Veronica Mars fake-nailed to death by a Pussycat Doll

May 17, 2007, 07:17 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: Television, TV Ratings

Vm_l_2 Bad news: The CW has canceled Veronica Mars. And despite widespread rumors, there's not going to be a spinoff. Star Kristen Bell (pictured, with Chris Lowell, left, and Jason Dohring) is slated to narrate this fall's new CW series, Gossip Girl. I'll admit I don't know much about VM, but I do know how committed its fans are, so I'm sure a "voice of Kevin Arnold"-like gig feels to you all like a huge slap in the face.

Let's send off this show in the only way PopWatch knows how:

One night I tuned in
Your best friend really slept with
Harry Hamlin? Huh?

Do you haiku? I think you do.

Luis Galdamez Sun, Jun 3, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

If still in denial !!! i Just watched the last three episodes on th cwtv site and i was more impressed that ever OMG !!! again first everwood over lackluster 7th Heaven and now Ronnie !!! americans are being conditioned to believe crap like the pussycat dolls as Television Shows !!! i blame the executives who are more or less idiotic... Ratings matters but you freaking sold the show to the wrong crowd Marketing Team at the CW also idiotic ....I will miss you Veronica Mars i cannot believe this ....

Nathan Wed, May 30, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

SAVE VERONICA MARS!!
Check out: http://barsformars.com

Ron Mexico Mon, May 21, 2007 at 09:40 AM EST

I never watched to begin with. But, without doing so, I can tell you that scrapping a drama for another reality show - especially one loaded with skanks - is a mistake.

You don't have to have herpes to know that you don't want it.

Michael Mon, May 21, 2007 at 09:36 AM EST

The CW cancelled one of our favorite shows Veronica Mars. Now let's cancel the CW.

I say we take things into our own hands and stop watching the CW.

Michelle Sun, May 20, 2007 at 11:06 PM EST

Love Kristen Bell, but can't watch her in a new show from the CW. I can't believe they actually decided to cancel it, what fools!!!

Ruby Sat, May 19, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Oh NOOOOs! Seriously people...crack a book or something. Everthing is going to be alright.

dap Sat, May 19, 2007 at 02:20 AM EST

You see this face? this face right here? This is my pissed off face!! First Everwood now this? what the hell?

Elizabeth Sat, May 19, 2007 at 12:09 AM EST

You were the best show
On television today
Dawn Ostroff, suck it

DS Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:41 PM EST

Can I just say that the search for the next pussycat doll is the worst thing I have ever seen on television. I can't believe veronica mars went off for all those weeks for that crappy show.

k Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

It's as if the CW had to choose between early Oprah or early Jerry Springer. It looks like (with the Pussycat Dolls) they chose Jerry. I'm done with the CW!

crisa Fri, May 18, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

I, like others, it appears, am most likely not going to watch the CW any longer. I know that, as a young female, I am part of the demographic they are trying to catch, but I just don't understand this change. The cancelling of GG was a little more understandable- it was just time for it to go: Rory wasn't a kid anymore... Lorelai isn't still "super young mom" as much... it really wasn't Gilmore GIRLS. But come on now, besides a bit laggy (but still excellent) season, VM was still fresh. VM featured one of the last (thanks to no more GG) strong, independent female role models.

And, honestly, in what kind of world does a remarkable show like Veronica Mars get cancelled, but the network is giving the green light to a second season of "Search for the next Pussycat Doll"? Disgusting. Especially for the role model reason.

JOJO Fri, May 18, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

NBC would be smart to pick up this show. They are at the bottom. At least Veronica would give them a chance.

KingLouieXVIII Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

TV's Best Show Gone
Dawn Ostroff Is A Dumb Skank
Sorry...I be mad!

Aaaaaaaaaah! Sorry, I had to do that. SHILPA, you're absolutely right. Season 3 was the weakest, but that's because the CW's constant meddling with the show reached a boiling point. Even at the beginning of Season 2 when the network forced Rob Thomas to add more minority characters (like the insepid "Jackie") even though VM was already one of the most diverse shows on television. Dawn Ostroff is an idiot for not sticking with a show that, may have been lacking viewers, but was a key element in The CW ever getting some critical recognition like The WB had at its peak (during the Buffy, Felicity, Angel, early Dawson days). I sincerely hope that the CW averages earns LESS VIEWERS THAN THE OXYGEN CHANNEL next season!!! Those motherf*#~@*^!

Kris Fri, May 18, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

I will forever find it frustrating that just because a show has a bad year, or a year that isn't as well done as previous years, or a bad ep, that the show has "jumped the shark" or should be cancelled because they've run out of creative steam. Season 4 of Buffy (first year of college mind you) wasn't so good, though it was still better than anything else on TV that year, and yet season 5 was arguable the BEST year of Buffy. One down year does not a series destroy, especially when you have evil network execs breathing down your neck all the live-long day.

VM is a well-written, creative, witty show that, while I don't alway love Veronica herself, I will miss greatly. Seriously, the quality of TV shows left on the air, on ANY network, has just dropped.

Ponigirl Fri, May 18, 2007 at 02:51 PM EST

Ostroff has no sense
Did the same to Everwood
Now to my VM

I hope this network gets exactly what it deserves...no viewers!!!

Kristi Fri, May 18, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

Great poems ya'll! I'm too sad to focus on writing a poem, so i will just join most of you in saying CW Sux and VM was my fav show of all time, right up their w/ Felicity and Jack & Jill.

michael king Fri, May 18, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

wb you suck,V.M. great show!!

Sad Fan Fri, May 18, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

Veronica Mars:
"Don't forget me - How could I?"
Now dead like Lily

Brooklyn Fri, May 18, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

I'm boycotting the CW. What are they thinking canceling such a beloved show? Veronica Mars is a wonderful show. I just can't support such clueless, brainless, ingnorant people as those who run this network!

sad Fri, May 18, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

No use in trying
To understand this madness...
V Mars, I heart you.

Nick Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Hey "F"...i stopped watching The WB for its last of respect towards "Angel" fans and you best believe im doing the same to The CW. Terrible marketing, terrible treatment...the enforcing of "mini arcs" and standalone episodes....NOT was VMars is about. Goodbye, CW...i hope you're struggle is long and arduous. You'll never be a part of this "Big Five" you oh, so desire. Way to cancel your best show.

Dorian Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

Really guys, don't leave the CW completely, watch Supernatural. I promise you'll love it. It is a completely underrated show.

riain grey Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:38 AM EST

Rory, Lorelei,
and now Veronica, too.
Guess I'll go watch House.

To F Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

"I am LAUGHING at the thought that because one show is canceled, people are writing off a whole network."

Um, no, people are saying they only watched two shows on that particular network, so now they watch none.

Orion Fri, May 18, 2007 at 11:14 AM EST

Thanks VM; great cast and great writing! You will be sorely missed. No thanks to the CW.

Daphne Fri, May 18, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

The Gossip Girl books are pure trash...poor Kristen.

Anjeliki Fri, May 18, 2007 at 10:35 AM EST

On the bright side, with VM and GG cancelled, I never have to watch the CW again.

cj Fri, May 18, 2007 at 10:11 AM EST

So sad to see it go, but there is one good show left on the CW - Supernatural!

A haiku of despair: Fri, May 18, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

Veronica Mars.
Cancelled by The CW...So
little clue, alas!

K Fri, May 18, 2007 at 10:06 AM EST

Here's whats crap about the VM cancellation. Rob Thomas & the fans were not told on a timely basis - and now the season finale won't wrap things up. If I'm left with a huge cliff hanger - I will be so mad.

stsega Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:40 AM EST

Rapid-fire wit
no mystery unsolved
VMars is my doll

Hamburger Royal Fri, May 18, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

I'm sorry to hear of the cancellation of Veronica Mars, but I think its better to end the series while we all can still agree that 40% of veronica Mars is better than 99% of anything else (case in point: name me a show that is stellar in its 6th season).

Like many other shows
VM gets cancelled much too soon
It never will grow old

mike Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:22 AM EST

I'm not ditching EW like I am CW. But, to have someone blog about Veronica Mars who rarely saw it. Also , a cover at some point would have been great. You used to do a "Best Show You're Not Watching" Cover every year. But, AI has to be front and center.
I'm just venting. There is enough blame to go around. The CW "braintrust" and the public who ignores any program that halfway intelligent. Arrested Development, Everwood, and now VM. Who cares as long as there is a glorified talent show on.

F Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:12 AM EST

I am LAUGHING at the thought that because one show is canceled, people are writing off a whole network. Shows get canceled ALL THE TIME, especially when they have horrible writings and reach their creative peak. Let's be realistic here people. Yes, the CW lost two great shows in GG and VM, but life goes on.

WTF!!! Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:10 AM EST

This is horrible! This was the only good show the CW had. Sure, the 3rd season was somewhat frustrating, but I blame the network for that. They kept the show teetering on the edge of oblivion all season long. How are the writers supposed to create a credible plot arc when they aren't sure how many episodes they have? I think CW killed this show a long time ago...Seriously, the Pussycat Dolls? Has the American public really sunk this low?

Fri, May 18, 2007 at 08:07 AM EST

Zigra- no EW because they didn't write a huge goodbye to VM? Seriously?

I loved both GG and VM shows, but creatively, they had both run out of steam. Whether you like it or not, networks do need to make money. VM just want't bringing in the ratings it needed. It happens ALL the time to lots of shows people love. And Girlmore Girls fans, like myself, should be happy that we got 7 great seasons. A lot of shows can't say that.

zigra Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:43 AM EST

Doesn't EW have a staff writer who actually watched the show to blog about its cancellation? No CW or EW for me anymore...

Jennifer Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:34 AM EST

Ok so season 3 hasn't been stellar but OMG they can't cancel it!!! That's it I am officially done watching the CW... So not fair...
Can someone suggest for Rob Thomas to pitch Veronica Mars: FBI to another network perhaps... Sigh... again so not fair...

J Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:33 AM EST

The CW is now officially the most idiotic station on TV. Why would a new network cancel its two best shows? Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars, I'll miss you.

Karen Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:21 AM EST

CW, that great new network doing it's best contributing to the Dumbing Down of America. Because obviously all our "young folks" need to see more shows about girls gossiping, and filler segments about a "plain Jane" realizing under all that intelligence she has "glamour model" looks. Wow, she's all set now, thank you so much CW. I've finally realized I don't need a brain at all, as long as I look "Hot". Unbelievable. Any other network with half an ounce of sense should pick up this amazingly smart show and since Everwood's demise and now that Gilmour Girls has been cancelled too there's really no other reason for me to be watching CW again.

Willy Fri, May 18, 2007 at 07:09 AM EST

The CW is now dead to me. First Gilmour Girls, & now this. I hope you're happy..

Bria Fri, May 18, 2007 at 06:50 AM EST

Bye, bye CW, you just lost this viewer!

Natalie Fri, May 18, 2007 at 05:38 AM EST

I am distraught. I can't believe they would keep One Tree Hill over Veronica??!! Total madness...best make the most of Season 3 airing on Trouble in the UK i guess. CW--I will always HATE you.

Q-A Fri, May 18, 2007 at 04:06 AM EST

This is just the worst news of the year...

Jackie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 10:24 PM EST

This network is dumb
Veronica is the best
Now my life's a bore....

Ron Mexico Thu, May 17, 2007 at 10:21 PM EST

So PCD has their own show, huh? Great! More reality television glamorizing disgusting skanks. Way to go, everyone! I think the whole country needs one big collective shot of penicillin. I'm going to go throw up now.

Chaddogg Thu, May 17, 2007 at 10:03 PM EST

Now that she is off
That dumb network, Kristen can
Be a Grey's Intern.

Sara Thu, May 17, 2007 at 09:59 PM EST

Dorian Thu, May 17, 2007 at 09:50 PM EST

She is smarter than I am
Logan is so cute

Jenny Thu, May 17, 2007 at 09:45 PM EST

My husband said the CW network is coming to a nearby town this weekend to cast their reality show about marrying a farmer or something like that. Would love to show up their with "You should have saved Veronica" signs.

Anthony Thu, May 17, 2007 at 09:11 PM EST

In the CW/UPN's defense, they did pair it with Top Model last year. It still got bad ratings. I love the show, but people just did not watch it. It got three years on CW, where it would have been pulled after 5 episodes on CBS.

Jenny Thu, May 17, 2007 at 09:01 PM EST

Curse you CW.Shame on you CW!!!!

Maggs Thu, May 17, 2007 at 08:44 PM EST

Thank you CW for taking 2 great shows off the air and loosing me as a viewer. As riveting and complex as Pussycat dolls is, i think im gonna skip it!

aramis Thu, May 17, 2007 at 08:06 PM EST

Brian, thanks. I've vented on yet another hilarious blog entry:
http://aramisx.livejournal.com
take a peek.

Veronica Mars, we hardly watched ye... Thu, May 17, 2007 at 08:05 PM EST

Okay, how's this?

Kristen Bell - so hot!
But the CW thought not, so...
Ostroff has no clue.

eric murphy Thu, May 17, 2007 at 08:01 PM EST

Boo! If they really wanted to give this show a chance, they would've paired it off with Top Model.

brian Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:53 PM EST

ARAMIS! you're hilarious! and I so agree!

Ariella Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

I can't believe EW never put this wonderful show on it's cover (but F***in' American Idol gets a cover a month it seems. Like they need the publicity. Come on EW!!) or truly gave it all the support it deserved after the first season (although the unparallelled brilliance of the first season makes it VM's best, the second and third were also completely amazing and not to be missed!). Watch out Friday Night Lights, EW may seem like your pimp now, but it's a fickle friend.

Jenny Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

Losing both VM and GG sucks. The CW wasn't worthy of either show, though and I'm glad I won't have to watch the most annoying network on TV now. Those Cover Girl ads between commercials the other night were maddening!

BJohnson Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:29 PM EST

I never watched it but heard from Stephen King's articles he loved the show.
You mean the CW cancelled a show SK enjoyed?? I smell a new novel where an insane person kidnaps the head of the CW and make them write a new VM season...oh crap wait he's already done Misery. Darn he's ahead of himself.

Jay Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:20 PM EST

Ok so no Gilmore Girls AND no Veronica Mars. What am I supposed to do on Tuesday's now? Hey, but we still got One Tree Hill!!!! (Yes, that was sarcasm)

Shilpa Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:19 PM EST

i'm not in disbelief that veronica mars was cancelled. unfortunately, the show itself lost its character; not is brilliant writing or fantastic acting, but it lost its essence. the first season defied all generic tv and unfortunately, that passion and dedication can't be replicated season after season. that being said, even on its worst day, vmars soared above 99% of all other television programs. mostly, i will miss the actor's interpretations of the writer's brilliant dialogue combined wholly with the unheradled direction and production of the show. overall, television is losing so much of its creativity and originiality in cancelling a show that truly pushed the envelope. what does it say about our demographic that we renew a show about finding the next PUSSYCAT DOLL and these incredibly talented actors must abandon a program of such quality. though vmars only averaged about 3 million, 3 million people, all individuals, will begin the 2007 season much more empty than before.

aramis Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

First Gilmore, and now Veronica? DAMMIT CW! WTF?! You lure me into your subpar network (i) with the only two shows that were ever good on the WB and UPN (don't) just so you could cancel those much beloved shows (think) see if I would follow you into your even crappier programming (so!)? I'll repeat: I DON'T THINK SO. I wash my hands of the CW!

mjade27 Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

I'd like to blame Dawn O. and the CW, but the fact that most of this country would rather watch crap like the Pussycat Dolls can't be ignored. There do not seem to be enough intelligent people left to sustain a quality program like VM. I fear for our future based on the lack of taste and brain cells of the general viewing public.

Brainiac Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

Too bad. I haven't followed the show very closely, and I've only seen a few episodes here and there. Naturally, due to the nature of the show, I was a bit confused and didn't understand the long, on-going mysteries. However, I enjoyed what little I did see. Too bad - it looked like a really good and smart show.

But what do you expect from the network that cancelled Reba? That was an even stranger decision because, despite the awful promotion and time slot, it was STILL one of the network's top five shows. Grrrrr......

tamuchi Thu, May 17, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

VM was the only reason I ever watched CW. I know I'll get nailed for this, but the way most of this season went especially the last half), the cancellation may be for the best. What they did to Logan was just plain criminal. Put S1 on repeat and add a splash of S2 every so often. And don't forget to watch Friday Night Lights.

Ellipsian Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

Who wants to join my
Ostroff boycott? Miss Mars, you'll
Always have Backup

leia Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:58 PM EST

Well, VM got crappy towards the end when it split up Ver and Logan and brought in Piz. unless they reunite in the finale! pleasepleaseplease let it be.

thecwisdead Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:50 PM EST

and dawn is the holedigger and the crap she likes is the soil

bj Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:49 PM EST

Dawn Dawn dawn. How could you how could you. Im a male in his 30's I have all of the VM's from the beggin TIVO'd. And then you do this kill it for the pussycat dolls. Dont wish your network was better than trash doncha

mike Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:45 PM EST

No hiaku here, Annie. The cw cancelled one of the smartest shows around. They promoted the show badly, when did at all. And pre-empted it with the pussycat dolls(?).
Last year, they cancelled Everwood, forced out the creators of Gilmore Girls and now this.
Their schedule for next year is reality and soaps for 12-year old girls. Enjoy kids.

Melanie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:42 PM EST

So my first line wasn't 5 syllables...

Dawn Ostroff tells lies
Quality does not matter
Skanks and hos for all!

whol Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:42 PM EST

So...how long before we can say goodbye to the CW network?

Sven Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

Veronica Mars
Gone but not soon forgotten
Thanks for naught CW

Benjh Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:37 PM EST

This is the worst new ever. This show was amazing.
The CW has nothing left for smart people to watch...

Steve Arzberger Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:27 PM EST

The CW is DEAD.TO.ME. And, Kristen Bell doing voice-overs is like drinking a flat cola - just a taste, with none of the fizz.

Melanie Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:26 PM EST

Dawn Ostroff lies
Quality does not matter
Skanks and hos for all

I'm referring to this excerpt from an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on April 4:
THR: What will help you make your final decision about your schedule next year?
Ostroff: I think it's going to be all about the quality of the shows and believing in the series.

jess Thu, May 17, 2007 at 06:22 PM EST

sob sob sob. Greatest show ever.
