Trailer Blazer: 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'

Elizabeth_l One thing I really liked about the original 1998 Elizabeth was how much it resembled The Godfather, even down to the Coppola-style cross-cut editing. In director Shekhar Kapur's hands, Cate Blanchett's Tudor queen became a Michael Corleone figure, moving from naivete to ruthless consolidation of power, at the cost of isolating herself from all close emotional ties to any other human being. Now that Kapur and Blanchett have reunited to tell the rest of Elizabeth's story — the lethal rivalry with Mary Queen of Scots, the all-important war against the Spanish armada — does that mean Elizabeth: The Golden Age will be their Godfather Part II? We can only hope, but this trailer for the sequel (which opens Oct. 12) looks promising. It's two and a half minutes overstuffed with drama, pageantry, and the always welcome Clive Owen (as a scruffy, roguish Sir Walter Raleigh). Really, what more could you ask?

Allison, if you are so obsessed with Elizabeth, you should have known that she was famous for postponing decions until no end. She only made such because of the advises she had receieved. It should be also no secret to you that she was known as the "aging Diva", renounced for her rotten teeth and a large nose- nevertheless dotting on young man. No match at all with the movie here, but for the fact that Lizzy was indeed an exceptional ruler. Apart from being a woman she only had the best in mind for English people. An ambition hardly ony other royal in English History had felt..
The movie was boring and historicaly very wrong. No Nature and God helped defeat the Armada- really, what demented nationalistic nonsense is that?- but sheer cleverness to build lighter, much more flexible ships, moving lightly and injuring fast and gravely the much heavier Spanish ones. Really, I am much disappointed with this movie. But I love Cate Blanchet- no matter how unhealthy and skinny she looks here.

Thanks heaps Bob. I bought the soundtrack and was so disappointed not to find the trailer song listed/included. Your reference was hugely appreciated.

Amanda Sun, Oct 28, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

Meh,
Your description is somewhat accurate. In the tudor court it was near impossible to tell who was loyal to who. There was much treachery and double crossing. It is a good idea to dip in to a history book, but the unknown relationships adds the dimension of the unknown power in the Tudor court.

Yes! it is amazing music... the score for the movie is done by Craig Armstrong and is very good.. but the amazing song used in the end of the trailer is calle "My Name Is Lincoln" by Steve Jablonsky. It's from the movie "The Island" Weird huh? Anyway... it took me some searching to figure that out :-p Hope its helpful though!

does anyone know what song is playing when they show that preview for the movie, its amazing and i want to download it.

I love the trailer. That last scene with the "angel with wings"-like costume I've looked at 25X- I love Cate and Clive is such a "bad boy"

JukaBruka Thu, Sep 27, 2007 at 09:55 PM EST

I, too am my faathers daughter! Elizabeth is one of my top 4 favorite movies. That movie was H O T. and the new movies looks like more of the same. YESSSSSS

Allison Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 05:13 PM EST

I am truly obsessed with Liz and that time period..I cannot get enough of her, and was elated to see her continuing story coming back to the screen,,She was an amazing figure in history, and accomplished so much. After inheriting a financially broken country, divided by religion, and at war with France and Spain, her reign ended with an overflowing treasury, the war won, and her country unified under one religion. What an amazing woman!!.Can't wait!!!

I just saw the trailer and am looking forward to the whole movie. Can't be all bad with Cate Blanchett AND Geoffrey Rush!!
Her comment "They shall not pass" was a little annoying - too Lord of the Ringish.

Mira Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 10:01 AM EST

I cannot wait ti see this!
Fabulous.

to MEH above- perhaps you should have stayed awake in your history classes. Elizabeth I was fabulous. Do a crash course on English history before you see Eliz Golden Years

meh Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

Am I the only one who thought the original Elizabeth was totally impenetrable. Good performances aside, I never had a clue who anyone was or what their relationships were to each other.

Lisa Thu, Jun 28, 2007 at 09:09 AM EST

Best movie news EVER! I can't believe this is the first I'm hearing. All the elements that made Elizabeth awesome PLUS Clive freakin' Owen! I'm soooo there.

luste Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 11:14 PM EST

Can't WAIT to see this one. Cate is pretty much the best EVER.

Devon Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

The trailer does look great and I am excited for the pic, I just wish they would stop using music from THE ISLAND in trailers. There is more music out there...lol. But still a good trailer.

musicdweller Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 07:49 PM EST

Looks good! I will see any film with Cate and Clive, and Elizabeth was amazing. My only gripe is with the shots of the boats. Looks a bit fake. But otherwise, I'm psyched to see it!

Other Paige Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

Cate was soooooooooooo robbed of the Oscar she deserved for Elizabeth by Gwyneth Paltrow, who didn't even pull off a boy well!

So now she gets another crack at it. And I hope the movie's as fun.

Mozz Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

Elizabether, was one of the best movie experiences i've ever had, I still quote from it. I still get looks, when I say "I am my father's daughter, I can do anything." especially weird looks from my father. My point and I do have one is... I CANNOT WAIT for this MOVIE!

Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 05:59 PM EST

Looks visually stunning, but the HBO Elizabeth I miniseries will be hard to beat.

Sarah Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

What more could I ask for?

More love scenes with the steamy Joseph Fiennes. DUH.

Blue4U1980 Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 05:20 PM EST

I have said it before ... and I will say it again ... Cate Blanchette was frickin' ROBBED that year at the Oscars! I will go to my grave knowing that her performance should have won her the little gold statue for Best Actress ... Hands Down.

Emperor Norton Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

Just wondering - could you cram a few more ads on these pages, you criminals?

Rebecca B. Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

2007: Best year ever.

Heather Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 03:47 PM EST

I'll watch Clive Owen in anything. Arthur, Croupier, Gosford Park, you name it.

KC Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

I hope it's equal in quality to not only the first film, but the recent HBO version with Helen Mirren.

aramis Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

Ok...why is it that I'm just NOW hearing of this sequel? I mean, the first one is a CLASSIC (and it's pure madness that Cate lost to Gwenyth in that Oscar race because Cate's was the MUCH better performance). I really hope they continue just as the first movie did in terms of tone and style. I'm so there for this film! I HEART YOU CATE!

Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

Clive Owen scruffy? He looks pretty hot to me!

Angel Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

I would be a lot more excited about this if they hadn't had to kill Christopher Eccleston off in the first one... even Clive Owen is no substitute. Cate is wonderful, though, so I'm sure the movie will be great.

Scott P Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

I'd ask to see Cate Blanchette in that dress she wore to the Oscars the year she was nominated for Elizabeth. That would rule.

Rahul Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

I am surprised that they're doing a sequel after ten years, but it's great. I'm so in love with Cate Blanchett (and I saw Samantha Morton in the trailer too!), so I'm very excited about this.

jcarla -Rush was in the trailer, don't worry

Chloe fan Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

Wait. They are making a sequel and I'm just hearing about it now? Should I blame myself or you EW for not making me aware of this sooner? This is going to be so good.

The Other Boleyn Girl as a major motion picture.
The Tudors on Showtime.
Now, Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

It's weird. Could this be a sign that people in Hollywood care about quality again?

jcarla Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 01:18 PM EST

I hope Geoffrey Rush is back too. He really showed the intrigue that was happening then.

Mac Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

....is Cantona in it?

Mac Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:55 PM EST

What a ridiculous resume. That wasn't a consolidation of power, it was a garnering of savvy - she always had the power.

One of my fave movies / stories / actresses / monarchs / periods of history.....

herstory Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

Elizabeth is in my top 15 fav. movie list, I can't wait for this to come out!

Sarah Wed, Jun 27, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

Is it wrong to drool through an entire trailer? WOW! Now there's hope for something to look forward to in the fall, and to tide me over until season 2 of The Tudors. Cate Blanchett is superb as always. I can't wait!
