The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 18)

May 31, 2007, 12:26 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Music, PopWatch Confessional

Bruce_l When you hear John Mellencamp's "Hurts So Good" twice on the car radio — in a span of 15 minutes — you know it's summer. And if you're like me, someone who's spent the last 10 years on public transportation, here's what you're thinking: Damn, that sounds so good in here that I might actually be brave enough to take that road trip I've been talking about (for years now) if I had a playlist of songs just like it. So, PopWatchers, since these Village Voice suggestions didn't do it for me, I turn to you. What tracks will get me on the road? Here are a few already wooing me:

• Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road": The perfect song to coax me out onto a four-lane highway. (Worked for Bruce, seen here in 1975, at about the time he recorded this song.) I would have taken this trip a long time ago, Boss, if two lanes really could take us anywhere.
• Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "American Girl": I'll just try to block out that line about "if she had to die...."
• Shooter Jennings' "4th of July": Followed by George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today," naturally.

• Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere": It will have to be the live Dance version, so it has the heavy drum after "Oh I...(BUMP BUMP) I...(BUMP BUMP)."
• Rod Stewart's "Some Guys Have All the Luck": So I can be sad that I'm alone on the trip, but not too sad.
• Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero": Perhaps it's best that I'm traveling solo. No one needs to hear me do those background vocals. It'll also be good for when I'm falling asleep at the wheel. Has there ever been a bigger explosion of sound?
• Steve Earle's "Guitar Town": Maybe I'll find a good rockin' daddy down from Tennessee.
• Hanson's "MMMBop": If you can't listen to this song in the summer, people, when can you listen to it? (New album out July 24!)
• Melanie C's "I Turn to You": I can't believe I like a song with the line "I turn to you/Like a flower leaning toward the sun" in it. Also, is this the only song that's ever used the word anxiety?
• Aerosmith's "Cryin'": I'd take Kelly Clarkson's version, too.
• George Strait's "Carrying Your Love With Me": I know he sings about going from West Virginia to Tennessee, but I don't think life would get any better than listening to this from Montana to Wyoming.

Your turn.

Black Crowes - Remedy

Actually anything by the Black Crowes is roadtrip-worthy.

Haha! Wow. Sat, Jun 2, 2007 at 12:35 AM EST

LMF-How ridiculously literal. Couldn't you have been more creative in your song choices? (That was a rhetorical question, no need to answer.) What if you were to take a trip to North Dakota, what would you do then? Sit in silence all the way there? Or maybe put the North Dakota State Hymn on repeat in your cd player/ipod?

FLIPPER Fri, Jun 1, 2007 at 10:47 PM EST

I forgot one.
Sgt. Pepper.
Then more Neil Young.

When taking the 3 hour drive to Madison to visit my sister Def Leppard's The Vault and Bob Marley's Legend were usually along for the ride.

AJ Fri, Jun 1, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

How about Footloose. It reminds me of Romey and Michelle's High School Reunion! Anything Tom Petty or Johnny Cash.

Golden Earring " Radar Love. This might be the best song to drive to at night.

wildecat Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:26 PM EST

Can't believe no one's mentioned Santana's "Smooth" yet - that opening guitar riff just screams "roll down those windows and let's get cruising" to me. David Lee Roth's scream at the beginning of "Jump" has the same effect on me. For the way back, I'll choose "Take Me Home" by Phil Collins. I have sweet memories of driving home with my college crush one year when that one came on the radio....

ep "Shameless plug" Sato Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

Mind you, this is played out of a 300 Watt scooter stereo, courtesy of Buzz Scooter Stereo (on a green Vespa):
Mungo Jerry's in the summertime, or Shaggy's mix. generous amounts of Bra by Cymande, Bad N Ruin by Faces, Mr. Brown by Bob Marley, some old school "memories can't wait" with Living Colour, and some Pharoah Monche's "simon sez" followed by that catchy azzed song by the Gymclass heroes to get the younger kids to think a scooter's maybe kind of cool.

Never hurts to add Willie Colon. Man, horns sound great in the city when the amp is turned to 11.

PS, anyone in DC, come to the scooter rally! They are raffling off one of my stereos!

Aww yeah, giving out stereos like Nino Brown yall.

E Thu, May 31, 2007 at 07:55 PM EST

And the rest of my picks since Typepad is trying to not let me post.
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black album
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory album
Prodigy - Smack My B**** Up - when you need to wake up, there isn't a better song.
Eagles - Hotel California
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade album
The Garden State Soundtrack

E Thu, May 31, 2007 at 07:54 PM EST

Here are my picks:

Johny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, Hurt, & A Boy Named Sue
The Doors Roadhouse Blues & LA Woman
AC/DC Highway to Hell
Nine Inch Nails - pretty much the entire catlogue

Broadway Baby Thu, May 31, 2007 at 07:29 PM EST

Oh and since you will be traveling solo - Solitary Man by Neil Diamond (or the Chris Isaak cover to get a little surf vibe going) - to help you feel a little self-rightous. Happy trails!

Broadway Baby Thu, May 31, 2007 at 07:26 PM EST

For the summer of 2007 you gotta keep it a little current don't you? Go with 'Everybody Loves' by Constantine Maroulis because every summer anthem needs some Nah Nah Nah Nahs while the windows are down with the 360 degree air on and 'Wish Upon a Dog Star' by Satellite Party because obviously you need to get your groove on.

aliya Thu, May 31, 2007 at 06:51 PM EST

America - "Ventura Highway"
Stone Temple Pilots - "Interstate Love Song"
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Breaking the Girl"
The Pretenders - "Brass in Pocket" and/or "Talk of the Town"
REM - "So, Central Rain"
Rilo Kiley - "Hail to Whatever You Found in the Sunlight that Surrounds You"
Sloan - "Everything You've Done Wrong"
Indigo Girls - especially "Closer to Fine", but almost anything
Bright Eyes - all of Cassadaga
Barenaked Ladies - anything, really, but especially Rock Spectacle
Justin Timberlake (....just for the beats, I swear)
and ITA with whoever said Rufus Wainwright's "California"

Lynn Thu, May 31, 2007 at 06:36 PM EST

When I am on a road trip, I usually start and end the trip with the Top Gun theme song. Classic, inspirational and perfect for beginning a long road trip.

steve Thu, May 31, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

Two very different songs: "Radar Love", by Gold Earring; "Endless Summer Nights" by Richard Marx. Something about Marx's song when the sun is going down, probably works better if you're driving by the ocean.

Tino Thu, May 31, 2007 at 06:20 PM EST

You're on the right track with Bruce. Can't beat the Boss. I'd also throw in "Keep the Car Running" by The Arcade Fire, "Wolf Like Me" bu TV on the Radio and "Fans" by Kings of Leon.

Brie Thu, May 31, 2007 at 06:12 PM EST

Anything that's got a peppy beat and easy to sing along to. My personal driving favorites-

Free Fallin'- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Freedom 90- George Michael
Brown Eyed Girl- Van Morrison
Superstition- Stevie Wonder (bonus points if you are wearing sunglasses and sway your head back and forth)
Build Me Up Buttercup- The Foundations
Little Less Conversation- Elvis
Rubberband Man- The Spinners
You Give Love a Bad Name- Bon Jovi
Twist and Shout- The Beatles
Ain't No Mountain High Enough- Tami Terrel and Marvin Gaye
Summer in a Sandbox- which is a song by my favorite local band, Domestic Problems. Actually their entire album "Play" is an excellent choice on a road trip.

ks328 Thu, May 31, 2007 at 05:47 PM EST

You have to be unable to not sing along like Tony Hale in the Mr. Roboto commercial. So "The Puppy Song" by Harry Nillson and "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers will do you for starters...

Annie Thu, May 31, 2007 at 05:33 PM EST

A good soundtrack to listen to while driving is the Varsity Blue soundtrack--especially "Nice Guys Finish Last" by Greenday. Driving home to Michigan from Florida, that song made me get my friend's Chevy Lumina topping out at 100 somewhere in Ohio.

Jessica Thu, May 31, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

Just a few of my faves for the summer:
LA Woman by The Doors
Big Balls by AC/DC
Summer of '69 by Bryan Adams
Turn Me Loose by Loverboy
Crazy Train by Ozzy
Senorita by Justin Timberlake
Summer Love by Justin Timberlake
Eternal Flame by The Bangles
Makes Me Wonder by Maroon 5
Rehab by Amy Winehouse
Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Seperate Ways by Journey
Don't Stop Believin' by Journey
The Stroke by Billy Squier
Crush by Jennifer Page
The Way by Fastball
Boys(Remix) by Britney Spears & Pharell
My Sharona by The Knack
Mr. Brightside by The Killers
Sugar Water by Cibo Matto

and so many more.

jenjen Thu, May 31, 2007 at 05:06 PM EST

I put in my Chicago's Greatest Hits CD last week and my seven year old son informed me that it was dork music! :(

jenjen Thu, May 31, 2007 at 05:03 PM EST

Two of my favorites which are guaranteed to tick off my husband are my Stevie Nicks collection and Depeche Modes Violator.

Heather Thu, May 31, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

I have recently been partaking in several trips back and forth from IL to IA and I will tell you that "Sam's Town" by The Killers really helps the ride. There is just something so freeing about that album driving down a 2-lane highway and practically singing/yelling at the top of your voice about subtle kisses, restless hearts, loaded guns, and a southern drawl. After all, I don't mind if you don't mind...(Read my Mind which is my favorite song of this year so far)

FLIPPER Thu, May 31, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

Neil Young.
Spirit in the Sky.
Greatest Song in the World.
Some more Neil.

rosie rose Thu, May 31, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

Weezer's Blue album and any and all Ramones' albums. They used to help me survive bimonthly trips from Cincinnati to Chicago. Good luck and have fun!

Jen Thu, May 31, 2007 at 04:07 PM EST

I can't believe no one has said "The Road" by Tenacious D!

I also suggest King of the Road by Roger Miller and Love Train by Big & Rich

Brad Thu, May 31, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

Off the top of my head...

REM - "It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"
The GoGo's - "Vacation"
The Police - "King of Pain"
Jesus & Mary Chain - "Head On"
New Order - "True Faith"
Green Day - "Going to Pasalacqua"
Smashing Pumpkins - "1976"
Oasis - "Wonderwall"
The Roots - "The Seed 2.0"

Lisa Thu, May 31, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

"Life is a Highway" by Tom Cochrane. My head is bobbing as I type!

Tim Thu, May 31, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

The Eagles' Take it Easy. Runnin' down the road, trying to loosen my load!!

And the Boss's Born to Run!!!!!!! Crank it up and go about 85 mph!!!

marebare Thu, May 31, 2007 at 03:37 PM EST

Jimmy Buffets greatest hits... just sing along!!!

Stef Thu, May 31, 2007 at 03:20 PM EST

Counting Crows - "Hangin' Around." It's best turned up really really loud with the windows down!

Tim Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:58 PM EST

My two favorite road trips songs have to be "Everyday is A Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow and "Ready to Go" by Republica. And well we're on the topic, my all time favorite road-tripping album has to be The Immaculate Collection. Even though it inexpicably forgoes two of my favorite Madonna songs from this period ("True Blue" and "Dress You Up" in case you were wondering), there's something so fantastic about this album's peppy, frothy goodness.

Nancy Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:52 PM EST

Some great choices here. Here are my CD choices - I like to put the CD in and play the whole thing.

Dixie Chicks' most recent
Tom Petty (Wildflowers)
U2 (All That You Can't Leave Behind)
Indigo Girls Live Album (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, indeed!)
Couple of semi-local artists that should be huge but aren't:
Sonia Dada (A Day At The Beach)
Jennie DeVoe (Ta Da)

dre Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

first of all, Kristen, your list rocks! I would love to have a mix cd with that track list. Second, everyone is overlooking Reggae songs! How can a summer list not include music that was written to be enjoyed in the sun with/without sensimilia?

Patrick Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

For my road trip:

1. "Flashdance...What A Feeling" by Irene Cara. It was the first song I heard after (barely) passing my driver's test and getting my license, and it still revs me up.

2. "Stone In Love" by Journey - Go Steve Perry!

3. "South Side" by Moby & Gwen Stefani - Cruising, baby!

4. "Heading Out To The Highway" by Judas Priest - I'm going to do it my way, take a chance before I fall.

5. "Bat Out of Hell" by Meat Loaf - By now, I'm going full throttle.

6. "Main Theme From Superman" by John Williams - Because you will believe a man can fly. And after screaming along to the last two songs, my voice needs a rest.

7. "Summer Nights" from Grease. Not just the best summer song, but the best song ever recorded. Period.

8. "Don't Let Him Go" by REO Speedwagon - Air guitar in the car!

9. "Sausalito Summernight" by Diesel - A great road trip song and my current obsession.

10. "Cool Change" by the Little River Band - To wind down a little before I arrive.

AA Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:47 PM EST

I don't know why, but my three hour road trips to the lake have to include:
The Communards
Depeche Mode 101, and
The Cure - Staring at the Sea

AJ MacReady Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:42 PM EST

I'd have to say -
"Cabo Wabo" Van Halen
"Thunderstruck" AC/DC
"Gigantic" Pixies
"Dreamline" Rush
"The Middle" Jimmy Eat World
"Glad Girls" Guided By Voices
"Hotel Illness" The Black Crowes
"Good" Better Than Ezra
"Gee Angel" Sugar
"Let's Go Crazy" Prince
"Rearviewmirror" Pearl Jam
"Run To You" Bryan Adams
"Baba O'Reilly" The Who
"The Impression I Get" Mighty Mighty Bosstones
"Let's Go" The Cars
"Change Of Heart" Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
"Tangerine" Big Head Todd and The Monsters
"Cannonball" The Breeders

Just a few tunes from my mighty road mix CDs.

westman Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

love many of the songs mentioned, but come on people for cool top down driving you must have Lagrange by ZZ Top...the ultimate watch it or you'll get a ticket song

Lesley Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

I took a road trip from Southern California to North Carolina by myself and this was the mixed CD that I created:

1. Gypsy- Fleetwood Mac
2. Take it easy- The Eagles
3. You can sleep while I drive- Melissa Ethridge
4. Ramblin' On- Led Zeppelin
4. Wrong side of Memphis- Trisha Yearwood
5. Walking in Memphis- Mark Cohn
6. Coal miner's daughter- Loretta Lynn (I drove past her house, so it had to be there)
7. Mississippi- Sheryl Crow
8. Why Georgia- John Mayer
9. Don't go back to Rockville- REM
10. Ol' 55- Tom Waits
11. LA song- Beth Hart
12. Long time gone- Dixie Chicks
13. San Diego Serenade- Tom Waits

K Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

Vertigo – U2
Senorita – Justin Timberlake
Scar Tissue AND Under the Bridge – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jesse’s Girl – Rick Springfield
Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
Bad Habit – The Offspring

And a little CanCon:
I Mother Earth – Used to Be Alright (And then you long for the days/trippin' down the long road/just reading the signs that show you the way…)

Paige Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

Totally agree with Tom Cochrane's "Life is a Highway" and Bryan Adams' "Summer of 69." Also need to have Eve 6's "Open Road Song."

KateDFW Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

Anything by AC/DC will pretty much get me a ticket. But when you hear Highway to Hell...open the sunroof, turn up the radio and light a cigarette and PUNCH IT!

RLS Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

Too many to list, but inexplicably on a road trip ...Backstreet Boys - I want it that way

Thu, May 31, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Steal My Sunshine by Len

Ceballos Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:53 PM EST

Not to be nitpicky, but why exactly is this a "confessional"?

Anyway, I'm with K on "Invisible Touch". I was shopping for clothes this past weekend and got WAY too excited when it came on. What can I say, I'm a Phil Collins mark.

A.S.K. Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:48 PM EST

In 1989, my parents moved 4 kids, 2 cars and 2 dogs from Wash D.C. to Anchorage, AK. We forgot to pack music. We had four cassette tapes including Best of Don McLean. NOTHING says road trip like "American Pie" and the B-52s "Love Shack"

K Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

I have to have these on a road trip:

"Cruel Summer" - Bananarama
"Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Forty Hour Week (for a livin')" - Alabama
"California Girls" - Beach Boys
"Don't Worry Be Happy" - Bobby McFerrin
"You Give Love a Bad Name" - Bon Jovi
"The Distance" - Cake
"Ants Go Marching" - Dave Matthews Band
"Invisible Touch" - Genesis

Rahul Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

So many Depeche Mode songs have a 'driving beat': Personal Jesus, Behind the Wheel, Route 66 (cover); that I'd go with just about any of them.

Lee Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:25 PM EST

I love "I Drove All Night" by Cyndi Lauper and "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley. I remember when I was younger I had no idea what a Dead Head sticker was.

Scott D Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

My favorite road song: "Mercury Blues" by David Lindley and El Rayo X. Like all good road songs, there's a spot about two-thirds of the way through the song when Lindley's guitar solo kicks into another gear, creating a sense of transcendence not unlike the feeling one gets cresting a small hill on a winding two-lane state highway at maximum speed. Lindley's high-pitched vocal even sounds like the wind whistling through the open driver's side window. And the song's about a car!

HatchetFace Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

Fastball - "The Way".

Essential!

Stacey Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

Both the Top Gun and Footloose soundtracks make my speedometer inch up to the triple digits. Good thing that "Take My Breath Away" and "Almost Paradise" are in there to slow me down; otherwise I'd be looking at some serious speeding tickets.

sarah Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

"summer of '69" bryan adams!!

Big Flame Daddy Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

"Friend of the Devil"? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

fredric Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

I can't listen to "American Girl" without thinking of Silence of the Lambs. I'd definitely not want to be reminded of that on a road trip.

Dee Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

I reccomend these albums:
Matt Wertz's "Twenty Three Places" & his new release "Everything In Between"-perfect folksy poppy, definitely summery music that seems to be made especially for road trips!
The "Reality Bites" soundtrack-all tracks, except for Ethan Hawke's song (blech)

Jenny Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

Shotgun in my Soul by Cowboy Mouth is a necessity. It's a great tune for rolling down the windows and singing along. And it's always nice to pretend that you are the "little honeybee" to which the song goes out.

meg Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

Hello! "Don't stop, Believin'!! Hold on to that feeelinnnn'" There is a severe lack of Journey on these lists, it's the best stay awake music ever!

Swerds Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

I love to drive to some of the disco music that has stood the test of time.

kts Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

Right off the top of my head, Boston's "More Than A Feeling".

KingLouieXVIII Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

My mix-tapes always have to be ecclectic.

Julieta Venegas - "Me voy" (very appropriate song to begin your roadtrip)
The Smiths - "There is a light that never goes out"
Remy Zero - "Belong"
Mikel Erentxun - "A un minuto de ti"
The Cure - "Just like heaven"
Duncan Dhu - "En algun lugar"
Thalia - "Arrasando"
Pete Yorn - "Bandstand in the sky"

Neil Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

I find that playing the Avalanches' "Since I Left You" from beginning to end gets you from one place to the next very quickly.

Also, "Think Twice" by Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren Band. (They are good.)

Ryan Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

A Girl Like You -Edwyn Collins
Song 2 -Blur
Supermassive Black Hole -Muse
Road Trippin' -RHCP (just because)
Hella Good -No Doubt
Ray of Light -Madonna
Safety Dance -Men Without Hats

Sarah Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

Totally agree with the "Radar Love" suggestion!

Auriana Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

We just got back from a 14 hour roadtrip. Probably my current favorites for driving are the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks (well, the first and the third). Great driving music. I also enjoy Delerium and Enigma in the car. As for single songs..."Take On Me" by Ah Ha. Fun to sing along to.

Kristen Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

Freedy Johnston "Bad Reputation"
Martha Wainwright "When the Day is Short"
Wilco "I'm the Man Who Loves You"
Rufus Wainwright "California"
Radiohead "Planet Telex"
Devotchka "Til the End of Time"
Broken Social Scene "7/4 (Shoreline)"
Arcade Fire "Antichrist Television Blues"
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah "Heavy Metal"
Sufjan Stevens "Chicago"
The Strokes "Someday"
Rilo Kiley "Paint's Peeling"
Andrew Bird "Fake Palindromes"
Brendan Benson "Cold Hands (Warm Heart)"
Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Maps"
Spiritualized "Any Way You Want Me"
Aimee Mann "Ghost World"
The Jesus and Mary Chain "Far Gone and Out"
Beck "Devils Haircut"
Ivy "Edge of the Ocean"
Nick Drake "Pink Moon"
The Decemberists "July, July!"

Anjeliki Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:27 PM EST

Life in the Fast Lane by the Eagles.

And for some reason, I love to listen to AC/DC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap album on road trips, especially Big Balls (over and over and over).

alison Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

any of Bob Seger's greatest hits...

Sarah Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

"You Belong To My Heart" - Old 97's
"New Year's Day" - Charlie Robison (really!)
"Big Blue Sea" - Bob Schneider

Pretty much stick with Texas artists, we have a long summer down here... :)

Bexter Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

Obvious Child - Paul Simon

What about "Midnight Rider" by the Allman Brothers Band? The live version on "At Fillmore East" is a great driving song.

Indigo Girls' Rites of Passage album is the best road-trip CD. My husband and I always have to have that in the car on a long trip, and we sing along (in two-part harmony, of course) to every word. (And thanks for the Hanson album plug, Mandi - I'm liking you more and more each day!)

A road trip to the beach requires a Motown soundtrack. I don't know when I formed this association, but I am physically unable to drive to the beach without Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, and Aretha.

When summer hits, I always reach for my Beastie Boys License to Ill and Ill Communication CDs to put in my car. They make a great driving soundtrack.

3. The Clash - London Calling
4. The Band - Music from Big Pink
5. Radiohead - OK Computer
6. Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
7. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois/Seven Swans
8. U2 - Unforgettable Fire

(furry_tom, Modern Lovers are amazing!)

When I did a 14-hour drive from Maryland to Mississippi (Navy's choice, not mine), this was my Mississippi Bound Playlist:
-"Mississippi" by Sheryl Crow
-"Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day
-"Shadowboxer" by Fiona Apple
-"Move Along" by All American Rejects
-"In the Waiting Line" by Zero 7
-"Now Comes the Night" by Rob Thomas
-"Till We Run Out of Road" by Jewel
-"Cruz" by Xtina
-"New World Bound" by Jake Kirk
-"The Beginning is the End is the Beginning" by Smashing Pumpkins
-"Save Me" by Aimee Mann
-"World on Fire" by Sarah Mclachlan
-"Travelin' Thru" by Dolly Parton
-"Gone" by Madonna
-"Fly Like a Bird" by Mariah
-"Mississippi" by The Dixie Chicks
Needless to say, my song selections refelect my disdain for having been assigned to Mississippi. But it's not so bad now. Well, I'm trying to make lemonade, and whatnot.

"Roadrunner" by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers.

I don't know why but everytime I hear "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears for Fears I think of a roadtrip...

Radar Love is a must. But be careful, by the time the lyrics kick in you will probably be going 95 MPH

Where the streets have no name by U2. especially if you are driving in the desert

Ron Mexico Thu, May 31, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

"All Fired Up" by Fastway. That song will help you complete your road trip in half the time guaranteed.

Katie G Thu, May 31, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

you can't have a road trip without tom cochrane's 'life is a highway'!

"Paradise By The Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf! My friend and I love to sing it in the car! And if you want a whole album that's good for a roadtrip, we always love the "Dazed and Confused" soundtrack.
