On The Scene: Idol's Top 7

Apr 18, 2007, 11:13 AM | by Shirley Halperin

Categories: 'American Idol', Reality TV

Blake_l I have to say, Idol's dreaded country show wasn't nearly as torturous as I expected it to be. Maybe that's because I had a great seat. Tucked away in a dark corner with a soft makeshift barricade at my side. I had the perfect view and plenty of elbow room. All the better for me to take notes for you!

So let's get started. Constantine Maroulis was a surprise audience member last night. He and actress Mackenzie Mauzy, with whom he shares a storyline on The Bold and the Beautiful, told me they just walked into the Idol studio following their own taping on the other side of the CBS Television City lot. Constantine has completed four episodes of the daytime soap, he said proudly, and is planning on sticking around L.A. for a while. I read up on the role a bit. Apparently, Constantine plays a music producer guy who becomes obsessed with Mauzy's character, Phoebe, presumably a singer. I'm not sure how the soap schedule works, but I imagine they'll air sometime soon. Constantine also sang the praises of his Idol cohort, season 4 runner-up Bo Bice, saying how much he loves Bo's theme for Blades of Glory.

Of course, you saw that Idol started on a somber note. The audience was prepped for this. About 12 minutes before airtime, Idol stage manager Debbie announced to the room that the show's opening would be different tonight, per Ryan's request, to acknowledge the fatal shootings at Virginia Tech. "So many people watch us that he felt it was necessary to say something," she explained.

Perhaps that eerie silence during the countdown and opening theme was what set the weird tension tonight. Or maybe it's because the competition is finally heating up. Then again, once Sanjaya enters the picture, any shred of credibility is completely lost again. But by far, the crankiest guy in the room was Simon. As Phil kicked off his tribute to Keith Urban, Simon didn't even glance at the performance happening directly behind him. I would even say he looked annoyed, but gave Phil a glowing review nevertheless.

Next up: Jordin, wearing a $600 dress, I later learned. And she did look smashing in it. Something I noticed: there were way more signs for Jordin than any other contestant (see the stand-out signs listed below). She really does seem to have the strongest fan base out of the girls. If Melinda and LaKisha cancel each other out, this girl's destined for the crown, as Simon noted.

While Ryan read Jordin's digits, Sanjaya made his entrance stage right. It's amazing how, whenever he emerges for the first time, you can hear an audible chuckle throughout the room. Sort of like what you're probably doing at home but louder. Yet the people love him, and Sanjaya looked decidedly comfortable before launching into his attempt to "make Bonnie Raitt proud." It was something to talk about, all right. And by all means, do it here. I should point out that LaKisha and Chris, who were standing offstage waiting for their cue, were also visibly amused by Sanjaya's performance.

Simon's critique was, of course, the biggest dis of the night. And the longest of the judges' comments, so much so that Simon needed a refill of Pellegrino in his judging table cup once he was through ranting. But apparently, he wasn't quite finished, as LaKisha also got a verbal lashing from the judges' table. Is it just me who hears that clock ticking?

Speaking of, it seems this season's Idol heartthrob may be slipping. Chris had a rough ride tonight, and Simon certainly let him have it. Though I barely heard the exchange, thanks to the crowd's cacophonous booing and hissing, you could tell it hit hard. Even Melinda, off to the side, was clutching her hands in trepidation and listening closely. It seemed to rattle her nerves a touch, too. Before kicking off her performance, the band fiddler instructed Melinda to take a deep breath, which she did dutifully. But the crowd was still showing Mindy Doo the love, getting up on their feet in solidarity. Still, it was nothing compared to the shrieks that Blake (pictured) got hit with once he hit the stage. This mostly-female audience may not have known the song "When The Stars Go Blue," which was actually originally written and recorded by alt-country star Ryan Adams (Tim McGraw included his version on last year's Tim McGraw Reflected: Greatest Hits Vol. 2), but they sure were digging it.

I had to head out before the final bow to catch Dancing With the Stars next door, but running between stages, I got some nifty shots of the contestants greeting their public, as they do every week (FYI — autograph and picture seekers wait an hour and a half for this brief fan moment). Check them out here.

I leave you with… the signs of the times (God, help us all.)

"Phillin' Blessed"
"I Ache For Blake"
"Dallas Loves Divas"
"Sanjaya, your [sic] my cowboy. Giddy Up!"
"I Have an Achy Blake-y Heart"
"Don't Know Why-a, We Love Sanjaya"

And my favorite, which was a T-shirt: "I'm With Pitchy"

Why does every AI forum turn into a Constantine hate/love site?
In case you haven't noticed, it has been two years since he has been on the show. Let's get back to talking about how wonderful Jordin is.

Angie babyfishmouth Sat, Apr 21, 2007 at 08:39 PM EST

Syracuse. I meant Syracuse. I guess the Lithium is affecting my memory.

OH Constantine! I wish I had something better to do than obsess about you 24/7 but I don't! PLEASE! Remember Saratoga? Did that mean NOTHING to you???

Ep Sato Thu, Apr 19, 2007 at 10:48 AM EST

I have very mixed feelings about Sanjaya's ouster. On the one hand, he had a lot of fun and demonstrated a youthful passion for singing. On the other hand, it would have broken my heart to see him last another week while sending a talent like Kiki home.

The upside to country night is that we saw where a lot of these signers could end up. Melinda's going to sell a million records whether or not she wins. Chris will be able to make $$ as a male model. Jordin Sparks has a future as a singer or teen superstar. Phil now looks like he could be a hit country rocker, Blake has the 311 crowd on lock, Kiki's got a future in gospel, and Sanjaya? Sanjaya's got a future as a teen hearthrob in a sitcom or musical (High School Musical 2, for example).

To see Sanjaya's tears made me feel sad for the guy. Awful as he was, he was a goodhearted kid who clearly felt lucky to be there.

Lord help me, I've become an American Idol fan.

Matt Thu, Apr 19, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

Godspeed, Sanjaya. I shall miss thee.

How dare you mention Sanjaya and Constantine in the same sentence...and to infer that Constantine is gay...I have seen him
in concert and he is magic on stage but one on one he is a little shy..
he is a friendly great guy with talent
beyond belief...he rocks and he also can sing any thing...which is important in the music business...

It's past time for Sanjaya to go. But now the viewers can concentrate on the REAL talent.

jenjen Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 09:13 PM EST

YAY!!!! Now I can start watching again.

covertanjou Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 09:05 PM EST

He's gone! He's gone! YAY! It's a about freaking time!!!

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 09:02 PM EST

DING DONG, SANJAYA'S GOING HOME!!!!

Dio_K Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 08:51 PM EST

This whole Sanjaya thing bothers me -- look how much of this board has been dedicated to him.
I'm torn. Can you imagine listening to his singing on the radio? 98% of humans over 15 would hear it and ask, "what the f*** is that?"
But on the other hand, who else is interesting? Okay, Jordin is cute, Blake is "hep" and Melinda is just damn good. But Kiki is, well, kind of weird. Chris is dull, dull, dull. Phil seems sweet but dull & a little weird. (the best of both worlds!) I truly do not mean to be unkind, but charisma is very low this season. So So keeping Sanjaya around gives us something to talk about.

Michael Jackson Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 08:43 PM EST

Dear Sanjaya, OMG, i didn't know Constantine was in the audience. If I have known I would have instructed you to make goo goo eyes on him like he does and sway your hips to his side because you two are so...you know... birds of the same feather...gay-fully sway together! Love, Michael.

sam Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 07:45 PM EST

And that bandana was a really bad look for him---although I do remember wearing something like that back in the seventies (it didn't do much for me, either).

sam Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 07:43 PM EST

Sorry, I did not mean to say that you hated him. But I have noticed a lot of really bad stuff going toward this kid and I feel sorry for that. No, I am not a fan of his--but I am a mother and I think that every 17 year old is vulnerable, even when they don't act that way.

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 07:38 PM EST

Sam, I don't hate Sanjaya. Hate is a strong word. I dislike him intensely because he is totally smirkin and not workin. Last night's performance was a painful example of that. Please tell me your hair is not wrapped up in a bandana at this moment.

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 07:34 PM EST

Brainiac, you're absolutely right! That Hung dude was the uber stinkiest contestant!

sam Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 07:15 PM EST

Each season there have been singers who last quite a while and everybody wonders why--you know their names. Sanjaya is no worse than they were. I don't think that he is smirking and not working--I think that he is a kid enjoying all of the attention that he is getting and doing the best he can with some rather serious limitations. I suspect that the producers and Ryan are encouraging him to be a bit defiant with the judges. Again, I don't see the need to hate a 17 year old kid who was promoted by the judges and the producers of this show.

Rori Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 07:11 PM EST

Sanjaya is a fine young man. I luff him.

Constantine Maroulis is a GREEK GOD.

Brainiac Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 06:53 PM EST

I think the real question we have to ask is why the heck the judges picked so many mediocre (and awful) contestents for the top 24? I personally wouldn't have let Sanjay come to Hollywood - even his sister would have been a better choice. It's true that Chris is technically better than Sanjaya and has more vocal capabilities, but I can tolerate Sanjaya's voice better. I just really, really can't stand nasal voices (you should hear me rip Nelly Furtado!). I don't think it's Howard Stern making Sanjaya last, I think some little kids really like him (why, I don't know) and also lots of regular viewers enjoy watching him make a fool of himself. It makes for good TV! And anyway, A. pirate, I can think of one singer technically worse than Sanjaya - William Hung. (Maybe? No? Okay.)

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 06:22 PM EST

A reason to dislike Sanjaya is because his presence on the show at this point is an insult to the competition. Clear and simple, he's a joke and nowhere near talented enough to be on that stage. He's also an insult to the other competitors who are working their butts off to stay on the show, and this doofus isn't even trying anymore, all the while smirking at the judges because he knows he's making a joke of them. Again, thanks Howard Stern, you jerk.

sam Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 06:17 PM EST

There is no reason to hate Sanjaya--he is trying to have his time in the spotlight just like the others. And wasn't Taylor the favorite of VFTW for a while last season? I thought that Kiki was very good--if she was "yelling," so was Jordin. I think that they are trying to reduce the number of women and they have decided that Jordin should win because she is young. Idol always seems to like the women who sing the loudest anyway (Kelly Clarkson). What is wrong with this season is that there is nobody that I am waiting to hear (for me, it was Bo and Chris the last two seasons). I really don't care who wins--how many others feel that way and are voting for Sanjaya to amuse themselves? Why are most of the finalists so average? Sanjaya is not the cause--he is the symptom.

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 06:09 PM EST

To Brainiac: People all have different tastes in music, but that's not the point. As Simon keeps reiterating, this is a SINGING competition. Honestly, how is Chris a worse singer than Sanjaya? Chris can hold a note; Sanjaya can't (see final note of last night's performance). Chris is putting effort into the competition; Sanjaya clearly is not (again, see last night's smirky performance...what a JOKE!). Chris does not need to rely on sad hair acrobatics every week. Chris does not deserve to go home before Mr. Ponyhawk, nasal singing or not. Why would you think Sanjaya is a better singer than ANYONE? Clearly most of the people voting for him don't, or they would've picked Chris at their votefortheworst.com poster child. At least Chris is still in the competition by his own merit, not because of some cheap knuckleheaded publicity stunt (thanks, Howard Stern, you idiot).

To A. pirate from Brainiac Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

I think Chris is worse, that doesn't mean I'm deaf - I just have different taste than you. I can't stand nasal voices (as Simon correctly pointed out). I do agree that Sanjaya is bad, though. He shouldn't have even been selected for the top 24. I think the judges put them there so they would have someone to criticize and laugh at. They probably thought he'd last a week or two in the earlier round. Little did they know they'd created a monster...

Daisy01 Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 04:39 PM EST

In reference to Chris offering his condolences to Virginia Tech and Simon rolling his eyes;I bet the producers of AI saw that, and weren't happy with Simon. They prob told him to say the judges also offer their thoughts and support, which he did awkwardly after Blake's performance. AI would be in hot water if people thought Simon didn't take this tradgedy seriously.

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

Another thing about Sanjaya's "success" is, what record company is going to give this kid a recording contract knowing that the vast majority of people voting for him actually hate him? I agree wholeheartedly with your top 4 prediction, kirz10!

kirz10 Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

If I were Sanjaya, I would be too embarassed to continue. Who wants to say they lasted on AI because votefortheworst.com supported them? He should do the right thing and drop out so that one of the talented others have a chance.

BTW, the final four should be (in no particular order): Blake, Jordin, Melinda and Phil.

Thoughts?

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 04:14 PM EST

Oh, and were you about to lose your dinner too over Ryan's "Love the head wrap, get out your bandanas, America!" comment? Who in their right mind would want to look as ridiculous as Mr. Ponyhawk???

EP Sato Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 04:09 PM EST

A.pirate, you make a good point. Halfway through Sanjaya's performance I had to ask myself if he was being terrible on purpose. IS he TRYING to be bad? Because the smirk on his face last night hinted to me that the one most in on the joke is Sanjaya himself. And that Milli Vanilli/ gerardo circa 1990 Erika Badu hairwrap was one of the worst bits of styling ever to be shown on TV (not THE worst, Bjork's stork dress still wins that prize).

A. pirate Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

Sanjaya was even more pathetic than usual this week, and for the first time, I was 100% behind everything Simon said to him. ("Utterly horrendous"--LOVE IT!) This kid is riding a wave of Howard Stern freaks voting for him, he thinks he's invincible when he's just ridiculous ("Welcome to the world of Sanjaya"??? Kill me!), and now it's obviously that he isn't even trying anymore in this competition. And somebody should put his hair stylist in jail. He's the worst thing ever to happen to this show, and Brainiac thinks Chris is worse?? Are you deaf?? The sad thing is, Chris is probably going to go home tonight while this Sanjaya moron will go on and on and on to continue torturing us for for several more weeks. All I can say is thank God for my DVR so I can fast forward over the reeking garbage heap that is Sanjaya.

jamsw01 Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 03:51 PM EST

Just want to say one thing about Chris Richardson's comments about the Virginia Tech tragedy. While the timing was poor and awkward, I have no doubt that he was sincere. I grew up in Virginia Beach, which is next to the city where Chris is from and is one of seven cities that make up Hampton Roads, and I graduated from high school just two years before Chris did. I know probably close to 30 people who went to or are still at Virginia Tech and I know anybody who goes to school in that area can say the same. Especially since Chris played football in high school, he likely knew people who played college football at Tech. So the timing may have been off but I have no doubt in my mind that he was sincere and that he actually knows and cares about people on that campus.

Sally Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 03:35 PM EST

I almost fell out my chair laughing at Sanj's crack to Simon, I would like him to sing Shiny Happy People - PRECIOUS!

Brainiac Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 03:34 PM EST

To Brainiac, 2:24 - I don't know...weird things happen, and Sanjaya is getting a lot of publicity. Although it's mind-boggling, lots of people (kids 13 and under, mostly) really like him. And he's not exactly the worse singer ever - like I mentioned earlier, I think Chris is worse. I am glad the judges called on him for being nasal. As for his sincerity, I do doubt it. Well, maybe I'm being harsh. But at the very least, he is guilty of poor taste and akward timing. Anyway, I have a strong feeling that Sanjay will outlast Lakisha. Sanjay's been improving (well, kind of), but Lakisha's been going down hill and losing a lot of steam. Plus, it appears that people are getting sick of her scowl. Kiki needs to lighten up and have some fun; she should actually take a cue from Sanjaya (or better yet, from Melinda, Jordin, Phil, and Blake, real singers who know how to crack a smile and have fun).

Lily Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 03:31 PM EST

Greek men never age well.

lisa Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

Constantine always looks like he's dying for the spotlight regardless. Loser, and in twenty years he'll still be on a soap peddling his sappy music for all of the lonely housewives. lol

Matt Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:54 PM EST

Well, just to be clear, I don't doubt that Chris was sincere. Not at all. I think his comment was totally heartfelt & honest. I'm just saying, it wasn't the best time to make those comments. Although he's from Virginia, EVERYONE shares his sentiments. And that's they collectively made a comment at the top of the show. At the time Chris made his comment, he probably just didn't realize that he may be influencing votes... but Simon did, as did I (& others). Hell, I rolled my eyes at home too, but that was less about the actual comment & more about the way people at home might misconstrue that & feel the need to vote for him out of sympathy.

April Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

Constantine looked awful. So depressing to see someone that was so gorgeous not age well.

Steve Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

"I think that Simon DID roll his eyes at Chris' comments about Virgina Tech... but with all due respect, I think it was rather justified."

I agree. I took it as Simon rolling his eyes at Chris's USE of the tragedy (which was shameless), and not at the tragedy itself.

EP Sato Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

Agreed with Matt. Just like John Edwards INSISTS he wasn't going for the sympathy vote with his wife's cancer, Chris played like he was really feeling for the people of VT. I think he's just bottomfeeding for votes.

And while I like Simon, his statement led me to believe he had no idea what he was talking about. He didn't even mention the school or anything about what happened, he just called it "the tragedy".

Matt Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:29 PM EST

I've got to agree with Tom, Carter, et al. I think that Simon DID roll his eyes at Chris' comments about Virgina Tech... but with all due respect, I think it was rather justified. I don't think Chris' comments came at the appropriate time. This is, after all, a competition. I think he put himself at an unfair advantage by pleading for sympathy votes as they were giving out his phone number. If he wanted to make a comment (if what was said at the top of the show wasn't enough), he should have arranged to do something at the end of the show. I'm sure EVERYONE shares his sentiments, but the time in which he said it was kind of cheap.

To Brainiac Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:24 PM EST

Calm it down there, buddy.

Sanjaya will be gone this week or next week. Idol will NEVER let him make the top five. No way!

Brainiac Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

Okay, so we know Sanjaya is going to make it to the top 4. He's going to outlast Lakisha, for Heaven's sake! (By the by, Simon's comment was going a bit too far. Randy's karaoke critiqe was spot on, for a change.) Chris is by far the worst singer left and either he or Lakisha is going home tonight. Chris doesn't have any friends at Virginia Tech - the Hooters manager probably doesn't know anybody who has gone on beyond high school with their education, and should have been ashamed of himself for using that tragedy to squeeze out a few more desperately-needed votes.

Simon explains his eye roll thing

Ang Knee Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:16 PM EST

To the person who said 'umm, no,' umm, yes! Sorry. I watched the whole performance on YouTube (mainly to hear Simon's rant). Though not something I'd listen to again, Sanjaya did a nice job. He's definitely not using his voice to its potential, but he clearly knows how to use it, and wasn't nearly as bad as the judges pretended he was.

KJ Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:13 PM EST

oh my college history professor would be proud: sic is a latin tern for "just as that" or some similar translation. It's just as everyone said, it means that the author knows that the quoted text is wrong (usually used with spelling) but the quote is correct from the source.

Abby Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:08 PM EST

Ooooookay. I get it now! Thanks people!

Amanda Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

Abby -- not sure if sic is an acronym or where it comes from, but you always see it in a quote where the original made a mistake (in this case "your" instead of "you're") and the writer wants us to know the mistake was in the original. Basically, it's not Shirley's mistake, the sign was written that way.

kirz10 Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:06 PM EST

sic means that a misspelling is being quoted or some other grammatical error. The sign said "your" when it should've been "you're." We wouldn't want to think a highly respected EW reporter doesn't know how to spell.

whol Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 02:00 PM EST

To the person who said Sanjaya 'controls his voice well...umm, no. He doesn't. He was WAY off.....but I'm vindictive so I want him on for as long as possible.

Blake was not that great tonight...Chris was just bad. Kiki was kind of off too.

Abby Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:57 PM EST

Okay, I have a dumb question. In the sign that reads:

"Sanjaya, your [sic] my cowboy. Giddy Up!"

What does [sic] mean? I've seen it all over and I'm always like, what is that?!

And about Idol, I love Jordin. She is totally gonna win!!

Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:24 PM EST

BTW- I disagreed with the judges about Lakisha-she did really well. Why are people always comparing her directly to Melinda? No one ever really compares Chris to Blake.

so, anyway Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

ZIm sorry, I didnt think Blake was that great & im convinced Jordin is being pimped now. I understand that they'd be the most marketable, Im just saying...

I really hope LaKisha gets a good Gospel career, Phil gets to do a great country thing, and Melinda becomes the next NOra Jones. I guess neither of them will win, but thats ok.

Carter Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Oops... wrote the song title wrong. "When the Stars Go Blue" Knew that didn't sound correct when I typed it before... :P

Stephanie Travitsky Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

I don't think that Blake was off key compared to Sanjaya who sounded as if he was auditioning for the all new Mickey Mouse Club. Blakes version if it was polished up by a vocal coach can be released as a single. It is diverse.

If Phil goes home tonight, he will have one hell of a career in Country. Kiki shouted the song and Chris should stick to Mraz.

lola Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:03 PM EST

I just watched Blake's performance and he was awful, like seriously off-key. Sorry, but he massacred that Ryan Adams song. My ears were going blue.

Jaded1 Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

That was the worst backstage "on the scene" to date. Are you sure you were really there? Absolutely no dirt. It was just basically a poor "review" of the evening. Bring back Adam.....he would have told us what went on with Simon's eyes!

Carter Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

Chris was awful last night - as he is each week. *HE* made his VA Tech comment look like a pathetic attempt at sympathy votes by forcing it in there right after his *stupid* comment to Simon about "nasally" being a singing style. *I* rolled my eyes. Not surprised Simon did. For the record, I do think he meant it, but he may have sunk his own ship. At least Chris remembered his words this week, which is only the second time out of six weeks.

By the way, no one on the show said Tim McGraw wrote 'When Skies Go Blue'. They just said he sang it, so get your panties out of a wad, lol. However, it was Blake's worst performance. The song is a very simple and pretty song, and he made it busy and forced with his extra runs and such. I love Blake, but that was weak for him. Melinda was good. Jordin was incredible. Lakisha was very subpar for her. Never mind about Sanjaya. Phil was suprisingly good and finally got good praise. He's been given a harder than deserved time so far.

Amanda Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

I totally agree with Robin Sparkles. I thought Chris was ready to cry as well. I'm prone to giving people the benefit of the doubt, and I'm thinking he was already upset about VTech, and the criticism was the icing on the cake -- prompting his rudeness to Simon. He's normally a very nice kid, at least onscreen. I actually liked his performance, too (not as much as others, but thought it was not as horrible as the judges thought).

Didn't think Lakisha was as bad as everyone thought, either. I liked the passion at the end and the control at the beginning.

However, Blake was my boy for the night. Phil was probably better at country, but I love Blake's ballads.

Overall, I thought everyone but the horrid Sanjaya did very well, which is why I'm hoping he's finally tossed out tonight. That kid is pretty cocky, with very little to back it up.

Ryan Adams Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:51 PM EST

Finally - someone gave me some credit.

dma69 Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:32 PM EST

How does one manage to ruin a Bonnie Raitt song? If this doesn't get Sanjaya voted off, then this show is doomed. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this is a TALENT competition, not a pretty boy pageant.

Delon Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:24 PM EST

OMG, Ed ! Which one is the most homoerotic pic of Blake? I need to see it!!!!

Lee Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

Shirley, Simon NEVER watches the performance. It wasn't just Phil. I'm glad Simon said something about Sanjaya, too. This is just ridiculous. And Chris, yes, nasally is a style of singing -- one that no one wants to hear. His performance was physically painful to listen to!!

Robin Sparkles Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:18 PM EST

If you have Idol Tivo'd last night, go back and look at Chris's eyes. I though the boy was going to break down and cry, he was all wellin' up! I don't think his shout-out at the end was a cheap ploy for votes at all. Boy had some emotions goin' on.

Ed Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

That is the best homoerotic picture of Blake....THANK YOU EW!

kat Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

I didn't notice Simon rolling his eyes, but if he did it could easily have been in response to Chris's comments that "nasally is a style of singing" (or something like that) after Simon had criticized him. Chris quickly followed that up with his sympathies for Va Tech, so the eye-roll could have been for either. I'd prefer to give Simon the benefit of the doubt; I don't think even he is callous enough to brush off this tragedy.

Tom Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

I'm glad Simon rolled his eyes. I didn't buy Chris's tribute one minute. It was a cheap ploy for votes. I'm sure Simon was trying to be sensitive when he made his comments about Virginia at the end of the night, but his eye-rolling didn't strike me as being rude. He was expressing what some of us thought about Chris's comments. Not to mention Chris R. was rude and belligerent to Simon before making his comments.

Joe C Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:08 PM EST

I say again, if Sanjaya gets voted off, I lose interest in the show. He's the main reason I'm tuning in. Having said that, I maintain that Jordin will win, but go Sanjaya!

Winona Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

Personally, my favorite sign was "Jordan Sparkles" - if you love her so much, how about learning how to spell her first name?!

Nic Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

I also saw Simon roll his eyes and was horrified! I love Chris Richardson, but I agree that his performance was not very good last night. But, I think he was altogether off last night - snapping at the judges, bad performance, etc. I'm live in Virginia, as is Chris, and seeing that he is college aged, I am sure he was very very very much affected by the Tech shootings. I think that was a big part of his problem last night.

Zod Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:50 AM EST

Mindy Doo fan: yeah, I did see Simon roll his eyes, which is why I think when they came back to Simon the next time, he mentioned how they were all thinking about what happened at VT. Maybe the producers noticed this too, and had him rectify it before it became a big controversy.

Mindy Doo fan Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:44 AM EST

I don't know if anyone else caught this but I could swear that after Chris Richardson was snotty back to Simon and then mentioned the VA Tech tragedy the camera switched to Simon and I'm almost positive that as Simon was turning away from the stage he looked at the other judges and rolled his eyes. Did anyone else see that or was it just my imagination??

Ang Knee Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:43 AM EST

"I'm with Pitchy" -- hilarious. Great report!

All I saw of Sanjaya's performance was the recap clip at the end of the show. What voice he has, he controls pleasantly well. Very clever song choice, too. He knows why he's there.

In the spirit of not giving people credit for songs they did not write, Bonnie Raitt did not write Somethin' to Talk About. If I'm not mistaken, Shirley Eickhart (sp) did.

ME Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

Thank you, thank you, thank you for letting everyone know that the gorgeous Tim McGraw song Blake sang is actually a gorgeous Ryan Adams track. And really? Blake was merely okay to me. Now Jordin Sparks. She's in it to win it. She made time stand still with that performance of Broken Wings.

Lori Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:40 AM EST

I was hoping Shirley would give some insight into a very awkward interaction. After Chris sang, he expressed his sorrow over the VA Tech shootings. As he said this, they showed Simon and he appeared to turn to Paula and roll his eyes. After another performance (Blake's, I believe) Simon gave his critique but then also expressed his sorrow over the shootings. What I'm wondering is, did the producers talk to him during the break, fearing his initial reaction to Chris' comments was insensitive?? Just wondering.

GoddessLu Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:33 AM EST

TOTALLY agreed with RJ's "karaoke" comment to Sanjaya, who has ridden his fifteen minutes so long and hard that they're bone dry.

Karaoke Songs Contestants Should Never EVER Sing:
1) Let's Give Them Something to Talk About; Bonnie Raitt;
2) Hit Me With Your Best Shot, Pat Benetar;
3) Black Velvet, Alannah Myles;
4) Anything by Lynyrd Skynrd or CCR;
5) Fallin' by Alicia Keyes;
6) Anything by Whitney, Celine or Mariah (can't improve it, why bother)...

...any more guys?

Chris R. & Sanjaya should be bottom 2--either one can go home in my book, both are subpar singers. Yea to Phil for finally nailing a performance--I hope you stay out of the bottom for a change. MindyDoo/Jordin/Blake all rocked last night (in that order).

Diane Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

Sanjaya gives me an ear ache. I can sing better than him, and I flunked chorus.

Stephanie Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

I agree, Kayla! Props to Simon for FINALLY saying something about this Sanjaya business. It was about time! At first it may have been funny, yes, but now it's just getting ridiculous.

kayla Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

what is the world ws the deal with Ryan attacking Simon for having the nerve to FINALLY say the truth about Sanjaya - that he completely and utterly STANK??

Is Seacrest working with Howard Stern??

nathan Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 11:03 AM EST

Sanjaya will likely make it through again this week, I must say whoever orchestrated the whole "destroy American Idol" thing has done a great job.

DR Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 10:57 AM EST

My take. Phil surprised me. A LOT. For the first time I really felt like he wanted to be there. Good job. May not save him, but good job nonetheless. Jordin was spot on, probably the best performance of the night. Which means she shouldn't win, lol. Ahh, Sanjaya, even he knows he's a joke at this point, but at least Simon put his foot down about how long it's gone on (howvere, he still gets my votes). LaKisha picked the wrong song. It's too iconic, too low for her, and she butchered it. Bottom 3 performance, IMO. Chris wasn't as with it as I would have liked, but there is just something about him I like. It's utterly irrational, I know, but I want him to succeed. But his attitude, both onstage and in print may hurt his chances. Saying "I got Top 10 and can get a contract, so who cares about winning" isn't a god 'tude, Chris. Melinda finall did something young and hip and it worked, and Blake was good for Blake, but I prefer the younger non-ballad Blake.

Justin Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

Thank you for stating that "When Stars Go Blue" is a Ryan Adams song. It had already been covered by the Coors and now Tim McGraw (who I think does not do it justice). It drives me nuts when the wrong people get credit for songs they did not write.

Stephanie Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 10:46 AM EST

"Kiki's" time is definitely up. I was never a fan of her, and couldn't see WHY the judges had her picked as a front runner to win the competition.

On the other hand, I'm completely impressed with Jordin! She's really become a threat to the other contestants, and I can totally see her winning the entire competition now.

EP Sato Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 10:43 AM EST

I thought Phil's performance last night was uncanny! My fiance and I both hate him, but we were blown away by Phil. He sounded like someone who'd be on the radio and who'd be liked by people who normally don't go for his genre. Very impressive, as was the reliable Melinda and the perky amazon Jordin Sparks.

To compare, Sanjaya was AWFUL. I've heard drunken kareoke with more rhythym and tone. Vote for the worst.com has hooked this kid up!

I was unimpressed by Blake, don't understand why Chris is still on stage, and think Kiki's lost her undefeatable status after last night's less than stellar performance.

Is anyone else curious to find out who'll stick around tonight? This is my first results show I am excited for in a long time!

Clovis Wed, Apr 18, 2007 at 10:30 AM EST

I think the judges are just fed up with Sanjaya. It's very unconfortable when they have to critique him. Please put this dude out of his misery and ours for that fact and get him off the damn show! Other then that I was actually suprised how good country night actually was.
