So long, Bob Vila

Vila_l A fond PopWatch shout-out to Bob Vila, who, it seems, may be riding off into this old house in the sky (or at least into rerun heaven). The 60-year-old home improvement guru's eponymous CBS show was just canceled due, apparently, to a piddling 0.8 rating, leaving Vila without a broadcast home for the first time in 28 years. Boo!

I mean, what a guy. I remember when we were growing up how my brother was just addicted to Vila's programs, starting with This Old House, which ran from 1979 to 1988. I swear, bro couldn't get enough of watching the master work his magic with crown molding and toilets. I guess I never really appreciated Vila until more recently -- now that I live on my own and have a power drill, I realize I owe so much of what I know to him. And, of course, he gets credit for popularizing the whole TV fix-it genre which now sports countless shows, including the greatest program in the 500-channel universe, TLC's Flip That House (which totally rocks A&E's Flip This House's world). Ah, I'll miss him. You, too, huh?

Heooo, I think my Daughter left you a comment and kinda exagerated .We live in my parents home which passed away sometime ago. I have a brother yhat is 40 but like a chile mind wise.He is just very special and has had a hard time sinctheir passing because he lived with them....I think they mined underground the house years ago because I have had to have headers put under spots of the floor 3 times the walls are cracking in spots and the floor is giving again. Its not all that bad but I just found out im Diabetic and recentlt divorced with 2 kids and my brother to take care of. They would love a new house but you know you gotta pick who needs it more.

Thanks for your time
Teresa

Why not let the man retire already if he wants to? He's had a great run of shows that has taught us all quite a bit. Let the man relax if he wants!

Like most others, I'd tape BV in the wee hours of the AM. Until I found this site I had wondered where his show disappeared to. Too bad, the guy's got talent and personality and a following. Whoever does the ratings never contacted me about the show, that's for sure.

HOW UNFAIR TO CANCEL BECAUSE OF LOW RATINGS. THE ONLY TIME I'VE BEEN ABLE TO CATCH THE SHOW, IN THE S.F. BAY AREA, FOR OVER A YEAR, HAS BEEN SATURDAY MORNINGS AT 5:30. I'VE HAD MY VCR SET. THE LOCAL TV LISTINGS HAVEN'T EVEN INCLUDED THE SHOW. DOES ANYONE HAVE HIGH RATINGS AT THAT TIME? I'LL BET NOT. I'LL MISS HIS SHOW!!!

Bob Vila Nevr incited anyone to lawsuit, only showed positive, constructive(forgive the pun) things on his shows.
MAKE UP YOUR MINDS PEOPLE! You want good grammar & good taste or not?

I hope he comes back to regular tv. From my understanding, he broke with PBS because of his deals with Sears. That leads me to believe he can't return to public television. But why not put Mr. Vila on one of those home improvement shows? His old school handyman stylings would be a cool contrast to the frequently metro and stylish hosts of these shows.

Agreed that the wording was a little iffy. Vila's one of the few Latinos on TV who's pretty much always shown in a positive light. It'd be a big loss if he passed away.

Bob Ross is painting happy little trees in heaven, and I hope to take his course in the afterlife. Or at least buy his upcomming video game.

You can catch him on HSN selling some pretty neat tools!

I always get Flip that House and Flip this House confused. Someone change their name already! Anyhoo, they're definitely a staple in my weekend TV viewing. Oh and why doesn't HGTV or TLC pick up Vila. He'd be great there!

Will not happen since there still seems to be a lot of bad blood between Vila and Russell Morash, the This Old House grand poobah, but the place where Vila belongs is as host of TOH. It never helped ratings that Home Again was on at like 6:30AM on Saturday in New York but it does look old fashioned in comparison with all the new competition out there.

Flip This House (on A&E) is FAR FAR better than Flip That House (on TLC)is every single way... The families on this new season of Flip This House are great... Check it out!

gargamel Wed, Apr 25, 2007 at 08:32 AM EST

FLIP THIS HOUSE is the best show. They need more episodes though.

Mel Wed, Apr 25, 2007 at 12:03 AM EST

I love A&E's Flip the/this/that House...and its TLC progeny, The Real Deal. I think I just really like that team of Charlotte, NC charlatans (led by Richard Davis).

Stacey, it's funny you mentioned Bob Ross. Both of the Bobs share a special place in my childhood. During my sweltering summer vacations in Houston, I would ease into my afternoon nap by watching the Bobs--not because they were boring, I actually enjoyed both of the shows. It was more that I found them strangely soothing. Bob Ross with his fro, that 'happy little cloud' whisper, and the sound of the brush strokes on the canvas. Bob Vila with his fatherly tone and the hypnotizing sound of drills and nails. Thank you, Corporation for Public Broadcasting!

But seriously, I hope Bob Vila finds a new home. (I'm looking at you, TLC and HGTV!)

I'm kind of surprised Vila was still on TV! I much prefer A&E's "Flip This House" to TLC's "Flip That House" because on "this," the ppl actually know what they are doing, as opposed to on "that," the flipper has never done a flip before and always ends up saying "well, this project is a bit bigger than I thought it was going to be...and i'm over budget and time...and the contractors have run off..." on "This," i'm darn impressed when they get a flip done in 2 weeks, and sell the the house off for 50K profit!

If you want to learn anything about home improvement on TV now, there's a channel called "DIY." do anything yourself!

Stacey Tue, Apr 24, 2007 at 08:25 PM EST

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one who freaked out at the headline. I was having flashbacks to when I heard that Bob Ross died.

Ceballos Tue, Apr 24, 2007 at 06:45 PM EST

Phew Josh! When I saw this headline and the picture, I was afraid Bob had died! Don't scare me like that again!

Also, I thoroughly enjoyed his appearances on "Home Improvement" as Tim Allen/Taylor's nemesis.

Yo Yo Tue, Apr 24, 2007 at 06:43 PM EST

Ok, you guys seriously need to re-caption this because the way it reads, it looks like Bob Vila is dead. Wait, he's not dead, is he?

Simon Tue, Apr 24, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

Never a fan but I did enjoy it when I caught it on tv. Hope that someone will realize what a legend this man is and pick this up. I mean what is Flip this house or Flip that house? It does not teach you anything. Long live Bob V!
