What is 'Idol''s big announcement?

Mar 8, 2007, 10:50 AM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: 'American Idol'

Barba_l_1 Oh my God, it's finally here! Tonight's elimination show will supposedly include "the biggest thing to happen to Idol in five years," according to exec producer Nigel Lythgoe. So what will it be? They've been hyping it for weeks, so it couldn't have anything to do with Rosie O'Donnell's whole racism/weightism accusation (regarding the seeming double standard in the show's responses to the photo scandals of Antonella Barba, pictured, and Frenchie Davis) on The View earlier this week, or Lythgoe's response to Rosie's "oblivious self-promotion." I'm guessing the big announcement will be either a format change or extra-extra-special guest to come on later in the season. So... which special guest? Could there be a male and female winner? Will "America" get to vote back their favorite castoffs? Or will it be something where the singers all have to turn on each other, Survivor-style? That could be strangely fulfilling. What do you think?

Good for American Idol giving back to the Gulf Coast region. I cannot believe the lack of progress that has been made there. If it were New York, everyone would have jumped through their asses to get it up and running. But, since it's the South and predominately black (I am white, before you all go screaming about race), the rest of the country pretty much ignores it.

If Seacrest goes back down there to visit, let him ride on Simon's shoulders. If it rains for more than five minutes, he might drown.

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Sat, Mar 10, 2007 at 11:17 AM EST

People here in New Orleans and the entire Gulf Coast need all the help and assistance we can get. America has forgotten how devastated this region was after the storm. We are nowhere NEAR being back to normal, and I applaud American Idol and Ryan, Simon, Paula and Randy for their intention to come down here and help us out. THANK YOU ALL!

Ellipsian Fri, Mar 9, 2007 at 12:13 PM EST

I stand corrected...and a bit humbled: I think the charity thing is increds. You go, Idol--using your powers for good! Love that.

Phantom Fri, Mar 9, 2007 at 10:34 AM EST

Is anyone else as annoyed by Paula as me? She stands the whole time with her hands over her face in this fake shock when someone is voted off. God, what a phoney! If they wanted a washed up pop singer from the 80's, they could have gotten Taylor Dane. I bet she'd be a little less obnoxious...

matt Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:36 PM EST

How did Sabrina get voted off? She was the best of this season!!!!

Rachel Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 09:42 PM EST

Oh.. so that is where the .99 cents text messaging goes... interesting. LOL

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 09:06 PM EST

Awwwww...American Idol has a heart:)

kugal Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 06:55 PM EST

I agree with many of you in changing it to the voting off and making it available online would be good. I hate the pre-shows of the awful contestants...demeaning and a waste of air time! I also enjoyed Rock Star more!

Oliver Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 06:39 PM EST

The surprise is a big 2-night Africa charity extravaganza in late April with many guest stars.

amber Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 06:25 PM EST

songwriting competition, duh!

Lori Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 05:55 PM EST

Re the whole Frenchie vs Antonella issue...the Frenchie controversy was four years ago. If it happened now, likely she wouldn't be kicked off. Times change and penaltys or lack of them also change.

Ep Sato Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:56 PM EST

I like the idea of changing the voting system so we pick who we want off the show. Totally awesome idea!

Rahul Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:45 PM EST

The surprise will probably be an appearance by Paul McCartney.

lisalisa Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

Fine if Simon wants to try to rock a blue shirt, as long as his hairy manboobs are still on display.

Ellipsian Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:27 PM EST

It's the songwriting competition. Are we done now?

Stephanie Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:18 PM EST

LaKesiha will auction off her tangerine shirt and denim skirt outfit that made her look like "The Thing" on EBay!

djm Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:16 PM EST

I think it's the songwriting thing - and if it is Michael Jackson appearing as a "guest judge" my response is - WHO CARES? Michael Jackson hasn't been taken seriously as an artist in forever - to me he is the same as having Paul Anka on. Someone alert me when they have someone truly special on.

Tim Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

One of three announcements:

* Secrest is leaving.

* All but four of the guys are going home.

* This entire season is a bad dream and new singers are coming on board, starting next week.

Phantom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

That Simon-blue-shirt post by Cracker was freaking funny, dude...

Phantom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:04 PM EST

Is the big announcement that they are finally packing everything up and quitting? Because I don't care what they have to say otherwise. The show is awful - glorified Karaoke. Both seasons of "Rock Star" were better...and they were dreadful, too.

Gary Coleman could dunk over Ryan Seabiscuit!

spud Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:03 PM EST

It's gonna be the already known songwriting competition.

RBlues Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:45 PM EST

I agree that it's the Michael Jackson announcement.

I have also read that there is going to be an "All-Stars" version in which past favorites will sing the top 10 song submissions from the public. I think that is kinda lame as everyone is going to vote for their favorite idol, rather than song.

Jenny Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:44 PM EST

Oh, PopWatch optimists . . . could anything so interesting as you have suggested really come from the cheesy Idol machine? I'm expecting a huge letdown. Computer voting, maybe. My money is on something anti-climactic like the songwriting competition.

Gregg Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:24 PM EST

Maybe thety'll take the top 12 vote- getters irrespective of gender and get rid of more of the duds (dudes) that way.

Stephanie Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

They stopped the wild card during JHuds Idol season. I thought that was a big mistake. I agree that the rules should be changed so that people can vote to kick people off. The results would be better and it would be fun.

Lucky7 Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:15 PM EST

About the Wild Cards possibility - we can dream, right? - do you think the WC's would be at a disadvantage because they haven't gotten as much exposure as the semifinalists, or do you think they'd benefit from having the new-kid-in-school mystique?

DR Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

I too would love for them to announce that there are going to dump the 6/6 rule and just take the best of the remaining 20, but I too also believe it'll be the stupid songwriting competition.

Corkey Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:09 PM EST

I would love it if they changed the voting system so that you vote to kick people off, rather than to keep them. I think we would get better results that way...

Patrick Gray Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:08 PM EST

Michael Jackson is going to be a guest judge on "American Idol" is the big announcement.

ericalina Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:27 PM EST

it's probably the songwriting competition, but i'd LOVE it to be some kind of wildcard -- or else maybe they will boot off 3 guys and just one girl! or 4 guys!

Stephanie Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:21 PM EST

JC: I knew what it was. It was just that her take on it sounded a bit too Miss America crossed with early Amy Grant. The last time I heard that, I was in Loretto PA., home of too much overplayed Christian Rock.

Where Y'at, Dawlin'? Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:18 PM EST

I hope they announce that there was a terrible mix-up in Season 5 and Chris Daughtry was REALLY the winner! LOL

Never mind, he really has turned out to be the winner anyway :)

Ceballos Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:12 PM EST

I hope they announce the introduction of the REAL male contestants because this possibly CANNOT be it.

GOB Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:11 PM EST

They're going to make all the losers learn how to play an instrument, and make an American Idol band. Blake can do the percussion with his mouth... Chris gets a cowbell... Brandon will do keyboards and back-up vocals... Gina gets a guitar... Antonella gets a tambourine and go-go boots. The winner (Melinda) will sing lead and they'll go on tour together as the new Partridge Family.

pede Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:04 PM EST

Sheesh y'all, get with it. They're going to finally announce what's been in Paula's drinks. Either that or they're going to electroshock Randy every time he says "dawg" or "pitchy". Or that Ryan & Simon are secretly in love and getting married on the season finale, and the winner will get to sing their first dance song.

Rachel Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:47 PM EST

Maybe that next year they will up the audition age to 75 since the talent pool seems to be limited in season 6. Only people worthy this year are the ladies... the guys are just filling air time.. and quite worthless at it too. I miss season 5. I would love to see Elliott sing again, even though I didn't care for him during the season. He would be GREAT for this season. Poor guy.

Laura Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:46 PM EST

I hope it's not a "twist" a la Big Brother, which never amount to anything interesting. Maybe one of the contestants get a golden power of veto or immunity each week. hahahaha

laura Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:42 PM EST

I heard a rumor they were going to add computer voting into the mix and that was the announcement.

IHaveVertigo Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:21 PM EST

My guess is that they are doing some sort of All-Stars season, which I would hate to see-- hated Survivor, Big Brother, and now The Amazing Race all-stars. Or maybe that they are having that American Idol camp, but haven't we known about that for a couple weeks now?
Or like Cracker joked about, maybe two winners? Or Wild Cards, though they have done that in the past and it might be too late now for wild card entries?

Ms Daisy Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:19 PM EST

Maybe they are going to announce that "Carrie-Okie" Underwood is going to give the contestants instructions on how they too can have the onstage charisma of a tree stump.

JC Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:12 PM EST

for the record the song haley sang last night was NOT christian rock.. it is a country song by Faith Hill

Stephanie Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:00 PM EST

ihate, I don't think that people want to see Jay Leno naked. please. Haley "I sing only christian rock" Scarnato is a lot prettier. Ant looks like a mall rat.

jj Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:57 PM EST

im with christina, i said that yesterday... if its the stupid songwriting think ill be pissed, already a boring enough season. nigel said its the "biggest announcement in 5 yrs" and ive heard theres some kind of a "twist"

jenjen Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:56 PM EST

Hopefully, it's "Goodbye Antonella". Or maybe "Antonella vs. Frenchie : American Idol Smackdown".

bb Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:54 PM EST

Yep, Songwriting contest announcement.

Tamara Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:49 PM EST

I've just assumed its an announcement about that Boys from Brazil type "Idol Camp"....

Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:43 PM EST

I really hope it has something to do with anybody else but who they have now. If not, I may not watch the rest of the season and wait for next year.

Christina Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:40 PM EST

Hopefully its the joke that these aren't the real contestants and there's actually better ones waiting in the wings

worksoutintheend Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:38 PM EST

Regarding a possible format change, like 8 women 4 men. They won't do that, as once you get to the final 12, the men will just get eliminated week after week, till we're down to the true three or four anyway (3 women 1 dude). I think the announcement will be the somgwriting competition.

annie Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:31 PM EST

they're just going to officially announce the song-writing portion of the competition. big whoop.

BabyDahl Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:29 PM EST

What is american idol?

Andrew Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:25 PM EST

I believe they announced it a while back but the "American Idol Song" will be the subject of a songwriting competiton.

BabyDahl Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:20 PM EST

What is Americanidol?

Joe C Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:19 PM EST

I know what I'd LIKE it to be: Ryan is leaving the show. I know that's not what it is, but a man can dream....

Dee Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

It's not going to be anything special I'm sure if that barba girl is still on there.

jason Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

they've already made a lot of mention of the songwriting contest, so do you think that would be it? i was hoping for a BIG surprise, but you guys may be right. and i do hope past idols perform them, if for no other to reason but to see trenyce again!!

Paul Ketz Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:11 PM EST

To make it really interesting, I hope that it is the songwriting competition, the elimination of Antonella Barba IF she makes the Top 12, AND a Top 12 based on total votes (more like 8 women and 4 men).

I think the show realizes it will be a snooze if they have to include 6 men, 6 women. I wonder if the guys would have some sort of legal recourse to get the Final 16 and then it is announced more than 2 of them are going home!

Ep Sato Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:04 PM EST

A "wildcard" might be kind of cool. Maybe a dozen of the most recently voted off (or maybe a dozen of those we never got to vote on) would get a small reprise and maybe one of them gets to compete with the final 10.

Clementine Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:01 PM EST

I think it's the songwriting thing too, but I am secretly wishing they are going to just take the bottom four men and not stick witht their lame 6 boys and 6 girls rule.

Stephanie Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:56 AM EST

The biggest thing will be that if Antonella gets voted into the top 12, she will be disqualified live in front of a studio audience.

Tim Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:40 AM EST

I agree that it's most likely the songwriting compeition (lame), but I'm hoping that it could be a wild card round, to bring back a few favorites from the audition rounds and semifinals(AJ, Bailey, Ebony, Tami, etc..). We'll see.

mscisluv Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:28 AM EST

Paul McCartney on AI and Heather Mills on Dancing with the Stars? Do they really not have anything else to do?

Lori Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

I love you, Cracker. You and Chris Sligh are my favorite funny men these days.

I wish it were the songwriting thing, but my bet's on McCartney.

Rebekah Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:18 AM EST

I agree with some of the other people who have posted. I think it will be the songwriting competition.

Cracker Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

I heard this from a reliable source, so I'm pretty confident it's true. They said that they will be picking 1 male and 1 female winner, and they'll have to race Rob and Amber around the world while being watched by Big Brother and the winning team will get a chance to marry a rich oil baron while the losing team will be forced to lose 50 lbs or be beheaded on live TV.

Either that or Simon will wear a light blue shirt, not sure which.

Rocky Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

Dangitall. Yeah, the "HUGE" surprise will probably be the songwriting competition. In true form, the promos for a SHOCKER! a SURPRISE! is neither.
What I was hoping for? How 'bout the top 12 - regardless of gender??? THAT would shake things up.

aymzer Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:12 AM EST

Weren't they trying to get Paul McCartney on the show? Could that be it?

I agree that it will be the songwriting competition.

Joe Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

*sigh*

I meant a guest star singer ISN'T something new.

Chanel Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:09 AM EST

Whatever it is, it better be interesting. This season stinks.

Joe Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:08 AM EST

Gotta be the songwriting. A guest star singer is something new.

mscisluv Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:00 AM EST

It's definitely going to be the announcement of the song writing competition. Seriously, someone at EW can't figure that out? I knew that's what it was as soon as Ryan mentioned the announcement on Tuesday. And I don't think anyone claimed it is a huge "surprise."

Peter Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 10:59 AM EST

Totally agree with Larry. It's the song competition. Its not going to live up the hype but hopefully it will turn out better songs than stinkers like "Do I make you Proud."

Larry Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 10:54 AM EST

Have they officially announced the competition to write the final song yet? If not, that's what it may be...
