Jeremy Northam, why aren't you a bigger star?

Apr 5, 2007, 12:34 PM | by Mandi Bierly

Categories: Film, Television

Tudors_l Okay, so I haven't actually seen The Tudors yet — if you, like me, don't get Showtime, we can all catch the first two episodes online — but I did spend a recent weekend rewatching Emma on cable. Twice. And after I watched Jeremy Northam (a.k.a. my Mr. Knightley) propose to Gwyneth Paltrow for the second time in 24 hours, I actually sighed to myself, "Where have you been? I've missed you."

A quick trip to his IMDB page confirms that Northam (Sir Thomas More on The Tudors) has, in fact, been "around"— just not in anything that I've bothered to see since Gosford Park. Not sure who to blame for the loss of our connection, which seemed so unbreakable after he wooed me by playing an ex-con posing as Steve Zahn's gay lover in Happy, Texas. Him? Me? Casting agents?

What do you think, PopWatchers? Should Northam be a bigger star with better roles?

My thanks to all of you who posted after hearing the BBC program of some of JN's favorite music. I'm still away from home and dealing with an uncooperative computer; so there was no way I could listen or record, but I enjoyed reading your reactions. Thank you, Alina, for your response to my posting about Emma and Knightly. Doesn't make me any fonder of Emma, but I think you are probably right about Knightly's motives. I'll keep your comments in mind the next time I see the film. You are very perceptive about human nature -- not just on this blog, but others as well.

Linnigee Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 07:00 PM EST

Thanks for the heads-up, anneshirley. We're nearing the 4000 milestone - where are you, Popwatch?

anneshirley Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 06:14 PM EST

Thank you so much!! I'm really happy you liked it!

You know HM asked me to make a Winslow Boy video once.

Anyway this is the 3997th comment!

Linnigee Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 05:54 PM EST

WONDERFUL, anneshirley! Again, a beautiful job. And how generous a dedication, especially to our HM. This one has made a lovely ending to my day. Thank you, thank you!

anneshirley Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 05:16 PM EST

HM and the other lovely ladies!
I have finally finished it!

I reckon this is a new review of Fiona's story:
"...Dad is Simon (played with understated rumpled creepiness by Jeremy Northam, until he cheers up and gets rather smart) and mum is Fiona (played by Gina McKee, who takes understated acting to the levels of a depressed limpet). They are, inevitably - this is a BBC drama about a middle-class English couple - known as Si and Fee..."

Linnigee Mon, Jul 13, 2009 at 01:27 AM EST

Slight case of insomnia here, so I will while away my time by sharing this with you:
W the P audiobooks are recorded by:
Peter Dennis (also performed A. A. Milne onstage)
Jim Broadbent and
Stephen Fry
JN would be in very good compsny and would be as good, or better, than any of them!

Alina Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 06:26 PM EST

Sorry, Linnie, I guess I just read the top of our iceberg! Eeyore and the piglet will do too! :-)) Actually will give him a good opportunity to demonstrate the voice ranges! :-)

gaylec Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 10:27 AM EST

You are very welcome annelise! Glad it arrived safely.

I am warming to the idea of JN reading Pooh, it definitely has merit!

bellissima Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 02:11 AM EST

this was just on the JN yahoo! group:

{{{>Cassie Rose says:
>11 July 2009 at 4:09 am

>Personally, it was the Northam/Paltrow version that introduced me as a young
girl to Jane Austen and opened the door to her for me. Perhaps I, and quite a
few others, I think, feel a great deal of debt towards that version and I don't
think it will ever be toppped, at least not for my generation. I keep thinking
of JLM (Johnny Lee Miller) as Sick Boy in Trainspotting… a great actor yes, but not up to the
caliber of Jeremy Northam's Mr. Knightly. He not only looked really very fine in
period costume, but he WAS Mr. Knightly.
I would also add that his audiobook version of Emma was the first actual Austen
book my sisters and I ever were exposed to. That's a great listen as well!}}}

its from a Jane Austen blogger site.

Linnigee Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 09:50 PM EST

That's so perfect, annelise! But then, dear silly old Pooh is always quotable! I have loved him all my life and I think many an adult who was raised with Pooh and Friends still takes a sneak read from time to time.

annelise79 Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 06:43 PM EST

Found this little excerpt from the book in Winnie's "biography" on answers.com.
OK, ladies, read this, but imagine JN's voice...
"But his arms were so stiff ... they stayed up straight in the air for more than a week, and whenever a fly came and settled on his nose he had to blow it off. And I think - but I am not sure - that that is why he is always called Pooh."

annelise79 Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 06:38 PM EST

First of all, gaylec & Jud---thank you thank you thank you! I received my CD yesterday and went to sleep listening to it last night ;) xoxoxo
Alina ;) I wish I could take credit for "Winnie the Pooh" and "Wind in the Willows", but that was dear Linnie in an earlier post ;) The idea of it tickled me too: JN doing Piglet, Kanga and Roo, Tigger, Pooh and ESPECIALLY Eeyore ;) Would that not be positively adorable? This board would probably crash with all of the mommies wanting to express their "admiration" for JN and his talent if he did something like that for an audiobook ;)

Alina Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 11:24 AM EST

An important message from Joan in Yahoo group:
"Notice the listing order of the actors/actresses. ...
http://enchantedser enityperiodfilms .blogspot. com/2007/ 12/latest- news.html

Glorious 39 (2009)
A mysterious tale set around a traditional British family on the eve of World War Two starring Jeremy Northam, Bill Nighy, Romola Garai, Julie Christie, David Tennant, Eddie Redmayne, Christopher Lee and Hugh Bonneville
Directed by Stephen Poliakoff"
Indeeed, JN is listed the first, and so it should be!

Alina Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 11:14 AM EST

Oh, Annelise, Jeremy playing (OK, OK reading) Winnie The Pooh is hilarious!!! I absolutely love the idea :-))))

annelise79 Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 10:00 AM EST

Jude Law as Hamlet? Hmmmmmm...
I would like to hear JN read Byron. Period. I think that would be smokin' (literally and figuatively ;)
And I agree, HM & Linnie-more Keats and how PRECIOUS would Winnie The Pooh and Wind in the Willows be?! His voice can be so soothing, perfect for children...and their mums;)

bwlass Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 07:31 AM EST

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY IS A GO!
This was talked about last year and the "remake" is finally coming to the big screen with Peter Morgan( The Queen) doing the screenplay...might there be a juicy part for JN? I think he would be too young for the part of Smiley but there are several grand characters.
http://www.movieweb.com/news/NE1k4226s3yL34

Linnigee Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 06:37 AM EST

Big ad in today's NY Times touting Jude Law in Hamlet directed by Michael Grandage. Runs for twelve weeks this fall - previews begin Sept. 12 at the Broadhurst Theatre. They're calling it Donmar New York.
How about a little something starring JN for Donmar NY (better yet, for me, Donmar DC). After all, he's here, isn't he?

Linnigee Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 06:12 AM EST

I guess that's me, HM. Looked it up and am intrigued, so I caved and Amazoned it. Let you know my thoughts when I've read it. Thanks:-)

HM Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 03:59 AM EST

RLS's Memories and Portraits is quite brilliant, for anyone who hasn't tried Stevenson since childhood, btw (plug, plug!!). Though it sounds like our boy will be pretty busy for a fair old while in LA being Dr Pr! Let's hope he's getting on okay with it all, that it's going to be a good quality show and that he is able to give his usual excellent performance.

Hazel Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 09:00 PM EST

According to the Daily Actor website, Miami Trauma is currently in production as of July 9, 2009. This is the first time I've read this and, hopefully, will be able to discover more information!http://www.dailyactor.com/2009/07/tv-shows-currently-shooting-updated-again/

MIAMI TRAUMA

Linnigee Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 03:15 PM EST

I recall very well my grandmother reading Stephenson's Treasure Island aloud to my brother and me. Also, as a child, I read and reread A Child's Garden of Verses. I still have the copy of Treasure Island - mine has illustrations by N.C. Wyeth.

gaylec Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 02:26 PM EST

Oh I love Robert Graves and RL Stevenson! Both would be wonderful choices HM!

Alina Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 02:06 PM EST

yes, poetry will do!! I must say I do find Stevenson slightly passee... Found him boaring even when I read him as a child, but this is just my own opinion.
Forsyte Saga? Would suit him, won't it, plus it is duly long!!

HM Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 01:42 PM EST

In haste, in midst of being 3 places at the one time....having read some Henry James, I would love JN to read some works by my favourite (and good friend of James) RL Stevenson. Or Keats, lots and lots of Keats...bliss! Or Robert Graves, poetry or prose would do it for me!

Linnigee Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 12:39 PM EST

I know I'll think of other books later, but for now - chilren's books: Winnie The Pooh and The Wind In The Willows. They both have a great deal of the gentle humor that JN does so well.

Linnigee Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 11:41 AM EST

Gaylec, I'll bet there were hi-jinks galore on the Happy, Texas set. I also think that Wm. H. Macy was an absolute hoot! Would loved to have been a fly on the wall.
Lemme think for a while about a book for JN to read.

Alina Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 10:14 AM EST

"for" was a typo, sorry

Alina Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 10:12 AM EST

Gaylec I would vote for (1) Wigram in Enigma; (2) Fisk Jr in Dean Spanley; (3) Sir Robert Morton in The Winslow boy. And let us not forget for a classical Mr Knightley!

gaylec Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 09:17 AM EST

OK, here's another topic idea.
What book(s) would you like to see JN read to audio tape?
I'd love to hear him read The French Lieutenant's Woman, by DH Lawrence. Or, something by Hermann Hesse, perhaps my favorite, Demian. Or, in a completely different genre, Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke.

How about you?

gaylec Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 09:15 AM EST

Linnigee, I remember that comment he made about Happy Texas. He repeats those sentiments on the DVD Special Features as well.
I would imagine, with JN's sense of humor, as evidenced by the Tudors bloopers, would have been quite the match for Steve Zahn.
JN's costar, Ally Walker said she could barely work as JN kept her in stitches constantly.

Linnigee Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 08:47 AM EST

Gaylec, having no real clue as to how JN rates his work, I haven't a clue. He did say on BBC that one isn't always the best judge of one's own work - though, privately, he probably does feel that some of his work is better than others. He did say that the film he ENJOYED making the most was Happy, Texas. I think the roles you mentioned are pretty safe bets, though.
I think we're going to think up a few more things to chat about, too, as we certainly are going through a JN info drought!

gaylec Thu, Jul 9, 2009 at 07:46 AM EST

Just a random question, that perhaps might be a fun discussion.
What character do you think JN enjoyed playing the most? Or, what role do you think he considers his finest performance?
I suspect that the answer to both questions might be Sir Robert Morton from The Winslow boy. Or possibly, Fisk Jr. from Dean Spanley.

What do you gals think?

annelise79 Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 07:33 PM EST

You know it lady! No messin' around ;)

Linnigee Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 06:38 PM EST

annelise, you and I together - we'll bust down the cineplex doors!

annelise79 Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 06:09 PM EST

Oh gaylec! Girl, you KNOW it will be good :) I have been waiting for it to come available at my library. It's either very popular of someone around here is hogging it! I cannot WAIT for the FF/PP CD to get here! A new treasure :)
Linnie, may I stampede w/you ? ;) I would LOVE to see JN in wizard's robes. YUMMY!

gaylec Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 05:41 PM EST

Well hurry up and listen linnigee! I need reviews, LOL!
BTW, CD's were mailed out yesterday, let me know when you all get them :)

Linnigee Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 05:28 PM EST

I have it, Gaylec, but sadly I haven't listened to it yet. I read up on it and it ought to be pretty good - how can it not?

gaylec Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 04:49 PM EST

Has anyone listened to the Silver Chair read by JN?

I am in JN audiobook withdrawals and am thinking or ordering it. I'd love to hear some reviews from you ladies!

Linnigee Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 08:08 AM EST

Ooooh, I would create a one-woman stampede to the theater if Jeremy were in Harry Potter!

bwlass Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 07:36 AM EST

Now even Bill Nighy is going to be in a Harry Potter film...what about JN??????? He seems to be the ONLY Brit actor waiting for a call.

Alina Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 11:34 AM EST

Interesting site with discussion about Thomas More portrayal by Jeremy and Paul Scoffield
"...could write a book about Sir Thomas More, but here is an overview of this courageous man and a video of clips from “The Tudors” - I thought that Jeremy Northam was excellent as More..."
http://www.theanneboleynfiles.com/sir-thomas-more/1458/

Alina Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 09:15 AM EST

Absolutely, we deserve a party and so does Jeremy!! Last time he had his head crowned, will we see a halo this time?? :-)))

Linnigee Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 07:03 AM EST

Oops, I see you're not using the Yahoo address, Gaylec. Beg pardon. Apologies for butting in, but I really want anneshirley to get the disc!
Another subject: I see we're up to 3955 posts here. Wonder if EW is going to give us a party when we reach 4000!

gaylec Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 07:00 AM EST

Thanks Linnigee. Still no address for her. I am going to mail the others out this AM, and I'll just have to mail hers when she gets her address to me.

Linnigee Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 06:35 AM EST

Gaylec, I hope anneshirley got her address to you last night, because this morning I got a message on my screen that Yahoo email is temporarily down - so, if you haven't heard from her, that may be the reason why.:-)

gaylec Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 04:54 PM EST

anneshirley, I still need your address.

I'd like to mail these all at once, tomorrow AM, so if you see this post, please shoot me your address.

annelise79 Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 04:13 PM EST

Alina--too precious :) I love it! Shooting you my address, gaylec. xo!

Alina Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 01:28 PM EST

Trying to post for the second time!
Gaylec, many thanks - you are very kind - I have recorded the broadcast from radio onto a trivial tape!
As for Michelle's very good idea - why not to e-mail private passions at privatepassions@bbc.co.uk
Even if they do not organise downloads or distribution - it will be a good feedback for the program!

Alina Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 01:05 PM EST

Gaylec, thank you - you are very kind! I managed to record it from radio to a trivial tape, it is fine - do not worry.
Regarding Michelle's idea, why not to e-mail them - the private passion program? Even if they do not organise access/distribution of the program, it will be a good feedback. Here is the address: privatepassions@bbc.co.uk

Michelle Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 11:03 AM EST

Hazel, a very big heartfelt thank you for supplying the BBC3 link. I seriously had my doubts for connection here in the states b/c I had trouble in the past, but the link worked like a dream. Listening to those beautiful pieces and hearing him explain his selections so eloquently, ended my very exhausting holiday weekend on a such lovely note (pun intended!) Thanks again Hazel and thank you Jeremy...

If you are looking for post email ID it would be gpc200@cox.net.

anneshirley Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 09:09 AM EST

Sorry gaylec, its maybe a stupid question but whats your name on Yahoo group?

Thanks!

gaylec Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 09:05 AM EST

I was just thinking this AM, that BBC3 is missing a golden opportunity. They should offer these broadcasts for MP3 download, heck, I'd be happy to pay a fee for that privilege, as I am sure most of you would. Maybe we should all write to them.

gaylec Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 08:57 AM EST

annelise, I am not a pro by any means, I am a dabbler. I just had a few fun/ exciting opportunities is all. I no longer play regularly, too caught up in doing other things, like making dolls!LOL
Alina, if you want a CD email me.

HM Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 08:56 AM EST

I was listening (again, again!) to PP in the gym this morning and I noticed a friend looking at me and smiling. I realised I'd stopped hefting the weights and was staring into space, miles away!!!
I have what seem like hundreds of rehearsals ahead of our choir's summer concert on Saturday so I may not be around much this week, but will pop in from time to see what's going on. have a good week!

gaylec Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 08:40 AM EST

annelise, email me your address so I can send you a copy of Femme Fatales/Private Passions.

Alina Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 08:36 AM EST

Annelise, Gaylec and HM, thank you for your kind words and for such a good sistership here. I am still under impression!!

leslie Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 07:07 AM EST

??????????? the tales just keep growing on this board.

annelise79 Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 06:53 AM EST

Dang gaylec! That is soooooo cool! My Pa was not as lucky to go pro, although in his heart, I know he wished he had given my Grandfather the finger and went to music school. So being a proper depression era kid, he ended up getting a degree in Engineering because that was what was expected of him. But he played wherever, whenever he could with local combos and other frustrated buddies and those were some of the times he was the happiest. So in essence, he was a music lover and darned fabulous drummer at heart, plus he had perfect pitch...it makes me sad to think about what could have been for him. But I'm sure he would have loved trading stories with ya! He had some really cool encounters when he was in HS and college due to an uncle of his owning a hotel in NYC that was a jazz hot spot. The lesson that taught me was to go for it, even though HE pooh poohed MY decision to become a makeup artist :) I was/am determined not to have any regrets!

leslie Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 06:29 AM EST

???????????????

gaylec Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 07:59 PM EST

"PS-gaylec--Oscar Peterson AND Ella Fitz, together, live...my Daddy would have been on cloud 9 (he was a jazz drummer:) What a great experience! Amazing. xo to all! And welcome, Jules :)"

Yeah, I was pretty amazingly lucky, as I have been with many of my first hand jazz musician experiences.
I am also a jazz drummer. Not saying I am all that good ( I am not) but I do have a few recordings under my belt, that get picked up on underground, occasionally.
I would have loved to have shared the Ella/Oscar experience with another, who would have appreciated it!

Who did your Dad play with? When I was a student, the Jazz world was sort of small, I'd love to know who he backed.

My background comes from Latin drumming. Long story, but my primary tutor was Al Torre (your Dad would probably know that name). Lead drummer for Cal Tjader in the late 50's and early 60's.

OK, now I am WAY off topic. sorry luvs....

gaylec Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 05:30 PM EST

Hi gals, here is update status on "copies".
Darling Jud has burned five CD's with both, Femmes Fatales and this mornings BBC3 programme.
I have three mailing addresses, as follows:
Joan
Kath
Linda

IF, you are not on that list, and want one, email me, with your St. address (Annelise? Alina? etc).

Not that we can't make more, BUT, Jud doesn't want to make a practice of this, again, for potential copyright infringements.

At any rate, 5 are set to go, so two slots available, first come, first served.

annelise79 Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 05:18 PM EST

Ooooohhhhh to all of my blissed-out Cisters! What precious comments! I love seeing everyone so happy! Alina, I left you a post at IMDB :) Sooooooo sweet! Alas, I was not able to listen to the entire program, due to work (BOOOOOO!) but what I did hear was intelligent, thoughtful and soulful. Just makes him seem that much more fantastic. Can't wait to listen to it in full in the next few days when I can really focus. PS-gaylec--Oscar Peterson AND Ella Fitz, together, live...my Daddy would have been on cloud 9 (he was a jazz drummer:) What a great experience! Amazing. xo to all! And welcome, Jules :)

jules Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 04:35 PM EST

Hi - I'm a long-time lurker to this page, but thought I ought to say thanks for all the links you ladies leave on this blog. I have just listened to Private Passions on BBC iPlayer. I loved the Keith Jarret piece and will probably try and track it down. (The benefit of listening on iPlayer is you get the picture on screen of JN as well, while he's speaking!). I loved the Words and Music programme a few months back, too, especially the Spenser's Fairae Queen poem - sublime.

HM Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 03:30 PM EST

I have PP all recorded, so let me know if you are not otherwise catered for by emailing me. You can find my email address at the yahoo group.

HM Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 12:37 PM EST

I spotted the chamber music comment too, Hazel, and in fact his choice of Schubert was one of my favourites. I need to listen again (and again and again!) to soak it all in. What an intelligent man he is, I wish I could be spending that evening around the table with that glass of wine, chatting till the time/wine/day ran out.....

Alina Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 10:49 AM EST

HM, I think all the ladies on this site are "good fairies"! :-))
I also liked the way he appreciates friendship. This type of human affection is often underrated in favour of desire, infatuation, lust, and yet it is the most selfless and beautiful of human communications. I absolutely agree with JN that there is nothing better than have a good fierce discussion with friends around table (and I would add, with a glass of wine)on everything - from global to trivial - and end up, as he said, more refined, and I would say - more enriched, emotionally and intellectually.

Hazel Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 09:16 AM EST

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lfm37/Private_Passions_Jeremy_Northam/

Just got this from Google Alerts. Wonderful interview and wonderful music! Noticed he said that, as he got older, he appreciated chamber music more.

gaylec Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 09:06 AM EST

I just finished listening. That was a most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday morning over coffee.
I particularly enjoyed how relaxed JN seemed, and loved his soft laughter interspersed throughout the conversation, about a subject he is obviously passionate about.
I loved hearing that he might well have enjoyed being a jazz pianist. Now that's a man after my own heart!
I am a jazz junkie, and there is nothing more exciting than a skilled jazz pianist with a pumping rhythm section underneath him (or her.)
I also loved his choices of the Earl Hines and Billy Taylor piece, along with the Ella Fitzgerald/Oscar Peterson piece.
When I was in college, I worked for the music department, I was their "gofer", and it helped finance my education. During that time was lucky enough to hear Ella and Oscar perform together live, on campus (UC Santa Cruz, I am a banana slug ;))at a Jazz fest the music department put on. And they were astounding!
Lovely,lovely people as well.

HM Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 08:08 AM EST

Alina, I agree with what you say, there is a softness, a kindness of manner, a gentle good humour, that I find completely disarming and very, very attractive. I adore the way he was chuckling away as he spoke, he was so obviously enjoying himself, and on his own territory. I was imagining him going in to record something else, but with his PP list in his pocket, and repeatedly suggesting that he'd be happy to do it, that he was all prepped, anytime would suit! The Radio 4 equivalent, Desert Island Discs, is much more interrogative in style, much less gentle and friendly, something JN would perhaps not enjoy, I think. There, they really do expect the guest to spill their soul for public consumption, and the music is there to aid and illustrate the guest's revelations. Sort of music therapy, which I imagine some guests enjoy and others endure. Thank you, good fairy, for your thoughtful comments!

Linnigee Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 07:33 AM EST

Same for me, HM - save for J>S> Bach, with whom I have been seriously in love since I was quite young - would listen to my recordings of Wanda Landowska (on the harpsichord) playing The Well Tempered Clavier for hours. Another fave was Albert Schweitzer playing Bach on the organ.
It says on the BBC site that I have, that the PP with JN should be available on iPlayer "shortly" - we shall see!

gaylec Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 07:32 AM EST

HM, whew, I panicked too soon. It's available now.
I'll get Jud to save it and burn a few CD's.
Now, must go lie down and let my blood pressure recover, LOL.

Alina Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 07:31 AM EST

I am going to say here something too private for my own liking….
I joined Jeremy Northam community, and particularly, inhabited this delightful site for a “Samaritan” reason – to play a “good fairy” role and to support a wonderful, seemingly underrated, actor. I accepted he was handsome, but I did not have any, let us say, more intense feelings towards Jeremy Northam, having passed my teenage years… :-)))
Now, I am going to phrase it very carefully…
Having heard his conversation today on Radio 3 in a whole package with wonderful music, I felt I had a glimpse of his soul, and what I saw was beautiful… He sounded complete, kind and, as sophisticated as his musical tastes, and also so real, natural.
I can understand that it must be easy to fall for him in real life…

HM Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 07:25 AM EST

gaylec, it usually takes a little time to pop up as listen again, so don't panic! I haven't recorded it yet, it bombed out when live, but will have a go later, so we are covered. Back later....

Have just finished listening.....am blissed out! JN obviously really relished the opportunity to talk about the music he loves. As ever, he was eloquent, his explanations as to why he responds to particular pieces of music were intelligent descriptions of what are usually intuitive responses and (for me anyway) very difficult to articulate beyond saying "I like that"! But I guess, being an actor, he is well placed to understand and analyse emotions. I'd be a hopeless guest: "I love this one, and this one, and this one". It was lovely to hear Jeremy sounding so cheerful and relaxed, not on his guard at all, and having a good time. Some of the music he chose was sublime, though I confess to not liking the Bach (someone thundering up and down a keyboard at random, it always sounds like to me!). It was lovely, an enjoyable hour in very pleasant company!

Linnigee Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 07:17 AM EST

Gaylec, I'll have to check that out. I did hear it live - wonderful!

gaylec Sun, Jul 5, 2009 at 07:13 AM EST

Acck, the BBC3 website is saying that the "Private Passions" broadcast for today "this programme is not available to listen again."

Does it usually take a day or so for them to post it for the seven day replay? Or, do they not allow that feature on some programmes?
Acck. If I completely missed this and it isn't going to replay, I am going to be seriously bummed out.

We can definately make you a CD, that's easy!

Jud is still exploring options for sending it as well. When he locks on to a project, he is compelled to find solutions. Typical Engineer!

If you email me, I'll send you my street address.

annelise79 Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 06:23 PM EST

gaylec--I'll send you a blank disc and my address! LOL! And three cheers for Jud for trying, AND for jumping online to explain to us damsels in distress what he is doing! That's good people right there, girl ;) I hope those burgers were great! At my Fruit's n Nut's store, we had quinoa burgers and tofutti hot dogs :( God Bless America!

gaylec Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 06:09 PM EST

Houston, we have a problem. Our server won't let us send files as large as that MP3 via email. Hubby is working on another avenue for sharing. I'll keep you updated. We'll figure something out.

Hazel Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 06:00 PM EST

Would also like to have it. BTW, would like to know how to convert a cassette tape to cd so I can download it to my hard drive and or share it. I have a cassette of JN in a BBC radio play called The Polish Soldier and would like to convert it. Someone in the UK recorded it for me several years ago.

I'd be happy to anneshirley, just send me your email address.

anneshirley Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 05:45 PM EST

Dear gaylec!

If your hubby manages to save the file would you be so kind to send me as well?

That would mean a lot to me! Thanks!

gaylec Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 04:20 PM EST

Yep, that means 4 AM for me. But, it will be on the site for 7 days, so I'll listen once I get up, and then get hubby to save it.
Linnigee, Jud will send you instructions on how to save the file, but do email me when it arrives, I want to make sure it goes through intact.
We will get this all figured out, Super Geek Man is on the job, LOL!

Linnigee Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 04:12 PM EST

Gaylec, I've sent you an email with my info. HM, thanks!
I've set my alarm for early tomorrow, as we on the East coast will listen to the live broadcast at 7am - does this mean 4am for you, Gaylec? Whew!

HM Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 04:12 PM EST

Night night ladies, it's nearly tomorrow here!!
AND nearly our 4000th post: hint, hint, Mandi!

gaylec Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 04:11 PM EST

Within the hour, the file will go out to Linnigee, as she just mailed. We are going to eat our 4th of July hamburgers first however!

HM, Jud is short for Justin. Though, how his Mother came up with the nickname of Jud, from Justin, is beyond me!

HM Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 04:06 PM EST

Cool, sounds like Jud (great name!) has it covered. I will be doing it for myself anyway, so if there's any probs, you can call on me as a back up.
Let me know how you get on with omih, annelise, I'll be interested to see what you think of it. I've got to the end now and don't quite know what to do with myself (till tomorrow anyway!!).

gaylec Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 03:46 PM EST

PS: This may be the same way we have to do the Music program as well.Via email.

gaylec Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 03:45 PM EST

annelise, Hubby is checking for you now to see what format he put Femmes Fatales in. He has it stored, he just has to find it for you.

Hubby is happing on in my place here, and will tell you all what you need to do for us to get this to you. It may require emailing me so I can send it as an attachment.

Here's Hub, his name is Jud!

"I have it as a 69 MB mp3 file in ITunes Audiobook format."

Back to Gayle ....
Jud is concerned about copyright issues, so, he says if you send me your email addresses (those that want the file), he will send it out as an attachment.
My email is:
coolpatt@cox.net

OMG!!! I would love a copy of "Femme Fatales" That program was fabulous!
Luckily, I am able to listen to it on my Mom's old computer, but my new laptop, no go!

annelise79 Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 03:36 PM EST

Thank you for the Independence Day wishes from our UK Cisters! Very kind!
Alina, I think you would like Bernstein's take on Mahler...it just feels like her "gets" him on a level some other conductors seem to miss.
HM, I have to say hug your tecchie hubby for us Yank girls! Hopefully between gaylec's sweetie and yours, we will all be able to rhapsodize come Monday ;) If I could send you commission on "OMiH", I would!
P.S. I was so saddened to hear of Mollie Sugden's passing! I LOVED watching "AYBS", and seeing Mrs. Slocombe's different hair colors every week, when I was younger :) Here's a sweet compilation tribute to her from YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_mcTcWlX3I . Fitting and adorable ;)

Linnigee Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 03:31 PM EST

I have always been able to listen to the BBC programs for a week. What I want to do is save it on my hard drive so I can listen to it forever!!
:-))))

gaylec Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 03:21 PM EST

When the Femmes Fatales aired on the BBC3, Hubby was able to save it (somehow) and was able to burn a CD of it for me. So, I am sure he will figure out some way to save it to a transferable file so it can be shared. He's pretty clever that way. He just mentioned possibly an itunes file. So, I think it's a good bet he will be able to snag and save it for you gals who won't get to listen to it right off the site.

HM Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 02:38 PM EST

My own hub will do his best (he knows his life will not be worth living if he fails in this most important of tasks!!!). We will do the deed in the next few days and I will post a link, but be sure to do your bit quickly as it won't stay there for ever. Will keep you posted.....hopefully, between us all, you'll be able to listen!

Linnigee Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 02:27 PM EST

HM, I looked into the matter and BBC iPlayer says that non-US people cannot download onto their hard drive - so I don't know if Gaylec's hubby will be able to send a WAV attachment or not. If you can help, I'd love it!
