The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 21)

Jun 28, 2007, 11:23 AM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: PopWatch Confessional

Tony_l I've accepted that I'm a slightly excitable person, meaning: If I like something, I really like it; and if I don't, I can still usually find something to appreciate in it anyway. I suppose it's even one of the qualities I've come to like most about myself in recent years. But this past week, I've had such strong reactions to things that I've begun to question whether I'm normal. As usual, I turn to you, PopWatchers, to make me feel sane. I share my moments, you share yours.

• Last Saturday, I saw my first ad for the July 7 Lifetime Movie Network premiere of Destination: Infestation, a film about an airplane overrun by ants. ANTS! It stars Antonio Sabato Jr. (pictured), and did I mention that it's called Destination: Infestation? I got chills and sat there repeating the title to myself, out loud, for a good ten seconds. (Note to LMN: You really should be advertising this on your website. I would've linked.)

• On Monday, NBC should have had a camera on me while I watched episode 2 of Age of Love and put the live feed in a little box on the bottom left of the screen. It was the best workout I've had in months. I was beating the couch with a pillow (when I wasn't using one of my hands to press the mute button — like when Tessa said she had "great morals and great thoughts"). I then called my friend Eva in L.A. and spent another hour convincing her that she had to watch, if only to see what I may have called "the best moment of TV ever" — the scene in the hot tub where bachelor Mark Philippoussis and his bikini'd twentysomething "kittens" sat in painfully awkward silence as he looked like he wanted to kill himself. (Watch the episode here.)

• Finally, on Tuesday, I went to a screening of the upcoming feature documentary King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (in theaters August 17). It's the story of two men's epic battle to be recognized as the highest scorer on Donkey Kong. At one point, when challenger Steve Wiebe prepares to do battle, "Eye of the Tiger" plays. I was so pumped up for him that I air-boxed to the opening beats. Who am I? And if any of the four other people in the screening room were rooting for gaming legend Billy Mitchell, I apologize if you overheard me turn to my friend Ian and say, "Suck it, Billy!"

Your turn. Have you had a strong reaction to a TV or movie moment that kinda scared you?

Strepsi Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 02:08 AM EST

You had me at "Antonio Sabato Jr." He's on the really like list -- man I have sat through some dreck for that man. Meaning, currently reruns of the entire series of "Earth 2". That much.

So You Think You Can Dance has me clapping at the good ones and leaping off the couch at the results.

On the can't stand it list, Adam Sandler. Even a trailer will make me change the channel. His pubescent rage trapped in Jerry Lewis' body (and I mean the 50-year-old Jerry Lewis) makes me die inside a little.

Martha Sun, Jul 1, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

Hey NineDaves, me too! AI leaves me cold but I love SYTYCD and have been obsessing about it for a while now. Probably because it's summer, my husband is away and I have little better to do... ;-)

Sarah Sat, Jun 30, 2007 at 10:14 AM EST

Putting it on my list as we speak! Thanks, Kats!

kats Sat, Jun 30, 2007 at 08:15 AM EST

Sarah~ I didn't understand all the hatred for "Kingdom of Heaven" either. It wasn't the greatest movie of all time or anything but it was entertaining and you know, it had Orlando! Don't know if I could stand him being disfigured either so I might have to skip the other one too! Also agree that Eric Bana was a nice addition to "Troy". Been listening to U2 Vertigo Tour on dvd this morning. I would definitely recommend that as a U2 fan. My husband bought it for me a while back. They do some old stuff and their new stuff is definitely worthwhile. Killer version of "An Cat Dubh" and the encore rendition of "Original of the Species" is AMAZING!

Sarah Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:06 PM EST

kats: Yeah, Elizabethtown is not my favorite Orlando film either. The American accent doesn't suit him AT ALL. The music in the movie is good, tho. Troy is total eye candy, indeed (Eric Bana also quite yummy!). I'm also addicted to Kingdom of Heaven and am still disappointed at the bad rap it's taken. It's no Gladiator, but still it wasn't as horrible as critics made it out to be. Have you seen Haven yet? I haven't, but I don't think I'd enjoy watching Orlando disfigured. Still, nothing compares to his work as Legolas (especially with that bow & arrow!). My favorite scene is the one in Moria during the Orc attack w/ the cave troll. Still gives me goosebumps even tho I've seen it a bazillion times!

bill Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:47 PM EST

Honestly, it's amazing these days when anything that might provoke a reaction hasn't been hyped and ruined beforehand. So it's uaually the less popular fare that can still pack a punch for me. The only time I remember yelling in stunned disbelief and anxiety recently (aside from all of season five of 24) was the last episode of Lisa Kudrow's HBO series The Comeback. For anyone who hasn't seen it, that't all I'll say. except this is one that really pulls the rug out from under you. BRILLIANT.

doublefeh Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 08:58 PM EST

to this day..I cannot listen to the music soundtrack of Halloween. It creeps me out something fierce..I can't stand it!!!!

kats Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 05:32 PM EST

Sarah~ Maybe I'll check it out from the library. I definitely got my Orlando crush from the first LOTR. I even rewatched "Blackhawk Down" (a great movie but hard to watch) just to figure out who he was and what role he played. The only movie of his that I've been unable to sit through was the one with Kirsten Dunst because I was bored. "Troy" was quite the treasure, Orlando and Brad...yum! And of course Pirates, Orlando and Johnny! Good for the eyes!

Still not over it... Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

I kid you not - I called every member of my family and most of my friends to demand that they watch the end of the Six Feet Under series finale. I wept and sobbed and blubbered as I watched those final scenes. For days after I was haunted by it; even dreaming about it. Seriously. A bit too involved, I'd say! Even if you never watched the series, it was still amazing. I know this because I made my sister watch it with me - she had never seen the show and she also sobbed like a baby. I'm just sayin'...

Charley Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

For some reason, the music that's played in the movie "Scanners" when Michael Ironside is scanning his final victim at the end freaks me out. I actually have to leave the room or have the volume muted during the scene because I just get gripped with panic and feel a need to hide. Bizaree reaction, especialy considering that I have yet to make it through the movie in one sitting....

NineDaves Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:04 AM EST

Every episode of So You Think You Can Dance has me off my seat, screaming at the television for some reason or another. Sometimes I'm going my best Mary Martin impression, other times I'm booing at the bad performances. Such a great show!

Julie Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 08:09 AM EST

I completely lose it every time I see the end of Dances With Wolves where the fierce Indian warrior called Wind In His Hair is shouting at John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) from the canyons, "Dances With Wolves. I am Wind In His Hair. Do you see that I am your friend? Can you see that you will always be my friend?"! It's a deep, huge, full-body racking sob that just erupts from within me. I've seen it countless times and I have the same reaction each viewing, even when I come in during the middle of the movie or just before the end.

Amber Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 10:29 PM EST

I get horribly excited watching The Price is Right. I'll be screaming at the TV "2,2, not 3, you idiot!" right along with the studio audience. And if they happen to win, especially something big, I will literally run around the living room rooting for them.

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 09:39 PM EST

Kats, Astin's book might be worth a look if your library has a copy, but I wouldn't waste money on it, and it really will annoy the heck out of you. Speaking of Orlando, another reason why I had goosebumps the whole time I was watching Pirates COTBP for the first time was because I was so rooting for Orlando's career to really take off. I knew it in my bones that after Pirates, he'd be a huge star (and I'd get to see more of him!) ;) Now if only I could get over to London to see him in his new play "In Celebration." If I hear that play's coming to NYC, I'll be having another hysterical moment!

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 09:16 PM EST

The musical Rent was a huge part of my teenage years. I bonded with highs school and college friends over that musical. I can't express to you how happy I was when I heard the first chords of "Seasons of Love" during the opening credits of the movie. My endorphins were surging and I starting crying in the movie theater. Luckily, my theater junkie friend was crying along with me, so it was totally acceptable.

Nix Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 09:01 PM EST

This one is recent, and not connected to major pop/art-cultural events like the Sopranos or Oscars or perfect works of art (which I think SHOULD affect us, and deeply, to be worthy of praise): dude, when I saw a clip of "Transformers" last night, and Starscream transformed into his jet form? I shook and nearly cried. Now THAT is weird -- a summer action movie! Based on toys! By Michael Bay! Never thought it would get such a visceral *positive* reaction from me. But it did. And now I'm waiting to see it.

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 08:57 PM EST

Does anyone else watch "Ninja Warrior" on G4? Whenever I watch someone go through that freakishly difficult obstacle course, I literally stop breathing until they get through. I yell if they fail and fall into the murky water. I squeal and spring off of my couch if they complete the course. This happens everytime I watch this show. I'm certain my roommate thinks I'm crazy.

--

I went to see "Wordplay" in a movie theater (tragic on its own). If you were at th theater that day, you might have seen me yelling in agony when the perpetual underdog mistakenly forgot a word in the final round and for the THIRD TIME IN A ROW, ended up in 3rd place. Dag nabbit! In addition, I was the one cheering and clapping from the action of the final round. Lest you forget--it's a movie about a crossword tournament. What is wrong with me?

Ceballos Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 08:00 PM EST

Ep, that's a good one...

I saw "Signs" on opening weekend in theatres, and it was about 35 times better with a packed house eating it up and reacting to everything...especially that moment you mentioned (and when you see the grainy home video footage of the alien in Mexico). That movie's just not the same on TNT...definitely like a top 15 most fun in-theatre experience for me.

kcholt68 Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 07:29 PM EST

A friend of mine got physically ill when "Crash" won the Oscar over "Brokeback Mountain".

Maeve Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 07:23 PM EST

When Mel Gibson's wife Murron was killed in Braveheart...man that got me. I did not in any way think that would happen.

Jill Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

I yelled, actually YELLED at a co-worker who suggested that Sarah Jessica Parker should have stayed with Baryshnikov (sp?) on SATC. She was an idiot to say that, but still....

Brie Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:26 PM EST

I admit, I don't normally get too caught up in the emotional part of TV shows: they often fail to provide me with any real surprises. But there are three times in recent memory that I was completely over the top as a viewer.

Count me in with the people who cited the "Casino Night" episode of The Office. I was waiting for Jim to mention the transfer, so I didn't expect him to profess his love, and the kiss happened so late in the hour, my jaw dropped and I gasped. I thought the show was going to end with Michael- but then that kiss led to me jumping around my living room.

The finale of the Amazing Race when Uchenna and Joyce beat Rob and Amber had me on the edge the whole night. I was going crazy, begging along with them for money so they could pay for their cab. Romber couldn't win.

And the post Super Bowl episode of Grey's Anatomy. I was so engrossed, I didn't pay attention the the odd time it started, so when it ended (with the to be continued) I yelled "No!"

kats Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:07 PM EST

Sarah~ I have to admit that I didn't know he'd written a book about the experience. When you first mentioned it I was thinking "wow, have to read that". But given what you said about the book I think I can skip it. He did a great job in the movie but really get over yourself already! And, don't be picking on my boy Orlando ~ I SO love him!

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 05:11 PM EST

kats, it's true, Samwise is an awesome literary character. Which reminds me of another screaming at the top of my lungs moment when I was reading Sean Astin's book, "There and Back Again" where he says how stupid and cheesy he thought Legolas' "action figure" moment was in ROTK, taking down the oliphant (he all but said he was jealous of Bloom for getting that part right out of theater school while Astin could never achieve the fame he wanted). That whole book p**ed me off because his attitude was so condescending at times and he second guessed so much of what Peter Jackson was doing, even though he knew basically nothing of LOTR (hadn't even read the books when he was up for the part of Samwise). He went on and on about how he thought it was SO unfair that he didn't get the Best Supporting Actor nomination for the Oscars, blah blah blah. It's totally mean, but I was thrilled when his annoying character was killed off on last season's 24. Yah! Stick it to ya, you ungrateful bastard!

Kel Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 04:52 PM EST

This is so embarassing, but "Chronicles of Narnia" were my favorite books as a child, so when I saw the trailer for the first time, I just cried and cried. It was just so perfect and just like I imagined. Sigh!

lilly Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

I am SO right there with the pirates 3 people.
I have a buffer that sees movies first and reports to me any unexpected sadness or non-happy endings (thank you MY GIRL for making that a necessity) and well my buffer totally failed to tell me about the end. I totally fired her. Of course she is my sister so I will probably for give her but COME ON thats supposed to be happy. I think not.

Ep Sato Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 04:22 PM EST

Sopranos Spoilers:

Speaking of the Sopranos, I felt literally depressed for a few days after they killed off Chris Moltesanti. I thought it was a dream or a hoax at first and it still makes me sad to know one of my favorite tv characters of all time died in such an anti-climactic manner. On the other hand, I was totally high fiving when they killed off Leotardo.

And Ceballos, I had a similar jump out of the chair moment with "Signs". That movie didn't interest me at all for the entire flick until Mel Gibson peeked under the door. When those three fingers poked through I actually yelled "Oh SH*T!" at the top of my lungs. I swear, people in Reykjavik could have heard me.

McMahon Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 03:58 PM EST

I will second everyone screaming at Lost. I'm usually yelling "Oh snap!" or "What the??" When Michael killed Libby and Ana Lucia, I dug my fingernails in my husband's arm.

CM Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

I completely broke down at the end of the season finale of "Ugly Betty." I was so embarrassed for crying over a show that my sobs came out as a weird half laugh, half bawling hybrid. Needless to say, my boyfriend was very confused and a little scared.

kats Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

This one is kind of embarassing, because I misheard something on the t.v. Jerome Bettis (formerly of the Superbowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers - and yes I know they didn't win this year) recently lost his father. When I heard it on NFL Network I only caught part of it and thought Jerome himself had died. I instantly had a breakdown on my living room floor. Needless to say I was quite relieved to learn it wasn't him, though still sad about his dad.

Sarah~ Different parts of LOTR killed me too, especially when Frodo lost faith in Samwise. Seriously, was there ever a better best friend in all of literature?

Holly Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 03:02 PM EST

I was DEVASTATED and angry when Nate died on Six Feet Under. And I didn't have HBO at the time so I read about it online.

new yorker girl Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

Let me preface this by saying I from Ghana, and soccer is THE sport of the world (aside from the US of course. Last summer, after a hearbraking loss to Italy in Round 1 of the world cup, I was glued to the tv early Saturday morning to watch Ghana play the czech republic. I was yelling at the tv and kicking and screaming tips as though the players could hear me and when that first goal came along, I was ecstatic, but the second was the one that really got me. I jumped out of the couch yelling, "That's what I'm talking about, That's what I'm talking about" It was GLORIOUS!!! My mother who happened to be sleeping woke up in shock because she thought I was in some sort of danger. I will never forget that Saturday morning.

Ahleese Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:33 PM EST

The moment on Friends when Rachel realizes Ross is her lobster.. after they watched the Prom Video..
*sobs*
I also get pretty angry when characters are killed or leave the show... Brandon Walsh, Jes (from GG), Jackie Jr... the list is endless really.

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

I also can't listen to Annie Lennox sing Into The West without bursting into tears. Nor can I read certain parts of the LOTR books without tearing up, especially this part from ROTK:
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

Thanks, kats. You're always there to back me up! I also cried (to my utter surprise) through most of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King when my sister and I saw it on opening day. We're both total LOTR fanatics who were living for these movies, and for that to be the last one, and how superbly it was done, we both sat there bawling like babies. Especially when the Rohirrim show up at the Fields of Pelennor and the horns are blowing, just as I imagined from the book: 'Then out of the North there came help beyond hope, and the horns of the Rohirrim were first heard in Gondor.' See, I'm getting all choked up again.

Ames Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

My biggest melt down was a sports moment I'm not entirely over. But for truly embarassing pop culture, I'd have to go with on 90210 when Kelly and Brandon called off their wedding. I tuned in for a silly fairy tale wedding, and then they just split up! It sounds dumb (even then) but I just couldn't handle it.

Sadie Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:19 PM EST

I clapped and had a tear or two in my eye at the end of this season's Office. And to this day, I cannot watch Unsolved Mysteries (still in syndication, amazingly enough) because the music CREEPS ME OUT! MTV's Sweet Sixteen triggers a number of discussions of "kids today" heavilty tinged with disgust. And I refuse to watch Wheel of Fortune because the contestants are so stupid.

JamFan Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

I seriously watched the season 2 finale of the Office about 20 times. I kept it on TIVO in case I had a bad day. One of the best episodes ever.

My other "oh sh*t" moment was when DAUGHTRY got canned on American Idol. The look on his face made me realize the absolute genius that can be reality TV. He did have the last laugh, though. So far.

Ashley Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

I would have to say reading the final chapter of Harry Potter 6. I have never ever cried while reading a book or watching a television show. movies are a different story. But for those of you who have not read the 6th novel, i had tears in my eyes and was sobbing for literally the rest of the day. i cannot imagine what mess i will be in when the seventh book comes out =[

kats Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:09 PM EST

Sarah ~ I agree that killing of Charlie was a huge mistake. I think I would have been angrier if I hadn't thought it was inevitable.

As far as the "Destination: Infestation" it's hard to get too riled up about anything starring Antonio Sabato Jr. Ever since his Jagger / Janet Jackson video days I've been willing to watch him do, well just about anything ; )

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Am I the only one who was ENRAGED when they killed off Charlie on Lost? I was screaming "I HATE YOU JJ ABRAMS! I'LL NEVER WATCH YOUR STUPID SHOW AGAIN!" at the top of my lungs when they did that. Stupid blighter. How dare they kill my Hobbit!

Hayley Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

I seriously had a coniption when Jim and Pam kissed on The Office. There were people I didn't know well in the room, and I'm still embarrassed to think about it. IT WAS JUST SO EXCITING!

Ceballos Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

I can understand people quitting on "Lost" at the end of season 2/the beginning of Season 3...all I can say is that I'm glad I stuck with it because the last four or five episodes of season 3 are some of the best the show has ever produced.

susanarosa Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

When Hurley drove the bus out of the woods and into the others, I stood up on my couch. Then when Sayid broke the guys neck with his ankles I yelled "Expletive yeah!" with the fist pump.

I also yell expletives at the tv during Jeopardy. A lot.

Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:34 PM EST

I actually made a 'Squee' sound when Jim kissed Pam on The Office. As a hetero-male this gave me cause for concern.

Elaine Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:27 PM EST

EP, I had to quit watching Lost before this season even started. The stupidity and obvious lack of direction were getting to me so badly that it came down to mental health or quit Lost. I quit watching Lost. I think if I still were, my liver would have long ago quit in protest. I tried to watch some episodes in the 3rd season, but it was just as bad as I'd remembered it being when I originally quit.

Other scenes: Adriana's eventual death - Sopranos (I knew it was coming but still).
Band of Brother - The concentration camp.
This season's Grey's Anatomy finale brought out so much rage and anger. That is tops on worst ending ever.
Work Out - The episodes dealing with Doug's death. I was crying so hard. He was such a nice, good guy.

to NBW Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

I am so with you on not explaining who the makers of the map were. It was such a big part of the book, that I couldn't believe it was never explained in the movie.

Nat X Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

Oh, I'm really excited about Destination: Infestation cuz that's an awesome name. But I'm actually really looking forward to that "New Amsterdam" show on FOX, even though it'll probably be terrible. But I loved "Forever Knight," so I think it'll work.

Nat X Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

Um, seeing a pic of Antonio Sabato, Jr. just got me really excited cuz "Earth 2" is my favorite show of all time. The first season of "24" was so stressful for me. Every episode, I would end up inching closer and closer to the tv until I was kneeling in front of it, my heart racing. Ice water flowed through my veins recently when I asked some friends if they wanted to borrow my Firefly DVDs (cuz DUH who wouldn't?), and they were like, "What's that?" I get way too into "American Idol," too. I cried with Fantasia during, "Summertime."

Feh Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

I know this has been discussed to death..but the last scene of the Sopranos..rage was the least of my emotions..@#$^%%^#$

Anonymous Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

Thanks so much for playing along Gingercat. You're fun.

Fatima Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:10 PM EST

So You Think You Can Dance puts me in a euphoric state for 2 hours every Wednesday where I sit with a giant childlike grin and unleash my inner Abdul with countless mutterings of "I LOVE EVERYONE RIGHT NOW!!"

JS Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:05 PM EST

The second-to-last season finale of "Ed," where they weren't sure if the show would be renewed or not, so it could have (and maybe should have) been the series finale, made me cry for about an hour.

And this year's season finale of Dancing With the Stars--I was shaking and had to hold a pillow over my eyes. Yay Apolo!

paige Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

I hate award shows! but of course, since im such a glutton for punishment I watch for sheer amazment of the crap theyre gonna honor... and then proceed with throwing pillows at the t.v.

Aaron Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

Any episode of the Amazing Race is a complete emotional roller coaster from me. I begin every episode on the couch and end every episode on the floor. For a while I had to watch it in a common room at college and let people walk through while I whimpered, shouted, groaned, and busted out such gems as: "If you let those retarded models on the plane, I vow to never fly on Air Belgium! Ever!"

Cassie Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

Award shows always get me. Most recently, I found myself shouting and crying for joy when Genie Francis won the Daytime Emmy for Best Supporting Actress.

hbosch Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

I remember very vividly staring open mouthed and screaming no way when Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan for the Best picture Oscar..my family just stared at me but I couldn't believe it, to this day even

Jenny Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

I started bawling so hard at the end of Million Dollar Baby, even though I knew what was coming (thanks, New York Times, for spoiling it!) I can't remember having such an emotional reaction to a movie.

jst Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

ugh, spoiler? what the hell r u talking about? if you haven't seen the movie by now then you shouldn't complain when someone says something about it. idiot!

Vicky Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:38 PM EST

I'm a big fan of Angel and David Boreanaz. And I'm usually on top of new shows for the fall season. But I had no idea David was doing Bones. So when I saw the first commericial I started screaming "Boreanaz, Boreanaz, Boreanaz!!!" My b/f thought I was crazy. Luckily he loves me. We currently both watch Bones!

step Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

For the season 2 finale of The Office, I couldn't watch it live, as I had to go out with a bunch of my friends that night. When I finally got to watch the episode at 2 in the morning (on my 12-inch Powerbook screen), after the screen cut to black after The Kiss, I started sobbing. And didn't stop for like, half an hour. Tears were streaming down my cheeks. It may have been the late hour, it may have been the fact that I was slightly drunk, but I sat there weeping for Jim (and Pam) for way longer than is normal.

I also get really, REALLY into Cash Cab. Yelling answers at the TV. It's pretty much my goal in life to ride in the Cash Cab. Really.

Auriana Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

The trailers...especially the teaser trailers...for the three Star Wars prequels left me with chills. Especially for Revenge of the Sith...the whole, "Vader...Rise" bit. It was so hard trying not to squeal like a school girl and run around the theater with giddy joy. Don't even ask how I was on each of their opening nights.

As much as I hate to admit watching American Idol...I threw things at the tv when Daughtry was voted off.

During the last summer Olympic games I started bawling when this little Chinese gymnest fell off the bars. I honestly couldn't tell you why but I was literally sobbing.

Patrick Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:14 PM EST

Creepiest TV moment ever....at the end of the infamous "Melrose Place" episode when Dr. Kimberly Shaw pulls off her wig and reveals an enormous, hideous scar across her head, signifying she had transformed from a nice, sweet lady into a dangerous psychotic.

Back then, before TV producers hyped everything to the max ("Stay tuned for the shocking conclusion!") and Internet spoilers gave every away all the twists weeks before the airdate, it was an incredbly surprising and deeply disturbing scene. I jumped off my couch, gasped so hard that I couldn't breathe, and then felt chills up and down my whole body.

Kudos to the freakin' brilliant Marcia Cross for scaring the living daylights out of me!

24: when Palmer died...I screamed so loud. After it, I had to stop the tv and rewind few times to believe it!!! And to this day, Tony is not dead, he is just away...

GingerCat Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

My "confession" is that I'm SO OVER getting ironically excited about stuff that I know is really complete crap. Sorry.

Frank Jr. Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. I don't know why I watch that show. The questions are easy, which is why they have to find dumb as dirt people to provide melodrama (ooh, are the 5th graders smarter?). I can't resist screaming at that the contestants as they stumble over the answers.

Hutchy Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

That American History X scene is a good one, my wife literally couldnt watch it, and made me mute the TV. However, there really can only be one choice for guys in their early 30-s: the scene in John Carpenter's The Thing when the guy's chest opens up and bites the doc's arms off. For guys my age, biggest "Holy $hit!!" moment ever.

A Sad Case Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

Not that I'm trying to plug EW (I swear I don't work there), but I had such a 'strong' reaction to the World Series of Pop Culture on VH1 last summer that my boyfriend jumped out of the shower because he thought I was mortally injured from my screaming. Alas, no: One of the contestents couldn't name a Russell Crowe movie or something.

Valerie Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

No one I know wants to watch the Oscars with me, either. Well, I do have strong convictions !!

Patt Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:30 AM EST

The strongest reaction I've had was in "American History X" when Edward Norton makes the guy bite the curb then stomps on his head. I jumped up off the couch, then fell back down on it, then fell off of it, all the time clutching my arms around myself. Gives me the chills just typing this.

CJackson Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

I haven't been able to watch Wheel of Fortune for about 5 years. Ever since a man had an insane amount of money from one spin (he landed on $10,000 and got like, 5 T's or something), the answer was obvious and he STILL got it wrong. I literally screamed at the poor guy and laid down and pounded on the floor for about 10 minutes. Yeah, my husband stayed away from me for a while after that.

Joe C Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

Well, when Jennifer Beals pulled out her bra in that famous scene from Flashdance, I as a 15 year old boy had a STRONG reaction to it!!!!!!!!!!
It still makes me happy. Oh, and when she says later on in the movie, 'So What turns you on?' I really don't remember the rest of the movie, lol.

Ceballos Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

I also saw "Apocalypto" for the first time last weekend, and a random part where a snake takes a chunk out of some guys neck actually made me look away and scream out "Oh...myGod!" (snakes creep me out).

It was notable because it was the first time I'd shown fear while watching a movie with the gf.

No Brand Woman Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

I'm well known amongst friends for being way too much of a spazz at times. I'm not really "allowed" to watch the Oscars and other awards shows because I get way too emotionally involved. I express my upset verbally when the people I feel are deserving don't win and I get way too excited when the people I like do win.
I still go into a bit of a tantrum whenever I talk about the 3rd Harry Potter movie (Prisoner of Azkaban). I was so frustrated by that movie. My fiance says I'm only disappointed in it because it's my favorite book of the series, but I really don't think that's the case. I think it was just badly done and the director was totally wrong for Harry Potter. They didn't explain who the Marauders who created the Marauders Map were, for crying out loud!!!! Why????

Ceballos Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:19 AM EST

Like anon, I got WAY too excited when I first saw the "Transormers" trailer...now whenever my brother and I are in a theater or at home and we see a trailer/commercial for it, i grab him by the front of the shirt and yell "Transformers!!"...(I think this tactic even got my girlfriend halfway interested in the movie)

I also got pumped up after the first full-length trailer for "Live Free or Die Hard." The ads for that movie have become the stuff of semi-legend for me and my brother. We'll randomly quote stuff to each other like bust out "Command Center?! (hearty laugh)" Yeah, we're weird.

Mozz Mendez Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Oh Mandi, I love ya Mandi, because if you didn't know my middle name is "strong reactio to tv or movie that scared me" I have so many examples, but one stands out, years ago when the Kenneth Brannagh film Frankestein came out I went to opening night at one point the monster kills a child, and the nanny of the child was blamed, and rushed through the movies only high impact scene towards a rope high on a tower, where she was going to be hanged. I couldn't believe it, she was innocent and with my heart racing I proceded to let the entire theatre know it by standing up and top of my lungs screaming at the screen "SHE DIDN'T DO IT! MY GOD SHE DIDN'T DO IT!" Let's just say my friends don't like going to the movies with me because of the way I react to them.

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

ugh: I apologize for the spoiler. I got a little carried away there.

JJ Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

I get violently angry when characters I love are killed. Here are some that have boiled my blood:
Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) on Lost. I swore, from season one when he almost died, if they kill my Hobbit, I will forever boycott this series. He's the reason I started watching Lost, and now it's over for me. So bite me, JJ Abrams!!! Should've offed Matthew Fox instead. He's annoyed the hell out of me since Party of Five!
Edgar on 24 last season. So unnecessary.
Haldir in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. It should be illegal to kill elves, especially since they weren't even at Helm's Deep in the book.
Norrington in Pirates: At World's End. He so didn't deserve that.

Ed Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

I hate these new adverts which are placed with the comments!

thanks for the spoiler sans a warning, sarah =\

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

jpt: That is so sweet! Did you see the last Will/Elizabeth scene after the credits? At least it put a positive spin on the ending. I also felt heartbroken when Will was stabbed. I love Orlando, and I can't bear to watch someone run a sword through him, even tho it's just in a movie.

jpt Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

I am a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan, so I was thrilled when my husband and I went to see the third one. About 10 minutes or so from the end of the movie I understood what would happen with Will and Elizabeth and I bawled the rest of the movie. I then got up before the movie was fully over and stormed out of the theatre. When my husband found me, still crying and very pissed off they would end a Disney movie that way, I explained that their relationship hit too close to home. He had no idea what I was talking about and still makes fun of me for it.

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 10:54 AM EST

Mandi, I can feel your pain, because that's EXACTLY how I felt the first time I went to see the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. I sat in the theater on opening day hoping to God the film didn't stink because all the press I read had zero faith in it, and I love Orlando and Johnny to death. I sat there with goosebumps for two hours because the film was so awesome and perfect and exciting and I KNEW it was going to be a huge success. The day they announce there will be a part four I'll be jumping up and down like a 7-year-old and I can't wait!

Frances Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

Deal or No Deal has the power to turn me into a complete lunatic! I will scream at the tv "TAKE THE DEAL" or cover my eyes with a pillow before they open the case.
Anon - right there with you on Transformers. My brothers think I am a complete nerd b/c since I saw the trailer and everytime I see it on TV, I can't shut up about how excited I am to see the autobots and decepticons on the big screen!!!

Ep Sato Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

For starters, Lost's 3rd season. No season of tv has made me yell at the screen more often than this frustrating mess that has made me feel like they make it all up as they go along. And this crap with the Others, who IMHO are the lamest villains ever invented has been making me so mad! How can the Losties be so naive about the Others, and why didn't Jack kill that stupid cult leader when he had a chance? I HATE the Others with such a passion that I'm still 7 episodes behind on the finale (on my tivo). I can barely sit through an episode without yelling obsenities and feeling the need to blog the next day titles like "I'm no longer drinking the Lost Koolade".

Firefly got me jazzed up enough to dress like Jayne Cobb at a few comic book conventions to help promote "Serenity".

Oh, and I yelled out an audible "doobie Doo" when the Burn Notice ad showed Bruce Campbell. I dig that crazy fool enough to tivo anything he's in.

Anon Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

Mandi-

Never fear, your PW friends are here!

My BF makes fun of how spazzed out I get for movies I am really excited for. For example, the first time I saw the Transformers trailer, I jumped off the couch, screaming and replayed it about 90 times.

It is still awsome.

The down side to this is that the movies sometimes are not all they are cracked up to be. (See "The Hulk.")

I will also laugh hysterically at Kathy Griffin's Bravo Show and will replay the really great moments on "Footballer$ Wive$" - Why, oh Why can ABC not make this show work in the US??

to the EW editors Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

please review Chris Brown's remix of "Umbrella!!" I know it has nothing to do w/ this post, but it's horrible!!! Like the remix of "Girlfriend."
