Snap Judgment: 'October Road'

October_l I've watched both episodes of October Road, and I honestly think the only two reasons for this are: 1) I like shows about writers with egos and 2) I. LOVE. FOLIAGE! The promos, the show's little orange-garlanded logo on ABC.com, the road itself... everything is in earth tones. On October Road, it is always autumn, which I find magical! Really. I'm obsessed with leaves and there are so many in the show. Plus, quaint college town! Awww, college! I'm a moron.

The show's pretty bad. None of the story lines make much sense — last night's ep had "famous novelist" and grown man Nick (Bryan Greenberg, pictured) tossing pebbles at a college dean's bedroom window, then serenading her with "Where Is Love?" from Oliver. There was some nonsense about a talking raccoon named Ralph, which made me want to... you know. And the lines... oh, the lines. At one point, we were treated to a list of items that are cold! Igloo. Polar bear. This show, despite the beautiful, beautiful leaves.

I should give it some credit, though, for the song selection. Last night offered montages of both Jackson Browne's "The Pretender" and Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." If you turn off the video portion of this experience, it's actually a pretty good show! Plus last night provided my catchphrase for the weekend: "Right. And I eat corn dogs for the corn." Because I do. I even have corn-on- the-cob earrings.

Who's seen it? Who's planning on watching again? And might it be better if, instead of speaking, the characters just strolled along the streets pointing out things that were orange?

October Road is a great show. I am addicted to the characters and the story line. Its refreshing to see something other than reality tv and crime dramas. Lets hope ABC keeps this one going.

jen Tue, Dec 4, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

Oh my gosh! I LOVE October Road...
So glad it came back!
Delightful!

Debbie Sat, May 19, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

I think October road is a great show. I love the characters and the story lines. I can't wait for more episodes!

Amanda Wed, May 9, 2007 at 06:57 PM EST

I am hoping ABC sticks with this show. It is fresh compared to all the same old story lines on TV. I actually enjoyed in more than Grey's anatomy because I could relate to it far more than being a beautiful surgical resident having romances with a Mcdreamy.

cabingurl Thu, May 3, 2007 at 07:58 AM EST

I am so totally obsessed with this show. It is one of my new favorites.

wondering Sun, Apr 29, 2007 at 04:58 PM EST

schticky Sat, Apr 28, 2007 at 08:17 PM EST

what is the name of the song they lip synced to on the apr 26 episode and who sings it

Kathy Fri, Apr 27, 2007 at 08:59 PM EST

I really love the show. I hope they show the second season soon. Can't wait for it to air again. I so love Nick and Hannah. I really hope Nick is Sam's father. I know he is.

Kristen Fri, Apr 27, 2007 at 07:05 AM EST

Does anyone know the songs from this latest episode??

Latosha Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 11:04 PM EST

This show is soo good. The last two episodes have made me cry :(. I can't believe there were only like 4 epidsodes....I really hope they bring it back soon. It was my new favorite show..and it was gone soo fast. I'm really upset..haha...great great show.

amy Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 11:03 PM EST

Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 10:39 PM EST

BRING IT BACK PLEASE!!

Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 10:36 PM EST

I cannot believe that someone would have anything bad to say about a show that just started, Why would you badmouth it when so many other people like it? what's it to you if they show it or not again.. im sure you dont watch every show that comes on tv! so don't give it bad reviews to spoil it from coming on again for another season!!!!!

sherry Thu, Apr 26, 2007 at 10:08 PM EST

This is an awsome show. I can not wait for thusday nights to get here.I hope that it comes back.

Mary Wed, Apr 25, 2007 at 01:37 PM EST

My entry may be a bit too late to generate any response, but I am very interested in finding out exactly WHAT happend to the little boy at the end of the "peanut" eppisode. I am not a big network watcher (am instead kind of a cable news/political info junkie) BUT when channel surfing one evening, trying I'm sure to escape the violence and morbidity of real time news, I happened upon this program with a pastoral and beautiful setting, textured and intesting characters and a story line, that at least for me, seemed at least believeable. Then, becasue I am myself, a life long peanut allergy person, was intrigued by the artful and focused way that the indident was presented at the very end of the program. Since I had to be out of town the next week, I did NOT see what happened after the little boy's accident. Can anyone fill me in?
And yes, I agree, this program seemed to be a calming, wothhwhile hour long program that many people could relate to with anticipation.

sam Sat, Apr 21, 2007 at 11:19 PM EST

i love October Road!!! Are they bringing it back next season? I certainly hope so. I think people just have to give it a chance. It has a great vibe and has become addictive.

Rhea Sat, Apr 21, 2007 at 07:22 PM EST

RHea Sat, Apr 21, 2007 at 07:16 PM EST

Eddie L. is smokin hot!!

Tucker Fri, Apr 20, 2007 at 02:46 PM EST

Love the show. I hope it sticks around for a long time. Besides the leads, I'm enjoying how the other characters are unfolding.

Sophie Thu, Apr 12, 2007 at 05:00 PM EST

I think if you only saw the first episode, you aren't giving the show a real chance. I've watched every episode and the show is addicitive. There is something sweet about the show, yet it's very entertaining as well. I cannot wait for the next episodes. I like this better than GA.

Katie Mon, Apr 9, 2007 at 07:44 PM EST

What is the name of the main song they play when they're showing previews for the show?

Melinda Sat, Apr 7, 2007 at 04:00 PM EST

I hope this show continues on. It so far has a good story line and will continue to get better as is goes. Its something different, and I always look forward to 10pm on Thursdays!

Christine Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 07:49 PM EST

I absolutely love this show!!! It is great, different and there is really no violence. I don't have to worry if someone is going to be raped or murder. The kid is adorable and everyone on the show is great. I even like the Commander. If you don't like it you must be off your rocker!!!

nohemy Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 06:45 PM EST

I think that the show even if its still in its first few episodes is GREAT! the actors a phenomenal! Keep up the great work ABC.

mgarlin Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 09:54 AM EST

I love this show. I thought the ending scene was amazing with that hauntingly beautiful Culture Club song in the background! It blew me away.

nicinnc Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 08:37 AM EST

the song is Culture Club - That's the way (I'm Only Trying to Help You)

SCOTT Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 01:14 AM EST

Hey if anybody knows the name of the last song and artist, could you please let me know. I think it was Boy George, but I'm not sure.

Thanks

ROZ Thu, Apr 5, 2007 at 10:57 PM EST

WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE LAST SONG SUNG ON TONIGHT'S SHOW? WHO IS THE ARTIST? I THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD WAY TO END THE SHOW.

A Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 08:13 PM EST

I like this show. It might be corny and melodramatic at times, but it's good. All you people are critisizing it way too much. It's only on it's 3rd episode, the storylines are just getting underway. Give it a chance, what else are you going to watch at 10:00pm on a Thursday? And besides, if you have TiVo, tape it, and fast forward through all the "annoying" parts. You need to chill out and enjoy a beautiful show with good music, an okay storyline, and good looking main characters who have good chemistry, unlike other shows who pick the worst people to be the "love couple". Besides, don't you want to see if Sam is Nick's son?

Suneeedayze Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 08:08 PM EST

I don't know what you are all talking about.......I like the show!

Dr. "A" Fri, Mar 30, 2007 at 08:39 AM EST

Enough is enough! Bring back "The Kinghts of Prosperity" (a fresh, funny show with interesting characters). Have the Knights rob Ray Romano, as had been planned before the show was cancelled and then have them rob the characters in "October Road", lock, stock and barrel so that October Road can be put out of its and our misery. And oh yeah, one more thing, of course October Road is a loser, it's set in freakin Massachusetts, where everyone is pissed about their lives.

Tom Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 10:08 AM EST

No, there's no talking raccoon. It was just a stupid story that a (stupid) male character made up to impress (??!!) a (stupid) female character. I can't even remember who the hell the characters were--just goes to show how memorable the show is!

Alicia Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 09:14 AM EST

The music and pop culture references on this show are all horribly, horribly dated and inappropriate considering how old the characters are.

K Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 08:00 AM EST

I thought the first episode was okay, but during the second one I was just waiting for it to end. I'm done with it. Men in Trees, please.

Maggie Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:47 AM EST

As a Massachusetts resident I had to change the channel after finding out that the town's name was "Knight's Ridge." Give me a break..what kind of name is that for a town?! Maybe in Connecticut...

Mon, Mar 26, 2007 at 07:46 AM EST

Maeve - stop it, it's bad enough already.

There was really a talking raccoon? Ah, so this must be one of those "quirky" shows. I loved "Twin Peaks" but I'll never forgive it for making every primetime drama believe that some surreal dream element will make it interesting.

stacy Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 10:17 PM EST

I can't wait till this show ends and Men in Trees comes back on

Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 07:39 PM EST

THIS SHOW IS AMAZING!

Marie Sun, Mar 25, 2007 at 08:32 AM EST

I don't love the show but I like it so I
guess I will watch a couple more episodes to make up my mind if I want to watch it or not.

CJM Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 01:32 PM EST

Seriously this show is not very good. Just watch Raines instead!

Maeve Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 05:17 AM EST

The correction pronunciation is "foilage."

Maeve Sat, Mar 24, 2007 at 05:17 AM EST

The correction pronunciation is "foilage."

lucy Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 07:08 PM EST

there is one thing on this show that is not orange but should be...Laura Prepon's hair. i mean, come on donna, everyone knows you looked better with the red hair of seasons 1-6 of that 70's show

ash Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 06:50 PM EST

It's rare you get to hear a Thin Lizzy song on TV that is not "Boys Are Back in Town." So I give the big thumbs up to last night's episode for the use of "Killer on the Loose."

Phil Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 06:34 PM EST

The show is ammusing. Yes, there are PLENTY of bad lines, but Bryan Greenberg and Laura Prepon are moderately fun to watch. I understand her reasons for lying to Nick, but the kid is definitely his, not some fictional Harvard student, who's bound to show up eventually if the show lasts.

Also, besides the beautiful foilage shown in the promos, ABC has decided to use Pink's "WHO KNEW" in the promos! "WHO KNEW" was released as the 2nd single last summer, but after a tepid response at radio & Mtv, the record label stopped working the song, but now that "U + UR HAND" seems to be flying up the pop charts after months of release, perhaps, Pink's record label will re-release this wonderful song just in time for this spring, & achieve success where they failed last year!

And ABC has me for at least a few more weeks when ER returns with all new episodes on April 12th.

Mozz Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 05:27 PM EST

I made it to minute NINE of the very first episode. I found it pedantic, obnoxious and self-centered and self-conscious. Is this what people in their 20's are nostalgic for? Then I beg to skip my twenties and go directly to thirty.

JenJen Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 05:22 PM EST

I really like the leads in this show. The material isn't that great all the time, but there is something about Bryan Greenberg and Laura Prepon. They come across very likable.

Kate Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:49 PM EST

Men in Trees is far better.

Stacey Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:36 PM EST

I watch it. I enjoy. It's sappy sure. And not Emmy worthy. But nice soapy material about a hometown. Different than the law shows, medical drama's. So I'll take it. It has its flaws, but it's entertaining. So yeah, I enjoy it!

Veronica Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:31 PM EST

I read that the people that did Beautiful Girls did this as well. So I tend to picture that movies characters as these & well, the music is good.

J.R. Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:31 PM EST

"Just because you are an idiot doesn't mean you should act like one!"
There seems to be too many musical interludes in the show (good ones at that I agree) but with witty gems like this one maybe a few more are in order.

jp Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

I've watched both too. Sooo bad. Train wreck, can't look away bad. How do scripts this bad actually make it on the air?

Zac Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:21 PM EST

20 of us get together every thursday for betty/greys and we started watching october road last week and probably only 2-3 of us don't like it. call us sentimental saps, but we all are 25. so 18 out of 20 of us approve of the show. keep the episodes coming ABC.

sam Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:08 PM EST

I watched the first show and really wanted to like it. It was perhaps the longest hour that I have ever spent watching TV. There is not a single original thought in this show. Oh, what a shock that the little boy has a peanut allergy just like the main character! Please, daytime soaps do this much better every day. Life is too short to watch this show.

sa Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:02 PM EST

what? no mentions of the sun drenched rooms in the first episode? Yes, I'll keep watching

lw Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 04:01 PM EST

the show is cheesy. but still i will watch. i've recently returned to my hometown after 11+ years away. yeah, there's no place like home. and bryan greenberg is a cutie (loved him in "prime") as is laura prepon.

the worst show on tv is "what about brian". it's terrible, not good enough for background noise.

Amber Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 03:52 PM EST

I watch Ugly Betty and Grey's and October Road is just too much TV for me in one night, it bores me.

lb Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 03:43 PM EST

I haven't seen the show, but thanks for making me laugh!

Matty Fri, Mar 23, 2007 at 03:36 PM EST

This might just be the worst show on television. "I still have so many new adventures here!" How about, "I still have so many different shows I'd rather be watching at 10 p.m."
