Talking Movie Moves with the Stars of 'Dancing with the Stars'

Categories: 'Dancing With the Stars', Reality TV, Television

Laila_l Since Monday's night's Dancing with the Stars featured more than its share of moves lifted straight out of the Saturday Night Fever playbook, we thought we'd poll some of the evening's highest scorers about which dance-centric movies made an impression on them in their younger years. Surprisingly, no one picked Staying Alive. Go figure…

Joey Fatone
Dance Partner: Kym Johnson
Score: 25
To sum up the night: "I was trying to get in touch with the softer side, I tried to have a balance."
Favorite Dance Movie:
Joey: "Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Booglaoo. You don't even know what that movie is, do you?"
Kym: "I must have missed it.
Joey: "It's about breakdancing.

Laila Ali
Dance Partner: Maksim Chmerkovskiy (pictured, with Ali)
Score: 28
To sum up the night: "I have no problem being sexy and gymnastic."
Favorite Dance Movie:
Laila: "The Wiz. Diana Ross and Michael Jackson… [starts dancing] Ease on down, ease on down the road…"
Maksim: "That's not fair, because he's too good. Michael Jackson is my dance idol of all time. I put him up before Fred Astaire."

Apolo Anton Ohno
Dance Partner: Julianne Hough
Score: 30
To sum up the night: "We definitely practiced longer. It was not an easy week, physically or mentally."
Favorite Dance Movie:
Apolo: "Footloose was good. And Dirty Dancing. When I first saw it, I was like, 'I wanna dance like that!'"
Julianne: "I feel like Olivia Newton-John in Grease in that very last scene with the tight pants where you really can't go to the bathroom. That's me right now."
Apolo: "She hasn't gone since before the show."

Ian Ziering
Dance Partner: Cheryl Burke
Score: 24
To sum up the night: "I don't think anybody works harder than me. I do the best I can every time and I give 150 percent."
Favorite Dance Movie:
Ian: "Probably Saturday Night Fever,. It was the first R rated movie I ever saw, and I wasn't 17. I went with my mom when I was 13 or 14, and seeing John Travolta move definitely made an impression. I've always liked to perform, so when I was that age, I was taking jazz lessons, and now I'm getting private lessons from a world champion!"

Ian and Cheryl get my vote! They always look fantastic and give every dance their 100%. Ian is not a professional dancer like Joey Fatone, or a professional athlete like Apolo or Laila, so he comes to the show at a disadvantage to them. But yet he stays up with them in talent. A week ago he received six straight "9s" from the judges, so he definitely has the potential to win. I hope he surprises everyone by giving us his best performances in the next two weeks and capturing the trophy. If you like Ian and Cheryl, please do your part to vote for them on Monday -- vote 4 times for each phone number and 4 times online. Also, Ian has really cool videos on his websites at www.IanZiering.com and www.MySpace.com/OfficialIZ and there you can sign up to receive his fun email blasts.

OMG!! Someone else knows "Fast Forward"!!!! I used to read through the TV Guide movie listings every week hoping that this movie would be on because none of the video stores carried it. I love it!

Another strong one that not many people know about is "Sing". It's pretty cheesy, but Lorraine Bracco as a tough NY teacher is great.

Other fantastic dance movies (speaking as a dancer): Strictly Ballroom and Dance With Me (LOVE me some Chayanne)

what is the appeal of this show?

K Tue, Apr 17, 2007 at 09:53 PM EST

He can put MJ above Fred Astaire... but not above Gene Kelly.

RyRy Tue, Apr 17, 2007 at 08:37 PM EST

Laila Ali almost makes me straight... lol... i wanna see her win!

Apolo Should Win Tue, Apr 17, 2007 at 02:58 PM EST

1.) Apolo's dance last night was mindblowing. I thought it was one of the best dances on any season of Dancing with the Stars. He's very lucky to have gotten such a hot, plucky professional dancer in Julianne. She's definitely Cheryl 2.0.

2.) My favorite dance move is a little known cheese-fest directed by the great Sidney Poitier called "Fast Forward" - if you haven't seen it check it out. There needs to be a remake of it ASAP.

Is Steve Sanders bragging about seeing an R-rated movie when he was 13 or 14? And do you realize how old that makes him?

God he is funny.

Steve Sanders!
