No longer 'Crazy in Love' with Beyoncé

Jun 28, 2007, 05:42 PM | by Bethonie Butler

Categories: Music

Beyonce_l Beyoncé was a star at Tuesday's BET Awards (pictured), taking home two of the six prizes for which she was nominated, including R&B artist of the year and best video for the Ne-Yo-penned "bad all by myself" anthem "Irreplaceable." And yet, I'm in no hurry to congratulate her.

Seeing that this was becoming a pattern of mine, I was starting to wonder if there was something wrong with me. Am I a "hater?" I'll agree that B's got talent, but I've decided that I must get this off of my chest:

I am so over Beyoncé.

And I'm in good company: Popera artist Rufus Wainwright recently told Spin magazine that he was "sick" of the R&B/pop singer.

I used to be a big Beyoncé fan. In middle school I performed an anti-drug parody of Destiny's Child's "No, No, No" in front of my social studies class. I memorized the lyrics to most of the songs on the group's sophomore album, The Writing's on the Wall. I was there through the first and second Destiny's Child lineup, and when B had the nerve to unveil a third lineup, did I scoff and run away? No. They were survivors and I loved them, especially Beyoncé.

And then she went solo. It was glorious. I belted out "Crazy in Love" while copying B's runway walk in my dorm room. I wasn't mad that she recycled Destiny Child's "Dangerously in Love" or that she (and I think Kelly Rowland) said some variation of "I love you" some 27 times in the last 45 seconds of the song alone. And I overlooked that creepy ode-to-Daddy track, in which she croons "I want my unborn son to be like my daddy."

But last summer, something started to change. I loved "Deja Vu," the first single off of B'Day, though most people didn't; EW reviewer Jody Rosen called it "oddly flat." Still, beyond that funky, bass-filled track, B'Day was a big disappointment to me. And I realized that somewhere between being Bootylicious! and a whole lotta woman, Beyoncé had become larger than life. I couldn't go anywhere without hearing "to the left, to the left," or without one of my friends posting Facebook pictures of themselves in "freakum dresses."

It was then that I decided to lay off of the Beyoncé for a while. It wasn't that I thought I had a problem or anything. But it would give me time to enjoy other songstresses. She almost pulled me back with "Beautiful Liar" (that whole Shakira/Beyoncé twin thing in the video was manipulative!), but then she went and did like 10 different versions, including one with herself.

And therein lies the problem, PopWatchers. It doesn't matter what Rufus or I think. The only person that truly needs to get over Beyoncé is... Beyoncé

What do you think? Am I right? Or do I need to get over myself?

Melborne Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

Um. Beyonce recorded a version with herself BEFORE shakira added her vocals.

allright all right...YOU only get tired of something when YOU taker in to much of it. YOU have a choice as to what YOU take in... find something else like your school work or job to concentrate on whether than completely denying someone who has talent beyond words of explination.. YOU could never walk a day in her shoes let alone a celebrities bcuz it is much easier to sit at a computer and type about badly about someone more so than it is to perform live infront of millions of viewers and sell millions of records.. give repspect where respect is fcukin due.. REAL TALK... and all this talk about ready for someone new in 5 years you'll be sayin the sam dam thing about that person.. so basically youre the one with the problem you dont know what you like and you consstantly need change

B is not all that she cant sang, if u listen 2 her lyrics, she is really talkin.Compare her 2 fantasia, mariah etc..,and when i say compare, im not talkin about body, im talkin about singing. Now if u want 2 label beyonce in a category, label her with ashanti, keshia hoe,j hoe, and etc. All they do is talk on their songs and scream.and walk around naked like some hoes(sex sells) Put all the people in that category on some cloths and take the skin color away, and watch how they flop.im so sick and tired of all these scants getting all this recongnition when all real sisters get no credit this is not how da game go and these fake people dat keep adding fire to the flame need to open their eyes and get real.take away da makeup and hair and watch how they look every woman i know that wake in the morning iz not pretty.lets stop being so stupid and colored blined cause in the end GOD has da say so be 4 a rich man enter d kingdom of GOD a camel well walk thru the eye of a needle.Hi u durrin!!!!

Bethonie,

All this really means is that you're growing up and moving beyond hero workship or icon making or whatever it is you kids call it today.

It's a GOOD thing, as long as you don't replace one obsession with another.

Fan isn't a short form of fantastic - it's short for fanatic. Not something to aspire to.

It's GOOD to get over adolescent crushes and idolization. And the
Beyonce you fixated upon isn't a real person at all. She is one of the most carefully (and obsessively) marketed people I've seen. No wonder you were overwhelemed by her image when you were young.

Gabba gabba, welcome to the non-fan-people. We accept you.

AND TO TOM, BEYONCE IS ALL THAT. ANY GIRL CAN WEAR A WEAVE MAKE UP N OUTFIT BUT NO ONE CAN BRING IT LIKE BEE! THERE WILL NEVER BE A BEYONCE #2. RIHANNA WAS A POOR SAMPLE. BEYONCE IS RARE AND IRREPLACEABLE! LONG LIVE BEYONCE

JOHN Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 05:39 AM EST

I'M REALLY SICH OF THE HO TOO ITS TIME TO MOVE ON I HAVEN SEEN SOME HOTER GURLS THE BEYONCE AND B IS NOT ALL THAT I MEAN GIVE MY GIRL SOME MAKE UP AND A HAIR PICE AND A HO OUT FIT AND SHE'LL BE BIG SH*T

Suga Mama Fri, Dec 14, 2007 at 04:28 PM EST

I kinda know where you are coming from. I am the hugest beyonce fan. but at the same time, i am getting tired of her. but beyonce is not big-headed, she is the shi! so u need to get over yourself cuz there is no one better than my bee. one of the reasons why I or anyone else who is a fan of her that is gettin tired of her, is maybe bcuz i listen to her songs a million times a day or watch her dvd everytime i get a chance. yes it is an obsession lol so i made myself tired of her. but never say "beyonce needs to get over beyonce" cuz if we all were beyonce we would never change! i loveeee you beyonceeeeeeee and im waitin til summer of '08 for your comeback hit to come out! i cant wait to go to her next concert. she is and will always be my favorite artist.

Britt Wed, Dec 12, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

Listen. Beyonce is one of the most beautiful women in the world. She is also one of the best performers out there. If you all are so wonderful as to judge her, then maybe you should try doing things yourselves. Yes, beyonce doesn't have alot of covering on her body when she performs, but those lights can get very hot, and all of that dancing gets very tiring, and she very possibly could get overheated.
Don't say she is fat. So what if she isn't stick thin. She is still beautiful, and she has got curves, which is just as attractive to guys.
Beyonce is a class act.
Face it. She has it all.

Pat Sat, Nov 3, 2007 at 01:55 AM EST

I Agree with what you say about her Latest DVD. It was okay,Should have been better. She seems to try not to
have a big head but I think she Battles with that aspect.

OpinionDistributor Fri, Oct 26, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

Yes, get over yourself dear. Now who's fault is it that Beyonce's making headlines? Do she call up the papers, magazines, news broadcasts, BLOGS and asks them to TALK about her? Or do you all use her name to garner attention, negative or otherwise? And to the others, she will NOT GET SO MUCH ATTENTION WHEN SOMEONE COMES ALONG THAT CAN OUTSHINE, OUTDO AND OUTPERFORM HER. Until then, stop reading BEYONCE blogs, stop watching BEYONCE news, and stop listening to BEYONCE music. What's hard about that?

silly :-)

see... this is sort of annoying. when justin timberlake was getting waaay too much attention for his "d*ck in a box" short (which is funny the first two times you watch it), and started getting everyone to say "SexyBack" and is on his 5th single off his own album and is on 50 Cent's new single, no one tells him to stop it, or that he's larger than life. you can't possibly say that all of beyonce's music sounds the same and then not say it about any other artist. just thinking... maybe you're hating on her cause it has something to do with she's a woman, black, and she's taking an aggressive approach in putting out music.

to start with... who cares what Rufus Wainwright has to say about anything? The guy's a ho-ish druggie who thinks crooning sappy ballads over pianos is the best music ever. I admit Beyonce needs to back off, but I think "B'Day" is one of her strongest albums ever and she definitely deserves respect for the work she's done. But yeah she needs to take a siesta or something.

Thu, Jul 19, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

could any of you haters do what she has done? hell even she admits she wants a break. and for a woman,an african american woman she has to get it while the gettin is good. hell I bet many would change their mind about her cd being sorry if she never said she did it in 2 weeks and furthermore all she has been doing is touring. she hasn'tit could be forced by her management, it could be circumstances with owing people a, plus there were a lot of things she didn't want to do but her management made her so she had to. lastly, when was the last time you have seen her on television except for an awards event? yall are just some stoopid ass internet youtube addicts who burned yourselves out on her. hell find a way to employ people like she has done at her young age and able them to see the world. how many of you could do what she has done? yeah the dancing in the high heels are a bit much but hell someone is demanding her and she is just meeting the druling demands whether she likes it or not

I love B its just that im sick of her choreographer stealing other artist's shows like her 2006 vma performance was a copy of britney's 2003 ama performance and let's not talk about her 2007 performance entrance bears a striking resemblance to a show put on by Kylie Minogue back in 2002 on her "Come Into My World" Fever tour, she opened the concert encased in a robot costume, which was based on designs from the 1927 film Metropolis by famed Austrian director Fritz Lang.Beyonce, like Kylie, emerged from the space-age suit and began to sing and dance after its metallic panels opened up electronically.

However, the former Destiny's Child did throw in some uniquely "Bootylicious" robot dance moves at the BET awards. Now i'm not saying i hate B but i think it's time for her to get some creativity of her own now who's with ME......

Lisa,

Thanks for helping me get a good laugh today. That's funny how you try to call me out when clearly you've been quite engaged by this blog (including my 3-4 comments). I won't call you names either (unlike you calling me looney)...I guess that's what you do when you don't really have a point to make.

lisa Sun, Jul 8, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

@ Deja Vu

I like Beyonce but you sound looney fussing with people on this blog. You claim you could care less about people agreeing with you, but this is your 3rd and 4th time posting on this blog. As a fan of Beyonce, I think she needs to take a break so she can come back hard and better the next time. As for how Jay-Z treats women, that is common knowledge. There is even a video of him slapping a woman...look it up.

@ Maya
Jay-Z may be paid, but I hope you look for more in a man than that because being PAID does not make a man. Also, remember God can give it to you and he can take it away from you. Just because you have it today, doesn't mean you will have it tomorrow.

Maya Sun, Jul 8, 2007 at 01:11 AM EST

I feel that Beyonce has talent, but it's not as great as everyone claims it to be. She is just marketed well."B'Day" wasn't all that great of a CD, but she had a few cuts on there that I liked. And as far as Jay not being CEO of Def Jam, it's all good. Look at the people who got passed over for him to get that job, including LL Cool J. He'll be paid for the rest of his life. Not bad for a "woman bashing" dude from Marcy, huh?

Deja Vu Sat, Jul 7, 2007 at 09:29 PM EST

What - I figured your next move would be to start attcking me because that's exactly what haters do. I didn't know you were so tight with Jay-Z. I guess you have first hand knowledge about how he disrespects women huh? Right.

I wasn't playing the race card at all...you wouldn't be so sensitive about it if you were not part of the problem.

Furthermore, I could care less about you or anyone else agreeing with me. You don't have to buy her music or support her in any way...As I stated before, I just think it's sad that people like you would rather focus on the negative. Attacking someone you don't know seems crazy to me, but oh I forgot you are cool with both Beyonce and Jay-Z. That's why you can comment so much on how they are. LMAO.

Fri, Jul 6, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

i agree. she is completely overrated. i started disliking her when she butchered all the nominated songs at the oscars a couple years back. her french was atrocious. she also sounds incredibly ignorant in all her interviews....

i think beyonce is extremely overated. She is pretty, she can sing, but she isnt a goddess as ppl seem to hold her as. this article is true. she needs to take a loooooong break because its getting a lil tiresome and annoying hearing and watching her. she's too wild. mayb if she calmed down a bit i'll b able to take her in such large doses.

Deja Vu

So lame of you to use the race card in this matter. Are you imposing that black people have to support Beyonce just because she is a successful black woman? Where is your common sense in that logic? There are more important things for black people to worry about and Beyonce is NOT one of those things. Invest in REAL matters like voting and education...and stop worrying about people agreeing with you when it comes to OVEREXPOSED Beyonce.

I never liked Jay-Z, so for you to say EVERYBODY liked him shows how UNeducated you are. I never cared for that man...look at how he treated black women in his life. Look at how he presented women of color in his videos...he (and others like him) has done more harm to black women image than anybody.

Jay-Z has evolved but he is about to lose his job as Def Jam CEO because his perfomance has been a joke. Just because you can sell drugs and sell your products, doesn't make you CEO material.

The truth hurts...deal with it.

Deja Vu Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

To whoever responded to me but didn't leave a name on Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST.....

I think you are trying to limit her talent by saying she is only popular because she shakes her a--. Did you see her on that VH-1 special when she killed it OR the Oscars? She wasn't shaking anything in either of those performances but people like you would rather focus on whatever negative angle you can find. Hey, it's life...People hate when they see others on top...it's just a matter of fact. The same thing has happened to Jay-Z...EVERYBODY loved him when he first came out and now that he is evolving (and out of touch for most) then he has sold out.

I am especially disappointed in the sistas who are filled with so much negativity. You would rather find fault in her rather than celebrate her accomplishments. Don't even get me started. This is certainly why we as black people still have so far to go.

By the way, this is from an educated black woman thriving in Chicago!!!!

kennedy Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

lol..to: huh? im not excited..i think everyone needs to calm down..im not downing madonna or beyonce..i was just saying that both get or have been overexposed..and i dont agree with someone above saying beyonce is copying j-lo..first beyonce can actually sing live...and what exactly is she copying from j-lo that j-lo hasnt copied from someone else..and so what if beyonce is singing in spanish..i sing in spanish and french..and many other well known artist sing songs in other languages. i.e..lol.madonna..rufus wainwright..etc

Christine Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

Look for those of you that are Danferously In Love w/ Beyonce than do what you do however the fact still remains that Beyonce is over epxosed and need to give us a break from her and vice vera remeber back in the dayhow the hottest singer and/or actor would have a year or two full of success and then the would leave ths scene for a year or so and then come back full force? Well the reason stars that take that route to their success have longevity is because they give us (the public) and breal from them and they get a break ftom us. Can Beynce sing, yes, although a lot of times she is shouting at me instead of singing. Can she dance not really because I have seen some video chicks dance a hell of a lot better than B. And as for the songwriter well as I once told "What you do in the dark will come to light." so I guess her lying is start to come to the light. I read the article in Vibe and have heard her state a number of times she doesn't have a laptop, etc and gues what she lied!

Chris Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 03:16 AM EST

I also think she needs to stop copying other artists especially, Jennifer Lopez. That's right everything Beyonce has done JLO did it first!

Christopher Handal Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 03:11 AM EST

I'm sorry, but I completely agree. She is way too full of herself and what the hell is it with the music in spanish. Girl you are black and you should present and stop trying to be latina. I mean why is this woman on the cover of so many latin magazines. She's the next Michael Jackson or Britney Spears, great superstar gone out of control and ready to go straight down the drain.

Beyonce Stans,
How can she be jealous if she was a fan for so long. Your over-zealous support of Beyonce makes you lose credibility. Most people are over Beyonce; this is not news. People are getting sick of her, and we hope that this lead to her taking a break for a while. The media does not make her overexposed--she exploits the media, like all artists, does promo, performances, tours, etc. If she wants no media, she can have no media by living discretely.

Annie Wed, Jul 4, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Beyonce needs a break. I'm sick of her; she needs to grow up and figure out who she is. She is so contrived and articifial; she does not appear to be very intelligent in her interviews; and I can't help but hope that she could release music with substance if she spent some time on reflextion rather than on blinging and posturing. This is why she has never been a good actress--she lacks depth.

jen Wed, Jul 4, 2007 at 10:53 AM EST

I'm glad to see people are tired of Beyonce. She act so stuck up. Her music sucks and and her character has chanced since being with Jay-z. People need to stop buying into her crap.

Whew! I thought it was just us! We were sick of her long before her solo career, though the first album was a startling, enjoyable creation. But, until she loses Jay Z and that bulls#@! attitude of superiority....well. Besides having Tiger Woods' grow into a dark chocolate diva, nothing would be better than if Miss B would realize it's time to take a year or two off.

So....we decided to do it for her.

We've put together a mix of unsigned artists who offer an enjoyable and well needed break from Miss B. They may not have Swiss Beatz and other producers toying with their sound or Ne-Yo ghostwriting her work, but...they are 100% Beyonce Free!

Hear from Saaphyri, Jimmy "Jam", Tango and more about everything that happened on their shows during their exclusive podcast interviews with BlackPressRadio [dot] com.

You won't hear this anywhere else...and you won't hear anything Beyonce! Now...that's what's up!

Listen right now at BlackPressRadio [dot] com.

Fact: This is admitting that your artist can't succeed unless Beyonce is gone.
Nah, these other people are B clones and that's why they don't succeed. Even poor Kelly was doing the B thing at the BET awards and I was so disappointed. I just need a break from B PERIOD (and she can take the majority of hip hop with her)!

glrfc Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 07:36 AM EST

I'm not tired of Beyonce. I think she's a wonderful performer who gives her performance her all. I can't wait to see her when she gets to the Queen City, Charlotte, NC.

Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 03:56 AM EST

I couldnt agree with you more. I have been bored of her for years now.All her songs are exactly the same, she has NO orginality and NO creativity. She is talented fair enough, but she has reduced herself to the level where she has to at least be semi naked in her songs to get into the top ten and frankly its boring. Pull the stick out of your backside love and get a reality check. And before any of you drones start saying i'm "hating" i'm not because when her tits and arse go down south i doubt she'll still be as popular. She is a media whore.

Keepin it Real Tue, Jul 3, 2007 at 03:53 AM EST

Everyone is tired of Beyonce because she is the same, tired Beyonce since Destiny's Child and nothing has changed about her: we still don't know who she is in terms of personality, she still sings about love and love's loss, and she even rocks the same hair color! Why are we sick of Beyonce? Because she does the same thing over and over and over again. Its redundant.

I think she should go home to Mama Tina, make some more pirate-like shirts for her clothing line, and re-discover who she is and present that person to the world. Beyonce is not authentic-- she's a machine! :)

AnkhLife Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:47 PM EST

Beyonce just happens to be a very controlled and contrived person. Born to the same type of parents, and dating the same type of guy. Her success is inevitable. But turn down the volume sometimes and take a serious look at her. There is nothing natural about her skills. She looks like a big oaf doing some of those dance moves and if you sometimes listen and not look her, her voice can grate your nerves. What you project to the masses they will belief. Take Monique for example. She believes she is big and beautiful. And so she is. Also, notice that B is always initiating affection with Jay. He'll hang his arm around her neck like a coat rack. But, she kisses him sits on him looks at him. He rarely shows any loving or protecting ways towards her. But, who else would a man trying to clean up his image choose to date. And she can do for him as much as he does for her financially ...nuff said.

Amanda Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:10 PM EST

OMG I am so sick of her, too. She's trying SOOOOOO hard every since J-Hud got all the limelight for the movie. Beyonce actually thought that because of her fame, people would see through her talentless performance. OMG. Please, B. In a room with REAL singers - ahem, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, and Jamie Foxx -- Beyonce isn't far from an American Idol castoff.

lalya Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 09:08 PM EST

I have to say i wonder the same thing. But the problem is she's being busted witha couple of white lies . first she say she don't drink ahh,huh i noticed she had a drink in her hand and looking a little tipsy at the 40\40 club. then she said she dosen't get on the internet but have a lap topwhen she was on vaction.she said she worte irraplacable come to find out ney'o wrote that, far as her performance on the BET award show it was off the chain but that was from kyle mongue who done it coustom and all in 2002 But lately all her perfomances are coming off of some one else so hence the name "SWAGGER JACKER" That chick so overexposed i'm beginnging not to like her either

? Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 08:46 PM EST

Deja Vu: could you stop for a minute and think that it is possible that not everyone looks at booty shaking as a success? Yes, she can sing, but how many of her songs have any real depth? I would like to see her (after a much needed break) do something with real meaning and without being reduced to just a behind-banger.

mia wms Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 08:42 PM EST

I thought I was the only one sick of Beyonce.I mean, I truly love all of songs however, I think she is OVER EXPOSED I gurantee you that she will eventually do something stupid or get "caught out there" doing something and then she'll finally "fall back". I'm just tired of her, Next..,

bethonie get over yourself
you sound like a hater

Deja Vu Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:47 PM EST

I am always amazed how people critique the work ethic of Beyonce. If she was laying on her a-- not doing anything then there would be that to complain about. She is a STAR in every sense of the word, and it's unfortunate that her beauty and talent generates so much negativity. It saddening how people look to tear other people down. I am proud of her and all of her accomplishments but I guess I am also very happy with my own life. Typically it is those people who are frustrated by their own circumstance who are most hateful. And that is a very sad truth.

To Darn Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

Darn: I know this is hard for you, but do you think you can stop shaking your booty long enough to close the hole in your face? I am not jealous of Miss Shake-my-booty -into -the ground-woman. Sorry I cannot make you happy today, but you sure can give someone the gift of happiness today by shutting your trap. And please, enjoy the rest of your day.

er Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:01 PM EST

from beyonceitis.com:
Myth #3 Beyonce is Overexposed. She should Sit Down and Give (insert name of your favorite artist) a chance to shine.

Fact: This is admitting that your artist can't succeed unless Beyonce is gone. This is like going back 15 years ago and telling Michael Jordan to sit out a season so that other teams could win.

It is also believed that once Beyonce takes a break that Beyonceitis will be cured, however Beyonce has f*cked up the industry so much, that artists will always be compared to her, and her name will always be bought up in topics, even ones that don't have anything to do with her.

To Darn Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:57 PM EST

Yes, you are jealous. Get over yourself. Stop being a hater and admit your jealous.

Beyonce Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

So what if I shake it baby? At least I am shaking my behind all the way to the bank. Jay Z and I will spend all the money all of you bottom lovers keep pouring into my pocket. I have to give it my best shake before my butt falls to the ground. By that time, I will be retired, living in Tahoe. Who knows, maybe I will do Vegas in a few years and join Elton and Celine. I have to be the center of attention.

shelby Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:09 PM EST

the end summed it up quite nicely for me. beyonce needs to get over herself.

this article rocks.

Kim Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

Fatima-Did you see the Deja Vu video of Beyonce humping and grinding against the wall? Did you see her fall to her knees in front of Jay-Z? Please! This girl SELLS sex. She even sings about her Kitty Kat.
[Jay-Z Rap]
I used to run base like Juan Pierre
Now I run the bass hi hat and the snare
I used to bag girls like Birkin Bags
Now I bag B ([Beyonce:] Boy you hurtin' that)!

What other reasons why she would say "hurtin that"?

To Darn Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 04:46 PM EST

You are crying, and no, I am not jealous of a woman who thinks that her only asset is her rear-end. Stop dreaming, or better yet, wake up from your nightmare.

Stacey Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 04:17 PM EST

I think what people have to understand is that is Beyonce is a world Icon now. So you might as well get used to her because she is not going anywhere, anytime soon. Love or hate her she has made her mark in history. I don’t think its hating to say you’re tired of her. It’s all about personal preference. Do you want to ride the Beyonce boat or not. I’m riding to the bloody end........

Shomma-Momma Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 04:10 PM EST

Someone mentioned that Beyonce hasn't taken a break, I think that's the problem. The entertainers (and yes she is more entertainer than artist)who don't stop are the ones who know that if they DO stop no one will be interested in their gimmick when they come back. Beyonce has catchy music and she can perform (a bit over the top at times but I guess that sells tickets) and of course we can't forget the booty, but really, enough is enough. It's too much. She is a media whore but the worst part is that she's a BORING media whore. She always comes off as bland and without a personality (I guess that's because "Sasha" has all the personality). She acts like she can't think for herself. Everything is planned by her handlers so nothing seems genuine. She is dressed up in that robot costume for BET but all seh had to do was her interview routine. That is the way to look like robot! But I think my really problem is that no one get on her. No on questions her. B can do no wrong!!

Nancy Walker Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST

Glrfc: This is about Beyonce, not Jennifer Hudson. They are two totally different women. I hope Jennifer does not try to emulate her. I believe she has more going for her than her bon bons. Some people may hate Beyonce, but I am just sick of her being all over the place. by the time she is thirty, she will be a has-been. But there is a bright side. She will have a ton of money for plastic surgery and a butt-lift.

karim Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 03:36 PM EST

JCorn Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

I too am a Beyonce fan. I have been for years. I also know every word to Writings on the Wall ... and every CD moving forward. But at times, I feel the same way. I want to miss her. I'm probably one of her biggest fans but when there's always something, I can't always be excited. Every interview - the same. So how can the next Cosmo magazine cover featuring her get me excited when I now know that it will be the same interview from Essence? She's extremely media trained - which makes her lack excitement. I love her. And her music but I truly lack anticipation. Alicia Keys - I anticipate. Jill Scott - I anticipate. Beyonce - I just expect.

I think everybody is just mad. Yes, i admitt... she needs to lay of the publicity whoring a bit, but bottom line is she is the best in her game. No one can come close thats why she is winning awards and that why everybody is obssessed! I am a huge fan and i can wait to c her in concert Aug 4th MSG!!!!!!!

doom2682 Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Why is it when one of our own gets to such a high point in their carreer. We feel the need to tear them down, i mean i am not against listening to other songstress...hey i am a huge Corrine Bailey fan. I just think if the other R&B ladies are sick of it then they should step their game up. Beyonce as well as any other artist on her level earned the right to be there.

TyreekaJames Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

"Beyonce has never been sexually explicit like that. She will talk about "making love" but does not use crude stuff like that"

PUHLEEZE!!!!!!!! She pops her cooch in damn near every video she does! And usually it's her humping JayZ's legs!

Actions speak louder than words, people. Don't make this chica out to be some angel when she isn't. She has 'flaws and all' too and if the world is weary of her, then by God they're weary.

Huh? Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

Kennedy: Take a breath or swallow a "calm pill." Madonna? She is sickening as well. One thing I can say about Beyonce, she can sing;can't say that about Madonna. Madonna has been overexposed far more than Beyonce, in a literal sense.

Brandin Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

When you think about it, Beyonce hasn't taken a break in 10 years. Ever since she debuted in Destiny's Child in 1997, this woman hasn't relaxed since. Every year Beyonce has had some sort of project, it's not that she doesn't have talent...it's that she has too much talent.

Then another thing, this woman has been working since she was a child. Beyonce doesn't know how to just "be", and that may be the reason she feels to put out more and more work. I think Beyonce should just take a break, and completely take in what she's accomplished over these years. When she returns she'll be rejuvenated and new (better) music will come naturally. Beyonce needs to build up anticipation, because since she's so overexposed, there just isn't any for her anymore.

milli Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

I can't believe people are sayin' they're tired of her but still they write paragraphs about her. Why don't you just ignore?
I guess the "hate" is too strong

Gaby Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

yeah ive been over beyonce for a while now, which makes it all the more aggrivating when she is EVERYWHERE...

kennedy Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

well..we should just put it like this..beyonce didnt make herself a star..and she's not in control of the media...media and fans make her a star...shes not in control of what we here on the radio..thats clear channels fault..i mean i like her songs and own all the albums..you dont have to hate her personally less u personally know her..but all im saying is dont be mean..they all get their chance to shine..they take a break..the have an album or two that dont sell..(mariah carey)..then they come back...i dont think beyonce is trying to take over the wworld..and doesnt know when a song is going to be a hit or not..she might not even care if it goes..number one..but she does it for her fans..if youre not a fan..no big deal..and man i hate when other musicians attack other musicians (rufus wainwright) of course her songs are formulaic..thats pop music for you..its always been that way..look at madonna ..well look at early madonna..same formula..maybe beyonce will change her sound few yrs

Zachary Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

You are absolutely right on the money. I've been so over beyonce for years now. She is in love with herself and her voice. She ruined Des Rae's Kissing you by singing the instrumental. She lip syncs a lot live (pre recording her vocal tracks) She also Recycles everything she does. The Ring the alarm dance break was the soldier dance break from the DC world tour. Not to mention that her costume and entrance were rip off's of Britney's from the 2003 AMA's. Her newest rip off is of Kylie's 2002 concert entrance at this years bet awards. http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/beyonce+kylie/video/x2e9p4_beyonce-copis-kylie-split-screen_music go see for yourself. She's a pathetic copy kat

damn Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

No one's crying. You are jealous. Period.

Fatima Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 11:57 AM EST

Kim - Um he DOES NOT say "banging B." He says "I used to bag girls like Birken bags, now I bagged B," which is totally not the same. Beyonce has never been sexually explicit like that. She will talk about "making love" but does not use crude stuff like that.

And people should not say "B'Day" was a disappointment to all fans, as I find it a million times better than her first CD. It uses a much more diverse sound different from a lot of R&B artists. Horns, Killer bass lines, etc. As much as I love him, I am glad not every song needs to sound like a Timbaland record. I never understood the hate, and at least I have EW MAGAZINE to back me up.

Kim Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

I lost respect for Bey when Jay-Z boasted he was banging her on 'Deja Vu'. He raps, "Now I'm banging B" and she answers "You hurting that".

She is nothing more but an over-sexed product who is trying to be what Jay wants her to be and live up to her parents' expectation. She needs to go away for a LONG time. She does not deserve the hype she gets.

Oh and B'Day is a hot mess. She owes Ne-Yo because his song saved her album. I know one thing, if she makes another bad album, her career is over. People forgave her this time, but we will not be as nice the next time.

Dionne Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

I thought that I was the only one who felt this way about her. I never like her first song she releases, like crazy in love, and de ja vu, whoever i do believe that she has alot of talent, however, she is not the epitome of pop music. Tired of seeing her now. She need to got sit down for a minute.

One more thing Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:58 AM EST

I am sick of Paris too. Many posters have expressed their disdain for this spoiled, empty-headed sorry excuse of a celebrity. So many people are tired of the no-talent Paris, and booty shaking Beyonce.

Nancy Walker Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

Stop crying! No one is jealous of Beyonce. No one hates her. She does the same old tired boring routines all the time. She needs to step back just a bit. There is such a thing as too much. I like peach cobbler, but can only eat so much of it. Sick of Beyonce. What is she going to fall back on when her booty sags?

Bandith Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:37 AM EST

DAN! I have exactly the same people on my boat, but my boat is a spacehip and is shot to the moon. And it is joined by Christian Slater and Jesse Metcalf.

Dan Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:28 AM EST

I have had Beyonce on my boat forever..the boat being a place I put all celebs who are beyond useless. (just for reference, she is joined by Nicholas Cage, Russell Crowe, Paris, Lindsey, Elizabeth Hasselback).

Not TO MENTION, how Beyonce is not original in here stage performances. She recently ripped off the opening of Kylie Minogue (her whole robot like rising from the stage).

jerome Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

It's a case of havingSO MUCH drive & determination to get there & now she is striving to STAY here - and she's trying too hard. Its as if she's nervous (and maybe - being that we're fickle) she SHOULD be, especially with younger ladies like Rihanna popping up (and making better hits). Beyonce NEEDS a forced BREAK - no films, events, tv, albums - theres a reason why we're anxious for a new Alicia Keys or even Shania - so superstars know how to leave us wanting more instead of shouting "No more!"

Wow, this is sad! Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

People are not tired of Paris Hilton coverage 24/7 for the last few months? Hell, the last few YEARS?

....But, you all hate on Beyonce?

Paris has NO talent. She does NOTHING.
Yet, Beyonce gets hated on? Hmmmm!

Armand Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:12 AM EST

C'mon u guys. Like every singer, Mariah, Whitney etc..they all had their popular moments and will experience a fallen moment. So far only Mariah seems to be the only 1 that managed to survive the curse. Beyonce's moment will come and if she plays her cards right ( like not releasing another album/single too soon, movies etc..) she will be alright. Or else, the same will happen to her..not a moment too soon

And also, she better watch out for new starlets around the corner..oh like, Rihana, etc..

Good luck Beyonce. Your 2nd album was a major disappointment. Really, you should go back to basics. No more the yelling and screaming your lungs out. We prefer modest and easy-listening songs.

Upgrade you, I think Downgrade U is better

It's about time people realized she is sooooo played out. She has lost the ability to come with her own stuff. She copies from other artists. Her whole BET awards performance was a direct bite from Kylie M's concert. Go away B and give us a little break.

Your a hater Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

All of you people are HATERS. If you do not like Beyonce, THEN WHY DO YOU LISTEN TOO HER MUSIC? Why do watch the shows she's on? Why do you sing her songs? She is not full of herself. Just because people like her, and she's popular, she's overexposed and she needs too "get over herself" No, i think ITS YOU too needs too get over YOURSELF. I am truly not surprised by some of these comments!

Beyonce is hot. She's on top. OF COURSE you losers are going too hate on her.

FACT: You HATE HER because you want too BE HER. Period. End of Dicussion.

? Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

Sasha:"Give credit for one thing." For all crying that people are hating Beyonce, that is not true. Some folks are just tired of her. And yes, the shaking is tired and old.

Rufus Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 09:36 AM EST

Nancy, you are exactly right. She is overexposed. This little girl has been in our faces for almost five straight years now, with no real break, and the public is getting sick of her. It is obvious that she is terrified of losing relevance or worried someone will replace her (which she was never anything defined anyway). The fact is, "B'Day" was an awful piece of garbage and a complete rip off for fans that actually bought it. Then to turn around and re release it just because it had a video to EVERY song, was pathetic at best. That was mainly to boost her sales since her numbers were way under DIL. I don't like all this copying she is doing either, not to mention trying to take sole credit for "Irreplacable" till Ne-Yo sort of blasted her for it. And why did she introduce Kelly at the BET awards? Can't any of these Destiny child girls shine on their own? Beyonce's hair flipping, booty shaking ways are completely old and tired now. She has become another hootchie like the rest of them.

Well... Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

Don't get me wrong. I loved Beyonce. I do think that she's a beautiful and talented woman. HOWEVER...recently (besides Beautiful Liar) I just get this vibe of "I'm so much better than everyone else" from her, and I'm sick of it. I'm sick of listening to her every 5 seconds on the radio. I think that she is way to overexposed, and really doese need to take a break and just chill out. And I'm sorry, but her dress at the BET awards was kind of hideous. And the fact that she came across as thinking she was all that and whatever just bothered me.

Go away for a while Beyonce. B'Day was underwhelming, and Deja Vu was one of the dumbest songs ever. Along with Ring the Alarm (was that even singing?!)

Ok, so maybe I'm being harsh but whatever. If she came out with some kick ass songs like Crazy in Love that was totally pumped with energy and had an attitude check, I'd still love her. But she needs to do some SERIOUS work on herself, music, and image.

msnett Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 09:28 AM EST

You're not hatin at all. You're just saying what most of the world is thinking..Her ego is way too big, she lacks creativity so she steals from others & has no class when it comes to interacting with with fans who put her where she is.

EW are you going to start hiring staff writers directly out of HS now?? Cause I can't get enough of stories about how much you are totally over Hannah Montana.

i am glad that I am not the only who thinks beyonce sucks now! I used to lover her and destiny's child, I respect ehr for what she has done in the [ast. But when I see her videos she just seems like an over paid dolled up video hoe. And I never respect any artist that talks about material things in every song. that is ridciulous!

jen Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 08:42 AM EST

I've been over Beyonce. Ever since Dreamgirls she been trying to prove something? She is so full of herself she is not true to game. She's a liar and a thief. She wants to keep the spotlight only on her. What she going to do when that changes?

sasha Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 08:19 AM EST

u're a hater there is nuthin wrong with beyonce, but i'll give u credit 4 one thin; she does need 2 get o'er her ego. it's way too big

Byron Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:56 AM EST

For you to be an established journalist, this blog does not make sense at all. Are you hatin on Beyonce because she is trying to sell her music and how does Beyonce need to get over herself? If you are gonna make a statement like such, at lease have valid reasons why.

lola Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 07:13 AM EST

to the questions "Am I a hater?"and "need to get over myself?" the answer is YES.
You're tired of her so you decide to write an "essay" about her. Are you serious?

Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:46 AM EST

Shroud her?

hmm Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 06:16 AM EST

EW named Beyonce the entertainer of 06, she was in your top ten for last year and you gave Irreplaceable song of the year. I think you need to read your magazine more cause you are obviously not instep with what the rest of your staff thinks. And I also agree if she was a man people would shroud her for her work ethic. You praise Justin Timberlake when his album is nothing more than a Timberland mixtape. I hope he gets a blog dedicated to him.

hmm Mon, Jul 2, 2007 at 05:48 AM EST

What a waste of blog space. You don't even have a point except that she is actually trying to sell her second album. Beyonce could def use a break however devoting an entire blog to her is ridiculous. I have yet to be exposed to Beyonce when I turn off my computer maybe you should do the same. It's sad when artist who actually deserve their fame get bashed on. I like how you quoted your counterpart for Deja Vu yet you failed to mention both B'Day and the Duluxe ed were both given GOOD grades by EW hmm. I so you definately sound like a hater. Let me guess you are biter that EW's endorsement with Rihanna didn't take off like expected. Good work the week she is in decideing to use the Concert Revune instead of records sells. She was the most nominated for the awards there and she performed. And don't question the BET Awards. Beyonce kills it every year, how about get overself and use your blog talk about folks who can't sing AT ALL. Or who are famous for NO reason at all.

Martha Sun, Jul 1, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

DaisyJ, that was my thought too...MIDDLE SCHOOL, fer pete's sake. Eek. Otherwise, add me to the "talented, but overexposed - take a nice long vacation" list.

Beverly Baldwin Sun, Jul 1, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

I think props should go to the dude dancing with Beyonce' in the Get your bodied video he was excellent he made her shine

daisyj Sun, Jul 1, 2007 at 12:47 AM EST

Over a hundred comments, and no one has said the only thing I can think of in response to this post:

You were listening to Destiny's Child in MIDDLE SCHOOL? Holy crap, I'm old.

Nancy Walker Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:54 PM EST

Over exposure is killing this booty shaker's career. Girls like her come a dime a dozen. So she is pretty, so what? Janet Jackson was a pretty face too, and look what over exposure got her: A tug on her bra by a monkey named Justin Timberlake. Beyonce needs to learn that she is more than just her body. I hope her brain works too. I would like to know what type of education she has? Did she finish high school?

blueangel17 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

It's hard for me to be over someone I was never into in the first place. I just don't see what makes her special. She's pretty and she sings okay, but so do a lot of people. Mediocre and overhyped pretty much describes it for me. I had to sit through a Beyonce: Exposed at a friend's house last weekend and it was sheer torture. It is clearly relentless self promotion.

Floridaboy8703 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

Kylie Minogue is not the first artist to ENTER ON STAGE as a robot. Its been done by lets see... Michael Jackon... The Backstreet Boys.. And everyone gets the concept from the MOVIE METROPOLIS...

Now if you want to believe that Kylie Minogue is great. Go right on ahead. I liked her one song "cant get you out of my head". However she did not and i repeat did not create enterin the stage as a ROBOT. Michael used it, Backstreetboys used it, Kylie used it, and Beyonce is the latest artist to use it. She was in a robot suit for what 11 seconds of a 5 minute performance? All Kylie did was stand inside the thing and lip synch. She is no creative genius in her own right. But im not here to tear her down cuz she is a very accomplished entertainer. But you using Beyonce using a entrance she thought was unique as grounds for her to GO AWAY is once again unfounded.

Troubledmind Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

Carl, you made me spit out my pumpkin soup (with a sprig of rosemary, thank you) onto my keyboard. Now, how am I gonna explain this to my master?

Fatima Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST

I am sorry Beyonce hasn't had breast cancer to make her more awesome.

t Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

Oh, and by the by, if Rufus no like, I no like either. Now, that boy is original. Drama queen, yes, but oh so original. He's right about the machine that spits out the music. He just didn't mention that it usually eats its children at some point.

Troubledmind Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 03:52 PM EST

O.K. FloridaBoy...it's on!!!! Listen, Ms. B posted a thought on an open forum for discussion. She has the right. Ignoring the problem (Screamyonce) does not make it go away. After watching her "performance" on the BET awards and realizing that she has COMPLETELY stolen her act from (The unstoppable, I kicked breast cancer in the butt, Kyle M.) yet another artist, I say, again, the diva needs to take a break, mature and come back and get original. It's not that she shouldn't work hard, or that she shouldn't keep herself in the spotlight, but she should do it with a little originality. That comes from growing and livin', baby. Screamyonce is overdoing it and you and me both know that if she keep it up she will either, a) have a diva breakdown ala Mariah or b) have some white boy rip her top off at the Super Bowl and have the rest of the world blame her for terrorism and North Korea's nuclear program. I'm just say, the girl is at saturation point. My cup runneth over on Beyonce juice.

nsl Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

If Beyonce would sing about something other than all the things she got and her bank account than I might like her again. Until that happens, I too am over her.

Floridaboy8703 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 03:14 PM EST

And devoting an ENTIRE post entry to an artist you are SICK of hearing, seeing, and thinking about. Is just plain dumb.

I bet you would try to put out a fire by adding more gasoline to it. And then not understanding how dumb your decision was when someone told you that it was rather dumb for you to do so.

If you are over Beyonce you should have just written it in your diary or confessed it to your dog. Becuz by making a entire post about Beyonce. You added to her, not took away.

Floridaboy8703 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

Carl you could stop watching cable? Or turn the TV?

I dont see how any of you are justifying your disdain for Beyonce. Its like me saying OH I HATE SEEING YOU AT CIRCLE K everyday (if thats where you work) I cant get mad that you work at circle K if I keep choosing to go there and buy my gas, or purchase snacks from there. I mean seriously I could just go to another store. But since thats how you make your living haha clearly your gonna stay working there. Even if I taunted you daily lol.

Can't anyone see how stupid this post was? And how dumb it is to tell a celebrity who is WORKING thier ass off. Not just being famous for being famous. To go and take a break? I really dont get it. It lacks logic.

Too Tired Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 02:22 PM EST

You are over her, yet you decide to make an entire blog post on her! The irony

Carl Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 02:17 PM EST

OK, I just LOVE it when someone who's constantly angry about an issue finds a way to inject that issue into every conversation, despite the topic (I'm looking at you, Floridaboy). I'll say it loudly for people in the cheap seats: THIS. IS. NOT. A. RACE. ISSUE. PERIOD. Nobody else thinks it is. I'm sorry, FB, but I'm black and I have a right to be sick of any overexposed celebrity I darn well please, whatever color, so B doesn't get a pass just because of skin tone, dude. Her videos are on 722 times per day. That's what makes her hard to take anymore. Heck, if my mom had videos running 722 times a day, I'd be over her. I don't know what might have set you off today, but you might a more appropriate forum to voice your social bitterness than a relatively impartial entertainment comments page. Just my 2.

aron Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 02:17 PM EST

Beyonce is just mediocre. She steals and "borrows". Her whole existence is to steal other artists ideas and looks. She is boring and needs to go away foe a while..but can't see that happening...ho hum....

dma69 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

Beyonce has talent, but her last album was so underwhelming. Deja Vu was a letdown compared to Crazy In Love, and Jennifer Hudson completely blew B out of the water. Maybe some time off would do her some good to get that mojo back.

Chris Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 01:31 PM EST

I think she is very talented (so much more than Britney, Avril, Hilary, Jessica). BUT I think she needs to take a break. It appears she doesn't know the meaning of overkill.

She needs to hold off on another cd or project for at least a year.

Vicky Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 01:11 PM EST

My sister and I have been saying this since Dreamgirls came out. We were soooo over Beyonce then and we continue to be til this day. She needs to go away for a long while!!!

JC Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

KUDOS Ms. Butler... I can SOOOOO relate. To be honest, her voice is flat, shrilly, and she was outdone by her DREAM GIRLS co-star Jennifer Hudson.

It is time for her to step back... every song is just a repeat of itself.

I am with you, move over on this band wagon Ms Butler because I want on too!

Stephen to TK Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

I think we should enjoy this Beyonce "overkill" while we can. Beyonce is young now, but in the next decade she will slow down like Madonna or Tina and we'll miss hearing about her every 10 minutes. She's a legend in the making and I think we should sit back and enjoy the ride while we can.

johnny utah Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

Beyonce (the most annoying female singer in the past 10 years ,and i have seen her live. And she is terrible.)just because u are having a sophmore slump does not mean you have to release every song on your album ( dont forget with video) as a single!

Bethonie Butler, You Are Boring Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Honey, long after people have forgotten you and your little EW blog, the world will remember Beyonce. This girl is gorgeous, talented, hard-working and a legend in the making. You? Not so much. There's nothing you or anybody else can say that can diminish what Beyonce has accomplished. And I know it kills you to know that. Oh well...

the rev. jesse jackson Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

To Floridaboy8703: even I think you're ignorant. It's not about race at all. Gimme a break, sounds like a cheap effort to defend your position with a sensitive topic, which is downright cowardly. As for those who lambast EW for "trashing" Beyonce, I would like to point out that this topic has only been addressed in one blog post, hardly a cover story. Jesus, Bethonie is simply saying she's tired of the girl, give her a break... she didn't call her the antichrist...

Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

Why should beyonce go anywhere???????????? She is at the prime of her career and young I might add. One day she will not be able to look or move the way she does now. Then maybe she'll think about retiring. How dare you all tell her to go away!!! She is a star.

Troubledmind Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

I so wasn't gonna post. But, after reading the messages, I feel obliged. O.K. it goes like this: Thank you, Miss Butler! When an artist invents a second identity, I don't care how well they sing, they have now stepped into the magical world known as MEGALOMANIA! You know your ego is out of control, like a hyper-active child at a candy convention, when you need two of you to contain it. Beyonce's voice tends to leap into that shrill place where dolphins cry. And putting our 200 videos on a budget of 10 bucks does not make you a visionary, it makes you a marketed piece of R&B insanity. She needs to reign it in a little bit. There is talent there but talent needs to grow and mature. And for anyone who is trying to make this a race issue, let me bring it: this brutha is sick, sick, sick of that chick. "Deja Vu" made me snort milk. Could she have more ironically named a song? I called the paramedics when I heard "Ring the Alarm". O.K., I'm done.

tk Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

wow - this discussion has taken on so many issues

I think Beyonce is great, she's a talented singer and great performer. She works hard and it shows. I don't really understand ALL the hate. I can say yes, she's overexposed, yes she's a bit screamy, but when she's not she's on.

I loved the B'Day album, I grooved to that from September to December non stop along with Mariah. You can't just listen to what the radio brings you cause if you do you will miss some fun party songs. My kids & I spent all of the fall dancing and singing to the song she performed to on BET (name escapes right now) we would shout it in the car and have fun with it. Which is 99% of Bey's music, fun Booty Shaking music. She is extremely hard working and actually a pretty good example for my 14 year old, she's not over slutatious and you can see the hard work she puts into her performances. We bought the re-release more out of support than any thing else - But I do love Flaws & All

Stephen to Fatima Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

Phew! I suggest you use Hillary Clinton for a powerful woman. I agree with your stance 100%. Getting back to Beyonce, I don't understand this 'lack of vocal range.' crap. Her song 'Listen' is currently my most played song on my i-pod. And if you youtube J.Hud and her Dreamgirls song, there's a lot of hate for Beyonce, saying she's not as good a singer. They have two diff. voices, and I can't recall when Beyonce said she was better. She's a class act.

Fatima Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

Ha, I'm not a giant Rachael Ray fan either. Just using her as an example of a person that gets a lock of flack for being ambitious and headstrong. A trait most admire in male business.

Stephen to Layla Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

thanks for clarifying that. I couldn't remember who wrote that line, all I know is I laughed very hard.

Stephen to Fatima Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

you had me until Rachael Ray. I admire MArtha and Oprah, but Ray to me seems a little phony. (P.S. I don't blog my dislike on those sites. I think they're vile). Plus some of her recipes are odd, and some you just have to question why we need to watch a show to learn how to cook them. (I.E. microwavable bacon, sherbert).

jason Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

i don't watch much tv and i CERTAINLY don't listen to radio (waste of time), so i don't get sick of anyone because i listen to them on my time. so i'm fine with beyonce and i actually liked b-day alot. but that's just me.

GeeMoney Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

The majority of the time I read these posts, I read a bunch of melodramatic BS. People complaining about racism, sexism, homophobia, blah, blah, blah. You people need to calm down

She is a little overrated. But I think people are sick of her goody two shoes image. She needs to like go out and cheat on Jay-Z or something. Maybe then people won't mind hearing so much about her.

KingLouieXVIII Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 11:06 AM EST

FATIMA: You're right, I don't know the majoriy of Beyonce's work. But I know that her music that is shoved down my throat by her label is enough for me. It is not necessary for somebody to hear an artist's ENTIRE musical catalogue to decide whether you like them or not. Music, like all art, is subjective. But I can honestly say that Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Erykah Baduh (sp), Heather Heathley, and Corinee Bailey Ray are all names right off the top of my head that possess far better vocals. AND I DON'T EVEN LIKE THEIR MUSIC. There is a fine line between fanaticism and delusion.

Fatima Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:44 AM EST

I don't think there is a race issue here, instead I look it as another case of people unable to deal with an ambitious, hardworking and highly successful woman. I've always been amazed at the intense hate for Martha, Rachael Ray and Oprah in the blogosphere while people are just FINALLY beginning to dislike Donald Trump. I don't like to play "cards" all the time in situations like this, but it just seems like another example of people secretly uncomfortable with a woman taking charge of her career and outselling the boys. While I don't support everything Beyonce does (I don't have blind patriotism to her), I can honestly say she is a person that I admire. I guess I should take solace in the fact that while there are so many naysayers, I will be enjoying Beyonce for many years to come, just like people do with Tina Turner.

S.O. Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:44 AM EST

She's boring and predictable. Not to mention irritating to the ears, does she have to scream everything?

Hutchy Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:34 AM EST

Did I miss something? The reason no one is writing about Gerald Levert and Fantasia in Color Purple is because the vast majority of readers on this site wouldnt read it, because they could care less. Is this a news flash? Is everyone required to care about everything going on in every corner of the entertainment world? People like what they like, no shame in that. I certainly haven't been going on any African-American blog sites to make sure they are writing about the unexpected success of "Knocked Up", because A. they wouldnt be and B. I don't care that much.

Scotty Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:33 AM EST

Though I've never particularly warmed to her in interviews, Beyonce is fierce on stage. And anyone who thinks she is limited vocally needs to get their ears checked. Yes, she tends to oversing things at times (hello Christina Aguilera), but, when put to a soft ballad her voice is phenomenal.
The singer who I am absolutely tired of though is Fergie. She was on So You Think You Can Dance last night and was terrible. And it's sad because can actually sing. But, I'd rather listen to Hilary Duff's new CD on repeat all day than another false note out of Fergie's mouth.

Fatima Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:28 AM EST

Oh and Stephen - I am not Fatima Robinson, however cool that would be. If that were true, I think Fergie might be mad at me for comments I made about London Bridge last summer.

Hutchy Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:28 AM EST

Couple of points about Beyonce, 1. Her vocal ability is average at best, she has that go-to screamy high note she uses and thats about it. 2. terrible actress 3. no apparent emotions, opinions, ideas, or any kind of life outside of dominating the world. I think she might actually be a fem-bot. 4. Kelly Rowland is hotter, and it's not even close. I've been saying that since way back when. Beyonce is undeniably REALLY pretty, in the same way Carrie Underwood is pretty, but both have the sex appeal of a brick.

Duh Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:25 AM EST

"All the other black blog sites had recaps." This isn't a black blog site. It's an all-races blog site.

Floridaboy8703 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:24 AM EST

Erykah Badu gave an amazing performance of LOVE HANGOVER to Diana Ross during her lifetime achievement award tribute. And yet hmmm CRICKETS over here at pop watch. And our beloved Bethonie had nothing to say.. BUT wow she sure did have the time to add to the Beyonce over exposure by making an entire pop watch entry about her... HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Floridaboy8703 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:23 AM EST

Well where is Bethonies recap of the BET awards. All the other black blog sites had recaps. But miss bethonie was silent about that stellar night, Which hoonored two great african american musicians GERELD LEVERT and James Brown.. BUT NOOOOO she has to get brainwashed by her bosses into hating on Beyonce for performing. James Brown performed everywhere, anywhere, all the time. Tina Turner did the same thing. It used to be that you were the "hardest working person in showbiz" but now people just equate it to you wanting over exposure. Beyonce could care less about exposure or over exposure. She has proved herself already. Anything she does now could be for her own enjoyment. GET OVER IT PEOPLE!!!!!! She has Grammy's, sold millions of records, and will go down in history as a music ICON.

Blog about something else... I hear Kelly's putting out an ALBUM Bethonie. How bout you write about that on pop watch. How bout you write about Fantasia in the color purple.

Layla Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:17 AM EST

Oh Floridaboy8703! Why would Bethonie "Go write about the situation in darfur"? She's a writer for ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY! That alone gives her the right to comment on anyone in the ENTERTAINMENT industry. If you don't like it, don't read it. And Stephen, it was Alynda Wheat who commented on Kelly Clarksons booty, not Bethonie.

roel Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

she never mattered much to me anyway; think what you want people.

Tim Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 10:03 AM EST

Beyonce gives some of the worst interviews out there. She needs to PR help.

She is a product of the music system, plain and simple.

Fatima Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:58 AM EST

I promised myself I would not get anymore worked up about this, but I REALLY can't believe that some people are saying Bee has a "limited vocal range." I really can't think of many artists out there right now who can sing better. Something tells me those who say that barely know her work. Finally, Beyonce has actually been out of the spotlight for the last couple of months, which is the first time in a year. She does one performance at an awards show and we jump down her throat. I would always think this article was unprofessional, but at least it would have made sense a few months ago. But I have to say, releasing 7 videos at once may seem like a little much to most, but as a lifelong fan, it was a pretty exciting day. All of this makes me sad.

Rachel Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:57 AM EST

Hi everyone,
I am a hugh Beyonce fan. My interest in her has grown over the years. At first I was not really into destiny child but I realized that Beyonce has star power and talent. When a person is talented and is receiving praise we, as a society, say it is because they are pushing themselves onto people and it is not deserved. Beyonce is a show stopper and no one can take that away from her. I wish Kelly and Michelle the best with their careers but Beyonce is not obligated to down play her talent and skills to make some one else shine.

Ceballos Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:47 AM EST

I love the expression "couldn't act his/her way out of a box/paper bag."

I just get a chuckle out of picturing someone actually trying to act their way out of these items...someone put this on Youtube!

KingLouieXVIII Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

OMG!!! I CANNOT BELIEVE SOME OF YOU ARE MAKING THIS A BLACK/WHITE ISSUE!! Grow up, people!
Let's get the facts straight. Beyonce maybe pretty and have a nice body, but there are woman all over the world far more attractive. She has a limited vocal range, and couldn't act her way out of a box if her life depended on it! Yes, her music is popular, but popularity is NOT synonymous of quality. There are dozens of female artists (both black and white) creating far better music. I personally don't have anything agaisnt her. To me she's always had a somewhat bland personally, and her music is mediocre. I think it's hilarious how she's trying to win over the Latin market by recording in Spanish and singing with Shakira just b/c Spanish music is one of the few musical genres that consistantly sells albums. If she loves the Latin community so much, why didn't she do this when she was with Destiny's Child or when her first solo album came out?? Whatever! Same thing goes out to J.Lo.

junior Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:44 AM EST

Forget the race card. The real story is if Beyonce was a man she a) wouldn't have to put herself out there so much (Timberfake gets press by waking up and sneezing) b) wouldn't get the constant storm of criticism she gets.

Al Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:35 AM EST

Also, I don't know what Paris Hilton or Britney Spears has to do with this article at ALL. People are sick of hearing about them even more than they're sick of hearing about Beyonce.

Who I'd really like to hear about is poor Kelly Rowland, who had to push her album to a later date so precious Beyonce could hog the spotlight some more.

denny Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:33 AM EST

Thank you, Bethonie! Beyonce definitely needs to get over herself. She is the biggest piece of product to come out of the music biz outside of the American Idol franchise. It's kind of sad, since she can be an excellent singer/performer, but she has become a victim of her own ambition. She gives me the impression that everything she says and does is calculated, and she has one of the biggest egos I have ever seen. She tries to be this really humble, nice person, but the only air I have ever gotten from her has been one of a true DIVA. And I don't mean that as a compliment. Beyonce, yes, you are talented, but, please, get over yourself and eat a piece of humble pie. Or let loose and be your real self for once. Either would do you some good.

Al Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

I think Bethonie raised a good point (one that a lot of other people have raised, too). She's not saying that she doesn't like Beyonce--she'd just appreciate her a lot more if she went away for awhile. A lot of Beyonce's videos and songs as of late have seemed tired and half-assed. Wouldn't it be better if Beyonce got out of the spotlight for a while and then came back with something original and great? She seems kind of pathetic right now, desperate to stay in the spotlight at any cost.

Frank Jr. Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

Who cares about Beyonce?

Stephen Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:27 AM EST

I don' think Bethonie is racist towards an african-american woman b/c I think she is african-american. I'm pretty sure she's the one who blogged on the idol finale that Kelly Clarkson had a "black woman booty," and it was ok for her to say it, b/c she's black and it's in their contract.

Floridaboy8703 Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:24 AM EST

When it all comes down to it. Race does indeed play a factor. White america while they claim to be fed up with their poster kids Britney, Paris, and well Lindsey. Continue praise them. And glorify their talentless, pathetic lives. EW has features of Paris running on their site now. Dont give me the RACE isnt an issue thing. YT america see's a black person on top and is trying to discredit their talent and take them off. Well NEWS FLASH EW Beyonce isnt going anywhere. Whether or not you support her or are tired of her she is still selling out ARENAS worldwide and actually giving shows instead of lip synching like the glorified MADONNA and the pathetic excuse Britney Spears... GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!! Bethanie or w/e ur name is. Go write about the situation in darfur or something more worthwhile. Oh wait your to preoccupied with trying to bring down someone happy with their state of being when clearly you and the rest of these haterz are not.

Smackers Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:17 AM EST

Beyonce was better in Destiny's Child. I think Kelly and Michelle kept her ego in check. She's not that good of an actress and her songs have gotten too "screamy" and angry for me. And, CHILL OUT FloridaBoy8703! Bethonie isn't racist. It is her job to comment about entertainers in popular culture and she doesn't like Beyonce anymore. Bethonie allowed to express her opinions, so GET OVER IT!

lilu Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:12 AM EST

I don't understand the media: Here you have a performer whose not all over town getting drunk, wearing no underwear, getting locked up, going to rehab, sleeping around or snorting coke...and you're sick of HER? In a pop culture where everyone seems to have lost their mind, I find a hard-working performer who has class and style refreshing. I must say that I WILL never tire of.

E Fri, Jun 29, 2007 at 09:10 AM EST

To everyone who thinks this is a race issue.... do you SERIOUSLY think we're not all sick of Paris, Lindsay, Britney, Ashlee, Jessica.... probably even more so. US Weekly is so sick of Paris they are doing their SECOND boycott of her, meticulously editing any mention of her out of an entire issue. Again. Not a race issue. Seriously.

I cant be mad or tired of someone who reached thier dreams and are living life to the fullest. I can't be mad at a african american female who is one of the most talked about names in hollywood who is making history everyday. Just becuz she isnt a YT (whitey) taking a break to go snort coke and party at every club on this side of the atlantic. Does not make me grow fatigue of her. She takes breaks. She just had a 2 month vacation in the side of france with her boyfriend. And its not her fault the media keeps talking about her and taking pics of her. Its not her fault that the BET awards asked her to perform. And her being the humble start that she is, aware of BET being their with her career when NON of the other networks cared. She came and performed for them. Dont question or tire of someone for showing respect to an award show very close to them. She keeps performing at the oscars cuz they KEEP asking her to come. She's not a singer, she's a screamer. A wannabe actress who is the product of the hype machine. She's pretty, but not nearly as vocally talented as her peers.

I am not suprised by this type of article at all. Its very juvenile and very immature. Beyonce is one of the most talented female artist to come out in a long time. She's an amazing vocalist who has been clasically trained, she is an amazing dancer, and seh is absolutely gorgeous. She sings 99% of her songs live when she performs. Has the stamina on stage of a TONY award winning artist. It just amazes me that people dislike or get tired of TRUE talent. If she were Madonna, Or Paris Hilton, or Ashlee Simpson, or GOD FORBID Britney Spears it would be all GOOD because well there white, and never could sing, but hey THERE WHITE so that makes it right. I can never suffer fatigue for someone with such a beautiful voice, and a desire to do all she can while she can. Life is to short, as seen with the late Aaliyah. Waiting around and taking breaks are precious time you could lose in this world. I commend Beyonce for reaching her dreams and doing all she can while she can.

Also, Bethonie, is Slezak your boss? Because if he is, he's probably looking for a reason to fire you now...
