Frankly, I would have pegged them more as badminton types

Arcade_l If you read the music blogs, you've probably already seen "Arcade Fire Stole My Basketball" this morning, a site alleging that frontman Win Butler snaked some guy's ball from a rec center in Berkeley after an altercation involving court space. You've also most likely seen "Arcade Fire Didn't Steal Dude's Basketball," the response blog purportedly set up by Win's brother Will.

But I would be remiss in my job here at PopWatch if I didn't draw your attention to this post over at Stereogum, which has generated one of the funniest comment threads in a long while. (Warning: It's slightly NSFW.) I won't ruin it with over-explanation; I'll just say I find it hard to believe anyone will ever top "The Decemberists trained a falcon to crap on my head at my wedding."

PS: Cross your fingers that this whole thing is a scam, some sort of viral marketing campaign designed to inform us that the Canadian collective will be replacing the Pussycat Dolls as interstitial music for the upcoming NBA Finals. Because I cannot hear that Pussycat Dolls song ever again. I hate it more than I hate Manu Ginobili, and that is a LOT.

Amy, you're right - Steve is no stranger to flop but for some strange, irrational reason it doesn't bug me when he does it. Must be the love. Ceballos, you just might be right about the Europe/South America soccer influence in basketball. In fact, San Antonio is a lot like the Patsies which in my book is fairly unforgivable. Maybe I can train a falcon to crap on Tony Parker's head next month. ;-)

Ceballos Wed, Jun 6, 2007 at 11:10 AM EST

Amy's right...Nash DOES flop on occasion (though I'd argue whether that hip check from Horry was a flop...I'll give you that him laying out completely after the hit was a bit much).

Broad generalization alert! The whole flopping thing really got out of hand as soon as international players became more prominent in the NBA. A lot of players from Europe and South American grew up watching and playing soccer...where all they do is flop! They've brought that style over to the NBA and that's why it's so prevalent...and I HATE it!

Just so happens the Spurs have a higher volume of international players (Manu, Parker, Oberto, Elson, etc.) than most. Add in the groin kneeing, achilles kicking exploits of Bruce Bowen...and that's probably the reason why people outside San Antonio hate the Spurs...which is a shame because, they're a lot like the Patriots...good guys off the court, and all they do is win.

(sorry for turning this into sportschat)

Amy Wed, Jun 6, 2007 at 10:57 AM EST

Martha, hate to break it to you but Steve Nash is not stranger to the Flop himself and he's still a great player. Get over it people.

Martha Wed, Jun 6, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

Hey, Whit, thanks for the laugh from stereogum...what a great comment thread. The idea of Arcade Fire as playground bullies (and the Decemberists as malevolent falcon trainers) is wicked pissah funny.

My NBA two cents - as a bereft Celtics fan who hearts Steve Nash and likes the Pistons on general principle, the Finals are dead to me. Dead! And Ceballos is right - Manu is Floppy McFlopalot. He and Varejao should have fun competing for fake fouls.

Man Whitney, you were one of my favorite writers on this blog until you dissed my Manu. So what are you, Suns or Jazz fan?
oh and ....
GO SPURS GO!!!!!!!!!!

canuck1975 Wed, Jun 6, 2007 at 07:16 AM EST

Win could steal my basketball anyday.

sananto Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

oh no Whitney, how can you hate Manu?I'm no big sports fan, my friends & girlfriend, weasel me into watching, but hate Manu? oh well, you're still great Whitney

Rev. O.J. Flow Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

Soooooo on the mark with the Pussycat Dolls comment, Whitney. That alleged "tune" they insist on playing is vile beyond words. I'm seriously going to have to kill the audio during ABC's Finals coverage if we can expect to hear that garbage all series long. I can't believe they got me longing for the Blackeyed Peas music they used to feature, but they do. Shoot, I'd even take the John Tesh-scored NBA theme over the Pussycat Dolls. :(

Chris Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 04:50 PM EST

Whatthawhodahe?! Manu rocks and if someone lured the Pussycat Dolls with a stripper pole so I would not here "Right Now!" again would be okay. Though I still can't forgive you for hating Manu, Whitney. You let me down.

jonathan Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

it doesn't appear to be a hoax. on the guy's comment section, there are some interesting comments from "S" (who I am assuming is Sarah Neufeld) and Will about the ball mix-up.

Shelly Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

How can you hate MANU!? This completely changes my views of popwatch....

Robert Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

While we're somewhat on sports here, I noticed that a Whitney Pastorek wrote an article for ESPN the Magazine (posted on their site today). Was that you?

Ceballos Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 03:35 PM EST

Oooh, King...you're a Mavs fan...sorry about that Warriors series.

Still...I'm a Knicks fan! That's WAY more depressing...at least you guys had SOME highs to speak of (during the regular season). The Knicks were so inept, they weren't even bad enough to get a decent shot at winning the lottery (or bad enough to get Isiah fired)

This whole season felt like someone DID train a falcon to crap on Knicks fans collective heads .

KingLouieXVIII Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

Please DO NOT bring up the NBA finals. As a long-time Mavs fan, this has got to be the most depressing basketball season I have ever experienced. The highs were highs, but boy, were the lows more like the depths of hell. I hate the Spurs more than words will ever describe. :(

Ceballos Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

"Right now!...duh-duh, dararara (horn part)..."

Yeah, Whit, I will NOT miss that Pussycat Dolls songs when the playoffs are over!

And as a Texas girl (though I know you're from Houston) I was wondering if you were supporting the Spurs...I guess I got my answer. I hate Manu (aka Floppy Mcflopalot) too! And Bruce Bowen...and now Robert Horry...the Suns wuz robbed!

From a Knicks fan with NO stake in the NBA Finals, go Lebron! (though the Cavs probably have no shot) End of rant.
