie's Song - John Denver
* In My Life - The Beatles

perfect love songs.

"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" -- Roberta Flack

"Always and Forever" -- Heatwave

"I Only Have Eyes For You" -- The Flamingoes

"True" -- Spandau Ballet

David Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 09:02 PM EST

Dear Popwatch, why don't you just put Beyonce on top of every list you ever created?!?! It's so obvious that you're biased towards her. Crazy in Love?! Yuck! Didn't one of your bloggers just said he had enoungh of Beyonce? Don't you ever develop Beyonce-fatigue?! Sheesh!! And what about love songs from Madonna and Mariah!? Boo EW!!

kel Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

u2 "with or without you." come on! it's the ross and rachel song for us 90s kids!

Rose Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:45 PM EST

Did the Elton John song that goes "Hold me closer Tony Danza." make the list? I should check.

Lesha Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

Another one, it just popped up on my I-tunes

English Rose- The Jam.

peanutty Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

What about Sarah McLachlan? "Ice Cream" is a simple, happy song about love.

Joel Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

I love and hate these lists - it's so subjective! What lyrics speak the most to you? That's what makes a great love song. So, EW's list isn't 'wrong', if anything just a little full of itself trying to be 'cool' (Mary J. Blige has two songs in 50 - the Beatles only have one).

So for what it's worth...

1) Jesus, Etc. - Wilco (I could cry at how pathetic Jeff is for wanting to make his girl happy)
2) Friday I'm in Love - The Cure (Supremely joyful in its exploration of fickle adore)
3) In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel (EW did get some right)
4) Crash into Me - Dave Matthews Band (a mushy love song from a guy's point of view - brilliant)
5) God Only Knows - The Beach Boys (though I take it down a few notches now that it's the theme to "Big Love")
6) Black Cadilacs - Modest Mouse (as confused and as sweet as Issac Brock has ever been)

and many, many more...

Clint Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:36 PM EST

What about, "My Heart Goes On." by Celine Dion?

vickys Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:35 PM EST

Always and Forever by Heatwave is the best love song ever. Can't believe you didn't mention that. Your pick of Crazy in Love totally surprises me.

stevie Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:33 PM EST

SHES GOT A WAY - Billy Joel....i mean come on are you guys kidding me

MIMI Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

I can't believe you didn't include "I Only Have Eyes for You"
....from the opening "sh-bop, sh-bop...are the stars out tonight/i don't know if it's cloudy or bright/'cause I only have eyes for you, dear"....it is an instant and forever classic song with a beautiful arrangement.

B Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:30 PM EST

ONE MORE

KENNY LOGGINS - DANNY'S SONG

And if you find she helps your mind, buddy, take her home,
Don't you live alone, try to earn what lovers own.

Laurie Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

I cannot believe you put Beyonce in that list. Dude. "Crazy in Love" and "Unchained Melody" are about as far apart as "The Anna Nicole Show" and "Citizen Kane." Having them in the same list breaks the laws of all that is good and right.

B Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:22 PM EST

Love These Arms of Mine is on the list

-Bon Jovi I'll be there for you
-I Love You Climax Blues Band (come on!)
-That's What Love is for amy grant
-aqualung - brighter than sunshine
-elton john and kiki d - don't go breakin my heart!!

S Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

"So in Love" - Curtis Mayfield

don't know why that song is not #1 on every list...

Jamie Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

I'm offended that "Everything I do" by Bryan Adams isn't on this list! It made the cheese list but not this one? Come on...seriously?! This is a very sweet song and I'm going to sing it in my mom's wedding next year! I just can't believe it didn't make the list!
Also, what about "I want to be your everything" by Keith Urban? That was the song we played in our wedding! Also "From this Moment" by Shania Twain!
This list blows. You guys suck...I'll just stick with my own list thanks!

Rick Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

Thanks you for including both Talking Heads [Naive Melody] and The Cure [Just Like Heaven]. My 2 favorites.

Jacqueline Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

Is this 50 Best Love Songs of the Rock Era? Otherwise, where's Frank Sinatra??????? Time After Time, Angel Eyes, All the Way? I could go on . . . .

Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:11 PM EST

You look wonderful tonight by Eric Clapton

Lesha Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

Angie W.
I think Come Pick Me Up, is a great though not conventional love song... most of his songs are. (When the Stars go Blue, Firecracker, Tonight...)

As for To Be Alone With You. I love the song to pieces, but I agree with your friend that it's about Jesus love. :)

Scott S Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

These are great choices, folks:
"Thank You" by Led Zeppelin
"Only You" by Yaz
"Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison
"Fell in Love with a Girl" by The White Stripes

Here's my additions:
"Kissing You" by Des'ree
"Forgive Me Love" by Alanis Morissette (the hidden track on Jagged Little Pill)

These last two are forgotten gems which should be remembered. Kudos on including Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You", The Roots' "You Got Me", and The Zombies' "This Will Be Our Year". "God Only Knows" is a deserving number one.

But really, Beyonce is better than "Your Song" or "Time After Time"? I mean, I'm a huge Beyonce fan, but REALLY?

Jalenfan Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

Okay list-try these on:
By Your Side-Sade
Superhuman-Ginuwine
Love Song-The Cure
Don't Give Up-Peter Gabriel
I Can't Let Go-Anthony Hamilton
The Best I Ever Had & Good Bye Again-Vertical Horizon
Love W/Out a Limit-Mary J Blige
Lost W/O You-BeBe & CeCe Winanns
One Moment More-Mindy Smith

E.B. Berman Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:07 PM EST

"Hey Julie" by Fountains of Wayne. Simple, sweet, melodic, true. A song for the girl who makes all the rest of it OK.

Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Where is Ministry and Slayer? I lost my virginity to Season's in the Abyss.

Larry Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

And how can anyone forget Alanis Morissette's "Everything." The love she describes there is the love we all want and hopefully have felt and will one day get in return. Also check out "Simple Together," if you have a heart this ballad will surely break it.

AnthonyCW Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:51 PM EST

I was very happy to see Alicia Keys and Beyonce on the list, but I would have added Key's "You Don't Know My Name" and could've taken Beyonce's "Dangerously in Love" in place of the other. I think that's a song a lot of people of my generation will be singing at weddings and such for a while.
OOH, while I'm at it, Christina Aguilera's "Without You" is one of my other faves, hate that it didn't make it.

Kara Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

Not a bad list, although I'd definitely add a few.

"The Luckiest," by Ben Folds (I wish I'd heard this before I got married...)
"Something So Right" by Paul Simon
"Oh" by Dave Matthews
"Every Thug Needs a Lady" by Alkaline Trio
"Grow Old With Me" by John Lennon
"I Won't Spend Another Night Alone" by The Ataris (c'mon, if "I'd rob a Kwikie Mart for you" doesn't say undying devotion, what does??)
"I'll Catch You" by The Get Up Kids (who's to say that the best love songs have to be from widely-known bands?)

Larry Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:44 PM EST

Michael Buble's "Home." My ex hated the song (thought it was cheesy but he wasn't the sentimental type) but he never knew how much I used to cry during our endless breakups and that song would come on the radio. Classic, elegant longing.

Angela W. Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

My list (subtracting the ones EW already has)

1. Constant Craving - k.d. lang
2. Lovesong - The Cure
3. Everybody Here Wants You - Jeff Buckley
4. Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen (but really there are many good versions)
5. Pulse - Ani DiFranco
6. Infected - Bad Religion (it's romantic for punk)
7. Lover's Spit - Broken Social Scene
10. Just What I Needed - The Cars
11. Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
12. I Only Have Eyes For You - Flamingos
13. All That I Can Say - Mary J. Blige
14. Silly Love Songs - Paul McCartney & Wings
15. Sour Times - Portishead
16. Such Great Heights - The Postal Service
17. Come Pick Me Up - Ryan Adams (not entirely romantic, per se, but still very much a love song)
18. My Cherie Amour - Stevie Wonder
19. Could It Be I'm Falling In Love - The Spinners
20. To Be Alone With You - Sufjan Stevens (although I have a friend who is pretty sure this song is about loving Jesus, so maybe it doesn't count...)
21. Black Star and/or True Love Waits - Radiohead

Rob Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

Take This Waltz - Leonard Cohen

Broadway Baby Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

I also wanted to add "Hymn to Her" by the Pretenders. It's not about typical couples but a tremendously beautiful ode to motherly love... makes me cry everytime I hear it.

anon. Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

"We Belong Together." While it may be seen as a break-up ballad, MiMi's voice rips into the simple lyrics with every ounce of passion in her body. By the end, I even wanted that dude from "Prison Break."

Jenny Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

Since you included "In Your Eyes", I'm a happy woman!

pai Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

My mom's gonna be peeved that you left out Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight.

jane-atlanta Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

"Paradise By the Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf;
"Love Me Again" by Rita Coolidge;
"In My Life" by the Beatles - I really wanted to have this played at my wedding, but we had a civil ceremony along with 30 other couples, and I'd like it played at my funeral.

Chris Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

Maybe I've been brainwashed by Top 40 radio, but Rihanna's "Umbrella" is a great little love song and an instant classic that will be remembered for-eva-eva-eva-eh-eh-eh.

kats Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

Love these lists. Suggestions for future lists:

Post Break-Up I - You wrecked me flavor

Post Break-Up II - You suck and I'm so much better off without you flavor

Lust Songs

Unrequited Love Songs

Friendship Songs

Happy Songs

scottel Tue, Jul 24, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

Yes, Aretha deserves to be on the list with Natural Woman, but what about:

Ain't No Way (for me to love you if you won't let me). One of the most haunting love songs ever.

Daydreaming. So simple, so understated, so seductive.

Say a Little Prayer. It'll take you right to heaven.

Share Your Love With Me. A lover's heartfelt plea.
