Spot Inspection: Your iPod! (Hall of Shame edition)

Jun 22, 2007, 11:24 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: iPod inspection, Music

Fox_l My all-time favorite episode of Starting Over involved a woman who was asked to sit inside a cardboard box, write down her "issues" on its walls, and then bust her way to the outside as a way to "break down her barriers." Because there are no cardboard boxes in the blogosphere, we can't reenact that stupendously stupid-beautiful moment today, but I've cooked up an exercise that elicits a similar reading on the pop-cultural shame-o-meter. Here's what I want you to do: Take a few minutes to peruse your iPod song list — or paw through your CD collection — and then share the five most shameful songs in your collection. And remember, I wouldn't ask you to dive into the humiliation pool if I wasn't already standing in the deep end, arms outstretched, promising to buy you a pony. Ready... set...jump!

(1) Samantha Fox (pictured), "Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)" Stop judging me! This track was downloaded from a compilation CD called Ladies of the '80s; you, on the other hand, have no excuse for knowing all the words to the chorus.

(2) C-Note, "Wait Till I Get Home" No joke, I might be out of a job by day's end if my boss watches the corresponding video clip at YahooMusic, especially the part where these cut-rate Backstreet Boys bust vaguely obscene moves while delivering the line "bring it on home, daddy." Oh, how I wish I were making that up.

(3) Lita Ford, "Hungry" The musical equivalent of a late-night movie on Cinemax, but 57% less artful.

(4) Patra, "Pull Up to the Bumper" Purchased at the iTunes store in the last 30 days, but in my defense, I'd been drinking a little bit.

(5) Scatman John, "Scatman (Shi-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" This will be blaring from the speakers when I begin my descent into music hell. It burns! It burns!

Thanks to everyone for all of the great lists. So much to add to my collection!

Sarah~ Another one that I forgot that's really good is "Ebony Eyes".

Sarah Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

And Duran Duran's The Wedding Album. That one's really good too!

kats Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:56 PM EST

Sarah~ No, don't know that one. I'll have to check that one out. I've already started downloading some of the things you have listed. I've got to get a pen and paper to this list! Pronto!

moni Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

I have all of N'Sync, "Give me just one night" by 98 degrees (my favorite), "Everybody Dance Now" by C + C Factory, "Sandstorm" by Darude, "I like to move it, move it" by Reel to Real, "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark (before he was Mark Wahlberg the serious actor), BBMak, Blu Cantrell, Eden's Crush, "Sweet Sixteen" by Hilary Duff, "Mandy" by the Jonas Brothers, Justin Guarini (that's right the 1st Idol reject), LAX Gurlz (a group that hasn't even made it yet and probably never will), Ricky Martin, Savage Garden, Stacie Orrico (who? exactly!), "Funky Cold Medina" and "Wild Thing" by Tune Loc, "Here I go again on my own" by Whitesnake, "I want to be bad" by Willa Ford, and "Bust a move" by Young MC. And right now. Right this minute. I'm listening to Hannah Montana's 2nd album on repeat at work. Did I mention I was 21?

I'm putting your suggestions on my list as we speak. Did you ever get Adam Ant's album "Wonderful" from '95? It was pretty darned good! I think I still have it here somewhere....

kats Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 08:34 AM EST

Sarah~ No! Adam Ant was too cool and cute as well, no shame there! Have to admit I haven't checked out the newer Duran Duran the way that I should. I'll have to give it a listen. If you haven't checked out "How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" yet it's definitely worth a listen. It reminds me of their older stuff. I've always been a fan of the stuff of theirs that wasn't as popular like the second side of "Joshua Tree" and "Until the End of the World" off Achtung Baby.

Sarah Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 09:12 PM EST

No, you're not alone! How awesome! I must say, I'm impressed. I loved everything up to and including Achtung Baby as well. Afterward, eh? I also have all my Adam Ant posters and a Mr. Mister poster, both of whom I've seen in concert (used to paint my face like AA in high school, embarrassed to admit! Obesession can be a scary thing!) How do you like the more recent Duran Duran stuff? I'm digging Astronaut a lot!

kats Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 08:22 PM EST

Sarah ~ U2 can hardly do wrong in my eyes although they went through that rather strange phase after Achtung Baby, which I could have lived without. I've seen them five times I think. In 87 in LA (caught them on vacation), and in Syracuse on Joshua Tree and in Albany and Yankee Stadium on Achtung Baby and then at Giants Stadium in 97. I really like "How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" particularly "City of Blinding Lights" and "Original of the Species". But I'm also a huge fan of the really old stuff, Boy, October, War. I don't think I have D2 all dressed in white. I do have a very early poster where they're all wearing jumpsuits and eyeliner and then some from "Seven and the Ragged Tiger". I have all of their lyric books for the first three albums, a tour book from the "Seven and The Ragged Tiger" tour which was a gift from a friend and various photos and teen magazines. All in a footlocker in my basement! I thought I was the only one : )

Sarah Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 07:45 PM EST

Ah, yes, I'm a U2 fan as well. My husband really likes their newer stuff (Beautiful Day, etc.), and I'm a hardcore '80s U2 fan. He and I went to see them at JFK stadium in 1987 during our sophomore year in college (REALLY dating myself now!) for the Joshua Tree tour and then the Zoo TV tour in the early '90s. Which of their concerts have you been to? Re: Duran Duran: do you have the poster with them dressed all in white? Just curious. (I still have mine in my basement ;)

kats Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 06:38 PM EST

Sarah ~ I'm definitely going to check out Duran Duran as soon as possible. Simon's voice is still amazing. I can't believe he still sounds the same after all these years. In my younger years I was all about John Taylor. That man has aged well too. I did see him once at a Power Station concert! I remember sitting in the nosebleeds trading binoculars with my girlfriends. Your husband does sound cool as well. I like what I know of Yes, which I'm sorry to say isn't all that much. Aside from all of my 80's and 90's, the softalicious 70's and all, I've been a huge U2 fan since I was 13.

Sarah Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 06:11 PM EST

Kats: your husband sounds cool! Mine is a total Yes-head (like me!) and loves a lot of the '80s stuff we do, and tons of the obscure '70s stuff, along with disco (but only the good kind, ala ABBA and Bee Gees). My best friend in high school was a total Billy Idol fanatic (we still sing Eyes Without A Face together, I'm on a bus, on a psychedelic trip, reading murder books, and trying to stay hip). And you MUST see Duran Duran if you can. I saw them 7 years ago at Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA and let me tell ya, girl, Simon LeBon has STILL GOT IT AND THEN SOME! It was an awesome show!

kats Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 05:53 PM EST

Sarah~ Yes we are in the same geographical region! My husband was a metal head. Not hairbands, but all about the metal nonetheless. He's still big time into Queen and Kiss. Too funny for a bubble gum pop / U2 girl like me. My first concert was in 84. I saw Billy Idol in Saratoga, New York in an outdoor ampitheater on his Rebel Yell tour with Steve Stephens, it was awesome! I've seen Billy Joel twice, both times in Albany, New York, where I'm from. I'm still dying to see Duran Duran in concert. I never got to when I was a kid and now that they're touring again I just have to go check it out!

Sarah Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 04:10 PM EST

Kats, yes, that song is from Squeeze (my husband owns the CD). If I didn't love you, love you, love you... And Annie Get Your Gun. I love just about any kind of British music from the 80s. English Beat. Psychedelic Furs. Modern English. I'll have to put the Lilo shirt on my shopping list the next time I go to Disney. I love the Stitch ride too, how about you? And at least we're in the same general region of the country. I'm in Allentown, PA (halfway btwn NYC and Philly). Yes, the same one Billy Joel sang about. Which reminds me, that was my first concert in '82-Nylon Curtain tour. Ah, memories!

kats Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 02:03 PM EST

Sarah~ I have most of "The Wedding Singer". "How Soon Is Now" is one of my all time favorite songs. It's just about perfect! Also like Mr. Mr. including "Broken Wings" and Squeeze. Do you remember the song "If I Didn't Love You (I'd Hate You)?" I think that's Squeeze although I'm not entirely sure. The t-shirt was bought at Disney. Might be able to find it at the disney store online. I watch that movie more than my kids do! Yes, I graduated in 88. I'm originally from upstate NY but I live in CT now. Are we in the same region?

Sarah Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

kats, YES, that was me on the Must List! I LOVE Harry Potter (probably more than my kids do!). Where'd you get the Lilo&Stitch shirt? I MUST HAVE ONE! All I have is a Stitch keychain and decal on my car ;) Yeah, the Grosse Pointe Blank soundtrack is the bomb. Also, The Wedding Singer, but I'm sure you already knew that! How about Mr. Mister, Kyrie and Squeeze, Black Coffee in Bed. Brings me back to the wee infant days of MTV pre-cable when I had to stay up til midnight when channel 48 went off the air and MTV came on. You graduated in '88? I wouldn't be surprised if we actually went to the same high school too.

itokazu Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Why hasn't anyone mentioned New Kids on the Block? It just doesn't get any better than "hanging tough"! And due to my love of cheesy cover songs, I also have an album of Japanese raggae artists doing covers of songs from Backstreet Boys, Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, etc.

Some other gems include Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (Crossroads) and Skee-Lo (I wish).

kats Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Sarah~

Yeah! All that love for Lilo & Stitch! "My friends must be punished" I actually have that t-shirt...

I have seen Grosse Pointe Blank but not in a while. Think I might have to buy that one and check out the soundtrack as well.

I think I might have just posted you on the "Must List" as well. Are you a HP fan???

Also, I graduated HS in '88 ;-)

kats Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

wintersux ~ "Play the game and let me do the same. And we're gonna get along, gonna get along fine, watching out for my heart. But when I am near you, near you ain't the place to start...."

Sarah Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 08:15 AM EST

jenjen: don't be ashamed of your Safety Dance ringtone! Play it as loudly (and proudly!) as you can. My ringtone right now is the Jack Sparrow theme from Pirates of the Caribbean. B4 that it was Long Distance Runaround-Yes
wintersux: let me guess, you graduated H.S. in the early-mid 80s? I'm an '86 grad myself!
kats: You're the 1st person I found who likes the Lilo&Stitch soundtrack & movie as much as I do! Hooray! I know I mentioned this B4 but you HAVE to see Grosse Pointe Blank. Awesome movie for people like us ;)

wintersux Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 06:01 AM EST

And now you have a real good idea of how OLD I am. Ah well.

wintersux Tue, Jun 26, 2007 at 06:00 AM EST

My best friend got to be in the Columbia Record Club, that lucky b*tch, and I believe that was how I was introduced to Totally Hot. Gimme whatcha got, ready or not, my love's totally hot. Wow, pithy lyrics.

jenjen Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 10:44 PM EST

Kats and Sarah... AWESOME TASTES!!!! I must admit that I had "Safety Dance" as my ringtone for a few minutes. Got some strange looks.

kats Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

Sarah ~ I love the "Lilo and Stitch" soundtrack such fun. Love the movie too! It actually eclipsed "Little Mermaid" as my favorite Disney movie. I haven't actually listed to the Pirates soundtrack but I've heard a lot of people say they like it so I'll have to check it out. As we have so much in common musically I'm happy to take your recommendation ; )

kats Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

Shone ~ I also have Rihanna as well as Fergie, Beyonce (Destiny's Child too) and Gwen Stefani and some pretty recent club songs that I guess should be a bit embarassing for someone of 37. Actually I think the single thing I'm most embarassed about on my ipod is "Shake" by the Ying Yang twins. It's misogynistic and the language is beyond raw. But I just love the beat - it's the same one used in like "Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo" and in part of "Pump Up the Volume" by Colourbox which is also on my ipod. At least I don't play it with my kids in the car......

Sarah Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

Shone: I remember that Batman soundtrack! Man, that takes me back to the ol' college years. Prince all dressed up in purple like the Joker. He must've been all over that!

Sarah Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

Kats: Old school rap is good to mix things up a bit. Blondie's Rapture is as far as I ever got in that arena. I also can't stop listening to the soundtracks to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. LOVE the pirate music! I also love the soundtrack to Lilo & Stitch. That's about it for my Disney mania.

Allison Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 01:51 PM EST

"Convoy" by CW McCall

Shone Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST

While I currently have Rihanna, Mutya Buena, Siobhan Donaghy, Amerie, Natasha Bedingfield, Maroon 5, Jamelia, and Linkin Park's new discs on my mp3 player, I threw in Prince's "Batman" soundtrack and his mish mosh album "Come" which happen to be two of his most inconsistent projects, but I enjoy them so. Oh yeah, and does anyone remember Jennifer Paige? Her second album "Positively Somewhere" is completely underrated and blasting on my mp3 player as we speak. :)

kats Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 09:15 AM EST

Sarah~

Also all excellent songs ~ more I need to get! I'm going to have to budget my downloading! Let the support group begin! So much time spent watching MTV, listening to popular radio and working at the mall. Love the song "Crazy" by Icehouse but no, I don't think parachute pants will be coming back into style any time soon - at least I sure hope not :-) I also recall "AEIOU and Sometimes Y" although I haven't thought of it in ages. You know what I was thinking I should get the other day, and this is really sad, "Jam On It" and "White Pony". Nothing like really old school rap!

Sarah Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 08:28 AM EST

BTW, I also have Crazy by Icehouse. I love that video. And the pants the lead singer wears in it. Do you suppose parachute pants will be back in style anytime soon? ;)

Sarah Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 08:24 AM EST

Kats, how do we get our support group started? I'm in! I too love all the bands you mentioned (again!). I blame it on all the MTV I watched... you know, back in the stone ages when MTV used to show MUSIC VIDEOS. Here's an obscure one I wish I had on my iPod, but still have the British import single: Ebn Ozn, AEIOU and sometimes Y. Anybody still remember that one?? Also:
Scritti Politti: Perfect Way
The Smiths: How Soon Is Now
The Waitresses: I Know What Boys Like
Eddy Grant: Electric Avenue

kats Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 05:23 AM EST

Sarah~ Also a Yaz fan, my cousin introduced me to them when she went away to college (I also once did a cheerleading routine too ~ yes that's embarassing!) Love Def Leppard as well and Depeche Mode. I'm also a big INXS fan. Wish I had some of those soundtracks, particularly Breakfast Club. Still awaiting Grease 2 to come on itunes, but that's a different story ; ) Have way too much Simple Minds, Berlin, Billy Idol, Outfield and Tears for Fears. I'm thinking we should definitely start that support group!

wintersux ~ I can't believe someone else knows that song! I have a few that most people have never heard of like "Fly High Michelle" by Enuff Z'nuff (yes that was really the name of the band) and "Crazy" by Icehouse. Blame it on working at the mall during college...

wintersux Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 04:14 AM EST

OMG kats, just came back to read this and I have to say that I thought I was the only one besides Olivia Newton John herself to remember the song Totally Hot.

Sarah Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 08:00 PM EST

What's the prob, Dio_K?

Dio_K Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

Uhm, I realize I'm not one to point fingers, but Sarah & kats, you guys are scaring me...

Sarah Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Kats, I would love to have a Softalicious support group because I'm always trying to remember songs I haven't heard in decades, so you've helped me a lot there! I love all the groups you've mentioned too. Oh, and Yaz. LOVE Yaz (Don't Go). Depeche Mode (Just Can't Get Enough). Def Leppard. And Soundtracks. LOVE the soundtracks! Footloose, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Purple Rain, Risky Business, Pretty In Pink (Psychedelic Furs). Ah the list goes on and on! Another movie that has awesome 80s music is Grosse Pointe Blank. That's one of my favorites!

kats Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

Sarah~ Have some Howard Jones too. The rest is awesome - more I'll have to get! The other thing that (oddly enough) transports me back in time is Little River Band. I have most of their greatest hits on mine as well as REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Styx and Journey. I'm such a sucker for soft rock. I even have Paul Davis' "I Go Crazy". I watched something on VH1 Classic recently about the 40 most Softalicious Soft Rock Songs (or something like that) and yes, I had almost all of them! Safe to say my ipod is quite ecclectic! Maybe we can join some kind of support group or something ; )

Sarah Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

BTW, also LOVE Prince's Computer Blue with the Wendy/Lisa part. DMSR takes me back to my high school years like nothing else can! (Somebody please help me! Somebody help me!)

Sarah Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

kats Sun, Jun 24, 2007 at 07:06 AM EST

Sarah ~ "Kiss You All Over", "Brandy" and "I Know There's Something Going On" are also on mine! Too funny!

Dio_K Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 08:53 PM EST

I can't keep myself from playing.
1)What's New Pussycat? - Tom Jones
2)The Look of Love - Dionne Warwick
(Hmmm - do I see a pattern here?)
3)Wannabe- Spice Girls
4) I Melt With You - Modern English
5) You're Beautiful - James Blunt (shudder - but I still want to hear it once in a while -- I know!)

Sarah Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 07:58 PM EST

Katz: You & I have a lot in common! I have to admit, I'm not totally embarassed by my Adam Ant stuff either, and I too still have my AA & Duran Duran albums, posters, concert programs, and pins from high school (even some OLD teen mag issues!). More from my playlists:
Belinda Carlisle: Circle in the Sand
Destiny's Child: Bootylicious
Exile: Kiss You All Over
Looking Glass: Brandy
Frida: I Know There's Something Going on (for all you post-ABBA fans!)

Lesley Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Kats- I COMPLETELY forgot about Melanie! "Brand New Key" is sooo very bad that it's a classic!

kats Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 01:04 PM EST

Sarah ~ we must have some of the same taste because I have Adam Ant's "Strip" too, as well as "Desperate But Not Serious". I guess I'm not all that easily embarassed though because in addition to all three original Duran Duran albums, end to end, I still have all of the posters, lyric books and magazines I had in my room at 13. I must have moved 20 times since then and I carry them all around in an old trunk. My husband keeps telling me it's time to let go but I just can't!

Karen Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

Duran Duran's Rio & Seven and the Ragged Tiger CDs

The Les Mis soundtrack

Evita (only a few songs...)

Not ashamed of this, but I don't admit it in public either (usually)

Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 10:19 AM EST

haha, slezak's blogs usually seem to get the most comments. heh heh. not sure if it means that his blogs are super good, or super bad. haha.

Sarah Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 09:17 AM EST

Snee: I'm in the same boat, man! I'm making a list of songs I have to have as we speak! Katz: I also have Thunder Island-LOVE IT! Other Paige: that Moving Pictures song is an awesome choice! I can never get that one out of my head.
More from my playlist:
Janet Jackson: If
Altered Images: Happy Birthday
Adam & The Ants: Prince Charming, Strip
April Wine: Just Btwn You & Me, Sign of the Gypsy Queen
Erasure: A Little Respect, Chains of Love

kats Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 07:56 AM EST

So much stuff I need to find now!

Glad to see I'm not the only one with "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy", I just got that a couple of weeks ago. Also "Thunder Island" and "Naughty Naughty". Agree that "Safety Dance" is not embarassing. Always thought it funny that they used that song to get the people out of "Biodome". I own that movie and that's far more embarassing!

Maeve, I not only have "Walk the Dinosaur" I also remember the dance from the video! "Boom boom ackalacka boom. Boom boom ackalacka boom boom...."

Queen of Disrepair Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 07:13 AM EST

I'm not ashamed of anything I have on my 'lil monster player because I think that the randomness of never sorting makes me perk up and be happy no matter what's playing-I love going from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes to Molly Hatchett to Fall Out Boy. Now, having said that, I do have Petula Clark's "don't sleep in the subway" and "count me in" by Gary Lewis and the Playboys. And, yes, Rick Astley, Donnie Osmond and Weird Al are represented. I love this dialogue - if we didn't have the quirks and detours in our tastes we'd be...I don't know...Dick Cheney. Wonder what he's got on his MP3?

Phil Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 01:06 AM EST

beb, thank you for ALL the love, but if you made me a copy of the cd you made your mom, I'd be more than content! I actually tried to buy the GOOD version of the KLF/Tammy Wynette "Justified & Ancient" track off iTunes this week and was saddened to see they ONLY had the album version! If you wanna send me a copy of the cd, you can e-mail me at KlubJoker@aol.com! That tracklisting is HOT!! Love me some Cathy Dennis & Rick Astley! have u ever heard Rick Astley's "Dreaming" Todd Terry mix? Came out in like the late 90's/2000-ish! SUCH A GREAT MIX & SONG!

Other Paige Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 12:40 AM EST

Sarah-

I love "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" too.

I really liked a lot of the songs that were not big hits in the 80s but got some airplay.

Stuff like Peter Gabriel's Shock the Monkey (not ashamed of that at all!) and Moving Pictures' What About Me.

Little Lamb Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 12:21 AM EST

Marie-Claire,

"Safety Dance" is only one of the most AWESOME songs EVER. No need to feel ashamed of that one.

kats,
Yeah, I must admit, we downloaded "Soldier of Love" from Napster back when it was free and you could get stuff like that. We'd buy the legit version if we could find it!

Nix Sat, Jun 23, 2007 at 12:03 AM EST

Emily: Maybe you're hanging with the too-hip-to-live crowd that you would even consider Gene Kelly embarrassing. Well, maybe Xanadu. Buble and Phantom Planet -- if that's embarrassing to you, I am in awe at the quality of what you're proud of. Perhaps some unreleased grainy MP3 of Dylan, Jeff Tweedy and Conor Oberst on your patio? Or 2Pac's true secret opus?

Now "We Built This City" by Starship -- THAT's embarrassing. And it's on my iPod. I have other cheesy 80s ballads too but I like most of those and usually feel if people want to make fun i'll kick their ass.

snee Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:34 PM EST

how sad is it that i got only half-way through these comments and started thinking, "oh man! i HAVE to download that...and that...and that!"???????

? Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:12 PM EST

Sorry, but I don't see the point of this thread. People have diverse taste in music. I am not ashamed of any music I buy.

Sarah Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:48 PM EST

1. Sammy Hagar: Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy
2. Rockwell:(I Always Feel Like) Somebody's Watching Me
3. John Parr: Naughty Naughty
4. Anything by Whitesnake
5. Cher: Believe
You may commence throwing tomatoes now!

markG Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:23 PM EST

1. Jason Mraz- His first CD. I'm not sure why I can't bring myself to delete it.

2. The Divinys- I Touch Myself

3. James Blunt's CD

4. Culture Club- Time (Clock Of the Heart). Possibly the cheesiest song of all time (with the exception of maybe Mr. Blunt's songs).

5. Yoko Ono- Hedwig's lament/exquiset corpse. I liked Hedwig so it stays.

stephen Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 09:26 PM EST

All of my most shameful are Britney Spears. Does it really matter which songs?

Marie-Claire Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 07:58 PM EST

After putting aside several dozen tv themes that I keep on hand mostly to torment my cousin, and the Disney soundtracks that are for the kids (I swear it!), the five most 'shameful' tracks on my large and strange collection are:

1. "Sugar Sugar" The Archies take bubblegum into some sort of sugar rich HubbaBubba universe. And you can dance the Virginia Reel to it.

2. "You're Beautiful" James Blunt. Downloaded in a weak, sentimental moment.

3. "The Macarena" Is any comment necessary? Any justification possible?

4. "Safety Dance" I'm not even sure sure why I have this one, but I do.

5. A multi-part tie among various live clips from the second season of American Idol.

Guy Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 07:58 PM EST

Most of the songs I read from others on here so far aren't that bad since I have them on my ipod and I consider them nostalgic
my worse 5
On ipod are
Snow (Informer)
Lion King(Hakuna Matata) I'm 30
Jordy (Dur Dur Detre Baby). Its a french 3 year kid that sings it came out when I was like 15
Paul Anka (My Way) couldn't afford the Sinatra version
Poisons greatest hits I know its not just one song but all the hair bands and their fans that still wear their ripped tshirts they have been wearing since 6th grade should of been put to sleep with the mullet

emily Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

The most shameful songs i have on my ipod are the early Abba songs on there cd the definetive collection. I also have Tom Jones-What's new Pussycat.

mikey Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:51 PM EST

Charleyd2, I thought that the point of this board was to post things we were secretly ashamed of, not to call attention to the fact that you may have the most awesome playlist ever! I've never heard it before, but I can't stop laughing at the idea of:
"Stop! Collaborate and TIMMY!"

beb Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

Also, I just made a CD for my mom (!) and it has the following tracks:

1) Groove Is In The Heart - Dee Lite
2) Gonna Make You Sweat - C+C
3) Strike It Up - Black Box
4) Twilight Zone - 2 Unlimited
5) Fascinated - Company B
6) C'Mon And Get My Love - Cathy Dennis + D'Mob
7) Pump Up The Jam - Technotronic
8) The Power - Snap!
9) Justified And Ancient - KLF/Tammy Wynette
10) I Beg Your Pardon - Kon Kan
11) The Loco-Motion - Kylie Minogue
12) Together Forever - Rick Astley
13) Venus - Bananarama
14) Crush On You - The Jets
15) The Sign - Ace Of Base
16) Take A Chance On Me - Erasure
17) Vogue - Madonna
18) Freedom 90 - George Michael

beb Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:37 PM EST

Hi Michael,

I know I professed my love for Phil earlier this morning, but now I think I might love you more for posting a picture of Samantha Fox. Too bad we both have husbands...

Christian Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

I forgot to add that the song currently posted on my MySpace is "Lovergirl" by Teena Marie.

What can I say? I <3 white girls with soul!

Maeve Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

My officially fave has got to be Kats's "Walk the Dinosaur."

Christian Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:32 PM EST

I love anything that has to do with music. I can't pinpoint any specific songs, but two albums that I own bring me great guilty pleasure. They are:

"Fired Up!" &
"Freestyle Forever"

And yes, they are as delightfully tacky as seen on TV.

kats Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:12 PM EST

And totally forgot
"Hot Hot Hot" Buster Poindexter
"Da Butt"
"The Humpty Dance"....

kats Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:10 PM EST

Sorry for the third post and all but more I should probably hide:
"You Keep Me Hanging On" Kim Wilde
Songs by Seduction, Cover Girls, Sweet Sensation, Expose, et. al.
"Word Up" Cameo
"Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" by Ton Loc
"I Gotta Man" Positive K
"Wiggle It" Danceteria
"These Boots Are Made for Walking" Nancy Sinatra
"Brand New Key" Melanie
"Thunder Island" Jay Ferguson
"Whoomp There It Is" Tagg Team
"When You Close Your Eyes" Nightranger
"Dead Skunk In The Middle of the Road" Loudon Wainright
"Walking on Sunshine" Katrina & The Waves
"Walk The Dinosaur" Was Not Was
"Used to Love Her" Guns 'N Roses

Oh it goes on and on and on. If you haven't guessed, I am 37.....

Charleyd2 Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 06:03 PM EST

Wow, I feel like we're all compadres here! Love the songs I'm seeing - here's some of mine:

"Pac-Man Fever" - Buckner and Garcia (yes, they sell it on iTunes now)
"I Lost Me Cookie on the Dance Floor" - Cookie Monster (from some random kids' dance CD my friend had
"Rubber Ducky" - it's a German techno mix of Ernie singing about his bestest bath buddy. AWESOME.
"Ice Ice Timmy" - somebody took Vanilla Ice and spliced in a bunch of South Park "Timmy" sound bites. Too funny.
"Interjections" - School House Rocks soundtrack. Love this one!

And sadly, no, I have no children....

vdp Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

Amish Paradise-Weird Al
Invisible Man-98 Degrees
Magic-Olivia Newton John
The Rain, the Park and other things-The Cowsills
Dare Me-The Pointer Sisters
Who are you to judge me!

kats Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 05:51 PM EST

Little Lamb ~ Wish I had Soldier of Love! Not on iTunes though so will have to find alternative. Don't know why but it reminded me of another major couple of embarassments:

Naughty Naughty by John Parr

Obsession by Antimotion

kats Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 05:45 PM EST

Only 5? That's tough. Here's what sticks out as really embarassing but by no means is it a comprehensive list.

1. Making Love Out of Nothing At All - Airsupply (although Brad Pitt liked it in Mr. & Mrs. Smith so cooler now right?!?)

2. Totally Hot by Olivia Newton-John (no exusable reason I know of)

3. All Night Passion by Alisha (reminds me of college clubbing)

4. Amie by Pure Prarie League ('cause I've loved it since I was a kid)

5. Computer Blue by Prince & The Revolution (Wendy? Yes Lisa. Is the water warm enough? Yes Lisa. Shall we begin?)

6. Because I feel as though I should be fully forthcoming. Just A Giggolo by David Lee Roth.

Not even the tip of the iceberg. I really do like a lot of bad music....

Little Lamb Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 05:06 PM EST

Wow, there are some really embarrassing selections already listed below (many of which I also love), so I might as well fess up on my most embarrassing 5:
<>
Current of Love (Baywatch closing theme) - David Hasselhoff
Soldier of Love - Donny Osmond
Girl You Know It's True - Milli Vanilli (my 3-year-old daughter also loves this one)
We Built This City - Starship
Say You'll Be There - Spice Girls
<>
I'm not even sure these are my most embarrassing choices, but I figure they're close enough. Although I really do like "Soldier of Love" and think it's a great song. So what if it's Donny Osmond? He showed a great sense of humor in the video for "White & Nerdy."

Vivi Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 05:02 PM EST

Oh, this is too easy:

Theme Songs galore --
Gummi Bears
The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Perfect Strangers
Growing Pains
The Jeffersons (<--Not so bad, now that I think bout it)
...and I'm thinking of adding "Animaniacs" and "Tiny Toons"

Scotty Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 04:39 PM EST

There are so many songs posted here that I like (and have on my ipod) that it would be hard to come up with just five (I too bought that C-Note single!). But, if I had to, here are five I'd probably guiltily turn down if I was pulling up to an intersection in my car (only because most people can't appreciate their sugary goodness):
Cartoon Heroes - Aqua
Tragedy - Steps
Mi Chico Latino - Geri Halliwell
Your Disco Needs You - Kylie Minogue
Let's Go To Bed - No Angels ft Mousee T

ugly allie Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 04:32 PM EST

yikes....my iTunes is chock full of some shameful stuff, probably since i grew up in the 90s (and i have an overall weakness for cheesy pop music.) here are a few selections:
-"calculus" by that fake MTV boy band 2ge+her
-the entire "high school musical" soundtrack
-way too many celine dion songs than is normal for a 20 year old
-jamie lynn spears singing the theme song to her show "zoey 101"
-"love and affection" by nelson (blame "i love the 80s" for this one)
-2 paris hilton songs (just blame a lack of judgment on these)
-"ice, ice baby" by vanilla ice
-"i wanna sex you up" by color me badd (downloaded as a joke, and kept on my iTunes for over a year now)

sananto Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 04:27 PM EST

you know we'll be adding songs in our Ipods tonight. This is more of a reminder of songs I keep forgetting to add. i recently "cleaned" my cheesy songs & put upbeat remixes for my workouts but tonight I'm adding some of the above mentioned

LP Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 04:27 PM EST

Wow - 5 is difficult as I am the queen of cheese.....
1. We Connect - Stacey Q
The lesser known song by the two hit wonder. Try not to sing along - it's impossible
2. All 4 Love - Color Me Badd
The name of the song alone (what with the number four instead of for) and the group (the extra d makes them extra bad) qualifies as embarrassing but again - LOVE IT
3. Cool It Now - New Edition Favorite line - "Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike, if I love a girl who cares who you like" Puts a mile on my face everytime
4. The Goonies R Good Enough - Cindi Lauper - It's from the Goonies, what more can I say?
5. Too Many Walls - Cathy Dennis - Seemed sooooo romantic to me in the day - super cheese now

Jen H Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 04:17 PM EST

I have the debut cd from Tracy Lords, 1000 Fires and I think its awesome. Great dance tracks.

Maeve Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

Kristin, as the owner of Jem and the Holograms on DVD, I salute you.

1. Mandy- Barry Manilow
2. All the Things She Said- t.a.t.u
3. Tomorrow - Annie soundtrack
4. Harden My Heart- Quarterflash
5. Part of Your World- Little Mermaid

Jane Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

1) The full 24 minute recording of "It's a Small World" (also suitable for use as a coercive interrogation technique).
2) The German Sailor Moon Theme Song - no, seriously, check it out German, techno, and "Sailor Moon."
3) "I Can't Help Myself" by Nobody's Angel
4) "Who Said" by Hannah Montana
5) "What is Love" by Hadley

Generally, any song where the typical review is something like "omg i luv XXXX, they r the best!!!" is one that I consider "shameful." And sad to say, I have a lot of them.

Joslyn Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

I have no shame whatsoever for loving lots of the stuff previously mentioned like the Spice Girls, Robbie Williams, REO Speedwagon, Air Supply or anything showtune-related. I have incredibly cheesy taste in music and no problem admitting it. That being said, even these are pushing the limits:
How Do I Deal - Jennifer Love Hewitt. On an MTV Party To Go CD, and I do love this song
Harper Valley PTA
Ballad of the Green Berets - back when my husband and I shared a music library, these were some of his more questionable contributions
Family Ties theme song. The long version.
I also have every Max Crumm performance from Grease: You're the One That I Want, cause I'm still a Slacker Backer and proud of it.

ZF Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:52 PM EST

I am not ashamed of any of these, but those close to me might be embarrassed if word got out:
I Beg Your Pardon - Kon Kan
Goody Two Shoes - Adam Ant
Poison - Bell Biv Devoe
Hold On Tight - ELO
Dream Weaver - Gary Wright
Lovin' You - Minnie Riperton
Reminiscing - Little River Band
Thunder Island - Jay Ferguson
Boogie Oogie Oogie - A Taste of Honey
Only You - Yaz
To Sir with Love - Lulu
Wild Wild West - Escape Club

Brandon Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

1. "Nobody's Perfect," Hannah Montana. A cheeserific exercise in self-esteem pop with actual spoken parts ("Don't give up! Try again!") that should make anyone over the age of 12 blush. And yet I crank it every time...

2. "The Bad Touch," The Bloodhound Gang. Deliciously filthy and absurdly corny. No musical merit whatsoever but always gets me to laugh.

3. "I Touch Myself," The Divinyls. 'Nuff said.

4. "Techno Syndrome (7" Mix)," The Immortals. "Test your might" chicka-chicka-chicka "MORTAL KOMBAT!"

5. "A Whole New World," Katie Price Featuring Peter Andre. I can hardly ever resist remakes of big '90s hits, but in this case, I probably should have.

Other Paige Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:23 PM EST

Andy Taylor-Take It Easy (it's from American Anthem which just multiplies the effect)
Goo Goo Dolls-Dizzy (I really really don't like them, so it's just personally embarrassing)
Lou Gramm-Midnight Blue
Kenny Rogers/Sheena Easton-We've Got Tonight
Rex Smith-You Take My Breath Away

Mostly sappy ballads, 80s songs ... and sappy 80s songs.

Then there are five I'm not ashamed of that I probably should be:

Andy Gibb-I Just Want to Be Your Everything
Olivia Newton-John-Make a Move on Me
Sheena Easton (she returns!)-Modern Girl
America-You Can Do Magic
Daryl Hall-Dreamtime

djm Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

"Far Behind" - Candlebox
"Fascinated" - Company B
"Bootylicious" and "Cater To You" (the disco mix) - Destiny's Child (how embarrasing - I can't believe I have a song - a fairly recent one at that - that celebrates being a servant to a man - even "putting your doo-rag on" - GROSS!
"Hey! Freethinker" = VoiceFarm - scared of that.

Honestly there are just too many to list.

TSD Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

Not really ashamed, but here are some songs/albums that I love, in secret.

The whole Aqua album w/ Barbie Girl on it.
...Baby One More Time
Backstreet Boys
Goodbye by Spice Girls
A whole album of songs by Doris Day
Pure Soul's album

Janice Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

"Apache" by Sugar Hill Gang
"Careless Whisper" by Wham!
"Happiness Hotel" by The Muppets
"I Lost on Jeopardy" by Weird Al
"Montage" from the Team America World Police Soundtrack

idigress Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer
Get Right - Jennifer Lopez
All My Life - K-Ci and JoJo
Bubble, Pop Electric - Gwen Stefani
Can We Talk - Tevin Campbell
Ms. New Booty - Bubba Sparxx

Martha Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:03 PM EST

I just wrote "when it ["Gett Off"] comes on my iPod"...haha hee hee hoo hoo. Heh. Yes, I know I'm Beavis. Lordy.

Martha Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 03:01 PM EST

JJ, don't be ashamed of "Gett Off"! As a 36-year-old mom, I still feel thrillingly naughty when it comes on my iPod. Oh, and it's great for crunches too - you know, when your kids aren't around to ask you embarrassing questions and all.

Martha Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

1. "High on You" - Survivor (somehow liking Journey is OK, but I'm a bit embarrassed about this one. Bought it too.)
2. "Shot through the Heart" - Bon Jovi (even worse than the song I was *trying* to buy, "You Give Love a Bad Name)
3. "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" - Leonard Nimoy? (in my pitiful defense, my sister sent this to me on a mix CD as a joke. Craptastic.)
4. "One Bad Apple" - The Osmonds trying to be the white Jackson 5.(in my even more pitiful defense, my husband bought this for me as a joke since it was the #1 Top 40 song the week I was born. Bastard.)
5. Violin Sonata no. 3 in C minor - Edvard Grieg (shamelessly derivative and overly folk-influenced)

Just kidding about that last one.

Ep Sato Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:56 PM EST

Chad, there's no shame in "take you home". Any song that famous dance musicians steal and remake into their own gig is a classic. The fact that the Black Eyed Peas Lisa Lisa's track means that this song qualifies.

And J pop fans, where the love for MISIA? I've always thought of her as a Japanese Mariah Carey, without the freaky persona or bad movies...

No Brand Woman Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:34 PM EST

Yeah, I loves my J-pop. I let Japanese artists get away with bad music much easier than I do English artists.
1. Moonlight Densetsu - the Japanese theme for the anime "Sailor Moon" (and I can even sing the Japanese words!)
2. Bomb A Head! - from the anime Tenjou Tenge. Mostly embarrassing b/c of the goofy name, but I love this song!
3. Modern Girl - Sonia
4. Be Happy koi no yajirobee - Tanpopo. Oh, if only you could hear it!
5. E-mail more - Tommy february6. I love her Engrish-filled lyrics: "The Shining "Cotton candy love" comes
...suddenly, It's Sugary Sensation!
Like a Bubble gum popped! oh yeah...
DOKIDOKI What a passion...!!"

As for the most embarrassing album, I actually own the Pokemon CD "2.B.A.Master". I bought it when I was in high school... yeah... and I used to know the entire Pokerap before they added so many of the things in the newer games and series.

Bennie Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

5. One night in Bangcock by Murray Head
4. Nothing's gonna stop us now by Starship
3. Groove is in the heart by Deee-lite(one of the best dance songs ever)
2. I touch myself by the Divynils(so catchy)
and finally my number one pick for the worst song that i love have to be The Ketchup song by Las Ketchup(one of the worst songs ever but I just can't help loving it).

JJ Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

I know I should refuse to be ashamed of my taste in music..however, there are a few songs that I don't prefer to be associated with, but secretly lurv..
Where Does My Heart Beat Now-Celine Dion. I am so not a luv song kinda gal, but I can't help but relive jr high memories with this love song dedication classic
Get Off-Prince. I know Prince is all kinds of awesome, but I feel a little ashamed as a 30 year old mom listening to a song that says "23 positions in a one night stand"
I also have the C-Note song, which I still love. And to whoever posted Mercedes Boy by Pebbles...I say Mer-mer-mer Mercedes!!!!

Lena Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

I'm ALMOST ashamed to admit this, but The Beach Boys with "Kokomo."

And the other day when I was in the car, the Peter Cetera/Cher song "After All" came on and I belted it out like the "American Idol" wannabe I am. Strange looks be damned, even if they did come from the guy sitting in my passenger's seat.

Chad Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

My list of shame in no particular order:

Tyra Banks-Shake ya body (sorry I secretly love it)
Lindsay Lohan - Rumors (mtv made me do it!)
Vengaboys-We like to party
Stacey Q- Two of hears (80s goodness!)
Lisa Lisa - Take you home (such a classic!)

mikey Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

1. "Hip to be Square" by Huey Lewis --I guess this song hasn't really stood the test of time...
2. "Baby Baby" by Amy Grant -- using the same rationale of other commenters, it just makes me feel good.
Now for some '70s cheese.
3. "Saturday Night" by the Bay City Rollers -- Keep on dancin' to the rock and roll...
4. "Convoy" by C.W. McCall -- Best. Driving. Song. Ever.
5. Then there's the entire Brady Bunch Album, it's all horrible ("Time For a Change") but the worst has to be the Brady kids' rendition of "American Pie" -- think of how bad Madonna's version was (you know I'm right) then multiply by 1000.

Snooks Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:58 PM EST

Okay, I don't know how but I completely forgot this one:
That What Love Can Do - Boy Krazy
because, apparently, you're truly crazy about boys when it's spelled with a "K"...

Even worse, this song was on the Sirius at my work the other day and I was bopping around singing it.

Oh, and my favorite soft rock song,

Key Largo - Bertie Hayes...it's at the beginning of my morning walk mix so I listen to it on a daily basis!

GOB Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

I love the mom jeans Samantha Fox is rocking in that photo.

Elaine Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

Mr. Boombastic - Shaggy - Yes the original version!
Tone Loc - Wild Thing
Q-Tip - Vivrant Thing
Ginuine - Pony
The original Spice Girls album - I am so glad someone else will admit to this. I thought I was the only one. I also have the first 2 'N Sync Albums. I have some really bad music.

There is Nothing wrong with Sir Mix-A-Lot. "Baby Got Back" is a great gym song. So is "Jump On It", which I also have.

Robert Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:49 PM EST

Sadly, I have Paula Abdul's entire "Forever Your Girl" album on my iPod, and I refuse to listen to it in any location where someone can hear it. I also refuse to delete it, because dammit, sometimes I just need the wisdom of MC Skat Kat.

daisyj Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:49 PM EST

Oh, and for those of you who listed "Informer" as one of your picks, you must go and watch this, like, now:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyLFP03ScpA

Kari Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

1. Faded by soulDecision (note the punctuation, very important). I love this song. No shame, just bad taste.
2. The Floor by Johnny Gill. Again, craptastic in all ways.
3. The whole Depeche Mode Violator album, which I declared to be the very best album that ever was or will be made. I don't quite feel that strongly about it anymore.
4. Up! by Shania Twain. Punctuation is again very important.
5. Big Spender by Shirley Bassey. I can't explain it.

daisyj Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:46 PM EST

I know this list should be long enough to use up all my allowed characters, but since I left my ipod at home today this will have to do until I can get to it and let the true shame spiral begin:

"Soldier of Love", by Donnie Osmond
(Actual lyrics: Like a thief in the night, who can't get enough,
I am willing to fight,
'cause I'm a soldier of love.
Like a shot in the dark when the going gets rough,
I'ts a state of the heart
when you're a soldier of love. It's like someone fired up the random cliche generator and rhymed everything that came out.)

"Dragostea Din Tei", by O-Zone
(Not the first Making the Band band. At least I don't think so. I have no idea if the lyrics are stupid or not, because I can't understand them.)

Ep Sato Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

Slezak, I'm disapointed. Not by the fact that you've got Samantha Fox listed (she worked with madison's own "Full Force", and I thought they were the shizzle dizzle), but by virtue of the fact that you talked about Skinemax late night soft core porno without noting Samantha Fox's connection!

Sam Fox was a nude model and soft core porn star for YEARS before she became a rapper/singer. Unlike Traci Lords' or Paris Hilton's crappy albums, this former porn star showed some talent!

Don't forget her "I want to have some fun" and "Lovehouse" tracks off the second album. I listen to them without shame to this very day.

Now, I am ashamed of my Cover Girls "Show me" (played loudly over a scooter stereo, it's embarrassing), "Wisdom" by Brian Jonestown (it's a bit too moody for the style I try to convey), and the fact that I put 20 salsa songs on a 40 song playlist.

Angie Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:29 PM EST

I secretly like O-Town too, so I'm not judging! I also have Mercedes Boy by Pebbles, Baby It's You by JoJo featuring Lil Bow Wow, Heartbreaker by Zapp & Roger, Just a Friend by Biz Markie. Sigh. I feel very un-cool right now.

Kristi Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

I have an entire Playlist on my iPod for such gems and I call that Playlist Velveeta for its creamy, cheesy goodness. It includes Celine's Greatest Hits, 2 Spice Girls albums, the Marc Anthony/Tina Arena duet from the Zorro movie, and S Club 7's "Never Had a Dream Come True."

Troubledmind Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

How about some "Love is Contagious" from one of the Prince finds: Taja Seville? Then toss in a slice of "Sorry Your Not My Kind of Girl" from the brown boy band New Edition and wash it all down with 2 pieces of dessert from the often criticized 20.Y.O by She Whose Fun Bags Won't Go Away, nasty Janet: Daybreak & Enjoy. Add it up: simma + down + na = simma down na!

jason Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

"is that your face, or did your neck throw up something?", classic. ha

Everyone, stop wastingyour time being ashamed of the music you like!!! Just listen to it and damn the man!!

Jasper Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

I'm not ashamed of any of my music. I do feel a little obsessive about getting Julianne Hough's 'Will You Dance With Me' because I was so into DWTS but she has a good voice and it's not bad and it sits comfortably between a song from the Putnam County Spelling Bee sdtk (by Jose Llana! Love him!) and 'Get Money' by Junior Mafia (Play Nintendo on my livin room flo'). Just like my White Stripes and Whitney and DMX and the Dixie Chicks sit happily side by side. You guys did mention some stuff that I'm missing like 'Romantic Call' (Thanks Phil!), and I have the first two Spice Girls albums on cd but they haven't been uploaded to iTunes yet.

wintersux Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

Wait! I found one that if it's been mentioned I missed it...One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head.

wintersux Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

How sad that every shameful song that I could think of has already been mentioned. Cheese fest.

Christa Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

I'm pretty scared that most of the songs named here are on my husband's iPod (He has the 30 gig & I only have a little nano, so I clog his iPod with my guilty pleasures.) However, I do have my fair share of crap on mine, as well...Here goes.
1. East Bound & Down, Jerry Reed
2. Hollywood Swinging, Kool & the Gang - purchased TODAY, thank you.
3. Ain't Gonna Bump No More (with no big fat woman) - Joe Tex
4. Lucky - Britney Spears (I have about 20 Britney songs....this is the best/worst)
5. Strokin' - Clarence Carter

Nicole Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

1. Any Dream Will Do - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
2. Puff the Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul and Mary
3. One - Brian Mcknight
4. Can't fight the moonlight - Leann Rimes from the Coyote Ugly soundtrack
5. Blow Job Betty - Too Short

Randomness.

jason Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

there'll be another list, but for now

1) who's johnny - el debarge
2) the promise - when in rome
3) fading like a flower - roxette
4) it's gonna be a lovely day - s.o.u.l. system
5) wannagirl - jeremy jordan (and video!! woof)
6) back to my roots - rupaul - better than "supermodel", a gay cult classic (to me anyway)
more to come

Emily Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

Save the Last Dace - Michel Buble (not becuase of the song, but it's association with the horrendously bad movie "The Wedding Date")

'Swonderful- Gene Kelly (I have a taste for the oldies)

California - Theme Song from the OC (I Don't know why, but it makes me feel hip)

Random Acapella Songs - What? You mean Acapella isn't cool after college?

Independence Day - By Mel C (In my defense it's on the soundtrack for Bend it Like Beckham, and therefore acceptable b/c of the sheer brilliance of the movie)

jason Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

i am not ashamed of any of the songs i loved back in the day. i still love em all. i still have sam fox's greatest hits play every once in a while. c-note was cool too, and i LURV "pull up to the bumper" lots. the 90's was my favorite music decade (i hear shots being fired at me right now), but it was unassuming and fun. i miss the good ole days. i'll comprise a "list" soon, but i still love "here we go" by c+c music factory and "freak like me", by adina howard. also anything by jade, they were the poor man's destiny's child and i loved 'em.

ChrisClassof1988 Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

1) Frank Stallone- Far from Over from the soundtrack of the movie Staying Alive (Dated 80's music)

2)Vixen- Edge of a Broken Heart (Dated 80's Hair band Music)

3)Olivia Newton John - Twist of Fate
(Dated 80's soundtack song to an awful movie "Two of a Kind" ......do we see a strange pattern here

4) Charlene "I've been to Paradise but i've never been to me"....do i have to explain at all???
and finally

5)Stacy Q- Two of Hearts ....I I I I I I need this song in my Ipod

Enjoy the weekend

Heather Wixson Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:42 PM EST

I feel the shame spiral ready to commence:
1. Ninja Rap- Vanilla Ice (honest to goodness)
2. Color Me Badd- the whole CMB album (and I listened to it recently beginning to end; not good but it was inspired by me recently watching the episode of 90210 they were on)
3. Michael Bolton- Said I Loved You But I Lied (this was just to irritate my hubby but I secretly like the song).
4. Sir Mix-a-Lot- Baby Got Back (this is actually one of my favorite songs ever but I get harassed over it a lot).
5. Tie between Boom Boom Boom (Let's go back to your room) and Dangerous on the Dance Floor. Sometimes you just gotta dance!

Hard to tell but I am actually a rock and legitimate hip-hop fan. Shaming shall commence now!

Jenny Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

1. "MMMBop," Hanson. NEED I SAY MORE? I also have their "Speechless" on my ipod (shut up, it's a good song.)
2. "Tumthumping," Chumbawumba
3. "Wannabe," Spice Girls
4. "We Built This City," Jefferson Starship. It makes sense that I have what VH1 dubbed the most "Awesomely Bad" song ever.
5. "Hold On," Wilson Phillips. It is cheesy and makes me feel good, and I love it.

Eric Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Mambo #5 by Lou Bega
Are you Johnny Ray?
Informer by Snow
Crush by Jennifer Paige
A few songs by S Club 7

Lesley Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

I have to step in and assure you, wickdkimber, that you have nothing to be ashamed of for having "Toxic" on your ipod. I unironically love that song.

Michele Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:34 PM EST

The Beetlejuice Theme by Danny Elfman and Got My Mind Set on You by George Harrison (somebody try to deny that the video wasn't cool for it's time).
And I am not ashamed to say that I have the The Simpsons songs that they sing on the show on CD. Love that show!!!

Wickdkimber Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:30 PM EST

Shame, shame, shame on all of us. LOL
Here's my list.
**Toxic - Britney Spears
**Barbie Girl - Aqua
**Angie Baby - Helen Reddy
**The Humpty Dance - Digital Underground
**Party All The Time - Eddie Murphy (this one is a real throwback)
I have several more embarassing ones (some already mentioned by other's before) that I wouldn't dare be screaming out loud walking down the street. LOL.

mykietown Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

1. "I Swear" by All-4-One
2. "Crush on You" and "You Got It All" by The Jets
3. "Strong Enough" by Cheryl Crow (embarrassing because I'm a guy)
4. "I Adore Mi Amore" by Color Me Badd (don't forget that second "d" in "Badd")

Jason Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

I have "Naughty Girls..." on my iPod, too. I am not ashamed, though. If I love a song, there is no reason to feel bad about it. Play it loud and proud!

Snooks (head held in shame...) Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

1. Invisible - Clay Aiken terrible!!!
2. Unskinny Bop - Poison
3. How Bizarre - the Kids Bop version (it has never been played on my iPod or iTunes...phew!)
4. Theme song to Tiny Toon Adventures
5. Hot Hot Hot! - Buster Poindexter

Phil Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

I don't think these hardly qualify as BAD songs, just completely RANDOM!! Also Slezak, if you spent the .99 cents on "PULL UP TO MY BUMPER", I hope you either bought or also have Patra's two BIGGEST hits, "Worker Man" & "Romantic Call" with Yo Yo!
Gigi D'Agostino "I'LL FLY WITH YOU"
Hilary Duff "STRANGER"
The Gaylettes "SON OF A PREACHER MAN"
Jessica Simpson "THESE BOOTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING"
The Spice Girls "Stop"

***FYI Slezak did you HEAR Victoria Beckham's new single "FULL STOP" featuring Nas on AOL's new songs?? ITS ACTUALLY A GREAT SUMMER SONG & only 2:48!!!****

Kristin Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

The theme to Jem and the Holograms.

Achy Breaky Heart. Need I say more?

When the Lights Go Out by 5ive

On The Wings of Love...by Clay Aiken. Yeah, I said it.

Debbie Gibson & Tiffany's greatest hits

Candy by Mandy Moore.

Now everyone knows my secret shame.

Oops Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:12 PM EST

I have the "Pokerap" on my iPod. Just imagine what the 4 other worst songs could be.

donner Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 12:07 PM EST

10cc - "I'm not in love"
Dan Fogelberg - "Longer"
Looking Glass - "Brandy"
Rick Astley - "Never gonna give you up"
Sir Mix a Lot - "Baby Got Back"

Overall, I'm proud to say I don't know any of the artists that Slezak mentions on his iPod...I think my embarrassing ones are pretty righteous, really...

Don't give up on us baby (I know!!!) -David Soul;
I'll see you in my dreams - Doris Day;
I still believe - Hayden Panetierre;
Memory - Laguna Beach Soundtrack
Space Cowboy - N'sync feat. Left Eye

* I also have Scatman, but that didn't embarrass me.

GREAT FEATURE!!!

J.E.M. Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

My iPod is FULL of so bad they're good songs.

Ashlee Simpson - La La (why do I like it? I dont know)

Britney Spears - From the bottom of my broken heart

Spice Girls - Spice, Spiceworld, and unfortunately, Forever

Alannah Myles - Black Velvet

All Saints - I Know Where It's At (So I like Europop, no biggie . . . I just need to learn to pick GOOD Europop.)

Lesley Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:45 AM EST

I just realized after this that I have A LOT of stuff on my ipod that I didn't even know about. Here's my most embarrassing:
1. "Heat of the Moment" Asia- In my defense, Cartman sang it, which makes it cool.
2. "I want it that way" Backstreet Boys- I have no defense for this.
3. "Lovefool" Cardigans- It makes me happy
4. "Father figure" George Michael- I have no idea how this got on there or why. Let this be a lesson, don't drink and download.
5. "Sister Christian" Night Ranger- no one can deny what a cool karaoke song this is.

mike Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

1. Bye Bye Bye-N'Synch-Nobody was happier than me about the boy bands going away, but this one song was just too darn catchy.
2. Waterloo-Abba-My first album was Abba's greatest hits.
3.Elephant Love Medley-Ewan McGregor,Nicole Kidman-The movie is loud and stupid. But there is something about these two stars doing kareoke.
4. Downtown-Petula Clark-stupid credit card commercial
5. Millenium-Robbie Williams-I am probably the only person in the U.S. who bought this vaugely sounding James Bond theme knock-off.

jill Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

1. Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits
2. Lita Ford's "Kiss Me Deadly"
3. Duran Duran's Greatest Hits
4. Leo Sayer's "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing"
5. Winger's "Seventeen"

Kate Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

Well you see, I can't limit it to 5 because I own a copy of The Monkees Anthology. So have your pick there. I also have songs from ABC and The Jackson 5's ABC on there, Duran Duran's greatest hits, ABBA...lots of songs that kind of tarnish the rock-intelligent persona I have created for myself amongst my friends. :)

hoo Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

OMG bwahahahaha Sleazak this column rules...can we have this be an extended feature each week? Pls!
33 yr old woman with the indie brit pop/punk tastes but I still own the following:

Spandau Ballet -True
Boyz 2 men/Maria- One Sweet Day
Creed- Arms Wide Open
George Micheal/Elton John- Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
Hilary Duff- Come Clean.
And many Spice Girls songs...

Its my ipod and my rules!!!

h Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

that c-note video is the best thing i have seen all week! i think you should submit it for monday's "today's funnies."

GeeMoney Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

"Nothing My Love Can't Fix" Joey Lawrence
"Lollipop" Aqua
"She Blinded Me With Science" Thomas Dolby
"Informer" Snow
"Never Gonna Give You Up" Rick Astley

Personally, I think all of these songs are cheesy and shameful, but I love them anyway!

Trish Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 11:03 AM EST

I think for me the hard part will be coming up with ONLY 5, so let's see;

1. The Sondtrack to the movie Josie and the Pussycats (with Rachel Leigh Cook, Roasarao Dawson and Tara Reid Lip-Synching Horribly). The music actually isn't half-bad when you're going for cheesy and upbeat.

2. A large collection of bagpipe music, though I must admit the group (Tartan Terrors) and particularly the Piper (Sean McKeow - gorgeous!) are wonderfully talented and funny.

3. The Soundtrack to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

4. I'm Henry the VIII, I Am, by Herman's Hermits

5. Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz by Big Bird.

For the record, that list got me only halfway thruogh my collection, but my iPod battery is about to die! It gets worse!

Paul U. Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:56 AM EST

my iPod contains most of the 2 Live Crew album "Nasty As They Want To Be"...and yes, I own the actual CD also. So sue me, it's an in-joke from growing up.

Michael J. Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

Being a musician, I have a lot of music. But, the only stuff that I'd be embarrassed for people to know that I had: Ashley Simpson "Pieces of You," Bananarama "Venus," ("Cruel Summer" is somehow acceptable, but "Venus" is not), DeBarge "Rhythm of the Night" (in my defense, this is from a Motown Greatest Hits CD...but I didn't have to keep it, now did I?), a two-disc greatest hits of Donna Summer (individual songs not being bad, of course, but 36 songs? SHAME!), and Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee). Can you tell that I'm gay? Ha ha...

Stephanie Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

The Dickies version of the Bananna Splits song, Futureama theme, and Don Qixote by Magazine 60.

aramis Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

Here's my batch of oh-so-shamefuls:
-"B in the Remix" - Britney Spears
-"Spiceworld" - Spice Girls - it's a streetcred thing, yo
-O-Town - which I NEVER listen to...come to think of it, how DID it get in my collection? Odd...
-"Invincible" by Pat Benatar - the woman rocked in the 80s, but not with this song, which I still love ("FAIR IS FAIR!").
-"Toy Soldiers" by Martika - both (oh) the English (my) AND Spanish versions (god)
-AND THE ONE TO TOP ALL OF YOU: "BABY WOMAN" album by Naomi Campbell...AHAHAAHHAHAHA! You have to be really drunk for this garb to sound good, which it does, when you're REALLY REALLY Drunk!

Sandy Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

Sadly, it didn't take long to find these five on my iPod:

1) "Live for Loving You" - Gloria Estefan. Granted, I can only really listen to this one if my day's been insanely good, but it's a sweet little song.

2) "White Lines" - Duran Duran. Yeah, yeah, I've read all the 'Worst Cover of a Song' ever articles. I like the faster pacing of this version and it makes me laugh....

3) "Jump Shout Boogie" - Barry Manillow. I think anything by Barry is a default inclusion on this list, though I do like this song's piano.

4) "Rock the Night" - Europe. They did actually release another song aside from "The Final Countdown". If it weren't for my metal-loving older bro, I wouldn't have ever heard it either.

5) "Good for You" - Amy Grant. Yeah, well, it makes me think warm fuzzies about my guy. Sue me. : )

snarky Fri, Jun 22, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

oooh...ss.ss..samantha fox! I have that one too!

I am proud to own:
Poison's Greatest Hits
the Spongebob Squarepants album
Lou Bega's album (the mambo #5 guy)
an odd assortment of TV THemes (Charles in Charge anyone?) and Schoolhouse Rock (Interplanet Janet and The Adverb song are the best.)

Finally, although i am in my 30s, I am currently listening to Avril's BOYFRIEND and Amy's REHAB.
