Loud songs and lousy commercials

Taking an extra-long weekend in anticipation of next Wednesday's holiday? Got some time to kill? Spend your weekend enjoyng these two lists, both larded with YouTube clips. The first, from Q, counts down the 20 loudest albums of all time. The usual metal and hardcore punk suspects are here (though, as Stereogum jokingly notes, shouldn't Spinal Tap, with amps that go to 11, be here somewhere?). Quibble with their selections if you like, but appreciate the value of a list that offers a link to this rare clip of Lou Reed performing the Velvet Underground's epic noisefest "Sister Ray" from White Light/White Heat (No. 20 on the list).

Meanwhile, Maxim has collected what it calls the crappiest commercials ever. (Link contains some NSFW language.) They're not; in fact, some of them appear on this list of dementedly brilliant local-market TV spots. (No doubt you can think of worse ads.) Still, without this feature, we'd never have come across the clip below, bringing the good news that Satan is, in fact dead, having met his demise in a church parking lot in Waynesville, Mississippi. Guess that makes one more reason to celebrate this holiday weekend.

Those BK commercials are creepy.

The singing Milky Way guy...or is it Snickers?? I can't bear to watch or listen to it anymore.

The pregnancy test commercial that goes something along the lines of the most high tech thing you will ever pee on. My seven year old son was in the room and said "you pee on that thing?" AWKWARD!!!!!

I know a lot of people are Letterman fans here, but Leno loves to make fun of that king. My favorite was when he was one of the predators on Dateline.

Stephen I have to agree with you. See, if you are my age (and you probably are or close to it), we grew up watching the original live action Burger King- King commericals. The actor had a big fluffy orange wig complete with fake mustache and beard. Plus the BK. kids meals came with either a bicycle reflector or a plastic magic trick. The new football mascot with the huge plastic head is just plain creepy.

NO! Worst commercial is the Burger King ad with that king with the big head. CREEPY! And runner up is the "can you hear me now? good." I want to punch that guy square in the face

Oh, no no no no no no no! The absolute WORST commercial of all time is the Diet Coke ad where the guy was talking about how reassuring it is that his wife no linger wears sexy underwear, but instead wears the same "thin, washed-out cotton underwear with little flowers" that his MOM wore when he was a kid! Worst. Commercial. Ever!

I don't understand what their criteria is for loudest album, (it seems like they came up with a mixed bag), but the band I thought of first was number one. I would have picked Raw Power over Funhouse though. MC5, early Dinosaur Jr. or Hüsker Dü are others that come to mind, but how can you argue with something as abstract as "loudest"?

Great idea "Idea For A Post."
I nominate Keri Russell for "Waitress."
Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Maroon 5, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, etc. for Grammy's.
Oh and since the Emmys are coming, I'm praying for some nomination love to Vanessa L. Williams, Masi Oka, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Steve Carrell [He'll get nominated, but with Alec Baldwin I doubt he's gonna win-I mean Alec Baldwin's hilarious, but Steve deserves an Emmy.], and Kenneth the Page from 30 Rock [I forgot his name, sorry].

It would be an awesome post.

Actually, the commercial shown is from Greensville, MS, not Waynesville. Brings back fond memories of when I was there.

I have an idea for a popwatch post. It's halfway through the year, so why not ask readers to give nominations for next year's oscars and grammys with music/movies released so far this year. I nominate Paul McCartney and Kelly Clarkson for music, and Knocked Up and Away From Her for movies. C'mon, this would be an awesome post.
