Presumably still rolling around in huge piles of cash brushing the confetti out of their hair, the fatcats kind and generous folks at Lucasfilm used this past weekend’s Star Wars 30th anniversary bash in L.A. to unveil a two-minute teaser of The Clone Wars, a half-hour cartoon series that will air some time in 2009. Even though I should know better,
I felt a twinge of excitement while watching the clip: the roaring
thrum of spaceships, menacing buzz of lightsabers, and John
Williams(esque?) score get me every time.
Like the series of almost the same name that ran on Cartoon Network from 2003 to 2005, The Clone Wars will present events that take place in between Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. But the new show — the first project from the newly created animation division of Lucasfilm — opts for a less cartoony sensibility, embracing a vaguely CGI-ish look that is darker and more visually dense, while retaining some of the character-design DNA of Genndy Tartakovsky's original vision. (Obi-Wan Kenobi's beard looks solid and sharp enough to slice through a Bantha hide.)
