Alanis does "My Humps"

Apr 2, 2007, 04:50 PM | by Adam B. Vary

Categories: Apropos of Nothing, Music

The Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps" was already in on its own joke, but somehow Alanis still manages to goof on it while also making wicked fun of her own angsty-whiny self. Brava!

Any other unexpected cover-song-cover-artist combos -- like, say, Jay-Z tackling "Mmmbop" -- you'd like to see?

no, weird al did the oposite of this. he kept the music the way it was and changed the lyrics. she's simply doing a cover in her own style as a spoof. and a funny one at that.

viola Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 02:17 AM EST

Alanis is a genius!!This is hilarious!!!

MEme Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 01:15 PM EST

Hey.... didn't Weird Al make this kind of thing famous first??
Rip off artists......

WARD Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 06:52 AM EST

this was good, but Travis' Baby Hit Me One More Time is incredible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NwqN-xj9Xs

also The Gourd's version of 'Gin and Juice' is insanely great.

andy Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 07:01 PM EST

I am gonna get drunk, drunk, drunk off of Alanis' Lady Lumps!!!!!!!!
wooof! love it!

lg Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 05:23 PM EST

Dynamite Hack's cover of EZ E's Boys in the Hood is the pinnacle of folk rap.

aramis Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

OMFG...between this and the Scissor Sisters Matrix Pong tribute for "She's My Man"...I'm going to explode with the sheer fabulosity of these hilarious videos! Alanis's stock just went through the roof with me...comedic genius.

Gordon Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 03:53 PM EST

I for one LOOOOOOOVE crazy covers!

All the suggestions here were interesting finds, and they really personalize my music collection too...I think there should be more of these as a feature!

CM Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 03:16 PM EST

I vote for New Found Glory's cover of "Glory of Love" from the Karate Kid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzp2hFi20cM

lynny Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

I knew I liked her! Very funny.

Dee Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this yet, but Obadiah Sparks cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya" is fantasticle!

Hamburger Royal Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 01:33 PM EST

Interesting. On a similar level of weirdness are the Max Raabe & Palastorchester cover versions of Tom Jones' 'Sex Bomb' and Britney's 'Oops, I did it again'.

c.e. Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 01:30 PM EST

I laughed, but then realized that her version was strangely beautiful and now I miss alanis as an artist in her own right and wish she'd put out a great album. But, man that was funny!

T Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

Tori Amos should do "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani. "It's bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s!"

Sarah MacLachlan doing "The Thong Song"! LOL!

Tim the terrible Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 10:55 AM EST

Yup.

Anna Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 10:41 AM EST

Anything by Richard Cheese is hilarious. He does covers of lots of pop songs and gives them a jazzy twist

Anon, E-Mouse Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 10:32 AM EST

Speaking of "Toxic" covers, Nickel Creek does one as well that's pretty frickin' great. It should still be on their Myspace page.

Mozz Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 10:00 AM EST

definetely something to display on my space page... woooo hoooo! she rocks it... i love the "you don't want no drama."

Sean Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 09:43 AM EST

Oh, and how could I forget Ben Folds' version of "B*tches Ain't Sh*t"?

Sean Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 09:38 AM EST

The Chapin Sisters covered "Toxic" shortly after Brit had a hit with it. Quite good -- although with a song that good, it's hard to go wrong.

Allison Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 09:32 AM EST

Ew, she is so gross...

Stephanie Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 09:15 AM EST

I once saw The Flaming Lips do a cover of Kylie Minouge's "I can't get you out of my head" and slowed the la,la,las down. It was interesting.

Jen H Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 09:06 AM EST

That was effing hilarious ... I LOVED the head-butt and ensuing physical punishments for groping her. Absolutely awesome ... if Fergie could actually learn something from this!

Alanis rocks!

AD Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 09:02 AM EST

That's so awesomely funny. And kind of catchy actually. I've now watched it too many times...

Heather Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 09:00 AM EST

That is just about the funniest thing I've ever seen. Bravo, Alanis!!! I don't feel sick to my stomach hearing this version of that song.

Winona Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 07:45 AM EST

That is wonderful... as far as odd covers go, nothing's more odd than Hanson covering Christina Aguilera's "Dirrty" (and yes, there is a recording out there - go forth and find it!). Sadly, no leather chaps were involved.

furry_tom Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 07:11 AM EST

Another great cover, Nina Gordon (of Veruca Salt) covering NWA's Straight Outta Compton. NSFW language, of course.

MOI Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 07:06 AM EST

This stupid, degrading to women 'song' deserves to be made fun of.

RoeLuv Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 06:25 AM EST

BTW,she looks sexy as a Flygirl

Steve Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 11:59 PM EST

HILARIOUS! Was this released on itunes or in relation to a new project?! I love ALanis!

Chels Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 10:59 PM EST

OMG!! Priceless...

justjudith Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 10:39 PM EST

that only punctuates how silly the lyrics are. HILARIOUS.

Mike Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 10:31 PM EST

I think 2007 is going to be a big year for Alanis Morissette.

This had 2,000x more bravado and humor than Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend". Go Alanis!

Max Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 10:01 PM EST

Hearing Alanis sing "what you gonna do with all that ass, all that ass inside those jeans" is the best thing i've ever heard anyone sing in the history of music. It is freaking hilarious.

Nathan Lewis Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 09:51 PM EST

Frickin' hilarious! I was laughing so hard when I saw this!

Jasper Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 09:14 PM EST

Can Ozzy do 'Fergalicious' or is he already a parody of himself???
Maybe Willie Nelson doing 'Walk it Out' by Unk?

djm Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 09:04 PM EST

Where is this from??? I think this is the BEST video of the year!

Jay Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 08:53 PM EST

That is so good! hilarious

Mozz Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 08:39 PM EST

Fracking GENIUS! I love Alanis even more than before!!!! I strangely want to limewire this cover of the song and put it in my ipod.

RayT Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 07:58 PM EST

Her ultra-slow delivery of the lines to "My Humps" lets you truly revel in how ridiculous the lyrics are! How funny would it be to see an extremely morose artist with no sense of humor do something like this? Fiona Apple maybe?

Martha Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 07:14 PM EST

Hilarious. I laughed so hard I snorted. It would be fun to reverse the trend noted in other posts, and have R&B/rap/pop stars cover serious angsty music. A Snoop cover of Coldplay's "Fix You," lightly edited to become "Fix You (Up, Ho Dog)" would be pretty awesome.

Jo Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 06:33 PM EST

I've got to recommend the version of "Baby Got Back" done by Jonathan Coulton -- www.jonathancoulton.com/2005/10/14/thing-a-week-5-baby-got-back/ if you want to listen in. It reminds me of James Taylor or maybe Peter, Paul, and Mary....

nathan Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 06:25 PM EST

We've all seen Alanis' "humps" a few years back in the 'Thank You' video. I'm still trying to erase the memory.
and I hope to see Fergie die horribly in Grindhouse.

JL Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 05:57 PM EST

This was hysterical! I have always loved Alanis, but now my love for her has grown... BRILLIANT!

AD Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 05:15 PM EST

I also recommend Ted Leo's cover of Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone."

AD Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 05:12 PM EST

BellX-1, an Irish band (formerly the band Juniper lead by Damien Rice) does a cover of "Like I Love You" by Justin Timberlake. The arrangement is fantastic (strummed on what sound like a banjo) and almost unrecognizable at first. Similar in tone to this Alanis version of "My Humps."

Chaddogg Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 05:02 PM EST

Try Travis' very earnest live version of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time"....pricelessly funny, because they really sing it quite seriously.

mike Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:38 PM EST

The video is great. But the record industry in general, and
Alannis, in particular, need new material.

Fatima Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:37 PM EST

So funny! Haha this was great. I loved all the voice cracks she would do in perfect Alanis fashion. When celebs make fun of themselves, I can't help but like them. It's why I don't despise John Mayer.

Jason Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:25 PM EST

The Gourds cover of Snoop's Gin n Juice is really good.

Brian Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

Ever hear Ben Folds' cover of Dr. Dre's "B*@ches Aint Sh#t"? Really similar to this, and really quite good.

Vicky Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:20 PM EST

I love the part where she's crying about drama...haha it's perfect!

Deborah Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:15 PM EST

This is the *one* time I actually like Alanis. Good for her, the video is hilarious!

mark in nyc Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

Hilarious....the folks who made the magic show on an earlier popwatch today could take a lesson from her in funny.

Michelle Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

And this is why I love this girl! The best part is the little cracking up at the end.

Ellipsian Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

Thank you Adam (and Alanis/the BEPs)--you made my Monday! I never knew how complete I could feel after a piano-driven, ballady "My Humps". Good times!

If I could add to Mr. Vary's query, what are your favorite "unexpected cover-song-cover-artist combos", fellow PopWatchers? I'm always on the lookout (I'm a big fan of KT Tunstall's "Get Ur Freak On").

Jai Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 03:59 PM EST

I second the Brilliant statement!

Stephanie Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST

I am glad to hear that Alanis has a sense of humor, but if you have seen her video for "Thank You", she has a lot more humps than ferg-heave.

MrsBug Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 03:57 PM EST

OMG...that is BRILLIANT!
