Live-Blogging the 'American Idol' finale!

May 23, 2007, 08:00 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: 'American Idol'

Idolblog_l It's the moment, stretched out over two hours, that we've all been waiting for! I'm coming to you live from the Kodak Theatre the Entertainment Weekly Information Center.  (Unlike some editors here, I don't have a TV in my office. Perhaps because I don't have an office.) Latest results from our EW.com poll show that 61 percent of you are expecting Jordin Sparks to be crowned the next American Idol. The other 39 percent of you are probably expecting Jordin to win, but voted for Blake Lewis anyway (like me). Also worth noting, 30 percent of you consider this season's "This is My Now" the all-time worst Idol anthem. (Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Proud," however, leads with 37 percent of your ire.)

In case you missed Fox's Red Carpet Spectacular at 7:30: Simon called the finale a "walk-over" in Jordin's favor; Randy tried to console Blake by reminding him of Daughtry's sales (subtle, dawg); Paula finally said Jordin has a slight edge; Teri Hatcher admitted she misses Melinda; and the Hoff is in the house!

One minute to go! We blog after the break...

8:01 pm Jeff Foxworthy!

8:02 pm Paula feels "excellent!" And that's all Ryan lets her say. Yes!

8:03 pm Jordin and Blake singing "I Saw Her Standing There." Luckily Blake changed from the powder blue ensemble he wore in the pre-show. How high are Jordin's heels?

8:04 pm Jordin and Blake should not sing together. Jordin should not dance.

8:05 pm Gwen Stefani singing "4 in the Morning." Live from somewhere. How can I have nothing to say about that outfit-- other than I like it? Could it be the Corona?

8:08 pm When we return our Top 12 are back "with more than a few surprises."

8:12 pm Kelly Clarkson singing her new single, "Never Again." Did she get rid of the nose ring? Yes! If you ask me, you shouldn't sing a song in which you're "ticked" and have the words Sunday school in it.

8:14 pm Oh, it's not over. Never again should she wear thigh-high boots. Jordin, this is how you do anger.

8:16 pm Clive Davis liked it! So did Jerry Springer! And Foxworthy! Jennifer Hudson, too.

8:19 pm The Golden Idol for Best Presentation goes to... Margaret Fowler. And she just kissed Ryan Seacrest. Why am I jealous of her? Could it be the Corona?

8:20 pm Poetry? I thought the Bachelor finale was Monday?

8:21 pm Our Top Six guys singing some Smokey Robinson. Ooh, Baby Baby, Phil. You don't suck.

8:23 pm Smokey singing with them. God, I'm uninspired. Oh wait, we're dancing.

8:28 pm Commercial. To whoever just posted this: "the only thing tight about that performance was Smokey's face," thank you for saying what I was scared to.

8:30 pm Plugging the Idol band spin-off. Snore.

8:33 pm
Ohmygod. (She repeats it three-three times.) Blake is holding his own opposite Doug E. Fresh, who you know meant business after he took off the shades. And missed that one note.

8:36 pm Most Original Vocal goes to...  oh, who am I kidding. I do not care. He's singing "Silent Night."

8:38 pm Plugging the summer American Idol tour. Snore. Top 6 girls singing "I Heard it Through the Grapevine." Haley's dress is longer than expected.

8:39 pm Gladys Knight looks better than Smokey great. We're leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, y'all. Melinda and Kiki are getting their props.

8:42 pm The Hoff did not cry. Yet.

8:47 pm Tony Bennett singing "For Once in My Life." I would so love it if Paula would just walk up on stage and slow dance with him. You know she wants to.

8:49 pm This is the performance of the season. Nothing is a tribute to the man's class and talent like cutting to Springer and Foxworthy.

8:51 pm If Ryan and Simon win Best Buddies, PLEASE LET SIMON KISS HIM LIKE CHICKEN LADY DID.

8:53 pm Boo. I'm now jealous of Kenneth and Jonathan, who've gone to more events than I have.

8:54 pm Melinda singing "Hold Up the Light" with BeBe and CeCe Winans. Incidentally, Will Bottnick, one of the EW librarians, is also singing it.

8:59 pm Using commercial break to Google the bush baby "Simon" in Milwaukee? Finding anything?

9:02 pm Jordin and Blake get brand new Mustangs. Shouldn't Melinda get one for being a contortionist? Did I see that right in the video?

9:04 pm Carrie Underwood is hurting my ears singing "I'll Stand By You."

9:06 pm Brittany Murphy and Teri Hatcher liked it. (She did finish strong-ish.) Clive Davis is making Taylor Hicks feel this big talking about Chris Daughtry's sales.

9:10 pm Sorry, I was confused. We were praising Carrie Underwood, who has sold 6 million albums in the U.S. alone. Springer and Foxworthy again!

9:11 pm "Let's get back to the show and the winner!" Carrie and I just made up.

9:14 pm Um, PopWatcher Chad, what's this about: "Tony Bennett was classy and amazing about 80 years ago." Them fightin' words.

9:15 pm The African Children's Choir. If we cut to Springer and Foxworthy after this...

9:17 pm Okay, we didn't. Worse, we cut to Sanjaya singing "You Really Got Me." WITH JOE PERRY ON GUITAR!? Confession: I gasped, thinking Ryan had said Steve Perry. Can you imagine?

9:20 pm The wind machine. The crying girl sitting one row infront of Chicken Lady. Will has heartburn. I'm wishing this moment of "rock history" could have included a close-up of Joe Perry and his chest. Is that too much to ask?

9:23 pm Green Day doing John Lennon's "Working Class Hero." Do you think they'll have mentors on the band Idol? That could be cool. Anyone else hoping Duran Duran calls Blake tomorrow morning? (10:36 pm edit Felt the need to clarify, this isn't sarcasm. I'd love to hear the sound they'd come up with.)

9:27 pm Anyone else forget what show we're watching? Thirty-three more minutes, folks.

9:30 pm You know, I've never watched So You Think You Can Dance. Should I be?  Love that they go straight to Taylor Hicks from that ad. He sounds fine. And he's workin' the room. And yet, I have no desire to buy his album.

9:32 pm Will thought that was Calista Flockhart infront of Ace. We had to rewind. She's too A-list for this finale.

9:34 pm Running and playing the harmonica at the same time must be incredibly hard. Soul Patrol!

9:35 pm Ruben really can sing. Although, I was hoping Jordin would do "MMMBop" with Hanson. They have a new album coming out, you know. (11:16 pm edit Again, not sarcasm.)

9:36 pm That was Jordin's best dance performance of the season. The commercials are coming quicker now, right? The ad rate must increase for the last half hour.

9:42 pm Bette Midler singing "Wind Beneath My Wings." In a leather miniskirt. So far, this performance is not making me want to rush to see her in Vegas when she replaces Celine. Oh wait, she just twisted to flair her skirt. I'm there.

9:44 pm Paula, I said dance with Tony Bennett-- not Randy.

9:45 pm Jerry Springer, ladies and gentleman! Tears in the eyes. His, not mine.

9:46 pm "Spider-pig, Spider-pig. Does whatever Spider-pig can." I've never seen an episode of The Simpsons. (Yeah, I know.) But I'm seeing the movie because of that ad. Money well spent, 20th Century Fox.

9:50 pm Kelly and Joe Perry doing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Might be time to get new backup singers, American Idol.

9:52 pm Taylor is back. Will liked him when he was mellow. I was digging him until the end turn.

9:54 pm Carrie Underwood singing "She's Leaving Home." Can we just cut to Paul McCartney already? This is a good look for Carrie. Simple, sexy black dress that she probably had to wrestle from Haley.

9:56 pm Ruben doing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Top 12 singing "With a Little Help From My Friends." In Kiki's case, her girls! Hello! They are in fine form tonight.

10:03 pm "It is time America." Not quite. First, final thoughts from the judges. Dim the lights. Here we go. After a world record vote of 74 million votes, the winner is... Jordin Sparks. Interesting, no tears.

10:06 pm Paula's crying. I'm crying, too... because I have to hear "This is My Now" again.

10:07 pm Seriously, you guys, why didn't Jennifer Hudson sing? She was lookin' (and soundin') fine in the pre-show.

10:09 pm  Most anticlimactic show ever? Let the debate begin below. You know EW.com will have more American Idol coverage than you can handle, so keep checking back later tonight and into tomorrow. It's been a pleasure spending the night with you. And for the record, I haven't even finished that Corona. Yet.

Whoooo! Jordin rocked the house!!!

div Sun, Jul 29, 2007 at 07:35 AM EST

hey all of u there, i wanted Blake to be the winner !!!!!!! anyways may be next time ;) American Idol is returning for a sixth season and promises to be the biggest season to date. It all begins January 16, 2007 with a double premiere. Idolites can expect this season to began with the normal highs and lows as Paul, Randy, and Simon weed through grueling days trying to find the scattered performers ( a term used loosely) that actually have talent. Get more details on www.idol-mania.com

Trudy Thu, Jun 7, 2007 at 08:29 AM EST

At least in this photo she does not look like a "Poopy Doll." I still think they make a nice looking couple.

Wed, May 30, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

Go Jordin! I'm glad she won! I thought that Carrie Underwood was the best winner on American Idol! She AWESOME!!!!!! Any way, GO JORDIN!!!!!!!

laura Wed, May 30, 2007 at 08:57 AM EST

Jordin and Blake will be performing live tomorrow morning, May 31 on NBC's Today show.

Kagan (again) Mon, May 28, 2007 at 07:42 PM EST

Forgot to include how original this is my now is (SARCASM) I mean how did they think of that?!!!

Blake so should have gotten a different song!!!!! STILL LOVE HIM!!!

Kagan Mon, May 28, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

Hottie Blake should have won!!!!

Oh well, I'll be first in line for his album!!!
By the way, loved the MMMBop and duran duran comments, so agree!

T Sun, May 27, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

Melinda is overrated and Jordin was amazing! I know she will be a HUGE success. I like Blake, but GO JORDIN!!!!!!!!!

Peeves Sun, May 27, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

Peeves wuz ere!

He, he, he.

BlakerGirl Sun, May 27, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Blake should have won!! The producers really should have picked 2 songwriter winners or ATLEAST let Blake change the song alittle but i love ur article!!

Susan Chaney Sat, May 26, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

I am glad Jordan won! However, I loved Blake too! She has the better singing voice in anything she sang. Blake will make it on his own. The time with Antonio Banderas? Voice on Shrek. He sounded just the same. So being second maybe a benefit as "not sure" you do not have to pay idol for 7 years.

Jenna Sat, May 26, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

ITA about Spider Pig and have been singing it since then! Please tell me that Bette has been the victim of some rare tropical illness and that is why she was so HORrible! It looked like her choreography from Margaret Fowler!

Angela Fri, May 25, 2007 at 06:41 PM EST

Loved your capture of what happened during the loooonnnnggg American Idol finale.

shannon Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:16 PM EST

Kelly is way overrated. What a boring performance. She must not have made much money since Idol. She looked like crap.

yellehs2 Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:13 AM EST

Mandi, loved your blog, even though I didn't find it until the day after. So funny, and I needed a laugh after last night! I was on the edge of my chair waiting for the "big finale" thinking as many others that surely it would be Sir Paul, it was obviously what we were building up to. Then...nothing. Bette Midler? And that same worn out song. I think everyone knew Jordin was going to win, Randy giving Blake a pep talk about Chris D.'s sales pre-show was as much a dead give-a-way as anything else. And the opening song.."She Was Just 17" (please, God, don't let anyone 17 compete next year). And then, poor Jordin couldn't have worked any harder to squeeze out a tear and look surprised. I used to be a Jordin fan, but Randy's constant pimping and Simon's nasty remarks to Blake made me a Blake fan forever. Another plus for him...he won't have to record that horrible song that was obviously picked for Jordin. Blake, Melinda, LaKeshia...the real winners.

Miss USA Thu, May 24, 2007 at 11:53 PM EST

I hate Jordin she is such a blase singer. It should have been Blake winning the number one spot.

Yo Thu, May 24, 2007 at 11:02 PM EST

I completely agree with you Gobble!

I've been thinking the same thing for a long time as well.

MelindaFan Thu, May 24, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

First of all, without Melinda, there was really no point. It was very anticlimactic. But what the heck was the business with running over? We DVR'd the show and only saw who won because of the news. I didn't even know Bette was on!! (and I love her).
But, seriously, when Melinda was eliminated, it all became trivial.

MelindaFan Thu, May 24, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

Isabella Thu, May 24, 2007 at 04:54 PM EST

"8:04 pm Jordin and Blake should not sing together. Jordin should not dance."
HAHAHAH - Thankyou! I said at the beginning of the year Jordin shouldn't dance. When she tries to, she looks like she has epilepsy! hahaha

Gobble Thu, May 24, 2007 at 03:38 PM EST

I think Carrie Underwood has a major crush on Ryan Seacrest.
I love Carrie and I love Ryan. They would be perfect for each other.

Is it just me thinking she has a crush on him?
During season 4 I thought they had a crush on one another and I still do to this day.
The way they were looking at each other last night....mmm hmmm. It's a crush!

Bob Thu, May 24, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

I still can't believe that Jordin is only 17!!! They should've mentioned that on the show...

labrat Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

Agree with you, Bird. It was so horrible I was also glad to have the FF button. Bette Midler was singing like she just got Botox and couldn't open her mouth. Skipped A LOT of it. You didn't miss much at the end. No fake tears from Jordin because she didn't have to win anyone over at that point. Plus you got to miss that atrocious song at which point I hit "Delete this program now."

Stephanie T. Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

Maggie Fowler clearly dresses like her last name.

And I'll say it again, if you are really offended by Simons comments especially if you have a developmental disability, don't agree to sign, or your guardian should not sign the release form to allow your video to be shown. Jon Jayne had no clue what was going on, but Kenneth did. If I was that offended, I would have filed a complaint with United States District Attorney's department. Kenneth was not being exploited. He chose to be.

bird Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:41 PM EST

When LaKisha and Melinda were booted off, it was over as far as I was concerned. Last night was an overly-long and bloated American Idol. My TiVo turned itself off at 10pm and they hadn't even named a winner yet. On the plus side, I got to fast forward through the show instead of suffering through it.

labrat Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Amanda - So you actually got to see Daughtry's performance the other night on your DVR without programming it for extra minutes? Wow, you are the only one I know who did. Everyone I've talked to was mad about missing him because the show ran over and into the next program. Are you sure you don't have it set to record for an extra 5 minutes? Hmmmm......maybe it's just the mountain time zone.....

Babes Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

Best Idol finale ever because of previous Idol winners features. Loved it! It's so nostalgic--- I wished that they included the runner ups, what a show that would be. Most memorable is the Beatles medley of the idol winners--gave me goose bumps and a good feeling of watching Idol every year; plus AI rewind of season 1, just added up to the excitement of why AI became a reality show Icon. Glad that AI thought about showing off the talents they discovered through the years. They were the ones that made the finale a memorable show to remember. Glad I taped it!!! *smile*

brenda Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

Jordin and Ruben foreshadowed the future. And what's with the fake award for Carrie Underwood when you have an OSCAR WINNER sitting in the house?

patti Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

I am the only person that tivo'd the show for two hours and missed the end?????Was i suppose to know it was going to go into extra minutes????????

Kiki and Jennifer Hudson should have sang together.

Kiki and Jennifer Hudson should have sang together.

Scarlet Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

Hey, why did Sanjaya get to sing a solo, but Lakisha didn't? Also, Rueben didn't get a solo, but all other Idol winners did! Gwen and Bette sounded awful. And after that Beatle medley, I did expect Paul McCartney to show up. Where was their "big" guest, ala Prince last year?

J-Hud Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

Kiki and Jennifer Hudson should have sang together.

Brainiac Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:05 PM EST

Strange Season. I feel that the judges deliberately left a lot of good people out of the top 24. Was it in an effort to have no Southerners in the finale? Did they want to keep things "fresh" by having fewer powerhouses and superstars? I'm not too sure. Maybe Simon just wanted to be able to insult people, even in the top 12, more often.

Melinda should have won. I'll be getting her CD for sure.

The finale was so bloated and jam-packed with random acts. I almost forgot they were going to crown a winner. It also didn't help that I had about zero enthusiasm. I was still bitter about Melinda being booted prematurely. (I know, I know, I gotta get over it. She's probably better off, anyway. She'll pull an Aiken, Judson, or Daughtry on us.)

Rachel Thu, May 24, 2007 at 11:55 AM EST

Totally anti-climactic

Amanda Thu, May 24, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

Labrat, I have watched every episode of AI on my dvr this season, and I have not run into ANY problems with the shows running over - always saw the end, until last night. I KNOW how to work my dvr and have changed the recording time (which, btw, you can do rather than recording a whole other show afterwards). But I had no reason to think I needed to last night.

labrat Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:59 AM EST

Sorry to all you people who don't know how to work your DVRs. The first time a show runs over and you miss the end you MUST learn to record the show that follows when the show is on again. AI has been running over time by at least a couple of minutes for the last couple of weeks. Results shows, season finales, etc. - Always record whatever is on afterwards. Oh, and On The Lot is available at the Fox website.

Jamie Proulx Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

So my DVR completely cut off the end. Lame. YouTube failed me - nothing was posted as of 11:30 CT. But it sounds like it was more interesting finding out the winner from my local news website. Ouch.

Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:45 AM EST

Rumor has it that someone let it slip that Jordin had won. The 12 were already aware of it since Wednesday morning. She couldn't cry because she wasn't surprised.

taylor= best

TM Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:12 AM EST

Was that a quick shot of Soleil Moon Frye in the audience near the beginning of the show? It looked like her to me, but I'm probably wrong...

Jim Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

Minnie Mouse was off winning unanimous raves from New York theatre critics. Heck, even I want to see her in "The Color Purple" now.

monica s Thu, May 24, 2007 at 10:06 AM EST

yawn. it was boring and i hope never to hear from this little girl ever again. is it just me or did her tears seem SO FAKE??? she knew she would win. this show jumped ship after kelly won. don't get me wrong, chris, fantasia and carrie are doing great but everyone else that comes out is just boring! i'm sorry jennifer hudson is SO OVERATED in dreamgirls. maybe she'll disappear like justin what his name or um the other people i can't even think of their names.

Renee Thu, May 24, 2007 at 09:55 AM EST

For all of you that don't like Idol you are sure putting alot of time in talking about it. If you don't like it then leave it alone. Jordin is a very good singer you guys are just jealous. So just leave her alone and get on with your lives.

peachmahoney Thu, May 24, 2007 at 09:45 AM EST

Well hats off to you for only having one beer through that. I plowed through an entire bottle of Chardonay and I still didn't have fun.
Kelly was fantastic as was Tony. Bette seemed a bit out of her element but I still love her.

Baby Thu, May 24, 2007 at 09:30 AM EST

In the words of Simon Cowell: "You have really got to raise your game." I suggest that he and the producers of this show take his advice. This year's Idol was a serious disappointment. Idol must raise their own bar and surpass it, because they have lost ground.

Baby Thu, May 24, 2007 at 08:33 AM EST

Lala1215: you have about four typing errors on your post, but I am sure you were in a hurry. To those who missed minnie mouse Fantasia being on the final show, woohoo!! Glad she did not show.

So Jordin won,oh well, another season of mediocrity.

Benny Thu, May 24, 2007 at 08:15 AM EST

The show was too long. Watching Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood perform lets us know that Jordin has big shoes to fit. They were the best part of the show. Ruben did okay, but we could have easily done without Taylor Hicks. I had forgotten about him and now I know why. In the group numbers, the girls were better than the guys- not surprising, since this happened during the whole season 6.

Winona Thu, May 24, 2007 at 07:47 AM EST

As a HUGE Beatle fan, the night was unexpected, yet anticlimactic, because I, too, was expecting a Macca appearance (because, like Hanson, he has a new album coming out, too). And thanks once again for the Hanson mention, Mandi.

Gina Thu, May 24, 2007 at 07:40 AM EST

They could have at least shown that it would have been extended by 10 minutes, so that this way the DVR would have automatically recorded it. I watched that entire finale, all the filler and nonsense and i didn't get to see Jordin win....IDOL and Fox really suck

Jim Thu, May 24, 2007 at 07:29 AM EST

I love Melinda but I hated that song. About as subtle as a sledgehammer and even worse, very poorly written. I thought country music had cornered the market on bad patriotic songs.

Still can't wait to see Bette in Vegas, despite the creakiness. You see her for the whole package anyway--jokes, glitz and voice.

billyinthedarbies Thu, May 24, 2007 at 07:26 AM EST

I've been disillusioned with American democracy ever since Al Gore got more votes in the 2000 election, but the Supreme Court appointed Bush to be president anyway.

Thanks for restoring my faith, AI.

Bill Thu, May 24, 2007 at 06:17 AM EST

I thought I was going crazy for a little bit. Yeah, my DVR didn't capture Jordin winning either. Shove it, Verizon Vios.

At least it captured every minute of LOST!!!!! Fantastic!!!!!

kimb Thu, May 24, 2007 at 06:09 AM EST

A note to the person who said that we should have watched it live if we really wanted to see it and not complain about our DVR's...some of us have jobs, homelifes, and responsibilities that come before TV, and depend on being able to watch shows that we enjoy on our downtime. 2 nites in a row AI ran over and cut off the best part of both shows which effectively *&%$#@# their customers who have supported this show. There is no excuse for that in this day and age. BTW, running over on the first nite caused my DVR to cut off the end of On the Lot as well. Great way to intro a new show, huh?

mendocino mellow Thu, May 24, 2007 at 05:13 AM EST

I loved lots of this show - especially Tony Bennett and Bette and Green Day and, yes Sanjaya - but I thought the perfect ending was building up to Paul McCartney singing "Yesterday." oh yeah and I wanted Blake to win.

Blakerboy Thu, May 24, 2007 at 04:04 AM EST

I almost lost all respect for the show after that chicken lady came on. And then that Sanjaya was back!? Suprisingly I had fun during that performance though. Where was Fantasia, but I don't really mind. And myDVR also cut out but it's not like I didn't know who already won. I just need to secure my beliefs.

Mo Thu, May 24, 2007 at 03:41 AM EST

I heard so much hype about last year's finale, which I missed, that I decided to watch the whole damned thing this year. What a rip-off! The only part I really enjoyed was "Midnight Train to Georgia." Well, and Bette Midler, but that was for reasons not at all related to vocal prowess (was she off-key??) And to top it all off, after watching the whole darned thing, my DVR cut off the announcement of the winner. Talk about anti-climactic! You would think they'd realize that a lot of people are going to record it, and make the time slot longer. Or, you know, not run over. Anyhow, overall, a big waste of time.

anonymous Thu, May 24, 2007 at 03:27 AM EST

blake should have won american idol!!! I mean, come on he's got the talent and the whole package. Jordin could only sing. Did anyone else notice that during the final performance night, Jordin cried when she sang This is my now? That was just so typical, i mean its just a tactic to get more votes. Blake is sooo much better than her. I'll always and forever be a blaker girl!!!

Ogre Thu, May 24, 2007 at 03:05 AM EST

Gwen Stefani And Greenday were completely a waste and irrelevant.
Give the performers on the show their performances. The past and present idols were good.

Let's admit that Melinda had a better voice, but for a 17 year year old Jordin did an increible job - poise, presence and delivery, She is the best winner yet and I expect grest things from her, Melinda;ps career will take care of itself,m if record producers have any brains at all!

mary Thu, May 24, 2007 at 02:06 AM EST

Gwen's dress was horrible...it looked like she had on a giant diaper in the back.....
I thought Ryan said "Steve" Perry too....and honestly, the hottest thing about the show was Joe Perry.

LOST was awesome times a million.

Allie Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:58 AM EST

Kelly was the best of the night, she showed everyone what's up... Carrie too... Jordin is absolutley NO Carrie or Kelly, and I am soooo happy Blake does'nt have to sing that terrible song!

Dan Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:57 AM EST

Clarkson stunk up the joint. If her voice is shot she should have stayed home. She didn't sell me any albums with that mess. She looks like ass too. Hey Kelly, Jenny Craig on line 2.

Lee Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:56 AM EST

LOST was 10x better than AI. Was anyone else surprised to see Walt?

Elizabeth Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:54 AM EST

Congratulations jordin, but in case anyone wanted a satisfying ending, did you guys see the LOST season finale, it was a mind blower.... best 2 hours of television all year.

Lori Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:54 AM EST

What a waste of my 2 hours only to not see who won because it ran over and the DVR stopped recording at 10pm!! Ridiculous!! The "Golden Idol Awards" were stupid, unfunny and uninteresting and bloated an already dull show. I thought the performances were mostly flat and uninteresting, and some of them I wondered just why the h*ll they were on stage. Whoever planned the finale should be fired.

Lola Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:51 AM EST

So much nastiness. So much passionate hate being dumped on AI. For the haters...have you 1) lost your TV remote or 2) lost the ability to hit the "off" button with your thumb? Year after year we get a cheesy but feel-good talent show. I personally love it. For the haters, try to go to your happy place.

So glad Blake came in second so he can "keep it real" and "do his own thang, dawg." Best moments for me tonight: Melinda with BeBe and CeCe, Afr Childrens Choir, and Carrie Underwood -- I thought she sounded great.

Upset Viewer Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:39 AM EST

So, as I always do, I DVR'd the show and watched it a bit later to skip the commercials.

Much to my frustration the recording stopped at 10:02, before the winners were announced. I had to go online to find out who won, after suffering through the two full hours of performances.

Come on Fox, if you're going to go over, at least make sure the cable companies know the deal, yo!

First time on... Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:31 AM EST

wow~Just read through many of the posts and there are some pretty negative and caustic people here. Wouldn't want to be at a party with any of them...just too depressing. This board is full of people spending way too much time trying to come up wth the rudest, critical and most cutting remarks. I thought the show was just that...a show...that was entertaining, but not warranting such gut wrenching, negatively bitting responses. It gives the impression that some do not appear to have any joy in their lives. Sad.

mrclean Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:24 AM EST

worst ending to the worst season ever... in fact, I never saw the actual ending because Idol ran over and my DVR cut out after the utterly pointless Sgt Pepper tribute. but Thank God I got to see that lady in the yellow bird costume. see you in Hell, American Idol.

anon Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:11 AM EST

So what genre will Jordin be singing in? I just can't picture her doing a Kelly or Carrie..maybe they'll get her to sing all the theme songs to Disney movies since she has a penchant for that kind of stuff? Let's see if all the Jordin votes actually transform into album sales..

bg Thu, May 24, 2007 at 01:01 AM EST

Jordin seems like a perfectly nice girl with a very good voice. I don't understand all the hatred directed towards her. Some people get WAY too into this show. All of the contestants got some great exposure and all those who get good producers will be successful. SOMEONE had too win. Why not just be happy for them and wish everyone else well. The show was however hopelessly bloated and random. With all the money involved, couldn't they have hired a producer to make a show that had some type of flow and rhythm. I find these reality results shows a cross we must bear to find out who wins, not entertaining in the least.

SueCali Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:53 AM EST

What a freak show it turned out to be with the "Awards"....very poor taste in putting on the picture of the "wide eyed" monkey and then shooting back to the poor soul accepting his "award"...(were they thanking him for letting A.I. insult him...one more time??) Very disappointed with all of the too many "this is my now" moments from past performers and then running over the show's time limit for those of us who DVR'd this boring finale! What a disappointment....but glad Jordin got her "now" moment. She can definitely "blow" as Randy says.

MarieL Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:45 AM EST

Jordin will make a decent Idol...Blake will still do okay. This season's finale definitely lacked in comparison to last year's (think Chris Daughtry's duet with Live, and Elliott's with Mary J.). The Golden Idol awards were once again an infantile embarrassing joke that the producers would be wise to can forever. Highlights: Carrie, Kelly and the duets. Gladys Knight still rocks. The top 4 were worthy of their spots, but the top 12 on the whole were disappointing. Here's hoping for a better pool of talent in 2008 with no gimmicks and less hair.

Aishwarya Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:45 AM EST

As an Indian who loves american idol (the indian version sucks) I have to say sanjaya is an embrrassment to my country. That having been said I will buy blake's album the moment it hits the market... jordin will go down like diana degarmo and blake will just rise to stardom. As long as he doesn't sing "This is my now" he will do just fine

ryan seacrest Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:45 AM EST

Sure, Blake is prettier, but Jordin has though huge man hands. I love it when she touches me with them. Hope she keeps in touch. wink

DanOregon Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:43 AM EST

Props to Reuben and the rest of the alums that showed up to illustrate the shows slide to mediocrity. It was like listening to an evolution chart in reverse. Who is the guy Kelly Clarkson is so pissed at?

Kelly was amazing, Taylor was very good, and Tony Bennett was touching. The duets were entertaining. I've been disappointed all season but this was a good show. It is ridiculous that it ran too long after all the time wasting with the silly awards and Clive Davis droning on about sales.

Laura Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:16 AM EST

"Lost" sure knows how to throw a finale party. I flipped to Idol a couple of times but thought it was ridiculous. Do the Idol producers really think people will keep tuning in for drivel forever.

AMAZING "Lost" finale. I am still reeling!!!!!!! All the other shows need to watch it to see how it's done. Best two hours of television I've seen in a long, long time.

Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:02 AM EST

Hey if you guys really wanted to see the ending - you would have watched it live. Sucks for you, DVR's but AI planned it that way to make you watch next year. Guess what - you will!

Kyle Thu, May 24, 2007 at 12:02 AM EST

Blah... This finale didn't have any of the fire and excitement of last year's finale. Where were all the duets? Too much lip syncing from Gwen, african kids and others. Too many solo acts from previous Idols.

dunc Wed, May 23, 2007 at 11:59 PM EST

the last 2 shows ruined the whole season
for those of us who DVR these shows, they can do a better job to schedule the show longer, or cut off the silly parts like the non contestant awards, or even 1 performance, i dunno... cut sanjaya?
jeesus
50 hours of AI, and i missed Daughtry last night, and tonite
i miss the reveal

what a joke

bj Wed, May 23, 2007 at 11:50 PM EST

Idol stink like day old tuna fish in a can

EJ Wed, May 23, 2007 at 11:49 PM EST

Don't feel sorry for Blake not winning...couldn't you see he was ready to go when Ryan handed them the car keys?

Nancy Wed, May 23, 2007 at 11:47 PM EST

What a great blog! I stayed at work until 8:45 CST so that I wouldn't have to sit through all the build up (crap) and could see just the anti-climatic ending so I only gave up 20 minutes of my evening without too much frustration. Bring on Last Comic Standing!

Danielle Wed, May 23, 2007 at 11:46 PM EST

Thanks to all of you who put the link to the end of the show. DVRs really do stink when it comes to live tv. But Fox should realize that the majority of the tv viewing public is now watching via dvr and is fast forwarding through all the fluff. I think I only watched the first 30 seconds of every performance tonight. It they had limited each of those performances to 1 1/2 minutes like during the competition, we wouldn't have missed the end.

Eli Wed, May 23, 2007 at 11:40 PM EST

Great that Jordin Won, sad for Blake, because we still haven't gotten our first gay american idol... but besides all of that, did anyone catch that Amazing season finale of LOST. Oh my GOD!!! I stood up my seat a good four of five times!!! that was the best 2 hours of television i've seen in quite some time.

ellen Wed, May 23, 2007 at 11:39 PM EST

Shame on you Fox TV. Dragging it out so long that my DVR cut off. Pitiful awards could have been eliminated!
