Britney's back... Yay?

May 3, 2007, 01:06 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Britney Spears

Brit_l After a three-year absence from performing, Britney Spears is back — looking and lip-synching better than ever. Over the last two days, she's popped up on stages in San Diego (pictured) and Anaheim, Calif., shimmying her way through old hits with the help of a few backup dancers. (They're expected to hit the House of Blues in L.A. tonight before heading to Vegas on Sunday.) Clearly, the gigs are successful as a publicity stunt — warranting "COMPLETE COVERAGE" on one entertainment website and a commentary questioning the sanity of her fans, who spent $125 to see a 15-minute set, on another — but have they made anyone think Spears is relevant in today's pop world, which casually replaced her with the Pussycat Dolls while she was away?

This isn't meant as a bash-Britney post. I own her greatest hits; I saw her at the MGM Grand in Vegas years ago (for a male friend's 30th birthday, but at least O-Town opened). I just think there's got to be a better way to make a comeback — and that we need to help her think of it. My plan: If you insist on making these shock-and-awe club appearances, give people a 15-minute Britney-ized ballet. No lip-synching — just dancing. Doesn't even have to be your own songs. Find a choreographer that uses your body to tell a story that actually says something (other than "Where's my pole?"). When choreography is as uninspired as this "Toxic" routine, people mind if you're lip-synching. But when you give them a production and a storyline, they remember that no one comes to hear Britney sing, they come to see her move.

Do what you do best, Britney. Get us to remember that you're creative on the dance floor, and we might be eager to hear what dance tracks you've whipped up in the studio.

So that's where Big Bird has gone. I was wondering what happened to him.

Ouch! Sat, May 5, 2007 at 09:21 PM EST

She looks like someone stepped on her foot. Oh dang it! "My foot is killing me." Right after the mishap her guts rolled right out. Next week she will get a call from Sports Illustrated

IHaveVertigo Fri, May 4, 2007 at 02:56 PM EST

Where is the stylist telling her that she shouldn't wear a tight skirt that squeezes her stomach fat? And I really don't think it has much to do with having kids-- most women return to their pre-pregnancy weight by their child's first birthday-- so she can't use that excuse. We've all seen the pictures of her eating junk food, if she is serious about this comeback, she has got to eat better. Also, I agree with the post about doing something acoustic-- this whole look and the sound you know the CD's going to be is so 2000-- everyone's moved on, it's time for Britney to move on as well.

"Britney is no Madonna." Why would she want to be? She has enough troubles with her own life as it is.

Betty Fri, May 4, 2007 at 08:41 AM EST

Britney needs to realize that she is no longer a teenager. No woman looks completely the same after having children, but she can exercise and still have a fit body that looks good and feels great! Unfortunately, Britney just checked out mentally and we can see the results, not just in her figure, but her behavior; which at this point in her life is more important than her shaking her bon bons. She needs to shape up (mentally) for her children. I hope that soon she will come to realize this.

paul Fri, May 4, 2007 at 08:38 AM EST

maybe if we all ignore her she will go away. its up to us!

Joe C Fri, May 4, 2007 at 08:06 AM EST

Ya know, I may be starting World War III here, and admittedly I've never been a Madonna fan, but to me she's never 'reinvented' herself; she's always been the same. Okay, Madonna fans, sling your arrows my way, but that's how I feel.

e4ia Fri, May 4, 2007 at 01:36 AM EST

OK...after having 2 kids and letting herself go for a couple of years, she just needs to face the facts that she will never again have the body she had when she made "Slave 4 U". But that doesn't mean that she can't still look sexy if she wanted to. It just means she can't do it wearing a bikini top and(ugh)a denim skirt (?!?). For god's sake, put a shirt on, get some fashion tips from ANYONE other than who you are getting it from now and use your unfiltered singing voice that I've heard many times (for proof that she can sing when she wants to, check out her live performance of "Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" from SNL a few years back). Only then, can we even CONSIDER a comeback.
I mean...a denim skirt....REALLY?!?

Danny Rich Fri, May 4, 2007 at 01:03 AM EST

Britney was never a great singer, mediocre at best. I think that her fans are quite loyal and will still buy her music, which isn't very good; but at least she will have that to fall back on.
It can't be the money because she is loaded. So she must really miss shaking her cellulite.

Trudy Fri, May 4, 2007 at 12:42 AM EST

Sorry, but she does not look better than ever. That line must have been to make her feel good. Her guts are hanging out. In the words of a then young Cher, "before you primp you gotta pump." 24 hour fitness Britney.

Indianafan Thu, May 3, 2007 at 08:01 PM EST

I hope Britney comes back. Yes she is no Madonna, but she does have some good songs. I think she just needs new management and better advice.

Thu, May 3, 2007 at 06:54 PM EST

One big difference between Madonna and Britney is that Madonna wasn't above taking voice lessons when she knew she needed them (for "Evita")--and she started taking guitar lessons, too. Britney would never, ever do either of these things, because she doesn't feel she needs to. She thinks just dancing around in slutty clothes is all she needs to do to get and keep fans, but that DOES get old eventually, because performers like that are a dime a dozen. As Mandi points out, the Pussycat Dolls have replaced her--and at least they can really dance!
Oh, and Jessica Simpson is NOT a legit movie star. Her career is essentially over, for the same reason as Brit's--she cared much more about being famous than about doing good work.

Liz Thu, May 3, 2007 at 06:40 PM EST

Give it up, Britney. You're no Madonna.

Tim Thu, May 3, 2007 at 06:16 PM EST

Exactly what kind of comeback are people expecting? Has anyone ever accused Britney of having any musical talent whatsoever? Is that the point? Do her fans actually expect a 'live' vocal? Her management used to at least have the good taste to buy solidly written songs for her to croak over. Her dancing, um, skills don't even approach that of a Madonna or Janet Jackson, both of whom made very little genuine talent go a very long way. Two more performers that are no less shallow and surface than Britney.

Ep Sato Thu, May 3, 2007 at 04:51 PM EST

Stephanie is correct. Although her attempted comebacks (and later Playboy centerfolds) were never as low as then rival Tiffany got.

JR, I don't think Britney's good enough to sing opera, but good enough for pop. And Jessica's "legit" in the sense that she's not doing porno. The point is that Jessica and Christina found ways to make money by subtle image changes, wheras it seems Brit's trying to do exactly the same thing she used to.

That said, this northern lights is pretty good. If you live in DC drop me a line and we can have some brownies while watchin' some 30 rock ;)

Stephanie Thu, May 3, 2007 at 04:43 PM EST

Chuck:

Oh not Gibbson. lol! Her "Anything ia Possible" video goes down as the worst comeback video ever.

Perez Milton Berle Thu, May 3, 2007 at 04:23 PM EST

Wow, nice fat rolls around the belly there, saddlebags! I thought the news report said that she had lost all of that fat. Not from where I'm looking, kiddies. Yikes.

To expand on what Bertie said, she not only looks like a stripper, but an old, broken-down, drug-addicted stripper in rural Lousiana.

Stephen Thu, May 3, 2007 at 04:17 PM EST

I think Brit could make a good comeback if she puts out an album a-la "B'Day." S I feel she could totally rock tracks like Freakum Dress. I'm tired of her songs like "Overprotected" and "Outrageous" and "My Perrogative." Have fun girl!!!

Chuck U Farley Thu, May 3, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

Actually, Ms. Spears just announced that she'll be joining the Debbie Gibson tour bus soon enough.

Megan Thu, May 3, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

Britney Spears is a joke, period. Some advice: dress more appropriately. The stage is one thing, but walking down the street wearing a see thru dress is trashy. Stop making video recordings of yourself "addressing the world" that insult your fans, your family and your management - keep your private life to yourself. make a solid record; this might involve taking singing lessons. actually sing at a show once in awhile. perhaps therapy and medication might help as well.

DW Thu, May 3, 2007 at 03:54 PM EST

Kewl picture of Satan ... where'd ya get it?

Eric Thu, May 3, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

wow, that was like a high school talent show lip synch, a BAD high school talent show lip synch.

JoJoJo Thu, May 3, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

"most people want her back". Yeah, only so we can laugh our butts off at how desperate she is for attention. She's a trainwreck. We are repulsed, but can't turn away, not in admiration, but in in amazement at how low she will go to stay in the spotlight.

JR Thu, May 3, 2007 at 03:05 PM EST

Ep Sato: Jessica Simpson a LEGIT movie star??!! Britney good enough "singer"??!! I want some of what you're smoking.

Stephanie T. Thu, May 3, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

Belly Shmelly at least she is not afraid to go out there and show what a semi skinny woman looks like. Don't lie. Like we have all the time in the world to go to Jack Lalane. Now if she looked liked Big Mamma in that get up then that's taking it to the extreme. Still I think that she should just go to college, get a job and watch over her kids. Now's the time to retire.

Ep Sato Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:59 PM EST

Agreed with those who said Britney needs to move beyond what she did as a teenager. It seems most folks want her back, but they want something fresh, which is what Britney was in the late 1990's.

She's a good enough dancer/singer/entertainer to make a comeback, but she needs to go the route of Madonna and reinvent her public image. The strategy worked well for contemporaries/competitors Christina Aguilera (reinvented as less trashy) and Jessica Simpson (reinvented as a legit movie star AND as the love interest of the very charismatic John Mayer).

Contrast that with those who attempted to relive the heyday of the 1990's without changing anything since then. For example the routes taken by Fugees or Pearl Jam in their most recent releases.

Chris Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:51 PM EST

There are many dance competitions that are televised on tv. Look at the pros on Dancing with the Stars or the college dance championships....Britney's level of dancing skill is NO WHERE NEAR their level!

Open your eyes, her level of talent is junior high.

JillyRo Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

master media manipulator...love it!! Maybe that's what the M & M really stands for. Somebody hit Britney one more time and knock her down for good.

Emperor Norton Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:43 PM EST

A market can always be created for any product, as long as the public is willing to be sold to, and a person is willing to be that product.

These two prerequisites have always existed for Britney. From where we stand now, it looks as though they always will, at least from her side.

I'm just sad to see a mother of two trying to run screaming back to her teenage body and life. This can't be done with any kind of grace, and it's usually done at the cost of a person's self respect and career longevity.

I just wish someone in her camp could clean up her act and create a focused career plan that could mature with her as she ages. The way it's going now, she looks like she's taking the fast train to Palookaville.

JoJoJo Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:41 PM EST

Dave, you're so naive. Under the radar?!! Puhleeze, this is a gal who would call the photogs to take a pic of her on the throne in the bathroom if she could. Looks like Britney, the master media manipulator worked her magic on you! You fell for it! A dance practice?! Under the radar, hahahahahahah I'm still laughing at you that you believe that.

Ariel Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

Two ideas:

Ditch the wig, rock a short brown pixie cut, and do something acoustic and "real." Sorta Britney unplugged style ... where she can croon about alcoholism, how much she loves her kids, how hard it was to fall out of love, etc. Perhaps a mournful country ballad?

Find Jesus and follow Brian Littrell from the Backstreet Boys into the Christian world. Sing songs about "Oh, I was so lost and I'm such a sinner, but I'm trying now and with Jesus' help I can get through this..." etc.

Or just pack it up and head to Vegas and do the Celine Dion thang.

Joe C Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:09 PM EST

By the way, Mindy, love your 'Where's my pole' crack, lol.

Joe C Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

As much as I am a Mariah fan who really loves real singers, Britney has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. She looks great. Here's hoping she makes it all the way back. I'll take her music over, ah, never mind, let's keep it positive,lol...

Chris Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

The shows were not supposed to be "under the radar". If you give out tickets on the radio, you are not trying to keep it a secret. Her people leaked it to the press, guarenteed.

She has a deal with x17, the tabloid/paparazzi company, and she has been wearing their hat to advertise for them. Why would you advertise for people that are "stalking" you? Because you love the paparazzi and attention!

Jael Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

What's up with that picture? It looks like someone photographed their hands in front of a mag pic of bloated J.Lo.

Brainiac Thu, May 3, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Maybe once she cleans up her act a little better, she can do a guest spot on American Idol (maybe next year, not this year). She shouldn't be a mentor, but she can perform. She also needs to start dressing nicely. Maybe she should join some more au courrant acts for a couple of performances when they're in concert. She really needs to cover up a bit more and stop looking so trashy. She's shameless and determined enough to make a comeback, but the question is: come back as what?

Chris Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:54 PM EST

She is not talented. She can't dance that well (Shakira, Beyonce, Ciara do it much better). And she can't sing.

Her performances are ameturish, and they always have been. This would fit in at a high school talent show, but she is supposed to be a professional.

On Access last night they were saying that many fans were "disappointed". I wonder if those fans have been paying attention to any of her performances in the past. She has always been boring.

confidential Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

3 words: Britney just sucks!!! I dont' really care about the problems this girls had. She probably went nuts because she realized she has no solid talent what so ever and might loose her fame. All she wants is to be famous and she is getting what she wants. Everything she does gets her press.. Its nuts!!! Her music is awful and she NEVER could sing. She needs to go away!!!!!!!!!

Eeeeewwww Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

My suggestion: A "raincoat only" section for her TRUE fans.

Dave Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:46 PM EST

Britney is a huge pop act and indisputably part of the American landscape so I eagerly await her return.

What you guys are forgetting is that these House of Blues gigs were supposed to be completely under the radar and a surprise for unsuspecting fans. She was on the bill as "The M&M's," and did not charge anyone for entrance herself.

People who paid this much money to see her 15-minute set were those who caught word that she would be appearing -- probably leaked by House of Blues itself for publicity.

For Britney, this was dance practice as well as an opportunity to prove to small audiences and probably herself that she can still put on a show like none other, even after rehab and that messy couple of years she just endured.

Cut her some slack.

teecee Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

maybe the divorce has cost her too much and she needs the money. maybe she should chill some more and hang with her babies. maybe we (ok, I) want to know what slezak thinks.

Coach's Mistress Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:22 PM EST

Lose the wig, put on some decent classy clothes that show off your body without showing your body, engage with the fans, and sing...that's my advice for her. She can't just regain her old fans...she needs to get new ones.

Jenners Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

Why can't Britney just go away and live in remote Lousiana? The girl is a complete trainwreck and as talent-less as they come. When did there get to be so many white-trash people with big dreams that can shell out $125 per ticket to see their poster girl?

Madeleine Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:14 PM EST

The reason she doesn't embrace the bald head..photo op for $. Same as why she keeps her 2nd son hidden. This girl is as narcistic as the get. And her dance moves are so circa 5 years ago.

Hee Hee Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:13 PM EST

Hey Britney, they forgot to liposuction that poochy belly you have happening.

Mebad Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:09 PM EST

I can't beleive her "comeback" is lyp synching to 3 year old songs!! She didn't even introduce a new song! She's all about the attention and staying in the spotlight, just pathetic. Also pathethic are the fans who paid $125 and encourage her, who are these sad little people?!!

eyeball Thu, May 3, 2007 at 01:01 PM EST

sarah, i agree. i don't know what is worse - the fact that she is charging money for these "shows" or that people are actually buying tickets.

GingerCat Thu, May 3, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

Sure, Britney's crazy fans will pay $125 for 15 minutes of lip sync, but most sane people wouldn't pay that to see her for any length of time. As for how she could make a real comeback, how about focusing on the MUSIC? As in, take voice lessons, learn to play an instrument or two, learn to write songs, and SING LIVE in concert. Seriously, no one's heard this chick sing live since the "Star Search" days. But she'll never do all that--she's too undisciplined, shallow, and surface-y. So instead, she should just go away. Forever.

Moi Thu, May 3, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

She didn't stay away long enough.... she just got out of rehab! She outta go play mommy for a year...let everyone forget about her 'problems', then come back.
Way too soon.... what's the hurry??

Louee Thu, May 3, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

Hey, give her props. Her tickets are selling for more than Xtina and Beyonce's right now-and she's only performing for 15 minutes! I'd say she's gonna have a big comeback if after all the negative press she's received she can still have a big turn out and make international headline news for these mini performances. Good for her. I think she's back.

sarah Thu, May 3, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

So, Britney's comeback is just her dancing to a prereorded track? How is that any different from what she used to do in 1999? Obviously, she will make a comeback, which is cool because she's a solid entertainer. The thing that bugs me about her is...she is a liar. She complains about the paparazzi but she LOVES them. Shoot, I'll be she calls them before she goes out so her picture will be everywhere. She's bald voluntarily but wears wigs. She pretends to sing when she's just lip synching. She should stop the facade and just embrace the fact that she's bald, a dancer not a singer and an attention whore or go away.

sarah Thu, May 3, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Bertie Thu, May 3, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

I agree, this whole comeback looks a tad on the trashy side. There really has to be a classier way to do this. She does look like a stripper. I definitely think it's possible to earn some respect back from her fans. The wigs are just silly to me too. She could pull off her hair style like Ep said. There's no doubt what she went through or what she's going through was difficult. But I think she's selling herself short by looking like that.

Ep Sato Thu, May 3, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Credit where it's due, she looks pretty good for a woman who's had two kids. That said, wassup with that wig? A good stylist could help her grow out that hair with some style n grace, the way that Natalie Portman, Demi Moore and Sigourney Weaver did after their stints as baldies.
