Do we really want a (possibly Hanks-less) 'Forrest Gump' sequel?

Gump_l Worst idea... or worst idea ever? Cinema Blend is reporting that Forrest Gump producers Steve Tisch and Wendy Finerman are eager to bring back Winston Groom's hapless chocolate-loving adventurer for a second film. They even have a script; Paramount reportedly hired original screenwriter Eric Roth to adapt Groom's follow-up novel Gump & Co. in 2001 after the original grossed over $300 million at the box office in 1994, only to abandon the project after a dispute with Groom over royalties. Legal issues solved, Roth's script — which picks up after the death of Jenny and the failure of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. — is back in play.

But more importantly, is Tom Hanks? In the 13 years since the release of Gump, the two-time Oscar winner has cemented his position as Hollywood's biggest star and is probably not interested in slipping back the ol' buzzcut and blue-checkered shirt ensemble. But who knows? Maybe the forthcoming Charlie Wilson's War star has a soft spot for the role, and besides, if Old Man Ford is willing to re-don his brown crushed fedora... If Hanks is not interested, however, I hope Paramount has enough sense to quash the project altogether, as well as any prequel ideas, a la Forrest: The Early Years.

But that's just me. Would you be interested in seeing Forrest back on the big screen? If so, can anyone but Hanks pull off the role?

"Stupid is as stupid does"

Phantom Fri, Mar 9, 2007 at 10:38 AM EST

I didn't read the book, but I heard that Forrest was't nearly as personable and kind as he was portrayed in the movie. I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't like the book either.

Phantom Fri, Mar 9, 2007 at 10:27 AM EST

Hutchy, did you read the part where I said, "No offense, Hutchy"? Seriously, dude. I just don't get what's so great about "Pulp Fiction". I don't hate it, I just think it was trendy to pick it over "Gump". I was around mostly people from someplace other than the South when they came out - so I speak from experience. No red herring here, it's what I saw.

Rather than attack my roots, just tell me what was so great outside of the two things that I mentioned in the movie. And, for the record, I am probably 10 times as liberal as you are. I don't support the "real American values" that you are talking about.

Truth be told, I'd have to agree with GT. "Shawshank" smokes both of them.

Alex Fri, Mar 9, 2007 at 10:06 AM EST

Hutchy must've worked at a Blockbusters. Pulp Fiction better than Forrest Gump? Are you kiddin' me? Pulp was ripped off from other movies. Gump was one of the few films to transcend the novel it was based on.

Mary Fri, Mar 9, 2007 at 05:48 AM EST

I think that after 13 years. That to do another Forrest Gump. Would not be that good of an idea.

Martha Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 09:40 PM EST

Oh, and Phantom, way to troll on the Southern thing. What a red herring that is...says the girl from Virginia.

Martha Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 09:38 PM EST

I agree with everyone else - this is a terrible idea. The first Gump was a manipulative, self-indulgent Boomer fantasy but a sequel would be excruciating. That said, I love furry_tom's ideas...perhaps "Forrest Gump 2: Smells Like Teen Gump," where Forrest accidentally ends up in a Nirvana video and then tries to convince Kurt Cobain not to off himself...?

Byeung Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 09:15 PM EST

I think Forrest Gump 2 is a great idea. As a matter of fact, I think Tom Hanks should only do sequels. Imagine, Saving Private Ryan 2: Save Harder (who cares that he died at the end, nobody will remember). Or Castaway 2. Or Apollo 14. Or Philadelphia 2: The Return of T.O...

brandonk Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 08:30 PM EST

I think the Forrest Gump moment has passed. No more for me, thanks.
By the way, really didn't like the book, but the movie was good...how weird is that?

tiffany Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 08:00 PM EST

If you can't get Tom Hanks, get the next best thing...Tom Everett Scott.

Banana Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 07:45 PM EST

Maybe they could get Tom Hanks' not nearly as evidently talented son, Colin (Orange County) to play Forrest (with a little age makeup?).

Or maybe they should just do a spin-off with Lt. Dan. Gary Sinise is hot right now.

Yo Yo Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 07:12 PM EST

Wait, they made this sequel, it was called the last 6 years of the Bush presidency.

GT Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 05:05 PM EST

Hutchy, don't you mean the travesty was Forrest Gump beating The Shawshank Redemption?

Jakeem Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:51 PM EST

I fear they've waited too long to make a sequel. In "Gump & Co.," Forrest becomes a football player for the New Orleans Saints, but that's no longer funny in view of the team's real-life turnaround in 2006.
I've also noticed that Hanks doesn't do sequels (with the exception of the "Toy Story" movies), so I wouldn't bet on it.

Rahul Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:44 PM EST

This should not be done. Forrest's journey in the original flick was all towards gaining Jenny's love. I don't see how else they can develop the Forrest character. This seems like people wanting to cash in on a franchise like Hannibal Lecter, and we all know how badly that turned out.

Hutchy Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

I think Pulp Fiction is a better movie then Gump so I must hate the South? Uhhhh.....so that must mean your one of those people who will unconditionally support anything Southern or that purports to represent "real American values", regardless of actual quality? And as far as Pulp Fiction goes, dude I'm not even going to debate you. If you don't know why that movie is totally bad-a$$, you are beyond my help. But hey, you better run along now, the reruns of According to Jim and Extreme Home Makeover are coming on, I wouldn't want you to miss them!! That Jim Belushi, he's a riot!!

Tommy G. Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

I read the "Gump & Co." book a few years back - P.U.! Forrest is responsible for New Coke. Hardy Har. They should just scrap this idea now.

dma69 Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

Oh God, please not a Gump sequel! No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!!!Not every friggin' film needs to be a franchise! LEAVE GUMP ALONE!!!

Phantom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:55 PM EST

Haley Joel Osment? Kevin Nealon? Stop it. You're making milk come out of my nose...

irateferret Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

As long as Kevin Nealon takes the part, i'm there.

me Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:41 PM EST

To quote a wise woman "Hell to the NO!"...They cant do a prequel (not that hollywood wouldnt try) cuz we saw Forest grow up in the movie so how would they make a prequel?

Ceballos Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:25 PM EST

...on the other hand this COULD be the comeback vehicle Haley Joel Osment needs!

Chels Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:23 PM EST

NO, no, no, no, no! This is a crappy, horrible idea!!!

Phantom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:18 PM EST

Hutchy must be one of those guys that I was talking about in my first post that hate all things about the South - no, offense, Hutchy. I know it's trendy to say that "Pulp Fiction" was better. But outside of Jackson and Travolta, what was so great about that movie? Quentin's scenes were pretty funny, but that's about it. And the Gimp scene...was that even necessary?

Phantom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:13 PM EST

And let's be honest, the worst idea ever was the Jim Carrey-less sequel to "The Mask". Jamie Kennedy, huh? Where are those two guys from the grassy knoll when we REALLY need them?

Jones Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:12 PM EST

As a woman named Jenny, I have had to listen to people do the Gump voice for 13 years. I'm really not a fan of bringing that back the to forefront of American culture. Plus, the first movie told the story it needed to tell. There is no need to delve back into that world. Don't tarnish the legacy of the original with a pale imitation/sequel.

Phantom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:10 PM EST

"Forrest Gump" was an incredible story and an incredible piece of filmmaking. Anyone who says otherwise just has a grudge against all things Southern. That said, the idea of a sequel - Tom Hanks or not - is probably not the best idea, in my opinion.

Jen Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 03:06 PM EST

Definitely not a fan of that idea. Forrest Gump was a good movie, which I really enjoyed, but I feel like it sort of wrapped itself up well. I'd much rather have writers come up with newer ideas instead of making so many friggin' sequels.

Ceballos Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:20 PM EST

While this is truly a TERRIBLE idea, it's still not the worst I've heard. At least this movie would have a basis on a book. As a result, the proposed Russell Crowe-free sequel to "Gladiator" from a few years back is the worst.idea.ever.

brenny Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:17 PM EST

furry_tom i love you! thank you for making me lol with your hilarious bloggin on what is surely the worst movie idea in all time.

Hutchy Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:14 PM EST

Every generation gets an iconic Oscar travesty to call their own. For my parents, it was Scorcese's Raging Bull losing to Redford's Ordinary People, a movie no one even remembers or cares about at this point. For my generation, it was Forrest friggin Gump beating Pulp Fiction. In all seriousness, to this day I'm still stunned. Forrest Gump!?!?! beat PULP FICTION?!?!! Career best performances by Travolta, Sam Jackson, Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames, and Bruce Willis, combined with visionary directing and a script that people are still trying to imitate to this day......losing to a treacly, sappy, middle of the road right wing fantasy picture. Oh well, history tells the tale, right? I think the judgement has already passed on which picture has aged better.

Courtney Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:07 PM EST

Tom Hanks has a way of re-inventing himself over and over again for his films. I have no doubt that he could reincarnate himself as Forest Gump once more. The script would have to be excellent and the cast would have to be made up of many of the same members as the first to be a success. Forest Gump simply could not be embodied by anyone other than Tom Hanks.

furry_tom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

RE: If furry_tom writes the dad-gummed thang, ah'll watch iyut!
I would've lobbied for the job, but I see that I already screwed up. Forrest Gump ended in the year 1982 and Richard Pryor set himself on fire in 1980. It's that kind of inattention to detail that would've ruined the flick. That, and my decision to write in Chuck Norris as Forrest's estranged brother.

Lauren Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:43 PM EST

The first movie was a horrible bit of treacle to begin with, why make another?

Carlos Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:36 PM EST

OK, sure! While we're at it, let's go ahead and add another sequel to the Godfather series, remake Psycho for the second time, and do away with any integrity that American cinema has left.
I say that filmmakers should not be allowed to produce ANY sequels for the next couple of decades so we can actually witness whether or not there are any original ideas left in Hollywood. For God's sakes STOP IT!!

slj Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

Nope. Although if it were made, then we'd have another movie to add to the list of what movies make men cry.

Ed Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

I'm sure Tom Hanks wants to do this movie but from the looks of it, he can't compete with his former appearance.

Karla Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

Okay, I've changed my mind.

If furry_tom writes the dad-gummed thang, ah'll watch iyut!

sarah Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:26 PM EST

This is getting ridiculous...first Toy Story 3 possibly without Hanks, now Forrest Gump possibly without Hanks? They are RUINING all movies. The only sequel they should make to a Hanks-movie without Hanks is The DaVinci Code 2.

Tony B. in So Cal Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:17 PM EST

A Gump sequel is a horrible idea. I hope Tom Hanks has the sense to reject the idea of this film and then hopefully the studio would can it. As the cover of the DVD says "Tom Hanks IS Forrest Gump," so they can't make a sequel without him and they shouldn't make one at all.

Winona Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:07 PM EST

A Gump sequel? Please God, no. Why can't Hollywood just leave well enough alone?!

Charles Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 01:02 PM EST

I believe that the original was very close to the perfect movie. Funny, sad, depressing, uplifting and just about every emotion in-between. My family loves to watch it several times a year. Please don't ruin those memories with a wretched sequel.

That said, no Hanks? That would make about as much sense as remaking "Jaws" without a shark. Or casting Nemo instead...

GeeMoney Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:44 PM EST

No sequel. Bad idea! Besides, NO ONE would see it if Tom Hanks weren't in it anyway.

Nance Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:39 PM EST

The ending was perfect as it was. Do NOT ruin the movie with a sequel!

furry_tom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:37 PM EST

My favorite part of "Forrest Gump 2: Gumption Junction" is when he meets Mikhail Gorbachev after the President of the Soviet Union has won the Nobel Peace Prize and he says "That's a funny stain on your hea-ed."

Servo Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:34 PM EST

Now THAT would be retarded.

Joe C Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 12:17 PM EST

Regardless of Tom Hanks, the Forrest Gump sequel should NOT happen. THat was one of my fave movies from the 90's; leave it alone!

Bobby in Texas Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:57 AM EST

You can't mess with the first one. A second just wouldn't work. Not only no but HELL NO!

furry_tom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:47 AM EST

My favorite part of "Forrest Gump 2: The Forrest for the Trees" is when he wanders onstage during Live Aid and ends up singing backup on Bohemian Rhapsody with Queen.

Emma Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:42 AM EST

I know I'm in the minority, but Forrest Gump is one of my least favourite movies of all time. Needless to say, I won't be spending money to see a sequel.

Vicky Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:32 AM EST

No. Just no.

Karla Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

Oy - In my little home of Monterey, there's this horrendous theme restaurant called Bubba Gump's, where you get all sorts of fried food while endless TVs play the movie over and over, and the wait staff comes to your table and yells Gump trivia questions at the top of their lungs because the restaurant is so noisy.

In southern accents.

There's also a guy dressed like Gump, with the haircut and the suitcse and the choc, who wanders around the restaurant and gets photos taken with tourists.

It's jaw-droppingly strange - like a convention of SCA-ers or Trekkers who are completely not cool.

And I wondered how in the world they could stay relevant (if that's the word). Ah but now I know! If they're not behind this sequel, they should be.

And they got the actor for the part if that dag-blamed Hanks dawon' waon' iyut.

mike Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:29 AM EST

No. No.No. You guys put one of these posts out about once a month. Sequel to Gone With the Wind, Godfather 4, Step By Step: The Next Generation. Let a movie like this just stand on its own without watering it down.
If there must be a Forerst Gump 2: Still Runnin, at least let Pulp Fiction 2 take the Oscar this time.

Chris Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:26 AM EST

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. didn't go out of business, silly people. You can still go eat there.

I'm really not that stupid...

Liza Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:25 AM EST

Nooooooo, that is my all-time favorite movie. The last thing we need is a crappy sequel, so that the studios can make money.

Lily Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:23 AM EST

No No No, terrible idea. The follow-up novel Gump & Co. was horrible. In the book, Forrest and Jenny never got together, he found out about Jenny's death in a letter written by her mother, and little Forrest never lived with him, he was raised by his grand-mother. I wonder how they would switch all that up, since in the movie Jenny married Forrest, and he raised Little Forrest alone after her death.

Dave Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:22 AM EST

Worst Idea Ever is right. Forrest Gump is such a classic and one of my all-time favorite movies. Does that mean I want to see more Forrest? No! His story was told but another movie with him and new characters just wouldn't feel right. No matter how much they tried, lightning rarely strikes twice. Hollywood needs to stop messing with the classics.

furry_tom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:21 AM EST

My favorite part of "Forrest Gump 2: The Chocolate War" is when he meets Richard Pryor at a party and sees him light himself on fire while freebasing cocaine.

mark in nyc Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:16 AM EST

If Hanks is not around it is a horrible idea...unless they get Forrest Whitiker to play Forrest Gump. Now that is some casting!

Heather Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:15 AM EST

*headdesk*

furry_tom Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:13 AM EST

My favorite scene in "Forrest Gump 2: Even Gumper" is when he stumbles into a Bananarama video.

Joel Thu, Mar 8, 2007 at 11:11 AM EST

Bad idea.
