The Evolution of Homer Simpson

Mar 27, 2007, 12:21 PM | by Gary Susman

Categories: 'The Simpsons', Science, Television

You'd think Homer Simpson would be a walking (well, slouching) refutation of Darwin, but actually, he's a prime example of the miracle of evolution. At least, he is according to the opening-credit sequence of this past Sunday's episode of The Simpsons, which featured what may be the longest couch gag in the series' 18-year history. (Like, four billion years long.) Thanks to New Jersey Star-Ledger TV critic Alan Sepinwall for pointing out the YouTube link.

my bad ignore that last comment

Ashley Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:57 PM EST

I like the video, but you shouldn't have said it an example or Darwin evolution, because that isn't how the idea of evolution works. It based on natural selection, how certain traits stand out more thoughtful the years in different generations, thus having a new species after a long time. So, no this video is not showing Darwin evolution. Therese no way animals could immediate evolve into new species in the same generation like Homer did.

I'd also like to know that piece played in the background!!

neoxide Tue, May 29, 2007 at 06:29 AM EST

They should really be playing Fatboy Slim's 'Right Here Right Now' in the background...

Jon Sat, May 19, 2007 at 05:40 AM EST

Anybody know the name of the classical piece in the background?

muddy_pilot Wed, Apr 11, 2007 at 09:29 AM EST

I have never watched an episode of the Simpsons before but that was way too funny! I need to come out of my cave and see what I've been missing for 8 years.

james woods Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Great job...Now bring back Fry and Bender!

LARRY Fri, Apr 6, 2007 at 01:45 PM EST

Sam Wed, Apr 4, 2007 at 12:28 PM EST

That was so funny. Definately the best opening I've ever seen!

Eden-Avalon Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 03:49 PM EST

BEST...OPENING...EVER

(and i've been watching the simpsons all of my natural life)

john Tue, Apr 3, 2007 at 01:20 PM EST

That was the best ever opening. I love the Simpsons.

Buddy Mon, Apr 2, 2007 at 04:12 PM EST

Yes that is the greatest Simpsons opening ever! I love it, The Simpsons rules may they stay on the air forever!! Long live Homer!!

shannon Sat, Mar 31, 2007 at 02:39 PM EST

RE: Ricky Gervais
Yeah, that one was decent. But when Ricky's character picked up the guitar in that episode, he was inviting a comparison to the customer training episode of The Office, and I thought Free Love Freeway was way funnier/awkward then the song he did for Marge. Although I think my expectations for the episode might have been inflated too. I'd probably have to catch it again to render an impartial verdict.

OK, as I've grown from 20-38, the Simpsons have kept me company with some of the funniest skits and quotes I'm sure I'll ever hear.
Thanks Matt G. and company for entertaining me for almost half my life

Miss Misery Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

Oh my god--best one EVER!!!

Sarah Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 04:11 PM EST

To furry_tom... the episode written by Ricky Gervais last season was one of the best episodes ever. I would put it in my top 10.

Angela Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 02:19 PM EST

That rocked my world.

Ted Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 09:11 AM EST

I love how Moe devolved after he talked to Homer

Craig Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 08:50 AM EST

The Simpsons will never ever die...they will always be in 5th grade..maggie will always be a baby...homer will always be working at the power plant..and marge, well she'll always be the house wife/police officer

Tony Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 07:57 AM EST

That was one of the best couch gags ever. No one has mentioned yet that much of it is a dead-on spoof of the Rite of Spring sequence from Fantasia, which I got almost immediately. As a Disney fan, I enjoyed it. The attention to detail is astonishing, especially the way they adapted the various characters into prehistoric animals. The gag involving Moe was classic.

furry_tom Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 06:46 AM EST

I'm a Simpsons fan, but I think the show has lost some of the quality. Can you name an episode from the past few seasons that even approaches Marge Vs the Monorail, Mr. Plow or Flaming Moe's?
I'm glad to see that Futurama is coming back.

Kim Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 06:29 AM EST

That was fantastic, I LOVE the Simpson's. It is over the head of the kids, who think it is still funny, but something the adults get. Keep em coming!

Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 06:10 AM EST

The Simpsons is a classic that will never die! I would rather watch The Simpsons any day than the reality garbage that networks are constantly shoving down our throats.

Chris Wed, Mar 28, 2007 at 01:17 AM EST

I think the Simpsons is one of the funniest shows on T.V. I especially enjoy the halloween specials; theyre so funny the way they spin off on classics like the Twilight Zone. The best spin off on real show on the Simpsons is the Itchy & Scratchy show; which everyone know is a more violent version of Tom & Jerry mixed with the good humor of Spy Vs. Spy from Mad T.V.

Ep Sato Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 10:52 PM EST

I hope the Simpsons is on for at least another 10 years. Then, it'll mean syndicated Simpsons from here to eternity and like a 30 volume dvd set! The show has spotty moments, but the good episodes always give side splitting laughs.
Plus, the show spawned Futurama and made a gazillionaire out of the guy who wrote "school is hell".

ANON Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 08:31 PM EST

RE: "It's a Dilbert ripoff"

To Simpsons fans: Well, duh. I haven't paid any attention to the Simpsons in years and even I spotted it. How can Simpsons fans not recognize a parody/homage on the show when they see it?

To non-Simpsons fans: Simpsons PWN all other animated series. Get over it. When your fave has been on the air longer than all of the others combined, your arguments might hold water. And for the record, Family Guy was canceled twice before stumbling into its current fifteen minutes.

Monica Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 08:31 PM EST

EXCELLENT!!!

Devynn Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 07:46 PM EST

one word: bartasaur! haha! that was pretty funny and very unique. even if it did remind me a bit of the Dilbert opening. i miss Dilbert!

Don Juan Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 07:30 PM EST

I love reality tv and i didnt like this intro because it took to long

Ian Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 07:22 PM EST

Best couch gag ever! Anyone who thinks the show has gone downhill is either an idiot, or hasn't actually been watching.

Pizza Eater Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 07:03 PM EST

well the pizza find another show then being all down and crap... I LOVE THE SIMPSONS AND THE COUCH GAG IS HILARIOUS

pizza Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 06:42 PM EST

I really wanted to say "RDRR" (get it?) but this was really boring. I have loved the Simpsons for years but they have really gone downhill.

mild Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 06:08 PM EST

Possibly one of the best couch gags ever...

chuck Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 05:32 PM EST

saying the show is 8 seasons past its prime is just a stupid statement its as good as day one

Royale with Cheese Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 04:35 PM EST

Yeah, sorry, I just watched it again. Pretty freaking funny...

Royale with Cheese Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 04:30 PM EST

I think I would rather watch Chief Wiggum and Apu make out for two hours than I would American Idol for one second.

Patty and Selma, maybe not so much...

sarah Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 04:26 PM EST

These days, Family Guy makes me laugh out loud more...but The Simpsons is such an enjoyable show that fox should leave it on as long as possible. It's not really "can't miss" TV but it's definitely in the upper realm of shows I like to watch.

Royale with Cheese Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 04:25 PM EST

RE: Saying any show is 10x better than reality TV is like saying someone is 10x smarter than Homer.

Now THAT made me smile. I'm so glad someone hates reality TV as much as I do. Very, very witty, that comment.

homer j fong Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:49 PM EST

i am one of those die-hards who never stopped watching simply because i could never bring myself to walk away from such a genius show. i've been telling everyone who will listen that this season has been one of the best in years. while that's not saying much, it's restored my faith in the universe. couch gag this week was terrific. homer's groan after marge asked him why he was so late was the icing on the cake...

GT Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 03:17 PM EST

That was pretty cool, my favorite part was Moe Devolving.

Henry Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 02:26 PM EST

Once again, another brilliant couch gag from the folks over at The Simpsons. I love the inspirational music as Homer transforms from caveman to the current Homer that we all know and love. I really should start watching the show in preparation for the movie this summer. The gag also got me wondering if the movie will follow the format of the TV episodes, with the entire intro from the push-in towards Bart and the school and ending with a huge couch gag. I mean, that's gotta be the couch gag to top all couch gags. A couple of years ago, they had another brilliant one where it spans the entire universe and ends up being like, a bead of sweat or something on Homer's brow. That was pretty cool.

Vickie Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 02:25 PM EST

Wow!!!!!!!!!That was amazing!!!!!!!!I don't really watch The Simpsons that much, but that was just so cool!!!!!!!!!

Anna Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 02:02 PM EST

Hilarious!

Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 02:01 PM EST

Saying any show is 10x better than reality TV is like saying someone is 10x smarter than Homer.

Josh Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 01:55 PM EST

hysterical, and i love skinner's mom dropping in and the other characters' cameos to make it truly simpsons-esque. but to be a downer, doesn't it remind you of the intro to the Dilbert tv show?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ieEzPfkjEAA

the simpsons intro is much longer and of course tons of fun, but a tad borrowed, no?

Royale with Cheese Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 12:50 PM EST

Best...show...ever!

Sorry, I don't care if it is a shell of what it used to be. On it's worst day, it is STILL 10 times better than any freaking reality television.

I hope it runs for another 18 years. Peace...and eat my shorts.

Heather Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 12:22 PM EST

Ugh... The Simpsons has been dead for the past like 8 seasons now. When are they going to bury it already? It's such a sad shadow of the great show it used to be.

Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 12:15 PM EST

I'm a little tired of the overlong couch gags they've been doing lately. But I guess since they're so obviously short on plot and jokes, they need to fill up the time.

David Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 11:53 AM EST

I AM BOYCOTTING EW UNTIL 'AMERICAN IDOL' IS OVER!

Ep Sato Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 11:37 AM EST

This is my new favorite "evolution" video. Previously, my fave was that Pearl Jam animated video all about the evolution of life (I always watched it with the volume off).

mike Tue, Mar 27, 2007 at 11:31 AM EST

I saw this on Sunday and laughed my butt off. Great Stuff!!!
