'Spider Man 3': Even more ridiculously huge than we thought this morning

May 7, 2007, 06:16 PM | by Joshua Rich

Categories: Spider-Man 3

Honestly, our spidey sense saw this coming a mile away: Sony just released the final first-weekend figures for Spider-Man 3, and they're even bigger than the initial estimates. The movie actually opened with $151.1 million. Yep. That's $15.5 mil better than the previous best opener, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and three million smackers more than the studio had originally calculated for Spidey 3. As one high-ranking EW staffer who shall remain nameless just e-mailed me: "As if $148 mil wasn’t impressive enough. Holy s---." Holy s---, indeed, PopWatchers. Holy s---.

ONE OF THE WORST MOViES THiS FALL. i ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE FiRST AND SECOND BUT THiS ONE, i CANT EVEN FATHOM WHAT THEY WERE DOiNG WiTH THE JAZZ SCENE. i LOVE VENOM, HE'S AMAZiNG. BUT THREE BAD GUYS? AND iT ALMOST BEiNG 3 HOURS LONG, NOT WORTH MY TiME. i DONT FEEL LiKE iT HAD A POiNT! THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE iT COMPLETELY ABOUT VENOM, NOT HiS REVENGE, OR THAT OTHER DUDES REVENGE, AND VENOM. THE PLOT WAS WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY TO CLUTTERED.

To be honest, I haven't really been following the Spider-Man movies that closely. I saw bits and pieces of the first two on DVD because my father rented them, but wasn't that thrilled. That doesn't mean they're bad movies, just not my taste. Same deal with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I am really looking forward to Shrek's 3rd installment, Harry Potter, and The Simpsons movie!

ben is an idiot!!! i loved the movie too but ben's comment borders on retarded. i'm glad the movie did well but that box office record will be broken by potc: awe & even perhaps by hpootp.

Ben- just because someone did not like a movie does not mean they are trying to sound intelligent. They just didn't like the movie! A pretty ridiculous comment.

I was underwhelmed by this Spider Man, but felt it was one of the better "part III's" to come out in a while. The scenes with Bruce Campbell were knee slappers, and we know the Lizard is coming in one of the next few flicks. Peter's suddent ability to flirt with his two other best known comic love interests was cool, as was Thomas Hayden Church's portrayal of the sandman. I would love to have seen more of the sandman.

I'm with those who believe there will be a part 4. Personally, I'd love to see Sandman return and an intro to either the Lizard or the Black cat.

I loved it, my sons loved it, and anybody who didn't is just trying to sound intelligent. There is a big difference between sounding and being, my friends. Let's see where you stand on the "other" coming disappointments that aren't as high profile. The truth hurts, but pace yourself...

It's a shame the movie was a complete disaster. I seriously regret sitting through it, I don't expect that the audiences will line up a lot over the next few weeks. At least no when more family friendly films like Shrek The Third and POTC:AWE are coming. Plus now we have three more Spiderman films to wait for...which can't be expected to be very good if they can't keep their cast. Hollywood never learns...

kristalrose29 Mon, May 7, 2007 at 10:02 PM EST

We're all desperate for a good "Summer Move". I'll bet if it had been released mid June, and movies like "Shrek the Third", "Pirates 3" "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phenoix" and some of the other summer movies were out, its box office would not have been a fraction of what it was. What was it competing against? I can't think of another big movie premiering in the past two weekends.

Maeve Mon, May 7, 2007 at 07:46 PM EST

Too bad it wasn't very good.

PJ Mon, May 7, 2007 at 07:28 PM EST

It will be interesting to see how it does in the next few weeks, given that the word of mouth isn't good.

Amber Mon, May 7, 2007 at 07:22 PM EST

I agree, I was bored throughout much of it. It seemed like there was too much going on and wasn't polished. Good for Spidey though.

Andy Mon, May 7, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

I didn't like Spider-Man 3; I was thouroughly disappointed. But I'm not saddended by its success. I'm very happy for it. If not for anything, just to insure there WILL be a fourth one, because if they end on that bloated chunk of celluloid, I'd be even more disappointed.

mike Mon, May 7, 2007 at 06:31 PM EST

This one's not as good as the first two. There are a couple of very weak plot points. But, the action is good enough. For a PART III, it didn't suck.

Nori Mon, May 7, 2007 at 05:53 PM EST

I bet there will be a decent population of fanboys that will go back for repeat viewings. Besides, even a 60% drop will still be 60 million!

Crystal Mon, May 7, 2007 at 05:49 PM EST

Congrats to Sony! Seriously, because DAMN.

Sven Mon, May 7, 2007 at 05:29 PM EST

Safe to bet it will see at least a 50% drop off this coming weekend. At least I can sleep soundly knowing the film won't make one penny off me.
