An early look at 'The Clone Wars'

Presumably still rolling around in huge piles of cash brushing the confetti out of their hair, the fatcats kind and generous folks at Lucasfilm used this past weekend’s Star Wars 30th anniversary bash in L.A. to unveil a two-minute teaser of The Clone Wars, a half-hour cartoon series that will air some time in 2009. Even though I should know better, I felt a twinge of excitement while watching the clip: the roaring thrum of spaceships, menacing buzz of lightsabers, and John Williams(esque?) score get me every time.

Like the series of almost the same name that ran on Cartoon Network from 2003 to 2005, The Clone Wars will present events that take place in between Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. But the new show — the first project from the newly created animation division of Lucasfilm — opts for a less cartoony sensibility, embracing a vaguely CGI-ish look that is darker and more visually dense, while retaining some of the character-design DNA of Genndy Tartakovsky's original vision. (Obi-Wan Kenobi's beard looks solid and sharp enough to slice through a Bantha hide.)

What are your impressions, PopWatchers? Do those brief shots of Yoda, Mace Windu, and an unidentified Fett get your geek juices flowing? Do you like the series' dark new look?  Will you still be waiting two years from now?

I'm psyched, but must admit being more excited for the tv series that's supposed to tell the tale that took place between eps 3 and 4. It seems there's a wealth of stories that could be told regarding the birth of the Empire.

And I'm still hoping there'll be a west wing style show where Darth Vader becomes a Senator. Anakin goes to Washington...

I'll second you in that, EC. As soon as I saw the now-familiar Clones 'n' stuff, I felt the ol' "been there, done that" vibe and my excitement waned considerably. It perked back up some, sure, with the well executed-ness of the thing, and I, too, will watch, but can't we end The Clone Wars already? How about some new stuff, huh, Lucas?

This makes me want to remake the Third Man entirely in CGI. Sure, it's completely unnecessary, and will undoubtedly pale in comparison, but we have the technology!

Seriously, why doesn't he try to remake something that sucked in the first place? Howard the Duck deserves a better film!

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Since they still have two years to go until launch, I assume that they will have smotthed out some of the stiffness in the animation. I think this will ultimately be a fun trifle, just like the original Clone Wars series. I can't wait to see it blown up on an HD set.

Also, apparently they're also doing a live-action series set after ROTJ that won't launch until 2010.

Is this supposed to replace the Clone Wars cartoon? It looks good, but it's a been there done that sort of thing. Honestly, I would love if Lucas would either go forward with the story (80 - 100 years after ROTJ) or back (1000 + years before the Clone Wars, there would be some good material there with the Sith Wars). I'll watch it for sure, but not my first choice.

I kinda wish it wasn't CGI and was 2D like the first Clone Wars animated series, but it does look very nice. The Clone Wars series by Genndy Tartakovsky was the best thing to come out of the new trilogy! I mean, you don't have to deal w/Hayden Christianson so that's a plus, right? (because it's obvious he couldn't act his way out of a paper sack)
Is Genndy Tartakovsky working on this new version as well? I really hope so. He is such a genius and one of the best animators of this day and age. Watching an episode of Samurai Jack will tell you that much.

It looks like a CGI version of the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars cartoons, the way the characters are drawn. But yeah the old 'clone wars' looked way more fluid. I wonder if they'll be using the same storylines or not.

All in all, great. I'm not sure the faces are expressive enough, though. The animation seemed very stiff.

I am cautiously optimistic. I absolutely LOVE Star Wars, but my geeky, giddy excitement has been tempered somewhat by the overall disappointment of the "prequel" trilogy. You can be darn sure I'll still be watching, though!!!
