Anyone else catch that flub on last night's 'Brothers & Sisters'?

Getty_l Is Balthazar Getty's character on Brothers & Sisters so boring even the show's cast and crew can't remember his name? During last night's episode, the Walker kids' illegitimate half-sister Rebecca (Emily VanCamp) was arguing with her mother (Patricia Wettig) about accepting a dinner invite from Walker matriarch Nora (Sally Field), and snapped, "You work with Tony Walker. Is that uncomfortable?" I rewound the scene twice, just to be sure, since Wettig's character has invested in a vineyard with Getty's Tommy Walker. Which got me wondering: Was this an accidental flub by VanCamp that nobody on set bothered to notice? Was it a commentary that Rebecca doesn't yet know all of her estranged siblings' names? Did my DVR malfunction and turn VanCamp's ''mmm'' to ''nnn''? Or did we perhaps witness a cheeky acknowledgement by the show's writing team that Tommy needs some character traits -- other than sterility and petulance, that is -- pronto?

Slezak, I love you, but you're wrong on this one.

If you re-watch the video on ABC.com, you'll see Van Camp's mouth clearly produce the 'mmm' sound required for Tommy. You will not see the mouth form an 'o' needed for Tony. The 'n' sound requires different muscles and is produced with the tongue towards the front of the mouth, while the 'm' does not require the tongue's involvement and instead requires the lips to press together.

But--maybe it's all a conspiracy by ABC--they aired "Tony" as an April Fool's joke and switched it before they posted it online :-P

I just re-watched it, too. It's definitely "Tommy."

jenna von oy Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 08:05 AM EST

She totally said Tony. I replayed it twice on Tivo.

Rebecca Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 06:51 AM EST

... said "Tommy" Walker. No such "flub" happened. Michael, please clean your ears before tonight's Idol.

Fab Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 04:28 AM EST

Please, enough with the Balthazar Getty backlash. I agree with you on the fact that Tommy Walker is not the most interesting character on this show, but please let the writers and producers give him a chance - the season is not over yet ! I'm pretty sure everyone involved can come up with an interesting story line for Tommy. Plus, Balthazar Getty can be a terrific actor. What you call blandness is actually really interesting when it's used on the right purposes - remember Davd Lynch's "Lost Highway".

Peter Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 01:59 AM EST

I just rewatched it. She definitely said "Tommy".

Melissa Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 10:33 PM EST

Heard Tony, convinced myself otherwise, too late, gone from DVR. What's been bothering me more, however, is DNA and eye color "casting." Holly has pale blue eyes and Becca has black/brown eyes, ergo she supposedly got her eyes from her father, but his were greyish blue which he shares with Kevin and Tommy and Nora's are black/brown like Kitty's. Sarah's and Justin's. I hate it when they cast like that. It's backwards.

Noodles Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 08:26 PM EST

I've got to agree. I've seen Balthazar Getty in a few series now (including Pasadena) and he's a blank slate. Definitely the least interesting of the Walker clan (although I don't care much for Rachel Griffiths' shaggy-haired TV husband - definitely not worthy of "Muriel"'s 'Rhonda'). The show has promise but could be improved for Season 2.

Mk Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 06:59 PM EST

Can see why you thought it was Tony, but after a couple of playbacks, I have to agree with the others it is Tommy. But when I watched the scene early this morning, I thought who? Oh, I guess she said Tommy. (It's noisy on the treadmill.)

Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 05:40 PM EST

I just rewatched it, and I heard Tommy.

Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 05:39 PM EST

I just rewatched it, and I heard Tommy.

Fatima Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:53 PM EST

Sterility, Petulance, AND eyebrow balding!

jo Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

I just watched it after reading this post. I can see how you might hear "Tony" but I definitely heard "Tommy" and rewound the DVR several times to confirm. VanCamp has a weird accent sometimes. Love the show!

Daveylow Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:06 PM EST

Sorry. My last sentence got garbled. I meant to say that my favorite brother Justin seems to be in danger all the time and I don't want him to be off the show.

Daveylow Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 03:46 PM EST

I thought last night's show was very good and a great showcase for Sally Fields. I didn't buy, though, that Rebecca would find the Walkers so dysfunctional. She's been living with a lying mother for her whole life! There do seem to be too many siblings on this show. But I think this is one of the best dramas on TV right now. I just wish my favorite brother--Justin--seems in the most danger of getting killed or hurt.

D.O.M. Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 03:40 PM EST

Well I hope Rebecca ends up in lingerie or a shower scene...she's totally H O T !

AJ Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 03:39 PM EST

I heard "Tommy" - will have to check again on my DVR now...

JL Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 03:29 PM EST

Yeah, what is with all the hate on here for this show? I think it keeps getting better and better. I absolutely love the dynamic between all the family memebers and especially love when they begin to pick on one another. Last night was one of the best dinner scenes - Kevin and Justin fighting over Rebecca's glass was hysterical!

Ryan Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 01:39 PM EST

Yes, I noticed it too. But wow, there's a lot of hate for this show on here today. I think it has really picked up from a very unpleasant beginning. As for Getty, he just seems to always be playing really boring characters (Thomas Grace on Alias, anyone?) By the way has anyone else noticed that, talent-wise, this show is practically Alias II? Olin, Rifkin, Wettig, Getty, am I forgetting anyone else?

Maire Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 01:38 PM EST

I heard Tony as well. I couldn't figure it out, and then second-guessed myself, wondering if I'd heard "Tom" instead of Tommy. I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Lene Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 01:23 PM EST

I didn't even notice, but then I seem to tune out whenever Tony/Tommy and his wife (what's her name? I honestly can't remember) are on screen or referenced by the other members of the cast. In a family of so many large personalities, why even include him? Maybe for sweeps they'll try to up his presence by having him mysteriously disappear, except no one will notice until next season...

Andie Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 01:04 PM EST

I heard Tony as well, but talked myself into the idea that she said Tommy. If it was meant on purpose I'd think they'd have a line where the mother corrected her. Oh well, his character is blah anyways and I love Emily VanCamp, so if she says "Tony", I'll go with it.

Ron Mexico Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 12:52 PM EST

Yeah, and I keep thinking, "Who cares?"

Shana Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 12:48 PM EST

I heard Tony as well. I kept thinking, which one is tony? I couldn't remember what the character's name was anyway.

Marcus Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 12:35 PM EST

She definitely said, "Tommy".

marykate Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

Maybe they could spice up his character by having him collect marbles in a old glass jar, have a boy-crush on Billy the Kid and then get shot by one of Pat Garrett's gang.

Brothers and Sisters... boring. Young Guns II... AWESOME!!

Jason Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 12:16 PM EST

Balthazar Getty's friggin hot. But this show sucks. I think I'll go watch him in Lost Highway again...

Hanna Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:58 AM EST

That's so funny. I heard it, too, but I figured I had just misheard it. I think I took a nap every time he was onscreen last night. Sooo boring.

t-fal Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

I noticed it too!! but I didn't make the connection, I missed quite a few episodes and just thought "Who's Tony?"

Madeleine Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:46 AM EST

I heard it too and was like huh?! Who the heck is Tony?!! And could the actress who plays "Tony"'s wife be any more of a yawner too?!!!

This show is not nearly as good as we all want it to be. I'm done with it.

maya Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:27 AM EST

I think the bigger question is: Why are you all still watching B&S (or, more appropriately, BS)??

Sven Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:24 AM EST

It did air on April Fool's Day (or so the producers will claim)...

Christine Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

I heard it too! At first I thought Emily Van Camp just had a weird accent that would make it sound like "Tony" instead of "Tommy," but she DEFINITELY said Tony. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.

Eric Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

I heard Tommy. Of course my brain could have doing that thing where you know what they mean to ssay so that's what it hears. I may go to abc.com tonight and re watch just to see.
