Nintendo with Nicole Kidman (huh?!)

Kidman_l_2 G'day PopWatchers. Like many of you I go way back with Nintendo. I reigned over Super Mario games as a sassy Princess Peach, tilted a faux firearm at cartoon ducks, and rejoiced after beating the entire Zelda game one afternoon after school. (All right, so it was over a period of time, but still pretty impressive for a 10-year-old.) So for me, the word Nintendo conjures fond memories of floating skirts, (wo)man vs. self, and Koji Kondo-composed soundtracks.

But alas, Nintendo is more than a childhood memory. It is a brand — both retro (see: merchandise at Hot Topic) and modern (see: Wii remote-yielding gamers). Adding to its modern appeal is Nintendo's new famous (like A-list famous!) face: Nicole Kidman.

Am I the only one who finds this strange? And I get that it's totally the point to think it's strange, but at the same time, I still can't wrap my head around it. I don't have to check my famous people I'd want to play Nintendo with list (what, don't you have one?) to know that Nicole Kidman ain't on it.

I should mention that the game company's marketing campaign isn't about playing Nintendo with other people. Kidman is the face of the DS game More Brain Training, which follows last year's Brain Age and tests users on mental aptitude. The campaign aims to bring the company's name to the masses (or at least the segment of the masses that doesn't include teenage boys). Still, while it's not exactly Zelda, it's weird to see the Moulin Rouge star squinting into the screen of a Nintendo DS.

Here, the Aussie actress appears to have sought solace from Puffy's Labor Day "White Party" to do some brain exercises. And while I think she's very pretty and love the way she pronounces the word rock, she doesn't make me want to go out and get my mind game on. Besides — Rock, Paper, Scissors? Is this how the Oscar-winner challenges herself? Tell me, PopWatchers, am I stuck in my old Duck Hunt-gun-toting ways? Is Nicole's ad fresh and intriguing? Should I pass the controller?

Is it called BRAIN AGE or FACE FREEZE?

The photo is actually truly lovely. However, it would have killed to see an A-List star who is beautiful but actually projects intelligence -- or wrinkles their forehead when thinking! Nicole is a great actress but no Einstein. How about Oscar Winners Jodi Foster? Julianne Moore? Susan Sarandon? Halle Berry? or best of all Cate Blanchett?

Nicole Kidman Urban has made one apperance too many. I for one am tired of her face. Sure, games can be played by anyone, but does this mean her career has taken a dive? I say no. Don't really care to see anymore of her, nor do I want to hear about what her cause of the day is. Blah Blah.

So.... She will do something strange for a piece of change..

Bravo Nicole.

I actually have played the brain age games... and if you havent played it... then it really is pointless to criticize it. It features soduko puzzles, math problems, voice recognition-- the point is to do them at a timely manner. Nicole kidman is getting up there in age... to me it makes sense for her to be the spokesmodel.. A product like Brain age would do the WORLD a lot more good than the voilent shooting crap that people are buying these days.. and if she's the face to make dumb americans a tad bit sharper and smarter.. then so be it.

MMMM, yummy Nicole.....

No Brand Woman, you made me laugh with the Animal Crossing reference. Nicole could also visit your town and post something on your town message board like "Go see my movie 'The Invasion,' coming this August!" Now that's some grassroots marketing.

I must say it is hard to imagine Nicole Kidman playing a DS, but I think it's great! Her being in the new ad compaign will just show that the DS isn't just for kids. It's already proven this by being the highest selling gaming console during the last holiday season. Nintendo knows what they're doing when it comes to handheld. Sony and Microsoft could really learn from them.
I can only hope that these commercials will bring Nicole Kidman to love the DS, too. Who knows? Maybe then she'll pick up Animal Crossing and she can totally visit my town! We can run around shaking trees and planting flowers together.

I DO love the idea that they got such a megafamous celebrity to do a commercial for a videogame (showing that EVERYBODY plays, not just geeky dudes in a basement somewhere...like me) and she looks absolutely lovely in this commercial.

That being said, I've never played this game BUT...am i the only one who thinks she comes off a slightly mentally challenged in that commercial.

"Rock??, Paper??...Rock??" I mean, is THAT how the games is? Because, as it stands, it looks like she's struggling with the concept of rock, paper, scissors.

you know, i thought i would be annoyed by the commercial, but i actually enjoyed it. it was kind of endearing!

Great, who doesn't applaud the combination of classic beauty and a company of endless entertainment? FYI Bethonie, game is actually called Brain Age 2.

Randy Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 02:42 AM EST

How old are you, Bethonie??? You're making me feel really old right now.

Misyon Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 11:05 PM EST

She did this because of the money, of course. And it is so sad that an Oscar winner would choose to do this stuff just to earn money. Thanks god, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts never do this thing.

What is it with you people who pigeonhole celebs into this stereotype of your own making? You don't know these people and yet you write about them as if you do. Presumptuous and incompetent is what you are Ms. Butler ( not to mention all the rest of your EW hack writer buddies.) Go find yourself a real job.
UGH!!!!!

Bitter Bethonie Butler Bitching Badly Bout Beautiful B(N)icole! Bwahahahaha!!

David Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 09:36 PM EST

It goes to show that beautiful, famous and talented people like Nicole Kidman can also enjoy a Nintendo product - and not just only nerdy, homely, bitter, angsty 30something sad-sack EW staffers like Bethonie Butler!!! bwahahaha! Bitter Bethonie Butler Bitching Badly Bout Beautiful B(N)icole!

Nathan Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:09 PM EST

Yeah, weird like a fox.

furry_tom Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:08 PM EST

Wow, that's sad. She can't find anyone to play rock/paper/scissors with. Also, what kind of crappy game is that? What's the next hot Nintendo game, "Staring Contest"?

Joanie Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:08 PM EST

Nathan's kinda weird.

Nathan Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 06:07 PM EST

I'd like to see work the Wii, jumping around, arms flailing, sweat lightly beginning to form on her pale porcelain skin, oh my lord.

Stephen Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 05:56 PM EST

Well, at least the video game shows more life than her face. (Botox, anyone?).
