So long, Soledad

Soledad_l Breaking news out of New York today: CNN has officially said it ain't So-ledad. That's right, morning-news fans, the cable channel announced that it has yanked its titanic a.m. twosome, the O'Briens (that is, Soledad and Miles), in favor of Fox vet Kiran Chetry and John "Not the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court" Roberts, formerly of CBS. (For more details on the switch, visit TVNewser.)

The departed will get new assignments at the network, but this turn of events still makes me sad. Now, I've never really been able to get a bead on Miles — I know that he's not related to his co-anchor and that he's a big aviation buff and that he's not nearly as cuddly as Bill Hemmer. But I am a big fan of Soledad (pictured), who's always seemed smarter than your average perky-purdy newswoman (just check out her wonderful commentary in Spike Lee's Hurricane Katrina documentary, When the Levees Broke — which, hey, just won a Peabody!). Worse than merely seeing her go is the fact that her flight from the anchor chair means that there's now one less person of color in a prominent position in TV news. When they say that this business is hurting, I now have one more reason to agree wholeheartedly.

Anyway, are you with me, PopWatchers? Any thoughts on the change? Honestly, how long do you think it will be before Wolf Blitzer is hosting every show on CNN?

norine williams Thu, Apr 3, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

please relay this msg to soledad. Pls re-run the MLK special of April 3rd again. I'm at Langston Univ & the night it was to be aired, the cable was not available & I missed the special after waiting a month.

Soledad is an idiot. Clearly not very well educated. Can not stand to listen to her. Those that think she is so great are most likely not very smart to begin with. Wonder how she got her job? It was not talent, that is for sure.

TOM Wed, Oct 3, 2007 at 11:54 AM EST

Really think that Greta Wodele is a fine addition to C-Span. What's wrong with a little subtle beauty with that dreary Washington gossip?

Tony Tue, Aug 28, 2007 at 08:12 AM EST

I agree with Joshua Rich, Booting Solodad was a big mistake! I like Miles O'Brien too, but CNN's heyday was definitely when they had Solodad and Bill Hemmer. I don't buy Kiran Chetry, she is not believable, besides who does not love Solodad, she is sincere and appeals to almost all.

Joe Harrington Wed, May 30, 2007 at 11:05 PM EST

what's wrong with Greta Wodele? She's a seasoned journalist, VERY classy, professional and absolutely beautiful.

Cy Bolinger Wed, May 30, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

Soledad O'Brien represents the unvarnished truth in news today and the gross and vulgar consequences for being a truthful and highly talented journalist. The cable news networks as well as the "big three" networks are pandered-out to politics and advertisers. She is greatly missed and would be an excellent replacement for Katie Couric (speaking of the "big three).

Soledad, where are you?

D Taylor Wed, May 16, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

I was so disappointed to turn on American Morning and not see Soledad and Miles. I looked forward to Soledad's no nonsense interviewing skills as she often cut to the heart of the issues concerning most viewers. It was great to find anchors who presented information that was news worthy versus entertainment tv. The new anchors are boring and have very little chemistry. I have a hard time watching them in the morning so I am now searching for a different morning news show.

willie hunt Fri, May 11, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

I can't believe you replaced soledad ,miles was okay but soledad was the morning show bad,bad mistake.nothing wrong with karen but she is know soledad do the right thing and bring her back

Marshall McReynolds Fri, May 11, 2007 at 07:50 AM EST

I am an avid CNN viewer. I'm also a Soledad fan. I watched Miles mainly because he sat in the next chair. It was great to actually listen to such a brilliant woman of color whose journalistic skills almost overshadowed her good looks. She also has a most impressive academic pedigree. Frankly, the ideal choice would be pairing Soledad with Jamie Floyd -- of course that would never fly! Maybe CNN is quietly switching to the Fox brand of garbage.

Linda Dick Mon, May 7, 2007 at 12:33 PM EST

Soooo, soooo boring now. Guess I will have to watch the local news.
I can't believe someone thought this was a good idea. So sad

Kate Thu, May 3, 2007 at 09:29 AM EST

Why did you guys do this? First Hemmer and now the O'briens? Shame on you! The two new ones don't have the class of the O'briens.

sheila burns Tue, May 1, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

BRING BACK SOLEDAD AND MILES******
the current hosts are BORING!!!!

bill Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

AS MUCH AS I HATE TO I'LL GO BACK TO THE NETWORKS FOR MY A.M. NEWS....AS FAR AS WOLF BLITZER IS CONCERNED, HE IS ABOUT AS INTERESTING AS WATCHING PAINT BRY

Nancy Mon, Apr 23, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

My husband watches news constantly, but I really don't care for it except I really enjoyed watching these two. Oh well, I just won't have to watch any more.

fred gatton Mon, Apr 23, 2007 at 06:52 AM EST

Has CNN ever thought their ratings over all are fading because of anchors like Wolf Blitzer? Unbearable.

Fred gatton Mon, Apr 23, 2007 at 06:49 AM EST

Miles and Soledad played well off each other. The show now is boring and predicable. Along with the huge amount of advertising it is unwatchable.

rifat Thu, Apr 19, 2007 at 10:44 AM EST

Soledad and Carol Lin were great - where are they?

Tara Corley Thu, Apr 19, 2007 at 07:00 AM EST

Yes, we are very distressed about the CNN change. Is younger and poutier
the order of the day? And oh, by the way, it's happened on C-Span, also.
Some younger, less adroit-but-better-haired young woman (Greta Wodele) now pops in and out of Washington Journal daily. Makes us grab the remote...Too bad, CNN and C-Span. You've all caved and it's discouraging.

Donna Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 09:10 PM EST

What is CNN thinking? First it was Bill Hemmer, Now it's Soledad and Miles. I will be switching back to ABC morning news.

Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

Soledad and Miles were the best am news team. The CNN executives must be crazy to replace them. They want to dummy down the news. Job well done. Guess I'm back to ABC.

Brenda Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 01:41 PM EST

I will truly miss Soledad. I tuned in this morning, and her replacement does not have the depth, and the interview skills that I TRULY loved from Soledad. Miles O'Brien was a terrible choice to sit next to such a great talent, but to replace Soledad is a big mistake. I loved when they had Hemmer, Cafferty and Soledad in the mornings. I am debating on changing my morning news program.

Sharon Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 11:03 AM EST

Soledad and Miles was how I started each day. Sorry to see them go. I have to find a new morning news show. CNN is now boring.

Jennifer Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 09:37 AM EST

My world has just been 'shattered'! CNN has replaced my favorite set of 'feel-good' liberals; what to do, what to do!!!!! How will I ever make it throught the day, NOW? Where's Al Sharpton when you really need him????

pat cooley Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 08:31 AM EST

I will really miss Soledad and Miles. They made American Morning really wonderful - informative and entertaining. Please bring them back.

Jill Hawken Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 08:13 AM EST

I don't understand the thining at CNN/ Whe Bill Hemmer was replaced Miles Obrien brought out the best in Soledad, she was always good but much stiffer pre Miles. I don't think I will watch the morning new anymore. They were a great combo and CNN will be less withouth the deo. She is bright and now more lighthearted he is magic on the show.
Go figyre CNN , I can;t imagine Ted Turner made this choice it is a bad one in my opinion.
thanks
Jill

Jim Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 07:50 AM EST

Soledad was the draw to the CNN morning news, Miles was the superior turn-off, opionated, all knowing, done that been there mistake in replacing Hemmer. See ya CNN in the morning, it was good, why did ya fix it.

Gail Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 07:39 AM EST

I was very sad to see Bill H. go, now
Soledad and Miles, I guess I will have
to switch to Fox.

Cherie Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 06:29 AM EST

What incredibly BORING replacements!! Without Soledad and Miles- I won't be watching. Soledad is SMOOTH and LIKEABLE.

dave Sat, Apr 14, 2007 at 06:40 PM EST

Removing soledad is bad bad news.i will not watch cnn again.

Renee Fri, Apr 13, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

I can't believe that CNN is replacing Soledad and Miles. Both are much more intelligent and genuine than other morning show personalities. I guess it's back to radio for me. I will surely miss them though.

Laura Sherman Fri, Apr 13, 2007 at 10:39 AM EST

As a journalist myself, I am heartbroken to see Soledad and Miles leave the AM spot. They were great. They are human, bright and extremely perceptive. CNN am just lost me as a viewer.

Karen Fri, Apr 13, 2007 at 08:19 AM EST

I thought she was smart too until I saw her on Jeopardy.........not so smart. I think Kirin Chetry will be great, but also might meet the same fate since she's linked with JR. Half of the news that comes out of his mouth is from his own personal archives. Hey CNN, can you get him to just report the news without adding stories from his life?

Linda Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 12:58 AM EST

American Morning never recovered from their poor decision to send Hemmer to the competition and move Jack Cafferty. They were the bomb...just look at what happened to their numbers after June 2005. btw...has it escaped anyone that John Roberts looks and reports similar to Hemmer...only an older version. Man...this is a cutthroat business!

elisa lopez-david Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 07:19 PM EST

I am also a huge fan of Soledad's.It's unfortunate that being an award winning journalist is not enough,to keep an anchor position.I looked forward to her commentary every morning.

Maggie Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 06:00 PM EST

Aw...who's gonna tell Colbert??

Chris Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

Surprising news, but I love Chetry and have been waiting for her to "break out". Soledad will be missed, but they picked an amazing replacement.

fredric Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:45 PM EST

This is very sad for CNN. Their lower ratings will be a direct result of this long running game of musical chairs. Hemmer/Soledad were the high point, and now they've reached the bottom.

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:26 PM EST

...and she just won a Peabody!?!?! Man, that's pretty crappy, CNN.

Houstonian Jen in Baltimore Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:23 PM EST

fenn138 and Ben, Soledad has an African-American parent. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle...

I am greatly disappointed in CNN. Soledad was a great addition to the network. She proved herself throughout the Hurricane Katrina debacle and beyond. I was never a fan of Miles, so I'm not sad to see him go, but Soledad's exit is really surprising.

Madeleine Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:06 PM EST

Hmm...heard that Paula Zahn going through rough time, personally (she cheated on hubby) and her contract is up for renewal, ratings always ben so-so. Soledad in Paula's slot at CNN would be a good move!

FLGrl Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:02 PM EST

Oh right, we're talking about morning shows - FOX's morning show is pretty bad. But most morning shows (beyond the actual factual news) are pretty useless.

FLGrl Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:00 PM EST

What's with all the FOX haters?

The O'Briens will both be missed, hope they get good future gigs.

JC Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 09:24 AM EST

Sad that Soledad is being thrown out with the bathwater (aka Miles O'Brien). Miles had all the personality of a brick wall and what personality he did portray could be categorized as "boorish prick." Hopefully Soledad will get another chance somewhere else.

HEY Denise Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 09:19 AM EST

"The VIEW" ???? Are you nuts? That show is crap!
Soledad has more class than that!
And CHAZZBOT.... you're a loser!!

Me Myself I Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 09:07 AM EST

renie posted:
"Kiran Chetry is also a person of color so what's the problem? Soledad is great but ignoring Kiran's ethnic background just cause she came from FOX is just wrong."

What are you talking about? The writer laments one LESS person of color being in a major news spot, as in SOLEDAD leaving. Kiran is just switching chanels, so she's still occupying a spot. Nobody is ignoring her or your precious Fox news. Yeesh.

Anyway, Boo CNN! Long live Soledad!

Chazzbot Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 09:03 AM EST

I fail to see how it makes any difference who reads the teleprompter dreck that passes for information on any of the cable news networks. I'll miss Miles O'Briens enthusiasm for (and understanding of) science stories, but Soledad is just another made-up news skank.

Ben Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 09:01 AM EST

Yeah, person of color?

Cherrie Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 08:41 AM EST

Soledad was one of the major factors that got me to tune into CNN in the morning even though I've been a Good Morning America fan. I don't understand the reasoning in replacing her. I won't be watching CNN in morning any longer.

fenn138 Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 08:10 AM EST

Person of color?

Jan Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 07:40 AM EST

CNN has screwed some great employees. I watch Greta on Fox but would have never watched Fox if she had not moved there. I love Soledad's presentation of the news. TED TURNER needs to make better decisions.

Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 02:12 AM EST

Clearly, CNN is trying to be as bad as Fox News so it can steal some of its viewers.

Denise Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:49 AM EST

Hey, maybe The View just got a catch in Soledad.

Denise Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:46 AM EST

Bad bad bad bad bad. I watch them EVERY morning with my coffee. I just adore those two. I'm very bummed and I suspect I'll be re-discovering the Today Show. Bleh, I'll so miss them. It was a perfect way to start my day.

Stephen Colbert Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 12:43 AM EST

CNN, you are now officially "Dead To Me"
I'm wagging my whole hand at this decision!

Fatima Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 11:00 PM EST

This is a travesty! You get punished for being poised, confident and intelligent? Soledad is by far my favorite TV news personality. I refuse to watch these generic folk.

anonymous Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 09:36 PM EST

I am so saddened by this. Soledad ROCKS. Such a cool and accessible reporter. The woman says what was on her mind, smart as a whip and wasn't a robot. Just a note.. Hemmer didn't defect to Fox, he was canned by the idiots at CNN. I wasn't crazy about Miles, I missed Bill but he is for sure better than John Roberts....UGHHHHH!

I don't like this. I miss Carol Lin and now Soledad. Maybe it's time to switch channels.

Lori Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 09:06 PM EST

I'm hugely disappointed by this. I've been watching Soledad since she hosted the weekend edition of the "Today" show. She was a joy to watch then and got even better on CNN. I hope Soledad can go somewhere else where she's appreciated. I know I'll watch her.

cidigi Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 08:55 PM EST

This is sad news. But CNN has been doing this for years. Most of their
really good people don't last too
long anymore....

Solidad? Please... she was a breath of fresh air. She makes Katie Couric look like an amateur. And John Roberts? Hmmm.... didn't he do MTV back in the dinosaur days?

renie Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 08:35 PM EST

Stephen Colbert isnt going to be happy.

Richard Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 07:01 PM EST

Say it isn't So(ledad)!

Grulg Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 06:39 PM EST

Too bad-she's great. John Roberts-well I always thought he should have gotten Dan Rather's old seat. Oh well.

Janice Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

They should've kept the Hemmer-Soledad team intact. He was funny in that nerdy guy way, and accessible, and she's whipsmart ... and doesn't have katie couric's scary fucshia lipstick or diane sawyer's stiffness. she's a working mom who was both hardhitting AND up on pop culture.

Laurie Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 05:40 PM EST

I am have been dying to see more generic middle aged white guys in TV. Thank God my prayers have been answered.

AD Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 05:24 PM EST

Boooo CNN. Love Soledad. Back in my younger days I would always catch Soldad and Hemmer (before he betrayed journalism and defected to Fox News) on American Morning. What a shame there are so many shows given to such awful newcasters as Nancy Grace, Glenn Beck, Scarborough, Tucker, etc. and not to real talent like Soledad.
