Guest blogger Dierks Bentley breaks down his Bonnaroo

Dierks_l I can't believe this worked: Country Superstar Dierks Bentley is here to blog for you, PopWatchers! That is WAY better than Heidi from The Hills!! Please give him your full and undivided attention!

I'm currently staying in a hotel in Scottsdale, AZ. Yesterday I was walking to the pool when I noticed Sting was walking in front of me. Two worlds collided... the hot, crazy, and naked world of Bonnaroo and the plush and peaceful world of this quaint desert hotel. I could have said something to Sting, as having both played Bonnaroo last week would have been grounds for at least an introduction, but opted to leave him alone. I knew he was seconds away from getting germed at the pool, which he did. ("Are you Stang??" a woman asked. No, he’s just a dude that also has the same unmistakeable looks and air of an international rock star. She then proceeded to follow him and go sit down on the lawn chair next to him.) I could say with certainty that had I asked Sting the question "So, what did you think of Bonnaroo?" the word "Wow," raised eyebrows, and a slight shaking of the head would have been the answer. And then I'm sure security would have been called...

[more from Dierks after the jump]

But it's hard to sum up the Bonnaroo experience with a short answer. Physically, it was dry, dusty and hot as hell out there. The fact that that stops no one from gettin' their party on speaks of how much these people love music... or how much in fact their party is "on"... and that makes for great people watching. When we first entered the gates to the general area, no one I was with really said much for the first 30 minutes as the visual senses were in "Holy s---, a beer truck has flipped over and we’ve got to grab all the free ones!!!!" mode. Completely overloaded. Other than the fact we were wearing all black as we usually do and were completely sober at this point, my band and I kind of started to fit in with the rest of the crowd. The common thing everyone shares at Bonnaroo is the music, and we're fans, just like anyone else. (The way our bass player Robbie Harrington morphed into a thirteen year old Guitar Center groupie when we were offered passes to watch Tool from the balcony in the stage left wings is certain proof of this.) The day was a little scheduley for me as there was a lot of press to do, but I was able to watch Paulo Nutini and the Kings of Leon; I also met Michael from Spearhead... guess he’s kind of like the godfather of Bonnaroo... great dude who was very cool to the only mainstream country act on the bill: me.

As far as our show went, we were all really blown away by the response we got, from the moment we walked on stage. The fact that some female audience members chose to use alternative methods [Ed note: "alternative"? it was spring break in Panama City out there] for expressing their appreciation was not lost for a second on me and the guys. The fun really started for us when we invited Sam Bush and Buddy Miller up on stage halfway through our set. It went from being a show-- albeit at one of the coolest festivals we’d ever played-- to a musical experiment of sorts, the sort that used to happen all the time down in the bars and clubs of Lower Broadway in Nashville, when we invited friends to get up and sit in. Except this time we weren’t doing it with a tip jar in front of us and 20 people in the crowd... it was at Bonnaroo, with 5000+ people... at Bonnaroo where there was an air of nervousness as to whether we would even fit in. But we did. Actually, I think we more than fit in... the show totally rocked and we left the stage with high spirits and and the hope of getting to come back again next year.

Cassidy just walked in and dropped a USA Today in front of me... turns out there are two pictures on the back of the Life section from Bonnaroo: one is of Sting and one is of me. Damn! I should have said something to him! I'm going out to the pool right now, and when I see him, I'm going to germ the s--- out of him. "HEY STANG!!!"

It's great to know, that the artists enjoy putting on the shows as much as fans enjoy watching them.

Susie Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 07:44 PM EST

I forgot to mention- when you explained the process of writing "Long Trip Alone" and then sang it to us, it was truly an indescribable experience, one I'll never forget...

Susie Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 07:43 PM EST

I have to admit that I went to the Dierks show with the intention of leaving halfway through to see The Roots (I've seen Dierks twice before) but I was so taken up in the vibe and incredible music I stayed for the whole thing and am very glad I did. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS OF THE WEEKEND!! When I go back next year, I hope you'll be there too! PS- I was next to the "alternatively clothed" girls on the shoulders of some guys, you were a class act about it while encouraging everyone to have fun in thier own way- kudos!

I catered a concert for sting a few years ago for a company. He's a very nice guy. You should have said something. I did and got to see the rest of the concert up front.

Holly Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

"Wow" is pretty much the only word to describe Bonnaroo. I'm not huge into country music but I went to see Dierks because I had very specific orders from a dear friend to kidnap him and return with him in my trunk. I thought I would stay for the first 20 or 30 minutes and then move on to a nearby concert but I ended up having such a good time I stayed for the whole show. He's HOT! And, I have a picture of one particularly enthusiastic female fan mentioned in the blog if anyone's interested... Dierks?

Telly Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

Enough about good music! I want overproduced white person hip-pop!

ren Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 08:49 PM EST

poor julie. i think she's just envious of the good time we had, that's all. this festival is extremely relevant to pop culture. why, jon stewart even made a joke about the 'roo a few weeks back! that has to count for something in your book! also, i know how awful it is sitting in the cube for 8 hours a day. the tv watch section is dead; there are no good doc jensen articles to keep us warm at night; therefore, you rely on this for your escape. just stop hating and drink the kool-aid! btw, if you saw the line-up of artists, i'm pretty sure there were a couple of acts you would have liked. maybe your age is a barrier to you liking this festival. i'm in my 30s and i felt ancient in comparison to most of the folks there so it's understandable.

sdr Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

as i said in an earlier post, i'm thrilled to have updates from bonnaroo. i've wanted to go to this or coachella for a long time. i would certaintly not consider most of these acts obscure- honestly, if you do consider them obscure maybe you should stop reading a quality entertainment website such as this and come back only when the american idol juggernaut is back in full effect.

Sarah Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 02:13 PM EST

Whitney, if I send you my phone number, will you give it to Dierks? I refer to him as my husband for a reason.

(Side note: If you're not interested in a post, why would you read it? It's not like it was a secret that this post was about Bonnaro)

treacly Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

julie. we are more ice sculpture than we think. in the elusive tunes of bonnaroo 100,000 people throw their arms up over their heads and say yes! while bees are disappearing and you are in your cubicle a cloud of octopus ink. a 100,000 person city here and gone in days and the music is reverberating out over tennessee up into the blue blue sky and if you step outside you can hear it. julie! you can hear it! this is the beautiful moment documented for you. a guitar chord echoing in the time of the disapperance of the bees. they pop and flit and float over gardens in graceful arcs. you can hear them in the gorgeous melody of wilco's impossible germany. julie. say yes! yes! before the ice sculpture melts and the bonnaroo stages are dismantled to a field in tennessee which hosted a city of 100,000. say it with me, julie. yes. to the universe. julie. yes!

tiamria Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

Hey, Dirks, don't cut yourself short. Sting is probably thinking he should go up to YOU! You rock. :-)

idiot wind Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

a gathering of many of the worlds best and most popular musicians and comedians isn't relevant pop culture? someone's been watching too much "simple life"... keep up the good work, whitney! and lollapallooza rocks!

furry_tom Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

Treacly, you didn't hear the announcement? We're supposed to stay away from the brown acid ; )

Robert Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 01:34 PM EST

Julie, I'd advise you to ignore Popwatch again from August 3-5...because that's when they'll be covering Lollapalooza. And, while you may see no posts, a lot of us enjoy reading about the acts we plan to see live, and we just are too busy to write lengthy entries about how much we enjoy the post, or don't enjoy the post. This post just illustrated how busy I am at work today....

Linda Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

Dierks is not only an entertaining musician, he's a great writer. Something to fall back on if the music gig doesn't work boy!

BrandonP Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 12:53 PM EST

Dierks Bentley is one of the better mainstream Country acts around right now...and he's pretty darn funny.

treacly Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

i'd love to comment on julie and her very angry co-workers but i won't. instead. i'd like to point out the popular culture phenomenon that is the gathering of 100,000 people in tennessee. 100,000 people is bigger than countless cities in the world. so the congregation of these beautiful people. this sunshine of youth beneath blue skies and slivers of moons is a wonder that should not only be reported on but taken to heart. In this time of uncertainty and war. In this time of the disappearance of the bees over garden flowers. We should read these reports with tears in our eyes. That music matters. That citites can assemble in peace and dismantle to a field. julie the bees that pop and land and float over perfectly red and orange blossoms are disappearing and in the middle of tennessee 100,000 people are raising their arms up over their heads and saying yes to the universe. they are saying yes to the people in your office of fluorescent lighting. say it to the universe with me, julie, yes

Chris Willman Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 12:36 PM EST

Yes, Whitney! Enough of that obscure indie rock like Dierks Bentley!

Julie Mon, Jun 18, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

Whitney,
I love reading your entries, you are in my top 2 favorite writers (Oh Slezak) but who CARES about this festival? No one! People aren't responding, people are skipping over it, people at my job are mad! It has been ruining Pop Watch for days and I am sick of it. This happened a few months ago with that Coachella festival too. It needs to stop. Seriously, please, stop. Go back to writing about relevant POP CULTURE things...not obscure indie rock.

I really do like you a lot, I am just sick of seeing this nonsense.
