Which 'greatest hits' should Idol's final two sing?

May 21, 2007, 11:44 AM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol'

Idoltouts_l If I ran Idol, no contestant would ever be allowed to sing the same song twice during the course of the competition. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know these kids always say how hard it is to learn two or three songs in a week, what with minimal prep time and a super-hectic schedule, but think about it: Wouldn't it stink if Project Runway's designers made the same dress twice? Or the final two Top Model wannabes re-did a photo shoot from earlier in the season? (I can only imagine how fourth-place finisher Dionne might react.)

That said, I doubt Idol is going to change its finale formula, which means Jordin and Blake will each be performing a greatest hit come Tuesday night. Since the former contestant already rehashed "I (Who Have Nothing)" in the final three, I'd have her return to her sensational country-night number, "A Broken Wing," a big, booming ballad that allows the teenage sparkplug to get her angst on without getting shrill.

As for Blake, while on paper, it might make sense for him to recreate the season's ultimate water-cooler moment, that love-it-or-hate-it remix of "You Give Love a Bad Name," I think it'd be a mistake. I mean, Blake's biggest asset all season has been his ability to surprise the viewing audience — so why would he do the one thing everyone's expecting and revisit Bon Jovi week? I'd rather hear him replay Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know," and remind Idol fans that, yeah, he's actually got a strong and lovely singing voice; then, he can apply his patented beatboxing technique on his "contestant's choice" song. By employing that kind of audacious strategy, dude might just have a fighting chance against the effervescent Arizona teen.

But that's just my take. What "greatest hit" would you have Jordin and Blake revisit this week, and why?

blakefanforlife Wed, May 23, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

I personally think that each contestant in the season finale should write their own songs and choose which one fits them better or they like better and sing one of their own songs instead of singing sombbody else's songs. They would probably do better with s aong they wrote than a song from another artist. And if anything goes wrong with the song they only have themselves to blame.

bevfon Wed, May 23, 2007 at 10:51 AM EST

This was the worse season of Idol by far.Lost interest from the very beginning.Guess I'm just "Idoled" out. Belinda was and is the best singer. don't give a hoot who wins now that Belinda is not in the finals

Grammar Smarts Tue, May 22, 2007 at 07:32 AM EST

Bad spelling on this board makes the messages a rough-read.

MM Tue, May 22, 2007 at 06:28 AM EST

They both suck. This season was a joke. I am not a Blake fan but Jordin is so fake you just want to slap the spoiled brat! Given the choice- Go Blake!

Brainiac Tue, May 22, 2007 at 12:25 AM EST

I agree that this has not been a great season all together. The judges deliberately kept mainly boring and untalented singers for the top 24 and retained only a few good ones. They wanted to be able to critiqe people. Last year, when there were so many good ones, Simon couldn't use his acid tongue as much, or at least not as well. I was actually surprised they kept Blake for the top 24. And Sanjaya?????

I think they were trying to avoid having too many Southerners, which is lame, of course.

Bring back Melinda!!! She was BY FAR the best singer. She was actually one of the best singers in all of the AI seasons. She was also articulate, poised, and intelligent. She's going to be so successful - just like Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, or Chris Daughtry.

So in other words, I don't really care what Jordin I-can't-believe-she's-only-seventeen Sparks or Blake spits-in-the-microphone Lewis sing.

emily Mon, May 21, 2007 at 10:49 PM EST

Instead of picking there best they should re do there worst or pick the best of other singers on idol from this year. Or they should just do a song that Sanjaya did complete with his look he was the only interesting singer from this season.

Tara Mon, May 21, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

Slezak, have you ever read MTV Jim Cantiello's Idol recap? He's hilarious!! He reminds me a lot of you. I like reading recaps written by people who are fans of the show. You and him are my favorites.

Gwen Mon, May 21, 2007 at 07:35 PM EST

I don't care what they sing. All I want to know is why Jordin looks like she's five years old in that picture. Wasn't that taken like a couple of weeks ago?! Strange!!

Ann Mon, May 21, 2007 at 07:04 PM EST

I heard through spoilers Blake's song choices, and I'm now convinced he doesn't want to win. Peeps, he's trying to throw the competition.

Everyone sucks/fat/should not have an opinion Mon, May 21, 2007 at 07:02 PM EST

God I get so sick of so many lame-ass comments about so and so is fat or sucks or that everyone else should shut up.
Maybe if all the donkeys braying would shut up, it would be a nice place to discuss the merits of each singer.
I thought last week that Melinda would go. At the beginning of the season, she was far and above the best singer, but Jordin really closed the gap (but only when she did her best). But Mel lacked charisma IMHO.
I always thought Jordin would win cause she has the best chance to be a great pop star in this day&age. Now Blake, he has great imagination and I have liked almost everything he has done... (& I don't want to get in his pants... EWWW! So there..)
I did not think this year was so bad... I mean Sanjaya was lame TO ME.. but obviously somebody liked him. & to rephrase Simon's comment, this is NOT a singing contest, this is a pop star contest. That's why Jordin will win. Great voice/looks/smile/etc

wallawallamama Mon, May 21, 2007 at 06:35 PM EST

Slezak, Slezak, Slezak. How will I survive my days without your Idol musings, your obsession that so closely mirrors mine, your shameless love of (nearly) all things Blake? On this happy/sad Monday, I once again agree with you - no 'Bad Name,' rather something to showcase his sweet vocal stylings. Blake must know the entire 'Songs About Jane' playlist - how about some more Maroon 5? A rockin' 'Harder To Breathe' would have the joint jumpin'!

Doogie Mon, May 21, 2007 at 06:32 PM EST

I think that fat, bloated toad LaKisha should do a comeback appearance with the Fat Boys. They could do the old Fat Boys' song "Can U Feel It". Then they could all kill Blake and cook him over a BBQ spit and eat him. Or shrink his head or something.

o;Neaal500 Mon, May 21, 2007 at 06:24 PM EST

Malinda is STUPID!!!!! I want Blake to win!! Jorden is so sparklely that I hate her. I think Blake should sing I like big butts. Malinda is FAT!!!!!

AMERICAN IDOL IS OVER Mon, May 21, 2007 at 06:24 PM EST

Jordin need to sing " Broken Wing". As for Balke who really acres what he sings he should not have even been in the final two. Thank stupid/stoned Paula for that one. This will be the last year of Idol i watch. This whole season was a BIG FAT JOKE

Scotty Mon, May 21, 2007 at 06:18 PM EST

I actually agree with you on your picks. Though, for Jordin, I Who Have Nothing was her absolute best performance. I am more curious though as to how Blake will handle the typically awful, cliche ridden ballad they are usually given in the finale. I wonder if they'll give him the latitude to change it up like he has all season. And speaking of Blake, people need to give it a rest about him not having a good voice. He's proven multiple times that he isn't just a beat boxer and can sing quite well. Not all singers have to have the power voice to be good.

Crys5002345 Mon, May 21, 2007 at 06:16 PM EST

I think Blake is going to win!!! They should sing any song of there choices. I love American Idol!!!!!!!!!

Crys5002345 Mon, May 21, 2007 at 06:15 PM EST

I think Blake is going to win!!! They should sing any song of there choices. I love American Idol!!!!!!!!!

David Mon, May 21, 2007 at 05:52 PM EST

Blake should sing Time of the Season...I hope that songs makes it onto the Idol CD.

BJPNWTP Mon, May 21, 2007 at 05:26 PM EST

Jordin should win hands down. She is the better of the two.

Allie Mon, May 21, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

Blake should sing Time of the Season for sure...as for Jordin...who cares, it all sounds the same

Corran Mon, May 21, 2007 at 04:41 PM EST

How could Blake not redo the best performance of the season with "You Give Love a Bad Name" but also sing "Somewhere Only We Know" which is still his best vocal to date. I think those two songs would be phenominal and would help him win. For Jordin, she sang her best song already -- I Who Have Nothing. BOO! She shouldn't win. However, even though she will sing Broken Wing, I actually think she should resing I Am a Woman In Love, a great song choice but horrible delivery. If she takes a song she did bad on previously and does phenominal on it the second attempt she could definitely regain her momentum. I dunno, I still feel Blake has an advantage with his performances coming into it than Jordin and deserves to win.

toby Mon, May 21, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

All season long, I've always thought that the perfect song for Jordin is Stacy Lattisaw's "Let Me Be Your Angel." Blake doesn't deserve to shine Jordin, Melinda, or Lakisha's shoes, so the less said about him the better.

monee Mon, May 21, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

Slezak, I wouldn't be too sure that Blake will listen to the Idol rules and sing a song again. He knows that he's not vocally better than Jordin so a surprise or two is his only chance. I think "Chasing Cars" could bring out the same vocal quality as "Somewhere Only We Know" with a different song. As for a beatboxed number...I have no idea, he's been alright about picking those so I'll leave it up to him.

Ana Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:57 PM EST

I agree Blake should also do the Keane song or Time of The Season.
Those two songs show the great voice he really has, so I hope he goes with any of them. Blake really has a great voice, people tend to forget that. Geez!
I am sure he will go with an upbeat number after that and then the cheesy coronation single. BUt oh well, he has to do what he has to do.

What I really can't wait for is for his debut album. I heard some of his PRE AI original work and he is pretty good.
His music will be perfect for Top 40 radio.
That's why I am voting for Blake this year.
I want an idol who is current and can represent on the Billboard charts. Not like Taylor Hicks. I never understood why he won.
Blake will be the next Daughtry.
Go Blake!
I can't wait for his career to start.

JenJen Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:51 PM EST

Michael...where oh where is the interview with Melinda??? EW has interviewed everyone who has gotten kicked off this darn show all season, and it has always been posted the day after the results show. I'm dying here!

Dylan Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

I hope that whatever Blake sings, that he just does it in his underwear.

Dylan Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

I hope that whatever Blake sings, that he just does it in his underwear.

Juan Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:34 PM EST

I am surprised you haven't found Jordin's performance of "Broken Wing" that she performed on America's Most Talented Kids. That was in 2004,

Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:15 PM EST

Both of you are geart. My mom is crazy about you.

daisyj Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

I'm going to go against the flow here and suggest that what they should really do is take a song that they didn't hit a home run on the first time and try and redo it better. The problem with picking their most successful song is that a terrific performance has some sort of magic to it that only exists in the moment, and any attempt to repeat comes off as stale (see, last year, Kat McPhee redoing "Black Horse..." and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"). Besides, we already know they can sing these songs well, what they need is some new high points for the voters to remember. So I think Blake should try and redeem his cover of the gorgeous "When the Stars Go Blue" by hitting all the notes this time, and Jordin should revisit her unmemorable "On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever)" and knock it out of the park.
Not gonna happen, of course, but it should.

ChgoSteve Mon, May 21, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Blake should do "Time of the Season." I don't care what the fat girl does.
Go Blake! Melinda's still the best though.

IdolFan_JP Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:57 PM EST

..."he's [Blake] actually got a strong and lovely singing voice"...MAN that's the funniest thing I've heard in a while! I've really got to call your credibility on that one Slezak. I can understand being nice, but you cross the line when you outright lie. That's all...I'm done.

Kari Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:50 PM EST

I'm not watching - no Melinda - no Idol - done with the show for good

MotownDweller Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

No repeats !!
All new songs for the finale. We already have two very mediocre contestants. At least give us viewers some fresh material.

LLL Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:35 PM EST

Agreed, Jordin should do "Broken Wing". Blake should do "Somewhere Only We Know" or "Time Of The Season" and stay far away from Bon Jovi. That was one of those "moments" you can never re-create. But what he should also do is Blake-ify the AI single as much as they will let him. We already know that that song, whatever it is, isn't likely to suit him, and the song will be totally unknown to us. So *that's* where he should go all out and try to make it his own (assuming the producers don't interfere). As for his personal choice (and they are getting one this year), I'd love to see him do a Robbie Williams song, but I'm not holding my breath. Maybe, just maybe, he'll do one of his originals (some of which are excellent)? That would be a first on Idol, and would put him in the pantheon for sure.

Joe C Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:28 PM EST

Let's see, Jordin singing 'Give me One Reason' and Blake performing 'You give Love a Bad name' sounds good. They should also duet on that classic 'Bye Bye Melinda'....lol.

to chaka Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

what's "tone death"?

kj Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

You know, I loved Taylor, but the only song I listen to from last year is Elliot's Moody's Mood for Love.

Donna Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:14 PM EST

I could totally care less now that Melinda's gone. Whoever wins will no doubt go down in history as the worst AI winner ever (and that includes Taylor Hicks, who really sucked!)

kj Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

Melinda should sing "Sunday Kind of Love"

Mon, May 21, 2007 at 01:06 PM EST

I agree, Chaka.

I started off this season of AI looking forward to hearing Michael's opinions of the shows, which I generally agreed with. But as the season progressed, he was more and more off the mark to the point where I have to wonder if he either has bad taste or has ulterior motives for supporting the people he does. Maybe he just wants to get in Blake's pants like most of the other people who are supporting him.

Trudy Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

They actually make a cute couple. How about a duet?

Stephanie T. Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Blake: "When I get you alone"- Robin Thicke, and "Somewhere Only We Know"- Keane.

Jordin:"Broken Wing" and is it possible for her to do Samantha Sang's "Emotions"? I heard her on the intro during the Bee Gees melody, and she sang it perfectly on key.

Nancy Walker Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:58 PM EST

They can sing whatever they want as long as they do not attempt any music by Journey. Remember Corey Clark? He sang "Open arms." He demolished the song.

Chaka Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

"he's actually got a strong and lovely singing voice"

You lost all credibility with that Slez. Obviously you are in his corner cause you identify with him.....but being totally tone death is ridiculous.

Katie Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

Did everyone forget about Blake's rendition of "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai?? I agree that "Somewhere Only We Know" shows off his voice the best but if he wants to stay away from a ballad I think "Virtual Insanity" is perfect--fits his range really well & gives him a chance to show off the patented scratch stuff which you know he'll have to do this week. As for Jordin, I'm in agreement with everyone else--Tracy Chapman or Martina McBride.

Reality Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

I love the people who complain about other people complaining on a DISCUSSION BOARD. Isn't complaining sometimes part of a discussion? Just because some people don't share your views doesn't mean they don't have the right to express them here. "Nobody", I'm talking to you. Maybe YOU should "GET LOST" if you can't handle different points of view.

Ep Sato Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

Nyla, that's my point. Blake is NOT a novelty act. But he was recently called out by the judges for beatboxing on every song. That's a novelty and it gets old. Blake can sing, but he's got to find songs in his vocal range and has got to bring it without beatboxing every time. 311's a good choice for him, and he should stick to that genre.

Mozz Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

I'm not watching it. No Melinda, No Mozz. but I'm excited to read all the posts and reactions, always something fun to be quoted on here.

Christina Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

They're probably going to have to do 2 redo's each, that's what happened last year. I think Blake could do "You Give Love A Bad Name" but would have to go back and do something older like "Somewhere Only We Know", or "Time of The Season." Jordin needs at least one upbeat song and the Tracy Chapman one was her best. I would chose her Martina McBride song as the second

Brainiac Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Well said, Matt. Bring back Melinda!!!!!!

Lucky7 Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

Blake SHOULD do Keane, but... he said that he never wanted to do that song. It was his 6th choice, and the other 5 didn't get approved. I bet he does his beloved 311. Remember, Blake ain't trying to win it. He's trying to represent.

Lucky7 Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

Ceballos Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

Agree with both of Slezak's choices...Blake's "You Give Love a Bad Name" definitely seemed like a one-time thing.

Also, doesn't Jordin look SO Raven in that photo?

frank Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

jordin should sing 'you'll never walk alone' for all of the religious fanatics and to try to redeem her shrieking version she did earlier.

Nyla Mon, May 21, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

Blake is NOT a novelty act. He can sing and he's obviously been doing something right to get this far in the competition. If you want novelty, look no further than Sanjaya Malakar.

Ep Sato Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

Yeah, Jordin rocked "Broken Wing", and I totally agree no Idol should be allowed to cover their own song.

Blake needs to show us he can sing, so he should go with whatever he got the most props for from the judges for singing. Right now his appeal is the novelty, so the man needs to step up to the plate and launch one that hits the stratosphere if he wants to win.

Im rooting for Jordin, but will give a vote to whichever singer brings it the most this week. Anyone else psyched to see who wins this? I'm anxiously awaiting the show and results already.

Nobody Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

To Matt and other cry babies still bitter over Melinda, GET LOST! This is one of the best finale ever. You don't have to watch it if you don't like it, and we don't want to read your posts whining and complaining and bashing the remaining contestants.

TT Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:48 AM EST

Right now Slezak! Somewhere Only We Know is my favorite Blake performance. But, because the cheesy coronation song is a ballad as well, I'm afraid he won't do two ballads in one night.

Jackie Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:44 AM EST

I agree completely; Blake should do the Keane song. He so blew away the judges by showing that he can actually sing, and that was a huge moment for him. As for Jordin ... is it bad that I can't remember any of her songs off the top of my head? Looking at others' suggestions, I think Tracy Chapman does good. Or that song she did right before the Idol Gives Back show. Everyone seemed to really like that one.

IdolBlake456 Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

I would love to see Blake do "Time of the Season" again. I liked him before that performance, but loooved him after that. Jordin should probably do Broken Wing.

Matt Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:41 AM EST

God, who cares? There's no Melinda. This finale will be boring. And Blake's "actually got a strong and lovely singing voice"?? Sle, have you HEARD Blake sing...?

K Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:40 AM EST

I really loved "when I leave you alone" that Blake did last week. But I think thats probably too fresh in people's minds. Personally, I think that Blake would benefit from doing a more uptempo song since the finale song is going to be a ballad.

K Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:40 AM EST

Mystic Warrior Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:36 AM EST

I have loved every song Blake has sung, and I know I will love any song he sings in the future! GO BLAKE!!! You are the BeatBox of my HEART!!

djm Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

I like Jordin'a take on Tracy Chapman as well. I think Blake should do Keane - to me that was one of his best performances on the show.

Reality Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

Mr. Slezak, you're thinking with your other head if you really think that Blake has "actually got a strong and lovely singing voice." You did give me a good laugh though.

Hurlywood Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

I was a huge fan of Jordin singing "Give Me One Reason" by Tracy Chapman. The performance itself needed a slight upgrade, but I'd like to see her perform it now, after she's grown on the show.

Amber Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:06 AM EST

I think they should sing all new songs, not rehash the old ones. It gets old!
Great sound byte from Dionne.

Maggie Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:05 AM EST

Blake should sing "Semi-Charmed Kind of Life" by 3rd Eye Blind!

Jenn Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:02 AM EST

Blake should do the Keane song or "Time of the Season" again. Jordin will probably do "You'll Never Walk Alone", because Randy told her it was one of the best vocals he'd ever heard on Idol. Even though it was pretty bad. I'd go with "A Broken Wing" if I were her. As for personal choice, Blake NEEDS to sing "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap. I've been waiting for him to pull that one out since the competition started.

Jakeem Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

I'd love to see Blake and Jordin try the horrible original songs that Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee had to sing during last year's "American Idol" finale.

Bonnie Mon, May 21, 2007 at 11:01 AM EST

I'm with you on Jordin singing Broken Wing. I'm a huge Blake fan and if he sang 311, Time of the Season or his you give love remix again I'd be happy.

Razor Mon, May 21, 2007 at 10:52 AM EST

No repeats, no rehashes.

Personally what I would like to see during the next season of Idol is a checklist of song categories that the contestants have to cover during the course of the season--let them do it at their own pace, and make some more difficult (a capella) and some easier (current pop).

I think the idea of having the contestants sing all in the same theme with the celeb judges has gotten stale, and should be replaced with something different next season.

NineDaves Mon, May 21, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

Blake should sing 311 again!
