Which 'Idols' will (and should) Clive Davis sign?

May 25, 2007, 12:50 PM | by Michael Slezak

Categories: 'American Idol', Music, Reality TV, Television

2lakisha_l After five emotionally draining months, American Idol's sixth season is over. (WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH MY LIFE?) And yet, in some ways, the real competition starts now. Over the next few months, BMG's Clive Davis and the folks at 19 Entertainment will be deciding which of the current crop of contestants they'll be signing to record deals. (Last year, they signed winner Taylor Hicks, runner-up Katharine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, and Kellie Pickler, while foolishly passing on Elliott Yamin, who's scoring some pretty impressive numbers with his self-titled indie release; it's No. 20 on Billboard's album chart this week.

Barring some unforeseen revelations about a secret, felony-filled past, this year's top 2 — Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis — ought to land under Clive's wing, and I'd be shocked if popular third-place finisher (and Simon's personal favorite) Melinda Doolittle doesn't get a BMG deal herself. But after those three, the future looks fuzzier. Based on the startling lack of screentime during the Idol finale for popular contestants like LaKisha Jones (pictured), Chris Richardson, Phil Stacey, and Gina Glocksen, I'm going to go out on a limb and bet that Clive & Co. pass on the remaining nine finalists — although even as I write this, I'm overcome with a horrible, sinking fear that they'll try to score a few quick bucks off the Sanjaya phenomenon, despite the fact that there's nothing left of that lemon but a few strips of rind.

Still, I think it'd be a mistake to pass on LaKisha. True, her song choices throughout the season proved that she's got a fairly limited musical imagination, but if she's put in the studio with the right team of writers and producers, I still think she could be a winner on the charts. There's something authentic about Kiki — a warm, funny vibe that's been evident in her post-Idol interviews but never seemed to come through (or got left on the editing-room floor) during her Idol run. Is it so wrong that I have a vision of her debut CD kicking off with a revamped version of Another Bad Creation's "Iesha"? ("LaKiiiiiisha, you are the girl that I never had. But I want to get to know you better...")

Keeping in mind that sometimes, even America can let a chart-topper slip through their fingers (season 5's eighth-place finisher Bucky Covington is now signed to Disney's Lyric Street label and is doing nicely on the country scene), I'd also dig into the semifinal vaults and pick up Sabrina Sloan. C'mon, she's gorgeous, she's talented, and (as she proved on an episode of Idolaty) she's even willing to sing in a cubicle if that's what the public demands. Okay, so clearly I'm biased, but if you were Clive Davis, which season 6 contestants (other than Jordin and Blake) would you sign to a deal, and why?

like i said haley really should have a record deal. also gina gloksen should have a record deal!!thoses two should really have a record deal!! they'ed have songs and albums impacting the charts. if any record company reads this.... do it

Jack Fri, Nov 23, 2007 at 10:34 PM EST

I really think haley should have a record deal!! I can just see her debut album hitting the charts!!

Brandon Mon, Nov 12, 2007 at 09:01 AM EST

Jordin , Blake, Phil, Chris Sligh, and Sabrina Sloan have already signed record deals.

Jordin--JIVE
Blake--ARISTA
Phil--LYRIC STREET
Chris S.--Hasn't been announced
Sabrina--UNIVERSAL MOTOWN

I would personally love to see Chris Richardson get signed. I'm a big fan of his. He has a great recording voice (his studio recordings of "Change The World", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Mayberry", and "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" prove that). He's got great stage presence, he's likeable, and he's got a large fan base behind him. I don't see him being unsigned for much longer.

I would definitely buy an album by: Jordin, Blake, Melinda, Chris R., Phil, Gina, and Sabrina Sloan. They are all great talents and I think that they all have the potential to do very well. I'd buy an album by Haley if I really liked the songs, but I did like her on the show. I wasn't a big fan of either LaKisha or Chris Sligh, but if they put out some decent music, I might buy it.

beth Thu, Aug 9, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

Clive needs to sign Gina...just saw her in Chicago and she commands the stage the way a rocker chick should..I come from the days of solid rock music coming from some great women and Gina can produce that. Why not try to even get a DAUGHTRY type thing going using women instead...we need some hard rocking ladies out there in a hurry...

Diana: I hope your post was meant to be funny, because you have way too many misspelled words for such a short post. Please buy a dictionary ASAP!

diana Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 06:42 PM EST

i love you i had a drem abote you jordin sparks.and i got a magazen of you jordin.

listenclive Thu, Jun 7, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Clive should sign the top three, obviously.
I think they should sign Lakisha too.
Not a personal Chris R. fan but I think he would do real well.
Stefanie deserves another chance. Sure, she made some bad choices but she's been compared to Beyonce, one of the biggest pop stars out there.
Sabrina was robbed. I thought she had atleast top five potential. She should be signed.

tonya Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 10:16 PM EST

these people you all are talking about are not million dollar talent infact i get bored reading their names. sanjaya is magic the kind of magic that hasnt emerged for years its like we have been ina tranc and he kissed us and we have awakened. wow wow wow

venonad Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 11:06 AM EST

Clive won't sign Chris Richardson, all the PTB at idol don't know who he is. But as the most prolific and talented songwriter in the group, I predict major success for the boy.
The Guns, oh my

bart Tue, Jun 5, 2007 at 06:56 AM EST

haley haley haley
shes got an amazing recording voice (check out her AI6 studio recordings)...and she has the whole pop vibe - she'll do great

Kerry Sun, Jun 3, 2007 at 01:51 AM EST

Phil Stacey all the way!! He deserves a record contract... i would love to see him in country at first, then make a gospel album... that boy can sing.. hands down best male vocal on this season!

Ron Mexico Fri, Jun 1, 2007 at 01:11 AM EST

This dress would make an excellent test pattern or splendid table cloth. I would give her 50$ for it.

yellehs2 Thu, May 31, 2007 at 01:25 AM EST

ok, now that we have given our opinion, will you keep us updated on who DOES get a contract and with whom? Thanks

Javiera Wed, May 30, 2007 at 06:06 PM EST

I truely believe Chris Richardson has got what it takes to make an amazing recording artists. Just by listening to the studio version of "Mayberry", "Wanted Dead or Alive" and, of course "Change the World", you know what a great artist he is. And I also agree that the contestants did not have enough stage time at the Idol Finale.

Ella Wed, May 30, 2007 at 02:44 AM EST

Lakisha, Melinda, Jordin and Blake all deserve the chance! I also think that maybe some other runner ups will get a chance!

lydia mingo Tue, May 29, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

C. Davis should sign Jordin, melinda, keshia and blake
Top 4

Sanjayas #1 FAN Tue, May 29, 2007 at 06:47 PM EST

if Sanjaya doesn't get a contract then i'm never going to watch another american idol again. EVER. i also really hate that stupid crying girl who ovbiously really just wanted attention. SHES A POSER TO THE FANJAYA NATION!!!!!!!

Supermarth Tue, May 29, 2007 at 06:13 PM EST

MELINDA so far and away deserves it!!!
BLAKE is really brave and original, of course I want a record deal for him.
I couldn't believe when the judges pick PHIL to top 24, but now I have to admit, he really can sing!!!

yellehs2 Tue, May 29, 2007 at 02:50 PM EST

I am reading rumors that Jordin and Melinda have a contract (of course I know Jordin is a given) with Clive but nothing about Blake. Does he have one also since he was runner up?

temple dimkpa Ineh Tue, May 29, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

It's a mistake to underestimate Sanjaya;a terrible
mistake indeed. No other contestant was able to sustain attention more than Sanjaya. He had that 100% all the time. It was curiosity mixed with admiration, and Sanjaya was effortlessly in the midst of it. Sanjaya is a phenomenon indeed; he pitched the Republicans against the Democrats and confused the independents. He silently blurred the lines between whites and blacks, male and female, rich and poor, good and evil, up and down, old and young. And left billions around the world confused and yet gasping for more. There are things, in fact many things that only the one-and-only
Sanjaya malakar could do, especially with his hair.Sign him to a record deal please. I'm a Nigerian in Sao Paulo

Chris Richardson is interesting and I liked his voice enough to pick up his album. If he does songs like "Don't Speak", "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying", and "Geek In the Pink" (Awesome Performance!!), then I think he would be a hit.

Sara Tue, May 29, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

I would never buy a Lakisha or Melinda CD.

However I WOULD purchase Blake, Jordin, Chris Richardson, Chris Sligh, or Haley Scarnato. That's just the way it goes, and my fabulous friends agree!! :)

idolobsessedugh! Tue, May 29, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

Love this EW site. Nice job! Just found it this season.

Jordin- great raw talent/qualities etc. Needs alot of molding. Teach her to dance will you?

Blake- Most refreshing- would buy his music. Everyone else is singin' someone else's songs. Most contemporary and will resonate most w/ the core music demographic.

Melinda- powerhouse voice- strangely boring as Simon said. Doesn't resonate w/ core music group as much. Will never be a HUGE act. Couldn't see me buying her record or seeing her in concert.

I loved Sabrina to begin with. Agree she'll get signed our should try out again. We never really got to see her.

Auriana Tue, May 29, 2007 at 10:24 AM EST

I might buy an album by Gina or Blake. That's about it really. Not for lack of talent...Melinda is amazing, just not my kind of music.

Made Tue, May 29, 2007 at 09:23 AM EST

Mike as usual couldn't agree more. My all time favourites are Melinda, Fantasia and Elliott. I was also very disappointed that Sabrina didn't make the top 12. Also think Lakisha, Phil and Gina will land with record deals as well.

Christy Tue, May 29, 2007 at 09:08 AM EST

Clive would be a fool if he didnt give a contract to Blake he is #1 all the way, also Mindy she has the right stuff baby!!!!

HEY Deane Tue, May 29, 2007 at 08:08 AM EST

What warp zone are you in? They can't 'get rid' of Jordin...she won.
Duhhhhh.

Strepsi Tue, May 29, 2007 at 01:23 AM EST

When Blake does his album it should be hop hop. You know how on those old school hip hop albums there's a group member who just jumps around and says C'mon! Yeah! What? That should be CHRIS RICHARDSON. Pumping his elbow. In a tank top and short shorts. That is my vision.

Deanne Mon, May 28, 2007 at 12:09 PM EST

Melinda & Blake
GET RID OF JORDIN!

Jim Mon, May 28, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

Sanjaya won't get signed.

Well, maybe for some birthday parties. (as long as it's not more than $20)

An Idea Mon, May 28, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

Lakisha: Don't wear bold prints. You are too large for them. Wear softer prints and plain colored clothing.

Jose Mon, May 28, 2007 at 05:14 AM EST

Lakisha, Lakisha, Lakisha! If Blake, and Melinda are givens, Lakisha is absolutely the one I'm hoping to hear soon. I agree, the girl has personality and acting chops...did anyone else see her do a fake interview on "The Best Week Ever"? She was hilarious. And when she hits that low note of hers that seems to just rumble from withinin her she gives me chills and makes me sit up and pay attention. No one else did that did year, well except Blake but for entirely different reasons.

Dulce Mon, May 28, 2007 at 02:29 AM EST

Now that the season is over, the intangibles will come into play more than ever, meaning, it'll take more than a good voice from here on out. They play by the same rules as everyone else now. That being said, I agree with Slezak. Davis will sign Jordin, Blake, and Melinda just off the steam of the show alone. I think he'll take Jordin to pop, obviously, Melinda to R/B/soul (modest seller), but I have a nasty feeling he wants Blake to go the way of Maroon5/Robin Thicke. Blake was phenomenal during these numbers and really really looked right off of MTV during them. I'll bet money Blake is going to end up far far away from his electronica home.

melissa Sun, May 27, 2007 at 12:03 PM EST

In my opinion the first person to be signed should be Melinda Doolittle, then Lakisha, then Blake. While i would buy and listen to ANYTHING that Melinda sings I hope that she does as Randy suggested and incorporate some of the rock vibe into her choices.

it's all about HALEY Sat, May 26, 2007 at 10:48 PM EST

Yes, we need a HALEY CD!! Love that girl. Hot look, smooth voice, great performer! She's got it all and was very underrated! Her CD (I Think) will be of the Fergalicious vein and with her hot look will top the charts. Can't wait!!! Melinda has the best voice but HALEY really is the most commercial of the bunch!! Watch her rise to the best of season 6's finalists -- just watch!

Kay Sat, May 26, 2007 at 09:49 PM EST

Maybe the reason Clive is pushing Daughtry so much is b/c his cd is GREAT! If he came anywhere near my home for a concert I would go in a heartbeat. I hear Elliot is doing good but I just never cared for him when he was on the show. I will for sure buy Blake's cd -he's been my fav for a while. As for the others it just depends on what kind of music they record - you need more than a pretty loud voice to be successful IMO - which is why I never really was a huge fan of Melinda.

I think Phil was very underrated by the judges - I think he actually would have a good rock voice. Hope he does well. I never really cared for Chris R. that much or Haley. As for Sanjaya I think he really does have a nice voice but it needs to mature some more I think. I wish them all well though.

I liked Taylor last year but just don't like the type of music he sings - however i also think Clive really dissed him at the finale and that just wasn't cool in my book.

Taratova Sat, May 26, 2007 at 09:17 PM EST

Well, I really didn't have anything invested in caring who won this year. I got my Idol and it is Mr. Elliott Yamin. Idol stopped for me after Elliott. Yes , I watched for five seasons and picked someone but never really was that impressed as I am with Elliott's style and voice.. Clive didn't sign Elliott but he now has the freedom to create what he wants and that says alot. Elliott is doing fine and I am a lifetime fan.

Elliott's voice is always fresh no matter how much I listen to his CD. Elliott is magic!!

Monroe Sat, May 26, 2007 at 07:42 PM EST

FYI EW, Sanjaya and Jordin are the only 2 idols this year that is already signed to CAA-and their agent is the same agent to Kellie Clarkson, Simon Fuller and CARRIE UNDERWOOD...so you do the math. Sanjaya is already signed to 19E and they aren't foolish enough lik the other dumb pundits to pass on the opportunity to sign sanjaya. He is already a PHENOM and HUGE OVERSEAS. Sanjaya is and always will be the American Idol of this season. People can't seem to get enough him as seeing his name is always in the media.

Danielle Sat, May 26, 2007 at 04:55 PM EST

Sanjaya!
He's already been bought by 19E, whether you like it or not.
He's solid gold! $$$
And he can sing, but he has never really sung much in his prefered genre of R&B and jazz.
We'll see....

Brainiac Sat, May 26, 2007 at 01:14 PM EST

Thaks, djm. Simon does have a tendency to exaggurate his money-making abilities.

As for the allegations that Clive Davis and AI are crooked, I ain't surprised. We don't know what actually happens with the votes that go through. There are rumors floating around that Jordin's father had known the judges for years and that Jordin herself had ties to Coca-Cola - a major AI sponsor. And I was always wondering why Taylor wasn't in the spotlight more than he is. I thought that maybe he wasn't popular, so he wasn't getting a lot of media attention. But maybe because of his conflicts with the record label, they don't want to help him out. Clive's dig at Taylor at the finales was a low blow, if you ask me.

Russian River Man Sat, May 26, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

You all need to download the mp3's from AI and listen to several of the finalists again, there are some amazing studio recordings that show off their voices.... meaning Blake, Melinda (Wow!), Kiki, Chris R, and even Phil. The all will get recording contracts even if it isn't with the omni-potent 19

Kate Sat, May 26, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

I stopped watching AI last season as well when Elliott was voted off. In retrospect, it was the best thing that could have happened to him. I think a lot of Elliott fans left AI in the dust. Clive should never have passed on Elliott but I for one am glad he did!!

Tondee Sat, May 26, 2007 at 10:15 AM EST

I hope Melinda passes on Evil C and gets a REAL deal with someone who'll let her "rip it up" her OWN way (like Elliott! wow! what a great CD)...I think I'd pass on most of the others...
I do love Phil...I think he got beat up by the judges too unfairly...he should make something gospel/country/classic rock...he'd do well, hair or no hair! (bunch of whiney-butt complainers!)
Not too much REAL talent comes out of this show...Kelly C., Carrie U., Elliott...maybe Daughtry, though I think he's been over-hyped - time will tell...Fantasia and JenHud have found their niches...Clay's okay (if you like plain vanilla, but I LOVE chocolate-Elliott!), once he (Clay) gets to make a CD that really suits him, with some fresh material... just sayin'...

Terri Sat, May 26, 2007 at 10:02 AM EST

I stopped watching AI after Elliott was voted off. I attended his concert in Alexandria and he was awesome. I am so proud of him, and I wish him well. I can't stop listening to his CD!

Ejay Sat, May 26, 2007 at 09:22 AM EST

Worst season ever. I stopped watching regularly after the semis but I caught a few highlights. This show is definitely going downhill. It's more a reality show than a singing competition these days.

Holly Sat, May 26, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

I don't get why people have to compare Sabrina and Stephanie. Just because they were the two black girls that didn't get their auditions shown? Vocally they are very different, and they both deserve record deals. Both of them got out way too early. Especially Sabrina, who was pretty much screwed by the whole process. I hope they both do great and expose just how messed up AI can be sometimes. It just shows you how much influence editing and the producers have over the voting public.

BJ Sat, May 26, 2007 at 08:34 AM EST

Where was Fantasia in the finale? They were all there except for her? Just curious!

Cathy Sat, May 26, 2007 at 07:28 AM EST

A few random thoughts:
Jordin is talented but just not unique IMO -- probably won't buy her CD.
Blake is refreshing -- I may buy his CD if it's good.
I LOVE Melinda but will wait and see what type of music she records.
Lakisha, again, is talented but not particularly unique.
I liked Phil from the start -- agree he needs hair -- also see him in country or lead vocalist for a contemporary Christian group.
Chris Rich -- I was never impressed with this guy's voice. Just not for me.
I could go on, but none of the other contestants from this season seemed particularly memorable.
As for past seasons, it's my understanding that while Clay did cancel his management contract (19M) he's still signed with Clive for a recording contract and that's why his last CD was so craptastic.
Elliott rules, IMO, and in retrospect I'm grateful that Clive (Evil C) did NOT sign him. He's doing extremely well for someone with no big-budget backing. He's got talent and charisma and I wish him well.

Sat, May 26, 2007 at 12:17 AM EST

i believe Melinda will get a contract no matter what. Although I still believe she should have won. I also like Lakeisha, Phil,Chris S, and Gina. I also think Stephanie would be wonderful.

Idol Fan Fri, May 25, 2007 at 10:13 PM EST

We need a CD of the musical stylings of the lovely HALEY SCARNATO -- really! She was underrated as a singer and performer and did a very nice job to place a very respectable 8th place. I agree she will make a great recording artist.

vicki Fri, May 25, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

Elliot not signing with Clive Davis is and was a blessing in desguise for Elliot. Go Elliot your CD is great!

dbanimate Fri, May 25, 2007 at 06:51 PM EST

I dont think Elliott is too broken up about not being signed with Clive. I think it was on Idolatry where he said, because he is Indie, it doesnt matter if he sells 10 records or 10 million, there is no pressure and he is just excited that he got to make the kind of record he wanted to make. Amen! And look how well its doing, even without big bucks promotion, yay!

Denise Fri, May 25, 2007 at 05:29 PM EST

Clive, 19E, and Simon have been salivating over Chris Rich since day one. I would be floored if they didn't scoop him up. He is going to a big success, not mention more versitile than Blake, and more contempory than the rest; like Daughtry he'll fit right into today.
19E will offer the top 6 contracts, imo.

Truth Fri, May 25, 2007 at 05:25 PM EST

Anon: Excellent! I don't know how anyone can think that Idol is not fixed. Sometimes their fix does not work because of all the publicity surrounding Idol. Taylor Hicks won because they could not make it look any other way;the outcry would have been astonishing to say the least.

Ryan Seasick Fri, May 25, 2007 at 05:06 PM EST

Melinda is a given.

KiKi: with the right direction (management, musical, style, etc.) she can be successful. She's go the pipes.

The others should not give up but need some further development and that's their responsibility.

Fingers Crossed Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:43 PM EST

Assuming Blake and Melinda are a lock (although I can't see myself purchasing either of those discs), I've got my fingers crossed for Phil and Kiki to get a great deal -- even if not with Clive. My season 5 faves were Elliott (far and away) and Bucky so maybe I've got a shot at calling this...

Stacey Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

Now that it's finally over, I can safely say that Sabrina Sloan should have won this season. She was really shafted on the whole screen time thing. I saw her when she was in Hairspray, and she was freaking great. If she had gotten a third of the screen time Jordin did, she would have been right up there with her. Like Randy said, "America got that one wrong!" But, I'm with you Michael, I think she'll get a deal if she hasn't already gotten one. And it's possible that missing the finals will work in her favor since she won't have to be compared to that mediocre group and go on what will undoubtedly be the worst tour ever. I'm sure we haven't heard the last of her. Anyone who has seen her sing in person can testify that only about a tenth of her talent came through on AI. Look out!

Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:34 PM EST

After researching Clive Davis today, I think it's best that none of them sign with him. Did you all know Clive Davis and Radio Payola is being Investigated by the FCC and FBI for kickbacks to radio stations and DJ's to play their records. Yep!And they are dissing Taylor Hicks and pushing Chris Daughtry for some reason. Maybe because Taylor is his own MAN. I don't know. Rumor has it that Taylor is trying to get out from under Clive. Clive Davis signed that song of Daughtry's "home" last season before AI season 5 was even over. It was supposed to have been his exit song. Hummmmmmmmm! AI and Clive Davis are looking alittle crooked here. This is why you don't hear Taylor's songs on the radio as much as you do Daughtry's. They are not advertising Taylor but are pushing Daughtry's CD's. Did everyone know that Daughtry's concert at the Tabernacle in Atlanta Georgia had awful reviews back in April and there were only 26 ticket holders? Those people left before he was done. I am done with AI.

Maybe what Elliott wanted to do is what Clive thought would be risky and unfamiliar or become mainstream not sell millions like Daughtry. E did sing mostly obscure songs but his voice just works for every genre possible be it popular or not. I hope to get to the truth.

justin Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

I know that, H1. That's why I mentioned her. I'm seeing Elliot June 8th. I hope to ask him why Clive didn't sign him. Who knows what his music would've sounded like if he won. After reading everyone's comments, I'd like to get the straight dope.

haley lover Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

Why, Haley of course! She has a pretty voice and is marketable with a capital "M". Even Diana Ross said she had a real "studio voice." Check out her smooth voice on her studio recordings of "Missing You" and "True Colors" on the Idol website. Laugh all you will, but she's got singing chops and is a great entertainer. In fact, for all the flack she got for her hot pants and halters, look at the current top 40 gals like Carrie Underwood and they are all wearing the same outfits (if they can pull it off). Other than Haley's, Melinda's will be the only CD I buy -- Melinda got robbed of the title she so deserved!

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:27 PM EST

Yes, I'm kinda biased, but the sisters were in full effect this season. Hey, Mr. Davis (or somebody), sign Sabrina Sloan, Stephanie Edwards, Lakisha Jones, and of course, Miss Mindy Doo! You will rule the R&B, hip-hop, and pop charts from now until 2011 if you do.

JANICE Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

ABSOLUTELY SABRINA!Can't believe AI rolled over this talent like they did! Hopefully Clive is a little smarter and will snap her up! Of course he'll snap Melinda.Sorry Clive...Jordon's not gonna do it for ya.

H1 Fri, May 25, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

Jordin (because she has to), Melinda and Phil. Let Blake go elsewhere and do whatever with artistic freedom. Forget the rest - if it is meant to be then they will find other avenues and if not then 'America has voted'.

Justin - Jordin was only auditioning in Seattle 'cos she got rejected previously. She had to find another way in. Seattle is a loooong way from her home.

Oh, and EW, I'm still eagerly waiting for the Melinda exit interview/Q&A ...

justin Fri, May 25, 2007 at 03:56 PM EST

Clive should try and sign Melinda, Lakisha, Stephanie and Sabrina as one girl group. How's this for a name? Molasses. SaMe LaSt. LaSt SaMe. P.S. Between Jordin, Blake, the Songwriting Contest Winners, Apolo Anton Ohno and the Geography Bee Winner, Seattle should be having the Best Week Ever. Are you reading this VH1?

Dio_K Fri, May 25, 2007 at 03:50 PM EST

Definitely Melinda! I hope Clive D rues the day he let Elliott go. (love the chance to use "rues the day".) He looked and sounded fantastic last week. Other than Melinda and the top 2, I don't have any great desire to hear the rest on the radio. Sorry, Michael, I've never been able to "get" LaKisha. I'm willing to take your word for it that her "cold-odd" behavior was editng, rather than real, but I never had a chance to see it.

Kim Fri, May 25, 2007 at 03:26 PM EST

Lakisha could be good on Broadway as well. She certainly has the pipes, and in interviews she's indicated she enjoys acting.

djm Fri, May 25, 2007 at 03:21 PM EST

To Brainiac -
I can't answer as to whether or not he gets a portion of every Idol contestant but I would have to doubt it. Once their contract is over my guess is that they go their seperate ways. As for Elliott - I don't think he wanted to sign with Clive & Co - something didn't click between them. He didn't get picked up by anyone - he recorded his CD on his own and only signed a distribution deal with a company to help release his cd. The fact that he didn't have a major lable backing him with marketing and advertising and yet his cd is doing so well is really cool.

As for the person that suggested they sign Melinda and have her work with Missy Elliott - that is the biggest complaint I have heard from people about Fantasia. They hate that she went into the Hip/hop genre and didn't stick closer to jazz/standards/AC - she lost a lot of people that way. I think the same would happen to Melinda if she went down the hip/hop path.

Glass Fri, May 25, 2007 at 03:19 PM EST

First of all, let's give a big hand to Mr Slezak for an enjoyably readable account of each week's Idol's events. I may not agree with his personal choices but he is extremely funny in his accounts and almost always gets it right smack down.

Having said that, I'd say this to Melinda - please don't accept any recording offer from a mega-producer who will probably mold you into a money maker and rely less on your obvious talents. Like someone said here there are still fans who like great ole singing that only -- and only -- Melinda can do so well.

Kiki should have a record contract. Period. Her range is awesome and if the material is right, can easily outclass Jordin. Quick someone get Stephanie Edwards a deal too since she has proven in those very few weeks before she got voted out that she is much better than Jordin and whose musical gifts are too subtle for many to notice. Phil Stacey -- best voice among the male contestants, hands down. Sabrina Sloan will be great too!

Karen Fri, May 25, 2007 at 03:16 PM EST

Melinda! Melinda! and Melinda! oh, did I mention Melinda?!

Out East Fri, May 25, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Melinda, Lakisha, Stephanie Edwards, and Brandon Rogers. Those four have the best voices and most compelling personalities (including Blake).

"Men want her and women want to be her..." OMG.. stop that man--he's got a HYPERBOLE GUN!!!

Mark Anders Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:55 PM EST

Alaina Alexander is hot and could be the next Ashlee Simpson pop star. men want her and women want to be her.

eric murphy Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:49 PM EST

Sundance Head already got signed by Universal. It's just a matter of time. I think it's going to be Blake and Melinda. That's it.

Razor Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

Thank God this season is over... the only thing left is to get Jordin's single, "Now This Is Like The Night Of My Moment (That Makes You Proud)," or whatever the hell this crap-fest is called, on and off the charts as quickly as possible. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

MindyM Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:30 PM EST

I always thought Melinda was the best, hands down, no doubt about it. I know she will get a record deal, if she hasn't already been signed by BMG. She can sing anything! She could have the biggest success of them all. There are people out here who actually do like great singing. I would love to see Phil get some kind of record deal, whether it's country or pop. He was coming into his own and got better and better every week, but he does need hair. I always thought Stephanie was better than Jordin and never had a chance to show her stuff. Sabrina Sloan should have made it into the finals, but the field was too crowded. Lakisha could do a gospel/r&b cd, but she MUST have someone choose the songs for her. She doesn't have a clue, also an attitude change would be nice. The others don't really measure up, as far as I am concerned. Go Melinda! You are the best and I loved every minute of listening to you. You show them who the REAL Idol is!

Melinda's Q&A? Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

Slezak, EW never did an exit interview or Q&A with Melinda! What's up with that?

Snsetblaze Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:23 PM EST

Of course, Melinda will get signed.

Phil Stacey should get signed and do country but probably not by Clive. I thought he was the strongest male voice, and also most improved of the contestants and sounded the best of the guys during the finale. He genuinely took the judge's advice and improved himself.

Gina Glocksen and Chris Sligh will get signed on an indie label or front bands that will be signed.

lala1215 Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

Kiki should def be signed but she will need guidance and coaching- girl lists Kelly Clarkson as her fav female singer and noone for male (WAAH?- Not even Ruben?) If it was left to her she would do covers of AI's greatest hits.

I also can see Phil on the country scene- they seem to embrace AI members (Carrie, Pickler, Bucky,etc..)

Tamara Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

Bite your tongue, Monee!

Just Me Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

Well, if Lakisha does not get a recording contract, she can make a few hundred dollars on this dress. It looks perfect for a hot air baloon.

L Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:03 PM EST

Well, you've already mentioned the three obvious ones (There are rumors that Blake and Melinda have already been approached about record deals; Jordin's a given by being the winner). I would have thought Clive would sign Chris to do some JT/Maroon 5 stuff but I don't see why he would now that Blake has been doing some of that (and happens to know the members of Maroon 5, which is how he got to perform their songs in the first place). Lakisha could get signed but I feel like whatever Clive may have had is served by Melinda and Fantasia. I bet Phil (hopefully), Lakisha and Chris get a deal elsewhere.

134 Freeway Fri, May 25, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

After the top 2, Melinda should get signed and do a great r&b/jazz thing. Someone will do well with Sanjaya as the new David Cassidy/Leif Garrett. The rest of the pack...I just don't see it, there is an ever-crowded field of similar talent. It is great to see Yamin doing well and if Taylor Hicks gets some better material, he could still soar in the future. And they really don't need Clive Davis...

Monee Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:58 PM EST

slezak, while I know that Clive will probably sign Blake (and I almost hope he does), I can't help but worry about the creative chokehold Clive is going to place on the guy. After reading David Karger's feature on Kelly Clarkson, I'm worried now, more than ever about the fate of my favorite Idol contestant this season. We might get an album full of Jesse McCartney leftovers...

TammyFan Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:57 PM EST

I would sign Tammy Gosnell. She never got a fair shake and I loved her Janis Joplin, ragged style.

Tim Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:56 PM EST

If I were any of the top 10, I wouldn't want a contract with Clive. The kids would have more freedom creatively and from a management standpoint. The smartest thing Blake could do is get a great attorney who could get him out of his contract, just like Clay did.

Duderonomy Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:52 PM EST

As others have pointed out, post-Idol success is elusive for R&B artists. Both Ruben and Fantasia were popular enough to win, but their debut CD sales were good-not-great by Idol standards. That argues against signing LaKisha. (And, in my opinion, Fantasia has more accessible warmth and charm than Lakisha, so those attributes clearly only go so far in selling R&B music to the Idol audience.)

On a related note: I had forgotten how good Ruben is. I thought he was the star of the finale, but he's considered a disappointment sales-wise.

yellehs2 Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:44 PM EST

Definately Melinda (who probably has producers beating down her door and the phone ringing 24/7) and LaKeshia. I liked Stephanie & Sabrina also, but the market is getting crowded. How would they stand out? But Blake (sigh) I can't WAIT for his CDd!

APFN Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

Melinda, Chris Richardson, and Phil Stacey

Gwen Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

Oh yeah, Ceballos. LaKisha should definitely allow someone to do the song-pickin' for her. She should start with "Smile."

Ceballos Fri, May 25, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

Other than the top 3, I'd definitely give Lakisha a deal. I'd argue she had a better voice than Jordin, but came off as completely humorless and had little charisma when she was performing...that and she was also the worst.song picker.ever.

Also, I'd give Phil Stacey a deal and make him do a country album. I'll always believe he had the strongest male voice in the finals. Period.
