The PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 10)

Apr 5, 2007, 12:14 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Film, PopWatch Confessional

Martin_l Last Friday, I got talked into seeing Wild Hogs with my mother and her best friend, and... I laughed my heinie off. Now, considering I just giggled as I typed the word heinie (and then again when I went to dictionary.com to check its spelling), I recognize that my taste isn't exactly infallible. But I do believe that this movie is legitimately funny. And that I should have had more faith in William H. Macy. And that maybe I shouldn't have let 10 years pass between watching Martin Lawrence (pictured) movies.

Assuming you're all still reading (Michael Slezak, you breathing?), here's this week's question: Which movie do you genuinely believe is underrated? We're not talking guilty pleasures.* We already covered those in PopWatch Confessional (Vol. 8). (Special shout-out to my Troop Beverly Hills homies.) We're talking about the sleepers that you think succeeded in their genre but haven't gotten their critical or commercial due. As always, I offer a few to get you thinking:

  • Nothing to Lose. Otherwise known as the last Martin Lawrence movie I saw in theaters. My friend and I had an unintentional private screening. Are we the only ones who think Lawrence and Tim Robbins made a great buddy pic?
  • One Fine Day. As far as romantic comedies go, this Michelle Pfeiffer/George Clooney one is top notch. Right up there with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman's While You Were Sleeping.
  • Speed How did they make a bus thriller work? Almost as surprising? That intense opening mountain scene in Sylvester Stallone's Cliffhanger.

Your turn.

* Yes, "guilty pleasure" is a relative term, but seeing what people don't consider guilty should be half the fun. My friend Tamara pre-nominated Overboard (borderline but acceptable) and Grease 2. Come on, now. While I'd rather watch it than the original, Maxwell Caulfield wears a gold biker suit and sings from the presume dead while standing on the top of a junk pile. GUILTY. My friend Eva, however, went with Final Destination and Josie and the Pussycats (both sanctioned), but thought She's the Man was guilty. NOT GUILTY!

Grease 2: actually not that bad. Half good even. You'd be surprised. But as for really good films that were dismissed, check out Nothing In Common with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason. Or maybe Creator with Peter O'Toole and Vincent Spano. It's hilarious and occasionally heartbreaking ("Sonofabitch!!"). Lastly, A Wedding is a Robert Altman film you never hear about, but it's as funny as anything he's ever done.

Arlington Road!

Patrick Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:41 PM EST

You guys are fantastic! I love that we appreciate all the same movies - I'm gonna second a bunch of your pics:

Clue
Romy & michelle's High School Reunion
Newsies
SOAPDISH (one of the funniest movies of all time)
Josie and the Pussycats
Troop Beverly Hills
The Ref

And how about Adventures in Babysitting? One of the all time great 80s movies that usually gets overlooked with all the John Hughes movies taking up room. Pete's Dragon? A beautiful, sweet, classic Disney story with extremely memorable music. Never Been Kissed? One of the best romantic comedies of the past decade.

Let's talk more about these movies and maybe convince the film companies to put out some special editions of these gems!

KTS Fri, Apr 13, 2007 at 09:10 AM EST

Oh, and "TAG: The Assassination Game" might count as guilty pleasure since I'm fairly certain I'm the only one who has ever heard of it.

Dysthymia83 Fri, Apr 13, 2007 at 09:07 AM EST

many good-to-great films go underrated, but i will offer 2 titles starring the always underrated ethan hawke: "gattaca" and "great expectations".

KTS Fri, Apr 13, 2007 at 08:35 AM EST

Realizing I'm too late for anyone to read this and I'm chiming in on so may aleady mentioned, here I go anyway...
"The Upside of Anger"
"Dead Again"
"Death Becomes Her"
"Lady Hawk"
"The Man with Two Brains" ("I saw you out on the lake today...kissing your brain." and "Into the mud slime queen." still put me in stitches)
"The Ref"
"Playing by Heart"
"16 Candles"
"Galaxy Quest"
"Better Off Dead"
"Serendipity"
"Bye Bye Love"
"Emma"

Hamburger Royal Fri, Apr 13, 2007 at 07:59 AM EST

I'll chime in on The Contender, Keeping the Faith and Serenity. I'd like to add The Upside of Anger - one of the most undeservingly underrated movies I have ever seen.

Thu, Apr 12, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai! Right on, and even better, my favorite Jim Jarmusch film, Dead Man, with Johnny Depp! Criminally underrated, fascinating film.

Thu, Apr 12, 2007 at 06:56 PM EST

Oh, and Zero Effect, another great, unappreciated effort by Bill Pullman. And I love Kim Dickens!

Thu, Apr 12, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

Oh, let's see:

Runaway (Tom Selleck defuses robots)

Better Off Dead (John Cusack)

One Crazy Summer (John Cusack)

Wilder Napalm

The Salton Sea

All of Me (S. Martin "back in bowl")

Holes

The Life Aquatic

etc.

Mon, Apr 9, 2007 at 12:43 AM EST

Definitely agree with "Romy and Michelle" and "She's the Man"! Those were genuinely funny movies.

charlie Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 11:11 PM EST

JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS!

Bernard Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 07:13 PM EST

As the person who said "Fight Club," I am perfectly aware of how this topic works, to whichever condescending a** made that comment.

The fact is that Fight Club got VERY little traction from fans or critics when it was first introduced. In fact, it was a TOTAL bomb when it opened (finally taking a US domestic box office of $37 million on a $63 million dollar budget). And even though it is appreciated by many film buffs and critics now, its current fan base is still considered more "aftermarket" (DVD, cult, etc) than mainstream.

So the next time you chide someone for not understanding a topic, perhaps it would behoove you to educate yourself about it first.

Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

whoever said Fight Club does not understand the topic.

Kind of the same with Boondock Saints - are people aware at how rabid a fanbase this film has? If anything it was once underrated, but is now overrated

Nate Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 04:44 PM EST

Ahh! I also have to agree on the Descent - why this movie was not a bigger hit is beyond my comprehension - one of the smartest and scariest movies in years!

Nate Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 04:42 PM EST

I know I've already posted, but I also have to recommend Romy and Michele's High School Reunion - certainly one of the best movies of the 90's. I don't know how people feel about it now, but I think Scrooged is one of the best Bill Murray movies - the scenes with he and Carol Kane are some of the funniest moments I've seen on film!

Jenn Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

Jawbreaker
Waking Ned Devine
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

lauren's sister Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 01:40 PM EST

Ditto Flirting with Disaster and Quick Change "he was like, 'up your butt with a coconut'....but he had no coconut; he had no coconut to my knowledge." Also, Dead Again (an exceptionally romantic and creative thriller), He Said, She Said (my favorite Kevin Bacon movie and Inventing the Abbotts. And, although it got great reviews, I think "The Descent" was underrated. The best thriller to be released since Silence of the Lambs.

nnm Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 12:59 PM EST

I thought I was the only one who watched "Teen Witch." In the fullness of time, this movie has become a classic. I'm surprised TBS isn't playing it over and over. Maybe it should.

I also watch "Now and Then" everytime it's on.

Moni Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Ditto to pretty much everything on this list. I LOVE Teen Witch! Also, to add one, what about Big Trouble? Stinkin' hysterical!

Mindy Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

A few more:
BARBERSHOP! I love it. It's hilarious and Cedric the Entertainer.. well, entertains!
The Family Stone was great! Funny, touching, real, and highly watchable, if under the radar.
Simon Birch is another all time fav.
Also, Reality Bites changed my life. Ok not really, that was an overstatement, but it is witty and has a great sountrack. If you are a gen x or gen y-er you'll enjoy it. It has Ethan Hawke, Ben Stiller and Winona Ryder... Ben Stiller before he got silly. Speaking of Ethan, has anyone mentioned Gattaca? That was a good movie too, that was underrated.

Lauren Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 10:50 AM EST

Flirting with Disaster -- Lily Tomlin and Mary Tyler Moore are genius. Plus, Ben Stiller's not annoying.

Quick Change -- Bill Murray in a clown suit robbing a bank...I know it sounds crazy. But with a cast that includes Randy Quaid, Geena Davis, Jason Robards, and Tony Shalhoub (in a hilarious turn as a cab driver), you've gotta believe it's worth putting in your Netflix queue. Honestly, one of the funniest movies ever made.

Z30 Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

Here's one where I can't find anyone that actually heard of it: Bandits, with Bruce Willis, Cate Blanchett and Billy Bob Thornton. It. Is. Hilarious.

Zack Hudson Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

1.Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and
2.The Sweetest Thing.
Sure TST wasn't very well executed, but it had some pretty funny jokes and a good attitude.
Romy and Michelle is way above par with any of that 90s Sandler, Farley, et.al, pap — certainly far more intelligent.

ohsohappydaddy Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 10:11 AM EST

Batchelor Party
Starship Troopers
Zoolander
Das Boot(best war film ever made)
Any Bruce Lee movie
Any Jackie Chan movie before he hit hollywood
Louis De Funes Gendarme movies
Britsh Hammer Horrors

Mindy Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

The Man in the Moon! (Not the Andy Kaufman biopic, but Reese Witherspoon's first movie) I watch it about once a year, and have since it came out in like 1991. ALSO- Untamed Heart. Rosie Perez and Marissa Tomei and Christian Slater. "Adam, Adam? With the Baboon Heart?... I'd do 'em." I agree with The Sandlot, and Princess Bride, both among my most quotable movies. "Have fun storming the castle!"

abi Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 09:38 AM EST

I think the most underrated movie in my experience has to be "Drop Dead Gorgeous." It's hilarious and the mockumentary format makes it even funnier because everything is so deadpan. You usually only see that in a Guest movie. I love DDG and it's really too bad more people didn't see it.

Brian Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 08:53 AM EST

2 of my favorites are "Ruthless People" -- one of the funniest comedies of the 80's that got little or no fanfare. Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold and "Supergirl" were part of the cast as well as a hilarious turn by Bill Pullman. There are scenes in that movie that are some of the funniest ever put on film.

The other is the brilliant buddy comedy "Midnight Run". Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin were fantastic. This movie is far superior to most of the attempts DeNiro has made at comedy.

Thinking of a Bill Pullman movie brought up another movie that is possible the best revenge thriller ever put on film. "The Last Seduction". Linda Fiorentino was robbed on an Oscar nomination because she played a successful, vicious, female villian who commits the perfect murder. Also awesome in this flick are the aformentioned Bill Pullman and Peter Berg. I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS FILM STRONG ENOUGH!

Jael Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 08:46 AM EST

The Shadow with Alec Baldwin struck that middle ground between funny and serious that the 90s Batman movies failed to do. Plus Tim Curry and Sir Ian! How can people not like this movie?!

Mollie Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 08:27 AM EST

Have to add:
Goodburger (featuring a young Kenan Thompson)
A Lot Like Love (Ashton Kutcher can act in this one!)
Clueless
Cellular
15 minutes
Alfie (the Jude Law one)
The Talented Mr. Ripley

Guy Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 08:22 AM EST

Boondock saints. The most underated action film of all time and if you have never seen or heard of it rent it and then get the doc about the writer overnight and see why he is 8 balled by most of Hollywood

Nicole Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 07:32 AM EST

Definitely for me would have to be Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I try to get as many people to watch that as I can because so few people have even heard of it. The Iron Giant too. It should always be listed among great animated movies: great animation, great social commentary, and great voice-over talent.

Bernard Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 12:44 AM EST

The Long Kiss Goodnight
The Phantom
Starship Troopers
Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country
Arlington Road
Dark City
Malcolm X
The Ninth Gate
Dead Again
Chaplin
Beloved
Deterrence
Mission to Mars
Bamboozled
The Aviator
Fight Club
Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow
Strange Days
and the ultimate underrated movie
Unbreakable

Valerie Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 12:14 AM EST

I'm going lame here and saying Showdown In Little Tokyo. It's goofy and it's fun. Close runner up would have to be the Covenant. It's so awesomely terrible.

L Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:55 PM EST

Newsies. The movie has a teenage Christian Bale singing and is completely ridiculous, but gets better every time I watch it.

J Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:53 PM EST

I dunno, some of these films are far from unappreciated -- maybe they're not blockbusters, but they're extremely well-loved: The Ref, High Fidelity, etc.

Let me throw in one that was very maligned and didn't do very well in the box-office or in geek culture: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I'm not saying it's good -- its third act was, as the saying goes, a mess. But many critics contested it on its very premise -- 19th-century classic adventure characters all in the same "steampunk"-ish universe -- and I thought that premise, and the first two acts, were very entertaining. Any movie with Mina Harker, Captain Nemo, Allan Quatermain AND Tom Sawyer (as the nutso adrenaline junkie he is) wins my heart.

maribel Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:46 PM EST

I agree with Cece - A Bronx Tale is one of my favorite films, evah. Robert DeNiro did a great job directing and the soundtrack was AWESOME.

Chris Richards Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:29 PM EST

Dracula 2000 is a surprisingly fun and thought-out vampire flick, with a twist near the end that was a decent surprise that I couldn't believe no one had thought of before.

Mary Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:23 PM EST

I looove "Just Friends"! Anna Faris is hilarious!
It's sad but one of my favorite movies of all time is "Where the Heart Is". A baby born in Wal-Mart, an overplayed country song, a tornado...all the makings of a guilty pleasure chick-flick! Natalie Portman's character grows from an uneducated single mother to a successful young woman right before our eyes. Heartbreaking plot, but a happy ending makes it a must-see.

Fatima Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:12 PM EST

Brown Sugar - The relationship mirroring the progression of hip-hop is a really smart and clever idea. And Taye Diggs and Sanna Lathan make the finest couple ever.

Scott Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:07 PM EST

THE REF is the most hilarious movie of the past 20 years. Yet when my friends I recommended it to went to see it, it was gone (after 2 weeks!). Woody Allen & Diane Keaton together again in MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY. Perfection, both as a thriller & a comedy. Tom Berenger (in a typically underrated performance) in the gorgeous Hitchcockian romantic thriller SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME (which unfortunately opened opposite the ludicrous "Fatal Attraction" and never had a chance). Why are my favorite movies usually critical and commercial flops?

Nate Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 11:02 PM EST

Two of the best horror movies ever made come to mind - Wes Craven's New Nightmare, in which the director took his own ingenius concept and gave it a refreshing, frightening twist, and John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, which is one of the most genuinely scariest movies of all time and, in my mind, Carpenter's best work.

Jessica Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 10:15 PM EST

STEPMOM! I feel like everyone disliked it and it is really well-made. The characters are so relatable and the acting is spectacular. Jeez, people.

Chris Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 10:15 PM EST

The Last Days of Disco

I think it's out of print, but its a great movie with some of my favorite dialog ever!

Valerie Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 08:43 PM EST

Clueless - A brilliant, tongue-in-cheek movie

True Lies - same reason, one of the few times Mr. Schwarzenegger was actually funny !

And of course, While you were Sleeping ! Thank you Mandi for mentionning it. The dinner conversation alone is priceless !

Lesley Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 07:48 PM EST

One more:
THE CONTENDER (brilliant writing, acting (especially Jeff Bridges), and a riveting story)

Lesley Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 07:45 PM EST

OUT OF SIGHT (all subsequent evidence to the contrary, Jennifer Lopez CAN act. And George Clooney is gorgeous!)
BOWFINGER (fall on the floor funny)
REVENGE (a fun popcorn movie that got scathing reviews)
MANHUNTER (the REAL Hannibal Lecter movie)
HEAT (why wasn't this the top dog at theatres when released?)
K-PAX (loved it)
LOVE JONES (a beautiful love story)
BROKEN HEARTS CLUB (a heart-warming movie about friendship)

Dan Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 07:21 PM EST

although it got critical praise the box office didn't show the love for a great film you can watch over and over, Stranger than Fiction.

AnthonyCW Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 07:07 PM EST

"Akeelah and the Bee" is very underrated. If it had come out later in the year I think it would have received a lot more recognition, but whatever. I love it.

I agree with:
10 Things I Hate About You
Mean Girls
Drumline
The Sandlot
A Low Down Dirty Shame

I'd also say "Love & Basketball" and "Soul Food" too. They're popular black movies, but I don't know too many other people who know how good they are.

Fatima Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 07:00 PM EST

house of sand and fog.

Honeybee Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

This is all relative, of course. My Mother once declared that she loved this obscure little sci fi movie no one else saw called "Bladerunner".

But I would have to chime in:

Dick, My Blue Heaven, The Painted Veil, 28 Days, Rounders (popular in poker circles but not appreciated in the general population)

Popcorn! Popcorn! Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:30 PM EST

• Ruthless People (Where have you gone, Judge Reinhold??)
• Addicted to Love (mean-spirited but hilarious)
• The Ref (ditto!)
• Can't Hardly Wait (worth it for Jenny Elfman's tearful ode to Scott Baio alone. Seth Green and Lauren Ambrose are great too.)
• Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (way ahead of it's time!)

Joe Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:24 PM EST

I totally agree with the Drop-Dead Gorgeous and One Fine Day mentions. And I'll stand behind Aeon Flux, as I thought it was very well-made. Some of it didn't work (Frances McDormand!) but it was unfairly maligned.

My choices:
* Down with Love--I thought this was really sweet and clever. It probably would have been better received if Far From Heaven hadn't been released earlier.
* In the Cut--I thought this was fabulous. It had a really dark, unsettling tone and I thought the actors (Meg Ryan included) were all terrific.
* Birth--I know a lot of people hated this one, but I thought it was haunting.

Jenny Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:19 PM EST

Not only is "The Ref" hilarious to the regular folk, but is highly recommended among mental health professionals for its incredibly spot-on portrayals.

It may actually have been given some due, but "Romancing the Stone" is just classic. Brilliantly written and perfectly framed.

Bing Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:16 PM EST

Ok, you've named a lot of my guilty pleasures - but does anyone remember Ski School. Animal House/Caddyshack on the slopes. Shakespeare soliloquies while dressed in red tights and viking horns, via helium!

And while I'm at it, how about Down Periscope. That helped me thru a divorce. TY Kelsey Grammer!

Amber Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:07 PM EST

The Truman Show. So ahead of its time, before reality TV was a way of life. Jim Carrey in a brilliantly understated role.

The Jester Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:05 PM EST

I'm a bit late to the party, but how is Sliding Doors left off this list? Gwennyth Paltrow and James Hannah--awesome rom com.

kyle Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:02 PM EST

Saving Silverman and the Big Lebowski. Lebowski might be a stretch since it is widely known and loved but if you look at initial box office reciepts it can definitley be seen as underrated. Saving Silverman is kind of a rip off of other comedies but Jack Black and Steve Zahn are amazingly funny in it and it features a laugh out loud cameo by Neil Diamond!

Matthew Lingo Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:01 PM EST

Citizen Kane.

nycgirllms Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 05:56 PM EST

OMG! I love Midnight Madness. My parents gave me the DVD one X-MAS. Another X-MAS, my sister got me Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Love it!

J.M. Barstool Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 05:51 PM EST

Oh, Point Break and the Cable Guy. I know Cable Guy sort of gets some revisionist props already . . . and some people dismiss PB as laughable pop relic, but it's a damn fine action movie.
And Pump Up the Volume! That movie taught me what self-indulgent, teenaged indignance was all about, and it still gets me every time I watch it.
I think I ought to leave this post alone now. This can quickly become addictive.

Chris Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 05:49 PM EST

A Low Down Dirty Shame - With a pre-famous Jada Pinkett Smith and Keenen Ivory Wayans.

Love Jones -- Nia Long at her best.

Drumline -- which gives a side of Black Colleg life rarely seen. I don't think Nick Cannon has ever acted again after this movie.

aa Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 05:49 PM EST

cruel intentions is very unfairly underrated. smg should go back to playing the katherines/kendalls of the world. and thanks for the clue reminder that movie is hilarious.

J.M. Barstool Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

Clueless
The Monster Squad (totally legit Goonies knock-off)

Bertie Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 05:42 PM EST

Okay, so I thought I was the only one to ever see "Teen Witch"!! I loved that song at the end when she throws the necklace on the ground...ahhh memories....

Evil Petting Zoo Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

Some of these are so NOT underrated. Come on, The Princess Bride, Young Frankenstein, The Jerk those are universally held as some of the best rated, most popular films.

I agree with EuroTrip, most I've laughed in a movie ever (until Borat). Defending Your Life is my personal under-rated fave.

Tracy Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Oh yeah, Nine Months! Hugh Grant and Tom Arnold= very funny

Tracy Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:48 PM EST

Drop Dead Gorgeous
10 Things I Hate About You
Eurotrip
The Ref
Dick
Grandma's Boy
Now and Then (loved this when I was a tween)
Cruel Intentions (Reese is a goddess!)

echo Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

Raising Arizona, The Accidental Tourist, My Blue Heaven and Young Frankenstein.

Ashlee Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:40 PM EST

A lot of people keep mentioning 10 Things I Hate About You, but I completely disagree that it's underrated. I don't know if it was ignored at the box office because I'm only 20 so I didn't really pay attention when it came out, but everyone I know loves loves loves that movie. Maybe it's overlooked by older generations, but its definitely received the attention it deserves.

Rani Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:31 PM EST

I agree with Keeping the Faith and The Best Man, as well as:
Grosse Pointe Blank
Strictly Ballroom
Return to Me (kinda cheesy, but it has David Duchovny and Minnie Driver!)
High Fidelity (another Cusack film.. I love John Cusack)
Trading Places with Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy- hands down the best buddy comedy-action movie

Alysia Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:29 PM EST

I heart Playing by Heart!

Eurodudue Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:24 PM EST

EuroTrip has to be the funniest f ing movie on the planet.

"Dude you kissed your sister"

abp Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

Some outstanding suggestions here, folks. Well done. Clue is perhaps my favorite comedy of all time, and Drop Dead Gorgeous gets an honorable mention as well. Also, Leap of Faith is amazing! That movie first made me fall in love with Liam Neeson, and I even owned the soundtrack back in the day. "Are you ready for a miracle? Ready as I can be!"

Three films I haven't seen mentioned yet:

My Blue Heaven (Love this movie! And is it just me or is Steve Martin overrepresented on this list of under-appreciated films? Hmm.)

The Sandlot (How this movie does not rank among the great coming of age stories is beyond me. "You're killing me, Smalls!")

Curious George (What can I say? I've got small kids. That said, I genuinely enjoy the humor in this movie, and was surprised that it didn't get any Academy love -- no noms for animated feature or best original song? What gives?)

Jenn Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:10 PM EST

Tiffany, Hilarious that you remembered Teen Witch! I used to watch it every time it was on t.v. I haven't thought about it since they killed Kevin off of One Life To Live. (He was in Teen Witch and is married to Randa in real life!)

Lovely Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

Serenity will always be my favorite underrated movie!!

Murderpuss Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

The Weather Man with Nicolas Cage.

a Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

I have to say that I love Princess Bride (Cary Elwes & Robin Wright) and of course The Usual Supsects. Oh, I'm right there with you on 10 Things I Hate About You and Clue.

Cato Chris Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

I have to go with The Long Kiss Goodnight. Renny Harlin directing his then-wife Geena Davis, PTA memeber turned kick-a$$ assassin. Samuel L. at his snarky best. Great one liners, great action. Way underated.

Nat Ott Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 03:48 PM EST

Add That Thing You Do and While You Were Sleeping to my list.

Other under rated movies:
Keeping the Faith with Jenna Elfman, Edward Norton and Ben Stiller is one of my fav, non-traditional rom-coms. Who doesn't love a priest who falls in love with his best friend? And Before Sunset with Julie Deply and Ethan Hawke was so heart breakingly good it makes me cry every time I watch it.

I have to say "The Best Man" was really underrated. When most people talk about Terrance Howard, they fail to mention The Best Man. He was great as Quentin! I also agree with Drop Dead Gorgeous. Every time I see that movie, it cracks me up. Also, 10 Things I Hate About You, Grease 2, and one that most people don't remember, but I love for it's sheer corniness, Teen Witch.

As much as I can't generally stand Martin Lawrence..."Nothing to Lose" cracks me up. Good use of "I'm the Scat Man."

My underrated movies are "A Simple Plan", "A Civil Action", LOVE "Bowfinger"

Also, I think Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry" is easily the funniest movie he's done in the past 20 years.

Funny I see some of my choices already mentioned by others. The Ref is one of the funniest movies ever, and someone cited Dante's Peak, which was a really fun, very exciting film.

I am so excited to see The Emperor's New Groove getting so much love. Seriously, it is thee most underrated Disney movie ever. So very funny.
"Uh oh." "Don't tell me, we're about to go over a huge waterfall." "Yup." "Sharp rocks at the bottom." "Most likely." "Bring it on."
Also, worthy shout out for 10 Things I Hate About You ("Who knocked up your sister." & "What is it with this chick. She got beer flavored nipples?" Awesome) and Soapdish ("We were both naked and you promised." "We were never naked." "Well, we could have been.")

I say without a fleck of irony that Swept Away is one of the most unfairly maligned movies ever. It's not a great movie, and I admit the first half hour or so is borderline dreadful. However, as it goes along it becomes first tolerable and then even somewhat moving. As the movie progresses, so does Madonna, starting out shrill and annoying, but growing in the role until she was reasonably effective at the end. I saw it in the theater expecting it to be comically awful based on the critical response, yet I'm not ashamed to say it won me over and by the end I was liking it.

Two fairly recent thrillers that certainly didn't get their due are Frailty and Skeleton Key. Frailty is a fantastic movie with a very clever concept. The "suprise" ending was a bit obvious, but it didn't detract from an otherwise great movie. I thought Skeleton Key was very effective and atmospheric, building genuine tension leading to a great ending. Both featured really solid scripts and very good acting.

I swear to all of you, "Torque," the Ice Cube motorcycle flick and "Exit Wounds," the DMX-Steven Seagal buddy copper, are two of the best action movies ever made.

THE MONSTER SQUAD is a total classic. Loved it as a kid and caught it recently and it still holds up. "Wolfman's got nards!"

I love "Miss Congeniality"--one of the only chick-flicks I'll watch. And "10 Things I Hate About You" is one of the best teen movies EVER!

Ah, memories. I have to agree with Long Kiss. I was surprised at how good that was. Also I love, love, love That Thing you do.

But Swing Kids owns this category for me. Christian Bale, Robert Sean Leonard, Noah Wyle, Kenneth Branaugh. Hopelessly cheesy but so AWESOME.

AD - my cover is blown; I'm laughing out loud at my desk and everyone around me knows my work is never funny. That's it - I'm renting Bowfinger this weekend.

The remake of "Sabrina" (1995) is completely underrated. Great cast (especially Greg Kinnear and the awesome Nancy Marchand), great direction, great script. OK, so Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond didn't have great chemistry...but neither did Bogart and Audrey Hepburn in the original and people still rhapsodize about what a classic it is.

One of those comedies that is up there with KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE, MEATBALLS, PORKY'S, UP THE ACADEMY, AND POLICE ACADEMY. Check it out if you can find it. worth it for sure.

For comedy, I stop and watch The Man Who Knew Too Little every time it is on. I love Bill Murray in just about everything he does, (including Larger Than Life). Why isn't Joanne Whalley more famous? Oh, that reminds me of another underrated movie: Willow.
