'Brothers & Sisters': Is Rebecca up to no good?

Categories: 'Brothers & Sisters', Television

Vancamp_l Holy snap! After the single funniest episode of Brothers & Sisters' freshman season — I insist that Susan Sullivan, Jenna Elfman, and Perry King be booked for return engagements playing Bloods and Crips-style games of charades and trivia against the Walkers — it was jarring (but awesome) to wrap with newfound half-sibling Rebecca's shocking revelation that her brother-in-law kissed her during a guitar lesson. (Ewww!) But here's the question that kept plaguing me last night as I was trying to fall asleep: Is Rebecca (Emily VanCamp, pictured) telling the truth about Joe's indiscretion, or is she merely trying to stir up trouble as revenge for the way Sarah vindictively broke the news to her about her paternity? I've got a feeling it'll all come to a head by the season finale, and I for one, can hardly wait — so long as the show's writers don't skimp on Nora (Sally Field) and Kitty (Calista Flockhart) giddily bribing children to help them commit petty larceny. Oh, and best line of the night? "What about your grandmother? She drinks a lot, doesn't she? Have you ever seen her with a whole lot of bandages all over her face?" Put that on Field's Emmy reel and call it a day!

Even if there is some resemblence between Kitty and Ally, I think the characterization works perfectly for Kitty. Calista does an amazing job.
Vote for B&S Watch now!

I also think we need a TV Watch for this. In the last few months, this show has slowly become my fave, the only show I really look forward to and demand radio silence. TV Watch would be great. Also, turned my nose up initially at casting of Sally and Calista but I think they're great.

Love this show. Gets better and better. Great episode. Bring on a rematch of game night! Sally Field rocks! Awesome cast and writing. Hope ABC sticks with this show. EW needs to give B&S a weekly TV Watch a.s.a.p.!!

This is all very tricky. First, we have Sarah's almost-affair. Then Sarah accusing Joe of an almost-affair. Then the outsider bond of Joe & Rebecca followed by the musical bond and the description of the ex-boyfriend that sounds a lot like Joe. We also have Rebecca's wistful comments about her lack of family bond and desire for one, and then Justin telling her that the family only shows you that they love you when you're in a crisis. Hmmm...

TV WATCH, PLEASE!!!!!

Ernesto Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 07:05 PM EST

I love Kitty! I mean Calista Flockhart, I don't see Ally in Kitty at all...and I enjoyed last night episode a lot, specially when Nora and her went to get their trophy back, those two are really something together, I think this show is great!!!

Ya know - I was reeling when they cancelled Everwood after 4 short seasons - thank god Greg Berlanti is back and as good as ever with this gem. Best line last night goes to Kevin "I'm not as gay as you Donna"

Christina Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 05:44 PM EST

Forget Desperate Housewives, people should be watching Brothers and Sisters. Loves last nights episode. I could totally see the Joe and Rebecca thing coming the whole episode though. The fallout from this is not going to be pretty.

Jan Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 05:22 PM EST

Either Rebecca is seeking revenge or Sarah's husband is addicted to younger women. Remember in earlier shows, Sarah walked in on her husband with a YOUNG student and it appeared too friendly.

Favorite moment of last night's episode: Kevin's imitation of the episode. The shriek and the hand motions were the best! Laughed myself to tears.

Jason Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 05:02 PM EST

I'm torn as to whether or not I think she's lying. I would like to think not but you never know with this show. It certainly seemed a little convenient how freely she was hanging out with Sarah after the way Sarah initially treated her.

I agree: this show needs a TV Watch. Slezak, can I write it?

Mebad Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

Some real LOL moments last night on B&S. Loved the "we don't have one of those" line the Jones matriach gave. And Sally Field trying to find out info. from the kid, loved it! But I still can't stand Calista Flockhart..is it just me or is she still playing Ally McBeal? REALLY wish another actress was in that part. Anyone else feeling the same?

McGee Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's spent time thinking about this. I honestly think it could go either way; she could be lying, knowing that there's no way one Walker could keep this from another (although she seemed pretty genuinely upset), but, let's face it, they've already set up Sarah and Joe's marital woes, especially Sarah's old crush on that dude from the office. Plus, Joe and Becca seemed to have some sort of an outsiders' understanding.

On a side note, I don't think any self-respecting theatre student would have missed that question. I'm not saying she threw it intentionally, but seriously, I'm not even in theater and I've known that line since I was a freshman in high school.

And I second the call for a TV Watch.

Ryin Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

Hey Michael,
Since you watch this show and already "Blog" about this show, can you PLEASE start the weekly TV Watch for this show? It would make up hardcore for Desperate's lame rehash watches.
P.S. I'll help you write them!

Tina Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

Personally, I thought the best line of the episode was "Well, I'm just not as gay as you are" from Kevin to the gay daughter in the Jones family.

Dillon Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 03:04 PM EST

yes the best line from the show last night was Kevin's "Die kitty die!" I laughed so hard. This show is great!

linda s Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 03:03 PM EST

I think it's equally as interesting if she's telling the truth. If so, she really is in a horrible position because I think she knows noone is really going to believe her. Plus, she would then face losing her her new family members. I'm not sure that Justin will simply believe her. Regardless of how they choice to go, it should make for some good future story lines.

vjgb Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 02:48 PM EST

Okay, maybe I am a sap, but I really thought that Rebecca thought she knew what she was talking about in trivia. Don't really feel like she has any evil in her heart towards this family. And come on, we all knew from the start that Joe was less than perfect! I say, cut her some slack.

blech Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 02:40 PM EST

Awesome episode. How is it I love the Walkers more every week? Perhaps because I watched this after coming from my own family game night?
And how much did you love Nora having to explain Rebecca to the Jones', and the matriarch's response: "Oh. We don't have one of those."
I don't think Rebecca's that devious, but it's interesting to see where they'll take this: she's either scamming them, setting out to ruin them, pitting Justin against the others, or really innocent (which would make Joe creepy--she's only 20!--which I'm not getting).

And I thought the funniest line was during charades: "Die, Kitty die!" was Kevin's guess. I agree with Thataboy, Kevin deserved to finally get put in his place for his reactionary liberalism.

Bruno Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 02:38 PM EST

OK, why am I the only person in the world who wasn't watching this show?

I just started watching 3 episodes ago, and I caught a clip show that played Saturday Afternoon and I'm caught up.

This show is really good.

Why doesn't it get the post Grey's timeslot? Men in Trees seems like a better fit for DH than Brother's and Sisters. I remember hearing about drama and gossip about this show and how it was a disappointment, but I beg to differ.

What a well acted and well written show. It took me a while to discover it, but I am happy I did.

ENM Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 02:28 PM EST

You read my mind, Slezak! I have a feeling Rebecca's up to no good-also, there is NO WAY she thought Juliet's last name was Montague. I love Joe! No matter what state his marriage with Sarah is in, I doubt he would jeopardize it by putting the moves on her little half-sister. But then again, the two definitely shared a "moment".

Sarah Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

I think they really kissed, but it was shady of Rebecca to tell Justin that Joe kissed her. To me, she seemed to imply it wasn't mutual, but she was totally giving Joe bambi eyes, talking about her much older ex boyfriend and letting him get close to her and look into her eyes. She wasn't exactly running for the door. They also set up the possibility that Joe would cheat earlier this season, first with the bad therapy sessions and with his having a crush on another mom. I'd prefer it if they hadn't kissed, but I'm betting they did. I like how she could potentially ruin Sarah's family just as her mother "ruined" Nora's. History sure does repeat itself.

mike Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 02:10 PM EST

It never even occurred to me she was lying. Amy Abbott wouldn't do that. But, this isn't Everwood anymore, though it feels like it sometime.

I was thinking the exact same thing as all of you. First, i thought she deliberately gave the wrong answer and then i thought that she was trying to stir up trouble betweeen Sarah and Joe. And this was by far the funniest episode yet!

Thataboy Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

Kevin is a total a-hole, and gives liberal gay lawyers a bad name! I was happy to see his date put him in his place.

I think Rebecca is "creating drama" so that the family rallies around her. Or maybe Joe is just a straight up perv. Who knows.

Love this show.

aymzer Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

Slezak, I was thinking the exact same thing! Especially since all they showed was she and Joe looking into each others eyes before they cut the shot. She didn't seem like a total innocent if the look in her eyes meant anything. And then she immediately calls Justin, then tells him to forget it, even though she is obviously upset. I think she was totally setting the Walkers up!

Slezak's Stalker Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 01:31 PM EST

This has become one of my favorite shows. Sally Field plays her role to perfection. I'm guessing Rebecca threw the game too just to get back at Kitty. The gal that plays Rebecca is a talented young actress in order to hold her own with this cast. All were in top form last night.

Green Gummi Bear Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

I sure hope so. Though it will put her in an "evil" position that I don't think her character deserves (they have shown she’s not the...most straight and narrow of children), I'd hate for them to destroy the husband character. No reason to make him a jerk (even if she is legal, a predatory letch at that) plus the whole girls marry their father issue just would be too much. And first the father, then this guy...will it get to a point where all straight men in the show are cheating a-holes?

bma Mon, Apr 16, 2007 at 01:18 PM EST

Yup, it was a fun episode. And we didn't actually see Rebecca and Joe kiss, did we?

Also, I thought it was fun to see Susan Sullivan and Jenna Elfman again, this time as mother and daughter instead of in-law. And hey, wasn't Sullivan's character on "Dharma and Greg" named Kitty?
