The Biggest Bands of All Time!

May 30, 2007, 12:24 PM | by Whitney Pastorek

Categories: Music

Rhcp_l My friend Sarah was in town over Memorial Day, and we spent the weekend in the car, driving around and taking pictures of all kinds of offbeat L.A. landmarks (those Watts Towers are really short, up close). We  thusly also spent a lot of time listening to the car radio, and as we flipped around, avoiding commercials, we kept coming across KROQ's countdown of the 106.7 Biggest Bands of All Time.

Oh, how I love me a good list! This one was voted on by KROQ listeners, and when we first encountered the station, they were in the middle of a four-song block from the No. 8 band, U2. We sang along with a live version of "Bad" until we reached our destination, then got back in the car in time for the No. 5 band, Rage Against the Machine. The sound of me hollering "A BULLET IN YOUR HEAD!" provided a perfect soundtrack for our (unsuccessful) quest to find someplace where we could sneak down into the L.A. River. But Band No. 3, Sublime, was incredibly questionable. Really? Sublime as the third-biggest band of all time, KROQ listeners? Especially considering that, once the countdown whipped back around to the end, we learned that the Pixies were way down at No. 104, a full three slots below freakin' Wolfmother (or, as the display on my digital car stereo read, "Wolfmoth")?

Yeah, we started to smell something fishy. But we kept driving, and kept listening, and eventually learned that Nirvana were at No. 2, which left open the huge question, Who in the world would be No. 1? The Clash? Radiohead? Metallica? On Monday, we stopped for a drink at the fabulous Chez Jay before I drove Sarah to the airport. As we pulled into the parking lot, the radio was blasting Pearl Jam's "Dissident," and we figured this was perfect — any countdown that's willing to put Sublime at No. 3 could certainly vote Pearl Jam No. 1, right? I love Pearl Jam! I would have no problems with that choice whatsoever...

But no! Pearl Jam was way down at No. 16!  SIXTEEN!  Beneath the Killers and Linkin Park! Oh God, PopWatchers, this could mean only one thing. Only one band could rise to the top in that sort of environment, and they are pictured above: your No. 1 Biggest Band of All Time, According to the Fine Folk of the Los Angeles Area. I shall withhold comment, except to say that I continue to like that "Snow (Hey Oh)" song, even though Sarah screamed at me to change the station when it came on.

Here's the complete list. Feel free to yell at it in the comments. Please. It thinks Panic! at the Disco is a better band than Talking Heads! This is just not okay.

spyderr Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 10:39 PM EST

Ooh, wtf? Beatles arn't even on the list!?!

And, the killers + foo fighters most definately do not deserve that spot >.<"

Mon, Aug 4, 2008 at 02:41 AM EST

Okay, um, I don't understand how some of these bands even made it up there...no one even knows them...I mean, Panic should be at least as high as Fall Out Boy, seeing as they're just as popular. And the Pixies...way down at 104?!! What's wrong with this world?!!!
Green Day should be a little lower on the list, but they pretty much deserve being so high up the list. Sublime cannot be higher than Oasis, no way. I mean, they're okay but come on now! And what happened to all the classics?! This list is so wrong in so many ways.

KoW~Quadehar Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 10:29 AM EST

Oh m so sorry! its there...:D

KoW~Quadehar Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 10:25 AM EST

Hey where's Linkin Park!
How can one neglect their popularity!?!

Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 10:06 PM EST

oh....my....god....who in their right mind would put The Killers that high on the list......or on the list in general. and...its such an insult to the even better bands after it, including My Chemical Romance, The Police....all of them. I mean...even FALL OUT BOY deserves to be higher thn them and i HATE fall out boy

The Kilers? Mon, Jun 4, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

THE KILLERS!!!!!????? with only one god-awful cd about how people mistake them for woman, and then a second album that totally bombed? I'm starting to think that retarded little girls with rich parents are the ones REALLY running this country.

Ron Mexico Thu, May 31, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

Exactly, I'm not even engaging in this weirdness. Someone's got a bug for me. Whatever.

And, of course we all know this is a KROQ list. I listen to KROQ myself. I'm just not drinking the Sublime Kool-Aid.

I mean, they are pretty good, but come on. Only two albums of any significance, and you're going to rank them that high?

That's like if people in Athens said REM was the top band even if they disbanded after "Murmur" or something.

andy Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:18 PM EST

For the record, it's the 106.7 best KROW bands of all times. Not just the biggest bands of all time. The are the banmds that the listeners of KROW love the best. And as for Sublime being so high up on the list, they really are beloved by the KROQ listeners, this one included.

To Ron...vs. Ron Mexico Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

Say what? What is this non-argument about? To Ron.., you're not making any sense. Just because you don't like Ron (I'm sure a lot of us don't), doesn't give you license to start an argument over something he didn't say in the first place. I'm sure you can handle yourself Ron, but this non-argument is getting irritating!
To Ron Mexico-shut up already!

Jason Bonkers Thu, May 31, 2007 at 09:34 AM EST

I guess he is kissing his own foot because no one else will kiss his stink feet. He gets the prize for Most Pathetic Band Member.

Ron Mexico Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:59 AM EST

Again, I don't really get the attack from whoever you are. You are not making sense. Crossing over into my ranks? You are a weird bird. Oh well, peace.

To Ron Mexico Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:45 AM EST

Thanks for calling me a hypocrite. I have crossed over to your ranks. I love Fleetwood Mac as well buddy, and don't you forget it!

jv Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:23 AM EST

Please it's FM radio, where they get paid to play these bands by the record companies. Why is anyone surprised that bad music for the masses would triumph over music of character or real resonance?
This is why radio sucks and we all need to turn it off!

jv Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:23 AM EST

Michael Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:17 AM EST

This is a joke, right? They could have thrown in some "American Idol" rejects (or winners for that matter) and it wouldn't have been much worse.

sara Thu, May 31, 2007 at 08:06 AM EST

pearl jam should be number one, hands down. they're awesome.

Alex Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:47 AM EST

I lived in L.A. a couple summers ago, and it was during the 10th anniversary of Brad Nowell's death. That weekend was inundated with Sublime and excerpts from Nowell's diary and all that jazz. KROQ LOOOOOOOOOOVES Sublime and so does LA, esp. the LBC, so it doesn't surprise me that it ranked so high. Plus, Sublime is.... sublime - one of my personal faves.

Alex Thu, May 31, 2007 at 12:46 AM EST

jane Wed, May 30, 2007 at 07:57 PM EST

I live in Long Beach and i am embrassed by my town and there taste. How can a list rank Bowie so low he is a influence on most of the bands on this retarded list.

emily Wed, May 30, 2007 at 07:49 PM EST

i used to listen to krock before i got a computer and it sucked. They once played the same white stripe song twice in a half hour. They always play the same old sublime songs and the same junk from Nirvana. The only bands i like that they play are radiohead but they only play creep not there other great stuff that is why they are not on this list. I like the old new wave stuff like the smiths, joy divison and such.

Pirate Wed, May 30, 2007 at 07:15 PM EST

The list was for modern rock only, which would explain how some classic bands are excluded. Also, we do worship sublime in Socal. Every region has their band, as another poster said, Bon Jovi would be it in New Jersey. Also, this is isn't a scientific study of the best bands, it's just people clicking some buttons on a website. So, it's really not a big deal. I have to say this: the demographic is younger and those who worshipped bands like Pearl Jam are older. The next generation didn't care about Eddie Vedder's screaming/whining like the 90's college kids did.

Stephanie Travitsky Wed, May 30, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

I don't agree that RHCP is #1. After Blood, Sex, Magik they lost their edge and became pedantic. California this, California that. Hey! Are you a funky rock band or the damn Beach Boys!!

Oingo I can see. Oingo Boingos music or the band itself pretty much appeared in a lot of teen movies during the 80's. I would say that they were one of the fathers of California Alt Rock.

Mark Wed, May 30, 2007 at 06:30 PM EST

Blondie didn't even crack the top 50?

Patt Wed, May 30, 2007 at 05:55 PM EST

If you listen to KROQ anytime they are not doing a special weekend (say Tuesday afternoon between 2-5) you will hear a minimum of two Sublime songs. The station worships them for some ungodly reason. And the Beasties album "Licensed to Ill." You won't make it three hours without hearing "Paul Revere" or "Girls". And you aren't going to hear bands like The Beatles on KROQ as it is a modern rock/alternative station.

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 05:36 PM EST

What? You mean you don't all listen to the same radio station? What's next? Are you going to tell me that not everyone in Mississippi knows each other?

Sorry, Aramis, you know I'm being sarcastic. I just used to hear that kind of thing all of the time from people - but they were serious. Thought it might be a little funny to pass it along to you.

aramis Wed, May 30, 2007 at 05:28 PM EST

Ron - well I live in east central mississippi. I wouldn't know what biloxi plays, lol.

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 05:10 PM EST

I didn't read down enough to know that Limp Bizkit was actually on the list. In my HUMBLE opinion, that completely invalidates the list altogether.

I think the staff and regular listeners of KROQ should be hauled into the street and shot execution style.

For once, I think I am out of things to say on an issue.

Jessica Wed, May 30, 2007 at 05:04 PM EST

First of all the good: Incubus is a band that rarely gets teh recognition it deserves. I'm psyched that they were so high on the list. And the bad: How on God's beautiful, green earth did Limp Bizkit make the list at all? Let alone above the Sex Pistols? Do people have no shame?

furry_tom Wed, May 30, 2007 at 05:02 PM EST

Ha! Have you ever seen Brian Posehn's bit on Slayer? Eerily apropos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XluRJ5E2hs

Nat X Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:58 PM EST

I'm just glad we can say "suck" again on the comment boards. Cuz RHCP suck.

Question: Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

Why is Flea sucking his toe in the photo above? That's just not necessary...and gross!

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:57 PM EST

What in the hell happened, Aramis? The first time I heard Lords of Acid was on a Biloxi radio station. Who knew! LOL!!!

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:55 PM EST

And granted, Anna, I have been known to allow the jousts to deteriorate into junior high-esque bathroom humor from time-to-time.

But it can never be said that those comments boards were boring or that they did encourage healthy debate - even if I am calling someone smelly.

aramis Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:54 PM EST

Yeah...and there's no POP or Rock anything in Mississippi. Country...classic country, current country...crooners, dollys and dames, all country all the time! *GAG*...Oh wait, I think I came across an old-school R&B station...but it's on a weak signal. LOL.

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:50 PM EST

Look, furry_tom, can't we just keep what you and I get up to while listening to Slayer between us? For Chrissakes!

Ms. America Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

I'm with you on this one Ron; I read through your comments and none of them mention Fleetwood Mac. You probably *did* offend the poster at another comment board. It wouldn't be the first time! You're so notorious for being a "troublemaker" that you are automatically accused of making inflammatory comments, imagined or otherwise. Haha!

furry_tom Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

Ron Mexico touched my bathing suit area.
And BTW, in Ohio there are no adult contemporary radio stations. We only listen to speed metal.

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

You see, my dear Anna, I don't know what exactly I wrote this time that was so provocative. Honestly, everyone has been weighing in here.

I don't know who the character assassin is in this case, but I suspect it is someone that got their feelings hurt by me in a previous post - either by my correction of their writing skills or some petty difference of opinion.

But, as I stated before, KROQ is in Southern California and probably has an age demographic of 15 - 30 year olds that consider themselves fans of "alternative" music.

That's pretty much all anyone needs to know about how the list was compiled.

Go to an adult contemporary station in Ohio or somewhere and Marc Cohn might be the #1. It's all relative.

But certainly, as narcissists, we are all entitled and obligated to pick apart the list!

Danna Wed, May 30, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

That is the kind of list that makes me want to put my head through a wall. And this may be totally wrong but I don't even consider U2 a "rock" bad, so I don't know how in God's name they are that far ahead of Metallica.

Jeff Wed, May 30, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

I wish i got KROQ here.

Mr. Pibb Wed, May 30, 2007 at 03:36 PM EST

It's not the amount of albums but the quality of music & how timeless it is. There are a lot of prolific artists out there that put out mediocre work record after record, should they be in the list instead?

Anjeliki Wed, May 30, 2007 at 03:29 PM EST

No Doubt ahead of The Ramones? Please.

dre Wed, May 30, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

Any band that produced 4 or less albums of original material during their tenure shouldn't even be considered for a list of biggest, best or greatest. Yes, I'm talking about Sublime and Nirvana. The latter is the most overrated band ever, both in regard to the quality of their music and the influence they've had on other artists.

I Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

birdgirl39... ummm.. radiohead is number 11. Maybe your just too old to read without your glasses.

Rahul Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

#6 - Depeche Mode - Yes! Way to mobilize the vote So. Cal fan base!

Matthew Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:32 PM EST

These people are idiots. No band has ever been bigger than The Beatles. So, "of all time" is pretty misleading -- it should have been called "in the lifetime of Generations X and Y."

birdgirl39 Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

Opinions are like a**holes-everyone has one, and firmly believe that everyone eles's stinks. This list stinks. No Radiohead (and I'm 42, supposedly "too old to like that sort of thing, right?)

Ms. America Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

Haha, trouble follows you Ron, everywhere you go! You and your provocative comments...I must say though, I think that I may have been your most worthy adversary...I mean, I did reference dictionaries just to prove you wrong.

Eric Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

My favorite part of the list is all the way down in the fifties where we find R.E.M. sandwiched between Rob Zombie and Poppa Roach. Ironic sarcasm lives!

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

To the person that just attacked me, I'm curious about something.

Why is that everyone is weighing in, but you choose to single me out? I fully accept everyone's right to their opinion, but, in bashing me, you are hypocritically denying me that same right.

No issue with my self esteem, but your need to stir up something with me certainly does bring yours into question.

And what exactly does Fleetwood Mac have to do with anything? I love Fleetwood Mac.

Nose Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:06 PM EST

This is just a thought, but can we make these 'best of' lists disappear all together? I move that we stop making lists and stop saying 'jump the shark' in reference to tv shows. There's strength in numbers, people! Let's do it!

ToRonMexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:57 PM EST

Everyone has an opinion, and of course, you are there to knock it. No matter what Fleetwood Mac has gone through, they were great! I still listen to their music. Now if only Ron could build up his low self-esteem, he would actually learn to accept that others are entitled to their opinions.

Julie Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

I haven't lived in LA in 20 years and I remember KROQ when Richard Blade was there. All I have to say is "THANK GOD" I left. Whada disgrace.

ny1 Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

The B-52's!

furry_tom Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

Sarcastic, that's why I put "but seriously" at the head of the next line. But I'm also 12.

Liza Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

Definitely NOT Bon Jovi

Kathleen Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:29 PM EST

Limp Bizkit rated higher than Primus?!!? I didn't even read anymore of the list. I'm traumatized.

Gokarm Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

Yeah, that seems pretty representative of California. If they did the same list here in New Jersey, Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band would have been in the top 5 (which I DON'T agree with...maybe bruce, but not Bon Jovi).

Liza Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:18 PM EST

U2 should have been higher on the list. But I was glad to see SOAD make the top 20.

LMF Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

Good point, Anna.

Anna Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

LMF- I believe (if I'm understanding his comment right), furry_tom was being sarcastic. Either that, or he's twelve years old.

harry Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:04 PM EST

I think that it was a bad Idea to have a "best bands" list made based on personal favorites. All it really prove is who is listening to what. Its more of a demographics list than anything else. In this case high school chidrens favorites. Now all they have to do is come out with a compolation disc and infomercial the hell out of it on the cartoon network.

LMF Wed, May 30, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

furry_tom, you have just officially given me a heart attack. Blink-182 better than the Clash? Now I love Blink-182, but there are not many bands I would put above the Clash. Ouch.

Stef Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

They let Whitney work at EW because she's awesome. Plus she has something up on you: she can use internet blogs without double-posting.

No Brand Woman Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

Unfortunately, when you have lists like this where the people vote they seem to get some sort of pop culture amnesia and only be able to remember bands from the last 5-10 years. Either that or you get a bunch of lame youngsters who have only been musically concious for the past 5-10 years. Same things with actors and actresses. In my school paper during my high school days, Julia Roberts was voted more famous than Lucille Ball. *headdesk*

James Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

Sublime and The Chili Peppers are California bands. Of course they will be at the top! Why do they let you work at EW?

aramis Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

Paige...omg, i just read your post...and can it be!? Something we both agree on?! LOL. The world will freeze over as giant pigs learn to fly. Offspring is certainly NOT a better band than Metallica. I did notice that on the list, and was expecting a sort of backlash with those two bands (particularly since they are NOTICEABLY one-after-another on the list). Interesting.

James Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:47 PM EST

Sublime and The Chili Peppers are California bands. Of course they will be at the top! Why do they let you work at EW?

Jason Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

I've listened to KROQ for years and it's very simple... the list isn't of the 106.7 bands of all time... it's of the 106.7 KROQ bands of all time.

First of all, it's a completely bogus list. They solicit for listener votes, but in radio these lists are always made up before the listeners even cast the first vote.

Second of all, these bands are very representative of KROQ. Sublime is HUGE in SoCal, and with the KROQ audience.

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:27 PM EST

I never underestimate the power of Long Beach, Tom. I can smell it everytime I drive through there.

I think it was Marlin Brando that once said: "I love the smell of weed and industrial waste in the morning!"

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

And to your point, Suz, am I the only one annoyed at everyone's short memory?

I mean, yeah, alright - AFI is good. I'm not saying newer bands aren't any good, and I'm not saying there weren't suck bands back in my college days (Deadeye Dick, anyone?).

But, come on, there has to be more respect to the bands that made KROQ what it is.

Even as a hesher in the 80's, I would have known that Black Sabbath should be ranked higher than Poison - despite Poison being bigger at the time.

furry_tom Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:23 PM EST

I agree with every choice on this list. Blink-182 is soooo much better than The Clash and The Sex Pistols.
But seriously, this is what happens when you have a list made by committee, some good choices mixed in, but mostly just a whole heap of mediocrity.

Winona Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:21 PM EST

I guess at 32, I'm officially old. I really could care less about this list...after reading it, I smell Hot Topic in my nostrils, and it's not always good.

Tom Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

This list was created by having listeners choose their three favorite bands from a pull-down menu on the KROQ website, so it's by no means scientific. And yes, it is only "KROQ bands," not all bands. Plus, they seem to do this same countdown every two years or so, and a different band usually ends up on top each time. I think Sublime actually won it recently. Never underestimate the power of Long Beach.

Suz Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

I was a KROQ listener when I was growing up in L.A., and I'm not terribly surprised at this list. Just remember it was voted on by people who listen to this station, and basically the more KROQ plays their songs, the higher a band is on the list. People have short memories that way. And yeah, it probably also has a lot to do with the age of the people who voted.

suntrap Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:12 PM EST

Worst. List. Ever. Good Charlotte? In what world do they belong on a best of anything list?
And krikky - I would think David Bowie's skin tight pants in Labyrinth would be a point in his favor.

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

My Chemical Romance and SOAD higher than REM? HAHAHA!!! Yeah, right!

And any list with 311 is a joke - unless it's a list of suck bands trying to fuse raggae and rock.

SoCal needs to put the bong down already.

Nick Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

That list is so retarded.

Anybody with a journalist degree oughta know that the biggest band ever is The Polyphonic Spree.

Thirty two band members.

And this doesn't include The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, who charted in the 1950s.

Anybody who says that the biggest band (which contains four measly, malnourished) members is clearly in need of some remedial schooling.

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Nose, I agree that overall the list is a little younger than Gen-X. But, with the exception of Linkin Park, the top ten all had big runs in the early-mid 90's. I am Gen-X myself, for the record.

Alex Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

Oingo Boingo? Come on. This isn't a list, it's a publicity stunt.

aramis Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

Victor - I wouldn't know. I don't listen to station all the way out here in Mississippi. But when I see a "Best Bands of All Time" moniker, names like Aerosmith (which is a band comparable to the Chili Peppers, and why it's not by this radio station is questionable) and Fleetwood Mac are names that pop into my head right off the bat.

Nose Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

Ron Mexico: as a Gen-Xer, I take exception to that. I would put the average age of the listeners somewhere in "Emo" territory.

Ellipsian Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

Ahhh, Depeche Mode at #6. It continually amazes me that they've never been bigger (although they've had their moments). I'll put Martin Gore's songwriting talents up against literally anyone's.

Jasmine Wed, May 30, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

The fact that Good Charlotte made it onto the list shows the irrelavancy of it.

krikky Wed, May 30, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

That list is a KROQ of sh*t. Fall Out Boy higher than David Bowie?!?! Are you kidding? Maybe his skin-tight satin pants in Labyrinth worked against him...

Ron Mexico Wed, May 30, 2007 at 11:49 AM EST

Well, it's obvious that the list was created based on input from Generation-X.

That explains why the majority of the top bands are either grunge or grunge-era. Metallica and GNR are the only 80's metal represented - and only because they transcended.

Since it is KROQ, and since everyone in SoCal has this thing for Sublime, that explains their high placement. I don't agree with it, but whatever.

The omission of Counting Crows is criminal. Where is Live? And personally, I think RHCP peaked at "Knock Me Down". Sorry, Pepperheads. That's just one man's opinion.

Victor Wed, May 30, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

Hey aramis..
Fleetwood Mac?! Aerosmith?!.. Dude, this list is supposed to be bands THAT YOU HEAR ON THIS PARTICULAR RADIO STATION.. Fleetwood Mac and Aerosmith are NOT KROQ bands..

jen o. Wed, May 30, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

Sara: What did you have in mind?
Harris: Well, I was thinking of taking you on a cultural tour of L.A.
Sara: That's the first ten minutes, then what?

aramis Wed, May 30, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

Red Hot Chili Peppers, no. 1? No way. Sure, they were great in the 90's...when "Under The Bridge" came out it was an instant classic; something we'd never heard before... original & inspired. But they haven't grown as artists over the past decade...all their songs sound the same, and they're still singing about California! (FYI-I'm from CA) I find myself changing the station anytime one of their songs come on the radio. Sure they should be on the list, but no. 1? Puh-leaze.

the rest of the list however is a bit strange...i mean....Beastie Boys, Velvet Underground, The Clash, Garbage, Fleetwood Mac, AEROSMITH!!!!!, these are not on the list...interesting. And very curious...

When did Billy Idol, Marilyn Manson, Jack Johnson and David Bowie become bands?

Indeed. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been around for a LONG time. And look, they're still making relevent, creative, and catchy music (and even picking up a Grammy or two...or three or four). Not only that, but their music is crossing and closing the ages gaps between the crusties like my brother and myself who've been fans for a long time, and the twinkietwits in high school who think they're cool just because they like a RHCP song when they wouldn't even KNOW that some of the best stuff wasn't even commericially released. Still...I'm inclined to agree with this list-topping choice.

another stupid list. how they think that offsprings is a better band than metallica is beyond me...
